'Breaking Bad' gets second season AMC brings original drama back for more By MICHAEL SCHNEIDERMore Articles:
AMC has greenlit a second season of original drama "Breaking Bad." Cabler picked up 13 episodes of the skein, which comes from scribe Vince Gilligan and Sony Pictures TV.
"Breaking Bad" stars Bryan Cranston as a man who discovers he's dying - and turns to manufacturing meth in order to help secure his family's financial well-being.
Pickup makes it two-for-two for AMC, which also gave a second-season order to its other original drama, "Mad Men."
"From critical praise to strong ratings and a devoted audience, 'Breaking Bad' further reinforced AMC as a top producer of high-quality, distinctive television," said AMC exec VP/GM Charlie Collier.
Sony Pictures TV programming/production co-presidents Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg called the show "a labor of love."
"Everything about this show has been validating, from the moment Vince Gilligan came in the office and pitched us this idea," Van Amburg said. "When you hear that level of passion from a writer, it's contagious. You want to fight both in front of and behind the camera to protect that vision."
Originally developed at FX, "Breaking Bad" eventually wound up at AMC after Sony had success at the channel with the longform "Broken Trail."
"Breaking Bad" launched in January on Sunday nights. Among the channel's key adults 25-54 demo, show averaged 641,000 viewers, up 36% from the channel's year-ago perf. Ovrall, AMC is up in first quarter 2008 by 4%, and ranks among top ten cablers in primetime with men 25-54.
"We're fortunate to be in business with the right partner, and the pickup validates that," Erlicht said.
Gilligan exec produces "Breaking Bad," along with Mark Johnson. Besides Cranston, show also stars Aaron Paul, Anna Gunn, Betsy Brandt and RJ Mitte.
