"Paranormal Activity. Wow."

http://www.paranormalactivity-movie.com/

I'ma go on head and be a total Paramount promo whore.

Yeah, I just got back from seeing this. Don't know when it's coming to your area, but when it does, I say check it out, and take a date with you, because you're going to have fun.

I don't know if y'all have heard of this flick, it's a new Blair Witch set in a house... a boyfriend and girlfriend set up a camera to record what has been an ongoing series of paranormal happenings... and that's all the setup I'ma give it...

There were quite a few nitpicks I had with the movie (particularly with the character Micah, who's the boyfriend), but the scares are undeniable and completely satisfying, and they escalate to a very cool final shot that's done in one take...

I happened to like The Blair Witch Project when it came out, but I'd say if you hated the payoff there, you won't be disappointed with the payoff here... at least I don't think so...

Good, scary fun.

Loved the flick. My only comment would be to watch it in a smaller, more intimate theater. There were some scenes that definitely worked in the communal setting, but for the most part the crowd killed some of it for me. Folks need too much attention during midnight movies.

Lol...as I type this while sitting in the dark, I'm hearing hella random ass noises in my apartment.

like you, I was ACUTELY aware of every noise in the crib... that's NEVER happened to me before...

I disagree with you about seeing it in a small-ish theater, as I think the larger the audience, the better the film plays... I think the film's writer-director even acknowledged that it's a tough sell on TV -- even though Steven Spielberg reportedly got so freaked out by the DVD screener he watched that the next day he returned it to the office wrapped in a garbage bag...

Word is that he also "helped suggest" the conclusion that we saw... THAT's why I consider myself a fan of his, yo, that dude knows how to get a reaction from an audience, lol...

In my mini review I forgot to mention how I liked (SPOILER) how the movie was presented without any credits, or Paramount/Dreamworks logos... I *did* have a problem with the opening title card, however... it (temporarily) threw me out of the movie... but otherwise, yeah, this was good stuff...

Did they leave you in darkness/silence for a minute after the film ended? They did that in the SF one and I hella thought it worked well. Hitchcock used to require theaters to do that during every screening of Psycho to allow the audience to marinate on what they just saw.

I think a lot of it was just drunk folks talking during the whole movie that killed some suspense for me. Not the typical "No no no, don't go in there." But just hella dumb shit like "Oh is she gonna get naked now." You could hella tell when a scene was working when the audience got alllllll quiet though.

What problems did you have with Micah?

I just thought it took wayyyy too long for him to be legitimately concerned about what was happening. Too often (and some might argue that it was too repetitive), he responded to Katie's concerns with a glib joke or macho posturing... which I believe may be a part of the larger point, but still, it was annoying, and not in the way I think the writer-director intended it to be...

Yeah I agree. A lot of the shit that happened early on (ie the sleepwalking) dude was way too laxed about. But I guess I understand that if you're the boyfriend, you kinda have to put up that macho front. (Also, it didn't really help that dude wasn't that great of an actor.)

I think it would've been effective if he had a friend in on it. Wouldn't the first thing you'd do if that shit was happening be to tell one of your boys? I understand keeping it focused on the relationship between Katie and Micah, but I think adding one of his boys to the film could've added a bit more depth to his character. Maybe putting up that front with Katie, but freaking out when he's with his boys.

Yep, and it wouldn't have had to be a long scene, just a minute or so of him chatting with his boy at work, or at a bar or something, saying he's trying to keep up this brave front, with his boy telling him to continue doing what he's doing... and that would have helped me when he pulled out the Ouija board despite her constant pleas not to do so

I know PTP hates to talk about subtext, but there's an interesting cautionary tale lurking in this movie about male significant others who refuse to listen to their girlfriends...

I liked the fact that they never actually played with the Quija board. He just pulled it out and brought that "negative energy" from his girl. I didn't think about it during the movie, but now I would've loved a reaction shot of him reviewing the Quija board footage. If I got the timeline down right, I think that's first sign that should've been like "WTF is going on" for him.

Lol, most definitely. After everyone going on Cloverfield on here, there were parts during the film where I was actually thinking "Damn...PTP is gonna hate this flick."

9. "Chitown Screening and Thoughts..."
In response to Reply # 3

I peeped it at the Chitown midnight screening last night.

