Conan O’Brien Says He Won’t Do ‘Tonight Show’ Following Leno
By BILL CARTER

Conan O’Brien says he will not do “The Tonight Show” if it airs at 12:05 a.m. He released the following statement Tuesday afternoon:

People of Earth:

In the last few days, I’ve been getting a lot of sympathy calls, and I want to start by making it clear that no one should waste a second feeling sorry for me. For 17 years, I’ve been getting paid to do what I love most and, in a world with real problems, I’ve been absurdly lucky. That said, I’ve been suddenly put in a very public predicament and my bosses are demanding an immediate decision.

Six years ago, I signed a contract with NBC to take over The Tonight Show in June of 2009. Like a lot of us, I grew up watching Johnny Carson every night and the chance to one day sit in that chair has meant everything to me. I worked long and hard to get that opportunity, passed up far more lucrative offers, and since 2004 I have spent literally hundreds of hours thinking of ways to extend the franchise long into the future. It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule. Building a lasting audience at 11:30 is impossible without both.

But sadly, we were never given that chance. After only seven months, with my Tonight Show in its infancy, NBC has decided to react to their terrible difficulties in prime-time by making a change in their long-established late night schedule.

Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the Tonight Show to 12:05 to accommodate the Jay Leno Show at 11:35. For 60 years the Tonight Show has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn’t the Tonight Show. Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the Late Night show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy.

So it has come to this: I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of The Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet a time slot doesn’t matter. But with the Tonight Show, I believe nothing could matter more.

There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work.

Have a great day and, for the record, I am truly sorry about my hair; it’s always been that way.

Yours,

Conan

Didn't Leno lose consistently to Letterman in the early years before taking over in the time slot? It's basically saying the network execs were unwilling to be as patient with him as they were with Leno.

a half hour jay leno show at 11:35 was a terrible, horrendous idea, almost as bad as an hour-long leno show at 10:00. nbc has had six years to make a decision between jay and conan and couldn't do it, and their unparalleled indecisiveness rightfully crashed the network. conan just made the decision for them. good.

Positioned himself as actually caring about the Tonight Show so now Leno seems(or is?) the jerkoff who will lead to its downfall....and it's NBC's fault.

All the best to Conan....hopefully NBC will renege and give Conan what they fucking promised him.

In response to Reply # 14

would still have to be paid off even if he quit. they reported it at $80 mil. however if he left and went to another network, nbc would only have to pay the difference between his new network's contract and the the tonight show contract.

so either way, he's still going to get at least $80 mil, according to that report.

And if he's not does NBC pull the plug on the show ASAP?
If they don't does Conan just keep roasting NBC in his monologues until the Winter Olympics?

It'll be interesting to watch this play out.

then Leno could get all his old viewers back, and Conan and Letterman would split the Letterman viewers, further cementing Leno's 11:30 ratings lead. Conan's and Letterman's shows are more similar to each other than to Leno's, and together they carry the (for lack of a more polite word) witty demographic, but they'd be splitting what was already a minority share of the viewers.

Cool to see Dave just not give a fuck anymore. Conan is still fresh to this level of fame, Dave is a household name and knows it doesn't matter what he does anymore, so he just says whatever he wants.

So yea, Dave's are funnier because Conan still has to be kind of polite.

http://www.tmz.com/2010/01/12/the-tonight-show-with-jay-leno-take-two-nbc-conan-obrien-contract-deal-leaving-late-night-network-television-deal/

Jay Leno will get his one-hour show back, and it will be called "The Tonight Show".... sources tell TMZ.

We're told NBC honchos still have to sit down with Jay's rep and put the finishing touches on a new deal, but NBC has signed off on the plan if Conan O'Brien leaves ... and Conan has made it clear that he's leaving the network, and not on good terms.

O'Brien took several cheap shots at Leno in his blistering letter, denigrating Leno's show as a "comedy program."

Sources tell TMZ Jay and Conan have not spoken with each other since NBC announced the switch.

It's looking increasingly like Conan may be making a deal with Fox for a late night show from 11:00 PM to midnight.

I was pretty young during Carson's final years so I don't remember much, but I do remember staying up and watching and even then I would get pissed when Leno was guest hosting. Dave might be the only host that can come close to being in the same convo as Johnny though.

