"American Horror Story: Coven"

The previous post has been lost, but this is what we know so far:

- This season will revolve around witches and will feature a Romeo and Juliet love story.

- This season's themes will be witchcraft vs. voodoo, witch hunts, and witches

- The American horror story of the first season was infidelity; season two was sanity; this season it will be oppression of race, family and feminism.

- Returning players are : Jessica Lange, Frances Conroy, Tassia Farmiga, Sarah Paulson, Lily Rabe, Denis O' Hare, Alexandra Breckenridge and Evan Peters

- New players are Kathy Bates, Gabourey Sidibe, Angela Bassett, Jaime Brewer, and Emma Roberts

- It will partially take place where true life American horror has taken place (Salem?)

- The season's tone will be lighter with more humor

- Kathy Bates' character is the most evil character she's ever played.

- Jessica Lange is a crazy cat lady who will face off with Bates' character and Conroy's character

- The first three episodes of season 3, recently revealed, are titled "Bitchcraft", "Boy Parts", and "The Replacements."

- More from Ryan Murphy here: http://www.vulture.com/2013/08/ryan-murphy-on-american-horror-story-coven.html

And of course the first creepy teaser: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWer7A7d-NE

We'll try and do episode by episode because this might be the most epic shit out this season.

We might even do a tv specific show this fall as there promises to be a ton more tv of the horror type than ever before so we'll have you covered.

because AHS is going to be GOING THERE...

Here are all the genre shows coming out this fall:

SLEEPY HOLLOW (FOX)
SUPERNATURAL (CW)
DRACULA (NBC)
GRIMM (NBC)
AMERICAN HORROR STORY (F/X)
THE WALKING DEAD (AMC)

I mean, AHS and TWD are pretty much neck and neck for getting coverage on the podcast period.

GRIMM would be third.

I'm checking out Sleepy Hollow because of Nicole Behaire and because this is a show from Orci and Kurtzman (Hawaii 5-0, Fringe, Alias, etc.) and they usually produce some solid hits.

Dracula because NBC is going HOARD with this and I think paired with Grimm, this may very well become part of the solution NBC needs *TO START WINNING*.

Seriously.

Supernatural: smh, they're running on weak fumes and even if they cast Tehmoh Penikett in a recurring role, I know I personally won't be pressed for this.

but AHS? where they are going and who's on the cast? HELLS YES!

In response to Reply # 0

http://collider.com/american-horror-story-coven-kathy-bates-angela-bassett-interview/

American Horror Story: Coven is the upcoming third season of the popular and critically acclaimed FX horror anthology series, starring Jessica Lange. Set in both modern day and the 1830s, this new season centers on a coven of witches that relocated from Salem, Massachusetts to New Orleans, Louisiana before the Salem Witch Trials. Kathy Bates will be portraying infamous serial killer Madame LaLaurie, while Angela Bassett is voodoo practitioner Marie Laveau.

During the FX portion of the TCA Press Tour, co-stars Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett talked about how much Jessica Lange influenced their decision to join the show, who the women are that they’re portraying, what made them want to do television, and what it’s like to work with such talented people. Check out what they had to say after the jump.

Question: How much was Jessica Lange’s run with this series and the variety she’s been able to have with it an influence for you to come on board now?

ANGELA BASSETT: It was a tremendous influence for me. I’m a big fan of her work. She’s incredible. Watching the first two seasons, the work of all the actors, in addition to Jessica, was just an actor’s dream.

KATHY BATES: Same here. And seeing Sarah Paulson’s work, especially last season, you just get like a little kid. You just want to play, too.

What can you say about your character, this season?

BASSETT: Well, I play Marie Laveau. It’s been interesting, being in New Orleans, because there’s such a regard and respect for who she was. She lived to about 80 years old, and she was a very influential person in the city. My character is based loosely on her.

BATES: My Southern accent has come roaring back. Now that that cat is out of the bag, one of the things I enjoyed reading about Madame LaLaurie is that my great-great-grandfather came from Dublin to New Orleans in the 1830s, and he became personal physician to Andrew Jackson. And I read in the book on LaLaurie that his plantation was next door to theirs. So, I was very curious to know whether my grandfather ever met her because I think he would have been there just before she left. I thought that was interesting.

Angela, did you do research into Marie Laveau? How close is this incarnation to the real woman?

BASSETT: I read a fictional novel by Tallant, called The Voodoo Queen. I’ve read two books about her, one that’s more historical and one that’s her life, but put into novel form. It’s just very interesting. We’ve been filming in the French Quarter. But, I don’t know exactly where it’s going, so I’m remaining open and just picking up little things. Her father was French Creole, and he gave her gold earrings. Spain occupied Louisiana longer than the French did. I’m also talking to folks from there and just getting a take on how they see her or what they feel about her, to get a sense of who she was and her power in the 1800s, as this black Creole woman.

Kathy, your last series experience, with Harry’s Law, had its ups and downs. What did it take to make you want to do a series again?

BATES: I don’t want to give them any airtime. I think they treated us like shit. They kicked us to the curb. I think they disrespected us, and our seven to 11 million viewers, every week. And I think they’re getting what they deserve. Thank you. On a positive note, I went out for a drink with my friend, Jessica, after seeing the first season. And I said, “You’ve got to get me on that show.” I thought it would be maybe a couple of episodes. So, I went in and sat down with Ryan , and when he pitched this show to me, this little kid that lives inside all of us just started jumping up and down and running around. I said, “I want to do it!” It just got me so excited that it washed most of the crap away. Clearly, there’s some residue. But, it’s delightful to be among such a glorious group of actors and have such magnificent material to play. I’m going on the record to say that we’re going to knock your socks off.

