EXCLUSIVE! THE CLOVERFIELD TRAILER - SEEN!
10.31.07
By Devin Faraci
I have seen the trailer for the monster movie coming from producer JJ Abrams on January 18, 2008. The trailer, which was dated last week and lasts 2 minutes and 16 seconds, will debut in front of Beowulf on November 16th, and it's supposed to be when the title is announced. The version of the trailer I saw had the title attached at the end, so unless this title card was a temporary placeholder for the real title, this movie is called... wait for it...

Cloverfield.

Yep, the name we heard from the start. This does make me think that maybe this trailer, marked as Trailer #1, V.17, with "Newest FX Shots", could change between now and the 16th, especially in regards to the name. We'll see. In the meantime, here's a rundown of what I saw in the trailer (based on the notes I took when I was shown a poor quality copy of the trailer. I was only allowed to watch it twice):

It opens with text:

Multiple sightings of case designate 'Cloverfield'
Camera retrieved at incident site 'U.S. 447'
(Area formerly known as Central Park)

Then we see the footage from the teaser trailer, mostly fast forwarded up to the end, with the explosion and the Statue of Liberty's head landing in the middle of the street. Then there's a guy speaking into the camera.

Guy: My name is Robert Hawkins. Approximately seven hours ago, someTHING attacked the city.

There are flashes of chaos. Much of the trailer is made up of split second moments, and when combined with the fact that it's extreme shaky cam style and that I was watching a terrible copy, it can be hard to make things out. There's a helicopter shot of the headless Statue of Liberty.

Guy again: I have no idea what it is. If you found this,if you're watching this thing, you know more about it than i do.

Then there's a shot of jets flying overhead, in daylight.

A title card reads 'From producer JJ Abrams'

There's more flashes of chaos, there's a guy on a cellphone trying to find out where 'Beth' is, and then there's a girl yelling, 'We cannot go in the middle of the city! we've got to get out of here!'

More chaos. More quick shots. I imagine this stuff will be picked apart when the trailer debuts online.

Over this is what seems to be a conversation between an Army guy and a girl.

Army dude: There's nothing we can do right now

Girl: do you know what that thing is?

Army dude: Whatever it is, it's winning.

More flashes. An argument:

Guy 1: We have no idea what's out there!

Guy 2: I don't care what's out there. Listen to me - she's dying!

Then there's footage of army guys running and shadows on a wall. Shadows of a screaming woman being attacked by a small monster (possibly two - either she's being pulled away from the monster by someone behind her or there's another monster behind her). It's confirmed: the movie has a big beast and small ones. Like the American Godzilla.

People are hiding in a store, and there are huge thumps making everything shake. The windows of the store explode in.

The big sequence is next: Army guys running up a street, firing into the air. Tanks come up behind them, firing. Rockets launch up.

We see the big monster briefly passing between two buildings. I couldn't make it out at all, but it appeared to be HUGE.

Characters race down subway steps, there's a giant explosion, the cameraman is down, there's a figure in a tunnel, people are yelling 'Run!' and running through the tunnel.

Outside of Central Park, a horse drawn carriage goes by.

Guy: Are you still filming?

Cameraman: Yeah. People are going to want to know... how it all went down.

Shot of the Brooklyn Bridge. A helicopter taking off. Some chaos. Then inside the copter girls screaming as the copter spins out of control.

Cut to black, then the title comes up: Cloverfield.

Then the text: End of tape

Then the release date: 1-18-08

So the info I gleaned from this:

The title is Cloverfield.
There are smaller monsters.
This movie will quite probably make a lot of people motion sick.

get money.

The more we find out about it, the less cool it seems.

At this point even an American remake of The Host would have been better IMO.

Just saw the trailer on TV and they gave the rating of PG-13 afterwards.

Movie just went down another notch in my book. And to echo a poster above, I wouldn't put it past them to now show the monster at all...

Not too sure if this movie will live up to the attempted hype.

...

my thoughts,

peace.

He's actually got an Associate Producer credit on this film.

I've been hounding him for weeks about the monster, but dude refuses to confirm or deny anything I ask him about.

My best guess is that it's a super giant squid or kraken.

All he'd say is that it's a sea monster of some kind and that its origins are from Japanese mythology.

not really spoilers but some insights to what "it" is

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/35236

Harry knows what CLOVERFIELD is!!!

Utterly Brilliant.

What is CLOVERFIELD?

For the past year or so, that’s been the question that everyone has been asking. Well… they also wanted to know: What was that trailer? What’s the name of this movie? Who are those actors? What is a SLUSHO? What does any of this mean?

Having seen the film, I can tell you – I have completely forgotten the marketing. I no longer care why the film is titled CLOVERFIELD, I don’t think it has a secret meaning – other than the fact that the movie that the marketing would lead you to, if it will… will knock your cinema-going mind into the floor of the theater.

CLOVERFIELD is a bold genre-reinvention unlike anything we’ve ever seen before.

The basic premise that we know is there. The film is found footage, not an assembled film. The footage is recovered in Central Park. From trailers and ads you know that it probably starts at a party, something happens, and we think there is a giant monster. You’re pretty sure there’s a giant monster attacking New York City… specifically Manhattan.

Well, I’ve just come home from watching CLOVERFIELD. The security on me and my wife for seeing this movie was un-frickin-believable. I suppose some would have the temptation to snap a pic of the monster and send it out online to end, forever, the “mystery” – but folks… there’s no mystery.

The movie is fucking brilliant. It’s what we were told it was going to be. An intimate perspective on an impossibly grand scale human disaster beyond most human levels of comprehension.

What is the monster? How do you describe something that doesn’t look like anything you’ve ever seen before? It’s not a fucking upright walking whale. It doesn’t look like any iteration of GODZILLA that we’ve ever seen. It is enormous. And even though I’ve seen it… I am hard-pressed to come up with a comparative creation. You know that big fucking thing in THE MIST? It isn’t that. Is the creature a biped? I’m not sure, I think it might’ve been a four-legged beastie… it has a tail, it has teeth and freaky eyes like that horse that died in ANIMAL HOUSE. It’s kinda of a grayish-yellowish-off-white looking thing. But more important than the creature is what this fucker does. He basically goes bug-nuts.

The creature isn’t the groundbreaking thing about the film. It is, but it isn’t.

You see, what has me so excited about this film is that this is the giant monster movie that isn’t at all like any giant monster movie we’ve seen before… but is exactly that movie.

I guarantee you that as this movie takes place… all the shit that you’ve seen in Giant monster movies is happening. Somewhere a general is screaming about nuking New York…. Somewhere is a politician screaming that you can’t nuke New York. Another General wants to know why our weapons are not affecting this thing. A PRESIDENT wants to know where it came from – and several thousand journalist are trying to figure all that out too.

