"WHITE PEOPLE. Lemme Holla at y'all real fast (VANITY FAIR Controversy)"

Seriously-

I just wanna know what be going through y'alls heads, cuz we
need to dialogue and HEAL on some real shit.

I'm about to get on some 95 shit and ice grill anything south
of a paper bag, god.

Okay, no I won't, but I'm saying. Let's fix this.

In 2010? Be serious.

http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/beauty/vanity-fairs-quot-new-hollywood-quot-issue-completely-lacks-diversity-578862/

Vanity Fair's "New Hollywood" issue completely lacks diversity

One thing magazines love to do is call dibs on who will be the new "It" celebrities in the year to come. Sometimes they pick stars whose careers are destined to take off, occasionally they make incredible calls with near-nobodies who later become A-listers, and usually the majority of their picks fade into oblivion. While we'd like to think celeb bible Vanity Fair puts a great deal of thought and planning into its annual "New Hollywood" issue, this year the editors really limited their scope when it came to choosing the next big stars. (Or perhaps they overemphasized the "Fair"? ) Every woman on its new cover is extremely thin and very, very white. Unless Vanity Fair considers one redhead to be diversity, we feel the need to cry foul.

The cover of the March issue features Abbie Cornish, Kristen Stewart, Carey Mulligan, Amanda Seyfried, Rebecca Hall, Mia Wasikowska, Emma Stone, Evan Rachel Wood, and Anna Kendrick. Many, if not all of these women have good reason to grace the Vanity Fair cover, and to be a part of what they have dubbed "the fresh faces of 2010." Evan Rachel Wood has garnered critical acclaim since her Golden Globe-nominated performance in 2003's "Thirteen" as well as loads of media attention from her highly publicized romance with rocker Marilyn Manson. Kristen Stewart was catapulted to fame by the mega-successful "Twilight" franchise and will star as Joan Jett in the upcoming film, "The Runaways," while Amanda Seyfried's career was put in motion after her role in 2008's "Mamma Mia!" But WAIT: Vanity Fair already had both Stewart and Seyfried on an August 2008 cover touting "Hollywood's New Wave." And this was also a white-girl-only cover. Were there no promising young actors of color who could have been featured in either issue?

Though it's true, Young Hollywood is predominantly Caucasian, we can think of a slew of non-white, non-rail thin actors who made a splash this year (Gabourey Sidibe from "Precious" anyone?). In the accompanying article, Vanity Fair writer Evgenia Peretz calls out the young cover stars by their best attributes: "downy-soft cheeks," "button nose," "patrician looks and celebrated pedigree," "dewy, wide-eyed loveliness," "Ivory-soap-girl features." Roles for black, Asian, and Latin actors are scarce in Hollywood, but surely Sidibe, Zoe Saldana of "Avatar" and "Star Trek," and Freida Pinto of "Slumdog Millionaire" are having their moment. Vanity Fair may have been looking for the most promising batch of talent for their issue, but they should have been looking for a diverse group of women as well.

We reached out to Vanity Fair for comment, but as of publishing time they did not respond.

I'm sure Vanity Fair didn't think anyone would mind, since only white people read Vanity Fair.

Still, I would've at LEAST put Saldana on there.

The real question is, where are all of the vehicles for young talented black women? If ALL of these girls can be getting this kind of press for their roles in films in the past year or two, where are the black women of equal age?

6. "The Power of the Token"
In response to Reply # 0

Really, what this controversy proves is that the token is still a powerful entity in supposedly post-racial America. For YEARS, Vanity Fair has been throwing out groups of white people with one or two minorities in the mix. For a couple years, Penelope Cruz was the last melanin standing. Here's a bunch of Leibovitz's Hollywood covers.

http://www.vanityfair.com/culture/features/2007/02/hollywoodcovers_slideshow200702#slide=2

But mostly what this is is people getting upset over a symptom and not the disease. TV is getting whiter and whiter (and helmed by more and more men, even though women are running more studios). The film world hasn't gotten much more diverse over the years. George Lopez once stated that he hated when cops would go to a door during the movie because he knew that would be the only time he'd see someone that looked like him: either the suspect or the help. It's still the same.

