I had my reservations before, but I feel a littler better about this movie now.

It might not totally suck.

Anthony Hopkins as Thor (honestly that was the first and worst sign).

Natalie Portman as the female lead.

A storyline that recalls Hercules in New York.

The only thing I saw missing was the comedic sidekick played by Chris Kattan or Jimmy Fallon.

I hope they're test screening this like crazy, with cast & crew on call for constant re-shooting. This might tank hard and make Marvel seriously reconsider The Avengers.

The worst was the "Stark" name-drop at the end--that little bit of "Hey kids if you thought the last 3-4 minutes looked crappy, well go see it anyway cause you might just get a few more cameos hint hint hint."

but yeah... it feels kinda like a filler movie to me; like it exists only to serve as a stepping stone to The Avengers.

But we shall see forsooth...

I would love for this to be the surprise hit of the year, and that all the reviews praise strong acting and a great story to accompany the big effects. But honestly, from the moment I read that they were even going to make a Thor movie I was like uh-oh.

Seriously, even an Ant-Man movie would better serve the franchise...

The naysayers have never read a Thor comic in their life.

If you have no idea on what Thor's origin is and your casting judgement on the movie based on that then I can't take you seriously.

collected every issue of the classic Simonson run

and I'm apathetic about this preview.

Not saying that it sucks or anything, but... *shrug*

That said, the whole "If you don't like this footage then you never read the comic" argument kinda sucks because the movie should be able to stand on its own.

I was probably reading Thor comics before some of these posters were born.

The trailer didn't impress me.

I think most of what works well for the comics will come off as helplessly corny in the movie.

Like I said somewhere above, it feels like the movie has no real backbone... Like the ONLY reason they are making this movie is just to set up The Avengers (I truly believe this is the case).

But aside from that, I am quite open to accepting the movie for what it is... But this preview didn't move me at all.

maybe the budget is too low to pull off the Asgardian realm with Ice Giants and other baddies to go against Thor but man this doesn't look too epic. Besides the little part that revealed the Destroyer this film doesn't have any wow moments that will be memorable...

I guess I liked the character development of Thor throughout the movie, and that the villain was sympathetic - the plot surrounding the Odin family was quite Shakespeare-esque to be honest, which was interesting. Expect some LOL moments when Thor arrives on Earth, which were welcome and didn't seem out of place. Would've liked there to be more action scenes though, I felt like the Warriors Three and Sif were wasted big time, but I'm not familiar with the comic books so not sure how big their roles were supposed to be.

Thought Hemsworth was great as Thor. Portman didn't get to do much but looked good and was quite funny. Ditto for Kat Dennings.

Loved the CGI for Asgard especially the bifrost bridge. The 3D was unnecessary like every movie that's not Avatar and Piranha 3D (I'm biased against 3D though).

the 3d was great in the beginning almost look like it was shot in 3d. then toward the middle and end seemed pointless.
maybe i just got too used to it.

anyway, spoiler question, what was in the shield box at the end?
everyone clapped, have no idea what it was.
and was that luke cage? cause someone also said that in the theater and they started clapping. they clapped at everything.

No that wasn't Luke. Thor had no powers at that point and would have been no challenge for Cage and definitely wouldn't have beaten him like he did that guy. That dude was just a random SHIELD agent.

I have NO complaints. This made me very anxious for the Avengers movie.

*spoiler alert*

I too, like someone mentioned above, wondered if that was Luke Cage he was fighting.
Great to get a first look at Hawkeye
The dude playing Thor did a perfect job.
Idris was great as well.
I think Odin's portrayal was scaled down alot, unfortunately.....I felt he should have been portrayed as more powerful than what was shown.

Shit is priceless. These cats are irate about a black man portraying the film version of a secondary character in a comic loosely based on some Scandinavian Fairy Tales. I'm fucking dying over here.

Also...what Luke Cage cameo? Someone fill me in...I don't mind spoilers.

but when thor goes and tries to go get his hammer from the newly built shield compound around the hammer. he goes through all the guards and then one big black guy gives him a run for his money.
besides being black and holding his own, no other reason you should think its cage. hawkeye on the other hand...

it's a conversion and while it's not a bad one, the fight scenes are not made for 3D - a lot of them are dark, with lots of quick cutting and panning.

