LOL. I didn't have too much of a problem with the "zombies". Foolishly, I was expecting a much more clever movie. It was so by-the-numbers that every beat was too easy to predict. Some weird pacing as well. There were some cool action sequences though.

very well paced -- never moving too fast or slow. Smith (while not perfect) did a good job considering he was basically doing a monologue for 3/4 the film.

the scenery was *excellent*. how he survived from day to day was also well done.

the monsters were pretty cheesy-looking, but the suspense is built well and overall the CGI was not distracting.

would recommend/see again.

akiva goldsman strikes again

this should be taught in film school as an example of just terrible screenwriting.

i can't remember being this bored at a movie much less an tent-pole picture in a long time.

just fucking tedious

and for the scope of its production/budget that shit doesn't even make it up on screen (see: the south street seaport section)

oh and CGI monsters was probably the worst decision they could have made. way bleed any sense of menace or terror out of the movie.

i'm not even going to waste my time with more on this. utterly forgettable.

the best thing about this movie was the dark knight trailer

Could have done without the CGI dark stalker infected ppls. Real people would have been... more.

The emotions conveyed of loneliness and personal loss were well done imo.

The horror/monster flick cliche's and redundancies could have been washed out. I'm not sure how one can equate "rabid humans" with "super strength having ninja wallcrawler acrobats more than willing to be human projectiles to get a job done". Even if I haven't read the book the connection was lost on me. They could have done something different than the ole "Be scared cuz they move fast and bite" tactic.

The ambience set forth in the first half of the movie was perfection tho. I think Will did a decent job of conveying the character. The emotion-heavy moments were great but then in all the other moments it just felt like watching Will Smith in another blockbuster movie. I feel like his character could have been more immersive than it was.

I would reccomend this movie to others tho. Good watch. Not great but good enuff to go see for this cold winter season.

Thank you for saying so, I knew I wasn't the only one jumping every five damn minutes. The shit wasn't advertised like it was going to be scary but damn, I was hiding behind my coat for a good prtion of the movie.

Somebody tell what the significance of the scene where Robert(Will) gets caught in a booby trap and is hanging upside down...was he set up or did he just run into one of his old traps that he just forgot to dismantle?

Man when Sam went crazy, I damn near died, she was all he had!

The non explaination of relevance of that is the one thing about the movie that bothered me. It was clear that at least one was beginning to show some semblance of higher level thinking, as well as organizing. The intelligent scientists makes a small note that one exposed itself to sunlight on purpose and then it was dropped. With the exception of that aspect I enjoyed the film alot.

it was a set-up in the same way Wills' character set-up the "zombies" with the blood vile. They moved the mannequin from the normal spot at the video store and set the trap in front of it, the same way as Dr Neville had. Had he hung there until dark, they'd have had him. Instead, he was able to cut himself down and get to his truck. Worst case, the blood would lead to a trail of where he'd be ...

My guess is that the "zombie" that exposed himself to light got a look at Dr. Neville and planned the trap.

great visuals, except the shitty looking zombies.

will was good, but not great.

slow parts were excruciating.

unbelievability level a little too high, except for maybe the gas prices. I thought Omega Man was more convincing.

where the fuck did Braga come from rescuing Will like that? floodlights after dark. cruising around with a young boy when they knew to dark seekers were out? totally ridiculous.

lame, predictable ending.

i was highly entertained. will smith was great, the creatures were done pretty well, would recommend.

also it left me with a lot of questions about how much should we trust science and medical research to cure disease and what if the cure really is worse than the disease?

Was "Fuck looking for a cure for cancer". At least I think.

I liked the movie. It was no masterpiece, there are some plot holes, but it kept me tense and it was entertaining. Worth a viewing.

Yes the CGI zombies (and even the CGI Lions!) were weak. And WHY THE HELL DIDN'T HE JUST KEEP HIS DOG ON A LEASH??

But the first half of the film, where Will copes with being alone in Manhattan wasteland, was well done and engaging.. until the other humans show up and make a fairly smart movie turn dumb.

IMO the downfall of the film was when they suddenly injected* the religious theme, leading to contrived plot twists and hokey happy ending to back up the God Is Present angle.

*no pun intended

I was expecting more of a plot driven/action flick but it seemed more of a character story. Will Smith is truly an excellent actor though. I only wish there could have been more characters he could have interacted with, lol.

he's great especially being able to work through as many emotions is tough..i commend him for his job.
however, i felt the film did sorta lag after he was rescued...he even let down his guard a little too much...
countless numbers of zombies coming to his home was weird but ok...a few predictable moments they could've kept.

honestly if i'd directed this film- i would've played up on the zombies using more human instincts to hunt..ex when they rigged up the taxi and caught his ass up...or when he noticed one of the zombies/dummies was alive outside....even tho u can argue and say his mind was playing tricks, i think something more would've worked.

i still recommend it to folk to see tho.....

I dont mean an exact cop but you gots:

Will as the one who knows it all
Will doing a body scene
will being attacked by robots/zombies
zombies/robots learning human behavior etc
Will/Robot being special

and yes I know there are other elments of philosophy and drama. I liked Legend and thought Will did the thing. I should have said "similar elements of I Robot" but I didn't ..so sue me. My statement wasn't damning the movie.

i kind of got that 'children of men' type of similarities in a sense. but 'c.o.m' is a far more superior film/script/directing/cinematography etc.

but yea, i didn't read the book but imagined the ending wasn't as picture perfect/closure as the movie was.

Main protagonist sacrifices his life to help a "hope" survive

- Will Smith fends off mutants; girl escapes with cure
- Clive Owen fends off troops; girl escapes with baby

both had Hollywood endings.

both movies end with similar plot devices but closure, to me, means a conclusion that fulfills and stays true to the tone/ideas/themes that led up to it. I Am Legend fails on this count, because it takes a sharp left turn (towards the dumb and outlandish) when Alice Braga shows up with all her religious baggage

but in the terms of Hollywood, the closure of "main character sacrifices himself, happier life awaits for all" is the same for both CoM and Legend.

neither story drifts off into a dark or unfulfilled ending.

but the degrees for seperation are like 10-

like i still feel like children of men coped out in the end

and i am legend
was definitely a cope out from when miss brazil entered the picture

at least they tried in children of men

i did feel like they just said eff it in IAL

that said will did his thing and he was not the director
i wonder when he will get to the place where
star power will mean less and quality of work will mean more
the johnny depp level

and some vica versa
johnny should get in shape and show some abs for the ladies
while he still got it

I applaud any time a black actor
can take a role as a hero with out
resorting to the shucking and jiving caricature.

He got to be a hero that was intelligent, resourceful and self sacrificing.

Being that they departed so far from the original
the title had to be shoe horned into a Bob Marley type reference
which is cool with me, gotta love Bob.

But it would have been so much creepier if it was in relation to the creatures calling out to him...

