"Moon (2009) - sci-fi, Sam Rockwell, Kevin Spacey (SPOILERS)"
Wed Jul-22-09 06:52 PM by ZooTown74

Trailer:
http://uk.media.movies.ign.com/media/143/14313551/vids_1.html

Moon is a refreshingly philosophical and ultimately touching indie reflection on a genre that too often loses sight of character and story amid the wizardry of its special effects; told in the classic filmmaking tradition of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Set in the near future, Moon stars Sam Rockwell (Frost/Nixon, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind) as Sam Bell, an astronaut assigned by Lunar Industries to a three-year mission mining Helium 3 on the moon, the earth's new energy source. As his contract comes to an end and Sam's health starts to deteriorate, painful headaches, hallucinations and a lack of focus lead to an almost fatal accident. While recuperating, Sam meets a younger, angrier version of himself, who claims to be there to fulfill the same three- year contract Sam started all those years ago. The directorial feature debut from Duncan Jones, Moon also includes the voice of Kevin Spacey (21, American Beauty) as "Gerty," the lunar base's mysterious robot, whose mission is to keep Sam Bell occupied and on task. Moon is produced by Stuart Fenegan (Liberty Films) and Trudie Styler (Xingu Films) and written by Nathan Parker from a story by Duncan Jones.

2001 + Solaris = Moon - Okay maybe not and Rockwell as usual looks superb in this.
I'll check it for sure when it comes out.

Interesting fact: this is directed by David Bowie's son and produced by Sting's wife.

Methinks he is a cybernetic human type thingey, given the wife and kid backstory for to keep him focused and they just rocket up a new one once the old one gets close to its 3-year.

Looks cool tho.

Also, films like this almost always disappoint with their endings. But maybe I'm still jaded about Sunshine which seems very cool and then devolved into a slasher flick.

that ending was as tense as the rest of the film for me.

moon is sloppy editing and visually stale. the story skipped past climactic moments as if they weren't meant to be climactic. rockwell is great in it though.

even clint mansell's score seemed phoned in.

i was sorely let down. so much potential from the trailer.

Damn. I had high hopes as well. I guess I'll wait for DVD now.

The acting was decent, and it's hard to carry a movie entirely by yourself (I don't count computer Kevin Spacey). But even Rockwell let me down a bit from what I usually expect from him.

**SPOILERS BELOW**
I get that it was less about plot, and more about the morality of cloning and the "emotional journey" that the two sams went through, but by the time they figured out for sure that they were clones, i didn't care. They had bored me so thoroughly I really didn't care what happened to the character(s). The whole time I kept thinking, "ok, I'll wait it out, something interesting is gonna happen." But nope. Nothing. They really lost me when he started getting buddy-buddy with the other clone. My girlfriend accurately described it as "Duplicity in space."

It had the look of a movie that was supposed to be
good.

It just wasn't really very good.

Wasn't *bad*

Just wasn't good, at all. Very forgettable.

Its getting rave reviews on Rotten Tomatoes(lol),
largely because its has the look of a movie that
is supposed to be good, so people are inventing
reasons that its supposed to be good.

Again - not bad. Solid.

Not very good, though.

Sorta fumbles the hook or just looks very awkward
dribbling the ball up the court.

This is the the type of movie that might have been
cool 20 years ago.

Maybe.

so, then.... if I were to rate these comments (0-10).....

• wasn't really very good (if not "very good", perhaps just "good" or "average" -- 6)
• wasn't *bad* (if not "bad", the maybe "average" - 5)
• wasn't good. (not "good", but not necessarily "bad", so maybe "just average" - 5)
• not bad (so maybe "good" then - 7)
• solid ("solid" = "good" in my book - 7)
• not very good, though. (oops, ok, just "good" then? maybe average - 6)

Orbit's final rating:
* 6 out of 10 *

LOL.

While it used a couple clichés, I thought it an interesting twist on the standard sci-fi fare. It dragged a little bit in places, but I felt the story and concept was compelling enough to keep my curiosity piqued. It felt a little flat overall and didn't get me as invested in the character(s) and overall film as much as I would have preferred, but it was worth the 2 hours spent watching it.

Reminds me a little bit of Silent Running, the 70's flick with a similar theme (sans major plot point) starring Bruce Dern, which as far as I can recall, was slightly better.

I half expected an Ovaltine commercial to come on every
6 or 7 minutes.

