Personally, I'd have put Star Trek on there. It's nice more than 5 critical darlings are getting some shine, but we all know it really comes down to Avatar, Hurt Locker, and Inglourious Basterds. I really don't think anything else has a shot in the Picture race.

I ain't trying to hear it, there's no way that movie was inferior to The Blind Side, even if it was directed by that "hack" Abrams, written by Kurtzman and Orci, and had the "annoying" lens flares...

... and Rockwell got robbed for his performance in Moon as well

number one, the whole rugby story is like the 17th most interesting thing that's ever happened to nelson mandela. there are bigger and better stories within his own life to tell.

number two, the 30-minute rugby scene in act 3 brought whatever momentum the film had to a grinding halt. i mean, i love clint eastwood, but edit much?

clint eastwood, matt damon, morgan freeman, and nelson mandela are four of my favorite people in the world, but this just didn't come together. i'm glad it didn't get a nod.

In response to Reply # 90

And of course my problem with the Big Rugby Game was that I couldn't understand what was going on; yeah, it's sort of a given that South Africa's going to win, but it would have been nice to get some kind of rundown of the rules and the scoring...

I love Mo Dogg, but his accent kept slipping, and there's just no way he was made up to resemble Nelson Mandela in any convincing fashion... and Matt Damon got nominated for the WRONG movie... the women were cute, however, so it had that going for it, but that's about it...

In response to Reply # 120

especially considering, like you said, you already figure south africa's gonna win. also considering nothing was going on in or during the game other than the game. one team scores, the other team scores. so what? even in bad sports movies, there's usually something moving the narrative along during the big game. some teammates learn to get along or something. there was literally nothing going on for 30 minutes. it's like they cut away from the movie to show an entire rugby match. and the whole movie itself was like they cut away from the interesting parts of mandela's life (prison, politics, family, etc.) to focus on this rugby story.

I'm glad "A Serious Man" got the best pic. and original screenplay nomination. I don't expect it (or really think it should) win either category, but I'm happy it got some love.

I'm also happy "In the Loop" got the screenplay nomination. I wasn't aware it was an adaptation. I'd love to see it win.

I'm a little sad that the homie Scott Neustadter didn't get a nomination for "500 Days." Ah well, he's getting a lot of work these days, and he may well be back.

Finally, I really need to get around to seeing "Hurt Locker" and "An Education."

really, REALLY glad to see district 9 get a best picture nod. it would have made my short list of five. i also think sharlto copley (main character in d9) should have gotten a best actor nod over george clooney playing george clooney. somebody above already said star trek got robbed. i haven't seen the blind side yet so i can't speak on that, but i do know up in the air is the most mediocre romantic comedy to catch fire during awards season in decades.

For many reasons. In no way shape or form do I think (500) Days was better than Inglorious Basterds. I pretty much can't stand Tarantino and I was really impressed by that film. Even based purely on scope and ambition. C'mon man tell me you are finding a way to stick up for the last 20mins of (500) Days. That park bench scene was the most contrived set-up maybe I've ever seen in a movie...

Acting ones aren't a surprise, I'll have to check out Julie and Julia though. People who saw it, did the GOAT get a nomination on name alone or is her performance really that good?

I'm SO pleased about the A Serious Man, District 9, and In The Loop nominations.

The only movies with multiple nods I haven't seen are The Messenger, The Last Station, and The White Ribbon. We haven't talked about these three much on the board... anyone care to chime in?

Harry Potter 6 getting a Cinematography nod is VERY deserved. Too bad it has zero shot with Avatar in the same category. Also deserved is District 9 for Best Visual Effects.

Biggest bullshit? No Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs for Best Animated Picture, (500) Days of Summer being shut out entirely, and though it was a longshot, no Matt Damon for The Informant!.

A nomination for Samantha Morton (say over Vera Farmiga) woulda been nice, but Woody's to-be-expected nom and the justice served in the best original screenplay category is great (look at the quality of those five films--strongest category?).

Good look @ In The Loop.

Matt Damon for The Informant was, I thought, one of my more realistic wishes. Bridges, Clooney, Firth, and Freeman were probably locks though, and I can't really be mad at the Jeremy Renner pick. Not one of the five strongest performances in my mind but not underserved either. (Was Anthony Mackie for supporting actor too unrealistic?)

