"bang out": decent beat. only thing i would change is the kick in the drum pattern.

"some funk": niiiiice spacey funk. i am severely diggin this one.

"just a loop": hmm. i like the extra sounds and panning effects. it's a nice breezy groove.

"this time": hah, i like how you sampled this one. once again, if i could tweak anything, it would be the kick drum pattern.

Just A Loop kinda has a cooled out feel to it, real relaxed.

This Time's intro was Ill like e. coli, IMO. Drum setup under it is cool, but laid back almost to the point of being noticeably simple. Maybe just a switch on the 4th bar or sumn would keep it fresher.

Unfortunately, the other two joints won't load at all :-\

In response to Reply # 22

the joint changes and has breaks in it for the hooks. not sure if u were able to catch all that. yeah...its a simple joint so i threw some very noticable changeups (drums and sample both) in it on purpose for that reason.

good lookin on the feedback though.

"apraise": the keys really make it for me on this one. there's nothing like warm keyboards that bring some soul into a track. i like the use of the vocal samples, kinda reminds me of how Timbo used to use em a lot in his earlier shit.

"2gether": sounds like Kanye to me. nice.

"dre king": this is a fun-ass track. kinda Summery.

"produced by mass taih": i like this one the best. it has a GREAT buildup around the 35-40second mark. good stuff.

the TROMBONE.

Ergo, that beat is PERFECT, FLAWLESS. Nice turntable verb/echo effects, too. I do kinda wish there was a little more stereo worked into the drums some kind of way so that they could surround the centered 'bone lines.

sounds like music you'd put over a real cool scene in a film. like a heist, or a dude walkin down the street in slo-mo with a long trenchcoat and an uzi at his side.

"the kid snippet": too short, but ye..it is a snippet so...s'alright. need to hear more to have a proper opinion.

"she will never know...": this one bangs. the kicks are huuuge. i want em hehe.

"space is the place": add this to the stoner's aural diet too. mad trippy.

a section at a time as the innanets allowed.

I feel like the musical progression is a little short given the melodic nature of the guitar riffs...like they WANT to go somewhere immediately but are leashed back. Drums, in particular that kick arrangement and the hats/shakers, help keep it moving along nicely.

Sux I'm not able to hear something through without interruption, though.

doesn't get repetitive. u keep it moving, which is good when a track/beat is clocking in at over 4mins. keeps my attention.
ooh i like the added tablas near the end. and the main guitar is very cool.

nice!
probly the "fullest" track in this post thus far, along with Instrumental's. full as in it sounds complete n it has a lot more going on in it.

Yeah man...dope how you bring in a bunch of different sounds but keep the melodic theme consistent throughout. Drum break is well-timed.

I wonder how this joint would sound with lighter reverb on the drums, though...putting them more in-your-face and heavily contrasted to the delay-FX'd grunt. But that latin percussion-style arrangement is a winner all day, every day.

the snare has a little bit of extra feedback on it at the end. i'd maybe clip it some more and add a bit of reverb to replace it.

little tip/trick: the bassline is in the sample itself. What I have is two instances of the sample running at the same time, one with a low-pass filter on it (using the free Prosoniq NorthPole VSTfx), and the other unfiltered (though I should prolly run it through a high-pass filter). during the chorus, I have both running, for the verses, I only have the filtered version which gives you the bassline.

"baby don't": great sample. sumthins not gelling with the drums for me tho. not quite sure wat it is. might be the snare..too much reverb i think.

"mother": again, great samle. drums sound good, just the programming near the start goes off the rails a bit.

"only you": this is a heatrock, chuck in a bassline & an emcee, n blammo. BUT......!! i deduct points for the use of the chicken grease snare. sorry, it actually is a great clap/snare, but it's been so overused and done to death it makes me cringe whenever i hear it anymore. thanks a lot commercial radio n tv!!

"rhyme book": now this is phat. all round phat.

snare verb is pretty on point. IF you were to boost the snare, you'd wanna leave the reverb where it is, though..lol...but if I did hear anything funny, I'd say maybe the kick drum was beating that fonky-ass bass riff back too much. And turn the filtered section up! Let it crank! Those highs need to sing through for that 5 seconds! (IMO)

Vision gets some creativity points for that chopping and selection. Now in THIS I do have a reverb gripe, on that reverse cymbal...and the kick seems to have somewhat funny timing, like it keeps jumping its own groove just a little bit. Musically, I'm loving it though. Nice tag vamp on the end, too; this joint gets into some sounds that many a cat is scared to put under the knife.

Neo...yeah yo. Minor 9th chords are my favorite tonal harmonic construction. That clean guitar? Hard as the joint grooves, I do wish it had more than just one drop, but it's understood this was a short clip. Nice choice of sounds throughout.