The movie missed out in excluding that element to the Neville/infected interaction.
There should have been a steady build up of the infected actively terrorizing Neville by calling out to him and coming upon his house but the moment they found his spot everything blows up (figuratively and literally). Overall though I liked the movie.

for all the PTP heads that hate will smith and movies that are designed to make over 100 mil, but go run out to see them anyway only to dog em out on the internet...pat yourselves on the back

http://www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com/will-smith-can-now-say-i-am-legend-30m-friday-debut-70m-weekend/
SUNDAY AM:

Some amazing numbers were posted for this weekend's No. 1 and No. 2 movie releases. Village Roadshow/Warner Bros' I Am Legend opened $77.4 million -- almost double the studio's hoped-for $50 million -- after making a whopping $30.2 million Friday and $29 million Saturday (-4%) in 3,606 theaters for first place. This more than demonstrates that Will Smith is now the biggest U.S. box office stud bar none and breaks his previous opening record (I Robot's $62 mil in summer).

This was easily the biggest December movie opening ever. Not only did I Am Legend soar past the numbers for King Kong's and Narnia's December debuts, but it passed all three of the Lord Of the Rings trilogy's Christmas-timed openings as well, including Return Of The King's record-setting $72.6 mil.) The humongous hit is a badly needed life preserver for Warner Bros' drowning movie division, which I'm told didn't even have time to do a research screening on the film since it came in so late.

Smith is one of the few, if not only, Hollywood stars right now who tracks extremely well with both African-American and Hispanic audiences as well as whites. That accounts for why I Am Legend's numbers went through the roof even though its "last man on earth who's not alone" subject matter is a downer. (This is the 3rd adaptation -- Vincent Price starred in The Last Man On Earth and Charlton Heston in The Omega Man -- based on the post-apocalyptic novel by Richard Matheson.) "But put Will Smith into it, and it really changes the equation," a Warner Bros source told me. "It's definitely tracking four quadrant." I'm told the movie played broadly -- almost equally male/female, under age 25/over 25, ethnic/non-ethnic -- and playability was strong with all audiences being at or above the norms with males slightly stronger than females.

That was evident even going into Friday, I was told, when the PG-13 thriller had definite interest among young males (74%), older males (67%), young females (56%) and older females (49%). The only question now is whether the East Coast storms will affect Saturday and Sunday turnout there, prompting one Warner exec to rue not having a degree in meteorology. The film cost $150+ mil and was 50/50 co-financed and produced by Village Roadshow.

And let's be clear here

I'm a Will Smith fan

But unlike you, I don't come to the boards and make outlandish statements about the dude, then get mad when people don't "get" what I'm saying, then switch the statements up/omit details of my "argument" when pressed

Keep waving that "Will Smith is the Most Ver$atille Boxx Office $tar of All Time$ and Y'all Maddd!" flag though

Y'all dudes really need to quit bringing that "celebrate box office stardom or be labeled a hater" shit to these boards

i've made what, 3 posts in PTP since i've been a member? i rarely venture over here so i dunno what people think in terms of box office stars and blockbusters...but after that thread i made, it was made VERY clear

but it's obvious u are salty, and people kill me (offline as well) that go watch movies that are designed to rake in big $$$ and then shit on them AND the stars...

and yes, this article here basically says the same thing i said in that thread I made minus the "of all time" part, but when it's all said and done, trust me, that is how will smith will be remembered...u mad? oh my bad..you STILL mad?

Ion't really care how many posts you've made here

The bottom line is, you came up with a faulty premise in your last post, then got pissy when people shot it down

Repeatedly

Then tried to hide behind the "You Dudse is Mad Cause wIll Smiff makin Money" stance when the shit was exposed

Because, according to your "logic," if we don't agree with your shaky ass assertion that Will Smith is the most "versatile*" actor ever of all time in Hollywood, then we're just "mad" and don't "get it"

If I'm mad at anything, it's your stubborn refusal to take the L like a civilized adult

But hey, it's your shovel, keep digging a deeper hole for yourself

We honestly don't care

No, we really don't

no seriously, go back to that thread (which is probably on page 4 or 5 now) and point me to where i made ANY reference to how much money will smith has...u do that and I will NEVER. NOT ONCE EVER. log back onto okayplayer.com...I won't even LURK.

so go. any reference to will smiths bank account and how much money he has...i will be here.

i said then, i say now, and will continue to say that will smith IS the biggest movie star of all time, NO. OTHER. ACTOR. rakes in more $$$$ across more genres of film in the history of hollywood, you can even adjust for inflation...period. and i made that clear in that thread too...will smith is no gene hackman, johnny depp, or sean penn in terms of acting talent. but...well, the article already said it.

I find it hilarious that a good chunk of the free world and most movie critics, as well as the top film producers/directors/studios agree with my assertion, but a few emo movie nerds on a hip hop message board don't...hmmmmm, yes. allow me to bury my head in the sand.

I think what he is getting at is when you said Will was the most versatile, that you meant a "good thespian/actor," not all around movie star who can be placed in any role that the audience will accept and go see. Like comparing him to Denzels acting chops vs. his star power.

The whole "versatile" discussion threw it off.

As for adjusting for inflation, Tom Cruise is still the man with 8 films in the top 200 all-time and varying genres (comedy, action, and drama). Will Smith only has two (Men in Black and Independence Day).

In terms of most bankable right now, Will would have it. He's averaging 120 million a movie. Cruise has gone off the rails a bit and who knows if he can get it back.

*SPOILER ALERT*

- So god told that lady to drive to Vermont and she knew exactly where to go and that there would be a refugee camp there? ... like seriously, thats their explanation for that? wow.

- The cure for cancer ended up mutating people into zombies. And there was no further explanation? WTF? Since they are showing flashbacks, how about making them informative as to what actually happened so its somewhat more believable. Measles doesnt turn people into zombies. It woulda been really cool to see people being transformed and a montage of how the world became a ghost town.

- The zombies had lost all human behavior and were savage beasts... yet they were able to set up an elaborate trap for will smith to fall into?

The movie was fun and it kept me on the edge of my seat, though it really wasnt that scary at all. The only scary/suspenseful scene was in the warehouse when he went chasing after the dog. that was creepy how they were all huddled around in the dark.

Oh and the ending sucked. Really sucked.

but it was still entertaining and i felt i got my moneys worth, just cant say it was a great movie.

Will Smith is one hell of an actor though. I know we all laughed at the most versatile actor post, but he really can do it all, and can do it all very very well.

the vampires were obviously alot more intelligent than Will thought. The same vampire that exposed himself also set the trap and led 2 attacks on Will.

They were building to an end consistent with the book... but then they wrapped shit up nicely, as if they were responding to early screeners complaining about the ending being to ambigouos.

it's not that hard to figure out from a plot-point perspective. they fucked around with an virus, in hopes it would become a miracle cure, and it mutated into something disastrous.

that's another 10-20 minutes of something very elementary and not terribly pertinent to Smith's story.

seriously?