Angela, what got you to return to TV again? Was it just this show, in particular?

BASSETT: This was just perfect. I just got a call to come in and meet Ryan. I watched every single episode, but to hear him talk about it, and knowing who would be joining the cast, and that it would be shot in New Orleans, which is one of my favorite cities – for the music, the food, the character and their love of death – and people from different strata live within 10 to 15 minutes of each other, it’s just very unique. There is such a history of that town, with free people of color, slaves, whites and Haitians. That I would be able to be in a city that I love, working with artists that I love, that obviously write for women, and to be able also to come home and not neglect my family for six months straight, it had everything going for it, as far as I was concerned.

How is it to be able to work with such a group of people, at this level of talent?

BATES: It really raises your game. It’s something almost unconscious that, when you get out there, you know who you are going to be with, even if you are not in the same scene with somebody, and you just want to bring your triple-A game and work at the highest level that you can do. You want to push yourself. And we have a wonderful director who is going to be down there all season, Alfonso Gomez-Rejon. He’s a magnificent director, and he’s got such an amazing eye. That’s what I loved about some of what I saw last season. It’s just something that you don’t see on television. He likes high, wide shots. He really has that artist’s eye to create a painting. I can’t wait to see it.

American Horror Story: Coven premieres on FX in October.

I didn't love everything about last season (though I appreciate the campiness a great deal), but it was interesting and compelling enough to keep me entertained regarding a new season. Especially since everyone and their mother signs on to do these things.

Plus, last year's teasers were really great. I'd hope this year's are similar.

I can't wait. The fact that Murphy got Bassett, Bates, Lange, Lupone, Sidibe, in addition to everyone else who's coming back from Season 2?!

And they're shooting on location in New Orleans?

I'm more than willing hop on the camp train that is AHS and go along for the ride...

Finally we have some more to go on for the latest season of horror offerings from FX's hit genre show 'American Horror Story: Coven'. In the past the show has entwined numerous sub-genres in each of its previous seasons and we already know, at least, the upcoming third season will revolve around New Orleans witches. Now a new official synopsis for the season has arrived spilling some more welcome deets about the mysterious third entry. Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Sarah Paulson, Angela Bassett, Alexandra Breckenridge, Evan Peters ('Kick-Ass'), Frances Conroy, Taissa Farmiga (below), Denis O'Hare, Lily Rabe, Gabourey Sidibe, Jamie Brewer, Emma Roberts ('Scream 4') and Patti Lupone all star in the new season. Check out the full plot breakdown below.

"'Coven' tells the secret history of witches and witchcraft in America. Over 300 years have passed since the turbulent days of the Salem witch trials and those who managed to escape are now facing extinction. Mysterious attacks have been escalating against their kind and young girls are being sent away to a special school in New Orleans to learn how to protect themselves. Wrapped up in the turmoil is new arrival, Zoe (Farmiga), who is harboring a terrifying secret of her own. Alarmed by the recent aggression, Fiona (Lange), the long-absent Supreme, sweeps back into town, determined to protect the Coven and hell-bent on decimating anyone who gets in her way."

'American Horror Story: Coven' premieres on FX on 9 October.

FX's American Horror Story continues to add star power to Coven.

Showrunner Ryan Murphy took to his Twitter page Sunday to announce that Magic City alum Danny Huston has joined the ranks of the third season of the anthology series.

Coven stars Jessica Lange as a witch named Fiona; Kathy Bates plays historical personage Madame LaLurie, a Louisiana-born socialite and serial killer who kept slaves bound in her home; and Angela Bassett portrays voodoo expert/cult leader Marie Laveau. Coven tells the secret history of witches and witchcraft in America. More than 300 years have passed since the turbulent days of the Salem witch trials, and those who managed to escape are now facing extinction. Mysterious attacks have been escalating against their kind, and young girls are being sent away to a special school in New Orleans to learn how to protect themselves.

Wrapped up in the turmoil is new arrival, Zoe (Taissa Farmiga), who is harboring a terrifying secret of her own. Alarmed by the recent aggression, Fiona (Lange), the long-absent Supreme, sweeps back into town, determined to protect the Coven and hell-bent on decimating anyone who gets in her way.

AHS co-creator Murphy noted that Huston will play the boyfriend to Lange's Fiona and described him as both "sexy" and "dangerous."

For Huston, the AHS role comes a month after Starz canceled period drama Magic City after two low-rated seasons. Repped by ICM Partners, Huston's credits also include X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Children of Men and 21 Grams.

Huston joins a female-heavy cast that also includes Sarah Paulson, Denis O'Hare, Evan Peters, Lily Rabe, Patti LuPone, Emma Roberts and Gabourey Sidibe. Coven premieres Oct. 9 on FX.

http://collider.com/american-horror-story-coven-images-synopsis/#more-282278

The third season of the anthology series American Horror Story, subtitled Coven, is slated to premiere on FX next month, and now the first images and some revealing plot and character details have landed online. American Horror Story: Coven puts the focus on witches and witchcraft and takes place mainly in New Orleans. We’ve known for some time that Kathy Bates will be playing historical figure Madame Delphine LaLaurie, who was infamous for the brutal torture of her slaves, and we get a good look at her in these first look images along with a peek at Angela Bassett’s voodoo witch character.

Hit the jump to check out the images and for much more information on what the plot for AHS: Coven entails. The series premieres on FX October 9th at 10pm.

