"Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011, Bird)"

http://www.whiteblog.net/mission-impossible-4-ghost-protocol-le-premier-trailer-en-exclu

After watching the French trailer, I'm intrigued. Word is that the Paramount execs are very happy with this. Also, it's been said that film has some of the craziest sequences of the series so far. And a good portion of this is filmed in IMAX.

With all that said where Ving's Luther at? (He's in the movie). And the title still sucks.

I can't get the one in this post to play but the one I saw last night looked pretty good towards the end at least. I had the glasses on thinking it was going to be in 3D at the start and the editing was cut to quick to tell what was going on before they slowed things down a bit.

dude is better at it than Bay.
He might even be able to do action on par with 90s Cameron or Jon Woo.
But no, he wants to make viral mythology thrillers.

in major role yet. He played did play the douche bag role well in Hurt Locker and The Town. Will be interesting to see how he does in MI, The Avengers as Hawkeye, and The Bourne Legacy... He won't be able to say he didn't have his chance if he can't pull it off.

Blandest franchise out there. Blah hero. Forgettable villains.

I'm rooting for Brad Bird and Chris McQuarrie but nothing in this trailer looked all that new or made me think that any new life was going to be added into it.

The 2nd had dumb action scene after dumb action scene. The 3rd was very bland. Like nothing really stood out save for a couple parts. This one looks to be a combo of all three. I'm still interested tho.

I think this was the 1st flick I saw her in & then Kiss Kiss Bang Banng shortly after that. My immediate thought was both movies would've been better with another actress Gone Baby Gone gave me the same feeling afterwards. Can't blame her for the disaster that was Eagle Eye but I haven't been in a rush to check out Source Code ever since.

First off it's opening the same day as Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Sherlock Holmes and Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-Wrecked have JUST opened and later that week Tintin and We Bought a Zoo open.

They should really push this back to open the week right before The Avengers drops just like Fast Five dropped right before Thor.

Here are two good articles on why it should move the date:
http://boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=3083&p=.htm

http://boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=3227&p=.htm

To be honest if it wasn't for BB directing and the fact 25 minutes of this will be in the IMAX format, I'd wait till January to see it do to all the other blockbusters coming out and the Oscar flicks. With that said, I hope it's good and I'm still looking forward to it.

First installment Larry Mullen Jr & Adam Clayton of U2 did theme:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wkeo4rprvEI
Apparently there's four versions of this a remix done by them and then another three remixes done by house acts:http://www.amazon.com/Theme-Mission-Impossible-Larry-Mullen/dp/B00000E5GV

Second installment. Limp Bizkit:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPD6YiBFG1Q

Third installment. Kanye (plays over the credits at the tail end).
He also did this joint for the movie:

It was exactly what I thought it would be, so I thought it was a lot of fun

If you're not a fan of CROOZE, or of the "Hack" producer, or of Paula Patton (who is as fine as she wanna be), or you want to be a grumpy mouth breather and nitpick the technology, then please feel free to stay at home

The Dubai sequence with CROOZE climbing the windows was stunning in IMAX; a great, thrilling use of the technology

And let's be clear, you're going to be asked to buy a great deal of stuff

Of course I did, so I liked what I saw

Pegg brought the funny, Renner brought some grit, and CROOZE brought tha CROOZE. Damn y'all's hate, the old dude still got it

CROOZE WAS HIGH-STEPPIN' LIKE ROGER CRAIG IN THE SUPER BOWL... in IMAX

Don't make me type that again

My only complaint was that the main villain was so... ordinary... coming off the heels of Phillip Seymour Hoffman in M:I:III, I thought he needed to be a lot more dangerous

But whatever, man. Just go see this shit in IMAX, marvel at the goddamn building climb, and watch CROOZE do his thing for y'all one more time...

The building climb was awesome

Paula Pattwotons of rack was ravishing

Pegg's a pretty good sidekick

Thought MC Ren would steal more scenes but they held him back a bit for the sake of character development. Hopefully they'll unleash him in the next one

Good film throughly entertained seeing this at a REAL IMAX theater is the only way to watch it. Brad Bird did his thing. I got a couple problems with it but overall solid. The first is still untouchable.

looked great in IMAX. Cruise is Cruise. the Kremlin and Burj Khalifa missions are M:I at its best. there's a couple really clever gadgets, as always.

but.

it lacked the tension from the first and third movies. villain was really unremarkable (why did he have to pose as his underling during the codes exchange?); the worst of the series by far. Cruise's Russian buddy was a pretty lame plot device. outside that green dress, Paula Patton didn't add much of anything (her love back story was weak as hell) and there was a bit too much Simon Pegg. I like the guy, and he does have a few great lines, but in general I felt they overused him.