Seeing NYC in a post-apocalyptic state was the best part of this movie. And it woulda been a hell of a lot more interesting actually showing visually how it got that way and how everyone transformed. Thats way more entetaining then will Smith talking to Fred or Hank.

Outbreak or something.

the only thing that needed to be transferred into Smith's story was that most of population was wiped out by said virus.

Smith's story through the first 2/3 of the movie was about dealing with the loneliness and despair of being the last man alive. Reflected in him talking to mannequins and his relationship with his dog.

an additional five cut-scenes of the viral glasses breaking and different families being mutated three years ago is insignificant to that point.

it's clear that it was not his idea to create the strain of measles.

the backdrop of him being a virologist is important because it establishes him as someone smart enough to create a cure.

his remorse seem more wrapped up in the fact he is the only survivor of his family.

him being the last survivor is because he couldnt prevent what happened.

but regardless, i think its dumb that if they are going to show flashbacks, you might as well show the most important thing which is the extinction of the world's population. thats what people want to see.

regardless, that was just one gripe of many with the film. i still enjoyed it and it was fun, but there were too many holes that held it back.

not *why* it did.

Smith's story wasn't about how and why the virus mutated, went airborne, etc.

the only plot necessity was that the virus did what it did.

I think how and why the virus spread were very important aspects of the storyline. But more than that its the effect showing those scenes would have had. It didnt even require going into great detail. An extra flashback or two would have been perfect. Just like we saw the flashbacks of how Smiths family died. Would it have been the same if Smith just said his family died verbally without any visuals?

Smith felt so responsible because he left his family to help fight the virus.

he should have died with them that night...and even worse, he couldn't stop the virus anyway.

could have they included more information about the virus? sure. but I don't feel like it detracted any from Smith's story -- which was very personal in itself.

that the "law of unintended consequences" or situations where an action results in an outcome that is not what the person/people intended. using measles to kill cancer had a negative or a perverse effect. that's all i needed...i hate the idea of humans "curing" diseases, anyway. we need to stop playing god.

The trap was a copy of Will's, monkey see monkey do.

If you noticed when Neville was going house to house, Christmas trees & related items were still up, meaning that virtually everyone died that week showed in the flash backs.

---------------------
one thing I hate about the ending is how the lady & son got there out of nowhere & how the fireplace was completely safe from a big explosion like that.

IMO the movie was fantastic before the two showed up, the psychological stuff was all good, he was really messed up.

Like when he is playing golf an says four, or the obvious other ones.

I think the point was that they hadn't lost all human behavior. That one zombie came out into the light in an effort to protect the female. Very human. But Will Smith's character was so in his zone that he didn't see it, that was the point of that video confessional. Plus they set up the trap. Plus they apparently kept dogs as pets. And they were apparently social and able to orchestrate large scale attacks.

Some little shit that pissed me off though:

-If those zombies can rip through that thick ass steel that he had protecting his windows, bust through his lab door and rip through the ceiling, how the fuck does he have a chance with one in hand to hand?

-No way was the wall at the compound in Vermont high enough to keep out those zombies.

esp. when they were scaling walls

some other things I didn't like/understand was how the zombie let the dogs go to attack Neville and Sam yet he(zom) nor the other zombies ran out to attack. Was there still too much light for them?

-how Neville SUDDENLY realized that his(&other survivors) blood was the cure. Wouldn't that had been the first thing tested?

-that somehow the scientist just up and gave 10,009 people a 'cure' w/out testing rats first and to see the virus act in less than a day really begs the question. Actually it would have made more sense if some lab rat had started the infection.

-also there was no understanding to why the bridges were taken out, I'm guessin the gov. did it.

-If the alpha zombie was skillful to peep Nevilles actions with Fred and Wilma, then why he peep where he lived too? and what was Neville pouring on his doorway & steps (amonia?)

god didn't tell the lady about the refugee camp in vermont. will's character knew about it too, he just didn't believe it was actually there and operating. it was part of the evacuation plan.

how could they possibly explain, to your satisfaction, how measles can be a cure for cancer. cuz we'd have to explain that long before we get to the point where it explains how it turns people to zombies. it does. that's really all that matters. what do you want, an explanation down to the molecular level thats STILL fundamentally bullshit because it's fake movie-science? it would be insulting.

the zombies obviously being more intelligent than will's character gave them credit for should have been investigated further, but as it is, its just yet another thing that he was obviously wrong about.

>- So god told that lady to drive to Vermont and she knew

>wow.

thats just a cop out ending is all. some cheap, generic shyamalan nonsense thats supossed to wow everyone.. and just pisses everyone off. this isnt a plot hole, its just a half assed "twist"

>- The cure for cancer ended up mutating people into zombies.
>And there was no further explanation? WTF? Since they are
>showing flashbacks, how about making them informative as to
>what actually happened so its somewhat more believable.
>Measles doesnt turn people into zombies. It woulda been
>really cool to see people being transformed and a montage of
>how the world became a ghost town.

again, not a plot hole really. i know thats petty semantics arguing there, just sayin. this would have added alot to the movie.

>- The zombies had lost all human behavior and were savage
>beasts... yet they were able to set up an elaborate trap for
>will smith to fall into?

yeah this would be considered inconsistant, but not entirely a stretch. they obviously did maintain a level of intelligence, and its not entirely far fetched- they just should have added more depth to them.

>The movie was fun and it kept me on the edge of my seat,
>though it really wasnt that scary at all. The only
>scary/suspenseful scene was in the warehouse when he went
>chasing after the dog. that was creepy how they were all
>huddled around in the dark.
>
>Oh and the ending sucked. Really sucked.

ditto, ditto, dito. a great setup. that was like smashing to jason richardson on the break, clear lane, no one behind him, with the squad down by 1 with the playoffs on the line- its a done deal! you but then he lays that shit up and it rolls out of the rim.

>but it was still entertaining and i felt i got my moneys
>worth, just cant say it was a great movie.

2/3's of a very good flick, but yeah... not enough toreally hold it in high regard.

>Will Smith is one hell of an actor though. I know we all

he said it himself. "They'll never stop..."

Had he just tossed the grenade, and run into the tunnel, they were taking the chance that not only would all the Zombies NOT die, but then they'd chase them down until dawn. And the cure would've NEVER made it to Vermont.