If Vanity Fair had thrown Gabourey Sibide on the cover, would suddenly everything be alright? If in 2008, they had put Zoe Kravitz on the cover, would people have slept better? (I mention those two because both of them were featured in the actual magazines).

Should Vanity Fair have played the game and thrown Zoe Saldana on there? Yes. But this Vanity Fair issue is a true picture of a fucked up system and what we're seeing now is people not liking a reflection and blaming it on the mirror.

You know there are GORGEOUS talented marketable young black women out there too.

They just aren't creating enough roles in film for more than one or two young black actresses to take right now. Same goes for TV... the roles just aren't there.

looks like a photo shoot at one of those branch davidian type cults. yeah, omitting zoe saldana and gabby sidibe is unforgivable. them two alone got a billion dollars of box office and a best actress oscar nom more than all them white girls combined.

Avatar is the biggest movie of all time, and Precious is this years little indie engine that could. That's inexcusable.

one of the commenters on that yahoo article, "melissa b," explains to us all why there's nothing to see here:

"There are many amazing diverse actresses in Hollywood, but they are not the next up and coming actresses in Hollywood. Precious has won countless awards, but has Gabourey Sidibe been cast in any other new movies? Has Frieda Pinto starred in another huge blockbuster or even a main starring role? Avatar may have broken tons of records, but has Zoe Saldana really shown that she is up and coming and worth her while? These are the reasons why it happened to be that the women chosen were Caucasian, not because they didn't want to be diverse."

gabourey sidibe just snagged a best actress nod in a film nominated for six academy awards including best picture. freida pinto was the critically-acclaimed lead in last year's best picture winner and just wrapped a shoot with anthony hopkins, directed by woody allen. zoe saldana was getting oscar buzz (from ebert among others) for her lead role in avatar and was also in star trek which combined have, what, $2 billion in worldwide box office? oh, and here's a very good article titled: "is avatar star zoe saldana the next kate winslet?"

http://www.mtv.com/movies/news/articles/1629100/story.jhtml

BUT WHAT HAVE THEY REALLY DONE?

This is the part that really stands out. Lol. "Has Zöe really shown that she is up and coming and worth her while?" Wake up, McFly!

I'm not sure what their criteria is based on. Zöe was already featured in Vanity Fair though.
http://torreyb.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/cusl14_hollywood_covers0803.jpg

She is in her thirties now (Sooooo old) afterall. I don't remember if she was part of the up and coming list. With two more sequels planned for Avatar, she deserves a cover all on her own. I'm sure she will be unstoppable in Hollywood as we get closer to this. The Star Trek fan base alone will most likely propel her in Hollywood for some time to come if any future sequels do as well as the first. If she keeps playing her cards right, her star power will eventually trump everyone on this list. With only a few more sequels in the pipeline, the Twilight series is sort of winding down, and may not be much of a blip on the radar by the time the Avatar sequels are released. At this point in time, Kristin Stewart is the only one on the cover that really compares to Zöe when we speak of up and coming. Stewart is of a younger generation though. I don't feel Kristin has as much acting range as most of the actresses on the cover. I'm sure she's got time though. I'm not hating on any of the ladies on the cover by the way. I actually liked most of them in various films.

aren't any actresses of color there. I mean, if they didn't want to go with Gabby and/or Zoe (though I don't see why they wouldn't), they surely could have went with someone like Keke Palmer, or hell, Paula Patton... America Ferrera... Naturi Naughton... there's really no justification for this at all...

you can forget that shit. she won't be the lead in a film ever again, prolly.

this cover for normally for young bitches and zoe ain't hardly in her 20s no more. i think cornish is the oldest at 26. PLUS, zoe and america ferrera were on the '08 young hollywood issue...they were inside flap like a muhfucka, but you could call that "the cover."

