http://www.darkhorizons.com/news07/070714a.php

Question: But in that movie you're hidden under makeup though right? So how does that work?

Eckhart: Well I will only say that in Batman I am both Harvey Dent and Harvey Two-Face.

Question: And you're playing the same character that was once played by somebody else.

Eckhart: Yeah.

Question: That must be pretty tricky.

Eckhart: Well I see no connection between the two. And I've not had any discussions about that. That's one thing about movies. What somebody else did is what somebody else did. In soap operas you're willing to believe that a character can come back to life. Basically, you just want that guy on screen. You don't care what happened before. It's like balance. I mean J.R. could come back today and nobody would care. I mean nobody would care about the logistics of him coming back. So I don't think people are going to get hung up on my performance versus Tommy Lee's. It's just two different things.

Question: Well the fun of Dark Knight is the fact that there's this duality that you have to portray ...

Eckhart: Definitely.

Question: ... which must be the hook for you as an actor.

Eckhart: Well there's several hooks for me, none of which I can talk about, but I will say that I like the character. I like playing this guy. This guy has likeable attributes, characteristics. And it really, as in this whole Batman going through it, it's really a mirror of our times in a lot of ways. It's a comment on what's going on in the world today. And my character fits into that really nicely. And everybody's character does from Lieutenant Gordon to the Joker. I guess Batman is just trying to make sense of what's going on and trying to fight a fight that maybe he doesn't totally understand.

Question: And the makeup is not too much of a pain in the ass?

Eckhart: No all that stuff helps - everything helps an actor.

Question: And with Batman are you prepared to face the onslaught of the comic book fans that are going to be scrutinising every facet of this?

Eckhart: I don't think I understand what this entails.

Question: Good luck. That's all I can say.

Eckhart: That's what I've been hearing.

Question: I'll see you at Comic con next year and you'll be 'Oh my god, what have I let myself in for?'

Eckhart: They didn't pay me enough.

Question: Enjoy it while you can.

Eckhart: I will, I will. I can't imagine. But you know what, I'm there with veterans, you know. I mean Christian's been through it and Chris and I think Heath is going to take the brunt of it. Let me tell you. Heath is going to be spectacular in this movie.

Question: You've seen him in the makeup?

Eckhart: Yeah. Heath is going to be amazing.

Question: What about being on a Chris Nolan set?

Eckhart: More so than ever with Chris is that it feels like he's just making a movie with the family, because everybody stays on set. It's very mellow, he works with the same people all the time. So it's very familiar.

In response to Reply # 23

first off theyre trying to make clear that they rebooted the franchise
second the stuff im talking about IS what the marketing is
its anouncements on the toyline
its press sheets
its everything to get investors and the whole name out
theyre not just going to add the 'batman;' to it a month prior to the release
if you dont buy it great, watch in a week or so when the teaser trailer pops up

IMAX press release (partially):

In an unprecedented move, director Christopher Nolan is filming four sequences in the next installment of Warner Bros. Pictures' Batman franchise, "The Dark Knight," with extremely high resolution IMAX® cameras using the giant 15/70 film format. The announcement was made today by Jeff Robinov, President of Production, Warner Bros. Pictures. While it is not unique for a feature lensed on traditional 35mm film to be re-mastered to screen in IMAX® theatres, this marks the first time ever that a major feature film has been even partially shot using IMAX cameras, marking a revolutionary integration of the two film formats.

I won't lie, I'm interested, and not just because they were filming part of this down the street from where I lived AND down the street from where I work (I live in Gotham City, bitches), but...

I don't know, we know that at least the Joker, Two-Face and the Scarecrow are all in this one. Apart from that they introduce a new heroine, and still have to give at least a decent amount of attention on Michael Caine, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman.

Christopher Nolan has more going for him than, say, Sam Raimi, but...I don't know...this is starting to look at little Spiderman 3ish.

29. "Teaser trailer description *SPOILER*"
In response to Reply # 0

from SHH:

I have seen The Dark Knight Teaser. I don't want to reveal everything...

It starts out with the WB logo gracing the screen, followed by the DC logo and the Legendary pictures logo. The screen goes black.

It opens back up as a commercial paid for by the friends of Harvey Dent. We are shown shots of him talking, making public speeches, and walking in a suit, while a deep voice comes on and talks about Harvey Dent. A generic politician commercial.

What seems to be halfway through the commercial, it is interrupted by static, and blacks out. Out of nowhere a crystal clear image comes onto the screen of a blacked out man with large windows behind him. The camera slowly zooms in on him. He's talking (about what I won't say) and as he finishes he begins laughing. Lightning strikes, lighting up his face, as the laughter grows more manic. Cut to black.

The Batman Begins (now The Dark Knight's bat) emblem is shown with the words The Dark Knight. Then it says Summer 2008 and has the website at the bottom.

What is said... is a surprise that I must keep for now. It gave me chills.

Petty? Maybe. It's not like it would ruin everything, but I mean it's the clown prince of crime we're talking about here. And though I praised the Ledger casting from the jump, under my breath and in the back of my head I couldn't really see him nailing that specific part of the character.

If this is real... well, I stand corrected. Dude sounds fucking crazy.

In response to Reply # 0
Mon Sep-03-07 01:08 AM by SammyJankis

I can only hope this is true, I am a big fan of Harley Quinn from Batman : TAS and I would love to see her in this with the Joker.
...