To me, it crept way too slow in the first half and was pretty boring. Then when things got going it felt underwhelming. To me...they could have done a lot more with it and there was no extra budget needed to enhance it. Also, there was not much background info as to exactly what it was, why, etc.

Then the acting was subpar...especially the girlfriend and the psychic. And a lot of the couple's actions made no damn sense (why stay in the house, why keep sleeping in the damn bad after like the 15th day of all that craziness...why?)

Also, the crowd pissed me off! Talked, giggled, and screamed the whole damn time...even when nothing was happening...it ruined most of the scare effect.

Overall, it was a decent effort for the budget and all, but it could have been great. And it was not worth the 2 hour wait in line just to get in the building.

SPOILERS, by the way

>Also, there was not much

What other "background info" did you need? It was a demon, and was acknowledged as such. All you needed to know was that it was a demon that was after Katie and had been for as long as she could remember...

>psychic. And a lot of the couple's actions made no damn sense

They stayed in the house because it was said that the demon would follow Katie no matter where she went. So, they could have gone to a hotel, a friend's house, downstairs, the basement, it wouldn't have mattered -- the demon was going to follow Katie. This was established during that "boring" early stuff that you didn't like.

I guessed I missed some things, but not much.

However, that does not take away from the boredom of the first half and the bad acting. Also, the two other characters that brought nothing to the film...the psychic and the female friend.

Also, I got frustrated by all the cuts to night scenes in the bedroom where nothing really happened at all...it happened at least 2 or 3 times. Also, I just felt that more could have happened in the house...like the demon speaking or yelling at them at night or just be more of a threat. It was just slamming doors and messing with bed sheets most of the time. I just did not find it scary until the last 15 minutes or so.

I'll peep it again if it hits the city, but I don't think it will change my thoughts any.

I think the effective thing was the subtlety of the demon, I was always tensing up when those night scenes happened. And as for the reason of why they stayed, its because no matter where she went the demon was going to follow them.

But I think we should stop talking about this movie in detail, because the less people know the better.

Man this shit had me scared! I had to go home and watch a mindless comedy just to wind down. Even still, I closed ALL the doors in my house before I went to bed! I COMPLETELY agree about the subtext in this film, I too found myself thinking, "Jeez this dude is an idiot."

The payoff was pretty awesome and completely un expected for me.

that was the scariest thing I've ever seen in a theater. WOW. I am not going to sleep tonight. I think the technical imperfections of this are outweighed by the actual thrill factor. It's easy to overlook bad acting when you're on the edge of your damn seat everytime they're asleep.

And I agree with the "see this in a large theater" crowd. I saw this at a 16plex in the burbs, probably around 80% capacity. Worth it for the sounds you hear your fellow patrons make in the last 15 minutes.

SPOILERS/questions

-So was she possessed by the demon when she was sleepwalking? Because when Micah was talking to her in the swing she responded in the same little girl-ish voice she was talking in when she convinced him to stay at the end.
-Why would the demon actually tell them about Diane? To help them? What kind of demon does such a thing?
-Why do you suppose Micah never saw the thing? She said that when she was younger, even though it only stood at the foot of Katie's bed, her sister could still see it. There were times when it was breathing on Katie in broad daylight.

I think the demon wasn't strong enough to fully possess her yet, but he had her for a bit.

Who was Diane, I just thought that Michah got it wrong.

He was clearly close-minded. Keep in mind SHE never saw it either (during the film) They saw children are more perceptive, maybe they were beyond the point of being ABLE to see it.

This seems reasonable.

The lady who Micah looked up on the internet that had been haunted by a demon exactly like Katie's. Micah got her name from the ouija board. Seemed like the demon was telling them exactly what was going to happen.

Good point, she could only feel it breathing on her towards the end.

Nope, its a common phenomenon that just happens when the brain doesn't tell the body thats its in a sleep state. People have been known to go down stairs and make something to eat or turn on the television all while they are sleep. Since she was a sleepwalker; between the hours of 2-4 the demon took control of her body during the 21st night of filming. She temporarily wasn't in control of what was happening but she probably could see what was going on...