Jessica Lange returns for her third go-around with the AHS crew, and this time EW reports that in the contemporary-set portion of the show she plays a woman named Fiona, who is described as the Wicked Witch of the West. She is labeled “supreme” for her magical abilities and is witch royalty, descended from Salem casters. When a young Salem witch near New Orleans is murdered, Fiona is inspired to leave L.A. and return home. Sarah Paulson plays Fiona’s estranged daughter Cordelia, and she acts as headmistress of the witch school Miss Robichaux’s Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies.

The world of Coven is inhabited by not one but two witch clans, and they are both mortal adversaries: Fiona’s Salem witches and the voodoo witches. When the school is threatened by the voodoo clan, Fiona and Cordelia must figure out the best course of action, be it fighting or attempting peace. Emma Roberts, Gabourey Sidibe, Taissa Farmiga, and Jamie Brewer all play young students at the school, and Coven will involve a number of different time periods, including the 1970s when the Academy’s enrollment was booming and the 1830s, which is where Bates’ LaLaurie and Bassett’s Marie Laveau come into play.

Head over to EW for more on American Horror Story: Coven, and check out the images below.

they only list the MAIN cast in the opening sequence and the reoccurring cast is listed at the end.

I don't think it's odd at all.

Don't know why you'd think that'd be fake. NO ONE can fake something that good. I mean look at the production value.

With that said I thought this season was supposed to be "light".

I mean holy shit at the rape!!! And then the bus flip!

I why did Fiona dig that bitch up?!

I can't wait to see how this shit plays out. I'm really into the characters and it has been only one episode.

I needed those frat rapists to die, cause that was some super foul shit.

It seems like every season there's gonna be an OD rape. The first season's and the this season were hard to watch.

Last season I didn't care about the character that much so it wasn't as bad. With that said, no one deserves to go through that shit at all.

I'm really looking forward to what's going on here. They kept it historically real. It's graphic and disturbing just like we're used to, but the story seems a little smoother from the jump, and again, I love the 'theatre troop' vibe this show gives off. Lastly, WTF are they doing to Jessica Lange, man? They are REALLY good at making her look anywhere from late 30's to her actual age.

The make-up/lighting people on this show deserve BIG props. It ALWAYS comes across SO natural.

GOT DAMN...

so MUCH went on last night...

the cast is on fire (especially Emma Roberts, who really isn't that great of an actress, is PERFECTLY CAST as Madison)

The location, the storylines...

i'll have to watch again because I was CONSTANTLY yelling *WHAT THE FUCK?!* the entire time...

and the Fiona Supreme vs. LaLurie vs. Laveau: man this battle all season is going to be EPIC...

i'm putting my early money on Laveau. Given who she is in New Orleans lore and history, YOU DO NOT WANT TO FUCK WITH HER AT ALL.

I don't think Fiona is ready for this one...and LaLurie, given what she did to Laveau's man? SHEEIT...LaLurie better watch her back.

And the fact that Ryan Murphy said Fiona is hell bent on finding out who the new Supreme will be and she kills one of them? WOW...

I think Madison's a goner, ya'll.

And I bet Zoe is the new Supreme...or it's Cordelia and she's coming into her powers LATE (though I'm hearing Cordelia isn't ANYWHERE as WEAK as this first episode is portraying her to be).

But American Horror Story: Coven gets a damn TEN out of TEN stars from me.

I mean, *THIS* is how you do a genre show. The showrunners of SUPERNATURAL should be watching this show and taking NOTES. *THIS* is how you do a damn show with a "free flowing storyline and concept"...

American Horror Story is doing SO MUCH MORE AND DOING IT SO DAMN WELL in barely 25+ eps that SUPERNATURAL has done in NINE FUCKING YEARS

My god...can we crown AHS THE genre show of the Fall? can we?

The Walking Dead? too uneven.
Sleepy Hollow? Love it, but no
Grimm? *side eye*

AHS Is the undisputed heavy weight champ in this bish.

but yet your ass STANS for Supernatural when you were TOLD AHS reigned supreme...you late, but you FINALLY got to the party lol

but yea...AHS is on some other level of outstanding wildness.

Like, i'm glad it's only 13 episodes because I think I'd lose my fucking mind if this show was 22+ lolol

but you're right with the other shows you named...

Sleepy Hollow won't come close to it, but I'd put Hollow right underneath it and *WAY* above the other ones...

Hannibal would be slipped right between AHS and Hollow though.

nah, sleepy hollow is right behind it..not right up on it but very close.

BOTH shows are featuring quality writing, a SERIOUS commitment to the worlds and narrative they created for the show, and strong, fully fleshed out characters (specifically the women on the show).

it would go for me:

1. AHS
1. Hannibal
3. Sleepy Hollow
4. Grimm
5. Dracula (strong pilot but don't know how it looks visually)
Supernatural isn't even TOUCHING my list....

I mean, as someone who likes watching actresses ham relentlessly and toss bitchy one-liners at one another, I have no problem with that. The horror didn't really affect me too much... but we did get Jessica Lange snorting coke to In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, Gabourey Sidibe stabbing her own hand smugly, Tess Farmiglia fucking a boy until his head explodes from the inside, and Kathy Bates rubbing blood all over her face before "creating a Minotaur." Which is all pretty hilarious and fun.

So I'll keep tuning in to giggle at the campy lunacy-- Murphy's desire to push the limits of good taste on TV with a straight face is pretty admirable (he does it on Glee too).