Post edit: he had a writer come out and say a few words.

Basically NBC was a pimp.
Jay was the downass ho (the old one)
Conan is the pretty ho.
Jimmy is the young ho.
And Carson is the freak ho.*

* sounded like he said freak, correct me if i'm wrong.

I thought I was following this story pretty closely. I'm trying to understand why everyone is pissed at Leno. I thought all of this shuffling was because of NBC. I dont recall seeing anywhere where Leno said he wanted his old time slot/show back.Sure its wrong and a serious fuck up,but why the hate towards him?

to Conan. Flash forward to 2009, and Jay started acting like he was being "forced out" despite the fact that he agreed to this. NBC got worried that Jay would go to Fox or ABC at 11:30, taking the white midwestern gramma viewership with him. So they made the incredibly foolish decision to excise their 10 p.m. drama development in favor of an hour of Jay.

Jay tanks, and Letterman starts thumping Conan in the ratings, leading NBC to panic. Rather than do the smart thing and just cut their losses with the Jay Leno show, you see what they did. Again, because they're worried Jay would go elsewhere.

That I know, but all of that is still NBC's doing. I still dont see how that is Leno's fault. I feel bad for Conan, but this is just bad decision making on NBC's part. Could it be that people are made a Leno because instead of just falling back, he is going alone with it and taking the show back. That I can understand.

for a lot of reasons obviously, but one of them being it undermined conan's new role.

And Letterman is ALLLRIGHT, but his top ten lists are so underwhelming, number one is NEVER the funniest.

Arsenio had a good thing for awhile and I connected with much better, obviously because of the target audience. the other two were just whatever.

I'm too young to speak on most of Johnny's time but didn't watch him at the end either.

We're talking about a late night entertainment/interview show, nothing heavy, but during a time where all the "good shows" are off, and most grown folks are either out/asleep. young and old people are prolly the biggest watchers. Not the easiest group to please.

With that said, Conan legitimately made me laugh hard as fuck on his show, which Letterman and Leno NEVER did. He should definitely have been given time to shine. I'll never be convinced otherwise that Leno benefited more from getting the "Tonight Show" on the network that it had been on, than anything he personally did or anything letterman didn't do.

I want Conan to get ALL his money and Jay to tank, although he prolly won't since he was there so long. I WONT BE WATCHING SO IDNGAF.

my "tonight show" consists of the true geniuses, stewart and colbert, who would SMOKE a tonight show, but are too good at what they do for me to ever want them to do something else.

(not that I'd ever watch him, regardless of my respect level)

Just say, "I realize why everyone's so mad. The young guy earned the Tonight Show. I agreed to step aside and I need to stick to that." Then Leno could go to ABC or Fox and presumably (I hate to admit) eventually beat both Conan and Dave in the ratings. It's win/win for Leno.

but i was curious what he'd have to say. i got real angry when he made some dumb joke about conan's letter. something along the lines of why is conan complaining about only getting 7 months to prove himself, when nbc only gave jay 4 months. leno's not doing anything to help himself in the mess.

great line by conan tonight though. "you can do anything you can dream of, kids... unless jay leno wants to do it too."

Surprised Leno put him on (I understand everything is ratings-driven, but the guy just mocked Jay on his show the night before lol)

The audience didn't really know how to react

Kimmel was going back and forth between "real" answers to the questions and burying Leno to his face

Leno was able to get in a shot here and there but he seemed flustered, if not totally perturbed, by the exchange

Because, while I do see the desperate need for YET ANOTHER late night show war post, I'll just go ahead and put this here...

nytimes.com:

>Executive Leaps to Leno’s Defense

By BILL CARTER

PASADENA, Calif. — The verbal battle in the late-night wars got louder Thursday as a top NBC executive struck back against on-air attacks on the network’s once and future “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno.

The executive, Dick Ebersol, chairman of NBC Universal Sports, said the reason for Mr. Leno’s return to NBC’s late-night roster after a short stint in prime time this season was a simple one: disappointing ratings for Conan O’Brien’s “Tonight Show.”

Referring to the pointed jokes made this week by Mr. O’Brien and David Letterman of CBS, Mr. Ebersol said it was “chicken-hearted and gutless to blame a guy you couldn’t beat in the ratings.”