I was expecting Brad Bird to do a better job with character development, but really it's a more technically skilled film than emotionally intriguing one. which is fine for M:I...it's just missing that something that I and III had.

are there several scenes that take advantage of the IMAX viewing capabilities or just the bldg scene? What's the ratio of mundane dialog to actual ACTION sequences?

i would really like to watch dome dope SFX @ IMAX. the last movie i saw there was Superman 3D (which was underwhelming).

and you could REALLY tell the difference from a real IMAX, like the IMAX scenes only added about four feet to the top and bottom of the screen. I just hate that the only real IMAX theater where I could see it is like an hour from my house. The sound was great though.....

but keeping anything on my face for the long gives me headaches. as far as color distortion maybe it depends on what 3D system they use because all the glasses i've used darkens the picture and color way to much for my liking.

No real connection to any of the characters and it was a skeleton storyline that served just to provide another setting for an action sequence. Kind of dissapointing overall after how gritty and compelling part 3 was and a lot of that had to do with the absence of a prominent antagonist (particularly after PSH absolutely killed it in 3)...but in the end, I had fun watching some incredible scenes and technical achievement in gorgeous true IMAX.

other than the Mumbai bldg sequence NOTHING about this movie was fulfilling. Nothing.

where was the action ya'll speak of? the action sequences were borderline laughable to just plain boring. nothing new, nothing original or unique.

MI3 absolutely shits on this movie in every way imaginable and it's not even close. Abrams >>>>>> Bird. I'm fairly certain dude should stay in his CGI lane.

this shit was SLIGHTLY better than MI2 and not by much.

don't even get me started on the plot, dialog, characters, etc. there were so many dumb cliche moments i lost count. it's like the writers were like "oh, we need a gratuitous titty shot. ZOE, change clothes mid-scene while in the passenger seat!" ...or "oh, we need a melodramatic bonding moment between the characters to show that they're a team!" ... that last scene might have been one of the worst scenes in movie-making history.

how is this movie garnering such positive reviews by everyone? the best thing about it was the DKR prologue. and i'm being dead serious. that was the ONLY thing i remembered after leaving the theater.

and yes, I saw it @ a *real* IMAX. shit was a HUGE disappointment and I probably dozed off a minimum of 3 times.

I been trying to find ways to justify blowing $40 on this noxious pile of doodoo.

Not all the responses in here are full on positive. Ghost Protocol doesn't compare to part 1 or 3 for me because of some of the things that dude took issue with in terms of the one-dimensional characters and lacking plot. I found it all to be a very skeleton storyline that only served to provide yet another action scene(which were fantastic btw).

I know dude is a bit heavy with the hyperbole but the movie doesn't have much depth imo.

this isn't the movie I go to looking for depth and character development, I go to see exciting chases, kick ass fights, and shit blowing up. If there's some depth and character development, thats just an added bonus in my book. But I've been known to not really want a lot from my movies other than for it to entertain me, and on that count, Ghost Protocol exceeded my expectations.....

- the Burj Khalifa sequence is an all-timer. It is stunning in every way. Even knowing what was coming, I was holding my breath.

- the parking garage sequence is also so incredibly effective. The cutting between Renner fighting the guy, Pegg putting the computer back together, and Cruise and Cobalt battling is just... it's great. It's the way action should be filmed and edited.

- yeah, there's contrived plot stuff, but I found the lack of a love story for Cruise was actually a breath of fresh air. He really didn't have personal stakes-- he was being a hero for non-friends-or-family reasons.

- so many BMWs in this film.

- the football field shot in the Dark Knight trailer is awful. But the Bane line-- "When Gotham is ashes, you will have permission to die"-- is pretty badass as far as bad guy lines go.

IMAX.

Trust that I was salty as SHIT when the movie started and I hadn't seen a 7 minute Dark Knight preview yet, I mean the only reason I WENT to this movie (3 three off the "strength" of 2) was that preview to be honest, I figured an entertaining popcorn flick like the Metacritic blurbs were saying would be a great bonus, but I looked at the movie as a bonus going in.

Anyway, suspend all matters of disbelief, saltiness and general adjustment time for an action comedy rather than an action drama and I thought this was a great movie to go see in theaters. I think it'd lose its luster on home viewing (granted I own a $400 CRT from 2003) but as far as a spectacular theater experience it was more than satisfying. I wasn't really into the sandstorm chase but the Khalifa had me on the edge of my seat.