But this film isn’t about the scientist, the generals, the Presidents, the mayors or any of the big people. This time, the film is from the perspective of those people that live in those buildings that the monster is breaking through. This is about the people running in the street that scream, “GODZILLA!!!” and run. This is about trying to survive that insanity. Not just that, but to try and save one life.

Like SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, but instead of Nazis it’s a giant monster.

This is a handheld camera movie – knowing this and knowing not to sit too close is probably a good thing… but having said that… you can’t sit far enough from the screen to feel safe. As many of you people know, I am in a wheelchair – and while watching movies, I have my breaks on. There was one moment, so unexpected and so intense that I went 3 ft back.

What about the characters?

You learn everything you need about them in the first 20 minutes. Rob is going to Japan to a new job. He has a brother Jason and a best friend Hud who gets strapped with filming testimonials at his surprise party – but Hud has the hots for Marlena and got talked into it by Jason – who was told to do it by Lily, who loves him. Oh – and they’re taping over a tape that Rob shot of the morning after he and Beth finally did it – after being friends forever. But now he has to go to Japan for his career and Beth shows up with some dick at his party because he didn’t know how to talk with her after they had sex.

It’s a fairly real situation that could happen to anyone. These are just regular good people in the rat race – and trying to have a good time. When the shit goes down.

I wasn’t expecting to like any of the characters. That changes… a lot.

My favorite character? Probably Hud… our cameraman. He’s not a professional photographer, though this “tape” tells an incredibly focused and direct story of epic sweep and filled with intimate reveals. But HUD is “the best friend”. But if I could compare him to any character actor, I’d say he’s like a reigned in Bill Paxton. He’s not going around screaming obscenities… but the shit that comes out of his mouth cracks me up.

The story of this film is actually beautiful though. When the world goes to fuck, you instantly think about the person you love that you don’t know is OK or not. That’s this story. Beth left Rob’s party before the shit went down. They had a fight. When it all goes to hell – Rob and his friends are just trying to get off the island, when a call comes… Beth is somewhere… she can’t move, she’s bleeding and she needs help. And oddly… 911 is busy.

This group of friends sets off through the biggest sort of hell you can imagine to save Beth. Characters die. Shit goes horribly horribly wrong – and it rules!

There’s no score, there’s no rules, there feels like there’s no script and no movie. It feels found, but it is so huge that you can’t ever really believe that… but handheld film just has never had a story of something this fantastical or huge happen. The movie is a landmark genre film. A true milestone in film.

It is all at once art, commercial and grotesquely gleefully gargantuan.

This frankly launches two giant film careers at once. As of this second, I will see and eagerly anticipate every film that J.J. Abrams produces. This sort of stepping back from a genre convention and reinvention is EXACTLY what needs to be done. It isn’t simply going, “Oh, I can make a better Godzilla movie,” but the audacity of saying I’m going to tell that story from one of the most loathed film approaches – the found footage – and simply make the most fucking amazing found tape ever. It won’t just be what it is, but the characters and the story and the emotion and the scope and the journey that the tape takes us on. I can’t wait to see what’s next.

Then there’s Matt Reeves, I don’t know this guy. But I’ll tell you what. You’re gonna mark his name after this. He just came out with a film about as SUNDANCE as you could imagine. This is like an INDIE film – that you’d dream Spielberg would make. Remember the beard’s WAR OF THE WORLDS? Now just imagine that, but with the disarming nature of handheld photography. Where if the camera got dropped and suddenly you’re looking the other way… you don’t see the seams. There’s no backlot, this isn’t two blocks at a time… it’s fucking Manhattan being torn to fuck and they’re just smack dab in midtown and midtown has giant lice monsters and some monstrously huge creature… and then there’s the fucking military… and they are on target, and buildings get hit, shit is going everywhere – and the man directing this apocalypse is Matt Reeves and the planning to just deliver what this spectacle is – is daunting. But sir, BRAVO!

Folks – CLOVERFIELD is worth the obsession, worth the months I’ve had to put up with fans wondering what the hell it was – worth having to deal with reporters asking me what it was – and I didn’t know either. This is a towering movie. A complete reinvention of the disaster movie, the giant monster movie and even the love story. I absolutely love this film and the only thought I had when it was over was how I wanted to watch it 5 more times today.

I want to see the details, I want to watch this film once I’m so familiar with it that I can appreciate the complexity of the frames and the shots. To try to pull the film apart – but I don’t think you’ll be able to. It is just that fucking good! And the flaming hobos... holy fuck man... flaming hobos, but not with shotguns!

Good Bad Robot, Good Bad Robot!!!

I've never been a big fan of this genre per se but I loved this movie from start to finish. It's scary, funny, & the most entertaining 90 minutes I've seen on the big screen in quite awhile.

Basically if you read the review from Harry he's pretty accurate with his assessment. I'm not going to even try & to describe the main monster but you get several glimpses of it before the big reveal. For all the speculation about it, it's pretty bad ass. The mini monsters are as well. For a PG-13 movie, it does a good job of delivering some solid "OH SHIT!!!" moments. See this on the biggest screen with the best sound in your town. While the handheld camera work was a bit nauseating at times, it was a great way to tell the story. I hated Blair Witch as much as anyone but it works here. Especially the editing. The pacing is perfect. The party at the begining sets everything up & gives just enough character development needed to get us to the action. Cameraman Hud provides some nice comic relief along the journey & all the other actors are solid as well. If you stay till after the credits there's some audio at the end of the tape. Unfortunately none of us could tell what was said at the end of it.
2008 is off to a great start tho.

A-

The only complaints I have is that some of the handheld footage was a little too nauseating & there were 2 scenes that could've been acted better imo

>when it's moving and destroying shit? b/c those drawings
>look kinda goofy to me.

I mean yeah like I said, while those drawings are pretty accurate for the most part, they still don't really do it justice on when it comes to seeing it on a big screen in action & with the sound effects. You only get 2 or 3 real clear shots of it that you can focus on as a whole for more than a few seconds. And I think it's better that way. The longer you get to look at it on screen the goofier it starts to look. But just as soon as you start to think that, it moves quick into action & scares the shit outta you. It does NOT fuck around. 1 of the extended looks is of the face which is a lot creepier than that last drawing which makes it look like an old fogey imo.

It's better if you dont even see those drawings before you see the movie. I liked the fear factor better not knowing what to expect as I felt like 1 of guys at the party that got thrown into the action right along with them. Another reason why the handheld footage was so effective.