He added that “what this is really all about is an astounding failure by Conan.” Mr. Ebersol is a veteran at the network, with a longstanding relationship with NBC Universal’s embattled chief executive, Jeff Zucker. Mr. Ebersol also has a deep link to the network’s late-night history, having been a creator of “Saturday Night Live,” and he has been frequently consulted on changes in NBC’s late-night lineup.

Ratings for Mr. O’Brien’s “Tonight Show” have dropped off sharply from what they had been under Mr. Leno. Mr. Leno himself experienced a prominent failure when he moved to prime time with a show in September that struggled so much that NBC’s affiliated stations demanded change.

But the change NBC decided on was to reinstate Mr. Leno at 11:35 each weeknight and nudge Mr. O’Brien back a half hour — an outcome he expressly rejected in a statement he issued earlier this week. (Since then, the two sides have been in intense negotiations to settle Mr. O’Brien’s contract. While no deal was expected Thursday night, one executive who has been connected to the talks said an agreement by Friday was possible.)

Separately, NBC announced on Thursday changes to its 10 p.m. hour to take effect after the Winter Olympics. It will introduce a new comedy reality show from Jerry Seinfeld called “The Marriage Ref” on Thursdays and add a new drama, “Parenthood,” as the 10 p.m. show on Tuesdays.

NBC will also move “Law & Order” to Mondays at 10, starting March 1. A sibling series, “Law & Order: SVU,” will go back to 10 p.m., where it once thrived, now on Wednesdays. The network will keep its “Dateline NBC” newsmagazine on Friday at 10 p.m.

Mr. Ebersol chided Mr. O’Brien for declining to take advice about how to adjust his show to the 11:35 p.m. slot from the style he had used on NBC’s 12:35 a.m. “Late Night” show for 16 years.

He said he had met personally with the host three weeks before he stepped behind the “Tonight” desk for the first time to urge him to take steps to expand the appeal he had built up in his “Late Night” years, saying that NBC hosts beginning with Johnny Carson had recognized the importance of making the show appealing first and foremost to cities in the central time zone like Chicago and Des Moines.

Mr. O’Brien’s camp, while steering clear of commenting on Mr. Ebersol’s criticism, confirmed the executive had met with the star and discussed potential changes in the show.

They have previously defended the performance of the show, saying seven months was not a fair shot for Mr. O’Brien to hone his comedic voice at the earlier hour especially in the face of reduced audiences for Mr. Leno’s 10 p.m. show and the late local newscasts that followed it.

Mr. Ebersol labeled that a “specious argument,” saying that for much of the last five years, Mr. Leno had much lower lead-in audiences than Mr. Letterman got at CBS and yet he always won in the ratings.

“I like Conan enormously personally,” Mr. Ebersol said. “He was just stubborn about not being willing to broaden the appeal of his show.”

Mr. Ebersol’s comments came after increasing assaults on Mr. Zucker and Mr. Leno across the late-night shows. Mr. O’Brien on Wednesday began turning to more pointed jokes about Mr. Leno in his monologue, though the most ferocious attacks came from a seeming bystander, Mr. Letterman.

Mr. O’Brien joked that young people should be inspired to believe that they can “do anything you want in life — unless Jay Leno wants to do it, too.”

Mr. Leno had his own fun during his monologue on Thursday, saying: “With all the controversy going on here at NBC, actually, ‘The Tonight Show’ with Conan O’Brien’s ratings have gone up. So you’re welcome.”

Mr. Ebersol said Mr. Leno had not pushed for any of the changes, not the original decision to guarantee Mr. O’Brien the show five years in advance, nor the plan to put Mr. Leno in prime time.

“Jeff and I are big boys,” Mr. Ebersol said, referring to Mr. Zucker. “When we do something big in the public forum and it doesn’t succeed, we know we’ll be the butt of criticism. But you don’t personally attack someone who hasn’t done anything.” In this case, he added, “we bet on the wrong guy.”

Mr. Leno dominated the late-night ratings since the mid-1990s, rarely losing even a night to Mr. Letterman. But NBC faced a dilemma in 2004 when Mr. O’Brien, at the time one of the hottest stars in television, had offers to jump to a different network. To prevent that — because Mr. Zucker and others concluded Mr. O’Brien represented NBC’s future in late night — Mr. O’Brien was offered “The Tonight Show” after a five-year wait.