I dunno how you could call this flick "great" but I wasn't bothered by it.

laughed a few times, the action was decent and the overall story arc (beyond a few minor issues -- vagiency overtones, the villain makes a couple weird turns, most of the characters are useless) had an enjoyable path.

Everyone carried their roles well, the plot didn't drag too much, the frost giants looked amazing, and they did an outstanding job not bogging us down with too much Asgard mythology, giving us just enough to be familiar with.

The fish out of water shit bordered on too much, but they cut it quickly enough so it didn't really get on my nerves.

Oh and anyone hating on Kat Dennings needs to shut the entire fuck up.

- Loki was painfully misused. he should have been one of the best villains in any Marvel movie, and came off more bitchy than powerful. ugh, and they need him for Avengers too.

- Thor and Natalie Portman had to be one of the worst love stories ever told, even for a superhero movie. a smiling doofus from another planet meets petite scientist with a school girl crush. a couple days later, Thor decides he should sacrifice himself for her (and Earth, of course). audience wonders if the two will ever meet again and have another shallow conversation about nothing.

I don't mind superficial relationships in this types of movies, but at least spare us the horrible heart to heart scenes that littered this film.

- how useless was the secondary cast? Kat Dennings and Stellan Skarsgard could have left after the opening scene. Sif and the Warriors Three were awkwardly put in this movie without any real purpose, as the writers had enough on their hands linking Earth and Asgard.

- Chris Hemsworth was a solid Thor. he'll do well as a side character in The Avengers. Idris Elba was good here too.

Aside from some cool action scenes and the actor playing Thor, everything else was forgettable. Probably it was the characters or Thor and the events surrounding him, but I find his story boring. I say it's as enjoyable as the Incredible Hulk.

Surprisingly little action, really. Outside of the first fight with the Frost Giants, there wasn't much of Thor as Thor using his power, which dragged it down some for me.

Hiddleton and Hopkins chewed the scenery well. Elba and Hemsworth both were good in their roles too. The Asgard stuff was obviously way better than the Earth stuff.

Not much to say. I found it enjoyable and diverting, even though it's not close to the better hero films.

In response to Reply # 0

Otherwise I found Chris Hemsworth to be amiable and hilariously arrogant, and everyone else -- save a VERY unnecessary Kat Dennings -- to be just fine

In fact, I kinda dug everything about the movie that didn't center around Amidala making goo-goo eyes at Hemsworth, or Kat Dennings cracking wise about how big and skrong he was... that shit felt like it was shoehorned in... and so when the two lovers are separated in the end, and he vows to come back to her, then doesn't but still says he's going to come back, well, those moments had to be earned and weren't.

Even still, I thought the movie was well-directed by Kenneth Branagh (and now this choice makes sense, seeing as the movie's light on action and heavy on the father-son-son drama), looked great, and nicely paced... wasn't as terrible as I thought it would be...

I'm not up on the comics, so I don't know how much this adhere's to Thor's complete origin story... but the story laid out fine for me...

In response to Reply # 0

-The Thor-Jane love story was far too manufactured...there was no natural progression or real development of it. I can understand why it was in the movie, but it didn't earn any kind of real connection with the audience imo.

- Kat Dennings character...absolutely pointless. That may be the highest paycheck: unnecessary role ratio of all time.

There was a lot of good thought...thought the casting for the major roles was very well done, Hemsworth was quite solid. The visuals were fantastic, the voices were fantastic, and the pacing overall was very good imo. Solid film, just wish they could have done a better job of developing the love storyline.

http://blog.melanism.com/2011/05/09/movie-of-the-week-thor/

Of all the Marvel comic book movies, I thought Thor would be the most problematic. Instead of just dropping some fantastic circumstance into a world we’re familiar with, Thor had to explain the concept of Asgard and Norse gods. Also, it wasn’t really an origin story as Thor enters the story having already realizing his full-strength unlike Tony Stark or Peter Parker. That said, I thought they did a good job for the most part.

What I Liked:

The Asgard Cast: Chris Hemsworth was entertaining as the arrogant Thor. He was a physical presence as well as being very charming during the scenes on Earth. Tom Hiddleston stole the movie but that’s not surprising considering the was playing Loki. He actually made you feel for him despite his villainy. Anthony Hopkins showed up to play Odin. His scenes with Thor and Loki were some of the best of the film. Idris Elba brought more to the role of Heimdell than I was expecting. Heimdell barely has a personality in the comics and Elba brought him to life which was a tough considering Heimdell speaks in generally the same tone.

