http://www.urb.com/permalink/1166/Exclusive:-Ghostface\'s-character-in-

We know people on the inside. That's all we gots to say. Of course, we're excited for the Robert Downey Jr. starring and Jon Favreau directed Iron Man that's guarenteed to rule our summer of 2008, so there was that to be said too. But more importantly, as everyone scrambles to figure out if Ghostface is going to be in the flick, we already know what character he's going to play.

According to our reputablely drunk source--one who wishes to stay anonymous for fear of losing that cushy job--Ghostface will be playing a Sheikh living in Dubai who may or may not help Tony Stark in his quest for box office domination against evil. Apparently the flick revolves around an adaptation of Iron Man's Vietnam genesis into today's Desert Storm II world. Who would've ever made that connection? But between Favreau's proven track record, Downey's wounded hero persona, Ghostface's involvement and a tie-in to the wars in the Middle East (assuming it's not as silly as Transformers' vagueness), we really couldn't be more amped.

Ghostface Films Scene For Iron Man Movie

Ghostface

n a new interview with MTV, Wu-Tang MC Ghostface talks about his cameos in two upcoming Hollywood movies. After naming his debut album Iron Man and adopting his Tony Starks alias, Ghost's obsession with the Marvel Comics superhero has become obvious. So it's only fitting that Ghost recently shot a cameo in the upcoming movie adaptation, which stars Robert Downey Jr. in the title role and is set for a May 2008 release date. "It was a good look for the kid because Robert Downey Jr. recognized me as soon as I seen him. He was like, ‘Yo, Tony!,'" Ghost tells MTV. "For him to recognize me, I was kinda surprised by that. I didn't know he even knew about the kid. ... We called each other Tony onscreen. I'm like, ‘Tony Stark, I got your jet, I didn't mess it up.' He was like, ‘I got the Bentley for you, I laced it up.' I had two girls with me, I was like, ‘That's you .' I sent two birds at him. It was a wrap for that scene. He's a cool dude and funny. Big up to Robert Downey Jr.

Ghost also shot a scene for the upcoming biopic spoof Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, a comedy starring John C. Reiley. "We had a bugged-out scene in there, with me, Jewel, Lyle Lovett, and we did a track," he explained to MTV. "It was crazy though. ... I'mma start doing a lot of in the next year. My character on the screen is incredible. Acting is nothing for me, man. It's all an act. Rap is cool, but acting, that's my star. When you get me in front of a camera, it's a whole different aura."

How is Tony Stark in The Incredible Hulk?
Source: Ain't It Cool News
January 5, 2008

Ain't It Cool News has posted a rumor about how the Iron Man/The Incredible Hulk cross-over might work (Possible Spoiler Ahead!):

So the scene that was shot was for the Hulk with General Thunderbolt who is very important to the Hulk. Anyway, Tony Stark meets with him - which of course is a straight prelude to the Avengers Movie.

Iron Man director Jon Favreau stayed mum on the subject in yesterday's interview with MTV.

Jon Favreau Talks Iron Man
Source: Advanced Dark
January 3, 2008

Iron Man director Jon Favreau gave MTV an update about the anticipated movie:

There's a lot of effects work that's going to be happening in the next six months. The movie is pretty much going to be everything that it's going to be by the end of January. Because so much of it is animated and CGI you have to turn it over and let those people do their work on it. So we'll be done in about a month with all the big creative decisions. And then the rest of it becomes about scoring and sound design.

There's more at the link above, from the running time to the possible cameo appearances.

Will it sound robotic?
Will it sounds like the voice at the beginning of the Black Sabbath song?
Will it just be RDjr's voice with a robotic effect on it?
Will it sound nothing like RDjr?
Will it sound like Ghostface?

What do you think it SHOULD sound like?

So far everything we have seen looks great, but this is something that can totally ruin it.
I wonder if a trailer down the road will reveal this element.

Matter of fact, if they could somehow dub over Bale and Ledger's voices in TDK with Conroy and Hamill without it looking like a kung-fu movie, that would be dope.

43. "Robert Downey Jr. to cameo in upcoming Hulk movie (link & swipe)"
In response to Reply # 0

http://www.themovieblog.com/2008/01/robert-downey-jr-will-make-cameo-in-the-hulk

Rumors have been going around that Iron Man will be making a cameo in the upcoming Hulk movie and vice versa. Today we have confirmation that this is the gospel truth! We get the skinny from AICN via the moviehole:

According to Aint it Cool News, Robert Downey Jnr will be making an appearance in “The Incredible Hulk”. It’s, of course, all part of a plan to tie the new “Hulk” and “Iron Man” movies together. Downey Jr’s Tony Stark (aka Iron Man) will reportedly feature in a scene opposite “Hulk” villain ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross (William Hurt).

I think it is fantastic that they are starting to weave the characters together like they often do in the comic books. The fans want this, and it is delightful that they are making it happen. This sets the stage perfectly for an Avengers film and according to the AICN article, it looks like Favreau is calling dibs on that as well. We will wait and see if the studios reward him with aforementioned “dibs”.

Iron Man and Helm are two films that have been getting very good buzz and with good reason. They have been doing everything right as far as marketing goes. Fans have been reassured time and time again with quality teasers, pics, news and interviews. I of course am super pumped because if an Avengers movie is made - we may see the Mighty Thor join Iron Man and Hulk in an Avengers movie. If Loki is the villain in that film, there is a good chance I will cry with delight for 30 years. I also want to see a Beta Ray Bill Cameo.

