The problem, Kevin, is that your movie didn't provide laughs. The concept of a comedy not having deeper meaning is fine, as long as it's funny.

Smith slams critics over bad reviews

Director Kevin Smith has unleashed a furious rant at critics after his new film Cop Out received a flurry of negative reviews - insisting he'd rather see members of the public give their opinion instead of "nasty" movie experts.

The comedy, starring Bruce Willis as a New York police officer, was released in the U.S. last month and has been slated by reviewers, with many claiming the movie is let down by a weak script, lacklustre jokes and a contrived plot.

Smith is fuming about the unflattering comments, insisting he feels like his film has been "bullied" - and has vowed to force critics to pay to review his movies from now on.

In a series of posts on his Twitter.com page, he writes, "I gotta say that every day I hate film theory & film students & critics more & more. Film fandom's become a nasty bloodsport where cartoonishly rooting for failure gets the hit count up. Watching them beat the s**t out of it was sad. Like, it's called Cop Out; that sound like a very ambitious title to you? You REALLY wanna s**t in the mouth of a flick that so OBVIOUSLY strived for nothing more than laughs. Was it called Schindler's Cop Out?

"Writing a nasty review for Cop Out is akin to bullying a retarded kid. All you've done is make fun of something that wasn't doing you any harm and wanted only to give some cats some fun laughs."

And the experience has convinced Smith the system is "backwards" - he'd prefer to turn the job of reviewing movies over to members of the public.

He adds, "Realised whole system's upside down: so we let a bunch of people see it for free & they s**t all over it? Meanwhile, people who'd REALLY like to see the flick for free are made to pay? Bulls**t: from now on, any flick I'm ever involved with, I conduct critics screenings thusly: you wanna see it early to review it? Fine: pay like you would if you saw it next week. Why am I giving an arbitrary 500 people power over what I do at all, let alone for free? Next flick, I'd rather pick 500 randoms from Twitter & let THEM see it for free in advance, then post THEIR opinions, good AND bad. Same difference. Why's their opinion more valid? It's a backwards system."

Seems like it. If you have to apologize and/or categorize your shitty movies every time one comes out you might want to consider the fact that you are making shitty movies.

He got my $14.00 and I loved the soundtrack - and the final action sequence was shot very well - but the film was flat and just not funny in a lot of spots.

Honestly , if the film followed Hunsacker and Mangold it would have been *a lot* better.

And if Sean Williams Scott would not have become re-animated in the morgue the end of the film would have worked better too.

And have someone else edit the film next time - it gives you more feedback. I know now that interpostivies are a thing of the past and you get the complete digital files at the end of the day - just give it a little more breathing room before you edit. Hows about a co-editor??

And this: Don't wear a fucking bathrobe on an interview show (Jimmy Fallon) and then throw a shit fit when people say you look like a slob. Going on shows is a job - dress up to barbecue casual at least. (I'm not having a GO - it's honest criticism.)

but they're still probably awful (haven't seen them, hence probably) and shouldn't get good reviews (which they don't). but guess what? there's still an audience forthem, and they mostly make some cash, which is why they keep pumping them out like two or three times a year. i think kevin smith is less mad at the critics, and more mad cause he found his audience and now he keeps losing them with each additional film. critics giving bad reviews don't always keep people out of the seats. you released a crappy, unfunny trailer so there wasn't much hype for it and it didn't do as well as you hoped (as basa said, it actually did alright, not great, but alright. so this lashing out looks odd). oh well, you just gotta move on.

Im sure he will have something a little more in the realm of reality to say when he's able to take a look back; in his speaking specials it seems he always takes a honest acessment of his work.

He just needs to start making (non super hero) comic book heros.

He kinda flipped out after Mallrats tanked too, but a few years later he admitted it kinda deserved to. Still, if you know you're this emotional about things, maybe keep the lashing out private.

Seems to me that he just doesn't know how to market his bad movie.

Hot Tub Time Machine was a hit from a goofy title, a goofy premise, a couple stars and the promise of both titties and at least one gross out joke.

They practically sold all of that in the trailer.

It's like he thinks that critics should've been like, 'yeah it sucks but they are way suckier movies out there--and hey, it's all in the name of fun right? Three stars."

Seriously, what can he really hold against the critics, when he himself compared the film to a retarded kid?

The majority of reviews (including top tier guys like Ebert*) critiqued the movie as if Kevin wrote it. (Ebert: "Many of the gags possibly looked good on paper, but watching Willis and Morgan struggle with them is like watching third graders do Noel Coward, if Noel Coward had been rewritten by Kevin Smith.") So, I do think the flick did get some unfair press at the end of the day. Or I should say, misdirected criticism.

That being said, his rant/stance comes across so detached from reality. Not in that article, but further along that day he was Tweeting all of this, he eventually got to the point where he was like "No one who hasn't made a movie is allowed to say a movie is bad" and "There are no bad movie. A movie you think sucks might be somebody else's favorite."** It would be one thing if he was like "Man, it sucks that this film was unfairly targeted as something I wrote." But it's another saying that "no one should be critical of film, ever."

I say it's worse to direct a bad script than to write one.

If you're directing a bad script, you can rewrite it, either yourself or bringing other writers in. You can shoot stuff, see what works and what doesn't, and change it. Hell you can scrap whole scenes and have the actors improvise the dialogue.

If you're just writing the script, you have to just imagine how it's all going to look and sound on screen.

I think it's a cop out (pun intended) if he thinks he can just say hey it wasn't my script and let it ride on that. If anything the writer can say they fucked up his script, and it's a far more credible statement.

I'm saying people shouldn't have poorly reported in their articles (as Ebert did) that he wrote it. Not that since he didn't write it, he should be "above the law" of bad reviews. Just that, if you're gonna shit on a dude... shit on him accurately.

It has the trademark pop culture references and gross out humor, combined with an overabundance of dialogue paired with very little action or plot. He never claimed in the review that it WAS written by Smith-- just that it sounded like it was written by Smith. Which it does.

i find it hard to believe that he was handed a script and just shot what was on the page...its pretty common for a director to make revisions to a script to fit his/her style. kevin smith being an avid writer, i'd be surprised if he didnt make changes. these aren't always credited contributions...in fact, they often arent credited at all...but the screenwriter is almost never the only person who writes the script.

I've had to go back and watch his earlier films after watching any of his new stuff to double check I wasn't retarded or not well advanced in film when I watched his early stuff. They hold up but his career definitely won't. It's funny b/c guaranteed if his up and coming self saw his current films he'd rip them to shit as well. I guess that's what happened when you concentrate on making money rather than making good films.
