"Seven Pounds"
Fri Dec-19-08 02:25 AM by Frank Longo

http://www.firstshowing.net/2008/10/14/must-watch-new-trailer-for-will-smiths-seven-pounds/

Finally the trailer is out. im still not sure what its about but i can't wait to see it. Will looks like he's gonna give another performance. I'm pleasantly surprised how big Rosario's part is. I think she'll finally get praise for her acting chops in this one and get major exposure.

Woody harellson, yes but BARRY PEPPER. thank god is guy is in another movie. He has to be one of the best actors out that no one sees much/talks about. very underrated guy. Can't wait to see this.

It looks like it could be interesting but I have to say the Rosario stuff turns me off. Maybe she'll get back to the 25th Hour/Shattered Glass standing and make me forget Death Proof/Gemini Division but right now I'm off the Rosario bandwagon.

I'd say it's third on my list of films for its opening weekend behind The Brothers Bloom and The Wrestler (but both are limited releases). Oh, and Doubt opens wide that weekend (which also features Yes Man and Tales of Despereaux)

Should be interesting. This is Will's biggest box office test and I have to say, this trailer didn't do him any favors.

Barry Pepper is way under-rated as an actor. He is very impressive in Flags of our Fathers and 25th Hour.

dunno if this is true but sounds plausible:

I don't get it.
What's the story?
Who's Will Smith character?
Why call it Seven Pounds?

Are we really watching this movie cause of Will Smith?

if this was another actor would this movie do numbers?

At first I thought this was going to be a horror/thriller.

EDIT: After reviewing the trailer a couple of times and reading the plot, I think Will Smith character accidentally killed probably 7 people (hints: in 7 seconds I shatter that). I don't know how, probably a major car accident, anyways, I think the seven pounds come from a baby, I guess during the accident he killed a newly born baby. I really don't know. In conclusion I guess he helps these people financially, maybe?

Could be that the seven pounds refers to him giving his "heart" to seven people through generosity ...

useless information: Human heart weighs on average around 9ozs.

I'll cut right to the quick: This is not, in any way, the type of movie that generally interests me. But I will say that I was impressed by what I saw from Will Smith, who I generally find seems to play his characters too broadly.

gets Rosario TRUE PRAISE for her skills...

cause folk SLEPT on DESCENT (2007), the indie she starred in and produced...had critics not have been so scared of the subject matter (rape and race) or how graphic it was, she would have in the running for awards....

but, i hear she could be a lock for best supporting actress, and if taraji p. henson is nominated for button, that's going to be crazy....

i'm going to check this out on dec 19th

actresses who has been consistent and solid throughout her career but yet hasn't gotten that one or two signature roles that kinda puts her on "THE MAP" so to speak, but WE KNOW she's been there for quite some time now....

i wasn't impressed with the movie...will smith was a distraction. but everyone else (Barry Pepper, Rosario, Woody Harrelson) were all good...

im going to see it with a relative so maybe ill have a different perspective the second time around.

in the movie...

but the subject matter, the overdone cinematography and direction and the not consistent enough tone in the movie killed it.

plus, no one wants to really sit through and stomach a film about rape...period.

but, i think she was good and most critics enjoyed her performance and everyone else in the film, just not the film itself--the direction, etc.

the makeshift-martyr aspect of the movie really bothered me. it was quite self righteous. like, it tried to force me to feel like he was noble for the sake of trying to be noble. i wish they would have worked harder to make it more understanding as to why he chose death (in a very weird way) than trying to find another way to help.

the story with him using his brother's i.d. etc. i wish that was more clear and also his friend (barry pepper). if your friend told you "hey i want you to help me out after i kill myself" you wouldn't try to find a shrink for him etc? that just seemed pretty fucking awkward to me.

it felt like i was watching 'i-robot' with the car accident/someone died and he feels guilty aspect to it. and last but not least, will wasn't charming (he was at times) but came off as a very weird semi-stalkerish character. i'm surprised rosario's character wasn't more p-noid. she got pissed at him, and then next day it was all over.

rosario, did a great job. one of my favorite roles by her. it was nice to see her do a role w/ some meat in it. she held it down quite well. i dunno if it garners an oscar nod as everyone is saying, but i will say that if jolie gets a nod for 'changeling' then dawson deserves one for this.

there were some tender moments in the film, but when will's character was so heartbroken and distraught, i found it difficult at times to really give a shit. i think the writing is banking on you having an emotional chord because it's will smith and not a character that was written for the movie (i.e. would this script work is terrence howard played lead role and people weren't that familiar with him).

it was an OK movie. by the end i'm pretty damn near like "hurry up and do it already! let's stop the mellow dramatic agony!"

there were alot of holes that i wished were filled including more about the wife to have some type of connection other than "it's his wife and she died cuz he was reading the black berry."