But the way he did it, they either mostly died in the explosion, or they just turned their attention on him, and not Eva and the boy ( who got away with the Cure).

the grenade thrown into the middle of the pile of zombies WHILE they were all paying attention to Will would've probably done the same damage as will HOLDING the grenade and jumping into the pile of zombies. *shrug*

What *I* was questioning about was whether or not the zombies were smart enough to throw the grenade back in that jawn if he tossed it out.

yeah, spoiler.

i really think they should have kept the book's ending. and not just on some fanboy "faithful for faithful's sake" shit, but because the book's ending was halfway interesting. i mean, all in all, i liked the film better than the book (smith was great, the visuals were great, very intense), but the hollywood ending really ruined the whole thing for me.

seemed like such a logical choice too-- hollywood is all about crazy twist endings these days, isn't it? it probably would have added a good 15-20 minutes to the film, but it would have been worth it.

also, it would have been cool to have the one vampire/zombie thing yelling neville's name over and over like in the book. that would have been mad creepy.

Question- did they touch upon what the deal was with the newspaper article with Will on the cover was all about? The one that said 'Saviour'? Did that have anything to do with the virus itself?

Will was good in it and there were a lot more scares in it than I expected but overall it's another forgettable film. There was never a great moment in it or anything that really stood out. IMO nothing was terribly wrong about it but I just kind of sat there and watched. I was never drawn in by the film and it wasn't exactly entertaining.

I really wish Will would make something really memorable but his movies are making a ton of money anyway so why mess with success?

where i'm glad that i didn't read the book before watching the movie. I general try to read the book that a movie is based on if i know it's a novel adaptation, but everyone in here saying it didn't say faithful to the novel, well of course it didn't! if you expected it too you're a sucker or a fool, 99.9% of the time the movie is going to veer from the novel in some important aspect just by virtue of the fact that a novel can go so much more in depth with the plot, characters, etc. that if a movie tried to stay faithful to it all they would all be 6 hours long. Was the ending pollyannish and hollywood? Of course it was, but it's a blockbuster movie and blockbuster movies tend to be that way in regards to tying up everything nicely and having a happy ending.

Actually the title made hella more sense in the book but doesn't do too well in the flick. Shoulda called it 'Ground Zero' sense that's was his reason for staying.

It felt dumbed down to me. I was really hoping for more to chew on. Some things were handled well (loss, psychosis), but the seemingly exponential growth in intelligence of the infected after 3 years of simply hunting and feeding was pretty silly. I was expecting this movie to take some more risk and give me some "Oh shit!" and/or goosebump moments. They played it safe and I was disappointed.

My expectations were probably too high. It wasn't a bad movie, but it didn't "stick" with me.

1) certain aspects you have to assume. Virus was converted to be beneficial. it turned out to be harmful. To almost all life.

2) Many of the comments Will's character was making about the infected was really him projecting about himself.

3) the problem with the end was the cure. First Will's character created a cure that was effective at cold levels. Now this correllates with the story in that the virus can't stand the cold but....why did he send the sample of the woman's blood and not the actual potential cure?

4) Did he set up Fred or did the vampire leader? Because dude set up mannequins all over the place to fake human contact?

the zombie guys exhibit no other signs of being capable of trap-setting.

Will himself says they aren't human anymore. They see him pull out a grenade but stand around, and in the warehouse they just kind of stand around dumbly?

Yet in the pitch black they set an elaborate trap using 'Fred?'

While one of the vampires kind of seemed to be the leader, I didn't think they had the capabilities of setting that trap. In the end, it didn't matter though. They just needed a reason for him to get stuck and for his dog to get bitten.

Also, did Will leave his gun in the shade? Zombie vampire smart guy leaders can't pick it up? but they can tie knots?

There was some sign earlier in the film that said that dogs can go out at dusk. If not, why would the lead guy not just send everyone after Will immediately? When Will was fighting off the dogs, why weren't the rest of the zompires running over to finish him off? The plan was to set an elaborate trap so that then he could unleash three dogs?

I think this was my major issue with the film: it started off as a (while not thought proving) thoughtful character piece and then turned into a film in which you basically had to turn your brain off.

When that one zombie came out after he bagged the female, it was because he was trying to protect her. I thought the point of that Real World confessional he did where he talked about how they were so far from human that they had even lost their survival was to show that his character was so into hating them, he couldn't see it. He couldn't see the very human characteristic of a man trying to protect a woman. They also set up the trap, kept dogs as pets, were social to the point that they slept together and were able to communicate well enough to get the whole zombie crew together for an attack at his place.

Personally, I just don't think it's a film that you want to think about too much. The more questions you ask, the flimsier it seems IMO. (And that's not on Will, it's on Akiva)

They didn't want to be "helped". I think they were probably content with how they were. They just wanted to kill the motherfucker that had been terrorizing them and picking them off for the last three years. That's why he had that "That's right. I got you motherfucker" look. He just wanted to kill Will Smith's character because he had been kidnapping and killing zombies like it was his job for the last three years.

I am probably biased by the original plot of the book though, but that's how I saw it.

And that my problem with the script or the editing (whichever cut out key story/character elements). You have to make huge leaps and basically guess at the motivation of the antagonists in the second half of the film. The only sign that they are even capable of thinking is the trap and even that was open to interpretation. To move from that to then guessing where their motivation is is sloppy writing.

As a turn your brain off action movie, that's fine and personally, I didn't think it affected the film that much but when really looking at it in terms of whether it was a quality film, I think you have to admit that the story-telling was weak.

i had neither seen "omega man" nor read the book when i saw "i am legend"....yet when he showed the WALL OF PEOPLE that he had experimented on & killed, i was like, hmmmmmm....he's killed a whole lot of them!

those specific points:
- the first trap being set (i.e., them NOT killing the dog when he came into their hideout)
- the way dude peeked out when will kidnapped the girl
- the trap that the night seekers set
- the fact that the zombie dude LED AN ATTACK

....they chopped & screwed that damn movie. my boy was like, the director's cut better be maaaad different.

seems like they edited out a whole subplot of the movie.

"- the first trap being set (i.e., them NOT killing the dog when he came into their hideout)"

So now you're saying that the whole reason they didn't kill the dog the first time was part of the trap? That makes no sense at all. The dog had nothing to do with the later trap. It was Will who went over. Unless their plan was to trap Will, then kill the dog, which would then turn Will suicidal.

"- the way dude peeked out when will kidnapped the girl"

That was hardly a peek. He stuck his face out. The audience was then told by Will the reason for that they had lost all sense. But the audience was supposed to realize that Will should give them more credit than that (something which we were given no reason to do to this point in the film) and realize that what Will said was wrong and that they actually were smarter.

"- the fact that the zombie dude LED AN ATTACK"

He seemed like the leader but then again, he basically stormed through the room out of control, tossing people out of the way so you could hardly say that they were exactly organized.

"seems like they edited out a whole subplot of the movie."

This is what I've been saying. The zompires weren't developed at all. First Will say they have lost it, then they apparently set a trap, but then they are just ramming their heads into a wall (which would seem to go back to Will's earlier statement).