now, as for SOLUTIONS...they COULDA put...well, i dunno, BECAUSE THAT'S THE WHOLE FUCKIN POINT...outside of tyler perry, who is CONSISTENTLY giving young black actresses some damn work? if more black filmmakers were as ambitious and hard-working and prolific as tyler dogg, we wouldn't be having this conversation. meagan goode would be on the cover. jurnee smollett. keisha knight pulliam. all that. these white bitches on the radar because they got EXPOSURE and the only person giving black folks regular exposure in flicks these days is who?

yeah, so this is all about tyler perry. niggas need to stop being bitches and support him or shit like THIS will keep happening.

i can't believe we got the same hankyhead ass niggas who hate on tyler in here whining about no young black actress on the cover of them white folks' mag and not seeing the CONNECTION between the nigga they shun and the white approval they seek for their fave black actors and actresses.

but, gaby is talented, and she IS doing tv: she's starring opposite laura linney in her Showtime show called The C-Word (i think its going to series) and she's got some roles in some upcoming indies...

so who knows...but her being the lead in a movie? i don't think so...i mean, if established black actresses like Angela Bassett, Thandie Newton, Kimberly Elise, Halle Berry and the like don't be popping up in lead roles in films every year, then Gaby is DEFINITELY NOT....

Plus NOT NARY ONE of them broads done ANYTHING remotely close to the numbers Zoe did in 2009 (not even Kristen Stewart), if we're saying that's what "doing shit" means

I see that the goalposts keep changing ("She Old!" "She ain't done shit of note!"), so fuck it, I'm done yo

both were in the 2008 issue...WITH ZOE.

both will NEVER AGAIN be featured in the NEW hollywood issue. know why? because it lessens (dunno if that's quite the word i'm lookin for, but fuck it) their brand, just like zoe, being 31 and featured in that particular issue AGAIN, would lessen her brand. it's like fuckin phillip rivers or ovie or f-rod being featured in ESPN's "NEXT" issue. it don't even make fuckin sense. no more being referred to as "up and coming" or "new" or "next wave"...whatever the fuck. that part of zoe's career is OVER, NIGGA!!! GOTDAMN!!! and you'd be a fuckin SHITTY rep for her to be lobbying for that kinda coverage, given the year she's had. like i said, zoe will be in the regular VF HOLLYWOOD ISSUE WITH STREEP, CLOONEY, WINSLET, PENN AND ALL THE BIG TIME A-LIST MUHFUCKAS, with a nice lil' full-page photo and her title will be some shit like "The Hope for Hankyhead Blacks"...you know how they do.

i understand WANTING a black face in that issue, BUT NONE QUALIFY. nigga, not a one. some fuckin jurnee smollett. nigga, if i was hillary duff's rep and jurnee fuckin smollett made it, i'd get VF's editor on the phone and my first word would be "NOOOOPE!"

and i SEEK racism. actively. we all know this. so i'm not dismissing the issue. but, let's DEAL with the WHY *NOW*.

and the sad thing is you KNOW you wrong, but because it's ME, you gotta have your fucked up pride gettin in the way and shit. this shit is stupid.

You want to heal on some real shit? stop thinking that what a few people on a magazine editorial board thinks or does, represents the mindset of all white people.

this mass grouping is the kind of mentality is the real problem and which will keep all of us running in circles....now that right there is the REAL race issue!

It would be discriminating if they gave preference to others based on something she had no control over.

It's not a government job, it's a private magazine. They can put whoever they want on the cover. They have every right to only want hot women on the cover of their magazine if they think it'll help their sales. Morbid obesity just ain't hot.

I mean she's not as bad as Julia Stiles, Mena Suvari, & Kirsten Dunce. But it's funny she audtioned for 1 of the hot chics in The House Bunny & got cast as one of the nerds instead.

I liked Zombieland but it would've been better either without the girls altogether or some actresses that could've played those parts better.

