"What cinema arguments are on THAT LEVEL for you?"
Sun Apr-17-11 09:22 PM by Invisiblist

Personally, I think that anyone who likes any of the Harry Potter movies better than Prisoner of Azkaban is completely fucked in the head. You know how some people are one-issue voters, as in they won't have any friends who tolerate drug legalization or evolution in schools or abortion?

That's me and Azkaban. You and I can only go so far in movie convos if Azkaban isn't your #1 Potter flick?

What's your thing like that?
*IMPORTANT* This is not where you should hash out these arguments. Just clue us in on your thing.

particularly about doing the absolute OPPOSITE in certain films, and getting a pass for it because other than the offending material, they are well-directed, easily digestible films. (I'm not sure where my beef is with it exactly, with him as director, or with the movie studios that forced the issue -- Paramount(?) but it's been there for a good long time).

They made the emotional apex of the series - Dumbledore's death - seem almost meaningless. Cedric Diggory's death was more dramatic than Dumbledore's (THAAAT'S MY BOOOOOOY!!!)

When you think about it, Cedric's death really signals the official change in tone for the series. Up until that point, no one actually had died. And I have to disagree about Dumbledore's death seeming meaningless. The effects of his death (and absence) can be felt in Deathly Hallows.

I say HBP is the best not only cause its the climax of the series but it's the one where the darkness of the story really takes a toll on all of the characters. This is the only film where anyone takes Draco seriously (as a character and actor).

Unlike OotP, this film didn't have to be as action-oriented either. Yates nailed it with this one.

I've had people more than once FORCE me to sit through some of his his asinine, poorly written, worse directed, awkwardly shot and acted pictures developed from the worldview of someone who doesn't know shit about the world outside of the black southern Christian experience; the others that I saw on my own accord weren't any better.

It seems downright strange that Tyler Perry is the second or third richest person in the American entertainment industry. I presume it's because he's drawing four salaries every time he does a picture, and the movies are so cheap that even though they don't make much money they still turn profits (well, some of them anyway - sorry, "For Colored Girls").

Still, I'm perplexed. And yes, a little mad. Much as I think his films are far too slick, I'd've had George Tillman become Tyler Perry rather than Tyler Perry.

most people who know me know I don't "support" wack shit. So it's not a matter of me sitting through some dumb shit just because it's a 'Black' Movie. So most of my peeps DARE not come to me with THAT shit.

What really creeps ME out is how people who's opinions and viewpoints I otherwise respect actually spend money on that shit KNOWING it sucks.

"well...it wasn't that good, but I just like his movies...so-and-so was bad in it, but I just like TP movies."

I can't believe how conditioned horror movie fans are these days. After over a decade of cornball ass films these bastards will try to argue that the shit wasn't supposed to be scary to begin with.

I blame these people for the wack ass state of the genre.

and general the "popcorn flick" catch-all. It's an excuse for horribly written, nonsensical bullshit.

but the few times I've posted here, one time, regarding that hack of a director, was the only time I got to OkaySports level cussin'.

I don't care if Michael Bay is directing a cinema adaptation of Paddington Bear... that bumwipe would have the stuffed teddy bear all chavved out speaking in Cockney and rolling through Blackpool in a tarted-up Austin Metro with a copy of Heat magazine on the dash, and because adults aren't supposed to care about the content of popcorn flicks, it's a non-issue?

that dude is worse than an army of Tyler Perrys in a convoy of Hummer H2s, with free flowing bottles of Nuvo being passed through the passenger seats.

I genuinely like The Rock, Transformers 1, and Bad Boys 1.

I liked Bad Boys 2 retroactively (probably being a contrarian) because it's intentionally and unintentionally over-the-top.

And I really hate every other film I've seen of his.

His films are not my style at all but after seeing Hot Fuzz, I rented Bad Boys II and just howled.

You said you liked it? Fine, maybe you had a good day or a really nice date or something, something that influenced you into liking it. Maybe you just were sort of half paying attention to the film, and its more dramatic moments convinced you the film was well-acted or important or whatever. Fine. I can dismiss that.

