...Atlantic City." Please. They've done it for three straight seasons. There's got to be some other way to create a season-long arc that doesn't depend on an outsider or someone he was once close to trying to knock him off his throne, or the Feds getting ready to arrest him.

That said, I've got a feeling that this is the season things don't go so hot for Chalky. He's done pretty damn well for himself for the first three seasons. I'm think Narcisse is going to be his rival. And Purnsley may even turn on him.

did he have one before dude showed up? seems odd that this is his main guy and he doesnt' have someone around that he trusts and didn't need to threaten in order to keep in line. i like the character and all but it's funny how he's the only one ever around with Chalk considering the way they met.

The dumb girl Nucky threw out mentioned Owney Madden... the same guy Purnsley's white girl is connected too.

She showed her cards way too fast. At least pretend to like the guy for a little while. Meeting more women like this will probably push him into trying to get Margaret back though

Any speculation on who the guys Richard is killing are?

I get that they keep her around because there's only two "strong" female roles on this show, but she seriously is useless as a character without Jimmy.

..the true dilemma of this series is nucky's tunnel vision. his uneasy conversations with eddie remind us of this at every turn. regardless of the auxiliary characters & issues, this will always be the greatest challenge of nucky's life.

van alden's evolution continues to provide depth and humor to such a stark period in history. while his presence is measured, his impact through physical expression knows no boundaries.

its nice to see richard harrow finally get his due. while his character quickly became a fan favorite among viewers, his development was shallow. that the writers deliberately allowed his past to unfold over time shows great confidence. such a stoic individual since his introduction, he finally shows his humanity at home on the farm. this man is much more than a hired gun.

"..a servent, pretending to be a king..."

words that burn, down to the core of a man. an incredible introduction to dr. valentine narcisse. still uncertain how much of a factor he'll play in this series, but rest assured jeffrey wright will make the most of every scene. the convo/scene with nucky, chalky, & dr. narcisse was worth the weight of this entire series. its quite obvious that wright's delivery is the balance.

This could be nitpicking on my part, but in my experience, the Trini accent is a bit more sing-songy, while the Dr. Narcisse character's is more gravely. All in all, not a bad job considering Jeffrey Wright is an American.

I was born in Jamaica, so this could be bias on my part, but the accent defiinately sounded Jamaican to me. What says you? It's an impressive Jamaican accent given that Jeffery Wright is an American. One of the better Jamaican accents from a non-W.I. native that I've heard in Hollywood.

But it's a solid attempt at a bougie Trini accent. The biggest thing wrong is how he pronounces his 'i's. We don't say 'keeng' or 'theeng' or 'thees'. We say them words regular.

If there *is* an extra 'ee' to American ears, he's putting too much on it.

He's also going too hard with the 'r's. Trinis got more of that Boston thing. Like 'heah' instead of 'heRe'. Cah. Pahk.

'Valentin' ain't really Trini either. Shoulda been an Errol or a Whitstanley or something.

Ain't nobody on TV ever Trini, though, so I'll take it.

I'm just not sure I'm interested in seeing the adventures of peaceful Richard, or some kind of Superman II shit where he gives up his 'powers' until he gets pushed to the edge

We'll see, i guess...

I'm guessing that's as far as Means knows from looking up Knox's background as a prohibition agent. It's also possible that J. Edgar made sure any of his involvement with his agents was kept secret, and that Means didn't have access to it. This is the beginning of the FBI, and it's completely possible that Means just isn't in the loop for that type of stuff.

..while most people would gladly agree that eddie deserves more credit & respect, this push for recognition is ultimately a bad look for both.

eddie is the ideal right hand man for nucky's lifestyle. he's the closest person to him, and his timing is always impeccable. while it might appear to be a good move to have him more involved, this will almost always prove foolish and detrimental.

people know the goons & gangsters associated with nucky's enterprise. they THINK they know eddie. with him in the shadows, appearing to be nothing more than a highly touted man-servant, he's much more valuable.

purnsley too busy thinkin' with the wrong head, put him a tough spot. dunn had every right to react the way he did, but he shouldn't have been IN that situation to begin with. either way, you don't settle that business with more violence. eventually, he'd have to pay for the loss.

If anything, I think his decision NOT to go after the Doctor proved how smart he is. Knowing that he now has real responsibility with the club, people to answer to, plus being the race that he is, it wouldn't be smart to go killing someone who claims to be a "king" without first discussing the matter with your "boss" for lack of a better term.

..as lawless as things might appear, organized crime doesn't work that way (hence, the term "organized")

petty thieves might make reckless moves, but they didn't last long in this line of work. organized criminal enterprises prosper by being calculated, clever, and patient.

this is why gyp's reign was short-lived. he lacked patience (and tact).

there is a pecking order.