Season 1 was on some ole campy schlocky pulpy goodness. Season 2, still camp, but less so and it DEFINITELY had it's serious moments. So far, I don't see much camp at all. WAIT WAIT WAIT, the antebellum New Orleans scenes were VERY camp.

lol

So I guess I can see where you're coming from. I guess we shall see where it goes...

... is if we introduce some drag queens into the mix.

The first episode was literally called "Bitchcraft." LMAO.

I don't mean "camp" as a slur btw. I enjoy some campy goodness. The show is ostentatious and gratuitously shocking and full of super-artificial camera distortion and catty bitches being catty in big hats and high heels. My bread and butter. I just don't find horror especially unsettling when it's surrounded by this style.

My favorite scenes are not going to be the ones where they're trying to scare us. They're going to be the scenes where Lange and Bassett are wearing vampy outfits, sneering about making people pay as music swells and a fish-eye lens zooms in on their excessive posturing.

I might have to concede it was campy in content. HOWEVER, I felt the tone and the issues they were dealing with were serious. Anyway, I ain't gonna go back & forth w/you. You kinda acknowledge that the 'campy' moments take the edge of the 'scary' moments and that's the balance I think they need. There's OBVIOUSLY room for adjustment tho.

No one has ever accused Glee or Nip/Tuck of gritty realism, lol. If I wanted that, I simply wouldn't watch.

I like audaciousness. It's the same reason I like Lee Daniels. Even when I think it's a hot mess, there's an inherent boldness where most shows would ease off the accelerator.

lol, I know last year had the spankings and Sevigny's loony character to start us out, but this one feels campier to me as I can see that the entire foundation of the season is in powerful women (in awesome hats) being bitchy to one another in hopes of reigning supreme. John Waters is sprouting a boner somewhere.

How can those be darts?

The last two seasons were both incredibly campy. Upping the ante and trying to add as much shock as possible-- a huge element of camp-- is precisely what Murphy tries to do each time he steps up to the plate with this show, is it not? Doesn't he WANT each new season to out-"holy shit" the last one?

THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH CAMP. For the last time. lol. I'm just consistently amazed that something so campy is so incredibly mainstream, especially this particular style. Generally, camp of this manner ends up with cult followings, not covers of EW.

And yes, Murphy continues to outdo himself, in my opinion. It's not because it's women-centered that the show is more campy this season imo, because last season was nearly exclusively women-centered as well. The fact is women being bitchy to one another is, again, a huge element in camp. It's not "shade on a woman-centric show" to call it campy when I'd argue that's both what Murphy is going for and what he's founded every show in his career on.

It's just my opinion. I found my jaw dropping-- something I WANT MY CAMP TO MAKE ME DO-- more in this premiere than in the early episodes of last season. Personally.

I'm not trying to piss people that I like off in this post though. So if y'all think that calling it camp is some sort of slur or you don't want to talk about it, I can just leave and talk about it with non-OKPs. I think it's a super noteworthy and enjoyable part of the show.

yet *NONE* of this is camp. Nothing in the interviews Murphy has had about this season describes camp. Yea, the tone will be a bit more comedic. But, not campy at all.

Sorry, but he's framing this season around New Orleans voodoo, witches *AND* a character who is based off a real woman who murdered and tortured slaves?

yea i struggle to see the camp in this.

and yea, i'm with lfresh you are reaching. And that's okay.

And I still find it odd that you're even watching given that this is a HORROR show and we all know your stance on horror....

but yea you can have the "camp"...just don't expect me or anyone to give you a pass when you call this show camp.

SyFy's BEING HUMAN is camp; the shittier seasons of SUPERNATURAL are camp, even aspects of BATES MOTEL are camp...

AHS this season..sorry, i'm trying to see the camp in this one and I don't. At all.

Sorry sankofall I see both sides now and I'm really not a horror watcher I figure if I can tolerate this then this isn't the average horror and I can see how the campy moments takes the edge off enough for me to watch

that's obvious, but none of this season is camp and if you think that well that's on you.

but you haven't even watched a full season of the show yet.

those two seasons were camp.

this season...not even close.

This season is extra campy, but for the other posters I don't think they're applying "camp" quite right to the horror genre.

Evil Nazi scientists in hiding isn't camp. The Supreme telling her charges to "wear black" then they come out in pointy hats *is* camp.

"Camp" is a tongue-in-cheek, highly self-aware notion of poking fun at itself. It does not necessarily apply to absurd elements that takes itself seriously (especially in the horror genre).

Camp is especially effective in horror because the tropes in horror are so well-defined. For real horror fans, camp is why movies like Scream, Evil Dead and Cabin in the Woods are held in such high regard.

And I LOVE Ryan Murphy's constant and consistent of application of camp for AHS... but trying to "quantify" one season more than another would be very, very difficult to do.

The show IS incredibly campy. Anyone saying anything different ain't paying attening. *I'm* saying, given all that happened in last season NO WAY is it MORE campy, at least not yet.

This is an error of magnitude, not a complete error.

the first two seasons were campy as hell (because I laughed more than I was scared)

but this season....nah. i'm not seeing the camp.

you may get one liners but i struggle to see how you can camp this up given the historical figures that are IN the show, where they are shooting and what's being featured (voodoo)

but y'all go ahead and swear its camp to appease certain folk in this post.

um no.

the show isn't even remotely campy as compared to the other two seasons...

in fact, it's way LESS campy than the other two in a lot of respects..

im sure the vileness coming up this season is only eclipsed by the actual stuff that went on but was never discovered

sooo.... not much camp there imo.

now the hospital retaliation rape and catclaw one liners... yea pretty giggly stuff

mother and daughter last night. Don't know if it was just the hair/makeup, but I never really noticed the similarities before.