But liking it enough to buy on DVD? And keep it on your shelf?

Man... just no.

people literally tried to convince me that matt dillon's character was PERFECTLY fine for basically raping christine via the digit molestation scene...

that, coupled with folk telling me how I was a racist because I had so many issues with the film...

makes me SCOFF and hock a faux loogie at ANYONE who likes that movie...or tries to tell you you're a racist for criticizing the film

i on't care that Thandie Newton (who I love as an actress, shitty roles and not shitty roles) was in it...

that movie was HOT STANKALICIOUS, RADIOACTIVE, ASHY FUNK BOX ASS...

and Paul Haggis can eat a crusty, roach infested DICK for putting that shit out...AND having it win over Brokeback Mountain in damn near MOST of those oscar categories.

because people in the audience were in freak out mode, talking all through that scene: "Yo, he gonna shoot the little girl?!"/"Aww damn! that's fucked up!", etc. (the only redeeming thing about this movie was seeing it in the bronx...COMEDY! LOL!)

then it didn't happen...WOW. MANIPULATIVE.

this and the actual car crash where christine (newton) was damn near close to blowing up in the explosion (BTW, they never DID explain how she crashed either, did they?)...

that whole scene was so manipulative because you KNEW they were going to redeem dillon's character and have christine be forced to deal with him again...and how they dragged it all out (his cutting her seat belt, his struggling to pull her out of the car, cops pulling him away, and him *JUST* getting her at the nick of time right when the car explodes (mind you, she would have been dead from the heat of car and the fire raging on top of her, but logic was NEVER a necessity in this movie, hunh?)....

UGH...Paul Haggis needs a BOOT TO THE FACE for this...YUCK

the showtime show was just as bad, but a naked ass Ashur from Spartacus in full view in the CRASH PILOT and some of the characters (Nick Tarabay) made up for it...sorta.

I'm laughing all over the place trying to remember the Dillon character's backstory. When his dad is trying to pee but can't....really makes you see the other side of the sexual predator racist cop.

Can't believe they actually filmed his dad on the toilet with an anguished grimmace on his face while Dillon stares off in the distance. hohoho. "Cmon Dad....just a drop. You can do it."

Need to see again to be sure.

I still remember the night I sat on the couch all excited to watch the critically acclaimed Crash film, and all I got was a bunch of racial guilt. That I didn't even feel guilty for, I just knew I was supposed to.

Mainly, the whole time I was thinking "why the fuck did Ludacris sign up for this?"

This idiot of a boyfriend I was involved with at the time it came out SWORE I would love it, even though I voiced some doubts. He was like, you HAVE TO see it. And then I really disliked it pretty intensely and I didn't pretend otherwise and he was very very upset and hurt.

So for a long time I kind of used that as the barometer for whether or not I should date someone. Did you like the movie Forrest Gump? Oh rly? Yeah, I don't think we have much in common...

and I really hate the Noble Savage concept. I think it's condescending and dangerous. The idea that, because someone is goofy, he has access to greater truth is really troubling. It's become worse in recent years (see, e.g., Sara Palin), but any kind of anti-intellectualism bothers me a lot.

Example: In the 80s, I had some friends convicted of securities fraud in a series of associated cases, which convictions were later overturned on appeal, in which the prosecutor literally said, in his closing argument, "You don't need a fancy tax lawyer {like the one who was a defense witness} to tell you whether something is right or wrong. Look at the amount of money these guys made. That just feels wrong. And if it feels wrong, it is wrong." In fact, the whole case turned on whether certain trades had economic substance (i.e., whether they were an appropriate tax strategy) or whether they were shams. Appealing to a sense of self-righteousness and envy and telling people to turn off their brains in order to reach the right result is the worst kind of pandering, and it raises my hackles no matter the context.

Pretty much anyone that thinks movie tastes are some kind of barometer for character or something. Honestly, I don't even think they're any kind of barometer for intelligence either. Usually it just says something about what people prefer to experience from their entertainment.