She also doesn't really have a role to fill IMO. If you're going action, you'll cast Radha Mitchell over her. She's 31 and getting too old for the kiddie roles and looks too young for most dramatic roles (most of which probably go to Amy Adams).

I think she's one of those actresses that could slip through the cracks. She should probably go to TV to find a good role (ala Rose Byrne who kind of has similar issues).

I still don't get her appeal either. I've only seen her in Phone Booth, Man on Fire & the Melinda's & haven't been impressed yet. Didn't Drag me to hell have a lot of action in it?

Yeah I don't know if she really fits a niche at the moment

Good call there. I like Rose a lot too. I'll have to check out Damages at some point.

Yeah, Radha Mitchell is one of those women that I know of but I can never remember what movies she's been in (except for Silent Hill. I have no idea why I've watched that movie twice). Although the person I'm really stunned about is Malin Ackerman; I really don't get why she's getting such a push (although I have heard that she's really nice so maybe people are rooting for her or something).

Drag Me to Hell was a horror film and Lohman was good in it but it's not like horror films take a ton of chops to pull off. She needs to get herself into a comedy. It seems like she'd be a good straight woman to play off someone crazier.

It's probably my favorite magazine. No one covers Finance and Hollywood better from a human perspective IMHOP. last month's issues story about the making of Ishtar was great insight to how such a bomb could happen.

However, this is some BS. I saw the cover and had an immediate gut reaction. I wonder what percentage of people look at this and aren't struck by the lack of diversity?

That's why tokenism counts. Tokenism is a way of saying, there is a type of world that we would like too see and here is our contribution to that world. And like its been point out, they didn't have to search that hard because Zoe Salady has had the last couple of years any actress, of any color, would envy. (Side Note: I ain't mad at them for leaving the Precious chick off the cover).

If they didn't opt for Tokenism then their could have been a story or an editor's note about the lack of diversity in young hollywood. Give us something acknowledging the problem because its very real thing and VF could have used it as an opportunity to point out the problem. Otherwise, they are part of the problem.

BTW, compare this to when VF sponsored a shoot of every major Black Supermodel http://chicsrockcharms.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/anne-leibovitz-black-models-2001.jpg.

It's an amazing picture, too bad it couldn't earn the cover and they buried it in the magazine.

There isn't one

And one more time, the issue is "A New Hollywood," not "Young Hollywood," as you claimed

They're not the same

just shows how tight you're holding on to your weak point..."new" vs. "young"...really?

nd if you're asking me to show you were it's WRITTEN that the issue MUST ONLY feature actors under 30, when it's EXPLICITY SHOWN FOR YOU YEAR AFTER YEAR, then fuck it...i win.

the following omissions:

America Ferrera, 25
Keke Palmer, 16
Jurnee Smollett, 23
Keshia Fucking Knight Pulliam, 30

Go ahead. I'll wait.

Also, just because it's never been done with a bitch over 30 don't mean they shouldn't have done it this year. There's no fucking hard and fast Vanity Fair rule that says that they MUST keep the girls under 30 each and every fuckin' year. But whatever, right, they do it all the time, it's visually obvious, and anyway she did two things of note but "she old." Cool.

you named and the girls in the article

>America Ferrera, 25 (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1065229/) - should have been there
>Keke Palmer, 16 (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1551130/) - maybe should have been in
>Jurnee Smollett, 23 (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0810619/) - not working, not getting buzz
>Keshia Fucking Knight Pulliam, 30 (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0700443/) - not woking, not getting buzz