Peace,

a friend of mine went to the premiere in the UK and he said the movie focused too much on IM's origin, though downey jr gives a career best performance, while paltrow is horrible. also, only two actually outings of iron man proper. he said the scenes that do have action are excellent - the suits are excellent and the ending....will be controversial. stan lee makes a great cameo, and S.H.I.E.L.D. is mentioned. also, a sequel is official. my friend said he brought two collegues who knew nothing of iron man, and they loved it.

Sick car, sick crib & some really sick suits.

The story drags at times but it's pretty funny and there's some solid action scenes. You can tell Favreau's still a little wet behind the ears behind the camera. But overall for a comic book origin movie it's pretty satisfying. I think the script could've used a little work but there's enough humor and action to entertain.

I questioned the Robert Downey Jr. casting choice at 1st but he's perfect as Starks & Ironman. Haven't seen Jeff Bridges play a bad guy in awhile & he does a great job other than being bogged down by a few bad lines. Paltrow's palpable & Terrence Howard has thee best set up for the sequel.

The fight at the end between Bridges & RDJ is worth the price of admission alone (even though I didn't have to pay) But I will on Friday still as bday present to myself. Hopefully I wont be stuck in the 3rd row again with an old lady behind me asking, "Why is he called the Ironing man?" And maybe I'll spot the Ghostface cameo if that really did come to fruition? I certainly didn't notice him & was looking for him the whole time.

I guess the thing I liked most was the transition for all the different suits, the humor, & the showdown at the end. The 1st suit is like Robocop on roids. You don't get to see too much of the 2nd suit but it looks like they might bring it back for a sequel. It's kinda hard to describe their voices in the suits but Bridges sounds menacing & funny as hell. I wish they would've kept the Ironman voice from the song/1st trailer for RDJ but oh well. I'm gonna be really excited if the sequel goes where I think it will. Especially concerning Terrence Howard's character.

B+

I mean if you thought so, to each his/her own but I'd put Batman Begins & the 1st 2 X-Men above it. And probably a few others as well. I liked it but it dragged a little too much compared to some of the other comic book flicks I've seen.

It did have the best Stan Lee cameo ever tho easily.

don't get me wrong, I was definitely satisfied with the first two XMen movies and the first two Spidey Movies, the first FF movie...but in all of em there was always 'something' i'd wished they'd done differently.

I can't say that for 'Batman Begins' though, or for 'Blade' either (at east the first two Blades)...i thought for what that needed, these were pretty damn great.

Out of all of these above, 'Batman Begins' was my previous favorite Comic Book film...

Enter 'Iron Man'...there is nothing in this one i would change at all.

The thing that put 'Iron Man' one notch above Batman Begins for me was the 'wow' factor...i was 'wow'd' by several elements...

it had the perfect balance of realism vs comic book-ism...while it felt and looked very 'legitimate' and sound on the realism front, yet the effects and situations still captured the very fantastical elements of the 'comic book' reality too..i was 'wowed'..i'm talkin 'stand up after the movie and giving high-fives to fellow cheering comic book geeks whom i didn't even know' kinda 'wowed'...none of the other films made me do that...so yeah, this one is just above the previous best for me...

also...

Downy's performance is amazing...it's absolutely perfect...casting perfection on that...
several inside 'seeds' were planted for the 'geek in the know' crew
the outside 'general public' humor was great (several laugh out loud moments in the film...all in a good way mind you, NOT groan out loud in a BAD way like in Spidey 3)
Yeah it had humor, but It was gritty too, and didn't hold back on the violence explosions etc...it was made more for grown up geeks less for the kiddies...

oh and the ending...the after the credits ending...the theater i was in ERUPTED with cheering after that scene...i'm talking comic geeks and non comic geeks...because of when you know who was being played by you know who and said you know what...that ending just KILLED it for me (Killed it in a GOOD way of course)...

so yeah to each his own, but this one is 'just' a notch above the best of the rest for me...

Yeah they did a good job of not making the Stark/Potts relationship too Velveetish. Can't say the same thing about Parker & Jane in the Spidey series.

All good reasons. I might like it a bit better when I see it again for a 2nd time today but Batman Begins & X2 still edge it out for the moment. I liked it better than the 1st Spidey tho easily.

Definitely the best Marvel outing since the first Spidey. RDJ owned that role. Bridges was surprisingly evil (nice beard, btw. Makes me want to watch The Big Lebowski again). Nice setups for sequels and other spinoffs.

The Dark Knight has a lot to live up to (although I've no doubt I'll enjoy that one even more)

And yes, stay until the end of the credits....

GREAT setup for Iron Man 2, and it's a very defining moment that fits in perfectly with his character. The end was a bit sudden afterwards, but the actual revelation didn't bother me at all.

It's kind of true to the recent issues of the comic that way. Like the kinda implied towards the end, "He's my bodyguard" worked all well and good through the 1960s and 1970s, but it would kind of wear thin these days. I liked it, thought it was in character, and made a great final moment for the film.

In response to Reply # 0

It's better than all the Spidermans. Better than Batman Begins. The only film I'd say beats it for Best Superhero Movie Ever is still X2: X-Men United.