*remember dunn's introduction to chalky?

he initially made the mistake of assuming chalky was some "uppity negro" because he was in a holding cell with nucky (instead of the rest of the negros) and his wife brought him books to read. purnsley did everything he could to provoke chalky, but white remained calm. eventually, dunn made a move against chalky and paid for it severely.

why?

because he didn't know who he was.

ignorance can get you killed.

everyone answers to someone. right now, chalky doesn't know enough about narcisse to make a move (which is why nucky pulled the reigns). patience is your best friend in this life.

..too far down the road

it seems that everyone's longing for somethin' other than the bed they've made for themselves.

jillian's current pitch is to recreate her own image and distance herself from her sordid past & reputation. unfortunately, her past has other plans. she's reminded of who she truly is at every turn, and her addiction to heroin should out her soon enough.

richard has a hard time reconciling his life's work with his true spirit. he has a gentle soul, but his skill set has determined a much more violent path for his life. every attempt he's made to walk away from that life is met with more violence. once a soldier, always a soldier.

the good dr. narcisse is indeed a wolf among sheep. never one to waste an opportunity to divide, his approach to purnsley was quite shallow and a subtle reminder to dunn & chalky's original introduction. question is, who's the leader of the pack?

nucky's constantly looking to minimize issues but his ambitions to expand on his enterprise are in stark contradiction to that goal. he's always searching for new horizons, but failing to see trouble brewing at home.

he's observant. he learns the tells of everyone at the table, then uses that to take calculated risk. problem is, a calculated risk is still a risk. sit at the table long enough and all tells will be shown, including your own.

after the meeting reminded me of Mos Def's character wiping his hands after shaking Chappelle's white character in the racial draft sketch. It's a shame his character probably won't be around for the term because I'm certain Jeffrey Wright is probably going to be too busy for the show past this season. Interesting character.

this episode was great for providing that. i hope this means the Meyer/Luciano power moves are officially going into full swing.

btw - i don't get how they can turn AR into a chump in one scene...all this time he's been the most calculated, controlled, cunning one of them all but they just exposed him to be something else in one poker game. i wonder where that will go from here.

but I thought a duppy was a ghost, at least that's my understanding, or is that the meaning for Trini folks and not for other W.I. folk? Minor point, but that took me out of that scene with Narcisse a bit. Stellar episode. I've been in NYC apartments too long because I was getting a bit jealous with those large windows seen in some of the houses in this episode.

I really like what they are doing with some of the returning characters.. and most of the new ones (outside of Eli's son) are really bringing something to the table. So far I've enjoyed this season more than any other.

I musta said "Oh no, Gillian." like 3 times. In the school, looking crazy. And you were an inner city kid in the 80's you've seen someone's relation come to school looking a lil off. you might not have know what it was though. It's jarring to see what that looks like as an adult.

I love Mueller's wife. She is thorough as shit. Too bad her man can't figure out if he wants to be the wild man from the iron sales office or the pansy from the flower shop.

Steve Graham is the shit. I have no idea what he's about to do minute to minute. Hilarious and frightening the next.

The Thompson men, from gramps on down, ain't about shit. And that lack of conscience is sewn in young. smh.

..'til the heat is on

jillian is a zombie. and like most zombies, she has no clue that she's walking dead. she's used goods, and the writers continue to use her as a piata. we can only hope that the payoff will be grand. at this point, its a bit redundant.

willie thompson might be a bit of a fuck up, but nucky sees potential in that rage. he should be bmoc in no time.

van alden has unwittingly become the comic relief for a very dark series. with his momentary break in the midst of chaos, we're reminded of just how maniacal he truly is. the clock is ticking.

nucky made a crucial mistake in allowing his emotional tie to eddie get the best of him. soon the rookie in the field is a lamb in the lion's den, eagerly shedding wool. everyone wants a piece of the action, but only a few people are truly cut out for this line of work.

unless that letter was to the feds he basically gave nothing up...and now he's dead. i hate to see the character go but in terms of hurting Nuck he didn't do any damage by snitching, he hurt him more on a personal level now that he's gone though.

the bureau was looking for info to confirm the existence of organized crime.

eddie just gave them a crucial link.

it's one guy confirming what they already know...not evidence...not anything they can use to do any more than they have already been doing. that was intended to be his initial shake down and they would bleed him for info longterm and use him as their informant...now that he's dead they have nothing.