I'm lucky though because I avoided all the hype around it and I got to see it not even knowing that it was all recorded on a hand-held camera. After the first three or four minutes I was like "aw fuck, not this blair witch bullshit again!" But in all honesty, they pulled this off well. I don't want to write too many spoilers here other than to mention that it was a fun cinematic experience.

I got exactly what I expected plus a little more as I didn't know about the mini monsters going into it. So that 1st scene that showed them "leaking out" dropped my jaw. The 2nd scene where they appeared was somewhat predictable but still pretty intense as well.

i must say it was good. it was everything i expected and a little more.

just a few thoughts

-BEWARE I'M DROPPING SPOILERS-

liked the character development, however i do think we spent too much time at that party though.

but once it got started it was non stop. i liked the fact that we didn't get to see to much of the monster either. even though at the heart it's a monster movie it's also a character drama.

hud and the camera, it was very jarring watching the shaky cam action but very realistic though and hud was kinda making me mad because he kept putting the camera on his friends all through the battle and not the monster even though they were pointing at it for him to shoot it. but i guess that also goes for realism because i'd probably be too scared to shoot it too, that and all those rockets and guns going off all around me.

those little creatures were aggressive as fuck. i almost jumped out the seat when he put the night vision on. and that bite, damn. i wonder what it did to that girl did her head explode or something?

but the mystery behind the whole thing is really cool because unlike old monster movies and most recently with godzilla (which i really didn't think was that bad) they always try to explain it way with science and stuff. damn that, it attacked, we attacked. but who was that the national guard or something because how did the military get to manhattan that fast?

the monster, after all the speculation and everything finally seeing it (somewhat) exceeded my expectations that damn thing was huge. it looked like some kind of alien sloth or something. no way that thing was some kind of earth mutation. and the view of it being bombed from above was spectacular. at the end when we saw it up close and personal though it didn't look that big.

and the ending was great, i like endings where the outcome is uncertain. like you know but you don't know.

grade: a

I think it was the national guard. I mean they are our first line of defense after all. As for MElanie (or whatever her name was) I think they blew her away and took her out her misery. They weren't tryna take chances with her condition, as a matter of fact if you saw the thing being wheeled of in a gurney (not the dude with his chest ripped open), it didn't really look like any of those little critters. They were tarantula-like and hairy. THAT SHIT IN THE GURNEY LOOKED LIKE A GIANT LOBSTER. Maybe she was gettin ready to turn into one of them.

Favorite moment is when dude asks while they were in the subway "What line is this?" And your man Hud says "Dude I don't think the trains are runnin right now!" HAHAHAHAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am definitely seeing this again this weekend.

Great take on monster movies. I really thought it was video taped, at one point I forgot it was a movie. BUT...

I had the worst crowd, people booing in the middle, kids yelling out, "GAY!!" and when they showed Jessica Lucas pantie shot, all you heard was whistling and claps. The worst part, was at the very end, when they said their I LOVE YOUs, hella people just laughed and booed.

As I walked out with my girl, I heard a bunch of kids saying it was like the Blair Witch Project...beside camera work, it's nothing like it.

I give it a solid B. I wanted more.

i cant believe i'm using the "they don't get it" defense, but its truth

"the same old monster movie in new threads" is one quote i read
thing is, it's actually very true

i'm irritated that i got no closure form the movie
i don't know what the thing was, how it got there, or anything else that was going on

but i got to see what these 4 people went through throughout the entire ordeal. you watch godzilla, and all you see is godilla and people running and screaming, a few people trying to fix the problem, and the military blowing it to smithereens. we actually how it would realistically happen to someone in the middle of ground zero for once. and THAT is the brilliance and beauty of the film.

if something like this actually happened, it would be the single most intriguing piece of footage perhaps ever recorded. people's fascination would be at a fever pitch. the h bomb test footage we got? 9/11? ufo footage? none of it would hold a candle to something like this.

i was pissed at the ending, but it really couldn't have ended any differently. i'd like a sequel, but i don't know how it would be done, but honestly, i wanna know a lot more about this thing and its hell sent offspring. as far as cliffhangers go, this was a great one, even in its simplicity. A+ film.

"but i got to see what these 4 people went through throughout the entire ordeal."

You cared about the characters? None of them seemed remotely real to me (and they all came off as annoying in that sappy beginning). Their reactions to the horror were beyond ridiculous (when they had them, some times a person sees their brother die and just runs into an electronics store to get a phone call so he can call his girlfriend back). The crazed run after the girlfriend might have played well if the guy was crazed but he wasn't. They played it like what he was doing made sense. My friend leaned over to me in the middle of the film (after the girl got bitten) and asked, "Are they all Navy SEALS?" These four were ridiculously cool and calm for a huge fucking monster attacking their city. On top of that, they deal with some pretty gnarly injuries and just shake them off. Honestly, it reminded me of the silly horror film my friend was in "Nightmare Man" in which one of the jokes was that in the midst of being attacked by a killer, one couple would keep stop to talk about their relationship.

And how were you pissed at the ending? How else would it end? You knew from the beginning that they didn't live because the footage was found at what used to be Central Park.

Halfway through the movie I and most of the audience I watched with tapped out and was waiting for it to end. (which we thought it did at the first cut to black. Someone yelled THE END but then the movie started again and everyone just kind of grumbled about it not being over)

This was a great concept but, to me, it failed miserably.

great concept
poor character decisions
IF this was a spoof on monster movies then maybe he could have gotten away with those ridiculously poor plot points
but there wasn't a damn thing real about any of the decisions those characters made

*****spoiler*****
could i have gotten a wink, a nod
something to tell me JJ your joking right??
lets run INTO a leaning building for my NOT girlfriend who's VERY LIKELY dead (oh lets not touch on the fact SHE WASN'T!?!?) and skip running for safety 50 billion times??? yes it's a monster movie which are not based in reality, but have some sort of consistency if you are going to use a technique to suspend the fiction illusion then have your characters do SOMETHING to aid in the suspension, you defeated your purpose and put me right back into 'oh, yeah it's a monster movie' and monster movie characters make incredibly dumb decisions more than once apparently...ugh
*****spoiler*****

so my question does good cgi execution
a clever camera shooting
add up to a good movie
stupendously heavy in weak plot points?

my vote is still out
those characters annoyed me THAT MUCH
but that monster was woah

The shooting style seemed to point to a "realer" monster movie but the film not only kept the same cliches but it elevated them; they took the horror cliche of "Don't run up the stairs" to a new level (both literally, in the height of the building, and figuratively, as in it made even less sense in this film than it does in most horror films when people are running away or are panicked).

I wouldn't be surprised at that at all, a series of movies would probably be overdoing it but that could happen.
There could be dozens of documents and documented footage that was either official or later confiscated by officials, all type of directions to spin off or just to piece everything together from that night.