It's THAT good.

The reason why it's the best origin film ever is because for a 2-hour flick, it zips by. It's full of humor, great characters, a terrific script, and Robert Downey Jr. I think he's possibly the best realized superhero ever put on film (maybe Hugh Jackman as Wolverine is better... we'll see when the Wolverine flick comes out). He's so good in this, I'd consider putting him on the list for the Best Actor Academy Award. He's simply flawless.

It avoids the pitfalls of other superhero origin flicks. It doesn't dwell TOO long in backstory, just enough time. The love interest is superbly handled-- Gwyneth is so good in this that the love interest storyline ALONE makes it much better than Batman Begins, which sunk back to earth every time Katie Holmes came on screen. The villain, played by Jeff Bridges, is perfectly executed, and the film is much better for having only one villain, a flaw in many other superhero flicks. We see Obediah unfold the same way we see Tony unfold. And the special effects are pitch-perfect... the CGI might be visible at times, but if you're nitpicking about that, you haven't been watching, otherwise you would've lost yourself in the film by now. It's never bad enough to be distracting, and it's often good enough to make you yell "Oh shit!" in the theatre.

Favreau knocked this one out of the park. It's clear why he was perfect to direct this-- he has imagination, he has the quippy ear perfect for Tony Stark, and he's a total and complete geek. Everything in this film was pretty much done right.

Not when Scarescrow got a hold of her. I thought Ironman did a great job not taking the Starks/Potts relationship to Velveetaville. There were a few moments when it seemed to be headed there but then the necessary detour was taken. The love interest storyline in Batman Begins is so miniscule it wasn't even a factor to me.

The villain, played by Jeff Bridges, is

I had no problem with the CGI. I just liked it better in Begins. The Oscar nominated cinematography in BB gives it an edge over Ironman imo as well.

I think they did a great job with the dialogue for Starks, the rest of the characters tho...not so much.

And don't talk about Oscars when this film certainly will be nominated for at least some technical ones, and I'd say RDJ could snag a nod on some Johnny Depp in Pirates type of shit.

It might just be preference. But the multitude of villains, the girl sucking, and the odd bits (monster bat, water evaporator) for me sink that one just a notch or two below this one.

Holmes didn't weigh BB down as much as say Dunce did Spidey. There's really not much love interest stuff goin on with her character. The only thing about her that really pissed me off was when she took Scarecrow out. That was weak sauce. But the scene with Paltrow on Bridges computer was pretty weak as well imo.

>And don't talk about Oscars when this film certainly will be

I can't talk about a well deserved Oscar nomination that Batman Begins already got, but you wanna speculate on some wishful thinking/possible noms for Ironman? C'mon.

Fair enough. I certainly did prefer the Scarecrow/Guhl villain combo over Jeff Bridges. And while Paltrow wasn't as bad as Holmes, she certainly wasn't a highlight for me either.

This is easily top 3. Still trying to see if it's better than the first Spidey or Batman Begins, but it's damn close. and most of that goes to casting Robert Downey Jr. He simply owned that role. Ghostface can no longer call himself Tony Starks. Robert is just that good. I can see him getting some love come awards time a la Johnny Depp

The story moved, so you really didn't notice many slow points (mainly anything between Pepper and Starks), and it didn't matter because Robert was saying something snappy enough to enjoy it. It struck the right balance between action, humor, camp, suspense...you get the picture.

I would be remiss not to mention Jeff Bridges wearing his best beard since playing The Dude. Regardless of his monologing at the end of the movie before trying to kill him (and even then, come on, it is a COMIC BOOK, where that is expected) he turned in a great performance as Stane. A really nice counterbalance to Robert's intensity

In a nutshell, the story was tight enough, the action set pieces were well executed (although the end battle could have been a bit longer), and the pace was just about what you want for a movie like this. But it comes down to the casting, specifically RDJ. This movie wouldn't be anywhere as good without him.

GO SEE THIS MOVIE!!!

That's a contradiction, unless you're talking strictly about the movie without regards to the original comic book. The origins of the X-Men in the movies were not even close in comparison to the comics. And Hugh Jackman, despite what almost everyone thinks, is not a great Wolverine. He's okay.

I was a BIG fan of Iron Man when I was reading comic books. They got a lot right in this movie. The casting of Stark being one of the main ones.

I also have to give the director and the special effects tem their props as well. They got the the Iron Man look and feel down from the comic book. From the jet trail behind him when he's flying down to the repulsor blasts.

Man,the REPULSOR BLASTS were tight as hell!

Batman Begins had my vote before I saw this movie. It's going to be interesting to see what the Dark Knight brings to the theaters this summer (the trailer is showing before Iron Man).

For now Iron Man is king!

Good Stuff!!!

It's in my top five for sure. I went with my girl and her dad, who cut out as soon as the screen went black, so we left before the credits ended. Guess I'll have to see it again to see what everyone's talking about. I kind of know and halfway expected it during the movie, but I guess I was wrong

I think it would have worked best if they had strayed away from the comics and made it a much darker story. I think they're gonna have to do this eventually anyway otherwise we're gonna have another fantasic four franchise on our hands.

The final scene, while technically impressive, was cheesy and implausible, even for something straight out of a comic book (if that makes any sense)

And the fledgling romance between Starks and Pepper could have been handled much better, thats one area where I think the Spiderman movies got it mostly right.