..the bureau is fairly knew at this point, but they've been watching & collecting intel on all the major players (detailed in the previous ep)

eddie confirmed nucky's chicago connection

this current interrogation is just one of many, in an effort to gain full support towards federal indictments. every crucial piece of info they gather moves them a step closer to indentifying and going after organized crime.

this was just an introductory meeting and they were looking to use him to get more info and even closer to Nuch but now he's useless...they will be pissed to find out he's dead. all the info he gave up did was confirm to them that they had him right where they wanted him...they broke him and would use him going forward but now they can't.

..more like a different focus

its obvious that eddies suicide gives them one less informant. on the surface, his involvement appears to be minor.

still, when you consider the true scale of things to come, you begin to recognize how crucial those little details truly were. *esp considering the fact that at one point, hoover wasn't convinced that criminal activities were well organized machines.

there's no such thing as "harmless info" when you're trying to keep a low profile on the true nature of your business.

how do you figure that conversation with Hoover will go? they don't have anything that they didn't already have...this is just hearsay. it's not a written statement or a sworn affidavit or a confession under oath...it's a co-sign from a dead guy. Hoover will tell them to go back out there and get something he can work with. Obviously they will eventually get something with meat on it but Eddie's "one thing" wasn't it. they were just priming him for what was to come and he knew it so he offed himself.

..you stated that eddie's info was harmless and basically amounts to nothing following his suicide.

that's not exactly true.

truth is, hoover wasn't sold on the investigation of a nationwide conspiracy, but gave them a bit more time to produce solid evidence of organized crime existing beyond state lines. eddie's suicide might've bought nucky a bit more time, but that brief interrogation yielded enough info to move from speculation to full on investigation. we all know knox will be even more determined to break this case.

like i said, the devil is in the details.

..which was simple:

hoover didn't believe the theory of a nationwide conspiracy regarding organized crime. agent knox needed concrete evidence and eddie gave him just enough to put him on the right path. if not for eddie's info, knox would've never know:

- about the meeting with RC (or the payout)
- about the account eddie opened (with nucky's instruction)

ultimately, this all falls on nucky's shoulders. if he never involves eddie in the business, its highly doubtful that he'd ever end up in the crosshairs of the bureau. instead, eddie sings. in the wake of his suicide, knox is basically handed the keys to the vault (thanks to eli's incompetence).

the bottom line:

eddie's interrogation was a crossroads. the little info retrieved proved to be vital.

the room and the darkness
connecting via language
offering a connection and friendship
then shaming

yep. that's how it's done.

Rather than face what was going to be a long-term reality of snitching on his best friend to avoid getting sent back to Germany in disgrace, he chose to end it. And probably warn Nucky in the process; I assume the letter was him explaining what happened.

Even with Eddie dead, and even if Knox ends up catching a bad one by season's end, this the BI isn't going to leave Nucky alone. Hoover obviously doesn't go away, and he's not going to get bought off/compromise/look the other way. They're likely setting up the long-term end-game here.

There is something to be said for people who play their position

Nucky gets these promising people but ambitious
Who are actually key to nucky for the trust factor
And they take themselves out because their ambition exceeds their skill set

I had to look up Frank Capone after it was over to see how accurate that was. I didn't know anything about him. guess they stayed pretty true with it

Cyren called it a few weeks back that this eddie thing was gonna be bad. I didn't expect this bad this fast though. He'll be missed. I'm glad we got some backstory on him at least.

Everything with Eli's kid = Wow. Nuck training him to look out for number one and if a few decent people are collateral damage along the way, so be it. fuck them, too. Can't even imagine the living hell that wimpy roomate kid is gonna go through, being locked up with a bunch of thugs... but i think part of the point is for neither us or Willie will ever see or hear from him again. Out of sight, out of mind. Probably wont even ever come back to haunt Willie the way Eddie's past just did.

Looks like Purnsley learned from his last white girl and didn't jump on that shit lol

Also, it's kinda cool seeing low level characters like Purnsley and (a couple weeks ago) Mickey from 'civilian' perspectives. they both came off far different.

I thought he used that lie soley for the purpose of going to NYC to visit Narcisse. But if he's using it as an excuse to stay away from Chalky period and deal in Jersey, that would make it even worse IMO. I think you're right because it looks like he's posted up fairly comfortable in whatever barbershop he's in.

Is it fair to assume he's still in Jersey since the Gillian character found him? I wouldn't think she'd be desperate enough to go to NYC to find a drug connect.

The woman you're referring to could have ran back to NYC, since she's based in that area. It would make sense for Chalky and Pernsley having a hard time finding her. I'm assuming Pernsley is dealing in Jersey since Gillian found him, which means it would be easier for Chalky to know what's going on. I doubt Gillian would need to get the connect from Narcisse since he's based in NYC.