Seriously though - About 70% of that movie could have
been cut out. This did not deserve to be a full motion
picture. The "drama" built for a looooooong time for
absolutely no reason. They could have scrunched the
rising action into 4 minutes and it wouldn't have made
any difference

>the twilight zone was often way more compelling and
>thought-provoking than 95% of the overblown schlock hollywood

Exactly - and it fit into 30 minutes, just like
this film should have

Right - you decided it was going to be good before you
saw the movie, just like I said earlier.

>^^^ thinks I, Robot was a great sci-fi movie, which makes your
>opinion on sci-fi highly suspect.

The only reason people don't like I, Robot is because its not
nerd-ly correct to like Will Smith movies and because it uses
the same title as a classic(Of course, I, Robot' is actually
the perfect kind of remake/adaptation, because it doesn't try
to remake the book at all, but only use the central elements in
a more modern and relevant context...everyone should be happy.
The nerds have their book, and the people who are cool and
can admit to liking Will Smith movies have an awesome Sci
Fi movie).

Other than that, no one can name me a *good* reason why it
isn't superb, because it is. I can absolutely guarantee that
if a non-Will Smith actor starred in it, you'd all love it,
even though Smith nailed that role...one of the better Sci
Fri protagonists I've seen, ever(certainly better than
Rockwell in this 'Moon' bullshit..LOL)

Sam Rockwell is a hell of an actor, script/direction/production were all great but he really carried the movie.

set designs were fantastic, amazing this only cost $5 mil

and good science in a sci-fi movie - whodathunkit? I was so hyped to see the magnetic railgun launcher - this was like a Popular Science article come to life.

great score too (minus the sappy sad music tune), really helped to set the mood.

just great stuff all around.

The fact that the set design looked like an airport bathroom
does not mean the movie had to be bad.

The movie was bad because it was bad.

The set designs, however, were not "fantastic."

>well, it's certainly no Hancock.

No, Hancock was a silly fun summer movie.

This was a booooooring bore fest made for the Latte

in every possible way

the fact that you are apparently so intimately acquainted with the insides of airport bathrooms does not have anything to do with the set designs for the movie.

>The movie was bad because it was bad.

I, Robot was bad because it was bad. and because Will Smith hammed it up too much.

hey I enjoyed Hancock for the dumb silly fun & I, Robot for the action and FX.

Moon is just a better written, better acted, better directed & all-around better movie.

The answer: Because 'Saving Private Ryan' was good.

remember he video phoned home and his daughter, all grown up, answered the phone. he din't know it was her, because she was like 18 or some shit.

the original sam obviously had been gone a long time, because there were so many clones made and subsequently disposed of. they only last 3 years at a time, apparently.

yeah, i'm pretty sure it was his daughter.

right, he didn't know what she looked like grown up, so how did he see a vision of the grown-up her in the chair? that's what confused me. also cuz besides being brunette it didn't quite look like the daughter to me - daughter at home is 15 but chick in the chair looked like a fully grown woman to me.

but there aren't any other explanations really so I guess it must've been her.

he didn't have to "know" who she was or "remember" her...it wasn't his memory of her. it was the original sam's.

that's

i thought the older version of the daughter had pretty dark hair.

the director stated that it was Sam's daughter. He said he wrote that part using the theory that people say that twins can sometimes feel or have the same thoughts as each other without being near each other. He said that he believed that the clones acted the same way, in that they would sometimes see things that the original Sam back on Earth would see......

I never really thought till afterwords either it's all one actor (although he is playing two roles)

I wonder if the hallucinations of his daughter were a nod to the gholas/clones in Dune who eventually share all their memories

Who cares about "nods?"

The movie sucked. How about the film "nod" to being a
good motion picture?

Like I said - this film should have been a twilight
zone episode.

It had ten minute stretches that could easily have been cut
the fuck out.

Booooooring.

In response to Reply # 0

Edit: After writing the post below, I found an answer on the IMDB forum for the film: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1182345/board/thread/140457997?d=140582656&p=1#140582656

I'm leaving the post up anyway, in case anyone has more to add.
------------------------------------

There's something I'm unsure of about when Sam crashes his vehicle. Is this a repeating scenario that occurs every time a new clone needs to be awakened?

I'm pretty sure the answer is "no", since that is what the "death pod" is for. But if that's the case, how do they introduce a new clone, and into what scenario does he wake up?

Do they just drop the new one off in his bedroom with the same fixed memory as every other clone or something?