>Because when Micah was talking to her in the swing she
>responded in the same little girl-ish voice she was talking in
>when she convinced him to stay at the end.
Not exactly, when she was on the swing she replied in a typical tone that someone who sleepwalks does. It wasn't odd that she stood at over the bed for two hours straight while she sleepwalking, its been known to happen before. She became possessed by the entity near the end of the film after she showed the bite marks. At that point her boyfriend should have tied her down and found a demonoligist somewhere to transfer the presence to a mirror or an animal...

>-Why would the demon actually tell them about Diane? To help
>them? What kind of demon does such a thing?
Either the spirit was Diane herself that was trying to warn them and at the end of her attempt of communicating with the living the demon lit the board on fire. The demon most likely was torturing Diane in the afterlife and the Ouija board pissed him off since Diane could warn them of what would happen...

>-Why do you suppose Micah never saw the thing? She said that
>when she was younger, even though it only stood at the foot of
>Katie's bed, her sister could still see it. There were times
>when it was breathing on Katie in broad daylight.

Some people have ESP and others don't. Since Katie and her sister shared blood maybe both could sense the phenomenom and actually see what it looks like. That demon that looked like a goat with wings and hoofed feet is the most powerful demon that one can encounter based on some of my studies. Things like video/pictures can pick up the infrared spectrum that can show a strong spiritual presence. When I was a kid we would see a little boy with a red hat mysteriously appear in some photos. If that presence meant us harm we would encounter disturbance much more violently like in the film. Drag Me To Hell featured the same demon which basically can act outside of the hours of 2am-4am and is known to leave physical markings on its victims...

65. "the movie was illustrating the stages of possession"
In response to Reply # 31

basically, the sounds and minor phenomenon are the first stage,
which is known as the infestation.
the infestation stage can be seen as the point at which the demon is hovering around the afflicted. this is evidenced by rapping and other sounds, electrical issues (flickering lights and such) and rank smells all observed when the afflicted is present.

the next stage is the obsession. the demon has gained strength and begins to more actively aggress the afflicted. as opposed to goings on *around* the afflicted, things begin to happen *to* the afflicted. it is at this point that the afflicted would begin to hear voices, suffer mysterious bruises, bites, as well as mental turmoil, anguish and deep depression. it is at this point also that the victim becomes to exhibit behaviour that will further the demon's hold such as heavy drinking, drug use and conflict with/isolation from loved ones. it is also during this stage that the sleepwalking episodes and brief breaks in character will take place.

finally, the demon has built enough powere and sucked enough energy from the afflicted adn those around the afflicted to launch a full on takeover. this stage obviously, is known as the possession.

I thought I was sick and tired of these kinds of 'lost footage' films, but this one was very, very enjoyable.

The last scene in the movie...Zootown was right, if you were pissed off with the ending of Blair Witch and Cloverfield, I think you will be satisfied here.

And for those few of you that saw it...I just read that there were two at least two other alternate endings. One of them definitely sounds almost better than what they actually went with. They're probably going to put it on the DVD.

Seriously, if this plays by you, you must see this. Drag Me to Hell was fun, Zombieland was fun, but this is easily the best bonafide horror movie to come out this year.

Same setup as the last scene, only instead of dude getting thrown into the camera, the girl comes back into the room alone, with a bloody knife (it's implied that she killed Micah). She stares at the camera coldly, then calmly slits her own throat and dies.

The second is the same setup, but she comes and sits on the bed with the knife. Then her friend shows up, and she kills her friend, then sits back on the bed. Days and days pass. The cops show up, and I guess there's a shootout or something. I think it's implied that she's caught, or is shot.

The second one...man. If they had the guts to go with that one. That almost would have been way more brutal than what they did.

The ending that currently plays works because it fits the cheap thrills tone of the movie. Not only that, it's like the punch line to the running "joke" of the movie, as it were: this is what happens when you act like a macho arse and don't listen to your girl when she says she's been followed by a demon all of her life that's not to be fucked with...

Yeah. Plus it's a nice final jolt to send everyone home with... the other endings are a bit too... calculatingly "dark" and "nasty." I don't believe this movie isn't meant to be viewed in that kind of light. Antichrist, this is not.

LOL, very true. Personally, even if I had been curious like the guy all the way up until that last day...I think when she had *that* voice and was like "hey I think we should just stay here, and everything will be fine." that would probably be the time when I told her "Hey I'll be right back, I gotta get a few things at the store..." and got the hell on out of there.