The recent proposed shift to a later time slot has resulted in a surge of sympathy for Mr. O’Brien, stirring what is playing out as a growing youth revolt among the late-night audiences.

Mr. O’Brien’s fans among the younger segments of the late-night audience have rallied to his defense, forming support groups on the Internet and planning rallies outside his studio at Universal City in Los Angeles. And his ratings seem to be growing.

While overnight household ratings showed Mr. Letterman still ahead on Wednesday, Mr. O’Brien is seeing his best numbers there in months. Mr. Letterman had a 3.5 rating Wednesday night in those preliminary numbers, while Mr. O’Brien grew to a 3.0, well up from a recent average of about a 2.2.

More telling were early demographic numbers from the country’s top 24 cities: there, among viewers ages 18 to 49 — the central age group for most late-night advertisers — Mr. O’Brien seems to be thriving. He climbed to a 1.8 in that group Wednesday, well above the 1.0 he had recently been scoring.

But if Mr. O’Brien was soaring, Mr. Letterman was roaring Wednesday night, unleashing a torrent of biting commentary about NBC, and digging into his apparent lingering bitterness about how it threw him over for Mr. Leno in the early 1990s.

In his monologue, Mr. Letterman dealt slams on Mr. Leno’s grabbing for every host job imaginable, including one joke that had Mr. Leno climbing out of Merv Griffin’s grave. Mr. Letterman also made several references to an incident from that period when Mr. Leno had secretly listened in on an NBC executive meeting from a closet.

“They’re just striking out at Jay,” Mr. Ebersol said. “It seems like professional jealousy.”

Jay Leno Criticizes NBC On 'Tonight' Cliffhanger

Jay Leno, expressing what he called "surprise and disappointment" with NBC executives, said yesterday that he believed his performance as the host of the "Tonight" show should have more than satisfied the network and that he did not deserve to be threatened with losing the leading show in late-night television to David Letterman.

"Am I crazy?" Mr. Leno said in a telephone interview. "The ratings are going up, the advertisers are happy and so are the affiliates." And yet Mr. Leno said he had not received any assurances from NBC executives in New York that he would not be dropped in favor of Mr. Letterman by Jan. 15. That is the deadline NBC is facing to match a CBS offer to give Mr. Letterman about $16 million to star in a nightly talk show at 11:30, the same time as the "Tonight" show.

"I am disappointed," Mr. Leno said. "I feel like a guy who has bought a car from somebody, painted it, fixed it up and made it look nice and then the guy comes back and says he promised to sell the car to his brother-in-law." Go Elsewhere? 'Of Course'

Mr. Leno said he would "obviously leave NBC immediately" if the network decided to give the "Tonight" show to Mr. Letterman. He said he would absolutely refuse to do a show in the 12:30 A.M. spot now occupied by Mr. Letterman's show, "Late Night," and would indeed consider creating the same problem for NBC that Mr. Letterman's proposed deal with CBS caused.

"Would I go to CBS if they asked me?" Mr. Leno said. "Of course. I'm not going to do some little happy hour from Omaha at 12:30."

In the last week, factions inside NBC have been taking sides between Mr. Leno and Mr. Letterman. "NBC's West Coast executives have said everything is O.K.," Mr. Leno said of Warren Littlefield, the president of NBC Entertainment, and John Agoglia, the president of NBC Enterprises.

"But the East Coast people won't say that," he added. Specifically, Mr. Leno said he had heard from Robert C. Wright, the president of NBC, to whom both West Coast executives report. "He said they don't know what they're doing yet," Mr. Leno said. "I appreciate the candor, but it does disappoint me."

The comedian became the host of the "Tonight" show in May after Johnny Carson retired after 30 years on the show. At the time, NBC chose Mr. Leno over Mr. Letterman for the position. 'A Guy With Two Girlfriends'

Now it faces the same choice, but the stakes are much higher. Beyond the $16 million to Mr. Letterman, NBC would have to pay Mr. Leno about $10 million if it breaks its commitment to him to be the host of "Tonight." NBC now pays Mr. Leno $3 million a year as the host of "Tonight."

