I'm in LA, he passed a few hours ago (it's noon here). I gotta go. I'm on my way from the hotel to head over to the house....

... I'm crushed. So sad.

God bless the soldier!

:: UPDATE:: Jay Dee's Funeral Services will be held in Glendale, California on Tuesday, Feb 14th. The family has asked that location details of the services be kept limited to family, close friends, and business associates only.

In respect to this clear request, posting such info will not come from me. We all share this very sad loss... and I thank you for understanding why I can't and won't provide more information about the services here. Thanks much, OKPs.

It's a tough time... but we're making it through.

Very sad.

Hip-Hop producer/MC Jay Dee, also known as J Dilla, has reported passed away earlier today (February 10) in a hospital in Los Angeles, due to liver complications.

The beatmaker has been sick for an unspecified amount of time. His latest album, Donuts, was released earlier this week.

Dilla, who was a founding member of Slum Village and a member of A Tribe Called Quest's production team The Ummah, is best known for producing tracks for Busta Rhymes, Common, De La Soul, D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, and The Pharcyde.

Dilla has more recently worked with Ghostface Killah, Kanye West on Com's critically acclaimed album Be, as well as Champion Sound with fellow quirky producer Madlib.

Besides Donuts, he released another solo LP, Welcome To Detroit, in 2001, and has another album dropping later this year on Stones Throw Records.

Longtime fan Pharrell of The Neptunes, has gone on record calling Dilla one of his "favorite producers of all time."

Jay Dee will be sorely missed. SOHH will be sure to provide you with more information as it becomes available.

Damn. I had the opportunity to meet Dilla when he was working on the Electric Circus album. he was in the studio with Pino Palladino, ?uest and Common. Talked to him for a hot minute. Told him how much he inspired me.

Its crazy, because for the past few weeks, I've felt like my passion for creating has been dying. Like, I've had nothing but blocks. But now, if for no other reason, I feel I've gotta hold on just a bit longer, to preserve Dilla's memory, in some way.

Dilla, you are missed, but you live on forever by the way you've touched so many of us! Thanks.

I didn't know him but I love(d) his music - R.I.P. Dilla

I've been a fan of Jay Dee a.k.a. J. Dilla for a majority of his career. His music has served as an inspiration to me on several different plains; his passion for music, his dedication to being an innovator, his ability to see beyond the "guidelines", and just being someone whom was true to himself artistically. He lived for what he did and made no bones about it.

He worked with several of my favorite artists,including but not limited to,De La Soul,Common,Kweli,and Busta Rhymes. I often found myself in awe of his production,and the technics he used and executed in his production. I wanted so much to one day work with him in some capacity,it was on my music dream "to do" list.
If I feel this at a loss being only a fan and someone who loved his music,I can't even begin to imagine how those who knew him best and had worked closely with him feel.

My heart goes out to the family and friends of Mr. Yancey.

*R.I.P. J. Dilla*

I love and respect your music and may you help orchestrate and produce the soundtrack to the afterlife. For then we will know the music lives on...

yo. i really don't think DILLA knew how many lives he touched with his music. i never met him face to face, but he changed my life as a producer and a musician. i really don't know how to cope with the loss. i 've lost someone before that was close to me musically and considered him blood. when he died i felt real bad. i'm starting to feel like that again and like i said, i didn't even know him. my prayers go out to James Yancey and his family. Many prayers go out to the S. Villa fam. T3, Elzhi and Baatin, keep your head up and keep going for your boy, DILLA. This is a sad day for hip hop and especailly a sad for his family and friends. I'm not gonna lie....it's a very sad day for me.

i'm glad to see that james yancey, aka J. Dilla / Jay Dee has touched the lives of those in other countries.

I grew up with underground hip hop. In my high school days since '98, Jay Dee and his group Slum Village was a great influence in developing the style of hip hop that I've grown to love. I still remember when A Tribe Called Quest said that they were quitting, Phife said he wanted to do production with Jay Dee. Me and my friends were like, "JD? You mean from So So Def?" We eventually found out that it was J. Dilla that Phife wanted to work with, and we were relieved. "Whew! Now I can't wait till Phife drops some new jawns!" The real soulfull Detroit rhythm will live in my heart forever.