True. But the second one...I can say that it still would have left a lasting impression on me, to say the least. But I'm 100% satisfied with the route they took.

For all that buildup, I think we needed some kind of supernatural payoff, instead of weird noises and powdered footprints.

Not to mention that there's a gradual build up to that last shot... which, I can already tell, will be met with cries of "it was boring and not scary enough and took too long to get to the good stuff"...

I was disappointed, but it was WAY more effective than "Blair Witch Project"

Likes:
Katie's Tig Ol' Bitties. I was like gotdamn everytime babygirl was wearing that black tank top. I wanted the demonic entity to plop one of those bad boys out but it never happened...

*spoilers
When the Ouija Board moves and then ignites aflame was tight. I think they used magnets to make that effect happen.

When Katie's leg gets dragged out the bed and then drug across the the halway floor. I wonder if she improvised most of it until her body was dragged in the darkness of the halway or if they used "invisible" wire that common in special effects if the light hits the object a certain way.

In the realm of demonology the hours between 2-4 a.m. is showtime. Its believed that the spirit world syncs with ours between these hours allowing things to interact with us. If you have nightmares, sleep paralysis, REM or paranoia its most likely between these hours of the morning. They did there homework in adding this fact in the film..

The psychic gets the hell out of dodge the second go around, common sense would tell you to follow him out immediately...

Dislikes:

The hype surrounding this film, it has its moments, but its NOT scary, its at most disturbing but everyone was laughing in the theater and people keep asking "why don't you turn the lights on?!!"

Mikah or Micah the boyfriend was a serious ass. Dude enabled the dark force to manifest itself by angering it with that damn camera, taunts, arguments and the ouija board...

*spoiler

Her demon face was a big grin and crazy eyes, funny as hell...

I think this film is good for those who know nothing about whats going to happen, however blogs ruined the scare factor for me...

>how did the burned picture manifest in the attic?

somehow the demon was showing Katie that it was saving that burnt photo of her for years and finally placed it in the corner of the attic. It doesn't make sense at all, my theory is that since Katie sleepwalks she could have been operating under a unconscious spell for many years prior to the events of the film and that in her sleep state set her old house on fire and kept the photo of her secretly hidden away for years. Again, any explaination that will be made available just defies logic since demons/spiritual entities cannot create nor hold on to solidified objects for many years on in...

In response to Reply # 0

But it was still scary enough that I was slightly relieved when it went the more conventional route that made it easier to dismiss, like "Oh good, I will be sleeping tonight."

It was the little details I loved the most

SPOILERS

Loved the time elapse of her standing there. Her slowly getting pulled off the bed. The attic entrance slightly ajar. Like the way they depicted the footprints. Liked the psychics reaction on his second visit.

Didn't like most of the ouija board stuff. Thought it lighting on fire was especially cheesy, along with the 'clue'. Funny, when that scene came on I threatened my wife that I was going to say very loudly in the silent theater "Magnets" in a self-satisfied tone to embarrass her. That might have been the scariest part of the movie for her.

I liked the ending alright. That scream was something else. Not a big fan of excessive screaming in horror movies, but that one did the trick. Even liked the guy getting pitched and her crawling up to him. Just didn't like her smile (didn't like when they did it before either or her lunging at the camera.) Didn't feel like she pulled off the creepy smile very well.

They took the most effective things from these type of movies and executed them well.

I can say I'm glad I didn't know much about the film going in. I saw it on a whim and was very pleasantly surprised.

The ONLY thing that sucked was Micah's over the top acting on occasion. And he seemed to not carry his fear like a normal person would. I love my wife but if this started to happen to her, I'd get far-far away lol.

I liked how they killed the "just leave the house" contingent with the explanation that it follows the girl so it's not just the house.

As far as horror/thriller goes, it's in my tops right now. Though I will say that this is a situational movie. You HAVE to watch this late at night with no lights on, with the surround sound on or in a theatre with a decent crowd. It's not a daytime film at all.

It grossed a lil over 7 mil this weekend...and it costs $15K to make...talk about a fucking profit...$44K per theatre!

But it's pretty illogical.

I mean, why would they bother closing the door? It's a demon...not like the unstoppable spirit of pure evil is going to be like "oh shit, they got the door closed...I guess that must mean they don't want me to walk in...my bad..."