And I can't WAIT until Lily Rabe's character comes back (I assume she is, since she's a necromancer and you're not going to use her for one minute in one episode.)

That whole opening sequence was almost too much, though.

That opening scene. Wow. Compared to the last two seasons openings, this had the strongest impact. Pretty gruesome. I hope the minataur returns in some capacity a'la Rubberman/Bloodyface, maybe with the help of some voodoo. Kathy Bates is obviously having a lot of fun chewing the scenery.

That said, I can already tell that the tone of this season is going to be a little campier and less serious than last, which I'm okay with as long as I'm able at some point to develop an emotional connection with one of the characters like I was able to w/ Jude, Lana and Kit last season.

Bummed that my girl Lily Rabe got less than a minute of screen time before they killed her off, though her character does seem instrumental in bringing Jessica Lange's character back to the boarding school. Really hope she gets resurrected, too, or at least gets more flashbacks. Seems like a waste to announce her return only to give her a bit part.

Alfonso Gomez-Rejon did his thing with the directing and cinematography. This show has better production value and shot composition than most horror films that are released theatrically these days. Anybody else notice that staircases always play a prominent role on this show?

Emma Roberts is the only one I'm not feeling as of now. Her presence is very...I dunno. It's acting like that which makes me not like most TV drama. Hope Frances Conroy's role increases, her scenes with Jessica in the last two seasons have been some of the most memorable moments on the show. Oh...and Angela Basset's introduction gave me the chills. Very much looking forward to next week.

81. "Murphy on this season, next season, and a possible Coven spin-off *swipe..."
In response to Reply # 0

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/american-horror-storys-ryan-murphy-645415

FX unleashes the third season in Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk's American Horror Story anthology on Wednesday with Coven, a witchy-themed season that stands in stark contrast to last season's deeply twisted Asylum.

This year, Jessica Lange goes head to head with Kathy Bates -- and Angela Bassett -- as Fiona, the long-absent Supreme who returns to oversee her coven of young witches studying at Miss Robichaux's Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies, that coincidentally is run by her daughter Myrtle (Sarah Paulson). The present-day story again weaves in flashbacks to reveal the witches' heydays and those who wanted them burned at the stake. Among the key players is Bates' Madama LaLurie, based on the historical (and horrible) woman who used the blood of slaves in a bid to fight the aging process, among other twisted ventures. (Murphy describes Bates' LaLurie as "eight times worse than Misery" if that gives you any indication of the horrors to come in Coven.)

"It's a meditation on race relations in this country. It really is an allegory for any minority group living in our country," Murphy told reporters following a recent screening of Coven.

In addition to the central adult story featuring Lange, Paulson, Bates and Bassett, Coven will also explore the next generation of witches -- played by Taissa Farmiga (Zoe, who has the ability to "f--- someone to death"), Emma Roberts (Madison, who has Carrie-like abilities), Gabourey Sidibe (Queenie, a human voodoo doll) and Jamie Brewer (Nan, clairvoyance), each of whom have their own unique abilities with one likely to be crowned the next Supreme (much to Fiona's chagrin).

"I love the formula of the youth story with the veteran actress story," Murphy notes, singling out Coven as his favorite yet of all three stand-alone stories. "We researched a lot about the Salem witches and the girls back then. … We have a lot of Salem flashbacks throughout the year where these girls, who are students, learn about their ancestors, and we deal with that. And more people come in to the show -- other witches -- to that house, and they have very specific powers."

"The great mystery of the season is which of the people you have met is the Supreme," Murphy says. "Who is going take Jessica Lange's throne? The show also has a really great thriller aspect to it this year -- you really don't find out until episode 12 who that is."

This year also marks the first that AHS will move from its typical home on the Paramount soundstages in Hollywood to location shoots in New Orleans, with Murphy giving Lange credit for helping to make the city a character in Coven.

"I knew we wanted to do witches, and that they were from Salem, but I didn't want to do it in Salem. Jessica kept saying she wanted to do it in New Orleans, so I had to make that work," Murphy explains. "It made sense to me that the true witches were smart enough to escape and had fled."

At that point, the co-creator began researching myths from New Orleans and came across horror legends including Madame LaLurie, Marie LaVeau (played by Bassett), as well as the Axeman serial killer. Not to be outdone, Coven -- like season one's Black Dahlia and Asylum's Anne Frank -- will feature other historical figures weaved into the story.

Also returning this year is season one breakout Farmiga, whose young witch will be paired with Evan Peters' Kyle in what's likely to be a tragic romance given Zoe's abilities.

"I wanted to write something for them, a love story, but I wanted it to be different," Murphy says of his young muse. "She finished season one and went off to make the Sofia Coppola movie, and there was really no part for her last season. After Jessica and Sarah, she's the one I called in first. love working together and Evan's girlfriend is also working on the show, but I made that work. love story in some weird way is reincarnated in the myth of the show."

Following a heavy Asylum season in which Paulson's Lana Winters' aspiring reporter was raped and forced to undergo aversion conversion therapy and electroshock therapy, Paulson's Cordelia Fox starts the season very prim and proper as the head of the young school for witches. Murphy compares her Coven character to Bewitched's Samantha -- at least at the start of the season.

