I use my PC, don't try to get me to shell out grands for more high tech shit, I just be making songs for myself really. NO aspirations of anything more. Anyways I used to use a cheap ass 10 dollar mic but I bought this new one. Without knowing my ass would need 'phantom power'

and nothing else (ie: beat machine, instruments, keys etc) then a preamp would a cheaper way to get what you need... now if you gettin into programmin music, you gon have to part with a lil more change and pop a purchase on an audio interface... most all these come with the required +48v you need... its up to you really... figure out what you plan to do, then do some research to see what would fill that void best for you...
over and out du
ps: i personally run on the lexicon omega (more cost efficient version of mbox technology) and i love it...
and it's usb, and usb powered, it's gonna be a lot better sound than just plugging a preamp into your line in jack (though I have heard a friend get really good sound that way) and you don't have to plug something else into the wall, and you have 2 channels

to a USB or firewire device.
It's something you should do anyway... and it's honestly a better use of your money than buying something that's exclusively going to function as a power source of some kind.
maudio, behringer, motu, edirol -- these are all brands you should look at.
USB powered. Phantom power for your Mics...ProTools for the beginner.
