"So I'm officially done with film school."

I officially finished today after a "debriefing" in my senior film project class.

Does this mean I can go back to enjoying movies again?

It's a shitload more more than that though. That's like saying basketball is just a game to see what team gets a ball through a circle more times. Producing is tough, tough work - and the way you really get into it is find people to put their money up. And find people to work for you.
>
>what do you have to knwo about film to be a producer?

Everything. You're involved every step of the way. If your editor is asking if you're doing a digital intermediate or conforming picture to negative, you'd better know what hes talking about and how much money each cost. If you don't know how film acts and how to handle it, how will you know how much to spend on it? Etc.

Might seem that way, but no.

i havent been around here much the last few months, but when i watch movies these days, there's three people i think about while watching them. you, ricky_BUTLER, and longo. ive shared excellent and enlightening film conversations with the three of you over the past few years. i vaguely remember when you posted acouple years back questioning if you made a bad decision going into film as it was taking away from your ability to simply "watch" and enjoy a film.

now that youve gona all the way (including seeing the godfather), you can go show the world what okay "reviews" fans are all about. represent us, please.

really, congrats dude.

UMiami has something called a defense where you basically defend why you made your thesis the way you did.

I wouldn't have been able to defend my thesis.

Do you all remember the thesis I worked on? Awful. Awful. Awful.

Anyway the debriefing was just relaxing, talking with the teacher about the class and basically telling us we can take a C in the class (cause the films arent done yet) which can be changed in 3 months upon completion of the film, or take an Incomplete which take up to a year to change - but denying us of actually getting the diploma (even though we do walk).

I took the C. But I'm thinking of changing that to the Incomplete simply because I don't trust our editors or director to finish in 3 months and I certainly don't want a C.

>Does this mean I can go back to enjoying movies again?

But more than that, I hope you learned a little bit about the process of selling the movies you make.

My wife recently got back from the Cannes Film Festival. Each year, she's involved with wrangling and arranging talent to speak to the students working in the American Pavilion. If you don't know about that, it's where film students from around the country apply and compete for a chance to *pay* to come the Cannes and *work* at the tent in exchange for festival passes and some sort of access to stars and players.

For the most part, the students have no clue about the people my wife gets to speak to them, and she often has to work to convince the students to show up. This year she grabbed a friend from Cinetic Media, which drew nothing but blank stares. Got a guy who had a documentary in the festival. I guess they didn't need to know about getting a doc into Cannes. She even had to convince students to come listen to Stephen Frears. Of course, they were packed in to see Ben Mackenzie from The O.C.

My only advice is get out of the books and the classroom. Learn the real-world application of this stuff.

And yes, please get back to enjoying movies.

Although I will say this.

My view will be tainted in that I went to a state school in California, starting with the recall of Gov. Gray Davis (due to a budget crisis) and the implementation of one Arnold Schwartzeneger (or however you spell it). Thus we've been effed budget-wise for 2 years.

Was it worth it? Yeah I liked it. I learned a lot, that's for sure.

Was it totally neccessary? No. This was 2 years I could have been working and learning things on my own. But I learned a ton about MAKING a film and not just how the business works...so I wouldn't say that I would have learned just as much working. Also I'm insistant on getting a degree and I've NEVER seen myself getting a degree in business or anything...so in that respect it was good.

I met a couple cool people, learned a lot, and that's all that matters. So yeah, it was.
