"Sorry y'all ....but Sin City is overrated as fuck."
Mon Apr-25-05 03:42 PM by Airbreed

i finally caught that bitch last week friday.

- the overacting got annoying after the first 10 minutes and made me want to throw my fruitopia through the goddamn screen.

- the visual efects were aiight, but nothing special. ive seen better.

- the only good part of the film was mickey rourke as merv. son did his THING.

otherwise, the rest of the stories in the film were filler.

i dont mean to shit on any of you fanboys and your favorite graphic novel of all time, but i dont read them shits or comic books. and so, from an unbiased point of view, the film is a overrated $9.75 rip-off.

That you thought it was overrated after 3-4 weeks of people raving about it, calling it the best film of the year and one of the best popcorn films ever made?

i wanted to see what all of this 'best film of the year' crap was all about. i wasnt impressed with the trailers, or the so called 'dazzling' special effects... so i knew i wasn't going to be peeing in my pants after seeing the whole kit and kaboodle.

unfortunately, i should have went with my first instinct.

thank god for mickey. he kept me from tearing my chair out the floor and burning down the theater.

And it was worth every penny twice over. I wouldn't run around saying it was the best film of the year or that it will change cinema, but I enjoyed the hell out of that movie. I don't think I've had such an enjoyable movie going experience in a while. Probably since the first time I saw The Incredibles.

Although I will say that Kung Fu Hustle came close at times and that had Oldboy (which is my favorite film I've seen this year) not been so disturbing, would have been near the top as well.

movie comes out, PTP regulars praise it upon its debut (usually after a generous amount of pre-release hype)

.....which is whether or not Sin City was actually a good film. It was a nice thought, but absolutely irrelevant.

Appeals to trends on PTP, and what posters do and say at one point or another cannot make that movie good, because it isn't.

Sin City was an average motion picture, at best, and deep down I think we all realize it.

a)PTP overhypers
b)PTP reactionary hatred
c)PTP reaction to the reactionary hatred which is overhype

I mean I see what you are saying, and you are a sensible dude, but shit, can the point get addressed up in hurr?

If someone dosen't like the film, they have right to, and have the right to have that discussed.

....and other obvious shit we know but don't like to say out loud."

Yes, Sin City was average at best, but Tarantino did direct it (right around the time he directed 'Hero') and so if you didn't like it, you simply aren't deep, and don't appreciate cool things.

The reality is that Sin City was about as good as 'Demolition Man' which is up there in my "good shitty movies"(GSM) list, but that is about it.

Its not bad, just very average.

Films like 'Kung Fu Hustle' are dozens of times as thoughftul and creative.

How stupid and irrelevant was that question?

Another question:

Is that the best you can do, and will the PTPers admit that I have a point this time(and every time, for that matter)?

Not at all actually. The ONLY times I see you posting in here reference your ongoing beef with Tarantino and his fans. Relax. People like him. People like many things. Other people don't like those things. Somehow though, we manage to get along.

Best I can do to what? Insult you cause you don't like Tarnatino? I really care less if you like him, it just bugs me you won't shut up about it.

Right, I didn't just post in the 'Band of Brothers appreciation post', expressing my opinion on it and other war films.

Maybe you need to pay better attention.

You already stalk me, so please, stalk more effectively.

Do that, and you'd see that I comment on a lot of things.

You dragged your hate in here. Yeah whatever he directed a whopping 5 minutes of it...it's far from a Tarantino film.

I've never seen Band of Brothers, thus I didn't read that post.

I need to pay better attention? Alright. I will. If you promise to take the rest of the day to learn the word "opinion" and what it means (see: convieniently placed definition in reply above).

>

Yes, I spend much of my wasted time here at Okayplayer.com stalking you. I'm that bored.