"NBC is like a guy with two girlfriends who doesn't know which one he's going to marry on Jan. 15," Mr. Leno said. "And the longer you wait, the madder they both get."

He said NBC's indecision was hurting him even if he survived the Letterman threat, because the network executives were letting it be known publicly that they have some doubts about him, doubts, he said, that are unjustified. 'This Isn't About Dave'

To compound the emotional aspect of the conflict, Mr. Leno acknowledged his own debt to Mr. Letterman. "I would not have this job if not for Dave," he said. Mr. Letterman had Mr. Leno on his own show as his most frequent guest in the early 1980's. "This isn't about Dave. Dave is worth whatever somebody wants to pay him. Anything I can do toward keeping him at NBC, I'd do." Short of giving up his own show, that is.

"It's a tricky situation," Mr. Leno said. "Dave is truly a star and terrific, and this is a terrible position NBC is in. But fragging your own soldier doesn't make any sense to me."

He argued that he ought to have satisfied NBC by now because his ratings have shown growth in recent weeks, after a period of turmoil when Mr. Leno's former manager and the show's former producer, Helen G. Kushnick, enraged NBC executives with her tactics in booking guests. 'We Have Great Morale'

NBC fired her. Since then, Mr. Leno said, the show has been running smoothly. "We have great morale," he said. "Everybody is having fun, except for some long faces when we read all these bad things about the show in the newspapers."

Mr. Leno reached about a 4.9 national rating in recent weeks, which is up from a low of about 4.2 in the summer. (Each rating point represents 931,000 homes.)

"I've always said, 'Just judge me by my performance,' " he said. "I've done stand-up comedy for a lot of years. When I go out and see a full house of 3,000 people, I know I'm making money for somebody. If I see only 1,200 people and the house is half-full, I know I've got to do another show to make it up to the guy. But the affiliates, the advertisers, they're all happy."

Mr. Leno said he would not be reluctant to have to face-off against Mr. Letterman at 11:30 each night. "In the comedy clubs I used to say, put me on after Richard Pryor," Mr. Leno said. "Competition is really the only way you get better."

Despite the indecision in New York, Mr. Leno said he did not believe that NBC would force him out. "I don't think it will happen," he said. But he added, "I'm not sure, and that's the annoying part."

Nope, Conan has Jay Leno's Tankfest 2010 as a lead-in. NOPE! Jay tanking!

Jay Leno Defends Conan's Ratings Troubles: "Exact Same Thing I Went Through"

Leno said that the attention to Conan O'Brien's ratings woes is "the exact same thing I went through when I took over from Johnny ."

"Whoever has the job goes through this," Leno said. "It's all part of the growing pains. down for a while and then back up again. And I don't think it's fair to judge Conan on what's happened in a month or two....I got beat up for four or five months, and you still go out with your chin up, fight the good fight."

Since taking over from Leno, Conan has seen the "Tonight Show" ratings go from first in the late night ratings to third, behind both CBS' "Late Show with David Letterman" and ABC's "Nightline."

"Conan was number one for 17 years in a row in his spot," Leno said. "OK, he moves to another spot, it takes a while to find yourself, and that's what hes going through.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ That last quote: Conan EARNED that show.

>jay DOMINATED the ratings for 15 years. he made the show
>better.

Yes, after a couple years of being NOT FIRST when he actually had competition. What's that? He was given more than 7 months to establish himself? Amazing.

>conan is flopping and there is NO CHANCE of it improving.

Why is there NO CHANCE of it improving?

>so, stop telling me about how letterman wasn't at CBS to fuck
>it up for jay, when, in fact, HE WAS THERE FOR ALL THOSE YEARS
>AND JAY OWNED HIM.

I'm going to make it pretty clear for you...

1. Leno takes over The Tonight Show with no competition, he does okay but not with the best ratings.
2. NBC second guesses their choice and considers Letterman to take over.
3. Leno is pissed and says "It's only been a few months, give me a chance, don't take it away from me!" (sound familiar?)
4. Letterman goes to CBS.
5. Leno becomes second in ratings for a couple years when he actually has competition.
6. Finally establishes himself after almost TWO YEARS and starts to get ratings up and then goes on to take the crown for the next 15 years.

Back then, you would have been saying... ">Leno is flopping and there is NO CHANCE of it improving."