Naw. This was light years better than FF. I haven't seen the Silver Surfer yet tho.

The part where JB announces that his target mechanism was big time Velveet but I was ok with the rest of it.

Meh. I'm glad they didnt take it any further. And if they do in the sequel, I hope they do it better than the Spidey series which was the worse part of those flicks by far imo.

I think it's the best Superhero movie, EVER!!!

I thought the Nick Fury/Sam Jackson cameo at the end was dope!!!

I just can't praise this film enough!!!

I think the only negative about the film was (obviously) Gwynet Paltrow. I still thought she looked great, though.

I thought it was cool the way Terrance set up the sequel. "Maybe next time"!!!

See it!!! See it!!! See it!!! Why aren't you seeing it?!??!?

dope.
I can never surpass Jeff Bridges as "the dude", I just can't.
RDJ was awesome.
they open so many possibilities for sequal/crossover/spin-off.

the only problem was Terrance Howard as War Machine? I can't see it.
it was like Tony Starks little bitch in the whole movie, is that how James Rhodes was in the comics?

The Rhodes line after Iron Man jetted off
Nick Fury
As one reviewer said, the gadgets and suit seem somewhat believable

The product placement was groan worthy, but *shrugs*

Very good movie
Can't wait for the drunk/War Machine storyline

to other comic book flicks, which is what I initially did, I'm going to take this thing on its own terms. Which for me means it was one of the best action movies I've seen in a long, long time. I didn't necessarily have doubts Favreau could pull off the action/CGI shit, but to see him and the crew do it so damn well had me smiling, cheering, clapping and grinning the whole damn movie. Like one of the above posters said, I had no complaints and wouldn't change a damn thing about this. RDJ absolutely killed, the supporters were good, the humor was on point throughout. Flawless.

I loved it all, start to finish. I know the Batman Begins fanboys are going to come in here and try to beat this down to say their movie was better and let me tell you Batman Begins is a classic and so is Ironman. They are both classics and I think trying to square off the two movies is just pointless.

Iron Man was simply awesome.

I'm afraid Bale will look stiff by comparison to the work RDJ put in. He IS Tony Starks.

But I have faith The Dark Knight will triumph this summer. But even if it doesn't, we still got Iron Man.

In the comics that is actually his heart. You know comic book science is like *whew* and most people in the real world would be like "that is some bullshit that cant be his heart"

So they kinda made a real world application for it while keeping true to the comics. The thing is about Iron man is not that suit, Tony Starks is kinda like a cyborb in the comics. Let me break this down

Before he got hurt he had a real human heart, but he was doing inhuman things. He was acting like an ass and getting rich off people's suffering

After he gets injured his real human heart gets replaced but now he has more compassion for people then he ever had. Still he is human as he has many flaws listed in the comics (alcoholism, not being able to start a proper family, treating his fellow "superhero" brethen as underlings as opposed to friends.

His heart wasn't robotic. He had shrapnel near his heart just like the movie did. He wore a chestplate back in the day to keep the shrapnel out of his heart. (This was way back in the 60's when he was created).

Later they did the heart surgery thing and he didn't have to wear the chestplate anymore.

I have no problem with them updating the chestplate thing. Just the depth of it into his body was kinda silly.

Great movie.
RDJ was awesome.
Could have been a little shorter.
I would have liked to see more of a fire fight in the final scene.
But overall, this was a pretty good flick.

This movie has been bouncing around between studios since 1990. I'm glad it took this long to get developed, written, for Favreau and RDJ to come aboard. Sometimes development hell is a good thing!

A few years ago it was a Spielberg/Cruise project. Marvel and the production folks were at each others' throats over everything. Nothing came of it, and now we have an Iron Man movie where Marvel paid for everything themselves, which means they had complete creative control over one of their film properties for the FIRST TIME EVER. The results speak for themselves.

Next up: Hulk. Same situation.

I avoided this post like the plague the last week, so I MISSED THE ENDING CREDITS!

Fuck, Sam Jackson as Nick Fury has to be the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Not sure where I rank it in the pantheon of superhero movies, but it's not better than Batman Begins. I never got the chills and mark-out moments in this film that I did in BB.

Downey was great as Tony Stark, but I hope in the next film (I'm going to make the safe assumption that the strong box office and good reviews will guarantee a sequel) they delve more into other facets of his personality, namely the darker, boozier side. I know this is an origin movie, but the character itself felt a bit too two-dimensional.

Dug all the foreshadowing (Rhodes, SHIELD, didn't catch the Mandarin stuff until I read this thread) and the final battle was pretty kickass.

I'm probably more pissed about the lack of a Ghostface cameo than I should be, but Ghostface as a sheik in IRONFUCKINGMAN would've been all types of greatness.

Overall, very entertaining, will recommend.

Enjoyed the HELL out of it. RDJ was fantastic and not knowing much about the Iron Man character...I have to say Tony Starks is so amazing as a character. This was one of those movies that was the OPPOSITE of stuff like X-Men, Spiderman, etc. because you never once say, "Okay...c'mon...get to the part where you become the superhero..." You WANT to see more of the pre-Iron Man Starks stuff.

So damn good. Loved it.