I think he is saying when the dog followed the deer into their nest, the didn't kill him (like they murked that deer)because they knew he would follow and wanted to trap him inside the hive. I could see his point if Will didn't venture deep in the hive, even coming within feet of a bunch of them without them even noticing.

watch it again, he was clearly the leader of every attack on will. he organized. they also showed some measure of intellect both times they attacked him: on the bridge(bringing down the lightpoles on top of the suv to disable it and get to will) and his house (disabling the UV stadium lights). Also, in the lab, when the alpha cleared the way, you didn't notice everyone else fell back and was cheering him on? I would say that was organized for zompires, why would he be the only one attacking if it wasn't?

I agree. hopefully, a director's cut(hopefully with an alternate darker ending)showing more zompire dynamics among other things would greatly benefit this film ala Kingdom of Heaven. That being said, I still enjoyed this movie and will go see it again

I thought the dialogue in that part was so heavy-handed that it was supposed to make it clear that Will was missing something.

that was the same mannequin that was outside the video store the day before. if you think he was crazy and did it to himself, *shrug* but it wasn't an "old trap"

but that still seems like a stretch.

how would they have any idea the mannequin would get Will's attention, being as he only was around it during the day?

I don't think it's unfeasible that he had already set up similar traps around the city, in front of their lairs (ie all the infected he had run tests on in his lab).

he *was* going crazy though...moving Fred doesn't make as much sense in that context but having old traps he's forgotten about does.

How did they know about Fred? Had they truly lost their minds (like it seems they had at the very end) then how did they set the trap?

In the end, it didn't really affect the movie for me but it was set up poorly. It seemed like they kept some things from the Still-Living part of the book even though they eliminated the Still-Living characters as a whole.

Will saw the one guy go into the light (which was a sign that they've becomes savages, a key point at the end because Will sees that they will just keep coming even if it will kill them). But in between, they are smart enough to set a trap.

It's not a huge issue but in order for this to work the audience needed to be given some sign that the zompires were smarter than Will thought. To have them devolve then set a trap and then be back to devolved is just sloppy writing.

Didn't they push her stretcher out into the main room? How come nothing was made of the female zombie at the end?

The ending made it seem like the zombies didn't care. They would slam there head into the wall until they got to Will. That is why he had to sacrifice himself. "They won't stop". Reason won't help them. This doesn't mesh with the more evolved than he thought idea.

If going into the sun meant he was more evolved, then the trap was set by the zombies but the ending doesn't make sense.

If going into the sun meant he was crazy, then Will set the trap and the ending is a sign that sacrifice was needed for the cure to survive.

I get the thinking that the zombies set the trap (which is what I originally thought) but it doesn't mesh with the ending, as I see it.

I guess you missed that part. Remember, she was behind the plexiglass with neville. That's when he took the cure from her blood and gave it to the girl after he realized he couldn't reason with them.

I do think the grenade sacrifice part was added in for a more heroic end for neville. I think the alternate ending was one of the scenes shown in the later trailers where he was surrounded by those things with that desperate look on his face (which I think would've been more dramatic and less hollywood)

That's the problem. It was Will's insanity that brought him into the trap. How did the zombies now about the mannequins? How did they know he'd go after Fred?

On the other hand, there is the whole issue with the dogs and the possibility that the zombie leader was going after his girl.

Again, the fact that it's even a discussion is a sign of sloppy writing IMO. They needed to either show that the zombies were smarter than Will gave them credit for BEFORE that scene or show him setting up the Fred trap (or other traps with mannequins earlier in the film). As it is, it can go either way.

they weren't devolving, he only thought they were. the movie simply never went into that, the way the book did.

I think the fact that the zombie leader was there at nightfall with what are basically hellhounds is a pretty clear indication it was an intentionally set trap.

that he thought he saw the head move doesn't mean he set the trap himself, he simply couldn't figure out how the hell the mannequin got there, when he believed himself to be the only intelligent one left. you've already missed every single thing that was in the movie, i.e. the entire setup for this scene, when he says" hi" to fred outside the video store. I'm really beginning to wonder if I'm the only one who paid any attention

People saw that he was talking to Fred. They also saw that as a clear sign that he was going crazy.

The ONLY evidence that it was a trap is that the zombie showed up with the dogs. Other than that, there's zero evidence that the zombies are all that intelligent. And the ending is terrible in this case: Will doesn't understand that the zombies are more intelligent than he gives t hem credit for before the trap and at the end he sees that they are smart but when he tries to reason with them, they just act like the savages he thought they were.

I'm not saying one reading is right or wrong, I'm just saying that, in this case, the script (or the editing, if they cut important parts out) was lousy.

not just that little pack in that one hideout/nest the dog ran into. For every dark building, basement, subway there was probably a nest.
If Will's charact were smart he would've taken out some of those building in the day time or at least tossed a few cocktails to blow'em up to lessen their numbers.
I think that after 3yrs the creatures had evolved just as any new civilization and them attacking Robert/Will to the point of injuring their kind and themselves didn't seem off human-wise at all, just look at the past/current actions of white racist in America, US gangwarfare, ethnic cleansing in Darfur and other terrorism/extremeist worldwide that will take out their own to satisfy bloodthirst/revenge/fears.

Maybe so. Like soulhonky said, you have to assume way too much in this film. I attribute it to lazy writing as well. My assumption was that they sleep during the night unless awakened. I mean, will was right behind those dudes and they were still sleeping. And how come no one was watching from inside a dark building when he went home every night? I'm just saying, shit is kind of flawed.

And that their sense of smell was heightened, hence he felt the need to pour ammonia on everything around his place. But again, it does call on the audience to make too many assumptions.

Anyone care to explain why Will Smith's blood was immune?

Apparently he is inexplicably the only human left on earth who is immune and we get no explanation as to why the virus cant affect him?

The other survivors didnt seem to be immune as Smith explained to the girl that (whatever number was) of the worlds population was infected, and then they attacked the remaining who weren't infected and gave them the virus. But to my understanding all the other survivors are not immune, just were able to survive.

I have a subtle question yall.. Was the fact that he revealed his dogs name to be Samantha (and not sam) only at the end when she was all sorts of fucked up from the bite meant to be done for dramatic effects? Cuz it kinda messed me up to see "he" was in fact a "she".. Dog was a cutie.

the book appears to be more about post-war evolution and finding legends(vampire) to be true when the right climate(war-germwarfare/night) allows. Even odder is that the US had supposedly won some war that caused severe dust storms creating a parastic organism killing damn near everybody and creating bloodthirsty brainless (save for a word or 2) zombies w/no superior strength. Neville finds/befriends a dog, then loses the dog(it gets sick) then finally sees another human being after 3yrs and chases her down, is suspicious of her, befriends her and is falling for her, convinces her to let him test her blood, claims he can cure her if she's infected(although he has no cure), test her blood and finds out she's 'infected' which leads to his demise along with his inability to leave his house(kinda ground zeroish) although the she-vamp warns him to hide in the mountains. In the end he finds out she's an evolved vamp w/ human functions and capable of being in sunlight for short periods of time and she's not the only one, there's a whole society developing and killing off all zombie vamps and reg.humans in which Neville is the last. Neville realizing that, looks out on this new society(now the norm) which is in fear/hate of him(now monster) and takes his life.