In the second, it sounds like it's moving towards a jungle, dnb'ish sound, which can hit hard when not overdone. That said, I wonder if getting more drum involvement wouldn't move it with even more force.

At 2:25 or so, that higher countermelody IMO would SMASH with the right reverb to give it a little distance. Maybe a little stereo FX to spread it out, too.

In the last section, I wonder if some filters, even automation-controlled, would give that piano line more drive; it's sitting well on the drums but could stand more sonic development.

These sounds are raw in the engineering aspects, but there's some good things popping off. A few tweaks in mixing and sound production could bring some sections to the next level quick, IMO, without necessarily sacrificing grit.

welcome to the boards dude.

"i'll get by": very fluid n laid back drum programming. the piano sample is a bit disjointed for my tastes, but i think with the right emcee (im thinkn along the lines of a Wu-calibre emcee), they could rip it just right.

"nothing stays the same": again, piano doesn't do much for me. the drums are ill tho. actually it almost reminds me of some Bobby Digital shit.

everything, unless a joint is REALLY not happening, and then I'll destroy it..lol

But I remember the rolling council idea coming up in Aeon's Weigh In on An Idea Here post. In fact, did I mention it? lol

But hey: best thing we can do, IMO, is to offer thoughts with as much of our own perspectives present as possible. That's the real strength of the rolling council, the chance for decidedly non-neutral takes on the music folks present for listening.

say the vibe on Ain't A Dream fits the line nicely. Good choice of main pad sound, and it sounds like you matched up reverbs in the track pretty well, something which can make or break the music. Only thing I wish for in this cut is a *little* more life/movement in the bass line, esp. since you went to the trouble of filtering that sample thoroughly. But I'm an absolute fiend for bass lines; your mileage may vary.

Just The Way I Feel is rocking a FAT guitar one-noter on the left in the intro..good shit...now, this track is interesting. You've got some souled-out low rhodes and vocal loops, and much more commercial-sounding drums. In a way it's a little disconcerting (greater reverb disparities in this joint), but in a way it's interesting. I think I hate that open hi-hat that sits slightly left..lol. Just from hearing it so much in like club tracks, strictly my personal opinion on it. I hear you've got some skill laying out a sonic landscape, something not many beatsmiths know anything about.

Intro to the Philly Producer Showcase makes me wonder what you would do with a piano solo etude, #153 from the Mikrokosmos by Bela Bartok. Since it's several tracks together I'll pass it by for now.

Isn't that bassline in Sweet the same one on Crossroads? I'mma have to break that track out. This cut got Sade all over it at first listen, on the vintage RnB tip. That da da da da Da Daaaaaa Daaaaaaaaaa, Da Da da da/ kinda leapt out of the texture at me, like the note repetitions brought themselves undue attention and/or are too big or something; maybe some MIDI velocity variations would fix that..? Cool how you kept the bottom end on this joint reined in on both the kick and bass, helps bring the flavor home.

"compote": wow, only 1 word comes to mind...."hellish". lol. i can't think of an application for this, but if the drums were beefed up to the max i could see this being in fight scene in a film.

"1 4daghost": holy shit. this is awesome. candidate for one of the best beats in this post sofar.

"acme": more grimey sounding shit. these last two tracks sound like Donuts on CRACK COCAINE. they so need an emcee on em yesterday.

"mlv": got some sound issues with this one, too much static, but i dunno if that's intentional or not. ur chopping skills are fierce.

The sample arrangement for this cut is cool, but you can't switch it up much without messing heavily with the flavor...so drums are what's gonna drive the action. I'd like to hear what more you could add to it.

COSIGN on 14daghost! That chopping of the strings is great, and nice use of effects to keep the flow moving...clean blend of add'l sounds, and even these very low-key drums fit right in. I could offer some tips on the technicals of mixing this joint so it's less clipped-sounding, but maybe another time.

I'd love to hear what a break or chorus would come out as. Three of my favorite musical elements in this joint, namely the vibraphone sound, a working bass line, and some chromatic planing; that one snip that's raised a semitone puts a real nice spin on it...and that bass is nicely balanced between reinforcing the track's rhythmic ideas and providing some counterpoint.

For the second, the 3 on 2 switch at the beginning is already ill..lol...though that chromatic piano line is *SPICY*, meaning since it's a one-bar loop, it's possible to overuse it; to combat that, I'd recommend a couple breaks or short subsistution chops. Again, smart use of the bass frequencies in this track. Is that someone whistling up top? lol

"brick": very disjointed. i like that it's a bit intricate with the chops, but it doesn't sound too good to my ears. or maybe that's the way it's sposed to be. u could use this in a fucked up scene in a movie, easy.

"spacesuit": waaaaay funky. the way the vocals are freaked is very cool.