It did what a good monster picture should do. It makes you jump and cover your eyes a few times. There is one really sappy moment late where someone called out bullshit and the whole theater cracked up.

because at the end of the film, the entire audience let out a collective groan. There was a pause and then everyone started laughing at how stupid the film was.

There were a couple of cool moments but overall it was a pathetic film. Unlikable characters on a ridiculous mission. It was like a high school production of Godzilla narrated by Bill Paxton's character from Aliens.

One of the reasons I went to the midnight show was because I thought the film would be better with a fired up crowd that was cheering or screaming or at least jumping from fright (rather than the matinee "Oh, the night vision shot was a rip-off of "The Descent" crowd). Unfortunately it backfired since everyone was pretty disappointed from the get-go.

I agree that the last act of I Am Legend was disappointing but, to me, 99% of Cloverfield was "Follow the Butterfly" cringe-worthy. Hell, even the set-up of the tunnel fight was silly to me. "The rats are running away. Let's stop and think about this for a second. Let me turn on night vision. I'm sure there won't be any monsters near us when I get it on."

you're wife was right...if you look at the trailer and you see her behind silhouette, her body is swelling up and she's screaming she explodes..clearly, being bitten by the monster had that kind of affect on humans...

YET, am i the only one who thought it was weird that Lily (Jessica Lucas) got JUST as jacked up..hell, they ALL did. why didn't THEY experience the same affects?

it was a letdown..i reviewed it at my blog (filmgeekchronicles.blogspot.com) I mean, monster movies are fine..but there's nothing wrong with a LITTLE bit of backstory...we know the monster clearly isn't "natural", but where did it come from..was it an alien life form that landed in the polluted water and grew up quicker than usual b/c of the pollution in the river...was it man-made? etc.

i'm not expecting oscar worthy theatrics..but some simple backstory to at least describe where the monster came from would have allowed me tof ully "enjoy the hype" and have a good time..

i saw it at an advance screening last tuesday and people weren't feeling it...the ending came and everyone kinda said it was a waste of 90 minutes....

JJ Abrams is now 0 for 2: MI:3 bombed, and though Cloverfield will make the money back, it wont be the $100+ million blockbuster paramount was rumored to have expected it to be the first couple of weekends...i hope he doesnt fuck up the upcoming Star Trek remake, the Fringe tv show he's working on, the Hunter Scott project and the rumored ALIAS movie....

but Cloverfield just didnt do it for me...

and yea, i thought it was DUMB as fuck that they would run into a blacked out subway tunnel knowing full well that those minimonsters could be in there and THINK about what they should do??? tha hell? it got so back that i kinda wanted them all to be ripped apart by the minimonsters...seriously. that would have made it more fun and interesting....

not trying to defend the dumbassery that the characters decided to partake in, but the only one that knew there were minimonsters was Hud, and he DIDN'T SAY SHIT. he was the only one out of the four that saw the TV footage in the electronics store.

those characters made the worst survival decisions EVER. after the attack in the subway, why didn't anyone stop to pick up a weapon just in case more showed up?

criticisms aside, i did like the movie quite a bit.

Overall, it was an interesting stylistic exercise in single-camera shooting, video editing, and acting with green screen. And it's not like there were these sky-high expectations, either.

The characters weren't particularly interesting (and for those who would argue, "well, we're not there for the characters, we're there for the killing and stuff getting blowed up," that's great, but if that's the case, then the filmmakers should have just gotten right to it instead of spending 20-25 minutes on some vapid melodrama). But I will cop to liking the killing and the stuff getting blowed up, so there you go.

Now I'm sorry, but I just found the plot device of my mans on a quest to get Beth to be a little too ridiculous. If the last words I say to a girl are on some mean shit, and motherfuckers are coming to eradicate my ass, then it's, "oh well, guess I gotta live with them bad last words to ol' girl." And yeah, I understand that we'd seen their relationship on the old clips, but I repeat: there's a big nasty killer alien bearing down on the city. Baby doll is just going to have to be a Big-Earl-Partridge-of-Magnolia-sized regret, because my black ass is outta there on the first helicopter out. I just didn't buy it.

Now, I *might* have been able to go with it if she were, say, his kid sister who was new to NYC and got caught in her friend's high rise and he had to go get her. But even then, I still might be on some, "uh... I will carry on the family name" steeze and got out of there...

Again, I can't front on the effects, they were great. And the scary thriller action sequences were okay, with the highlight of course being the one in the subway tunnel. But they kept making it hard for me to get on board, first with the long party sequence then with the Quest for Beth plot device.

As a stylistic exercise, it was very cool. As a story, it wasn't that hot. But I'm getting the feeling that there's more to the story, and that we may be seeing more down the line... and I wouldn't be "mad" if we did.

Also, a note on so-called "haters" and "critics" who "just didn't get it." Could it be that they understood full well what the movie was and what it was trying to be, and still didn't like it? I mean, is that allowed? Or are we really playing the "you're too old/out-of-touch/pretentious to understand this" card again?

Not only that dude went off for the girl but that his friends (including someone he barely knew) are all willing to follow him around even after their crew starts dying off and little monsters start going after them.

But - I like the general premise and I thought the stylistic execution was very good.

Oh, and yes everyone except HUD was unlikeable. That was probably the biggest drawback for me.

They also could have easily come up with a better 'objective' than trying to save some broad he slept with once that should have been dead.

Given all the hype and buildup, people were expecting this transcendent reinvention of the monster movie. But I honestly don't think reinvention is what Abrams was aiming for: He just wanted to make a traditional monster movie, cliches and all, with the story told from a different perspective. Without the found footage gimmick, yeah, the movie would've sucked, but that's what made it, IMO, so cool. In short, it was all about being an exercise in style, and as such, I think it succeeded.

I mean, OF COURSE the characters are going to do shit that makes no sense in the real world. They're trapped in a fucking monster movie! If they acted the way normal people would have, they would've followed the military and gotten the fuck out of the city within the first 10 minutes of the attack, and thus you'd have no movie. Anyway, if you're going to nit-pick about motivation in a film like this, you might as well call bullshit on the whole concept, because I would have dropped that camera around the time the bridge collapsed. And by the way, that is one HELL of a durable camera.

Anyway, I had a helluva good time seeing this in the theater, so it lived up to my expectations.

That's fine. But I don't think you can say people overthink a movie when you readily admit that the movie itself sucked. Unless you are a fan of the genre, it has nothing at all to offer. It's a one trick pony; take away the camera gimmick and you've gone nothing but a b-movie.

And to be honest, I don't even think they got the most out of the stylistic approach. Part of what makes that POV/camera option interesting is building tension but there was nearly none in the film. You saw the monster early on and then it was just a guy running (or actually, usually just strolling) around with a camera.

