Because a gang that that has a dude that wears an afro as a leader, wears all patent leather/army fatigue and practices kung-fu and destroys local pizza restaurants would be laughable in 2008...
plus all gangs nowadays choose to carry guns....

On The Lookout 4:
some new music. WTF is going on this year?

we are so uptight these days. it makes me sad that movies like this wouldn't get made today. ain't like it was condoning the shit. i dunno. i like movies that explore taboos. these days only "indy" films are allowed to do that. and everyone gets in a tizzy like they forgot movies like this were made way back in the day. i want modern day a Deer Hunter or a modern day Taxi Driver. ya know?

Let's not forget that in this decade the last few movies starring the Wayans Brothers have been 1,000x more offensive than Soul Man.

At the very least, in the last twenty minutes Soul Man tried to redeem itself for anything that might come across as offensive in the first 70 minutes...

The White Chicks makes no such apology.

Mainly because of the structure of the story

All of that setup-payoff-setup-payoff wouldn't work in 2008, as everyone's so media savvy and aware of how movies work that they wouldn't be surprised by what happens

The savvy audiences probably sees everything in National Treasure, Fantastic Four, Cheaper By the Dozen or even Shrek and The Incredibles coming from a mile away.

lol, in a roundabout way, yes.

I heard 'Tonight's The Night' by Rod Stewart walking out of a convenience store during lunchtime today......which reminded me of Private Lessons, which gave me a 'WTF?' thought that brought me back to Demi's comment on Letterman.

I actually haven't seen that movie since I was young enough to require one, who took me and my sister to see it in the theater.

She didn't look as good as Elizabeth Shue did then though.

In response to Reply # 18

It wouldn't solve *every* problem they encounter. But in 2008 pretty much every one of those kids, including the little girl, would have had a cellphone.

I suspect that would have made their evening less eventful. There are like four Seinfeld episodes that I always think the same thing about. The Chinese Restaurant one. The Parking Garage one. And a few more.

Cellphones prevent a lot of hilarious mishaps.

edit: Aaaaaand, I should have read the post directly below this one before my genius observation.

In response to Reply # 15

Both Josh Hartnett and the blonde lady were communicating via cell phones as the attacks began, weren't they?

She was out in the wilderness stuck and she called for a ride?

Plus, in the real Barstow or whatever it was called - they still have daily flights. Why do planes stop coming in? Planes land in darkness all the time.

And it's absurd that Eli Foster would find EVERY cell phone or communication device. Some old lady got one in a drawer somewhere.

I think Hartnett and his girl were on short-distance CB.

And I agree the idea that someone could somehow steal EVERY cellphone (in what had to have been one night so nobody noticed) is ridiculous but it didn't prevent them from doing it.

They also use the "no service" gimmick all the time as well.

All our hero had to do was spend $300.00 on a used '81 Cavalier and run them down like injured armadillos.

or was that just for 'Beat It'?

I'm guessing they didn't have wardrobe/choreography/content input?

in his life, even. It's the first one he can remember, that's for sure.

And well... it might have contributed to his filmophobia.

Richard Pryor sure was in a lot of CRAP filmwise.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

Clearly that kid was insane. And his parents were. Never. Home. His surrogate father was a video game induced hallucination.

In 2008 we still see stories like this, but not in movie theaters. More like Dateline and 20/20.

Because it's not like parents got better. A family in my hometown left their 13 year old daughter home alone while they went on vacation. Parents today are fucking ridiculous.

Or at the very least, you can make the kid be in a single parent home where the mom has to work or the family works two jobs.

Either the ones "about" games but not based off of a game like Cloak and Dagger or The Last Starfighter or the nerdy films like Weird Science, My Science Project, Real Genius, etc.

The hipster/slacker vibe is still ruling the teen filmss. (Although there was that one horror film about a game but that was terrible and didn't come close to using the game enough. A lot of wasted potential in that film).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't this movie introduce "Super Mario Bros. 3" to U.S. gamers? With the Internet, a company would probably have a MUCH tougher time keeping a game with that level of anticipation under wraps.

I'd be seriously surprised if anyone else heard of this. But it's an early '80s comedy where a brilliant doctor discovers a special powder, which, if he snorts, turns him into wild sex fiend/party animal for 12 hours.

It was recommended to me bya friend of mine when I was in 5th grade. I probably watched this movie over a dozen times. I don't know what the fuck my parents were thinking by letting me rent this shit.

There's no way they could make Lamar THAT flaming in today's time.

They couldn't make Booger that much of a foul-mouth pervert.

im sure you can find "au natural" chicks, i mean there is porn for that exact fetish

takashi could be done, for many of us our introduction to kal penn (kumar) was his "habib" type performance in van wilder, which wasnt that long ago and is really abuot the same type of character in many ways.

especially now with r comedy frenzy?hell i would love to see an apatow directed version. an updated version if done with the idea of being a high quality comedy movie the way apatow has (mostly) done would be excellent.

obviously those characters in the original cant be duplicated, the actors and the script just gelled perfectly and had the chemical balance to make it all work... i am just saying the same scenarios can be pulled off today.

now if we are talking something else, some shit like eddie murphys "faggot" jokes, well yeah, that probably wouldnt go down today without massive protsts and the like.

And see the post below about Louis nailing Betty while pretending to be Stan. Didn't Ronnie Fields get in trouble for doing something like that?