I thought Asgard and the Rainbow Bridge were amazingly depicted.

The Action: Even though there weren’t that action scenes, the ones that we did get were entertaining, particularly Thor and company confronting the Frost Giants at Jotunheim.
The Humor: The movie was a lot funnier than I expected it to be. I’m glad they treated Thor on Earth mostly for laughs.

What I Didn’t Like:

The Background Story: It was a little off-putting to have the Norse gods kinda turned into aliens but it did make it more accessible. Also, there was a lot of explaining. For a comic book movie, there was a lot of talking but I figured this would happen with this film.

The Earth Cast: I didn’t not like them but they were kinda pointless. Natalie Portman (Jane Foster)…I mean…Academy Award Winner Natalie Portman was generally wasted. She wasn’t bad or annoying but she didn’t bring anything to the role. Then again, the role only called for making goo-goo eyes at Thor and talking about being an astrophysicist. The same goes for Kat Dennings (Darcy Lewis) but her role was pretty much one liners about how hot and/or crazy Thor is. They did the best with what they were given but they weren’t given much.

Thor’s Power: I thought the effect of Thor swinging Mjolnir around looked a little silly.

The “Romance”: When Thor and Jane kissed, a little kid in the row behind us said “Ewww.” I felt his/her pain. It wasn’t earned really.

The Ending: I know Odin’s a god but that guy came out of nowhere to save Thor and (almost) Loki AND in full-armor. Did he not want to get caught on the Rainbow Bridge in his Odinsleep pajamas?

All that said, I was entertained and I’m glad Marvel has gotten this one out of the way. I can’t wait to see how The Avengers comes together.

movie was great, loved the Hawkeye cameo. Any of yall catch the Infinity Gauntlet glove? Only thing that didn't make sense to me was Odin saving a Thor (that should have been able to fly) straight out of the Odin sleep with full armor as stated above. If they somehow could have pulled off Frost Giants the size they were in the Avengers cartoon that would have been sweet as well. Loki wasn't slimy enough to me but nevertheless I was impressed

I thought it did something that you really don't see in mainstream flicks.

In this flick, the female characters were NOT the eye candy. The closest you get to that is Russo in a dress, and she's more seen in a dear old mother light than a milf 'ooh lemme hit that' light. On Earth, Portman and the other girl are always in jeans and a shirt and are NOT used as sex symbols. In fact, THOR is the sex symbol, bare chest and all, and it's the female characters who are gawking over him.

Portman stutters and acts giddy and awkward about him, and it's pretty clear why.

The love story does fall flat because there's no real chemistry, BUT in the usual mainstream flick, action flick in general, the audience is always left to wonder why the female character would bother with the male lead, him being so shy/nerdy/awkward/silent/unromantic/etc. But here it's reversed and the audience can see EXACTLY why Portman would fall for Thor--but not the reverse. No shot of the tiddle bitties, no close up of long legs...but you get T flexing with his shirt off.

Even in the Stallone/Schwarzenegger movies from the 80s/early 90s, the 'romance' seemed to come more from the heroine falling for their savior figure. Stallone/Schwarzenegger usually had a quiet, unromantic and usually rude manner, but would get the girl mostly through saving her ass over and over (because often in those movies, at first the heroine dislikes, hates or is scared of the hero). It was kind of interesting that right from the jump, the movie established the hero as the sex symbol and the heroine as the figure that the audience is meant to identify with.

This movie was a C, maybe C+, relatively forgettable--but this was just one small part that made me think a bit. Kenneth Brannagh is a smart director, I'm sure he knew what he was doing.

Enjoyed the rest of the cast and the movie but she's terrible. Should've cast the girl from Adventures in Babysitting instead. Hemsworth was great & I was really impressed with Hiddleston/Loki & Feore/Laufey. Elba & Hopkins were better than expected as well. Good action, solid direction & much better than the last Iron Man & Hulk flick.

...i dug every part of the movie, my favorite part being when he goes for what was his...

...this movie also reminded me how much the He-Man franchise "borrowed" from Thor's story through the comics/folklore...

"yes, sometimes my rhymes are sexist, but you lovely bitches and hos should know i'm tryin to correct it"- hiphopopotamus

already figured it'd be a good movie but was wondering how the story would progress on Earth. much of it was either hilarity or bad ass with a powerless Thor still being able to out muscle all who stepped toward him.