Like I said, hopefully they explore the man more in the sequel, but I actually wanted to see more about the character of Tony Stark. It didn't feel fleshed out enough, especially when you consider what an interesting character Tony Stark really is.

After the credits, Tony enters his mansion and calls out to Jarvis, whose response is slightly off... suddenly a voice calls out: "I am Iron Man." Tony discovers that someone's in his crib, standing over by the window. The voice continues: "Did you actually think you were the only superhero in the world?" Tony asks who the guy is. The guy -- Samuel L. Jackson -- turns around and identifies himself as "Nick Fury," and says he wants to talk to Tony about something called the Avengers Initiative.

Fade to black.

As has been said many times, RDJ nailed it. All the supporting actors nailed it (I guess the reporter was kind of annying). The tone was spot on.

The only stuff I didn't like had nothing really to do with the movie itself. I've always hated Iron Man-origin, even though the comic book was one of my favorites growing up. I think it's tremendously out-dated, especially in the day and age of open-heart surgery. That said, I guess they made it work, and stayed true to "meaning" behind the whole fake heart.

Everything about it was well done but for some reason I just didn't get that involved or into it. I think the villain might have been the issue. Also, there were a few moments when I actually had to think to myself, "It's a comic book movie, there are going to be silly plot holes." to give it a pass on some sillier moments.

Still, a very well made film. Hopefully the second one will have a better villain.

Edit: On a side note, it was killing me trying to figure out whose voice was Jarvis. It's Paul Bettany.

i do not anticipate getting a doc ock level villain in either of the sequels

titanium man, crimson dynamo, and mandarin are really the best he has and none of them are half as compelling as characters. some creative writing can go a long way, but i anticipate the best "villains" being tony himself in the next two.

...if they feel so inclined. The problems with guys like The Mandarian, Crimson Dynamo, and Titanium Man is that they're all pretty Cold War-based and therefore pretty dated. To let my comic-nerd out for a sec, there's some cool villains they could fuck around with in the future, like the Living Laser (they could do some interesting CGI shit with him), The Ghost (industrial saboteur first used in the mid-'80s), Spymaster (corny name, decent villain), or even Justin Hammer (evil Donald Trump type-industrialist, though he might be a little redundant after Stane).

one of the things I want them to do is to become more open when it comes to the villains they choose. Not every superhero has great villains, so why not use one from another comic? Have Iron Man fight Ultron or something. Let the Hulk go at the Juggernaut, etc.

Fun is the new gritty

It's not better than Batman Begins (NOPE! It ain't), even if Batman Begins had Katie Holmes in it. And I'm not going to expound any further, so please don't ask!

Anyway, it was a lot of fun, and surprisingly very funny in spots. Great jokes ("I was doing a piece for Vanity Fair"), and the two Terence Howard "joke flips" were hilarious (where Terence would say he wasn't going to do something, like drink on the plane, or say that something was a training exercise, then we'd cut to Terence drinking or explaining that what happened was an unfortunate training exercise)...

And after seeing Downey in the role, I can't think of any other person who could have pulled it off... he's such a smarmy-yet-likeable cad... this movie was not really about the plot and the villain so much as it was about this character (shoot yourself, k_orr)... which leads me to my problem with the movie... it was just really hard to buy that this guy, who was pretty much a hawk for a great deal of his life seemingly and suddenly changes and decides to stop profiting from war, after nearly getting blown up. It's a great stance to take and all, but it was just hard to believe that the change would occur so suddenly... and it's not like he was so close to the guys he was platooning with that he felt such a great sense of loss which made him change (as part of his transformation he *did* refer to the fact that he could no longer stand to "profit from seeing kids die," or something like that, but it just didn't feel earned to me)...

(and I don't really care about "but in the comic book he changed when...," we're talking movies here, thanks)

Problem is, I don't quite know how you could pull his philosophical change off and not make the movie longer than the 2:05 that it currently is...

Anyway, I had fun... the post-end credits cameo got me really hyped for the sequel... just like the final 2 minutes of Batman Begins got my hyped for The Dark Knight...

But still, NOPE, Batman better.

after getting shot at, almost blown up, 3 months in the cave. a change of heart is reasonably believable, no?

i agree with ur sentiment that it in NO way trumps Batman Begins, and TDK will no doubt own it when it's released. everyone's on Iron Man's jock right now cos yeah it is a dope movie, it's got RDJ, Favreau etc. i have no info on the character and know nothing about the history of the comics n i enjoyed the fuck out of it.

but when it comes time to "best comic-book movie" discussion again in a few months time, bet TDK is gonna be at the top of that list.

Bear in mind that he was imprisoned in that cave for three months. Three months of being surrounded by people who were using his technology and weapons not to protect the peace, but to increase their own power. And three months were Stark's only really meaningful human contact is with a man who was a victim of his technology in the wrong hands. I can believe that profoundly changing someone.

Batman Begins was indeed better, but this was damn good.

the ambush was distressing enough, then he gets blown up by his own bomb and stuck in a cave with a doctor who lost his entire family to his own weapons and who later dies.

And it is better than Batman begins. I can barely ever remember who the villains were in that and its best action scene is an exceedingly generic car chase. Then there's Katie Holmes.
Everything about Iron Man is just so much more alive and convincing.

This is such a flimsy and namby pamby point it's digusting.

drinking and kicking jokes, and his protective entourage becomes cannon fodder because of his weapons.