I'm not sure the film made it clear what the usual protocol was (if indeed the vehicle crash was just a one-time accident).

-----
Edit #2: Another imdb thread addresses this question here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1182345/board/thread/143446724?d=143468474&p=1#143468474

I'm satisfied.

Yeah, I was a little spaced out (pardon the pun) during that scene, so I didn't completely remember. But I got it now.

By the way, I was ready to get freaked out by seeing a bunch of dead clone remains under the death chamber. I'm glad that scene didn't happen.

Nice blend of humor & suspense & a great performance from Sammy Rock. I think the story could've been fleshed out a bit more but this was a good debut for DJ & I look forward to see what else he has on tap. Mansell's score started out great during the opening credits but kinda tailed off after that.

boring and dull. the moon scenes were okay but technically they were laughable... outer space movies are still way too hollywood to me, they don't actually care about what REAL outer space looks or feels like.

the kevin spacey robot was laughable... HAL >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Kevin Spacey bot... FOH

typical plotline as well:

a) man is in limbo in outer space, can't come home
b) talks to wife and baby daughter, implied sadness
c) man is lonely because he has no friends, suffers from neuroses (wow haven't seen that before)
d) begins to hallucinate and has mental conflicts with implied antagonist (robot, corporate megapower)

this is when i turn the shit off. i've seen this before. give me something new, please.

very interesting, I liked it. I thought it took a little long to get going, but it kept my interest once the clone showed up because I wanted know how they were going to resolve the situation. I wish it would have had a better ending, showing what happened once Sam #2 made it back to Earth, etc.....

'Moon' had about 4,000 times as many plot holes
as 'Avatar'

Difference is, you don't feel "sophisticated" if you
say you thought 'Avatar' was smart. 'Moon' on the other
hand? Oh, yous damn near speak with a british accent
when you talk about it...that's how smart it makes you
feel about yourself

'Moon' was doggie doo

You want a good Sci Fi STORY? Pour
out your frappalatte, get some popcorn and orange
soda, some gummi bears, and watch 'Avatar?'

the first time I watched it, I turned it off about 30 minutes in on some "this shit is boring as hell". I went back the next day to watch it and rode it out, and got intrigued with how it would end about 45 minutes in.

The one thing I didn't like about it is that it gave up the secret too soon. It would have been a lot easier to have it seem like Sam #1 was hallucinating or going crazy in his interactions with Sam #2, as opposed to it coming out as soon as Sam #2 showed up that he might be a clone, and then having the robot confirm it later. It would have made the scene where Sam #1 finds the secret room where they store the clones a lot more exciting of a reveal, as opposed to just a confirmation of what we already knew......

It reads alot like an Asimov story in the sense that it doesn't try to shy away from the mundane aspects of living on the moon for three years doing essentially close to nothing.

I couldn't find any plot holes worth nit-picking over and Rockwell was solid.

It's definitely an 'art-house' film. Not easily accesible, but if you're a fan of the genre it's a welcome addition.

Also, for all the people poo-pooing the science...I notice how you haven't given any examples.

The whole, uh, cloning thing? The thing with the not only recorded memories, but then the implanted memories? That thing? That didn't seem... far-fetched?

Edit: If we're being honest with ourselves, we should have the same reaction to this that we had with The 6th Day. And it sure seemed stupid in THAT movie...

Still, liked Moon though.

Sure. Thing is this. Sci Fi fans are the most sensitive
fans in the world, and they are very specific about what
they think is "feasible."

If they like the movie, anything you say bad about it is
wrong, and if you think something in it was far-fetched, you
simply "don't know modern science and aren't using your
imagination."

If they didn't like the movie (usually because it was digestible
to the public and made actually money at the box office), than
they nitpick it atom by atom.

There's no consistency or real rhyme and reason, at all.

Its quite juvenile, its just the way that crowd is.

I mean it's fiction framed by musings around science.

People laud 2001, but working in IT I know how ridiculous the concept of HAL is, but it works as a SciFi concept.

I'd be mad if I was you, too.

At least the fact that it was a flop makes you all
feel better about liking it. If it was a success, y'all
wouldn't feel cool and smart for liking it.

Oh, and:
http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=irobot.htm

It cost 120, and still made 3 times its budget.
Moon couldn't make TWICE its budget, and it cost
4 million.

And let's not even get into DVD/Blu Ray sales.