I think WB coulda rode with that but the war, germ/virus part got in the way.

even after children of men did well
(mind you people stil whined about the ending when i think it could have been darker as ambiguous as it was)
they get too scared
that was the book i read
and knew they would never do it
it would have worked very well
but honestly the US loves it's happy endings

if will would have done that movie
his 'street cred' as an actor would have been set
but on the other hand
he would have lost his 'we love a charismatic will'
audience
maybe he will do a tom hanks and wait til he gets older for his
saving private/cast away
role

In response to Reply # 179
Tue Dec-18-07 02:19 AM by ZooTown74

Nah

There are stars (Tom Hanks, Harrison Ford, Johnny Depp, and up until recently CROOZE) whom audiences are pretty much willing to follow anywhere and into any genre of film. Will fits neatly into that category and has arguably done so since Ali

I highly doubt that the audience goodwill toward "charismatic Will" would have been destroyed or even damaged by a movie with a "bleaker than bleak" ending -- especially one based on a novel which is 53 years old and is considered to be a literary/sci-fi classic

And Will has been beating the "I'm doing Artistic yet entertaining movies now" drum pretty loudly for the past few years (since Ali). So his audience knows what they're getting into when they go see his flicks (that is, if they're marketed properly, which this film was)

And they know the game, for every "Artistic" film Will says he's going to throw at them, they know he'll come right back with a Hitch or something else in that vein. The audience is a lot more savvy than they sometimes get credit for

On a related note, I don't know why Avika Goldsman switched up the novel's steeze. Maybe he (and the producers) thought this version made for a better, leaner story, I dunno

But I doubt it was changed up in order to satisfy Will's audience, to give them a happy ending (or in this case, a more hopeful one)

If that were the case, Will would have been more "charismatic" and "likeable," and his character would have somehow found a way to live and make it up to Vermont

Heck, it wouldn't surprise me to find out that Will was pushing for a bleaker, less hopeful ending, only to be shot down by the suits

he had fucking RIOT GATES on his crib. You probably can't install those shits a whole house in one day, let alone by Yourself. So where did he sleep while he was working on the unprotected house? ALSO, when/How did he hook up all those flood lights and landmines and shit? That HAD to take a few days ( especially if he had to work only in daylight.

>on his townhouse, was that put in before he took his wife to
>the evacuation or after?

Well things were pretty much normal up until the Evacuation, so I'm assuming that nobody knew what they were dealing with ( in terms of the Zombies), thus there was no reason for the riot gates.

How'd he survive not being broken
>into at night if not all windows were covered? Or did the the
>human zombies just run the streets?

Well, my theory is they ran the streets at night, but they didn't really have reason to stop if they didn't see/smell anything. Remember, he was within feet of them but they didn't know it until they heard him making noise. So if he was reasonably quiet at night in an unprotected house, they might not have found him.

If he could afford all
>that, why couldn't he have stronger glass down in the lab? or
>a stronger door to the basement lab?

Well you gotta think, if the outside of the house was relatively protected, he probably didn't see a reason to reinforce the inside of the house...

But, remember, he tested the human zombies before (when she was looking at their pictures on the wall) so he knew their strength, and even the rats were plinking and cracking the plexiglass.

like when he knew the zombies were on the streets, if he hid out quietly with his dog and didn't make any noise, they might've not realized he was in that house.

perhaps they didn't even have a hive in that part of town. Who knows.

I think I want to read the book now.

I thought the cgi looked like pure shit. I hated those zombie/vampire things.

The ending did piss me off but I don't think it ruined the movie for me. It was just annoying that they had a god twist when 99% of the population was killed or mutated. I don't think god should have come into play at all in it unless it was lack there of.

the doesn't have a God twist, but a faith twist. Think about it, Neville could have offed himself 3-2 yrs before when his wife and kid were killed and you gotta wonder what keeps a man going on day in out/ surviving when er'body else is apparently dead or looking to kill you, esp. when he himself does not believe in God. I think had that woman mentioned Vishnu or Buddah instead of God, folks wouldn't be so up in arms.

I agree.
Its always an issue when the word "God" enters any scene.
But, yet, people have NO problem with the devil in everything.
I've never seen people get that upset when the "devil" is a subject.
Why are people so angry at God?

We live in an irresponsible society, so when people do dumb shit we blame the lack of ceretonin in the brain or family genetics and when those things don't work then we just blame God, although we've been given the ability to do better but too lazy/selfish to be responsible. Even if one thinks God doesn't exist, why knock Him?

Deus Ex Machine is the name for an ending in which some miracle or huge coincidence occurs to save the day at the end. It means God from the Machine and it referred to the Greek plays in which God would appear (the machine being the crane that lowered him down onto the stage) and right everything and ensure a happy ending.

While I agree that many people will groan at any inclusion of God, I still think it is valid at this argument. The fact that Will's faith is suddenly turned around by seeing the butterfly is a pretty weak ending IMO. If it was Buddha or something else, it still would have been weak.

The God ending could have worked but in this case, it was just one of the many things wrong with the ending.

I don't think we saw the same movie. I thought it was warming and moments of suspense. I laud Will for stepping out and try more complex, positive and well facted characters unlike like the comic relief supporting roles in Men in Black, The Legend of Bagger Vance, 6% of Separation, etc. etc

The infected folks were hunting for people so ihe was trying to ward off his and Sam's scent by pouring that alcohol behind them and around the house.

I was confused abt it too but then it made sense once he got rescued and the lady didnt know the routine and what to do with the alcohol so they got found out by the zombies...besides the fact that they followed her to his place too.

In response to Reply # 205

This was a very good movie. Will did an awesome job of acting in this movie. I can't think of any other actor who could play this role and make it this interesting and appealing.

Some folks need to remember that it is a movie, and that this did not actually happen. No movie will show and explain EVERYTHING. If it did, it wouldn't be a 2 hour movie, it'd be LIFE. Gat damn...relax with the microscopic analyzations of every granule of the movie.

Good movie, good performance by Will.

The stuff he was pouring was vinegar.

Princeguy reviews:

"No pretentiousness.

No pompous re-interpretations.

Sometimes, a movie is just a movie. You work hard for your money.

The decision is yours.

See and enjoy what YOU like."

Many of the issues discussed here are about major events in the film.

The zompires are said to be inhuman and show that they've lost it at the end of the film (to the point that they will never stop) yet they still managed to set a trap.

The girl inexplicably makes it to New York and also was stupidly hanging out at the pier for Will to show up hours after he said he'd be there (and after dark when the zompires would be out) and saves him.