The stylistic decision was great but how they utilized it, to me, was lackluster.

even good monster movies have quasi-semi-demi realistic plots
when they attempt to bring any sort of 'realism' to the flick
and again jj tried to bring a realistic device to the movie
'hey it's real we found this camera and look at what happened'
now the entire movie is suspended on the 'belief' that this can happen or did happen
and the belief is shot to shit
because the characters and their motives are weak beyond belief
the minimum amount of motivation in a plot is not nitpicking
at certain level even with horror movies
in this day and age is de rigor
as a matter of fact most horror movies USE the 'nitpicking' of motivation to their advantage
this would be why characters run
why do they run?
they are scared
basic horror motivation

and NO character KNOWINGLY runs into danger
WITHOUT some simple basic heavy emotional reasoning
and a NOT girlfriend you fucked once a month ago
is not reasoning

most characters at least act with some level of sophistication
because modern day characters and movies goers will have seen most average plot point and understand them
it's as simple as see dick run from monster
this was
see dick tie his shoe (that actually has velcro strips, yes these characters were THAT stupid) and run into the arms of said monster
come on man

When you are born, you cry, and the world rejoices. Live so that when you die, you rejoice, and the world cries.

His best friend of 18 years is a super fine chick and he just recently got to smash finally. His brother just died and there's a good 90% chance he will too just trying to escape. Plus if he does get out alive he's accepting a job in Japan, home of the giant monster attack. I could see saying fuck it and going on a mission for a chick you love especially if you're probably gonna die either way

I think everyone can agree that the film (as a film) was below average. Some people were entertained by other aspects of the movie, some people weren't.

I was bored stiff and I never jumped (and I usually fall for most scares). Besides the stylistic "I'm right in the middle of it" feel, the movie offered zero. Cloverfield was like an hour and a half of the closing credits of Dawn of the Dead (which IMO was a good "horror" movie).

In the end, it was a bad movie told in an interesting style. And for some people, that's enough of a distraction. And that's not a condemnation of anyone. I like a lot of terrible movies. But at the same time, I'm not going to stand up and say "You're crazy, that's movie's great! You need to learn to relax and have a good time."

I don't watch that many horror or monster movies but this one gave me all I was asking for plus more. Tell me which "monster" movies you consider to the the good ones though. I'm just curious.

>I think everyone can agree that the film (as a film) was

I tend to look for & expect different things depending on the type of film. So even "as a film" it was above average for me.

I've only seen the parts in 40 year old virgin so I can't comment on that.

Thinking back, there aren't a lot of great "monster" films. If you count zombies, then you could go 28 Days Later or Dawn of the Dead (hell, I liked Land of the Dead better than this movie) but as for big ass monsters tearing shit up, the only one that comes to mind is Jurassic Park.

And I see how people can like it for the style or the cgi (I'm just not that excited about seeing a monster), but for me a film rests on story and character, both of which were silly in this film. I really felt like you could change a few lines here and there and the movie could have been a comedy like The Host.

The most recent one I could think of would be Peter Jackson's King Kong remake. Which was cool but almost had too much story for me. Jurassic Park did have the perfect balance tho.

True. I've been thinking about checking out The Host. I didn't even know it was a comedy tho. I also didn't expect Cloverfield to be either & so it reminded me of the 1st time I saw Scream & not knowing what to expect from that one either.

Based on the buildup, I wanted an experience, and that's honestly what I feel I got. So I'm not judging it on any of the things I typically judge a movie on, which is why I can say, "Well, as a film, yeah, it was sub-par, but I still had a good time sitting in a theater and watching the thing unfold." Yeah, I thought the characters were vapid (I didn't think we'd get even the thin layer of development we did), the motivations ridiculous (admittedly, I wasn't expecting any kind of bullshit love story -- thought it would just be a "we need to get the fuck out of Manhattan" story), the dialogue dumb. But in this one particular case, I didn't care about that shit. I thought the concept was cool when I heard about it months back, and that's what drew me in to see the movie. It's definitely a one trick pony, but as a stylistic experiment, IMO it worked, and a lot of why it did, to me, has to do with the visuals, which I thought were tremendous for the most part. If the monster had sucked, my opinion on the movie may have been entirely different.

I'm not trying to convince anyone they should love "Cloverfield" or judge people who didn't like it at all. But as someone who hardly ever goes to the theater anymore -- let alone for a "popcorn movie" like this -- I didn't feel cheated.

yea, that whole "we gotta get beth" shit was really stupid to me. in a time like that the guy w/ the camera or someone should be smacked dude around and be like "fuck that son! we gotta move" etc.

i mean, that shit was crazy to me. i'm a little irritated that he mourned beth being hurt more than him losing his brother etc.

and can we not forgot short (the fine chick, forgot her name) running thru the whole movie in fucking heels???????

i mean it was what it was, but a weekend where i saw "there will be blood" before this, it paled in comparison.

it is what it is though.

action/horror scenes were up to par - frightening at times eg, use of 9/11 elements. Overall still run of the mill.

See this in a theater w/ bell & whistle av

The characters were the big let down. The film focused too much on characters I did not care for (excluding Jessica Lucas DIME)

Whoever said that "old school monster movie with new threads" or whatever was dead-on. It was a standard monster-destroys-city flick, just told from a different (and IMO refreshing) perspective and with very good effects.

The characters were meh. Hud was kinda funny, Rob and Marlena were unrealistic as hell (Marlena for following a bunch of people she doesn't know to find a person she doesn't know and Rob for doing his whole dumb quest in the first place,) but it didn't bother me that much.

The monster and spider things looked genuinely terrifying and I didn't feel like it dragged on too much. And I give it credit for the way it ended.

As for a sequel, I'm not sure why they'd do that. I don't know if there's that much more story to tell.

If they did make one, I think it should run parallel to this one. There was ALOT of shit going one during Rob's dumb ass quest. You could hear the shit going down while they were running around. It should start from that "incident" a Coney Island.Maybe they would focus on the military fighting the monster.

STUPENDOUS SPOILER

I went the second time after "First Sundays" to catch the tail end, and THIS TIME, I noticed the object that fell into the ocean on the very last scene which shows the end of the tape and them at coney island or something. I saw the thing fall from the sky and into the ocean by the boat. If you go back, check for it

That it's never a good idea to follow around the dumb white guy in a horror movie who's on a quest to save the girl/explore something. If it was me, I'd be peacing out right at the beginning and Cloverfield would be about 15 minutes long.

I liked it for what it was, a good B monster movie. Obviously you could shoot some plot holes in almost any monster story. Let's start with the part where a giant fucking sea monster is coming to destroy NYC. The only thing that really bothered me was Marlena following them around the whole damn time when she barely knew these people. She could have easily peaced out at several points.