Although I have my weaknesses. I do find myself annoyed by people that won't give any old black and white movies the time of day. It bugs me people just assume they're boring, when in reality the good ones are usually way shorter, snappier and more audience friendly than current blockbusters. And one time when I explained to my cousin why I liked movies DVDS that were letterboxed, he thought I was an idiot for accepting a smaller picture so I could see someone's ear or something. And I thought he was dumb.

you do enough crossover between tastes within your circle of friends / acquaintances, and there's always going to be huge differences. doesn't really make them smarter or dumber.

a film junkie might judge self-worth based on a DVD collection. a food snob thinks the film guy is an idiot because Applebee's is his favorite restaurant. music man thinks they're both narrow-minded because they only listen to rap. and so on.

where people ride for (modern) Black and White movies JUST BECAUSE. Like they're automatically "smarter" films because they're in B&W.

"Coffee and Cigarette"s was one of the most boring movies I've ever seen. ( except for the WuTang Bill Murray scene). a COMPLETE waste of time. And everybody lines up to fellate Jim Jarmusch because of the Black and White.

( "Down by Law" was the same shit...)

it wasn't the worst overall.

And if you really look at the history of cinema, either the 80's or the 70's (after unearthing the massive numbers of terrible and forgotten disco and blaxploitation pictures) was indeed the worst decade for cinema as a whole.

I'm not gonna really call any decade the worst ever, because just like 80's music, which wears the "Worst decade for music" mantle, for all the crap that came out of the 80's a lot of really amazing shit made up for it.

anyway, I'm just sayin'. Dude said there's nothing redeemable about the 80's:

he said:

Basically just a bunch of '70s layovers (Scorcese, Spielberg) and that's it.
Nothing worthy of the word "great."
Little worthy of the word "good."

Really? ""Platoon" isn't Great? It's probably one of (if not THE) best War Movies of all time. And "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Raiders of The Lost Ark" aren't Great?

I know that PTP is the home of the Highbrow, but to say THAT is just being ridiculous.

Most if not all "art film" and indie movie posts brick. BTW, I think 80s American film is great. Throw in foreign movies, and the 80s is definitely not weak in the context of film history.

So it's not really fair to say that there's nothing redeemable about a whole decade of films, when you ( by your own admission) discount a whole slew of films, based on genre. Not to be a dick, but those were YOUR words.

You probably should've just said something like: "There's not a lot of 80's films that I really like..." That would be a 'safer' statement, and we couldn't really argue against it.

( and for the record, "Platoon" won Best Picture, which puts it up there among the "Good" films. If not the "Great" ones, could you agree with that?)

In response to Reply # 44

It failed, but it was a noble failure. Stallone tried to take it in a different direction. The first two were dramas. The next two were action movies. The 5th one tried to explore the question of how a superstar athlete copes when he's out of the spotlight. He lose all the money, had trouble relating to his family, tried to live vicariously through another athlete, dealt with seriously health issues. That's some real shit right there. Look at what boxers and NFL guys go through regularly now. He tried to tell a story about Rocky outside of the ring. It didn't work as well as it could have. I give him credit for doing something bold in a sequel. It would have just felt cheap and pandering to have Rocky still in the ring at age 45...Oh wait, that's what he did 15 years later at age 60 in that 100 minute pandering shitbag of a movie?

All the bullshit in that movie...Like all of the sudden Rocky went from having 57 wins, 29 by KO (even though I've always asserted that the Drago fight was an unsanctioned exhibition bout and shouldn't have counted towards his professional record thereby making it 56 (28)) to having 57 wins with 54 by KO. Did they think no one would notice? Why did they feel the need to take it up a level? The man ate lightning and crapped thunder. There 's no need to lie about his accomplishments to build him up to be more than he already was.

Also, what the fuck happened to Rocky's irreversible severe brain trauma? What happened to "You can't get licensed in any state"? Did we just retcon that out like Chuck Cunningham and Judy Winslow? I mean he definitely lost the mansion and the talking robot who had a crush on Paulie, so I am operating under the assumption that the bankruptcy from V happened. This movie seems to take place in some bizarre semi-continuation that's never sufficiently explained.