Captured by cats using his weapons

forced to make more of his weapons

his boy gets killed by his weapons

Did we watch the same movie?

Or did Tony not feel enough connection with ol boy in the cave to have a change of heart.

It's almost dying not enough to switch things up

smh.

In response to Reply # 0

is also the same reason that Batman Begins worked so well...they stayed very true to the comics. there was no adding or removing characters. there was very little change to his origin. even his enemies origin was the same. for the geeks who have been reading the books for ever, there's tons of homages and references. and for the people who've never heard of Iron Man or don't know much, it works for the same reason the comic books worked in the first place: it's just a great story about a great character.

my only issue with Iron Man has nothing to do with this movie. i'm more concerned about the sequels. mainly the villains. Iron Man's story is good because of Tony Starks internal struggles. honestly, most of his villains are other dudes in suits (Titanium Man, Crimson Dynamo, Whirlwind, etc). since they already went there, this will seem like a rehashing of Iron Monger (whom i never liked, but found new respect for in this film). Mandarin, while he's a formidable villain is a little too old school for a modern movie. he was a little scary in the 60's, but i don't think anyone would be scared of a dude with rings from space. they're going to have to work hard to try to include this dude.

now where i would like to see them take this movie, since they've included SHIELD, Nick Fury and the possibility of the Avengers, is have the villains be an organization like AIM or HYDRA. that's a bit more realistic for this day and age. they could even link the terrorist group who kidnapped him to one of these groups.

i only got 1 problem with this film.

When Obadiah took Tony out... JARVIS DIDN'T DO ANYTHING!

huh? no alarm, no calling up crew, not even locking the doors...hmmmmm

but I guess in this case Cap, she-hulk and thor don't exist (or exist yet) so it's ok

what would have been odd about that?

true jarvis might have been able to read his biorythyms or whataver, but stane was always in the house with some sort of tech...

jarvis was fooled just like toney

also toney had removed his "heart" in the past so jarvis was familiar with the routine of toney's vitals dropping and his core missing.

i was expecting jarvis to put in a call to rhodey or potts though

(or at least should be)

i'm assuming that he knew Obadiah so he might not have raised an alarm. on the other hand, Obadiah was probably very familiar with Tony's tech (like the sonic thingy he disabled him with), which would make him capable of disabling Jarvis.

as far as Nick Fury, c'mon, he's the head of SHEILD! i'm sure he can do whatever he wants.

Pepper Pots sets off the breach alarm as she downloads stuff from Tony's computer, Obadiah shows up and talks to her, and then just lets her walk away because she turned the screensaver on.

Obadiah in general was kind of hilarious since he just kept telling Stark he was evil like Stark wasn't going to retaliate in any way.

Yeah, I think I would rather see an immediate Avengers movie as the sequel, but with this movie making 100 million opening weekend, I doubt that would happen first. Plus, they probably need to do a few more origin stories for some of the other Avengers, at least the bigger names, like Captain America and Thor (which I heard was coming at some point)...

I still put this movie right up there with Batman Begins they are 1A and 1B, for me with Iron Man getting a little bit of an edge from me, because I've always been a Marvel guy versus DC...

Just kidding. Shit was DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPE!!!

I would say easily a Top 5 comic book super hero flick. Maybe even Top 3. Hell if it was your #1 pick I wouldn't be mad.

A lot of stuff going for this flick. Numero uno, Robert Downy Jr... His personality fit the character so well, and his talent allowed him to get all the complexity of Tony Stark across without weighing the movie down too much. People are comparing his performance here to Johnny Depp in Pirates. I can kinda see it. He wasn't the *only* good thing about the movie, but in a lot of ways he still carried it.

The effects! They DIDN'T SUCK, people. In fact they looked damn good. Only in the final battle when Lebowski's suit was cracked open did things become slightly jittery and CGI looking. Very minor though.

I'd say if the movie lacked for anything it was probably a decent supervillain. Bridges did his thing, and he was the kind of villain who made sense for a movie like this, and because we've seen hundreds of villains like him we were able to fill in the blanks on our own - which is good because he got very little time to develop - But in the end he did seem a little generic and underwhelming. This however, did not detract one iota from the badassness of that final fight.

And I know the fanboys are making a huge deal out of that Nick Fury ending... Yes, it was incredibly cool*. But for my money the better ending happened right before the credits, when Tony announced to the press he is Iron Man. That shit was greatness. It was such a Tony Stark thing to do, and it put a strong punctuation mark on why Iron Man is a fresh addition to the ever growing pantheon of comic book movies. Just when you think we're approaching superhero burnout, along comes Tony Stark. That's the kind of ending that has the audience walking out of the theater ready to buy their Iron Man 2 tickets.

Now regarding Tony's "life change" in those caves - They compressed 3 months into 15 minutes so yeah, it's going to feel a little rushed. But here's what I'm predicting for part 2 : Tony didn't change THAT much.

He may have found his purpose, and the inner strength to become Iron Man. But is he strong enough to keep it up? I'd like to see Part 2 be slightly darker, with Tony even more conflicted than before. Like someone already said, he really is his own worst enemy.

* Ain't no way they're making a decent Avengers movie in my lifetime. I just can't see it.