But the intensity was good, the action was good, and the monster didn't disappoint. It would have been a much bigger letdown if the monster sucked, but it was pretty badass. The girls were all easy on the eyes too. With this kind of movie that's pretty much what I ask for. A solid B.

...so you've never stuck with a friends on their weay to do something stupid? i followed a friend to fight a bunch fo guys with guns once. thats illogical, but i did it because i didnt want him going at it alone. people make irrational decisions when their emotions are running high.

...but these also happened to be the only people she knew at the time. a giant monster attacks new york, everything is chaos, these are the only people in the direct vincinity that you have any relationship to whatsoever. ansd wewe only know that she doesnt knew rob very much, and met hud a few times, but that other chick could have been her friend. she organized the thing.

between the unbreakable camera that survived a helicopter crash and a monster attack and a bridge collapse unscathed

and Hud's ability to shoot with said unbreakable camera while accomplishing physical feats that others needed full concentration and both hands to do

and his determination to "document" that went over the line several times and that no decent human being would do

that movie insulted my intelligence so much
it made it difficult to enjoy the explosions and monsters and shit

ugh

the bit about the end is cool tho

You KNOW if some shit like this happened...some dumb asses would likely try this shit. They may not be dumb enough to film the entire thing but...hell, never underestimate stupidity.

On a side note, Hud had the camera around his neck so when he was crossing the building, it kinda pointed down and bounced as he used both hands. THAT much I saw.

But I had the same reservations boogs, but for 'monster' flicks you gotta let some shit slide...even if they tried to give it a 'real' feel.

Yeah i thought it was kind of week. I am thinking they asked the people who did the mist if they could borrow some monster animations and threw it into a movie where they could be seen a little bit more visibly. HUD had funny parts, but yes his devotion to documenting the evening was ridiculous. I also found it hillarious how old girl was impaled through the shoulder and maybe even a lung, but after they get out the building she is good to go. This movie did insult people's intelligence. Laughable more than anything, bettet than I am Legend though.

*SPOILERS*

After they get out of the helicopter crash (which they survived and were perfectly fine aside from a leg injury and a couple scraches?) how do they not see the monster until its right behind them. Don't you think you would notice a 300 foot monster coming towards you with a little bit of time to prep yourself? And there is no way anybody would be able to just sit htere and film it without freaking out and attempting to get the fuck away. I'da dropped that camera maybe 25 minutes into the movie

I definitely thought the scale of that monster at the end looked inaccurate compared to how huge he was in the other parts of the film. And considering we never really get a solid look at the big guy throughout the film, it's hard to say for sure that it was the main monster who killed him.

Sure it had its corny moments, like the camera being held the entire time, but shit, then we wouldn't have a movie to watch. The same argument could be made about the group going back for that girl.

It was one of the more entertaining movies I've seen in a really long time.

But gotdamnit, there's just some stuff you can't look past

Even in a "popcorn movie"

And I mean, it's basic stuff that takes away from the entertainment

We're not asking for a labyrinthine, Bourne-esque plot

But if I can't cosign dude's simple reason for questing, then I ain't gonna be fully invested in what happens

Therefore, I ain't gonna have as much "fun" as I should

That's just the way it is

I just wish cats would stop trying to turn this into another "the out-of-touch critics who don't 'get it' vs. the masses who just want to be entertained" discussion

I mean, is it not possible to be be amused at all the stuff that got blowed up real good yet still find faults with the storytelling?

...and about myself and many others actually liking it? How many arguments have you heard where people argue matters of taste as if its factual? I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, not everything i encounter is always explained and the origin isnt even important in this for me. But, again, thats my preference. You needed other means of gratification from this flick, and thats fine. But you just cant please everybody. I also enjoyed The Blair Witch project and many people didnt. I guess that movie was made for me and that demographic

I'm normally not into Godzilla/King Kong type movies, but this one was definitely worth the watch. As someone mentioned a bit earlier, the party scene was a bit long, but after that it was non stop action and suspense. a few corny/"why the fuck are they doing that" moments, but other than that I wasn't disappointed. The way that it was shot, the internet sites/trailers, and the fact that you still don't know what the f*ck the monster was or why this all happened made it all very interesting.

the character that played hud in cloverfield was the son of one of the main characters on carpoolers.

he consistently got the biggest laughs on carpoolers... and i think seeing him in cloverfield and recognizing him right away made my experience of cloverfield a little different than others, as i was laughing heartily at almost everything hud did.

definitely a very good popcorn movie. for that i give it 3 stars.

Dude fukks his 18-year friend.
He doesn't call her for a month afterwards.
He's about to go to Japan.
If she didn't come to his party, he'd have never seen her AGAIN.
EVAR.
She comes to the party with her new dude.
He disses the shyt out of her the last time he sees her.

Then, all of a sudden he's so broken up over ol' girl that he risks his life and those of his friends in order to go across town in the face of a monster invasion for a girl who may not even be alive?

Riiiiiight.

Other than that, and how dumb the characters were, I liked it. I'll pick up the DVD.

The ew article says that it's averaging a "C" from those who've seen it which is odd as the audience I saw it with seemed pretty into it. But then again, somebody on here said the crowd they saw it with hated it. I kinda hope that they don't do a sequel as they're pretty much crappy as a rule.

I enjoyed the movie a lot, however the crowd that I saw it with was really unhappy with it. A group of teenagers were booing and saying they wanted their money back when walking out of the theatre. Other people were complaining also.

But chances are that these highschool kids were expecting to see the next Transformers movie.

i caught the 420 friday matinee instead of going at night so there were no teenagers or kids in there with us. but it was a full house of 20 somethings and older adults. so no booing or jeers.

i had some bad wtf momments while watching and some boredom here and there. mainly due to being at that party for so damn long. and i was a little mad at hud's scary ass for not point the camera at the monster when the army was attacking it on the street. but after thinking about it he was just scared shitless. i probably wouldn't be trying to get a shot of it either.

i think that for some people they had to go into it knowing something about the movie and how it was shot and all to really get into it. for most people who were just sitting at home and were like what do you want to see. and just go into it blind not knowing a little about the production of it probably would have been disappointed.

What more do people want from a monster attacks NYC movie??? i enjoyed the hell out of this film. i can excuse the character flaws or lack of believability. i can understand that the handi-cam effect makes some people nauseous. but im on paxil and i got my shit under control.

I'll likely never watch it again, but I liked it. We all (should have) know how it was gonna end, especially given the opening frame...so I don't get the complaining. And yes, while the plot device was semi lame...I turned off my brain and just enjoyed.