They started the Mason Dixon story line with his quest for respect. Taking him back to his roots. It feels like we're supposed to empathize with him. But then they turn around and play him off as a dick after the fight's set. Then at the end of round 10 Dixon and Rocky embrace and Rocky tells him he's a great champ. Was that the "baptism by fire" that was foretold? A guy who qualifies for the senior special? Are we supposed to feel good about Dixon going the distance with a 60 year old man who's been out of boxing for 15+ years. Dixon wasn't embarrassed by this? It'd be the rough equivalent of Floyd Mayweather fighting Julio Cesar Chavez.

Jim Lampley, Larry Merchant and Max Kellerman -- For three guys who live in front of a camera, they were about as wooden as possible with thei r lines. There were times where it really felt like I was listening to the audio track from Sports Talk Football.

When Rocky's glove touched the canvas in the second round, that was a knock down. Cortez would have issued a standing eight count for that one. Furthermore, that fight, without a doubt, would have been stopped in today's hyper sensitive boxing culture. You put a 60 year old man in the ring and put him down three times in 45 seconds and that's getting waved off without hesitation. This isn't the good ol' 70s where we let guys like Jerry Quarry get pounded into a vegetative state.

What was up with the relationship with Marie? At times it was friendly, at times it was almost familial, at times it was bordering on creepy romantic (that whole exchange where he was in the street with the dog really sounded like he was desperate for a date). And then we see her sitting ringside and she gets the cut-aways at the emotional moments? Like she's a fill-in for Adrian or something? There was way too much Marie and their scenes were too undefined and awkward for me.

Not to mention that the whole thing was really just a spin off of a cut scene from Rocky V. I think that as much as anything shows that Stallone didn't really have anything in the tank. He took a two minute cut scene from a movie he made 15 years ago that got panned and turned it into 20 minutes in Rocky Balboa.

And her son? It seemed like they were setting Rocky up for some kind of mentor role. He gives the kid a job. The kid looks at his old trophies and photos. They pick out a dog together. And then he's completely relegated to the background for the last hour of the movie. What was the point of that? If they cut every scene with that kid out, they would lose nothing.

The dog? Not necessary. Another weak sentimental tie-in that added nothing and went no where. Rocky picks out and old and ugly dog. Oh, I get it. He had a dog in the first movie. Now he has a dog in this movie. We get no further interaction with that dog aside from running up the steps with it. Butkus was about 10x cooler than Punchy could ever be.

What was up with the internal Rocky voiceover in the last round? I think they were trying to play off that "no need to prove anything to anyone but yourself". But it's inconsistent with the entire Rocky franchise. Rocky is a journeyman fighter. He's a total loner. Then he gets a shot, but it's only after he connects with Adrian that he can rise above what he was. Rocky II, he's got nothing until Adrian comes out of the coma. Rocky III, he's lifeless until Apollo throws his support behind him. Rocky IV, with Duke acting as the lifebridge to Apollo's spirit and Adrian showing up at the end. Rocky V, "Get up you son of a bitch, 'cause Mickey loves ya". Rocky is elevated by the support of the people that love him to heights beyond what he would otherwise be capable of. He's feeds off others. And in his darkest moment in 15ish years, he hears his own voice? Bullshit.

Also, why did the fight scene look like those Gatorade commercials with the black & white where they sweat in flavor colors?

I barely felt a thing that entire movie. I felt no tension, no drama, no triumph. Sterile. It felt like watching surgery on one of those late night cable channels. The scene where he's yelling at his son in the street might have been the only part where I felt myself getting into it. Most of the time it was just heavy handed references from the original Rocky and some cute loveable dopey shit from Stallone.

I respect your dedication to the Rocky films, but
I enjoyed all of the little tributes in Rocky VI.

The actual fight aspects were silly, but everything
outside of the fight was well done and touching to
me

I'll be back at this one later though

you're supposed to look at Rocky Balboa as if Rocky V never existed, so that takes care of a few of the problems you had with it.(not gonna go back thru your post and insert which ones, but you'll know which ones)

One of my problems with it is that continuity is huge in the Rocky movies. So much so that the beginning of each Rocky sequel is the ending of the one that came before it. II, III, IV, V all open with the climatic fight from the previous movie. The 6th movie didn't do that, though it would have been difficult to have woven that in. But it undermines it in my eyes. If you want to retcon it that's fine, but I'm taking points off for that.