Although it would've kind been funny if the whole time it was just some homeless guy squatting in the living room. And when they caught him he was like, "Sorry I set y'alls board game on fire..."

and i'm not even in to horror/suspense flicks like that. the build up was magnificent and i thought it was waaaaay better than 'blair witch project'. pretty much everyone in the audience was sitting there in amazement and awe after the final scene.

*SPOILER* and i'm still LMAO at the 'psychic' basically saying 'f*ck that, i can't help you.'

I enjoyed the movie. I felt it was more tense than scary, which is fine by me. I loved it...

...until I went to bed that night.

I freaked the fuck out over any noise. My goddamn cat, who normally stays sleeping on the bed the whole night, decided this would be the night he runs all around the house.

And me and my girl both woke up right before 3AM, ya know... the witching hour... and were paranoid as all hell. I had the worst sleep that night.

Go Wings.

More than anything, the acting took me out of the movie. I appreciated the slow build, but at some point it started to seem like the demon was fucking with them and it became a lot more comical than it should've been. The dragging scene did give me legitimate goosebumps, and from there I assumed the thing was going to ramp up toward a satisfying finale. But some people have pointed out, the otherwise unrevealing trailer totally ruined the final scene for me -- I was waiting for Micah's body to come flying back at the camera, so it didn't make me jump (although Katie's scream WAS exceptional).

But personally, everything decent about the ending was destroyed by Katie's cheeseball smile and lunge at the camera. It obliterated the relative "realism" of the film up to that point. I, for one, am one of the people who loved the ambiguity of the "Blair Witch" ending (even though it wasn't very ambiguous if you paid attention to the beginning of that movie), so for me it would've been much more effective if the last thing we saw was Micah flying at the camera followed by the note that Katie was never found.

... somebody mentions how she would make one child stand facing a corner as she killed the other one. The last thing the guy with the camera captures before he gets whacked from behind is his friend standing in a corner. I don't think a lot of people remembered that bit of information from the beginning when they first saw the film, so people shitted on the ending. When I saw it as a kid, it freaked me out but it didn't dawn on me until a few hours later.

Blair Witch is a classic because the dialogue is brilliant. The slow breakdown in the relationships is real...and the enevitable surrender to empathy and self-pity is well portrayed.

I just watched 'paranormal activity'. This shit is a blatant rip-off. In both films, the motivation of the characters to continue filming under duress is justified within the characters themselves. "Paranormal" mistakes this technique for a movie in itself. It spends most of it's time justifying it's own content. Not much beneath this surface if you ask me.

It's in no ways scary as the advertisements perceive it to be. Homegirl Katie has these melons sitting tight in a black tank top that completely distracted me from the film's eery setting. After viewing the film I had no problem sleeping and I can't say it was as scary as it was disturbing.

... I was prepared to love it, because I generally tend to enjoy the "found footage" gimmick ("Blair Witch Project," "Cloverfield," "REC") but I legitimately couldn't get into it as much as I may have wanted to. I definitely didn't DISLIKE it, but it didn't live up to the "one of the scariest movies of the decade" hype. (And, as I said earlier, the trailer is responsible for ruining what would've probably been the biggest "jump" moment for me. It certainly got some of the girls in my group.)

I hadn't seen the trailer for this movie. In general, I try to avoid trailers whenever possible unless I think it's a movie that wouldn't be ruined by a trailer revealing too much.

But after praising the movie to a friend, a few days later she said she was even more interested in the film after seeing the trailer. When she described the trailer I was shocked. That little bit they give away, one look from one character, practically ruins the whole movie.

I even want to say I wouldn't have liked the movie half as much if I'd gone into it having seen the trailer. Part of the beauty of the film is the building mystery, and not knowing at all just how creepy it's going to get, and how the 'evil' is going to show itself. Any prior insight, and the first hour or so of the movie will probably bore you.

I'm glad I knew absolutely nothing about it, had seen no trailer, and did not have people everywhere saying that it was the scariest movie we've had in years.

All I heard was, it's some scary, low budget film, and since it's called Paranormal Activity--maybe it's about ghosts?

But I think now it's destined to get the same backlash as Blair Witch.

I swear if dude was like OMG I believe, the movie would suck cause he would have left or something like bitch you on your own.

the comic relief in this was great. I laughed a lot.
I did wake up hearing shit like oh noes! but i always did that.