PHOTOS: Unmasking Rubber Man: Behind the Scenes of 'American Horror Story'

"I was always fascinated by the dynamic of the show Bewitched and thought, 'What would really happen if Samantha listened to Endora and just went bat-shit dark crazy,'" Murphy says. "There's something that happens to her character around episode five that forces her to realize that her mother may be right . They're an odd mother-daughter relationship, and they really don't like each other. Where Sarah starts and where Sarah ends up is completely the opposite of who she's playing in that first episode."

As for the future of AHS, Murphy sees the series running for a long time with self-containing seasons -- but is open to the idea of Coven spinning off.

" John Landgraf and I have always spoken about how this is a show that is ripe to spin something off, to do something different," he says. "I already know what next season is. It's not witches, but maybe something will happen. We're talking about it. I have the next season of Horror Story already plotted, and it's quite different and fun."

Meanwhile, plans for an AHS companion series, in the same vein as AMC's The Walking Dead talk show The Talking Dead, are not likely to move forward.

"They asked me to do that and I said no," Murphy says. "With a show like this, sometimes I even debate doing this kind of stuff because I feel like I have a tendency to open my mouth too much and give too many spoilers away. I think I would just be ad nauseam. Maybe someday. This show, particularly, has a lot of secrets and things that kick in around episode five and after that I won't be talking."

While it's anyone's guess what the likely fourth season of AHS will look like, Murphy will continue to plant the seed for the show's future in one of the final episodes of the year -- and possibly more. "I thought it would be really cool with this show -- and I might do it this year -- that the finale airs and then I announce what next year's show is by using some sort of visual thing," he says. "I think we're going to try that this year because people would really love it. I loved last year laying in those clues. The last image of the season will be, 'This is what you're getting next year' and we'll announce the title."

- I do not see the camp in this, but maybe we're all working off of different definitions of camp. If you're viewing it as humorous because of its ridiculousness then yea i get that, but if you view it as serious consequences set in a real sort of way then camp doesn't apply. Either way, we're all enjoying it.

-Emma Roberts is REALLY good, as we've all mentioned that Bus scene was fantastic. Great way to introduce her powers.

- This season seems to be darker already with the introduction of everyone's powers, Gabby being the human voodoo doll was very impressive. I'm a fan of the way this is written and the way it plays out.

- Jessica Lange will once again be up or an award, but I must say this is Sistah Jude all over again without the Mass accent. I'm all good with that as she was excellent, but that's what we're in for.

- The slave aspect makes this so dark and real, not nearly as wild and splotchy as last season with human skin face dude. I think that portion will give us the tension with Angela Bassett and Bates. I'm very excited to see where this goes.

I have a feeling we're going to have a strong conversation about this on sunday evening.

And "camp" doesn't mean "absurd", people.

A wholly traditional story arc can be extra campy, or a completely ridiculous story with disparate elements can have no camp whatsoever.

"Camp" is an aesthetic tone, not (necessarily) the inclusion of absurd elements.

It's the X-Men as witches. Paulson and Lange are Xavier and Magneto. Jean Grey is there, Rogue, Storm, Apocalypse, etc.

Seriously though, the cast is simply amazing, will be fun to see them play off each other for an entire season.

I said WTF in the first 5 minutes, and I knew I was in for a wild ride.

But why couldn't she take the bullhead off the dude? I heard of accepting someone as they are, but damn.

That shot at the end of Fiona walking done the street made me forget how old Jessica Lange really is. She makes 64 look pretty damn good

For all the from-left-field elements that's a hallmark of AHS, I've been pretty pleased in general at the tight ship that Murphy runs. Things often don't make sense initially, but I rarely (if ever.. I'm struggling to think of an example) notice any significant plot holes.

Lily Rabe owned this episode. Her character is gonna be dope once the season progresses.

These bitches are ruthless. The only one I really sympathize with is Tassia Farmiga (They are making her look extra smashable this season. Lord have mercy).

The insults Precocious was hurling were hysterical. Sabrina the Teenage Cracker had me dying. Fuck that shit was funny.

That had me rolling too. Bassett and Lange trading some fire-ass one-liners.

And obviously Lily Rabe strolling outta the swamp to Fleetwood Mac, looking exactly like Stevie Nicks. Also hilarious and awesome.

On a more serious note, I love the witch with Down syndrome and the way her character is handled. I know Farmiga is supposed to be the protagonist, but the witch with DS is treated so tenderly and is so grounded that I can't help but watch her in every scene and want to follow every move she makes. I thought Murphy got way too heavyhanded on Glee with his Down characters, but here, early on, I think he's realizing a vision that I really adore: a character with Down syndrome who isn't used as a symbol for kids with disabilities and their issues (which ended up happening too often on Glee), but is simply a human character that happens to have Down syndrome.

the first season, you can see an improvement with her acting. Not that she was bad before but she's much more fluid and comfortable now. she's great with non verbal communication (her facial expressions, her movements). i wonder if she got a coach.

I love how no one states the obvious with her, but they point out everyone else's flaws (physical or otherwise). But she is commanding right now...when she kicked lalaurie out i died laughing.

I also thought that Murphy did a great job handling a character with DS (same actress). She played Jessica Lange's daughter in that one, and Lange and the writers did a great job conveying the delicate balance between genuinely loving her daughter and... "disappointment" that she had DS.

I definitely agree with you though that his handling of Becky in Glee can be downright cringeworthy. That show in general is a trainwreck now though, and has been for a few seasons. Nothing.. fucking.. makes.. sense.

Incidentally, I'm glad AHS is done anthology style, because I think Murphy is scraping the bottom of the barrel for Glee. I'm only familiar with Glee and AHS, but it seems like he's at his creative best when he's constantly given entirely fresh material to work with.