Is conventional wisdom that Avatar wins every technical award it's nominated for?

Anyone see The Last Station? The trailer makes it look like it has a sense of humor. Accurate?

Now if Netflix will stop messing around and send me Inglourious Basterds, I'll be doing better on seeing what I need to see.

They nominated the lesser two of the four eligible Princess and the Frog songs ("Ma Belle Evangeline" is my favorite song, movie or otherwise, period of 2009, and I liked Ne-Yo's end credits song), and I'm not familiar with the other three nominees.

It's a terrific song, holds a LOT of weight in the film, and it's got that T-Bone Burnett magic touch.

The worst I saw was the scene where Precious first comes to the school nad meets Cornrows.

The editing overall is acceptable, but it wasn't really anything I'd consider Oscar worthy.

I'd say in ranking the best of each category I saw this year, I see a large number of my list on this list.

I agree that I saw very very few 4-star films this year.

That's why I call it underwhelming, since I can't really describe it as anything more glowing than solid. When 4 or 5 of the best 15 films I saw this year were animated, that (a) speaks strongly about the advancement of animation's storytelling prowess by more than just the usual suspects, and (b) speaks not as strongly of the live-action cinema 2009 had to offer.

What would your 4-star films have been this year?

The films I loved that I saw in 2009 are ineligible - 35 Shots of Rum; The Secret of the Grain; Revanche; Still Walking; Hold Me Tight, Let Me Go; Wendy and Lucy; Sugar; Me and Orson Welles. I'd call of them great except for Me and Orson Welles. 2 great films that I can't say that I love are Hunger and Munyurangabo.

Even taking those out of the picture, I'd still call 2009 a good year because I think there was a bunch of good films.

For me I'd add Gomorrah and Summer Hours. Where the Wild Things was also up there for me and that got zero love anywhere in any category. I figured at least Karen O would win something...

In response to Reply # 0

With all the noms The Piano got in 94, I figured a return by the same director to a period piece, which the Academy likes, would have garnered more nods. Maybe with a bigger distributor things would've been different. (Who makes awards marketing decisions - the distributor or production company?) A shame for Abbie Cornish who gave a great performance. I would swap either An Education for Bright Star for Best Pic, Mulligan for Cornish for Actress, and Nine for Bright Star for art direction. This year would've been great for voters to play politics having 2 female directors up for Best Director and 3 films by women directors up for Best Pic.

Second biggest surprise is An Education's You've Got Me Wrapped Around Your Little Finger not getting nominated.

Biggest acting snub since, off the top, Jeff Bridges for Door in the Floor that had no shot is Tilda Swinton's lead performance in Julia.

I feel it lessens the prestige of being nominated for best picture when you now share that distinction with films like The Blind Side. And now animated films will get pity nods instead of deserved ones.

Given I haven't seen a number of them, but I agree:

Avatar

Stupid action film, but enjoyable. In a good year wouldn't be considered, this year I think it's a banker.

The Blind Side

Not seen

District 9

I enjoyed it in a "it's different" kind of way. But parts were terrible, and overall it shouldn't even be on a top 50.

An Education

Boring

The Hurt Locker

Perhaps the most overrated movie of the past 10 years.

Inglourious Basterds

Fun. Not a usual Oscar nominee, but I can accept.

Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire

Not seen

A Serious Man

Fairly indie for Oscars, but pretty good.

Up

Not even close to Pixar's best.

Up in the Air

Not seen.

Ok I've missed quite a bit, but it's not exactly awe-inspiring. Not one of them am I considering for my best of 00's list.

cause that might have wiped out, like, the next 100 years of the academy's credibility (if crash didn't do it already). i still think extending the list to 10 is too many and they should've just focused on getting the 5 right, but i'm not mad at the list they chose this year. at some point though, a hangover-caliber movie is gonna sneak through, at which point they'll cut the nominations for the next year down to 7.

I guess it was positioned too early in the year, so it wasn't fresh on the voters' minds either.

But that was the best picture I saw this year. And you're right, the actors deserved some notice too.

White Ribbon got nominated for best foreign. Nice! I'm rooting for that big time (although haven't seen A Prophet yet). Didn't expect that at all, and fully deserved. Actually that's about the only nomination I strongly support.