They had the Donuts Listening Party here in Toronto last week, and I was in heaven hearing the album start to finish on those big speakers. I used to go see the original Slum Village back when I was 15 and Dilla has been my favorite producer of all time since then. He's influenced me so much and touched my life though I've never met him. Wow... when I saw the pic on the front page of OKP that said, "RIP J. Dilla," I thought it was a joke. I'm shocked.

He's enjoyed his life and has made his mark on hip-hop, but it was still way too soon for him to go. My condolences go out to his fam and friends. This is a tough pill to swallow.

The last time I saw a picture of Jay Dilla, it seemed like he was gaining weight and looking better.

I found an article on MTV.com and started to sob...again I can't believe this...I am thinking about the first time I listened and loved the song "Climax" , I bought the Welcome to Detroit album.

This is so sad....OMG How is Common takin' this news. He was housemates with Jay Dilla and he is touring right now. This is such devastating news and so out of the blue.

Rest in peace brother Yancey, you will truely be missed. I got put on to Jay Dilla about 2 years ago, and today about half of my collection is comprised of Jay's beats. He greatly influenced my style as a producer, and changed the way I think about hip hop. He may be gone but he won't be forgotten.

I've lost family members before, but they were always distant. Other than that I've never really lost anyone I've felt an attachment to. I've always revered Jay Dee as a brilliant producer and a talent who got nowhere near the respect he deserved. His music touches people and brings them to another place. This news is reeling; I'm in shock. I respect this man so so much and now he's gone. I don't even know how to react. I'm at once crushed and angry. He was so young! He had so much left of life!! It doesn't matter what religion we adhere to, what God we worship. Jay Dee deserves a place in eternal sunshine because he has touched so many lives. He has affected so many. And now, we are left to feel this loss. Rest in Peace Jay Dee, we'll never forget your legacy.

Still Can't believe this, got a call in my 6th per class from my godfather tellin me we lost Dilla and I started to sweat and I nearly cried. I got home to discover the sad new about Dilla passing this morning and I will never forget it, also the ironic thing was my dad had a bag of Donuts for me. I'm only 16 but I was blessed to have the chance to see Dilla at my first concert along with Madvillain on 4/2/04. I was so hyped to see Dilla one more time for his release party but that will no longer happen. I'll never forget the first Dilla track I heard which was Drop. Condolences go out to his friends, family and fans he made all over the world, we've truly lost another great. I do not usually morn the passing of a person I never truly knew, but to day is different. Today J Dilla past away. J Dilla helped form my definition of creativity and soul in Hip Hop, damn in music in general. Many of the songs that have shaped my view of great music and as a result have shaped my life where touched by this man. Jay Dee was a talented man who career speaks for its self. Since we hadn't heard anything here for so long I was under the assumption that whatever had been going on was mostly rumor or that things had just gotten progressively better. I logged onto Okayplayer last night and my jaw just dropped, literally. I wish we could find out some details on what had happened and how he came to pass. The only thing I remember was seeing him in the photos from the Jaylib photoshoot over a year ago and we all knew something was going on...

Once I heard that Jay Dee passed -- If felt like I knew him -- I been rockin' Slum & Dilla since 97'.. He was a part of my life, He was my outlet -- I grew up listening to Dilla -- Anything Jay Dee produced I would run out and buy. His beats..........mann I can just close my eyes and let all my troubles go away for 3 or 5 mins on a Dilla beat.

I have literally lurked this site since before it was finished, and many, many time there have been things that I've had strong opinions about, very nearly drawing me to make this user ID and get involved. However, I'm kind of a quiet person, prefer to listen.
Today I can't help it. I am distraught over Dilla, I really don't know which way to turn. I'm here at almost 6 AM on the West Coast listening to "Welcome to the D" again and my hands feel shaky, for real. This is a greater loss than will be realized for some years.
Only Kanye and Pete Rock compare as far as producers can reach. I have Donuts ordered and it should be out here in a couple days, but I don't know if I'll be able to listen to it. This is a genius, one of the few true ones that we've experienced.

I was so saddened by the news. I got a myspace message about his passing at work on Friday at the moment that I was reading a Common article about him working w/ Dilla on his upcoming album.

Im in Detroit and hella disappointed w/ JLB's weak catalog and honoring of him.

Hip hop today has lost another influential innovator. Even though, he will not be remembered as the likes of Notorious BIG, Big L, Tupac, Aalliay, etc....he mae a very big imapct in my life. JD was my inspiation into finally start Djing and hosting my radio show in college. I made a point to play his innovative music along with other underrated producer and MCs. I am truly sadden by this.