He got almost 2 years to turn the ship around... Conan gets 7 months?

Go Wings.

126. "Jeff Zucker had Conan arrested back in college (swipe)"
In response to Reply # 0

http://www.deadline.com/hollywood/no-joke-jeff-zucker-had-conan-arrested/

It's just been brought to my attention that, while they were Harvard undergraduates, Jeff Zucker '86 called the cops on Conan O'Brien '85. (I never saw previous reports about this.) According to articles in both the Harvard Crimson and Yale Daily News, handcuffsZucker, then president of the university's Harvard Crimson daily newspaper, dispatched the police to the Harvard Lampoon office after O'Brien, who was president of the campus humor magazine, organized a prank on his college rival -- stealing an entire print run of the Crimson before it could be distributed. "He only forgave me when I gave him The Tonight Show," Zucker told a Yale gathering back in 2005. The Harvard Crimson described the incident this way in a 2004 article about Conan landing The Tonight Show courtesy of Zucker: "O’Brien cut his teeth in comedy as president of The Harvard Lampoon, a semi-secret Sorrento Square social organization that used to occasionally publish a so-called humor magazine. In fact, O’Brien first met Zucker, his current boss, one day when O’Brien and the Lampoon editors stole all the copies of that morning’s Crimson. Zucker, then Crimson President, called the police and met O’Brien face to face while he was being arrested." In 2001, Conan told The New Yorker this about the incident: "College pranks are supposed to be clever, but our rivalry with the Crimson had degenerated into us stealing something, Jeff calling the police, and the police making us haul it back," said O'Brien. (Other Lampoon pranks on Zucker included "a fake phone-sex ad with Zucker’s dorm-room phone number. Zucker did not find any of this particularly hilarious.") So what's to glean from this Harvard history lesson? Yes, Jeff Zucker was a thin-skinned prick who didn't understand comedy or know how to handle creatives even back then.

As I see it, there's absolutely no reason for Leno's idiots not to come back to him. They're not even paying attention to all this shit. Leno will go right back to where he was. Conan will come in third at Fox, maybe occasionally second. Conan will eat into Dave's ratings (and maybe to some extent Stewart's), not Leno's.

NBC and Conan O'Brien finalize settlement
January 21, 2010 | 6:40 am

Ending his brief reign as host of one of television's longest-running shows, Conan O'Brien today finalized a rich severance deal with NBC that releases the comedian from "The Tonight Show" and frees him to join another network in time for the new fall season, an NBC spokeswoman confirmed.

The settlement, hammered out over the last week, brings to an abrupt end O'Brien's nearly 20-year career with NBC, where he began as a staff writer for "Saturday Night Live" in the late 1980s. His separation from NBC includes a payout that will go down as one of the most eye-popping in the annals of Hollywood: O'Brien, who has 2 1/2 years remaining on his contract, will walk away with about $32 million, according to people close to the negotiations who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

Overall, NBC will have to shell out $40 million to $50 million to close the book on its late-night drama.

NBC agreed to compensate the show's staff members, including executive producer Jeff Ross. About 190 people worked on the show, including nearly 70 people who relocated to Los Angeles from New York early last year to work with O'Brien at the program's newly built studios on the Universal lot. NBC and O'Brien's team spent the last few days ironing out severance packages for all the show's workers.

O'Brien's manager, Gavin Polone, said the talk show host would kick in some of his own money for his staff as well.

O'Brien's final "Tonight Show" appearance will be Friday. But he may not be off the air for long. The comedian will be allowed to work on a competing network by September. Jay Leno will be back in his old time slot even sooner. Leno, who surrendered "The Tonight Show" to O'Brien last spring and then was handed his own prime-time show on the network at 10 p.m., will return to late night after NBC's Olympic coverage concludes at the end of February.

The costly resolution ends two weeks of high drama that damaged the images and reputations not only of NBC executives, but also of Leno, who was painted as the villain by many in the media including CBS' David Letterman, who took numerous jabs at Leno over the last week. He was also the target of a grass-roots Internet campaign to demonstrate support for the embattled O'Brien. Earlier this week, Leno provided his side of the story on his program, saying he told NBC executives that he was skeptical that a prime-time show would work.