But even more than that I think it's the best comic book adaption period. Batman Begins and X2 are both very well done. But neither move was as "fun" as Iron Man. Despite the film maintaining a serious story line, it never loses it's ability to shift back into "fun-mode" when warranted. Downey really does deserves much of the credit for this. I can't think of a more perfect performance in a superhero movie. Let's hope this is a game changer and will mark the end of comic book material being given the FF4 treatment.

"The casting of Robert Downey Jr as Tonk Starks seems like one of the more natural fits in big movie comic adaptations. Both recovering alcoholic playboys with chips on their shoulders. Seems Bob wouldnt really have to do much acting like Pac in juice. Good choice.

I am not sure how familiar Jon Faverau is with the Iron Man character & his place in the Marvel Universe but judging by this movie he is familiar enough. This is one of the better comic book adaptations I have seen in a while. The director manages to balance the oft conflicting priorities of making a blockbuster US movie true to decades of comicbook lore. You have to please the 5-12 age range as well as their soccer-mom parent who took them there. Then theres the 25-40yr old comic geeks (yours truely) who are the hardest group to please.
Thankfully IRON MAN finds a happy median for all stakeholders.

THE HERO: I've always liked flawed heroes. The darker the better it seemed. The modern-day version of Tony Starks is certainly no choir boy. An alcoholic womanising billionaire playboy inventor with a chip on his shoulder *cough*Bruce Wayne was created 50yrs earlier*cough*. My kind of guy! The movie is true to this. Think James Bond after one too many "shaken not stirred" whatever it is he drinks (I know. I don't drink. Sue me). This provides for interesting motivation for our "anti"-hero. Supposedly this makes him more human & believable..well as believable as a billionaire inventor with an injured heart in a flying around in a metal suit can be.
Faverau does well to highlight Tony's inadequacies without making it ALL about his struggles with the bottle. Can you can "The Invincible IRON MAN"?
"If I was that drunk I would not have been able to stand let alone give a speech.."

THE VILLIAN. As admitted earlier I am not up on IRON MAN like I am on say BATMAN (Dark Knight coming SOON..I can't WAIT!..) so I am not familiar with Obadiah Stane / Iron Monger the chosen villian in this installment. As far as I have learned the really popular villian was the Mandarin but I think this villian may be dated given the current political landscape & US foreign policy. Understand that villians are indeed based on what is currently considered anti-Liberty Justivce truth & the American way etc.
The choice of the Iron Monger is good in that it allows us to explore the missing father- continuing my Daddy's legacy...but not living in his shadow.. oh but I hated Daddy never being there... but I think Daddy was a bad man.. but I'll never know arc which gives dimension to our hero.
Faverau does well to introduce us to the company man that is O. Stane without spending too much time focussing on the villian's development. Afterall we should all know what motivates "company men"
Its easy to hate him for we work with him everyday.

The "Love interest" - Without knowing too much about the Pepper Pots in the Marvel Universe it appears Gwyneth Paltrow does a decent job in a girl next door but still hot kind of way. This character allows the director to satisfy the Soccer moms in the audience a she is your classic do-gooder girl next door foil character that gives our hero the "he's not that bad... even Players can fall in love too" side which off course is mandatory when making big Hollywood blockbusters.
I was happy that they did not make this the central theme of the movie (see: Peter parker dancing in the streets in Spidey 3). There is enuff to make the girls feel good spiced up with enough humour to keep the guys from throwing up. No Hugh Grant is NOT Tony Starks.
"You left me on the roof"

The Best Friend - Samuel L Jackson is usually the token black guy in the movie (see Star Wars & whatever that flick with the Shark in it was) but wait he's not the token...or is he..
Terrence Howard went from Pimp to Super Hero..well Super Hero's best friend. I want that guy's job!
Tony Starks is the anti-hero, War Machine is your more typical all American pure hero (please do NOT make a Captain America live action adaptation!). His relationship with Tony is good for showing that even though Tony is a hero he is flawed when considering your typical "hero makings" which makes him that much more personalable (aforementioned absurdities withstanding).
Enough of him is introduced to have enough to build on should they go down the path of a War Machine movie. Can you say War Machine Armour?..
"That is the coolest thing I have ever seen"

The effects are decent. Lucasfilm has always been very good at incorporating CGI in live action movies. I feared that it would be another Transformers debacle with blurry robots slurring & duct & debris everywhere. While there is not much hardcore action the little there was looked slick. Full marks to LucasFilm. IRON MONGER Armour is a BEAST! Kids cover your eyes! The dialogue between IRON MAN & IRON MONGER was true to comic 1 liners. "This looks important!"

Comic geekery. The movie is sprnkled with enough subtle references to items in the comic folk lore to have us geeks adjusting our bottle glasses & snorting merrily. Geeks are snobs so we want things in the movie that the rest of the audience wouldnt get so we can feel that we are better than everyone else...yes we are an insecure bunch that needs to have our ego's massaged constantly. IRON MAN scores high on the geeky titbits scale! & YES you have to stay until the end with the geeks...
"I am IRON MAN!"

Overall I will say this is the best comic book adaptation I have seen since Batman Begins..dare I say maybe even better..
The foil characters really inform the main character & contribute to his development throughout the movie without having the viewer lose focus on the central theme.

8/10 GREAT ADAPTATION!"