And finally, why does setting off the grenade in his hand do more than throwing it and hiding? It seemed like an arbitrary sacrifice. It's not like his holding it made sure that any more of the zompires would be killed.

I agree with you that it's a little much if someone says they didn't like the films JUST because of those issues but, still, they are legit story problems.

The "zombies" didn't set the trap.
Will's character did.
He put Fred there, and set the trap.
He had already lost it by then, his mind was playing tricks on him.
Thats why he THOUGHT he saw the Fred's head move. His mind was outta control.
And, yes, it did seem a bit arbitrary to some people about him blowing himself up with the grenade in hand. But remember..... he lost EVERYONE he ever loved.
Would you wanna live?

In response to Reply # 220

That's hardly commendable if a guy sacrificed his life simply because he was suicidal anyway.

And the trap is debatable (and is being debated above). I can see both arguments but for the ending to work at all, I think your take (that Will just lost it and the zombies are 100% zombie) is correct.

In the end, it's an average, passable movie to me. It kept me entertained while I was there and it's not one of those films with which the more you think about it, the more you like it. I wouldn't recommend it but I wouldn't tell anyone to avoid it either.

seeing that she's the only human he's seen in 3 yrs and saved his ass, I don't see how this isn't plausible. If he didn't blow himself up, they all were pretty much dead.

If it could survive a blast it could have withstood those things pounding on it. Besides, how did he even know there would be someone left that could do anything with that test tube of blood? He could have threw away any hope the world had left by killing himself. Shit just didn't make sense. It was put in just for heroic effect and that's it.

I still believe (unless there was another way to get out of there and when she said "there is still room in here", I don't think there was) if he would've crawled in there, nobody would've made it out alive grenade blast or not.

I agree this ending was put in for the typical hollywood ending, but I wouldn't categorize this as a plot hole

if he would've hid, the rest of the zompires who weren't killed by the grenade would've searched, found and killed all of them. He felt it necessary to give them what they wanted in order for the mother and child to survive in the hole. Maybe it would've been more effective if they had shown the aftermath with the zompires carrying his body out of the basement like a trophy and celebrating

While you can make an argument for why things happen, it should be left up to the viewer to figure out things like that. That's a sloppy script.

when everything but the concept of the entire movie is completely different from the book?

Lead character? Place/setting of the movie? I mean jesus, I haven't seen the movie but just started reading the book and everything seems off to me. How is this even a remote possibility? Did Matheson just collect a check and say fuckit?

I was really enjoying Will and Sam(antha) trying to survive by their lonesome in NYC, and Will still trying so hard to come up with the cure. His interactions with Sam and the other mannequins were excellent, as well as pretty much everything else.

The most interesting scene imo came after he was giving his confessional type thing after he had captured the female darkwalker, and the male had stuck his head out. Obviosuly it's an assumption, but this was the point imo where I realized that Will was completely unaware and in denial of the fact that these darkwalkers werent as primitive as he believed. Duke is so caught up in his hate and seperating himself from them that he naturally cant allow himself to think that somehow these darkwalkers are capable of forming relationships and have relatively high cognitive abilities (as witnessed by them setting that trap up and unleashing the hounds and a legion of them taking orders from that one leader). The only thing Will has left is the fact that he is the last human, and without that belief that it's his humanity vs. these primitive beasts, he wouldn't be able to maintain his motivation and will to continue the fight. I found this arch to be the most interesting of any, but it wasnt explored all that much, especially once the other humans showed up.

Speaking of the other humans, a) how the fuck were they able to drive considering all entry routes had been destroyed? Regardless of that hole, the movie really began to get slogged down by the whole 'faith' and God angle. It was interesting to see how Will refused to believe in a living colony, but other than that, there was really no more focus on his character. Even with the new humans, if the movie is relatively faithful to the book ending, this is a fucking fantastic movie through and through.

Basically, I loved everything with Will and seeing how he was adapting to this new life, and how he was blinding himself to the development of these darkwalkers.

Liked the movie. However it bugged me that in the entire camp in Vermont not a soul heard Neville's radio transmission? Like not even the armed MILITARY guards? FOH

As pointed out, the writing needed to be a little sharper and follow the book a little more faithfully. If it had been done right, it quite possibly could have been an Oscar type movie for Smith. I was hoping for something closer to the Vincent Price version "The Last Man on Earth" At least in that movie it was clear the creatures saw Neville as the monster.

propane and gas powered generators. That is why he had so many gas tanks on his explorer and filling them up at $6 dollars a gallon at the local gas station. He probably powered the stove and oven with propane.

Really I don't think he would be spending that much electricity, as during the day he went out hunting for food and supplies. At night I don't think he did too much so as not to draw any attention to him.

I know people were asking this before but it was ammonia he was spraying to cover his tracks and when he blew up the kitchen he shot a propane tank, not the ammonia, hence the explosion.

I really like the movie and thought Will did a great job. Regarding the trap, I believe it was a trap that Will set and forgot about and not one the zompires set. The trap was identical to the one he set earlier in the movie to get the girl zompire. I think he knew the zompires had a den in that building so he set it right in front of them and that is why the zompires and dogs were there to attack him at dusk. Plus you throw in the fact that he cut his head and was spilling his blood in the water and it seemed like the zompires could smell blood, a la sharks when blood is in the water and they just happened to find him hemmed up in his own trap.

that when he got caught in the trap he cut his head and began to spill blood into the water below. When he set the first trap (which was identical to the one he got caught in) he took some of his blood and smashed it into the ground. This showed that the zompires could smell spilled blood and would come looking for a meal the same way a shark smells blood in the water and comes looking for a wounded animal. Plus as someone said before, NY would have a very large zompire population and it is a great place for zompires because of all the big buildings that they could hide/live in during the day. It is clear that Will Smiths character would set a trap in front of a building that likely would have zompires in it. Look at that big hole in the building, the zompires probably tore that hole in the building to use as a door.

I believe people who have read the novel and know that in the novel the zompires set a trap for him are assuming that they took this out of the novel. However, the novel and the movie are two totally different stories with only broad similarities. I don't think the zompires were very intelligent at all in this adaptation of I Am Legend, they just happened to get lucky and were relentless.

The trap we saw him set was inside.

Setting up a trap outside would basically mean he would expect a zombie to roll up in it at night. I doubt he would be out at night, so then he would have to come back the next day and retrieve it. But why would he set up a trap outside if it didn't have a tarp like the other one? If that was the case, he would roll up the next day and he'd have a zombie who had been burned up by the sun. What would the point of that be?

I am not sure how he would have kept the zompire from burning in the daylight. However, it did seem like Will's character did stay out at night, so maybe, at times he did hunt the zompires at night, hence when he was rescued by the girl he mentions how he is careful to stay out until dawn to make sure none of the zompires follow him home when he is out at night.