Abbie Cornish (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0180411/)
Rebecca Hall (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0356017/)
Anna Kendrick (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0447695/)
Carey Mulligan (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1659547/)
Amanda Seyfried (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1086543/)
Kristen Stewart (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0829576/)
Emma Stone (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1297015/)
Mia Wasikowska (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1985859/)
Evan Rachel Wood (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0939697/)

so go through and compare the list. these are all actress that are currently "hot" in hollywoods eyes. yes, i admit, the cover is very racist. the bigger problem is that more non-white woman aren't considered hot and up for parts. yes zoe had a monster year and could have been there. fine. i give you that.
the bigger problem is that we are scrambling to put together 4 or 5 non-white woman while these 9 are working and could have been easily named. that to me is the bigger issue, esp considering 2 of the girls (zoe and america) have been on the cover before. so we are saying we are ok with not having no more new faces getting constant work in hollywood?

wasn't in shit in 2009. was in the 2008 issue, as i previously stated, because she had sisterhood and that under the moon shit, which she got MAJOR AWARD ***BUZZ*** for...because ***BUZZ*** is the entire point of this fuckin issue.

>Keke Palmer, 16

her only project of note in 09 was a TP joint, which bring us back to my orginal point...TYLER PERRY. if niggas actually RESPECTED his work and didn't throw so much salt on his shit that EW actually writes whole stories dedicted to shitting on him, MAYBE the actors that appear in his MONEY-MAKING HIT FILMS would get some fucking respect...maybe they'd get the right ***BUZZ***. because as it stands, THE MERE THOUGHT of a black actor getting love from the mainstream media for their work in a tyler perry film is A FUCKING JOKE...and the reason it's A FUCKING JOKE is ***NOT*** because of REAL NIGGAS LIKE ***ME***...it's because of those other STUPID FUCKIN SELF-DEFEATING NO-BIG-PICTURE-SEEING REACTIONIST SONNY CORLEONE ASS NIGGERS. the same niggers i been tryna convince for YEARS to support tyler. or at least NOT ***PASSIONATELY*** HATE ON FOR NO GOTDAMN REASON!!! or at the ***VERY LEAST*** hate him like you hate bad white filmmakers...say your peace and move on. but noooooooooooooooooo...niggers hate so much, white folks pick up on it and realize "WE DON'T HAVE TO RESPECT HIS FILMS OR HIS ACTORS...AT ALL!!!!"

the star's breaking down the next big thing covers...

cause let's be real..yea all those actresses are on the cover. but, how many of them will go on to have careers ala Streep, Blanchett, etc.

Abbie Cornish, Carey Mulligan do. Zoey does...the others? nope

so yea, they rarely feature black actresses/women of color but why strive for that?

i don't think folk should really...

Tokenism...an editor's note...

people of color on the cover as some kind of cosmetic gesture?...

It wouldn't be honest...and basically insulting our intelligence.

It is insane/sad/pathetic to look to VF to acknowledge/praise/recognize actors of color.

Are we that desperate for their acceptance that we can't see that?

I don't know if I was being thrown into the accusing people of "seeking validation from whitey" camp, but...

I was referring to Vanity Fair, and I don't think the magazine is synonymous w/white people. I do believe however, that their target demographic is predominately white. So, it stands to reason that their covers will cater to that audience. It's a business, man.

That magazine isn't intended to, nor should it be expected to, demonstrate knowledge of different "shades" of talent. Did I mention that you're talking about Vanity Fair? Which VF have you been reading over the past decade that frequently puts people of different shades on the cover?

The opening post clearly put race on the table--it was an appeal, I assume in jest to some degree, to use this terrible VF snub against actors of color as a chance for racial healing. I can see being irritated...disappointed...maybe for a minute or two...

But then, something should click in your head, "Waitaminute, this is Vanity Fair!" If you want them to respect artists of a different shade, i.e. pander, that's fine. I think you might just want to pick up a different magazine.

Or better yet, keep demanding that VF step up their game...that's the more reasonable option. Better yet, all of its subscribers of color should boycott the magazine, and not stand for this disrespect...once they see that drop in revenue, they'll dedicate an issue/cover to color in Hollywood.

The Meryl Streep issue had an article on "wicked step-mothers"

The Pattinson issue devoted space to the Stephanie Seymour divorce (yawn)

A few months back there was a lengthy article on some all-girls prep school in CT.