I know people complained about Margaret last season, but I'd take her hospital storyline over Gillian right now.

Shit I'd rather check in on Eli's wife's mundane home life than see Margaret again.

I'd rather they give us a 5 minute per-episode still shot of Owen's gravesite than do any kind of dealings with Margaret again.

I'd rather they give us a breakdown of what Nucky's dead wife is doing up in Heaven than get another Margaret storyline.

I'd rather they show us Willie's college girlfriend clipping her toenails than show us what Margaret's up to.

God I hate Margaret.

This season has been easily the show's best JUST BECAUSE Margaret has been absent.
I'm being hyperbolic but only slightly.
Keep her annoying ass away from this show.

Gillian's storyline is interesting because you know it will eventually intertwine with Harrow's again and more Harrow is always good.

it ain't that serious. she bores the shit out of me and every scene she's had with livingston has been a snoozefest, so i'm just gonna skip them all and still enjoy whatever payoff it might be leading up to.

gillian and harrow, from a character perspective, should have had their arcs closed last season. don't care about drugged out gillian trying to get her grandson back, or whatever. of course they can still come back and have some good moments this season, but they just seem superfluous at this point.

purnsley/chalky has been a slow burn too (since they met back in, what, season 2?), but i don't mind it since the characters are still interesting to me. so it's got nothing to do with not having the patience to appreciate BE.

I get what you're saying, and mostly agree.

The only problem (and it's minor, IMO) this show has sometimes is that it spreads itself a little too thin. I still keep focus and interest in storylines that seem boring because I know they'll pay off (except Margaret, she never pays off), but I think I agree that Gillian and Harrow should've been done at the end of last year. Would've been a fitting ending for both, and this year the focus could've been more on the club and more on the multi-city network which is the heartbeat of the show.

...and I'm also firmly in the camp that believes Gillian's story should have ended at the hands of Harrow's rapid fire at the end of last season. But since it didn't I still prefer the screen time to go to Gretchen Mol than Margaret and her miserable, boring, brutal storyline. I imagine if Gillian died last season, Margaret would be getting her screentime so I'm cool with where the show is.

But yea - this show is in it's prime right now. I've loved it every season but I agree that it just keeps raising its game.

why the connection between sally and margaret? what was margaret supposed to be?

the sex scene wasn't much of a stretch for bdsm.

Patricia has facilitated, informed regardng his business and generally been an ear to Nucky
Margaret couldn't seem to manage any of it

how about buscemi in bdsm is awkward or just sex in general with buscemi

..stark contradiction

margaret was never asked to facilitate business. nucky provided shelter and security, and in turn her presence legitimized him in certain social circles. he asked her to make his house a home but unfortunately, she couldn't ignore the true nature of his business. the only time nucky involved margaret in any of his business dealings (placing the deed in her name) was a ruse to protect himself. he just never figured she would ever be spiteful enough to hurt him.

obviously, he was wrong.

i don't get the impression that shelly is anything more than a means to an end. they share chemistry, but come from clearly different worlds.

the contrast solely seems to be Margaret's moral stance

They both need and wanted to use Nucky.
Margaret is a bit more clearly from a different world or made that (questionable) moral dividing line clear

Shelly definitely not, she and Nucky both have shady dealings.

..is often hard to find

this series is known for its style and action, yet the dialogue is equally rewarding. once again, the dialogue takes the lead.

nucky's opening scene with margaret was stoic. the void between them has always existed, they simply found ways to ignore it. now that the void is all that's left of their relationship, he's forced to reconcile his thoughts. this convo sheds light on his hesitation. his instincts would serve him well if he ever chose to listen to them.

agent knox finds himself struggling to convince hoover to continue the investigation into an alleged conspiracy of organized crime. desperate to find hard evidence, he makes a bold but decisive play.

watching luciano squirm was a treat. his allegiance (read: FEAR) of masseria (and rothstein) is quite telling. he's been waiting for the chance to step out of the shadows, yet folded in the face of opportunity.

richard harrow returns to new jersey, still unsure of his place in their world. his connection to tommy keeps him grounded. his affection for julia gives him hope. julia's confidence is... charming.

eli is an absolute mess. with every episode, we discover just how different he & nucky truly are. as much he wants to prove himself as a man in charge, its clear he's not capable of handling things with discretion.

chalky's restless. everything he does is an effort to legitimize his position as a man of means & power. he doesn't like being shackled, and can't stand being compromised. right now, he appears to be playing into the hands of dr. narcisse. whether this is all apart of a larger scheme remains to be scene. in the meantime, he's enjoying his dance with daughter maitland.