He obviously did catch a lot of zompires to perform those test on them, he couldn't have caught them all during the day by going into one of their nest. It seemed when he caught the one during the day it was more because the opportunity was too good to pass up (had a possible cure he wanted to test, stumbled upon a nest and they were already stirred up by his presence) than the norm for him. When he went into that building he was genuinely scared and it didn't seem like it was something he did very often. Even though it was during the day he seemed out of his element by going into their nest.

I wouldn't be surprised if he did some hunting at night, his car was equipped with the UV lights which did a good job of scaring the darkseekers away. That trap was right outside the hole that the darkseekers used to enter/exit and Fred could have been used as bait to a zompire.

I just think it is more of a stretch to believe that the zompires, in the movie adaptation of the book could set such a trap (exactly identical to Wills, knowing to move Fred to bait will) than to believe it was one that Will set and simply forgot about.

1. It requires an attention span because not a whole lot happens and there isn't much interaction between Will and other people.

2. If this was a low budget movie made by 28 Days Later guy people would like it more, but since it was sold as a big blockbuster people will be disappointed.

3. I think they could have done without CGI zombies.

4. I didn't mind the religous twist.

One cool thing about his pad that I noticed and I have no evidence to back me up but I swear I saw Van Goghs Starry Night on the wall and some other really nice looking paintings. Now I know they could have just been reprints but seeing how he was in New York, he was the last man alive there, and he was raiding peoples places for food, CD's, DVDs, and anything he might want how easy would it have been for him to stroll into any of the museums and pick up some original art work to decorate his place.

Some people might say that would be stupid but the man was trying to save humanity and being all alone I think he would need some motivation to keep him going each day. What better than some priceless art on your walls to help remind you of the better side of humanity and why you are trying to save humanity. I could be wrong but just thought I would throw that out there.

they set the trap. they took out fred and set him up **not knowing "who" fred was but prolly figuring that whether it was fred or the bitch in blockbuster , will would come to investigate... which he did. you know it was a planned trap cause when will set the trap he had a bag that he caught the gurl zompire in. these dudes set will up so that when his leg was snared, he hit his head, thus causing blood to drip into the puddle of water which added with the heat of the day would draw the zompires to said trap. when will freed himself remember him landing into the puddle and the knife-like object piercing his leg so he can't get away??? that means it was a trap. plus the leader dude coming to the entrance of the hive with the demon dogs with a smirk on his face let's you know that it was a set-up. they knew they would catch him @ some point so the particular mannequin (sp?) didn't matter, but the fact that anything/one resembling a human would be a point to draw will into the trap.

plus, how come will first captures the chick in the black bag-in daylight, but then he supposedly gets caught in a trap he set up but forgot about and there's no bag???? how would the zombie survive if caught in the sunlight with nothing covering/shielding them from the light???

People on both sides of the argument interpret things differently and often see things that weren't even there.

I thought it was a trap but I can see how the fact that Will thought he saw the mannequin move along with the questions like "How did they even know that Will would be attracted to the mannequins when they couldn't go out during the day when Will interracted with them?" also help the alternate explanation.

In the end, it doesn't really matter all that much. The key points are Will is going crazy and the zompires (who, even if they didn't set the trap at least showed they had a leader and were smart enough to send the dogs out) weren't as lost as Will assumed.

the ending made me shake my head , I hate loosing my hero , AND his dog. FUCK!!!!

the part with the dvd store was pretty comical , and did I say will is great?

my oldest daughter (who's seen it twice) and my wife convinced me not to take him (as he's prone to nightmares). so he saw alvin and the chipmunks w/ the rest of the fam while i went to see legend... but he made me promise to tell him the whole movie.

so i'm explaining about the zombies and he's asking if they are vampires... i say, 'no, just humans who were infected w/ this virus that makes them all crazy and cannibalistic -- i broke down how 90% of the population died, 1% were immune and the other 9% became the zompires.' he said 'i thought will was the only human left. what happened to the others?'

i countered that the zompires ate them b/c they had turned cannibalistic, and he asked, 'well, why don't they eat each other?'

you know what?

i have no answer for that. another big plot hole. we just assume that the zompires don't like the taste of uninfected flesh? new york is 8 million ppl. doing the math, roughly 800k zompires running around trying to eat ONE will smith? and the occasional cgi deer?

he must have been tasty as hell, on some road runner shit.

i'm gonna rent omega man (saw it as a young dun, and it scared the shit out of me) and then read the book, in that order.

Like in the movie, he said 5.4 billion died...

(question: where are all the bodies? Cause that many people dying at once, a lot of mofo'd didn't get buried......)

then he said that left about 588 million infected and about 12 million uninfected.

Now this is worldwide. So it's not like all of the infected are in NY, or that all the uninfected are in NY either. So it seems to me a lot of those mofo's would've starved in three years and died.

man, nyc is unbearable during a garbage strike. can you imagine the smell of around 7 million rotting corpses for that first year or so? dealing with THAT shit would have been enough for me to ctrl-alt-delete.

still. these things happen in movies. especially big budget ones where the $$$ outweighs the other shit. all in all i really liked the flick and it has been thought provoking.

Great potential. The Bob/Damian Marley convo was SO awkward. I believe the Infected set the trap that messed everything up, they just wanna torment their tormentor.

Curious.. How did lil miss Brasil drag Will back to her car then carry him into his house when only protection she had was a pistol and some UV headlamps? Also, she shouldn't have told Boy to put the knife down, just SHOW it! &c &c

Real ending had to have been more impressive.

- What if virus wasn't airborne. Then make it so miss Brasil is not immune, she's a survivor (that strengthens the religious angle and would raise our/neville's interest/suspicion.) Maybe Mute Boy is the immune baby being offered up to Neville's family at the hectic Brooklyn bridge flashback scene.

- Cured woman breaks shit down to Will/Brasil about her people, that serves as breathing space before all hell breaks loose.. Cured woman somehow unintentionally 'calls' Infected (who are already tracking her) to Neville's house. Will assumes Brasil & her boy messed up.

- Infected are attacking the house like shit, Neville gives the 'I can help you' speech and Cured Woman steps forward, which makes Infected gang pause. She explains to Neville that they're here because of her and tries to reason with Infected. Will's labcam glasses capture a lot of the action.

- Infected Leader arrives late and lays low, but he isn't having it. Cured Woman is getting through to some Infected and she steps outside the plexiglass. Neville still looks down on Infected and is sure she'll fail so stows some serum and makes moves to get Brasil/boy out the building.

- Infected leader tears his ex (Cured Woman) to shreds and they all feast on her then resume the attack. The coal hole is actually a delivery chute like underground pubs have. Will and co make it outside leaving the basement intact.

- This is where Will is martyred while ensuring that Brasil + boy escape (in a manner that echoes the death of his wife/child for cinematic satisfaction). Brasil returns to the lab much later, after the fact, with armed humans where they retrieve serum and, equally important, Neville's footage.. a legend is born.