Additionally, there was still no explanation. Rocky was filthy rich at the end of IV. He had a mansion, hired help, a talking robot, a pool, and expensive ass cars. In Rocky Balboa he's living modestly. Rocky V addressed it with the bankruptcy. But as a viewer, I feel like you owe me some kind of explanation about how the guy went from sleeping on money stacks to living around the way. There are a lot of ways money can disappear and it happens to tons of fighters (Evander) but then there are guys who invest it wisely (Holmes) and guys who can still make money after they leave the ring (Foreman, SRL). It needs to be addressed.

He was by no means poor in Balboa. He was wealthy but was
getting old and preferred to live in his old neighborhood
in Philly. His money was probably tied up in investments and
stuff. A lot of older athletes live like that. Everyone not
trying to live in Florida mansions.

He opened the restaurant because he wanted to own an restaurant.

That bullshit flim flam "Pauly fucked with all of our
money" shit from Rocky V was LOL

And how you can not love the tributes in Rocky Balbloa?

Spider Rico being an old christian puerto rican man who
chills in his restaurant?

Yes and that would have been two lines of dialogue. Somebody in the restaurant asks him why he isn't rich anymore and he tells them some dopey shit about how after his wife died and his kid moved out the things didn't mean as much to him anymore so he wanted to live like a regular guy. Easy. But they didn't do that. I just want that to be covered. If Michael Corelone was living in a 3 bedroom house in the New Jersey suburbs at the start of Godfather III that shit would need to be addressed. How did the character get from where we last saw him to where he is now?

It's minor thing but all of the minor things in the movie added up to distract from whatever the fuck it was they were trying to do.

>That bullshit flim flam "Pauly fucked with all of our
>money" shit from Rocky V was LOL

Agreed, but I see what he was trying to do there. In an era when guys like Tyson and Holyfield go from crazy rich to broke I appreciate him trying to insert that reality into the film. Stallone was always very conscious of what was going on in the boxing world in the movies (original inspiration from Chuck Wepner/Muhammad Ali, Frazier and Duran cameos in the first two, Thunderlips/Rocky mirroring Andre The Giant/Wepner, casting Tommy Morrison and Antonio Tarver as the opponents in the last two, etc...) and he tried to reflect that reality. He tried to get at the core of what it is that makes all of these greats want to keep coming back (also a theme in III and IV). I'm a big V apologist. By IV it was almost entirely removed from the feel of the first one. It was basically a straight action movie starring Dolph and his girlfriend at the time with multiple pop music sequences and over the top action. Stallone tried to take it back closer to its roots. He failed, but I've always seen V as a noble failure.

To me it felt like in the last one instead of working forward from the character he worked backward from the fight at the end. Just ran counter to all of the Rocky movies in my mind.

>And how you can not love the tributes in Rocky Balbloa?
>
>Spider Rico being an old christian puerto rican man who

The number one reason is that it felt like pandering to me. Like there wasn't really much in the way of consistency in tone throughout the movie so they just jammed it full of nostalgia. The Spider Rico thing was a nice little homage, but then they took a little extra with Rocky talking about him as an opponent. Like, "Just in case you didn't pay attention to the first scene of the original, we're going to hit you over the head with it right now."

If it were just Spider Rico, alright. But it was Spider Rico + Marie + getting a dog + all the other shit that just felt like they were trying too hard. I love the Rocky movies and care about them more most any rational individual should. They have my love. I think it's beneath the franchise to pander to the audience. Plus I feel like they shortchanged the training sequence, which was very disappointing to me.

That being said, if they make another sequel in which Rocky under goes cyborg surgery and fights a zombie Apollo Creed I'll be there on opening night.

Interestingly enough, he basically did the exact opposite with the new Rambo movie.

There's some contextual shit

Like, Adrienne died. They didn't GO INTO THAT either

That explains everything -- his wife died, he gave up
on living lavishly, was sorta depressed, just living
humbly around people he knows loves him

I mean, damn...how do you even put that in dialogue?