Seriously, save for some financial articles and the occasional snarky Hitchens piece, you can't really take VF seriously anymore.

A lot of times it seems like they are just trying to recreate an ultra-waspy, upper-crust, new england blue-blood mystique.

finding credible white actresses, they probably had a harder time finding actresses of color.

Seriously all you see are these reality stars and none of them deserve any cover, except for the tabloids.

Freida Pinto is the only blatant exclusion I see.

In a field where image is everything G. Sidibe is not an ideal choice for a cover. While her accomplishments and skills are commendable, her image is one that black women in Hollywood have been trying to get away from. She looks like a maid, she lacks sex appeal etc and that is what black women in Hollywood are trying to get away from. The mammy image. She would have set them back 50 years by appearing on that cover.

Was Gabourey Sidibe's skin lightened for the cover of ELLE?

by Jennifer Romolini, Shine staff

In the world of American fashion magazines, women of color have notoriously been underrepresented, pretty much since the birth of print. Ditto the plus-size population, who go almost entirely absent from the pages of big-name publications, as if they don't exist. So it was a boon for both groups this summer when ELLE magazine announced that full-figured African-American actress Gabourey Sidibe would grace the cover of its 25th anniversary issue.

For its special October edition, ELLE produced four separate covers, each one meant to celebrate a different mid-20's female star--in addition to Sidibe, 27, it included actresses Amanda Seyfried and Megan Fox and reality star/fashion entrepreneur Lauren Conrad. But here's where things got tricky:

While each of the other three (all oft-used, not to mention skinny and Caucasian) cover girls are shown off in full-body glamour shots wearing stylish clothes, Sidibe is cropped at the mid-chest, with a swath of ruched green fabric hiding her curvy frame. Plus, her skin appears to be lighter than in most photos of the actress we've seen, which has stirred reactions on the Web.

This is the first big fashion magazine cover for Sidibe, who became famous last year after an Oscar-nominated turn as an abused teen in the Oprah-backed film "Precious." Since then, she's received raves for her appearance on "Saturday Night Live" and a new role in the Showtime drama "The Big C." Similar claims about skin lightening were made in 2008 about the possible whitening of Beyonce's face for a L'Oréal Paris ad and in 2009 for an ad with Indian actress Freida Pinto.

For their part, the folks at ELLE deny any dramatic lightening or retouching of their cover girl. They sent us the following statement via email: "Nothing out of the ordinary was done. We have four separate covers this month and Gabby's cover was not retouched any more or less than the others. We had 25 cover-worthy subjects in our portfolio and we chose Gabby because of who she is. We shot this as a story of exuberant young women changing the world. If you take a look at the portfolio, each of the women were shot in different ways and for different reasons."

Hmmm. The images are above. You be the judge.

Black people crying racism for the wrong reason.

Yes, i wish there were more staring, mainstream roles for black men and women. We need more brothers and sisters in the top studios positions, more black writers and so on to make that happen. It's sad that Spike and Perry are the only people we can look to (occasionally Oprah as well).

All these girls (with the exception of Emma Stone and Kendrick imo) should be on the cover. All of them are blowing up and are proving themselves to be great actors.

Zoe was already on the magazine and I don't think she really hurting for publicity after Avatar. She'll be fine without having a new Vanity Fair.

Honestly, I think Sidibe is a one hit wonder with 'Precious' and I don't see her doing much of anything note worthy in her future films. Probably TV but not films.

If we have Will Smith, Denzel, Spike, Tyler Perry,Oprah, Don Cheadle, etc. directing, producing, and writing there will be greater chances for black actors to get the opportunities to shine and show their range. There needs to be a giant upheaval in enthusiasm and support for the black filmmakers for it to happen. If that doesn't happen, then this post will continually be made every year and we'll get the occasional Denzel, Halle, Don and most recently Anthony Mackie and Zoe Zaldana, two actors that many black actors should take notes from.