THe third thing I took away from this movie since I can't remember seeing any of Paula Patton before, just hearing her legend via Thicke fans, is she's way more physically intimidating than any woman I've seen on film in a long time. She just looks like the kind of girl 1% of the male population could handle.

I was mostly impressed by the gadgets. Pegg was funny and added some desperation to their situation. Patton was just eye candy but she was very good at that. Renner was okay, but I liked him better when u thought he was just an analyst.

Like most of these movies, I won't remember or care about it by the time the next one comes out tho'

I really wasn't all that juiced about seeing this but the fam wanted to go to a movie on Christmas day so I figured we would do something a little different and go to our local IMAX. I was even less crazy about paying $16 x 4 but damn that shit was worth every penny. I guess it would have been ok on a normal screen but whoever said IMAX makes it was dead on. Those helicopter shots made me feel like I was on Disney's Soarin Over California ride. I've seen some 3D shorts in real IMAX before but this was the first 'real' movie... shit was great.

The action was good, but not great and the movie lacked an emotional heart. Nobody in his crew was as compelling as Vingh Rhames and the villain was mad generic.

Brad Bird did a lot with very little to work with. He gets props, but overall, this was a let down.

they dropped the ethan dating someone/has a romance subplot...

that was the worst thing about the MI movies...the romantic subplots were pointless because, let's keep it real, Tom Cruise has ZERO chemistry with ANY WOMAN he's paired up against...

Thandie Newton
Michelle Monaghan
Emmanuelle Beart (though not really in MI:1)

how can any man *NOT* have feasible chemistry with the above women?

Cruise didn't and it showed.

so i'm glad Jane (Paula Patton) was JUST an IMF Agent who was basically dealing with the death of her boyfriend (Josh Holloway...allright for MI:4 and Paramount pairing them up as a couple. I approved for real)...

and not trying to fuck Crooz's draws off and what not.

I really wished Ving Rhames was in MORE than just a couple scenes. I dug the chemistry he and Cruise had.

it was a decent movie...not horrible, but not oustanding either, with some nice action/stunt sequences.

sidenote: was it just me or did the villains (Michael Nyvquist(sp?) and Lea Seydoux, etc.) just really weak and lame this time around?

I mean, damn, paula patton dispatched seydoux's ass QUICKLY for seydoux to have been a contract killer, i would have expected a bit more than that...

same with Nyquist (sp?) and Cruise...but that was a good sequence though.

Yes, it's about the dissolved IMF

But it's really Ethan's story, because it was his team that got set up and eventually disavowed

Plus the new guy had ties to him and his presumed-dead wife

So I'm trying to figure out why it's bothersome that it's Ethan's story

Especially since the previous 3 movies haven't exactly been ensemble pieces

Key Word: no.

The focus of this franchise has always been Ethan Hunt. If that were not the case, then why does the first one start with the offing of his "team?" Why does the second and third ones focus on his love life, and not the love life of, say, Luther?

The focus of these films, even in the framework of a "team," has, was, and always will be Ethan Hunt.

This isn't Ocean's 14.

*Who* has given up? The writers, who were different writers from the third movie, who were different from the second movie, who were different from the first? Cmon.

No, they actually didn't. There's a reason why CROOZE's name is above everyone else's. There's a reason why the focus is ALWAYS on him, and HIS team.

hollywoodreporter.com:

>Why Are Critics Loving the Preposterous 'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol'? (Opinion)

It received a 93 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has made $250 million in two weeks but the film's plot is truly impossible and its character development nearly absent.

3:00 PM PST 12/30/2011 by Jay A. Fernandez

It’s got a 93 percent Rotten Tomatoes score. The critics — even Manohla!! — are fawning over it. Colleagues who routinely rip apart sequelized studio fare are describing it as “fun.” Worldwide audiences have forked over more than $250 million in two weeks. It’s starting to feel like a conspiracy of goodwill, and one that can only partially be ascribed to director Brad Bird’s well-earned fan base.
A non-comprehensive list of the problems with M:I 4 would include the following: Every beat of the story is preposterous. The set-ups are distractingly contrived. The main villain is lame and practically mute. Plus, his master plan is to start a nuclear war — wait for it — for the good of mankind. There are jarring bouts of physical comedy. Tom Cruise has absolutely no acting to do. The two minor character arcs are cocktail napkin sketches. A deadly assassin looks like she just stepped off a Milan runway. Etc.

First, lest you think I have some pre-emptive ulterior motive or grudge that could color my thoughts on this, you should know: I love Bird’s films (Iron Giant, The Incredibles, Ratatouille). I remain a supporter of Cruise. I happen to enjoy scenes where badass women throw down. And I simply can’t get enough of childish Indian stereotypes. Plus, my seven-year-old loved it.