In response to Reply # 0

http://movies.yahoo.com/news/movies.ap.org/39paranormal-activity39-slays-39saw39-with-22-million-ap

LOS ANGELES - "Paranormal Activity" has won a weekend battle of fright films over part six of the "Saw" franchise. The upstart chiller "Paranormal Activity" went into nationwide release and took over the No. 1 spot with $22 million. That compares to just $14.8 million for the debut of "Saw VI," a franchise that has been an annual Halloween fixture since 2004.

It was the worst opening ever for Lionsgate's "Saw" series, whose previous low was $18.3 million for the original movie. Subsequent installments of the "Saw" franchise all opened at $30 million or better.

This time, horror fans simply gravitated toward "Paranormal Activity" instead of "Saw VI."

"`Paranormal' ate their lunch," said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com. "There's no other way to explain it."

After four weeks in narrower release, distributor Paramount slotted "Paranormal Activity" into 1,945 theaters. That still was just under two-thirds of the 3,036 theater count for "Saw VI."

"Paranormal Activity" raised its total haul to $62.5 million. The low-budget movie was shot for a reported $15,000 but has become a horror sensation because of online fan buzz.

The previous weekend's No. 1 movie, the Warner Bros. tale "Where the Wild Things Are," fell to No. 3, just behind "Saw VI" with $14.4 million. Spike Jonze's adaptation of the beloved children's book by Maurice Sendak raised its total to $54 million.

Among other wide releases, Summit Entertainment's "Astro Boy" opened at No. 6 with $7 million, Universal's "Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant" debuted at No. 8 with $6.3 million and Fox Searchlight's "Amelia" premiered at No. 11 with $4 million.

latimes.com:

>A spine-tingling ending for 'Paranormal Activity'

The young stars are unfazed -- but thrilled -- by the frenzy over their micro film.

By Yvonne Villarreal

October 26, 2009

Just a few weeks ago, Katie Featherston was balancing plates brimming with spaghetti and baked ravioli, working as a waitress at Buca di Beppo at Universal CityWalk. Micah Sloat was a struggling actor/computer programmer living in North Hollywood. Now, they're watching the micro-budget horror movie they filmed three years ago develop into a full-blown phenomenon.

The two play the young couple haunted by a spectral force in the breakout hit "Paranormal Activity." The suspenseful supernatural thriller, reminiscent of "The Blair Witch Project," has become one of the year's biggest success stories. Made for just $15,000, "Paranormal" was the No. 1 movie at the box office this weekend, taking in about $22 million, and has earned an astounding $62.5 million since its initial limited release in late September.

Featherston and Sloat? They're just as surprised as everyone else.

"When the movie opened, we hid behind a tree across the street from the ArcLight in Hollywood," Featherston, 27, said as she sat in a booth at Buca di Beppo, where she was frequently interrupted by former co-workers. "The line was huge. I couldn't believe it. It's something you hope for but never, ever expect will happen. I wanted to run over and say, 'Hey, I'm in that!' . . . but we couldn't."

In an attempt to keep the mystery surrounding the movie's story intact, the studio and the film's director, Oren Peli, an Israeli-born video game designer with no formal film training, kept the two actors relatively secluded -- they've only recently started to do interviews with press. The tactic seems to have worked. After the movie's nationwide release, the startling ending to the film provoked a spike in Internet searches by people apparently determined to learn if the facts as presented were true.

It's all been a big leap for Sloat. The 28-year-old, who grew up in Westport, Conn., and moved to L.A. in 2005 to pursue acting, was on the verge of ditching the unstable career and giving up on his dream.

Featherston, a Texas native, graduated from Southern Methodist University and also moved to Los Angeles in 2005.

When the two auditioned for the spookfest in 2006, they weren't expecting to be part of a box-office record breaker. There wasn't even a script.

"I remember being in the waiting room and these girls would just kind of walk out shaking their head," Featherston said. "I walked into the room and (Peli) said, 'Why do you think your house is haunted?' Just like that. Boom! So I just threw myself into the character."

And that's exactly what Peli was searching for in casting the characters who would later be called Katie and Micah (yes, he used their actual names).