anyways, okay film but don't think i would watch it again.

i thought it was a very good movie and one that you really have to pay close attention too to exactly get it. because by the end some things made more sense upon second viewing. i.e. the meeting at the nursing home. him calling out the 7 names of the people involved in the accident at the beginning. the phone conversation with his brother.

one of the things that bothered me though was that understanding that he was apparently overcome with grief because of the accident and loosing his wife why did he feel he had to die. that just seemed very extreme and he could atone for what happened another way. he seemed to be well off so maybe set up a foundation or a trust or donate just enough.

with regard to his wife, apparently while still grieving and not forgetting her he did at least get with emily and fall in love with her. it probably would have been better if it ended with the what if scenario's playing out. happy ending yes but still better than dying. i guess they wanted to play the whole dying to save the woman you love.

and the whole ezra thing just kind of seemed out of place and out of sequence and popping in out of nowhere. and was the ending supposed to allude to the two of the them meeting and perhaps being together because of this shared experience?

overall it was a good movie but kind of a downer.

>the makeshift-martyr aspect of the movie really bothered me.

artistic integrity/irony

its impossible to rationalize with irrational people. havin' to come to grips with the fact that his own arrogance took the life of his wife and 6 other people was too much for him. throughout the film, you get the sense that his guilt driven by the fact that although the accident was his fault, he was the only survivor. once a person truly decides to commit suicide, the only questions that remain relevant are: when, where, and how. once he decided that he no longer wanted to live with his grief, he decided to commit sucide in such a manner that would allow his actions to help save the lives of others. in this case, he found the instrument of choice in the very same thing he marveled at as a child.

>the story with him using his brother's i.d. etc.

his brother worked for the irs, and tim (ben's real name) stole his credentials (and hacked into their system), usin' them to find the 7 people he would eventually go on to help.

> i wish that
>was more clear and also his friend (barry pepper). if your
>friend told you "hey i want you to help me out after i kill
>myself" you wouldn't try to find a shrink for him etc? that
>just seemed pretty fucking awkward to me.

again, once someone decides that they truly no longer want to live, there's really not much you can do about it. *this is where the movie ask you to be a bit lenient: imagine your best friend in this EXACT same scenario. he comes to you in confidence and explains that he know longer wants to live with his grief and is determined to help the lives of seven strangers as his dyin' wish. as much as you want to help this friend, he's already informed you that ANYTHING you might do to prevent/persuade/stop him will only delay the inevitable.

>it felt like i was watching 'i-robot' with the car
>accident/someone died and he feels guilty aspect to it. and
>last but not least, will wasn't charming (he was at times) but
>came off as a very weird semi-stalkerish character. i'm
>surprised rosario's character wasn't more p-noid. she got
>pissed at him, and then next day it was all over.

anger. its very common for people riddled with guilt to display emotional outrage and imbalance. in this case, ben(tim) was emotionally awkward, semi-unavailable when it came to anything beyond his own logic and reasoning. while he could appear to find pieces of himself for short periods of time, the overall weight of his grief was all too consumin' for him. eventually, when he possibly found somethin' to live for (emily), he was again faced with the terrible decision of havin' to choose (which is why he made the final appeal to the heart surgeon)...

I was impressed as usual with Will's acting, I figured out pretty much exactly what was going on about 40 minutes in, and enjoyed the ride to that point. Rosario Dawson was pretty impressive. I dunno, I can't really understand why it's been panned across the board by critics, I actually thought this was an almost great movie and probabaly my favourite Will Smith joint in a few years (and I really liked I Am Legend).

It's depressing as hell, but that didn't really bother me but I can see how if you go in expecting a feel-good Will Smith vehichle you would be disappointed.

excellent movie.

this is the movie that Pursuit of Happiness pretended to be. that defining movie.

by far, Will Smith's greatest acting job in a movie. he should be nominated for an oscar in this one. fine job by will. One of the first times i've seen Will *act* in a movie, not just be servicieable and get by with overachievement and impeccable work ethic. You really get into the depths of an individual character, show its contraditions, joys, and sorrows, etc....man Will carried this movie like only an A-list heavyweight actor should.

not to mention, Rosario Dawson held her own too. man, she lost me for a while. she had me after he got game, and somehow she lost me as time as gone on. but i'm back in the Rosario fan-club. she truly radiated across the screen, rocking some ole plain clothes, etc. And she definitely held her own on the acting tip and was the perfect partner for will in this movie.

Woody held it down, my n*gga michael ealy held it down, the older latina chick held it down.

simply a good movie.

you got to pay close attention to this sh*t, though. stay awake. i doezed in and out on the first watching. 2nd time around, it all became clear.

great movie.

one of the best ones this year.

Will Smith's finest acting job.