I figured the zoom in was for a reason, but I couldn't put two and two together there. Here's seeing if Eli has any police skills left or not.

..i think knox made a mistake (out of habit), and that might be just enough for eli to get the goods on him.

not on a scrap level.

sure he's got farm hands, but Eli's got inches, pounds and gangster.

I'm reminded of those shots of Capone with Mueller, George quite easily towering over him even as Capone plays the strong hand.

Knox doesn't want to get at any of these guys hand to fist.

This episode (and kinda the whole season so far) kinda tried to play the "Eli's got a soft side" angle, but at the end when they show him noticing the initials on the handkerchief you just know he ain't gonna stand for that shit.

a couple episodes ago that he's gonna "find Nucky's weakest link and break it," which obviously can't be Eddie anymore...so considering the ease with which he obtained information through Eli, he probably sees him as at least *somewhat* weak (not knowing what we know) and therefore sees him as easier to break (especially after witnessing him cry), while still acknowledging and knowing that he is swimming in troubled waters no matter how weak the associated link.

..great title reference

eli & nucky continue to search for more info on agent knox, only to come up empty due to compromised informants. the game of misinformation is alive & well. meanwhile, willie can't handle the guilt associated with his own troubles and drops out of school, leaving a rift between the thompson men. unfortunately, they have larger trouble brewing as the bureau moves forward with their investigation into organized crime. fortunately for nucky, his ties with the attorney general should prove favorable, but that will surely come at a severe cost.

luciano remains in good standing with masseria, and will soon be importing a bit more than booze from the tampa.

gillian is on the road to recovery, thanks to a healthy helping of cold turkey from roy. should be interesting to witness gillian without heroine. while most people despise her character, she's certainly proven to be a worthy adversary when focused.

dunn & the good dr. narcisse run a number on the local parish, but the deacon is wise and soon meets his demise. chalky's best asset is his natural inclination to trust no one. the chess match between he & narcisse is quietly heating up. he's taken the bait of daughter maitland, but appears to be setting the stage for greater purpose. maitland delivers more insight regarding her history with narcisse and reveals a very dark twisted nightmare for all.

margaret & rothstein both get a nice surprise when they both meet under the guise of secret identities. the world is never as large as you need it to be when you're in hiding.

al capone always delivers. the charm is hilarious, but capone always means business. now that he has the green light on o'banion, this rising star is sure to entertain.

That bothered me a little bit since it was so obvious to everybody except Torrio. I was glad they didn't drag it out that much longer.

Yea I was thinking that the scene where she ran into fake Jimmy's buddy at the restaurant has to mean something. I don't think that was just stuck in there randomly but we'll see I guess.

gillian will always be one step away from complete implosion. roy appears to be a traveling salesman, selling hope to anyone gullible enough to listen.

>She also lied to both. She could be trying to "free" herself.

make no mistake about it: daughter maitland is an opportunist (like everyone else in this series). her only true allegiance is to herself.

>That bothered me a little bit since it was so obvious to
>everybody except Torrio. I was glad they didn't drag it out

torrio always knew the deal, he was just trying to stretch time. he knows he wouldn't/won't survive a war. he's old enough to recognize that his tenure is coming to a close, but still foolish enough to believe he can leave on better terms than his predecessor.

God I hope it's a one off. But I'm not confident. I was hoping last week was her one off but here she is again. I hate her fucking face so much. This show has enough storylines, already spread thin enough. Margaret was a welcome subtraction from the show. Stop wasting time on her stupid face.

It'll amp up screentime for Eli and Nucky together which I think is always good. Sepinwall made a good point in that this may be the writers' way of kind of rekindling the Jimmy/Nucky relationship and writing some themes into the "Lil Eli is the new Nucky" relationship that they missed out on when they had to take Jimmy down.

I was happy to see Ron Livingston joining this show but his character so far has been a snoozefest. i'm really hoping there's another angle here. there's gotta be more to this guy than just being a rich sucker.

And I'm still trying to figure out exactly how the run in with Fake Jimmy's friend plays into all this because I know that wasn't just randomly thrown in there for show.

Maybe Piggly Wiggly is really one of Fake Jimmy's friends who's doing some recon to try and get her to admit to what she did? Or even an undercover of some sort looking for the same thing?

I dunno....just spec.

If Gillian fleeces him, that would make the dude the first character on the show that isn't nuanced in terms of having any negative traits. I dunno about him being a sadistic madman, but there is the fact we nor Gillian know anything about his prior family life, so I'm hoping the negative or more nuanced aspects of the character will come from there.