Am I the only one who thought those mini creatures were way scarier than the big dude? At least you know where that big thing is when you're being chased by it.

Nope. I'm scared of spiders general & those things resembled em way too much. I'm glad they through those in. Certainly wouldn't have been as good a movie w/o em.

issues are believability of some parts, mainly when they weren't running in the tunnel as soon as they saw the rats running or hearing whatever that was back there. I could believe their going after Beth.

The black dude with the fro who was on the roof with everyone else, hulled ass out of mid-town Manhattan after he saw those explosions hit...
Two things that would never, never, never, ever, ever happen if this was a real event (SPOILERS ahead)...
The main character would not risk his own life along with his friends live for a girl that he was just dealing with; especially after she has the audacity to bring some random ass dude to his going away party. I mean, it just wouldn't happen...
The pretty black girl that was dating his brother, sure as hell wouldn't risk her own life by going back to save the other girl. One thing, black women are for the most part family oriented. I mean ole girl wasn't on the phone with not one family member nor did she mention anything about them. In real life she would have hulled ass like the brother and been safe somewhere else...

the only thing that I felt sad about was the fact that the suspension cables on the Brooklyn Bridge snapped and killed a lot of people, now that was unavoidable because most rational people would tried to escape that way....

Plus the monster just kept running into these characters, it kinda made it unreal since the monster decided to be around everywhere they tried to escape, especially the copter scene in the end which was just too far fetched...

besides that, it was a roller coaster of a film, but it didn't convince me enough to be taken seriously/ or to care about the characters....

On The Lookout 4:
some new music. WTF is going on this year?

You Think? I didnt think so. They have to run into the monster at certain points just to make the movie good.

SPOILER*****

I was really happy that the Monster didn't attack when they were on the roof. A narrow escape in that scene would of been really weak.

I liked the fact that they didnt show vulnerability to the Monster, There were no almost gotta moments (which are usually all monster movies consist of).

The little monsters were scary as hell and it was nice that they didnt over use them.

That entire part was very weak, it seemed that the monster was much smaller than before and much less angry. It seemed strange that the monster wasnt concerned about the other two at all.

Although when you consider it, that's kinda weird. Cause the monster attacked Hud from above.

So if the monster bit him in half, it means he spit the legs out somewhere else, or swallowed Hud's bottom half and spit him out from the waist up. Both kind of imply that the monster wasn't hungry, it was just trying to totally ruin everybody's shit forever.

But really I think for shock value they just wanted to show beyond any doubt that Hud was dead, for emotional impact, considering he was pretty much the only interesting and/or likable character in the whole movie.

But nah, it didn't make sense. Anybody with half a brain would've dropped the damn camera and took off, even if the monster was going to get them anyway. There's no way someone would've just stood there like "Hey I gotta get this close up..."

I agree the end with Hud filming the monster (which apparently tip-toed up behind him) was odd but so was most of the film. And I agree that I thought he got bitten in half.

And I can't remember it, but how did the main guy get the camera? Did he actually go and pick it up after Hud was bitten in half?

It was a cool idea to do the handheld approach mixed in with high end special effects. But this ended up being both the best and worst part of the movie.

- I couldnt get past how fucking retarded this guy is for going back to save his girl, whom was likely already dead or couldnt be saved. Especially after seeing the fucking monster and nearly dying. And yet his 3 other moron friends are all for it as well.

- So not only are we following 4 idiots around, but on top of that we have to make them all not-likeable? I honestly didnt care if any of them died, and really only wanted to see if they could kill the monster or what ended up happening.

- The intro scenes at the party should have been cut by about 5-10 min, or at least be more informative.

- One of the problems of doin it handheld is that we know what they know. So for instance, when Marlena dies and we dont know if she blew up or was shot or what. Hud is like "what just happened!?!?!?" and we never find out because HE never finds out. And its not too bad because the movie is telling it through a "regular guy" perspective, but as a movie-goer, you want to know a little more about the plot than be in the dark the whole time.

Overall, it was fun. The action was great and it was suspenseful. But all this talk about it redefining the genre or it being much more than "just a monster movie" I felt was bullshit. It WAS just a monster movie at the end of the day.

The Host was much better imo, thats still the GOAT monster movie imo.

also, i cant believe how fucking dumb some of the ppl in my theater were. on the way out some of them were like "wait... they all died at the end??" i was lookin at them like were you not watching the giant screen in front of your eyes for the past hour and a half?

In response to Reply # 0

I only make the comparison because I bet that was the movie that inspired this one. No one is watching either for the plots or the characters, where neither movie really shines. But both seemed to really go for that "What would it feel like if it happened to you?" type of atmosphere.

See, I think they probably thought the home-filmed camera stuff was the way to take us even deeper the experience, but I think it actually worked against that feeling--just because such cameras don't really simulate the human eye. The human eye sees more, is steadier and more focused. So instead of constantly feeling like I was there with them, I was always reminded that I'm not there with them, and it removed me from the intensity.

Anyway, I just loved that feeling coming out of War of the Worlds when I just expected to look up and see tripods marching outside of the theater.

Cloverfield was okay. It was fun once the action started, but nothing really stuck with me long after. Which can't really surprise anyone, since besides the filming gimmick, the filmmakers seemed dead set against offering anything new. Maybe it's not fair that the night before Cloverfield I saw the Orphanage and the night after I saw There Will Be Blood. There are two movies that terrify and resonate. Being as unremarkable as it was, poor Cloverfield never had a chance.

Im one of the few who actually loved War of The Worlds (except for the ending) but I actually felt that film had emotional resonance. Overall, that movie was way more disturbing to me than Cloverfield. Spielberg's film managed to rise above its genre.

That being said, I feel like Cloverfield was ALOT of fun and a very clever take on the monster film. Id have no problem giving it a B+/A- but I went in expecting nothing more than a fun popcorn flick.

I don't remember exactly how it started but that film established more character in one brief moment (a father in a Yankee hat wanting to play catch and his son, putting on a Red Sox hat, refusing) than the first 20 minutes of Cloverfield.

Also, I think Cloverfield needed a scene like the bodies floating down the river and maybe even one like the Tim Robbins moment.

Other than that, I think I'd take Cloverfield over WOTW

Although I love Tom Cruise, I never once believed in War of the Worlds that I was watching a real family.

In terms of special effect execution and visual ingenuity, WOTW wins. Yet despite the individual actors being better than any of the actors in Cloverfield, they just never clicked, never had a "cast chemistry."

Plus, nothing in terms of stupid plot points in Cloverfield can EVER beat the kid surviving in WOTW, lol.

