also, being different doesn't = "a great album".

there's plenty of examples of this in the history of music.

i agree with a lot of others on this board that EC took me a while to get to appreciate and recognize it is a standout album by Common.

In ways its similar in my opinion of the transition Miles Davis made from his kind of blue era to the bitches brew era. that stuff is still hard for me to appreciate but it slowly comes around to appreciate the sonic environment they were both striving towards.

common was for sure getting somewhere with EC but wondering if the heavy criticism for lack of commercial success caused him to regress in his creativity and cater to commercialism. Be and Finding Forever are both good albums, but i don't really get the same mind blown experience as Like Water and EC did.

Just my opinion, but hopefully everyone can just give EC a good listening to and let it simmer and let time do a job on your ears.

and it sucks that music fans can't stop placing their favorite artist in a box and expecting them to make the same album over and over...not allowing them to break some glass and do something different...not allow them to be truly creative

Me'shell fans know the deal. Beck fans know the deal. Bjork fans know the deal. Each album will be completely and wholly different than the last..which is why you go buy that shit.

I don't feel the same way about this about this album since I think he was trying to do too many things on one album with 25+ artists and producers attached to each song. I listened to it but it was too far left field. It doesn't make it a horrible album since I don't like it, it's just my least favorite Common album to date.

- no disrespect, but it sounds like you dont know too much about EC. most of the production was done by Dilla, and there was hardly any other artists featured on it besides a few tracks (and i mean less than three).

- i had homies that just like you "just couldnt get into it", until they listened to it with me. i also had 2 15's in the ride and wasnt hitting the (>>|) button after 5 seconds like they were doing. most often they liked what they heard after a ride.

- i enjoyed EC. it took me a little while, but i finally got it. to me its EC is like Synthasizer by Outkast....a dope track but one you have to be in the mood for.

- these are the tracks i vibe out to when i break out EC:

soul power
aquarius
the hustle
come close
new wave (you have to wait until the hook on this one)
star 69
heaven somewhere

.....i mean how can one front on Heaven Somewhere???

- NO DISRESEPECT BUT I THINK I KNOW WAY MORE ABOUT THE ALBUM THAN WHAT YOU MAY KNOW. Check this source then come back:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_Circus_(album)

There are a TON of people involved in each track, plus Pharell, Questlove, The Neptunes, James Poyser and Pino Palladino did more production collaboratively than just Dilla. Also Prince, Zap Mama, Bilal, Mary J. Blige, Cee-Lo Green, Tye Tribett,Vinia Mojica, Soulgo, Sonny Sandoval, Omar, Dart Chillz, Laetitia Sadier, Jill Scott and many more were featured artist on the album (lyrics & background vocals included. Are you mistaking this with another work of Common's because this album is LOADED with appearances that make it a mess for me to really get in to.

Agreed, it's not for everyone, I like a few tracks but its my least favorite Common album. I skip through most of the songs each time I attempt to go on the ride that Common was trying to take his fans on. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who wants to get into Common for the first time.

Electric Circus is one of the greatest albums ever made. The music is perfect, and I totally get a cohesive feel from the whole album. Lyrics are on point, music is so sonically awesome, album cover is great, every track is near-perfection. If it's not your thing, it's not your thing. My favorite track is 'Jimi Was a Rock Star' and I tell Badu this frequently. Such a great thumping sound and their vocals meshed together is pure heavenly bliss. I also love 'I am Music', 'Soul Power', 'Aquarius', 'EWHF'....nevermind. I love it all. It's so nice to see a real artist take a gamble and put out something so creative. I wish he would have explored this direction a little more.

Electric Circus was good because it was ambitious. Much of what was done there, I felt Sa-Ra more or less refined - that is a kinda...psychedelic hip-hop sound. It...grows on you. I remember it was not in heavy rotation at first, but you really have to be in the mood. If anything, I'd say it's creatively a success and commercial fail hard. A bit cool that Common pushed it out at all, but ahead of its time and pretty heavy to digest. And even then, not his best work, but definitely an alternative experience.

He was hungry as hell on this album. He arguably hasn't been as on point and focused on the mic since.

...quality music no doubt, would not say great but definitly a good addition to the catalog of Com...that said, its 10x better than his last two efforts, which were super disappointing to me, that last one actually being garbage, something I thought I would never say about a Com LP...

If you listen to all the tracks seperately, you get a different feel than you would if you try to listen to it as one whole project. It wasn't garbage, but its like a basketball player with a million moves but no direction in which to go. You see potential for greatness, but with no direction your just moving in circles.

Loved the cd. EC and Phrenology was hip-hop at its most experimental. They both pushed the envelope. I always wondered how both would have been received if they were done by unknown artists.

When Com released more commercial stuff peeps here complained about that as well.