156. "Director/Producer Alfonso Gomez-Rejon Talks AMERICAN HORROR STORY: COVEN..."
In response to Reply # 0

My nigga!!!

http://collider.com/alfonso-gomez-rejon-american-horror-story-interview/

From co-creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, the FX series American Horror Story uses a unique and compelling approach to television, with a different setting, different characters and a rotating cast of actors for each season. For Season 3, American Horror Story: Coven tells the secret history of witches and witchcraft in America, with a cast of powerhouse actresses that includes Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Patti LuPone, Sarah Paulson and Frances Conroy.

During this recent exclusive interview with Collider, executive producer/director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon talked about his path to becoming a director, how he came to be working with Ryan Murphy, the natural progression of his career, from episodic director to producing director to feature director, how much more involved he is with American Horror Story this season, how The Town That Dreaded Sundown became his first feature directing job, his unique visual style, and that he’d like to maintain a balance of television and film projects. Check out what he had to say after the jump.

Collider: You started off doing episodes for Glee, and then moved on to American Horror Story. How did you start working with Ryan Murphy?

ALFONSO GOMEZ-REJON: I’m really grateful to Ryan Murphy for so much because he’s fearless. He’s so confident. He has a very unusual and unique way of seeing the world sometimes, and he’s somehow able to translate that into entertainment for the masses, at the right time in pop culture. I think when he recognizes talent, whether arguably I have it or not, he has a way of just nurturing it. The Ryan Murphy television world has assistants who have become producers and writers and. If he trusts you and you have a unique way of seeing his world, he nurtures you. I can’t say enough about him. He just gives new people a shot, and it takes a lot of confidence and generosity to do that.

How did you initially make the step into directing?

GOMEZ-REJON: I’ve been clawing my way to directing since I was a kid. I started in the P.A. world and craft service and storyboard artist, with the eye on the prize of directing. When I was directing second unit on Babel, I ended up casting most of the unknown parts. In these weird circles, I was this guy who found these kids on the streets. I got introduced to Ryan because he was having trouble casting the Balinese section of Eat Pray Love because he wanted real people and wasn’t getting it, and he heard about me because I was that guy.

So, I got a call and I met with him for five minutes. I went out to Bali, and I cast all of these supporting roles. I love that stuff. I just love actors. And then, he asked me to direct second unit for him on Eat Pray Love. I was already booked on something else, but I joined them later. And then, I wrote him a thank you email and I got no response. I was like, “Okay, that’s it.” We didn’t interact much on set either. I was doing my thing. He didn’t even know me, but he was very specific about what he wanted and I would interpret what he said. I didn’t get a reply, but then, all of a sudden, I got an email out of the blue that said, “Do you want to direct an episode of Glee?” I guess it took time for him to see my footage cut together.

So, he sent me the script. TV is all new to me because I came from features. We sat down and I had my first tone meeting. At that point, I had storyboarded every framed and I had a book of boards, which is the feature side of me. It was all very structured. But, he didn’t even want to look at them. He said, “I trust you. Do whatever you want. If anyone tells you that you can’t do something, just tell them that I want it.” He basically said to lie to them, but I never had to use the line. And I don’t think he showed up on set once. That was my first “directed by” credit that wasn’t second unit or an assistant to someone else, and it takes a lot for someone to do that, and have faith in you and follow through with it. So, that episode worked out and I’ve been a part of his family ever since.

Has it felt like a natural progression to go from Glee to American Horror Story, and then becoming a producing director for Coven, and even doing a feature film with together, with The Town That Dreaded Sundown?

GOMEZ-REJON: It does, but I try not to think about it too much. On some kind of unspoken, deep, deep level, I think we have an aesthetic that we both understand or connect to. It’s not that we see the world in the same way because we have very different points of view, but we’re both visual stylists. He has an aesthetic that I really appreciate, and I think he appreciates mine. I was attracted to Glee and thought I could do it because it was an unusual TV show for me, as a viewer. I love visual stylists like Bob Fosse and Vincente Minnelli and Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger with The Red Shoes and The Tales of Hoffman, and I thought I could bring that to it.

Musicals and horror films can be very non-verbal and very pure cinema with movement. The camera is justified in being a character. It can really move and tell a story, and literally direct you to look here or there. I’m a fan of musicals from those great masters, and I was able to have an opportunity to express myself in musical numbers with Glee, in addition to the dramatic side of it. And horror allowed me to quickly switch gears.

american-horror-story-coven-posterThe material is so good and the writing is so strong that that’s why someone like Scorsese can make something like Kundun in Tibet. It’s just about what you connect to emotionally, and if there’s some kind of truth to the characters and to the moments that you can understand. That’s all you need. The fact that it allows you to make the camera a character is secondary, but it’s exciting, as a filmmaker. You really have to push it, and you’re given the freedom to do that. You get to interpret it and see how you’re going to make it your own. There’s something to be said about that, and it’s very unusual for me.

How has being a producing director on American Horror Story: Coven changed things for you, this season? Does it give you more creative freedom?

GOMEZ-REJON: That’s what the first episode is all about. At the same time, you’re allowing other directors come in and push it, and I learn from that as well. I have more of a dialogue with Ryan, because it’s ongoing for every episode and not just the ones you’re shooting. Naturally, because of how we met, I’m more involved with casting than I was before, which is a total treat and very much a director’s job. The fact that a showrunner is bringing me into that part of it, as much as he has been, is great. Also, we’ll talk about a lot of the decisions together. Having that dialogue with him, to me, means a lot because I always get something out of it.