I fell asleep on saturday listen to Dilla and woke up on sunday with it. And it kinda hit me in the kitchen, i had OFFICIAL running through my head amongst other songs. I was reciting it, "Holla...." and I choked up with tears. The hell.., i don't care about those that wanna talk about heads d*ck riding Dilla. I'm crushed at this news. It's weird, i feel i've lost someone close, thats how much respect & appreciation i had for the man. My sister & my ex was like this when Aaliyah passed. For me, this is something.

First time i'd recognised Jay Dee was around my boys crib during summer 2000 watching MTV and 'Climax' came on. MAN, that was nice...
i'd heard Dilla b4 but never knew it.

I just wanted to put it out there that I spent time with Dilla's mom last night and made a point to tell her that I physically represented at least 5,000 of you, people who literally wished they could be here in L.A. for the service to say goodbye and pass their respect to Jay Dee and Mrs. Yancey.

She is a sweet lady and a column of strength. She is holding everyone together. Know that when J passed, he did so in loving arms. She told me she truely appreciates everyone who is who is touched by his work. That was the only thing that he cared about and the only thing that is important. She said people being connected through music is how it's supposed to be. She also gave me a little hope and preview saying that Dilla meticulously planned out releasing beats and music like pieces of a puzzle and that it will be some next-level sound.

I wanted to share that with you. There are so many people hurting but all of us are connected and it's very powerful and hopeful at the same time.

It's too suiting to have his memorial be on Valentine's Day. He brought a lot of love out of us, didn't he?

Man- i still can't beleive Dilla's gone. He might not have been the best, but was closer to it than most. He brought a new sound that was not heard of in HIP HOP.Primo has his signature scratch chorus', Pete Rock has his horns, Dilla brought that hard snare that you now hear everywhere. R.I.P. Just signed up...Been checking OKP for some time, unfortunately my first post had to be in regards to the passing of the god, Jay Dee.

His passing shocked the hell out of me. My homeboy called me and told me, I cussed him out thinking that he was joking. He told me to turn my radio station to 88.1fm (some station here in Toronto). They were running a tribute show for him....I couldn't believe it, (still can't).

This Friday at Down One (a lounge here in Toronto) will be hosting a tribute to Jay Dee spinning nothing but Dilla tracks. If you're from Toronto, come through and represent.

Jay Dee, will surely be missed but his legacy will live forever through the music he's left behind.

Rest In Peace Dilla...

I remember the first time I heard thelonius or when I heard the signature of the legend on Fantastic Volume One. He just showed me something that I was afraid of, being different, being original and working hard on your identity. J-Dilla never tried to be anyone he wasn't. Commercial cats may have slept on him but this was a producer supreme for the heads that knew where it was at. The genius of the man is almost unparalleled, he inspired me into where I am taking my game. Rest in peace homie and we are going to make sure that we give respect to the torch you passed on to us.

Right now, cats are pulling out Common's Like Water for Chocolate and busting track two, "heat", or pull out Be and listen to tracks 6 and 11.

In fact if you down with what J-Dilla has been involved in buit you dont know what it is go to this site and get the definitive listing of the man.

I was just posting on ?uesto's blog about this but, I think I just now realized the magnitude of Jay Dee's passing. I was at Com's show last night in the ATL and it was an incredible feeling singing "HEEEEEEEY", the audience went bananas, we all vibed.....then Com hit up that encore and I swear I never heared "The Light" come in any clearer than it did last night! I was choking back tears (I'm about to now just thinking about it). "....there are times when you need someone, I will be by your side" I don't know man, that beat was hitting harder than ever! I'm gonna miss you Jay Dee!!

A week and a half later I'm still a bit speechless when I think of the impact that Jay Dee has made.

To have been the first to inform MANY of his passing by making this very post on my cyber-home of okayplayer.com remains a blessing. Props to ?uestlove, The Roots, and company for maintaining this platform. OKP truly is very important. To know that we have this site as an outlet of ideas and conversation should be looked to as a blessing by each of us.

OKP is proof that true hip-hop online lives. period.

Dillas passing is hitting so hard I can barely take the fall out... but I have backed-up a GREAT DEAL by not posting anything more. I have my work cut out for me in terms of how his life will be celebrated. Stay tuned! BBE has me on task for you guys!