...from the ones on my myspace music page.
features live bass and wahwah guitar (courtesy of my older bro, who goes by the name of BASSCLEF). the drums were snagged from one of Prince's earlier jams & programmed (think "let's work", "sexy dancer", etc.). the whole thing is kind of an ode to that type of P jam.

"no rap": diggin the beat, but not the way strings are chopped.

"the last real digga alive": yeah, this started out fuckn fire. but all these pitch changes with the sample aren't too cool.

"sometimes": nice.

"stuff": i like that you're at least taking the sample at doing your own thing with it. but i'm just not a fan of the way you're using em. ur drum programming has been on point for all the songs sofar, tho.

"stress": again, not feelin the way ur just changing the pitch of the sample. it negates any sort of possible melody that can be created from the sample. maybe try sampling a longer length of the original track? iono. lovin ur drums.

"my perspective": started off a bit slow, but really builds nicely towards the strings. i think the only thing bothering me are the drums. the snare is too stiff, needs a bit of reverb to fit in more with the strings and the oboe (is it an oboe? clarinet? watever the fuck it is lol). it just sounds out of place. i rekn either replace it with a different snare, or ye, give it some reverb.

"out of the dark": lol @ the Coming To America sample. dunno about this one, doesn't really move me.

"remain the same": well, you can NEVER go wrong with sampling "Gemini". i like the drums, u kept it on a minimalist vibe like the original song. vocals sample sound good. this is my fav sofar.

"the sting": cool. lol. that's all i have to say bout that one.

thumping breakbeat sound joint after the initial 8 bars w/the clarinet. That woulda been intro HEAVEN..lol..but as the track is, it's got good things happening in it. Props bringing the perpetually slept-on wind instruments in, though it's hard to fit them into the modern palette. Still, the harp helps bring that home. The lone crisp snare sound threatens to turn the track into a club-pop type cut; to move away from that, I might recommend either lowering the pitch on the snare or stacking a lower sound under it. That and just a touch of very light reverb across the drums. And I may suggest flipping up the kick drum so it's not a one-bar pattern. Overall, this cut would benefit from going back under the knife some more, but it's got a good foundation to it; keep it up mang.

YO. Out Of The Dark needs, IMO, a BIG, HEAVY, GRUNGY, DIRTY SNARE DRUM, and a GRIMY, MEAN KICK DRUM. That shaker and the regular cymbal hits are just fine to me, and the pads/melody are cool. And bringing sumn from that CTA intro..lol...back periodically in the beat will add musical cohesiveness.

Besides, you don't want us to be hasty on the listen. Me, I'd rather drum up a nice stretch where I can pay real attention to what I'm hearing, and araQual's also a focused listener.

Incidentally, do you happen to have a soundclick or other myspace alternative with the music on it in case myspace starts acting up?

man, i think u already kno i like ur shit. using ur "buttafly boom" joint on the upcoming Lesson Mixtape.

"evolutionsolmusic": very funky. needs another instrument, or maybe more keys to beef things up. sounds a little barebones to me. get like a harmonica solo in there or sumn lol. just needs an extra thing to make it sound like a complete song for me. the drums are boomin.

"luxurious relaxation": lady, ur drum game is fierce. u really create a mood and stick with it. holy crap, the drum break near the 2min mark is lovely! this is riiiight up there with best i've heard sofar in this whole thread/post.

"on the 9sometimes 1": i think i just zoned out to this one. track was over before i realised it. i guess that's a good thing? i'm not even high right now (wish i WAS...fuckn lazyass dealer takin xmas holidays).

"selma": i like the way u chop samples. if i wasn't such a lazyass beatmaker, i would do something similar. but my mind is always moving at a million miles a second, so i never stop and give myself time to finely chop shit up. kudos on that. it may just be my speakers, but the bass is distorting in some places, but it's alright in others. some funkyass bass riffs in here.

Evolutionsolmusic got me in the Herbie mode now..lol; I think this cut, more than anything, is aching to get some vocals on it. I bet you could boost that electric sound AND the...harmonica? ha!...sound without compromising the groove in the least bit. Those drums are indeed beastly, though, nice and grunge-laden.

Is that Wes on LR? Either that or I mighta heard that riff on some late Charlie Christian or sumn. YO, hot tempo switch to the dnb..and you gon have to tell me directly you ain't borrow that break from somewhere..GYEAH!! The vibe of this cut is extra cool, though...although I do wish there were another lick to offset the one guitar chop, just for contrapunctus' sake. It was hard for me to even find something to look for in this joint, though; 'tis Official.

I think I'm in love with your hi-hat game on onthe9sometimes. I myself don't often leave enough open space in my joint to let me turn down the hats and have them still cut through, so it's a fresh change to hear it done effectively. Real cool cut, though, VERY nicely chopped, and the drums as a whole are definitely pulling their weight in leading the track. If I did want for something in this one, I'd say that you could use more of your stereo panorama. The snare has some discrete channeling, but I bet the samplework could benefit from some real creative panning, too.