You seemed to have missed the point completley, but I'll make an amendment: You talk about Tarantino/his fans far too much for your own good. There are films out there that I think are shitty, but I certainly don't frustrate myself to the point of hatehatehate all over a message board because I just choose to ignore those films. As I said before: Relax. And shut up about your hating Quentin Tarantino, because nobody really cares what you think, especially when your best layed argument is "Pulp Fiction means absolutely nothing and you have to be a cappucino sipping, sunglass wearing fanboy to enjoy that movie".

I've heard at least 10 people refer to Sin City as "the new Tarantino movie" the same way that 'Hero' has been referred to as "Tarantino's asian movie."

Yes, I find people who attach themselves to things in such a shameless matter as complete shit, and I was poking fun at that phenomenon with my post, but most of my post wasn't about that. It was just a couple comments, so cheeel.

>I've never seen Band of Brothers, thus I didn't read that

Okay, so you admit that I actually do post on a wide number of topics. Apology accepted.

>Yes, I spend much of my wasted time here at Okayplayer.com

To be fair, no, you are not a stalker, but I do have stalkers, for real, so don't belittle it. Folks do log on and search for Orbit_Established.

My Pulp Fiction critiques were legendary and you know it.

You don't like me because I made you rethink your own opinions, and you don't like that.

In response to Reply # 14

He didn't have anything to do with the production of Hero.
They just attached his name for western distribution as Quentin Tarentino "presents" Hero. They did the same for Iron Monkey because they felt the only way some narrowminded westerners would watch an Asian film was if Tarentino's name was attached.

That whole notion is ridiculous.

I was merely pointing out that I wasn't a Frank Miller fanboy who loved the movie before I even saw it (which was an attack made by the original poster, IIRC). That's why my point was relevant.

I fell in love with this movie completely on its own merits.

If you don't like it, fine. I just think it's strange to call something overrated because you don't like it. Just say you don't like it. It's not overrated when so many people, including me, are absolutely bananas about this flick.

think about this.

has any other adaptation of a comic book turned out so much like a comic book on the big screen? lets even include saturday morning cartoons and straight to vhs shit, and tv series'.

...i dont think so.

that movie was just as good as reading the damned thing yourself. people on here who diss others for reading comics (whether the appreciation comes from reading them in the store once in a while or owning entire volumes, it doesnt matter). ...because this too cool shit is worse then the fanboys.

i saw the movie twice. lovvvvvvved it.

Yeah, see, the thing is, no matter how you slice it, the comics are better.

The damn scenes just don't play as well with real people playing them. It's awkward, you know?

Plus, Rodriguez is an average filmmaker, at best. I thought it was obvious?

It may have been slavishly faithful to the graphic novel, and that's great, but in being so faithful it inadvertently revealed the storytelling weaknesses of the source material. And that's why I wasn't as enthralled with it as just about everyone else here. Visually, it looked great. Fantastic. Woo hoo. But as a *movie*, from a storytelling standpoint, it didn't work for me.

I think the whole enterprise would have worked better as an anthology series on HBO.

COSIGN to death on this. People act like just because the film was faithful to the comic, that means that ithe film is great.

No.

That means they did a great job of adapting it, but it DOES NOT MEAN the film was ACTUALLY GOOD.

Its actually a MOVIE that must be WATCHED. It stans alone and should be judged. And judging it as a film leads to the conclusions that it is far, far, far, far, from a great film.

Far.

In fact, yes, the film did show how simplistic and bland much of the storytelling in the comic was, absolutely.

Its sort of taboo to call Frank Miller anything less than an apostle of Christ, but SIN CITY might actually be one of his weaker series.

the voiceovers were annoying and distracting,

the violence is a little over the top for my tastes
so I don't see myself giving it multiple repeated viewings

Idiot it wasn't overacting it was characterization, like in the comic books and cartoons it's how characters convey themselves. You missed the whole point and sound like you went in expecting a normal comic book movie not a graphical film comic bookstrip unfolding in front of your eyes or the experience that was Sin city. Dudes gotta learn to view things from different perspectives.