Box office success isn't everything, though. I'd be
here riding for 'Moon', if it was actually a good
movie. Part of the reason it made so little at the
box office is because nobody saw it twice, because its
boring and not that interesting.

Like I said, I'd be mad if I was you too.

it didn't make mega-millions at the box office because it was an indie sci-fi flick without big explosions and spaceships zooming around.

lol, robot was dumb and not very interesting, but it made money because had explosions and stuff + will smith shilling products with all the subtlety of a billy mays infomercial:

you need to channel your post anger into getting your friends
to actually go to the movies and watch 'Moon' instead of seeing
downlaods on their laptops. Maybe that way they'll be
financial incentive to make more indy sci-fi films. Hopefully,
if more films get made the odds are that one of the will actually
be good.

Problem with films like 'Moon' is that they ruin it for all
the actual good movies out there.

small indie films aren't a threat to big flashy studio blockbusters, especially in the sci-fi genre. even ones that are vastly superior to the big hollywood productions, like moon is to lol, robot. will smith will still be banking that product placement endorsement money for his brainless big budget sci-fi extravaganzas no matter how much better of a performance a sam rockwell gives in smart, small budget indy sci-fi films. so your whole agenda that you are pushing so hard here is as completely unnecessary as will smith wearing converse all-stars is to a story about renegade robots in the future.

The Converse All-Stars actually fit the character very well,
because he's distrustful of modern things and likes retro
items. Few items are more bread and butter "retro(to the
audience)" than Converse All-Stars. It fit perfectly.

The fact that you can be so mad at a detail like that tips me
off to what's really going on here. In your anti-capitalism

Big man - I'm not the one who made 'Moon' a box office

Your friends made it a disappointment. My friends made it

In my opinion, the director and writer made it a disappointment.

he's not distrustful of modern things in general, he's only distrustful of robots. the movie is very clear on that point. him wearing chucks in the movie has no point other than getting a check from converse.

the fact that you're fabricating reasons for it fitting the character instead of just saying "yeah they took that converse money - so?" makes it pretty clear that you're simply pushing an agenda here.

Probably a B+/A- had I not seen the trailer first. That really let the clone out of the bag, and took some steam out of the plot for me. Luckily the whole plot doesn't depend on that reveal, and the whole movie doesn't depend on the plot. But still. It would have been a pretty cool little twist to walk in on completely cold.

One thing I loved was how deftly they handled the switch between Clone 1 and Clone 2. I totally missed it, having assumed that Clone 1 died in his auto accident, so I was confused as hell at the 2 Rockwell's sharing screen time for a minute there. Your mileage may vary depending on how sharp you are, but I was just the right amount of stupid for that to have an effect on me. And I love when movies, particularly sci-fi movies, can give me that sense of unease.

And c'mon, Rockwell did his thing here. I would think that presented with the opportunity to completely carry a film like this, a lot of actors would either freeze like a deer in headlights, or overcompensate by hamming it up too much. Rockwell gave a nice, steady performance, and captivated my attention the whole time even though the story was spare and he didn't have a whole lot to do physically.

And props to Gerty. Gerty was creeping me out too because I kept expecting for him to pul a HAL. But he was like a Bizarro HAL, where over time he malfunctions and gets nicer. That's the robot story you don't hear enough about in the media, and the kind of robot I would hope to be trapped in space with.

The effects were just right, too. Believable, functional, and never overpowered the scene.

How does all that even work, anyway? Assuming of course that the federal government of this futurescape resembles our own.

Like, is the original Sam just back on Earth cashing those paychecks every 2 weeks? Do you get paid for your clones' work? You'd have to, right? I'm guessing they all have your social security number. Maybe not though.

Yeah, the more I think about it, how could the IRS not be in on this whole cloning scheme? Unless there's just some really creative book keeping going on, I don't see how Lunar could hide what they've been up to from anyone but Sam. I mean, you've got Sam Bell renewing his 3 year contract for 900 consecutive years, that's going to look a little suspect, is it not? Maybe everyone knows about it. Maybe they don't even give a shit. Maybe the Lunar Annual Report has a picture of Sam on the cover with the word "PWN'D" underneath it.

Man, shit, the minute I knocked them signal jammin' towers down I would have called my family, then I would have logged straight onto Bank of America's site to check my balance. And fuck climbing into that little Helium torpedo, I'd have woken up ALL my clones and had a goddamn CLONE ARMY waiting on that 'rescue crew'. Jack their ride and see how *they* like being on the moon for a few years.