"phat horns": phat horns indeed. nice.

"chinese banger": cool. i went through an Asian phase myself. it can really work wonders sometimes. i need to hear more of the main sample to make up my mind bout this one.

"spanish guitar": banger!!! wow this is sick.

"laid back guitar": sounds like the same guitar sample at the start of John Legend's "slow dance". tis good. i like all of these tracks.

got somethin with that "stay focused" joint...lots of energy in the rhymes. hook might not be my favorite part (daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyy), but it works. beat is dope, only thing i might add is bring in a kick and a snare at somepoint to make it really knock.

this is a great track.

i agree with maybe testing a kick and a snare in at some point after the first verse. the hook is fine imo. like, it's annoying but it has to be, you just wanna sing with the horn.

and because of that it works.

"stay focused": this is great. might need some drums droppin in the second verse or sumthn, just to switch it up while still keeping my head nodding.

"got to eat": very cool.

"break": another great sample. i like the emcees too.

"perpetrator": niiiice. all of these are great. perhaps ease up on the flange/phaser on this one a lil bit tho? otherwise it's all gravy.

Break, son. Clean bass riding that joint; that's the music's driving force, sounds like. Those drums are hittin, though; crank em up! Sounds like the emcee's hard at work on this cut, though; overall this is a real nice track mang.

Yo, Perpetrator got the sound of some classic West Coast in it. That beat just rides. Elle's capturing a sound with what she's doing, but I wonder if y'all couldn't bring it home more with either: some vintage grunge verb or: some HEAVY, smushing compression with some light filtering...or both!

Stay Focused is 98% a FIRE ASS CUT. Sounds like a couple seams could stand some filling in so it doesn't sound like breaks every four bars (reduces their effect). But Damn what these cats saying, that hook is WHASSUP! The emcee is bringing some fierceness; I'm loving this track yo.

Check it out...you got engineering lined up for her cuts? I'm asking because I'm hearing some stuff that could seriously pop off with some creative mixing..some next level type stuff, IMO.

"he's hers": a little too disjointed for me. i like the bassline (which im assuming u programmed urself?), the sample is a lil too overbearing. either limit its use or get rid of it i rekn (im talkn bout that muffled staticcy trumpet). the keys need to shine more.

"de foro": dare u say banger? i say so too.

"beat_2": hmmm, cool sample, but it doesn't go anywhere. too repetitive.

"dusted out": chiiiiillll. nice.

"hakim_olajuwon": first of all, LOVE the title lol. but it doesn't really go anywhere.

"living single": lol i remember the show. this is a nice enough beat, but i don't like the melody.

"flim_flam": yup, definitely an early 90s feel. i could see Chip-Fu flowin over this easily.

I don't know if it's too late to post in here, but I've got some stuff on myspace that I wouldn't mind hearing some thoughts on. They aren't hip-hop beats at all, really, although they are heavily influenced by hip-hop.

ok TRUTHFULLY, i don't mind reviewing ANYone who posts stuff. but it would be nice to see everyone giving everyone a listen, stead of only a few reviewing the many.

Far Beyond the One Purpose - This cut is so simple it's ridiculous. Perfect example, I think, of beauty in simplicity, though. Nice sax loop..and those piano chords were right on point. Only thing is, the drum pattern keeps reminding me of Crazy, the Gnarls joint; I think it's the crispness of the snare combined with that kind of kick pattern, at that tempo. The periodic triangle-esque hit sits well on the backs of the phrases, and overall the whole vibe of this joint is real easy to groove to. I feel like I recognize those voice clips, but I can't hear what they're saying and I'm too absent-minded to recall them.

Lucky is a HOT joint yo! That loop is of some beautiful orchestration, and I'm digging what you did with the drums, esp. the hi-hat. This is the type of track where I bet if you spread the strings out through the stereo panorama you'd get absolute magic. Either a stereo imaging plugin or the old doubling trick, I'd love to hear if you're willing to mess w/something like that. That kick is nice and juicy.

Breath of Fresh Air - good to hear you laying in a discrete bass line, and some real nice sounds in this joint top to bottom. That bass line switches up at the right time to kill any building repetitiveness without being too obtrusive, which is what it does best. Iunno...the sounds fit each other real well in this cut. I'm not sure if the drums in the intro are in the sample, but if it's possible, it'd be cool to hear a couple bars with no drums at all.

LISTEN TO ARAQUAL'S AND MY SHIT. lol

But that way, there's incentive for folks to get on the rolling council, and further incentive for its members at any point to be thorough in their reviewing. This system will only work if people want it to, and no matter what, everyone has to be able to contribute at least a LITTLE bit. If they do, everyone gets some listening in (it's good for you! let a veteran musician tell you) AND get honest reviews.

That's my idea, though; what do y'all think?