It was an undignified end to O'Brien's long career at NBC -- he spent 16 years as host of "Late Night With Conan O'Brien" -- and his short tenure at "The Tonight Show." Certainly this was not how NBC anticipated O'Brien's run with "The Tonight Show" playing out when it declared him the "king of late night" in June after he made his debut as host.

Ironically, NBC looked to avoid this exact scenario when it decided in 2004 to make O'Brien host of "The Tonight Show" in 2009. That move, engineered by the company's chief executive, Jeff Zucker, was done to keep O'Brien from jumping to Fox. NBC also was betting that by 2009 Leno would be ready to exit the stage and that O'Brien, who appealed to younger viewers, would be ready to take over. But as his retirement loomed, Leno became increasingly unhappy at the prospect of stepping aside while still No. 1 in the ratings.

Moreover, with rival networks expressing interest in hiring Leno, Zucker faced a difficult choice: Renege on his promise to give O'Brien "The Tonight Show" -- and pay him a $40-million breakup fee -- or follow through with his plan and nudge Leno out the "Tonight Show" door.

Instead, Zucker crafted a quick fix: Give Leno a 10 p.m. show, which would keep both comedians in the NBC fold. O'Brien went along with Zucker's "Leno in prime-time" plan when it was announced in 2008. He moved his family to Los Angeles to prepare to inherit the late-night institution previously hosted by Johnny Carson and, before him, Jack Paar. But Leno's show at 10 p.m., which launched in September, drew weak ratings and critiques by TV critics that Leno seemed off his game.

The low viewership level hurt NBC's affiliates, who count on a large audience at 10 p.m. to boost their late local news programs, a big revenue generator. Many local stations experienced ratings declines of more than 20%, and NBC was facing a mutiny as many affiliates threatened to push Leno to 11 p.m. and run their local news at 10 p.m. NBC executives decided they needed to make a switch and told O'Brien they were pushing the start time of his show half an hour later, to 12:05 a.m., to make room for Leno at 11:35 p.m.

NBC expected that O'Brien would go along. But he refused, triggering a firestorm of controversy and rich material for other comedians.

Now O'Brien is free to decide his future. Most industry observers are betting that Fox, which has struggled in the past to get into the late-night game, is his next stop. Indeed, O'Brien has a history with Fox, where he spent two years as a writer on "The Simpsons" in the early 1990s. Just last week, Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly expressed enthusiasm for O'Brien -- but the network may face a hard sell with its affiliates, some of whom are locked into contracts to run syndicated sitcom reruns in the 11 p.m. time period.

But if Fox really wants O'Brien, odds are it would find a way to make it happen. The earliest he would be on the network would be in the fall, but next January is more likely.

Meanwhile, Leno, whose prime-time show ends Feb. 11, will face the challenge of improving on O'Brien's ratings. NBC has been trailing CBS' David Letterman and is tied with him in the coveted demographic of adults ages 18 to 49. During the last week, O'Brien's ratings have nearly doubled. Whether the backlash against Leno, fair or not, will hurt him when he returns to his old 11:35 p.m. time slot remains a question mark.

And finally, NBC, which is already enduring a tough season, now has to spend heavily to develop new shows for the 10 p.m. hour, at a time when the General Electric Co.-owned network already conceded that it would lose about $200 million on its coverage of the Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

That's gonna hurt them so bad in the long term it's ridiculous.
Watch - in 2,3 years when Leno doesn't want to do the show anymore and leaves, NBC'll flip. "Homie, we gave it back to you and all you gave us was a couple years?!"
And if Leno's ratings don't pick up...wow. Still can't believe they'd drop the ball like this.

The car and the horse were rented, everything else is fake.

All this legal wrangling over 40 million dollars or so, there's no way the show's gonna be able to drop 10% of that every night.

This kinda completely set up bit is why I've lost interest in Conan over the last few years.

gonna go the route of Craig Kilborn and fall off the map showing up occasionally in small movie roles

go back to his roots and join SNL in all seriousness, wouldn't mind seeing Conan host the show soon, maybe have his team take over writing skits and give Seth a week off

start a Fox talk show in September battling Jay and Dave

Doubt it. He's still got a follwoing and he's still too big of a name.

That would mean him sticking with NBC. Definitely not happeneing.

>start a Fox talk show in September battling Jay and Dave

This is the most likely scenario.