THAT woulda been corny

Rocky ain't like none of them two dumbass niggas though

He's more like Larry Holmes, who is a super duper family

I gotta watch V again, but I thought it was some bullshit
and was wildly unrealistic

Balboa, on the other, seemed like real life to me:

Life IS FILLED with nostalgia.

Life IS FILLED with subtle moments.

My college roommate's little sister is about to go college

I almost passed the fuck out when I hear that

I mean, I had one of them moments

Shit like that is real

Could not possibly disagree more

WTF?? Nigga, that's how life REALLY IS, though

Life actually has moments like that

It ain't "pandering."

Life is full of actual experiences like that

That is how LIFE is

You know Puerto Ricans??

Part of it is context I think. If Rocky Balboa would have dropped in 1990 it would have been viewed as schlock. But it dropped in 2006 and people were just happy to see Rocky back on the big screen. There was a training sequence, there was a fight at the end, Rocky got his ass kicked and kept coming. People weren't going to quibble with the rest. They didn't care enough. They just wanted to be entertained. At the end of the day, in a vacuum, Rocky Balboa was probably more entertaining than Rocky V. But in the context of the franchise, I will hold to my original statement.

>I mean, goddamn nigga everything ain't gotta be spelled
>out

Right, but given the fact it's been 15 year since we've seen him on the screen and they decided the act like V never happened they do need to spell out some things. I was confused throughout a lot of the movie. Maybe my mistake was knowing and caring too much. If you were just casually into Rocky you weren't going to give a shit about what happened in between and any explanation wouldn't have meant anything. But I'm sitting in the theater trying to figure out how the belt got from Tommy Gunn to Mason Dixon and about how many champions would have come between.

>There's some contextual shit

>Like, Adrienne died. They didn't GO INTO THAT either

They addressed it though. They showed Rocky at the grave and gave it a line or two. If they had just shot the movie like Adrian never existed that shit would have been too much. This is somewhere in between. It worked fine for you, it didn't for me.

>I gotta watch V again, but I thought it was some bullshit
>and was wildly unrealistic

I think it had a realistic framework and just took everything too far. George Washington Duke as Don King-lite was a swing and a miss. Tommy Morrison turned too quickly on Rocky. The soundtrack was brutal and they tried to give it a street edge that just did not work. Plenty of shit wrong with Rocky V.

>Life IS FILLED with nostalgia.

>Life IS FILLED with subtle moments.

Yes and there wasn't a damn thing subtle in that movie. Life doesn't hit you over the head with shit. Some people will see it, some people won't. Life doesn't care. It just does its thing and keeps going. If you miss it, it's on you.

>WTF?? Nigga, that's how life REALLY IS, though
>
>Life actually has moments like that
>
>It ain't "pandering."
>
>Life is full of actual experiences like that

It is. But Rocky Balboa was on some let's just retrace shit. Life doesn't do that.

I've yet to find anyone that agreed with most of my take on those two movies, but that's how I see it.

admittedly, I'm a TOTAL Star Wars nut, so obviously I'm biased. But whenever any of those LOTR dudes lets that fall out of his mouth, I go from Zero to Apeshit in 2.5 seconds.

A cat I used to work with actually said THIS ( between The Two Towers and ROTK):

"they're saying that once the next one comes out, it's gonna be the greatest trilogy of all time..."

I mean, WHO said that? How can you say some shit like that even BEFORE a movie is even MADE? He was just pushing my buttons, I'm sure, But even in the Star Wars Heyday, nobody said that before Jedi came out. You can't crown something The Greatest before it's even finished, can you?

but yeah. I won't hear of it.

I think it's mostly fans of one franchise just fucking with fans of the other, like in that silly ass world where you can't like Star Wars ANS Star Trek. on some Bloods and Crips shit.

but yeah. There's people who think that if you like LOTR you're not allowed to like Star Wars. So they use all the box office receipts and the Oscar for ROTK as ammunition in the argument.

