i mean, sure this is sad as fans. its sad for music, its sad for hip hop, but it's so much more than that, and sometimes it takes a plea like this to make that even more obvious.

If you're in a position to help out his Mom, why not? Think about it like this, take that $15 that would have been going towards a future release of his, and just donate it.

rest in peace Jay Dee,

Don't you think there is enough suffering in his family? At least bring something healthy.

Always comfort food when someone passes -- cooking is the last thing anyone wants to do and nobody wants some bulgar wheat tofu crisp when you have to say goodbye to someone you love. My mom to this day immediately whips something up to take over when we get some bad news -- it's just how we do.

1. Get life insurance and long term disability insurance, ESP if you
have a child.

2. Get a will made. There are standard forms you can buy or download, or you can use WillMaker Plus from Quicken. Again, especially if you have dependents.

3. Most law schools have a free clinic that may be able to advise you as well.

Black folks and young folks, this catches us more often that not...it ain't pleasant, but you GOTTA have your affairs in order.

Would that our mothers/children would be taken care of and not have to worry how they will survive or pay to bury us, in the event we were ever in Dilla's situation and died unexpectedly/too young.

I am not condemning Dilla at all...at his age/stature dying would be the last thing on my mind.

Take this as a wake-up call. If you are living on your own, and/or you have dependents, get some insurance and get your will drawn up NOW.

How are we going to do this? Since it's going to be okayplayers doing this, maybe we should consolidate as much as we can (in terms of form of payment).

I can do paypal if I can be assured that she'll get it.

Not that my donation will shake her foundation, but it's something. Upon hearing dude had a kid, and the fact that she's even doing this which says it's needed, I can break off a little.

im donating as soon as a dropcash/paypal thing is set up BUT what i think is
combined donations of okp-dilla fans <<<<< money a single okp artists gets for one show

thats what i think isa meant.
im quite sure both com, quest and `em are cutting checks that are relatively bigger than fans donations and mrs Yancey and Dilla`s beautiful daughter will not have to worry about their future.

if we bought his records, went to his shows (or those of us who could) - isn't that enough?

personally, this is not my business

its a tragedy what has happened, but the fact his mother is asking for money from his fans who have (i assume) already given alot to his career...

i don't know the details really of anything behind the scenes

i just find this a little bit like exploitation

no disrespect or anything

i read it as "if you were going to send flowers, just send the money you were going to spend instead" same thing with a card or whatever you were thinking about sending.

but if you weren't thinking about it, then the message didn't apply to you.

sorta like that donation post in GD. like it isnt say "you must donate" but rather, if you are going to donate, here are the specifics.

does that make sense?

after reading the article which let the public know how many years hed been in the hospital, how many specialists hed seen, how much medicine he needed, i can only imagine that people with the last names like trump and gates WOULDN'T need financial help.

If you think about it, all of the hits he produced,HIS family shouldn't need anything. but apparently they do.

But the public doesn't know what's going on. and don't really need to know the specifics.

I can't imagine his close friends and associates asking the public for money if it was only a $10 that was needed. askin for money for yourself is onething, but askin for money for someone else is another.

And for those that feel that they don't "owe" him anything, dont give and keep walkin. Hope you get to a $million that way.

I have to admit that I had a similar reaction. I love Dilla and his work...I had the impression that he'd been somewhat successful financially via work with major artists (some of whom were significant sellers)...I also assumed that his assets would be automatically passed to his next of kin by law.

But I realize that he was sick for a long time, and hospiatal bills are crazy these days. Plus I know little about estate/death tax laws, etc.

It just seems fishy that his the donations of his much wealthier musicians/collaborators wouldnt be enough. How does it get to the point where his fans (many of whom are, let's say, not that wealthy) are asked for a straight up cash donation?

I'm as much of a pragmatist as the next guy...money talks...it's just unusual to specifically request that flowers and heartfelt condolences NOT be sent, and to go straight for the money.

But hey...he has a dughter to take care of, and the main thing is to help those in need, no matter what the circumstances.

...needed constant medical care. If he didn't have insurance, which most musicians/artists don't, then he may have been low on cash by the time he died. Plus, how do you know that his friends AREN't chipping in. I would think they are, but having financial support from his fans (that he inspired a great deal) won't hurt either.

You're right...I'm sure his friends have contributed. Plus, a small amount from lots of people can really add up and help.

I guess nobody exepcts to go so young. Who has their financial matters arranged for their death at age 32...?

you must not know too many people that die with HUGE hospital bills... "in lieu of flowers make a donation to the family" is VERY common where i come from.. they are not saying not to send condolences (a nice card), its just you can only use so many FLOWERS.. for people who die that have thousands of people who want to give flowers, it gets a bit ridiculous, especially when the moneny spend on them could be put to better use.. flowers dont pay final expenses or medical bills..

I was in NO WAY trying to discourage anyone from giving money to support Dilla's family. I would'nt stoop that low.

I was just wondering how his financial situation got so serious at the end. I didn't realize he had such a long bout with his disease and was hospitalized for such a long time. Now I know.

Anyways, my apologies if my comment came across as insensitive. That wasnt my intention.

?uest is one of 'us' as well as one of 'them', if Dilla were more famous, some fans would organize this themselves pretty quickly
