Because I had missed the early episodes but was now able to watch 'em back to back, it was surprising, for instance, to see Betty enjoy so much early success, whereas Elia was at the bottom initially. Of course she turned it around mid-season, but, because of those first bumps, I'd say the most consistent and standout chef was Sam, followed by Ilan, who, admittedly, seemed to be distracted in the more recent episodes. Marcel was at the "chopping block" a little more often than the other three, but he had some top moments as well; he was probably the most up and down of the remaining bunch.
With all that in mind, I wasn't shocked to see Elia go home, nor was I surprised to see Ilan make it. I also wasn't really shocked to see Marcel go on. He made a good dish when it mattered, and he was always capable of that. However, based on the overall show, he wouldn't be in the league of the top two chefs.
Conversely, like most people who thought Sam was a shoe-in since the start, that he was the most mature, keen, and "grown" chef, it was weird to see him not make the finale. Like they said though, he didn't lose, but just didn't do enough to convince the judges of a win.
On another note, it's kinda shitty how the latter episodes were marred by so much confrontation.
On a second note, Marcel's little soulless patch is the worst piece of facial hair since Ashton Kutcher grew something below his nose and called it a mustache.