Not copping pleas, but I'm pretty sure it's hard to write a story backwards...especially if you lied and said you wrote it years ago
*looks directly at George Lucas*

BUT, I think Ep III makes up for the shitty parts of Phantom Menace and Attack of The Clones. Maybe not, lol. But Ep II was my third favorite of the six. After "A New Hope" and "Empire"

I'd argue that Ep III had the best lightsaber battle, and it also won since it was so much darker than the other 5.

But I and II, outside of a couple REALLY great nerd moments (the pod race scene and Darth Maul popping the other end of the lightsaber from I and Yoda sabering up in II), the movies are pretty weak IMHO.

13 hours for LoTR does hurt quite a bit though, tough to watch in one sitting now.

the star wars OT is fantastic of course, but at this point of my life, i can't tell how much of it is nostalgia for me. all i know is, i went into a movie theater in 2001 with absolutely no knowledge of what LOTR was, and ten years later, i'm head over heels in love with that trilogy. like, i watched 12 or 13 hours of the extended cuts, then went back and watched them again with the writer/director commentary on. if somebody came up to me and said LOTR is a better trilogy, i wouldn't argue at all.

I guarantee anyone who thinks about those movies doesn't think about Frodo and his happy hobbit friends kicking it in the shire.

Hell I can think of two scenes that are actually worth watching in the first one. When Gandolf bites it and the battle with the orcs at the end.

They're like the fight with Darth Maul in the Phantom Menace. Yeah it was cool...but that doesn't excuse the rest of that boring and or shitty ass movie.

ultimately, I didn't like the movie that much.

but I HATE it when people take movies with crazy ass plots and odd writing and put them in this category where they're good just because they don't make sense.

and my favorite line: "well....it doesn't HAVE to make sense. It's what you make of it"

foh.

Oh, and uh, most David Lynch movies fall under this category. You basically sit there annoyed for 2 hours, and when it ends, you look at your watch and realize that you could've been watching ESPN Classic or some shit.

Explain to me who these Special People are, and what makes them so unique that them and David Lynch have a telepathic bond...

and for the record, the whole "makes movies for certain people" argument is rendered kinda null and void once those films are released to a MASS FUCKIN' AUDIENCE. I could see if he screened those shits in the privacy of his own home, but once a studio puts it out, it seems that the shit was made for any schmuck with 15 dollars in hand.

I really do have better manners than that, but I tend to get mischievous on occasion. Surreal, not exactly, but the paranoia of Mulholland Drive and Lost Highway make me proud to be an American. It's like we can finally say to European cinema, no he's not Haneke, but we do have someone artistic, uncompromising and not literally minded. Dune was imperfect but far ahead of his time. Aronofsky gives me hope also, being as talented, maybe more, and slightly less cynical.

I told him we weren't having the discussion anymore 'cuz he was clearly on some bullshit.....again.

I've heard, well you have to have traveled in order to understand what it's like to be alone in a foreign country.

Ummm yes i have.

It's boring, not as charming and insightful as people make it out to be. It's a lonely dude who meets a girl then they leave. big fucking deal. OH

Anyone who likes this movie likes it just to like it cuz it a lil different. It's just boring.

two of my best friends from childhood arguing over who played a better drunk in a movie: Nic Cage in Leaving Las Vegas or the dude who played Bob (Richie's alcoholic aspiring cartoonist stepbrother) in La Bamba.

This argument got so heated (and somewhat ironically was between two highly intoxicated individuals) it almost came to blows before we interceeded at the last moment.

Ten years later, I can still distinctly recall the details of that debate & crack up.

>& There Will Be Blood.

And Nick Cave's score should've been nominated as well

I own both and have watched both no less than 5 times.....I just like TWBB more. Daniel Day-Lewis and Paul Dano carried that shit.

I've heard all of arguments for NCFOM including Ebert's review where he calls it 'a perfect film' and I still say that TWBB is better. Is it kinda melodramatic at times? Yeah. But TWBB has a much better payoff IMO.

Had the argument a few times when they were both out and during award season. I've kind of moved on though.

I go wild. That shit is generally my favourite part of going to a theatre! I LOVE the trailers. Fuck you if you* wanna miss the trailers to finish your spliff.