I really had no expectations since I don't even really remember it being out nor had I read anything in this post.

I'm a fan of Sam Rockwell, he usually gives an interesting performance even if the movies he's in aren't always up to his caliber otherwise.

This film is no different. Damn, this was one of the *slowest* moving 90 minutes or so I've ever watched.

I tossed it on at 8:30 & was checking my watch by 20 minutes after 9 thinking I must be near the end, shocked that I hadn't even been watching for an hour yet.

The concept was kind of cool but there's no payoff, not in terms of the final resolution or even the journey we go through while he's making the discovery (keep in mind I didn't see the trailer either, so the early clone reveal wasn't telegraphed for me like it apparently was others in this post).

And whoever earlier in the thread wrote about 'not caring' by the time they knew for sure was on point, I really had very little emotional investment in these clones by the time they started wrapping it up (which seems to take forever & leads nowhere).

It's funny that Orbit mentioned Twilight Zone because that is the exact thing I thought to myself when I was watching it, this would have been a great half hour Serling episode.

It wasn't like the details in the story required 90 minutes to tell us, there was nothing in terms of set design or pyrotechnics that wouldn't have been fine in a TV context & I actually think from an empathy standpoint a 'less is more' appraoch could have helped me connect with Sam a lot more than I did because by the end I couldn't have cared less what happened to him (or them if you will).

Rachel getting blown up in Dark Knight had more emotional value to me by that time & I thought Moonface Gyllenhal was a too-late mercy killing in that one.

An interesting concept mostly mishandled, despite the best efforts of the lead, & culminating in a fairly forgettable flick.

Whoever said this is a Sci-Fi classic must have been on the same shit I was on when I happened to catch Surviving The Game on acid in a friend's dorm room when I was 18 & thought it had changed my life until I woke up the next morning.

Honesty will prevail here eventually.

This film was not very good, at all.

and pretty much had the exact same reaction as bombastic above. cosign all his points. thought it was a decent enough sci-fi flick for an indie, but super slow in places and with no real payoff. too many scenes seemed like they were in there just so they could see what they could do with camera tricks/special effects and doubles. like the ping-pong scene. felt like they should have gone for a different third act and followed the clone down to earth to see what happened, but i understand why they didn't. probably would have been more interesting than anything that happened on the moon.

rockwell was great. appreciated the performance even more after i watched the extras and saw how difficult it is to act out every scene twice against thin air-- once as clone 1, once as clone 2, and the two performances have to match in timing and intensity. pretty impressive.

I'm honestly not that sure why its so impressive. I mean, the
movie was bad. I didn't care about Rockwell's character, and
it shouldn't take me extra footage to make me appreciate the
acting. I should appreciate it the first time around. I didn't,
because it wasn't that impressive.

especially in a year when avatar, district 9, and star trek were all released. as for rockwell's performance, it's incredibly difficult to carry a movie being pretty much the only guy on screen for 90 minutes. it's also incredibly difficult to react to things that aren't physically there in a believable way (see: actors' version of 2012 trailer, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iX6cfzDpd_o). in those respects, it was a great performance.

on the other hand, the movie was flat-out boring in places and it's pretty easy to stop caring what happens to the clones altogether, and some of that blame has to fall on his shoulders. there are definitely better actors in his generation who could have made this interesting from beginning to end (gosling, ledger RIP, etc). but with that said, there are a lot of other actors, good actors, who would have been absolutely unwatchable in something like this. instead of being a decent little sci-fi indie flick, it would have been a disaster. so i give rockwell his props.

pacing was fucked up

and im generally pretty patient w slow movies

but I felt like the key plot points were revealed early on and then the film just played itself out, making for an underwhelming viewing experience

like i said, however, rockwell did his thing and deserves a lot of credit

Now, I really like Clooney in Up in the Air and like Firth in A Single Man (I haven't seen Invictus), but I think Rockwell in Moon is a more impressive performance than both of those. I really like Jenkins in The Visitor, too, and if that got a marketing push then the people that handled Moon and The Informant! missed out on cashing in on Rockwell and Damon's excellent work (that is, if they didn't take out FYC ads or send out screeners; I haven't browsed through, say, Variety, and personally don't know anyone who gets screeners).

As for the film, I liked the final half hour and, while I'm not usually one who thinks in terms of prescriptive criticism, the film would've been much stronger to me as a 40-odd minute short. Overall, I'm indifferent.
