That terrific Al Green album project "Lay It Down" - masterminded by Philly talents Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson and James Poyser - had a happy ending. Likewise boasting local sidemen, arrangers and engineering talent, this old-school R&B lovefest scored a win as Best R&B Performance by Duo or Group with "Stay With Me (By the Sea)" matching Green with semi-local guy John Legend. And in the Grammys' fine habit of splitting hairs, Green also claimed Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance for the album track "You've Got the Love I Need" featuring Anthony Hamilton.
But "Lay It Down" lost to (first-time winner) Jennifer Hudson and her self-titled set as Best R&B Album.
"I think Al initially thought we wanted to make a rap album," said Ahmir Thompson in one acceptance speech. But what he and Poyser gave the veteran singer was "a raw soul album" and actually his "first ever" Grammys in the R&B category.
