I'm looking to make mix cds for my friends but have no idea which software is good, there's so many out there. Any advice is appreciated.

that is, if you are trying to beat match stuff, and just trying to "pre-arrange" your mix. Ableton Live, warp feature, let's you beatmatch your tracks fairly quickly and easily, in arrangement view. You can even automate the tempo throughout the whole mix, and preserve the "pitches" of each song, so that the mix starts out slow then increases in tempo a little bit and then tapers off in tempo a little bit toward the end, all while beatmatching each track through warping.

As a dj I use software that mimics the dj experience. AtomixMP3 is cool, and the latest version allows you to mix videos alongside the tracks (not sure thats so useful when making mixtapes for your friends, but hell...)
