"making a 'best of the Roots' cd is a daunting task "

i've been a fan of the legendary for some 15 years..

a friend of mine, not a big hip-hop head, asked me to make him a Roots mix cd.

3 factors were considered:

1. a little from each album (organix didn't make it)

2. handful of essentials (Clones, What They Do didn't make the cut)

3. my personal favorites (many of my favs didn't make the cut like

Water, Ain't Sayin Nothing New, Rising Down, Respond/React, Star

here's what i came up with.. what do yall think?

1. Proceed - DYWM
2. Section - IDHL
3. The Next Movement - TFA
4. Step Into The Realm - LIVE
5. 100% Dundee - TFA
6. Thought @ Work - PHRN
7. Here I Come - GT
8. Stay Cool - TTP
9. Sacrifice - PHRN
10. Long Time - GT
11. Act Too..Love Of My Life - TFA
12. Pussy Galore - PHRN
13. I Can't Help It - RD
14. Concerto of the Desp - IDHL
15. Don't Feel Right - GT
16. 75 Bars (Blacks Recon..) RD
17. The Seed 2.0 PHRN
18. You Got Me TFA

take out

don't feel right (average song)
i can't help it (nice, but not important)
75 bars (again, nice, but not better than web)
sacrifice
here i come (unless your friend is a wnba fan)

add in

what they do (great song, easily accessible)
web (thought's best "straight spitting" song)
do you want more?!?!? (shows off their range)
"the hypnotic" or "the 'notic" (both are better "thought spitting
about women" songs)
what you want

if i took off 'Here I Come' i'd replace it with 'Get Busy'

75 Bars is vital imo and better than Web. . .

Don't Feel Right isn't a favorite of mine but it feels like a representative of the GT era

I would agree, but that really goes for any "best of" type of mix. I know i made a best of Roots album a while back. I snatch tracks from every album and blended them nicely. Came out cool. Then i gave it away. Thats what i do. I made a best of Common, J Dilla, and Outkast mix, listened to them a few times and then gave em away as gifts. Spread the wealth, let everyone hear some good jams. Caring is Sharing.

For real I Can't Help It is probably my least favorite roots production. PG is coool and all but not greatest material. I almost want to say Sacrifice but I do love that song.

So you might want to allow yourself more than one disc.

Of course if you're using an iPod, space shouldn't matter.

The Spark over Pussy Galore that way you can explain what Malik B is all about plus you already have a few songs from Phrenology

Don't Say Nuthin' would also make it on there for me - I'd put that on over Don't Feel Right

I don't wanna be your friend
I just wanna be your lover
No matter how it ends
No matter how it starts

Forget about your house of cards
And I'll do mine
