The reason you get so blind sided by the reveal is that up until the reveal the question wasn't who was Kiser Sose but rather is Keaton still alive or dead.
It's a fun point to argue... although either way you slice it, I don't think it changes the fact that he was redeemed in the end. And I guess that's all that *really* matters...
i thought it was a bit too pat and convenient the way Christina Ricci says "Billy... i love you"
i think that was the one thing that was a bit too... much. tonally, it was a bit jarring from the rest of the film and sort of made the rest of the ending a bit too cute and even anticlimactic to me

except for that one line... perhaps that line actually said more about Layla's character than Billy's but up until that time, Layla hadn't been developed at all.
she functions kinda as an idealized fantasy figure than as a real character. and for her to just fall head over heels for this emotionally handicapped jerk was just a bit TOO idealized.

I liked the 'what if' sequence, and the scene where Gallo is at the store, That was good. But overall the movie kind of deflated at the end. Still it was a damn good movie.

but both endings are sick to me. i mean "i see dead people" became a joke and corny NOW, but when you first saw it and didn't know it was coming you really didnt like it?
but when he realized what was really going and it was all inside his head.... like when he looked in the mirror... i consider that part of the ending, which was fantastic.

Yeah that's how it should've ended. I thought they kinda gave away the twist in 1 of the earlier trailers when it's mentioned that they all have the same bday tho
For thoughtful viewers, however, an equal surprise is still waiting. That is the mystery of why Hitchcock marred the ending of a masterpiece with a sequence that is grotesquely out of place. After the murders have been solved, there is an inexplicable scene during which a long-winded psychiatrist (Simon Oakland) lectures the assembled survivors on the causes of Norman's psychopathic behavior. This is an anticlimax taken almost to the point of parody.
If I were bold enough to reedit Hitchcock's film, I would include only the doctor's first explanation of Norman's dual personality: "Norman Bates no longer exists. He only half existed to begin with. And now, the other half has taken over, probably for all time." Then I would cut out everything else the psychiatrist says, and cut to the shots of Norman wrapped in the blanket while his mother's voice speaks ("It's sad when a mother has to speak the words that condemn her own son..."). Those edits, I submit, would have made "Psycho" very nearly perfect. I have never encountered a single convincing defense of the psychiatric blather; Truffaut tactfully avoids it in his famous interview.
IMO there was no reason to frame that movie around the theme of chance...it was much more interesting watching the characters without it than it was watching Woody force everything to fit together to where he could make that one last scene...

Memento has one of the best endings ever.You have no idea what you been watching until that very last scene. The Illusionist is another ending that I loved a lot.

I think he was telling the truth at that point & Lenny pretty much believed him too. But just like Teddy told him, he doesn't remember &/or still isn't satisfied. Which is why Teddy decided to use him to do his dirty work to kill Jimmy Grants & then Lenny decides to use Teddy to be his new John G.

That scream that Donald Sutherland does was awesome.
The Bruno wrestling scene had me laughing for hours. Didn't see it coming and I literally couldn't breath from the laughs. The Celine Dion song, the guy crying in the audience in slo-mo, the chairs being thrown. hohoho. Can't stop laughing even now.

A good ending brings everything into focus and can tie the themes of the movie together in a way that wasn't very clear earlier in the movie. The Hurt Locker & Seven are two movies that the very last lines of the movie changed the way I view everything in the movie that lead up to that point.