I couldn't make it through Scanner Darkly but Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is probably going to go down as one of the most underrated films of this decade.

Dialogue-wise, Juno is the exact same kind of movie. It's very self-aware, and very smart-assed. But that dialogue doesn't make Juno a "pretentious" film. Not in the slightest.

And yes, I know what the words pretentious and ostentatious mean.

But the dialogue for both films isn't aiming to be anything other than what it is, which is, again, self-aware and smart-assed. Now, one could argue that it's *too* aware and *too* cute for itself, but to me, that doesn't make it "pretentious."

To me, to say that something is "pretentious" or even "ostentatious" is to say or imply that it's trying to be "arty" or "high falutin'." Now I know that that kind of "film as art" talk is frowned upon by many around here, but that's how I look at it.

Nonetheless, Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang isn't aiming to do anything other than entertain. And for me, it did.

Because I don't think anyone loves Iron Man more in Hollywood than Jon Favreau (except Kevin Smith maybe).

And Marvel's really firing on all cylinders now after a couple of disappointing years (in general). They're showing how you properly introduce a franchise with multiple leading characters.

I'm pretty sure that the decision to go back to the Hulk had everything to do with a possible Avengers movie. Too bad DC can't really do the same thing with their movies. I'm predicting that Thor will be a decent hit around Fantastic 4 levels and Captain America will be a serious hit that'll rival Iron Man's numbers. And the Avengers movie will wreck whatever DC comes out (even if it's Batman)

I'm still hoping that Marvel will roll the dice on some of its smaller properties and try to reboot Daredevil.

for starters, hes in a cave constructing the iron man suit instead of the missle under constant video surveillance and they have no clue what hes doing? And then the dude comes into the room and looks at the fucking blueprint for the suit.... and says you have 1 day to finish the missle? that part was too hard for me to believe.

next, jeff bridges is able to build this giant fucking robot suit in what... less than 2-3 days? Hes not the engineer RDJ was, so that was wayyy too far fetched that he built that on his own.

and finally, this is minor, but no way that dude from SHIELD (or whatever the acronym stood for) survived that attack. he showed up at the end and im like wtf, this dude is alive???

so with that said, i thoroughly enjoyed the movie, but thats not to say its without its fair share of flaws. Now Batman Begins on the other hand? Ha!

not saying this fills the gap, but remember the blueprints only showed the suit if you placed them on top of each other in a certain sequence. otherwise, they just looked like separate parts of a system.

Of course he could get it done in a short amount of time.

And my man up there explained the cave blueprints.

I think you just mad cause Batman Begins finally got some comp as far as best adaptation. LOL

really the only bad thing about the movie was the constant video surveillance yet had no idea he was building a giant suit, but after that, no arguments here.

excellent CGI, I thought the acting was outstanding, perfect cast, and a lot of funny parts. the robots were even funny.

Maybe next time...like really, they could've gotten a c-list actor to do what he did.
And the choice of villain, umm, whack. It was borderline Hulk'ish to me, like i'm not impressed. Again, good movie but they need to beef up their villain department over there at marvel.

... corny dude in tights. It was perfect for this movie.

And Terrance Howard is a smart man and probably a comic book fan because he knows that his character not only gets to be Iron Man at one point, but he will eventually become War Machine.

which would that c lister can do war machine next movie too, right? ths is excellent thinking. he gets an expanded role in the sequel as a major character. this film is a franchise genesis. there is at least one other IM movie coming out plus the avengers flick. i would still say hold out for an iron man 3 proper or even a war machine spin off. this casting was done with big picture thinking in mind.

monger wasn't even the villain; stane was. and it was well done.

... while Tony is battling his increasing alcoholism.

What I would do: Have Terrance take up the mantle of Iron Man mid movie in Iron Man 2. Then in the Avengers movie give him the War Machine armor.

lost a 1/2 bb cuz of the villain and cuz the storyline was kinda sparse, leaving me time to pick apart the logical leaps

needed more suspense

and lost the other 1/2 bb cuz they cut the ghostface scene

prolly will be top 3 of the summer tho

The casting was excellent(Gwyneth actually looked relatively sexy too for the first time lol), in particular RDJ. You really cannot envision anyone else pulling off the smart-ass yet so likeable Tony Stark as well as he did....duke is tailor-made for the part.

The visuals were excellent, I loved how much time and detail they put into him making the suit(it really gives you a sort of connection with the suit itself) and it executed the origin aspect very very well.

The visuals by ILM were fucking fantastic, and being a native of LA, it only made it more interesting to see what parts of the city they would use(and I really hope Tony's house has quite the deep foundation because otherwise, one Malibu rock slide, and that mug is chilling in the ocean or crushing cats on Zuma beach lmao).

My only negative....the villain, who was still played quite well by Jeff Bridges for what its worth, just didn't have the sort of emotional resonance that woulda really made me hate him. Just something was missing.

Anyways, other than Batman Begins, easily the best super-hero movie I have ever witnessed. Very excited for the sequels....AVENGER INITIATIVE!

They are just two very good movies and let it be.

RDJ did a hell of a job, Jeff Bridges was a good villian, stop nitpicking.

That paralyzing jount was ILL. 15 minutes, no moving.

Pepper Potts is not an ugly lady, but she is NOT sexy. She still has that boy body, regardless of the skirt, and heels don't be fooled.