Edit: No it isn't. Il Divo for best makeup! Didn't notice anything about the makeup, just wanna see the film get some props. In fact I can't believe it wasn't nominated for best foreign as well.

Saw A Prophet last night, holy shit! That was one of the best films I've seen for YEARS. Wait I'm gonna make a whole thread for it. But I'd say it should be a shoe in for best international. In fact it's a real shame the Oscar judges are such dicks and are too scared to put foreign language films in the running. This is good enough for best picture.

I agree. Minus Brad Pitt's embarrassment of a performance this is QT's best film (outside of True Romance which he only wrote). All of his ultra-annoying quirks are subtracted and you just get pure cinema. Some of those scenes (opening, bar) are HOF-ers. And as a screenwriter you can tell that he spent ALOT of time with this script to come up with all of those details. Very well written and thought out.

if your movie hasn't been at least somewhat widely seen, there's a really good chance it wasn't the year's best picture. sometimes the academy unearths some gems that audiences overlooked, but more often than not we just get mediocre oscar bait like 'an education' that nobody's seen and for a good reason. what i'm saying is that there's a reason hurt locker only made $12 mil its entire run. it never found an audience because it's not the best picture of the year.

this is a spinoff of post #109 ("if your movie hasn't been at least somewhat widely seen, there's a really good chance it wasn't the year's best picture"). i think any movie that can't make $25 mil in its entire run should be looked at by the academy with extreme prejudice, barring extenuating circumstances (very late or very limited release, very niche subject matter, etc).

by the way, the last best picture winner to make less than $50 million was the last emperor in 1987 ($43.9 mil). before that, it was the deer hunter in 1978 ($49.0 mil). the point of this post is that the hurt locker is not the best picture of the year and an education is just wasting a spot.

1. Avatar - $598.5 million
2. Up - $293.0 million
3. The Blind Side - $238.1 million
4. Inglourious Basterds - $120.5 million
5. District 9 - $115.6 million
6. Up in the Air - $73.5 million
7. Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire - $45.5 million
8. The Hurt Locker - $12.6 million
9. A Serious Man - $9.2 million
10. An Education - $8.8 million

In the post-Crash world, I think screeners are going to dictate a winner more than ever before (screeners + internet hype = Academy momentum and then likely box office).

Slumdog Millionaire wasn't a huge hit before it starting picking up SERIOUS steam (IIRC), and Crash did okay but not until it picked up a lot of buzz with the genius campaign of waiting until it was on DVD to send it out to voters (something IB did this year...reducing cost yet still getting as much voting traction).

I think it's a 3 way race, and Avatar is leading right now.

It would take anti-Avatar backlash, little-movie backlash, and QT backlash for it to win... but it's made 75 million, has a star in it, is about timely subject matter, and has the slimmest of outside chances to sneak up.

Plus, with 10 nominees and a somewhat new system of how people will vote this time around, we're all basically pissing in the wind trying to figure this one out this year.

Behind Avatar and Hurt Locker. If those two split the votes enough, and there's a big enough Cameron-backlash, it has a chnace of winning.

I did like Avatar better though. Haven't seen "Hurt Locker" yet.

1.) Amelia - LOL...that shit looked like undeniable Oscar fare when the trailer came out. Several months later, it's fallen off the face of the Earth. Hilary Swank looked a lil too cartoonish, which is always a risk with biopics. Ewan McGregor is slowly becoming a pox on your project.

2.) Nine - I also thought this was a sure bet for an Oscar nod pre-release. Daniel Day, Kidman, Dench, Cruz...and a musical? I haven't seen it, but I wonder what happened there. Maybe one of y'all can fill me in.

3.) 9 - I haven't seen this one either, but it was getting metioned in the same breath as Wall-E. Then no best animated nod.

4.) The Time Traveler's Wife - I might be on an island with this one, but it was one of the best movies I've seen this last Oscars cycle. In past years, I wouldn't consider it the kinda movie that the academy would cosign. But given some of the noms this year in best picture category, I don't see how those were better films than this one. Eric Bana put together a very solid year, IMO. This, Star Trek, and his role in Funny People...all memorable appearances. I feel like there's a GREAT role floating around out there for him that he'll meet up with soon.

5.) Moon - If you didn't think that was one of the best performances of the year, male or female, I don't know what to tell you.