SPOILER!!!!

it's simple as day...boy and girl were in love, boy and girl break-up, boy and girl meet up again and get into a heated arguement, girl leaves angry, disaster strikes with the emergence of the monster, girl calls boy pleading for help, boy...still disillustioned with love and gone crazy with the lost of another loved one (his brother), goes off trying to come back to her, boy find girl, boy and girl love is rekindled right before their ultimate demise...the end...with the final flashback to remind us how deep they were in love in the 1st place...thus bringing the story full circle!!!

i think you believe it to be inconsistent because you didn't expect this to be actually a LOVE story as the monster flick being the decoy

and the handheld camera provided suspense in a way a normally shot movie could never do.

I didn't hear it myself, and my friends and I stayed just to hear it. But as we were leaving the theater, we overheard some people that were in the front rows saying that the line was "It's still alive."

Which is still lame if you ask me. For a movie like this, with such a build-up around it, they should have at least had twenty seconds of some real cool footage after the credits. Even something small would have pacified a few of the MANY people leaving the theater going "That was some bullshit..."

Having said that, it would be really funny to me if they made a Blair Witch 2-style sequel to this.

I actually think this was one of the coolest aspects of the film. You (the audience are basically experiencing the whole "event" with the characters. So in the end when they die, guess what, they never knew what the monster was, where it came from, if the bomb actually worked, was there more than one etc, etc.

The interesting thing that the guy said was that "if you are watching this video then you probably know more than we do"

I think it it was a great unconventional way to end a movie. Too many times, Hollywood falls into this formula of having to have someone survive and wrap up the story. They do this so much so that I begin to dread that point in movies because you're always waiting for that, what I like to call the "Last 10 minutes Wrap-up rule" When it gets to that point, particularly in comedies the movies become uninteresting and unique plots become formulaic.

I liked the movie for what it was, though I am partial to huge giant robot monster destroying the world. That's why War of the Worlds (both versions)still freaks me out to this day.

...

my thoughts,

peace.

The movie was good for that (if nothing else).
I don't usually go all "OH SHIT" at a movie, but this one packed a powerful punch.
Yes, the main characters were dumb fucks, but whatever.
Good movie.
Shit, all these New York City disaster/doomsday/apocalyptic films are startin to fuck with me.
lol

glad i didn't pay to watch this shit.

the blair witch camera work is horrendous, but it
does kinda make sense being that the DoD confiscated
the tape

i'm watching it now tho, so i'll be back w/ commentary
and spoilers and other thoughts...

very intense in places
i liked the blair witch camera view
Hudd's death was oh so anti-climatic
i was expecting blood or sumn, the monster kinda
just gummed him to death. wtf?

oh and i love the fact that the black/indian girl lived in the
end.

pretty good overall, i still wouldn't pay to see this
shit in the theatre tho. and the thing dropping in the
water when they in coney island was an excellent
being that the same camera saw the thing land on earth
and then filmed the carnage that it caused.

well, if you consider that in the movie "independence day" they nuked hell out of that alien ship and it didn't die...or the idea that cockroaches can still survive a nuke...it's not that impossible..i mean FUCK it's a MONSTER!!!

2nd the impact of the nuke didn't effect the cam, especially since it gotten buried under rubble.....and for all of those that question the indestructability of the camcorder...we DON'T know how the cam look from the outside!!! that cam is probably beat up to hell, but still running....just like if you get caught in a huge car collison, and your ride is beat up to hell, but it still can drive...we don't know whut's the actual condition of the camera!!! all we know that it was still running

lastly, one more answer: radiation suits...they DO exist, ya know

Critiquing Cloverfield in 3 Easy Steps:
http://cinebeats.blogsome.com/2008/01/26/critiquing-cloverfield-in-3-easy-steps/#more-209

I read this write up and it was a pretty good read. I think a few of you might enjoy it
There's a lot of blogs, sites and imdb that filled in some story things and all that since I didn't really follow the viral campaign a whole lot.

The characters werent the most endearing, the motivations were suspect as fuck(I understand duke has loved this chick for 18 years and just got around to banging her....but there's no way anyone tries to attempt that rescue. Furthermore, the fuck is Marlena doing following them?), Hud somehow got chomped from the legs even thought the monster came at his grill?, the opening scenes were far too long-winded, how did the characters not notice the mugfucking monster chilling in Central Park when they got out of the chopper?, and why the fuck didnt someone use their shirt or sleeve to stop Marlena's blood loss? lol.

There were obvious flaws(I'll ignore the camer life and shit like that since there have to be SOME concessions in this type of movie), but for the most part, I still really enjoyed the hell out of it. It was so intense and atmospheric, the effects were great, and just a great stylistic experience. I didnt think the monster would actually be shown to that extent but there were some great scenes with it especially when the b-51 brought heat, and just watching it tear through Manhattan was fun. I really liked the fresh take with the handheld view of a monster movie, it just made it feel that much more engrossing. Lastly, those little mugfuckers were scarier and more dangerous than the main cat imo....I mean cotdamn, those cats were 1-1 warfare with some serious agility whereas at least you could see the big duke and attempt to maneuver out of his path.

O yeh, anyone else feel like they were playing a FPS? Shit would make for a sick videogame.....it would be like fighting a organic scarab throughout a major US city, and instead of Beth, you are trying to save Kortana. Enjoyed it thoroughly, def worth watching in the theatres. I am pissed that I missed out on the black object dropping in that last scene though. All in all, good show!

I get the whole POV that they were going for, which was a great concept. But at the end, it was still a love story wrapped around a monster flick (lame). And the biggest problem?

THAT FUCKING CAMERA!

5 minutes after shit hit the fan I had a headache. 10 minutes in and I wanted to throw up. I can almost forgive everything else, but if I leave the movie with a headache needing to call Earl, it's not a good thing in my book

I actually got over the camera pretty quick. I get motion sickness, but the whole view worked for me.

like everyone has mentioned, I could not wait for all the characters to die. and that was the biggest flaw -- you never end up caring about their survival b/c they took the "dumbass in a crisis" cliche to new levels.

what they should have done, is rework the love story and have the characters escape the middle of NYC instead of running into it.

Stylistically, it was interesting. Everything else was pretty bad -- if this was shot from third-person, NOBODY would care.

I'll never watch it again.

Why haven't people caught that yet? It would have taken me two seconds of being grossed out, then running my a** off!

I saw this with five friends in theaters and when we got out we all agreed that if some shit happened like that in Philly we're going back for whoever. Remember Rob didn't go back for ole' girl till his own brother died trying to cross the bridge.

1. We're going to die anyway
2. We don't know how bad it is anywhere else
3. We might as well stay together

I mean really it might be some Independence Day or Signs shit with Aliens every fucking where waiting for cats. I'm staying where I at least know the lay of the land.