"The whole point is for it to feel natural," Peli said in a recent phone interview. "I didn't want actors who looked like they were acting. I wanted it to feel real, so I didn't want there to be a script. I wanted the audience to think they were watching real life. If you're looking at the footage of their audition and see the way they interact -- if you didn't know any better -- you'd think you were looking at real documentary footage of a couple."

It's true. In person, they often finish each other's sentences. They playfully tease one another. Compliments are exchanged. But despite the good-natured flirtations, they insist they're not a couple, although Sloat is quick to point out that Featherston asked him for his number back when they auditioned together.

"I was not trying to hit on him," Featherston interjects. "I was new in town and we had so much fun together. Why wouldn't I want us to be friends and hang out? And I thought if we got the part, it would be nice if we got along because it was going to be intense."

Filming took place in 2006 at Peli's San Diego home over a span of seven days -- a problem for Sloat, who was enrolled in music school at the time (he even wrote original music that's included in the film). The actors, who were each paid $500 for their roles, often put in 14- to 18-hour days. The little sleep they managed to squeeze in took place in the "haunted" house. Featherston slept in the infamous bed seen in all the promotional screen shots of the film, while Sloat dozed off in one of the guest rooms.

"We hardly saw the outside world," Featherston joked. "We just filmed all the time. I couldn't even tell you what San Diego is like. But the exhaustion helped make our characters more believable -- I think."

Believable acting aside, Sloat said, it's the universal primal fear that makes this thriller so spine-tingling.

"Being scared at night is something we can all relate to," Sloat said. "As children, we all had those fears. Everyone knows what it's like to be scared of what's lurking behind the closet. I think as we age, those kind of unconscious fears recede into the background, but they're still there. And when they reappear in your home -- in your room -- it's not something that you can just ignore. I think that's why it's done so well."

In 2007, the movie screened at the Screamfest Horror Film Festival (where Featherston received the best actress award). That helped Peli find an agent at CAA and eventually led to a subsequent screening at the Slamdance Film Festival in Utah. Now, it's playing in theaters nationwide to sold-out crowds.

Sloat and Featherston -- who look much like they did three years ago (although on this day Featherston is a bit more glam with the help of an on-site makeup artist) -- don't seem fazed by the frenzy. They don't mind it either.

Featherston quit waitressing. Sloat hinted he's leaving the tech industry. "Auditions are coming at us like bullets," Sloat said. "It's better than winning all the lotteries at once."

Featherston, whose next acting credit is a bit part in the horror indie "Walking Distance," has a different measure of success. "My old crush was like, 'Hey, Katie. How's it going?' " she said coyly. "I was like, 'Uh-uh. You didn't like me then.' It's sweet revenge."

It didn't mention that they're still making money off of it. It only mentions the $500 they earned initially.

I'd be pissed as fuck if a movie took in 65 million and all I got was $500.

Go Wings.

More than likely they did not get any other payment.

For a small movie that could've very well remained unknown, I doubt if they worked anything out in any contract to say "My payment is $500 but if this makes a bijillion dollars I get a bigger cut."

BUT

Think of the exposure they got because of a tiny little movie they probably thought would at most maybe get to Sundance.

Chances are, the next movie they do will come with a 20x pay increase.

So they probably have nothing to be mad about.

this shit isn't even in the same ballpark as Blair Witch, infact seeing this shit only made me wanna see Blair Witch again. there was no fuckin suspense at all, the dude was the living embodiement of every stereotypical "white guy" douche bag in every horror move ever made... if there was something dumb to be done best believe he was gonna do it. the acting was fucking terrible. terrible pacing, nothing was scary NOTHING because the actors couldnt sell it.

and trust me, I was going in READY to like it, I wanted to be scared.... just didnt happen.

didn't know much about the movie going in.

i actually thought it was real life sh*t gone wrong on camera.

anyway, it was garbage.

i don't get this movie, its hype, or why its supposed to be "so scary".

i really don't.

reading the reviews by critics after i've saw the movie....man, there must be another version of this movie thats not in the theaters.

because the way the describe this, does not match whats on screen.

only good part about the entire movie was Katie's chest. thats the only thing that kept me...um...up...during the movie.

Of course I read all the terrible reviews here first.

So I didn't go into it expecting anything special.

But yeah, it doesn't at all deserve the hype it's been getting.