To add on on my take. I think this was one of his best performances. I can see why many people might not feel the movie because it comes off too depressing for a Will Smith movie. I think we're so use to Will Smith in Action/Comedy roles, that we tend to forget he's actually a good actor, not the best but he's one of few that always pick the good roles. This is no exception. I just feel this movie deserves more credit. The story was somewhat unquie that it didn't come off as corny, well that's what I think. I guess you either love or hate the movie, but you can't denie it's impressive performances my talented actors and actress. I also think this was far better that POH.

I liked that there were no Will Smithisms.
The romance between Will and Rosario didn't make too much sense to me.
But the movie was okay.

i just saw this last night.... i don't think he was able to do it easily after falling in love, but the reality was, if he hadn't done it she was still, most likely going to die in a few weeks. It was about him loving her so much that he wanted to give her that chance at life and love... even if it was with out him.

Also, besides just wanted to give people what they 'deserved' he wanted to give himself what he felt he deserved, which was pain because of the pain he caused to those people. Which is why he donated the bone marrow with out any anasthesia and partly why he choose the jelly fish as his method of suicide as opposed to say, taking a bunch of pills, or slitting his wrists.

Over all i really liked the movie. True the beginning was kinda slow, yet I still was intrigued. my husband fell asleep right after Will's charachter went to the Latina woman's house and then he woke up when he was running to the hospital in the rain, and he concluded that he didn't like it. i couldn't really debate with him since he didn't watch in it's entirety and missed "the meat of the movie."

When i watched a second time it was much clearer.

The part about not bathing her as punishment? What nursing home/rehabilitation center/hospital would allow those kind've practices? Lawsuits galore.

Each of those other scenarios/situations were so improbable as well.

Hollywood/ the Oscars may want to 1 up Antoine Fisher or something.

seems like a lot of people aren't giving will much praise, but i think he played the role really well. rosario did her thing too. i wish barry was used more though.

look on his face and a bad haircut.

The overall plot was highly implausible so they try to MAKE you believe it by showing all these shots of Will looking like he needs a big bottle of Pepto Bismol and that made the whole movie really drag.

The whole "love story" angle was forced and unbelievable as well. Rosario Dawson's overall acting performance was good, Will's character wasn't believeable at all.

i thought it was garbagio.

i didnt like will's character at all. other than the scene where he slams dude into the glass at the nursing home, i didnt care for him.

it didnt help that i guessed the plot after seeing the trailer once, because it's almost exactly like an episode of Law & Order (which im a big fan of haha), so the whole "what's gonna happen" thing didnt get me.

i thought outside of smith (who didnt do a bad job, just that his character was lame) everyone did a good job in their roles.

i do think its fucked up what he did to her during the "what if" game...why would he give her hope like that if he KNEW what he was gonna do & that it wouldnt be possible.

that's pretty jacked.

not life changing
but i like this direction for will
and rosario for that matter
loved that barry pepper was in it

um i got one hint from someone
who i wanted to kill
cause it snapped the story line for me

but eh i would have figured it out anyways

i'm not understanding why anyone would thing this a confusing storyline
unless you were not paying attention during the movie
there were lots of clues

The love story between Will and Rosario reminded me of a less cheesy version of this music video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCagxbcpjYE

I wouldn't be surprised if this was somehow an inspiration for the story actually. It was the first thing I thought of once I figured out Will was gonna be the donor.

it's that Korean Music Video, I think it's called KISS. I exactly thought of that right after I watched it.

I have not been this disgusted with a film since The Green Mile.
I did not like this shit at all.

I am not really sure what this film is really trying to say. It is suppoeded to be about the cycle of life, death, and rebirth.

There are a few subliminals in this film. The film opens with a 911 call about a suicide. How strange?
Also felt there was a subliminal message about the IRS having complete control over one's life.

This film is not deep at all. All it is saying is there are only 2 things in life death and taxes.

Explain, you can inbox me.

I got nothing against scientology but i don't see the connection. This film has a new age message, that i will admit. I don't wan't to watch it again because it is really so boring. I am sure there is commentary on religious and occult research websites explaining the true meaning of the film. In my opinion it is clearly a propaganda piece. Read my previous post. It does promote the idea that suicide can be of some noble purpose. That is untrue. The film is garbage.

When the old lady in the nursing home is crying her eyes out, Will's lookin at her like she's telling a long ass joke & he wants her to wrap that shit up B!

Then they got this nagga walkin in the rain lookin like he bout to shart his pants if he can't find a bathroom STAT!

He almost makes up for it with that jellyfish at the end tho. That shit looked painful as fuck.

I'm glad I waited for this to come on cable. It had its moments but they were few & far between. Interesting concept but terrible execution. Even Barry Pepper caught Will's overacting bug in this one. But he only had about 3 scenes & wasn't given shit to do in any of em so I can't blame him. Dawson was decent enough to get me thru it tho.