American Horror Story has the look of a film, but you’re doing it on a TV budget. Did that help, when you actually had to do a horror film on a limited budget?

GOMEZ-REJON: Yeah, we shoot on 35 mm. Sure, that absolutely helps. Also, who your cinematography is, if they have a TV background, then they’re quite nimble and able to adjust quickly, like someone who’s maybe just pure film. It’s a great asset to you, on your first film, to bring some people with you from the television world because they understand the speed that you have to work with to get your grand ideas down. If someone already knows you from being in the trenches with you on this TV schedules, and then you have a little bit more time, it’s a treat for them, as well, because they can give you more. The transition to making a low-budget film was certainly easier because I’m further in my career, so I can own my title a little better, and then I had a support system that knows me and that I was able to bring along, as well. That was invaluable.

After having tried for so long to get into directing, why The Town That Dreaded Sundown for your first feature?

GOMEZ-REJON: Well, I’ve been developing things, and they’re still out there in different stages. Film moves very slowly. There are certainly a couple other interesting projects out there. But, I sat down with Ryan and we talked about the material, what I liked about it, and how I saw it, and Ryan makes things real. At some point, you have an opportunity to not be a first-time filmmaker anymore. You can embrace the genre and show the world how you can tell stories on a bigger scale. It was an opportunity that I couldn’t pass up because it was with him and it was a wonderful screenplay. I had these ideas that I wanted to get out that were deeply personal, oddly enough, that I buried in there. It was also the fact that it was actually going to happen, and not be developed for three years or 10 years. It was going to be shot, and he was going to have my back, throughout the whole process. That’s a luxury.

If you were going to do a remake, was it important to you to be able to have your own vision and take on the story?

GOMEZ-REJON: Yeah, but it’s not a remake. It’s a reinterpretation of that film. It’s a meta-movie, if you want to call it that. The original movie is a character. Yeah, if there isn’t anything you can offer, then what’s the point? I would hate the day when I’m just taking a job because I need it. Hopefully, you have a point of view, every time you get a chance to express yourself.

Has all of the experience you’ve had now helped to give you the confidence for some of the more unusual or different shots that you’ve done on the shows that you’ve worked on?

GOMEZ-REJON: I don’t set out to make something unusual or different. It’s just how I see it. The fun of directing for me, other than working with the actors, is trying to extract those ideas that you have in your head and make them real. There are sequences that you see a certain way when you read the script, and then you doodle drawings or storyboard them, and the fun is how you make it real. It becomes an extension of your imagination to make something tangible and concrete. It changes and evolves. I don’t set out to do something weird, but if you see something a certain way and it’s a little left of center, and you can realize it, that’s a real thrill. Ryan is open to seeing things in context, and that’s the freedom that he creates and the freedom that you then allow yourself on set to explore something a little unusual. Certainly, a scene can work without it, but he’s fearless that way. He just takes chances.

Are you looking to keep a balance between working on television and doing film? Do you want to stay in both worlds?

GOMEZ-REJON: Yeah. If you had asked me a few years ago, I probably would have said I only want to do movies because each story that you can communicate to the world is quite personal, and TV is a different kind of machine. But, being exposed to the Ryan Murphy machine, it is very much a personal extension of him. So, if I can learn from that and tell longer stories that are quite personal, and balance that out with features, then that would be the ultimate dream.

American Horror Story: Coven airs on Wednesday nights on FX.

Fucking LOVE the pacing on this show... going from one jaw-dropping moment to another is the norm, not the exception.

And this is way too early for speculation, but I'm already wondering who the heck the new Supreme is. I can see great arguments for each of the witches... I would trip out if Queenie was the Supreme and she switched sides to Levaux's crew.

And Lange should do this show forever because she is so great at portraying characters you root for but are characterized by sinister motivations.

I don't know if anthology-style AHS could ever crack my "favorites shows of all time" but it's easily one of my fun-nest (if not the MOST fun) hour of television every week.

Man.

She's never been allowed to go this far into the hambone realm before. That includes Rat Race.

She literally HISSES her lines.

Magical.

Like I was so unprepared for the myriad of events

* the incest between the mom and son
* Gabby trying to get freaky with the minotaur
* Fiona killing the teen witch

I MEAN...come on. I really didn't expect that to be the incest story line. I was wondering why she kept looking at him like wow but she been molesting her son. Didn't she find it odd his body was different? didn't stop her though. Trifling.

Now fiona has killed at least two witches (we know she killed more) so i can't wait to see what the Council says. At the same time, she's the Supreme.

This was really good. Like i was in the house in shock and awe at this episode.

That's also the name of my one man show.

But yeah, Madison getting killed was far more shocking than either the minotaur or the mom molesting her dead Frankenstein son. Also, I kind of assumed they were setting Zoe up to be the new supreme.

... they showed first episode when they killed two of the main players who popped back up nearly immediately that the main folks are gonna stay dying and coming back, lol.

When they were playing pool, and Jessica Lange saw someone else for a second, I was like, "yup, either Emma's dying or Lange's gonna use that ol' face-suck to try to get dat youth."

Precious reaching up into her folds was by far the most shocking event of the season. I expect rape/incest/fucked-up sex to come in pretty often on this show... but I was BLIND SIDED by that, lmao.

This nigga Ryan Murphy seriously gives no amount of fucks and I give him major props for it. Fiona is gunning to be one of the GOAT TV characters ever.

Jessica Lange is really gunning for that Emmy. She's over due for that shit.