But really, this movie is not good. Everyone involved could have made a better one, or at least tried harder to invest it with even a modicum of emotional heft or character development. Any great screenwriter will tell you that for action scenes to resonate, they have to tell us something about the character — here it seems the only point was to make sure audiences know that Cruise isn’t too old to hang off the side of something stupidly high.

Just to provide one example of the contrivances required to put the star in a stunt-ready situation: While inside Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, the IMF team discovers that Cruise’s Ethan Hunt can’t just break into the server room because, well, the security is too darn complicated. So he must scale the outside of the building in high winds with some sticky gloves and then cut a hole in the window in order to get them control of the elevators and such. He happens to have just the right equipment to do this, of course, despite the fact that it wasn’t planned. But he neglected to bring anything that would help him get back down, like, say, a rope, or a miniature helicopter piloted by his thoughts, or something.

The problem is that we’ve already seen the miracle work these people can pull off. The opening sequence is predicated on Simon Pegg’s tech whiz Benji being able to control electronically, and from afar, an entire Moscow prison, opening and closing cell-block doors wherever and whenever needed. For his next trick, Benji and Ethan break into the Kremlin no less, with only a fake mustache and a digital screen that happens to be a perfectly snug fit for a basement hallway. This also involves a gadget that breaks the code on a highly secure door in less than ten seconds. I guess someone left that device in a different jacket pocket when they left for Dubai.

So why does Cruise have to climb that giant freakin’ building again? It takes the viewer out of the movie it’s so ludicrous.

Then there’s the sequence where Jeremy Renner’s character has to put on a metal suit and be levitated by a remote-controlled magnet over to, uh, something to deactivate — or maybe reactivate — something else that has to do with a Soviet satellite. Why does he have to jump instead of climb down? And why can’t he walk down there? I’m honestly not sure.

The film does have a few novel tweaks: a chase through a sandstorm is pretty nifty and a complicated bait-and-switch involving nuclear codes and diamonds that requires the skills of the entire team provides some genuine tension. But that all this rigmarole revolves around nuclear codes in a black briefcase dampens the novelty of the enterprise. It had me thinking about War Games and Spies Like Us, two films that felt antiquated 20 years ago.

That the hero doesn’t even get the satisfaction of dispatching the villain is also an odd choice. And by the way, how does that live nuclear weapon get within 200 yards of slamming into San Francisco without any kind of response? Dick Cheney would never have let that happen.

Fans and filmmakers would say that none of this matters. Viewers are having fun, the box office is huge, so why complain? And they certainly have a point. But just because you don’t need to do something doesn’t mean you can’t. It just would have been a slightly more strenuous mission.

But that was one they declined to accept.

The whole premise of these flicks are some outrageous shit..even plot wise etc. And of course the plot lines are meant to give reason for a spectacular stunt. It's the MI trademark. I think doofus Fernandez thought he walked into Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

on some of those I agree, but the Burj thing was easy to buy (not so much them having the gloves handy, but the difficulty hacking the network) since they were just four people with limited equipment. I feel like Pegg even said something about not having satellite access or whatever it was he'd need to do it remotely

ever since spiderman 3 did that shit in 2007 I was in. Dark Knight(and to date, I have ONLY seen that move in its entirety on REAL IMAX screens) went ALL THE WAY IN cause it shot scenes with the cameras, and that opening bank robbery scene is so damn real, as is when he goes to japan to jack dude for the info.

IMAX can fucking make or break questionable movies, i personally enjoyed both S3 and dark knight, but transformers 2 was stupid as fuck, however, in IMAX those battle scenes in the woods??? WFWT

I just ran out to peep MI4 in a regular theater cause i had cabin fever but i fell asleep anyway early into it until all the explosions started coming, so i look forward to rewatching in REAL IMAX

Personally, I thought Fast Five was more fun.

..but i doubt that hollywood would grant that wish

don't get me wrong, its not that this movie didn't have its moments. still, even with the big action sequences, i was bored.

the visuals are always cool, the fireworks are always extra, and the leading lady is always sexy, but this was a bit of a snoozer for me.

- that openin' sequence had to be the worst of this entire series
- paula patton is quickly becomin' 'the pretty face who doth cry too much'
- they lost the comedic relief of ving rhames
- hollywood is runnin' out of bad guys

how the hell did they manage to NOT have paula show more skin? yes, i know that's sexist, but dammit, THAT'S WHAT BLOCKBUSTER ACTION FLICKS ARE FOR.

sex, drugs, guns, and more guns

anyway, the chase scenes were less than stellar and i was pretty much yawning...

..and miles to go before i sleep...