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/33863

Hey folks, Harry here... According to ThisIsNottingham.co.uk there's a rumor that a British Soap star has traded in the suds, for pancake makeup and lap position on Heath Leadger's JOKER in THE DARK KNIGHT. Or is she? There's a lot places for a beautiful actress in a small part in THE DARK KNIGHT, but at this point, I've heard nothing about Harley Quinn - or even her pre-identity appearing in the film - and nothing in any of the original source articles give details on her role. So - as much as many of you want to see the Joker's wet dream, and ours... Nolan has been grounding this series more than making it a Where's Waldo affair. But who knows - maybe the toy companies have gotten to him...
...
Another one about Sarah Michelle Gellar possibly playing her.

http://spaceramblings.blogsome.com/2007/03/29/sarah-michelle-gellar-to-play-harley-quinn-in-the-dark-knight/

Rumor has it going around that Sarah Michelle Gellar will be appearing as the Joker’s sidekick, Harley Quinn the Batman Begins sequel, The Dark Knight. Harley Quinn \ Dr. Quinzell, was a character created in the Batman animated series, which then appeared in the comic books and now will apparently make the transition to film as well.

81. "Batman News: Batman To Have "Scary White Lenses" (SWIPE)"
In response to Reply # 0

http://filmwad.com/batman-news-batman-to-have-scary-white-lenses--5023-p.html

This is interesting. Looks like Batman's new mask (in "The Dark Knight") has a "Bat-sonar detection" mode (whatever that means) that turns his eyes a scary shade of white. Though this information is coming from a Yahoo-translated German site, so some of the details might be lost in the language shuffle.

Other news from the site (also translated) that's less surprising? We know Batman goes to Hong Kong to do "gangster hunting;" we know the preview of the flick showing during the "I Am Legend" IMAX screenings will be the first five minutes of the film and we know the film doesn't totally explore the origins of the Joker. It's very interesting that this flick more than any we've seen in a while has had a steady stream of information leaks since DAY ONE. There were set photos since the first day. One wonders if it's all planned. Hmmm.

But still…white lenses? Crazy!

98. "How The Joker Meets The Dark Knight ***Spoiler***"
In response to Reply # 0

note: not too big of a spoiler but a cool plot point to introduce the joker.

The Clown Prince’s Ransom: How The Joker Meets The Dark Knight

http://www.filmschoolrejects.com/news/the-clown-princes-ransom-how-the-joker-meets-the-dark-knight.php

Our good friends over at LatinoReview.com shot an awesome tidbit about The Dark Knight over to us. It seems that Kellvin Chavez has some insider news on how the Batman will be introduced to The Clown Prince in this highly anticipated flick. This news might just be able to stifle all of the negative criticism around the look of Heath Ledger’s Joker. This news has definitely brought some more excitement to the project.

Kellvin Chavez of LatinoReview.com has just reported some news around The Dark Knight. His anonymous source has leaked a huge plot point for the introduction of The Joker and Batman. This might be considered a spoiler, but it just makes me even more excited about the film. Here is what his source has to say:

“The Dark Knight begins with the Joker robbing a huge bank (we’ve seen photos of this everywhere). The bank is where the mob and all the gangs in Gotham keep all of their money. The Joker takes this money and holds it “ransom”. The Joker then says to the mob and the gangs of Gotham, “If you help me take down Batman, you’ll get your money back. If not, I’m going to burn it all.” This is how the Joker assembles his army to take down Batman.”

In my humble opinion, this makes the film’s prospect a whole lot more interesting. Keep reading for more coverage of The Dark Knight.

The amount of money that the mobs/gangs have in the bank may be small compared to what they have "stashed"

Banks provide legal "cover" for operations that have legitimate business arms/concerns..

The robbery is more of an affront to those crime families rather than a crippling blow to their capital concerns. Imagine the "Roman" being like: "Ah... It's just our legal bank account...I'll let that slide..."

maybe it was a mutual agreement between all the gangsters that everyone would keep their money in that one bank and that would be the ONE bank that nobody ever robbed.

i like this premise of joker baiting all the mobsters and gangsters to help him hunt down batman. its sets up a stong threat right off the break - unlike in batman returns where you have to wait 1/2 thru the movie to find out the evil plan of the penguin is to have his army of penguins kidnap the kids of gotham (yawn)

...anything over that amount is *whoosh*....."your loss"

Any bank robbery is bad.... But asserting the "Joker context" and comic proportion...he probably has arranged to CLEAN OUT the entire bank.

That...is/would be crippling to the local "Gotham" economy as there are no doubt, many legal businesses and interests tied to the bank. The mob has to clean their money too...

Reference: "The Long Halloween" trade..... particularly the portion that references "The Roman" and his warehouses that are just holding cash... That should put the concept in better perspective. The Joker will have effectively made the mob families "Legally Broke"..... While they have plenty of "Dirty Money"...the lifestyles they lead are justified by the "Laundered Money".... Anything else would incriminate them to Federal concerns....

The plot point of the Joker ransoming their "Laundered Money" is brilliant!

"Behind every great fortune...there is a crime...."

I think it does. it fits as much as it can in a world where a man dresses up like a bat.

giving him a scarred face due to skin lacerations rather than a fixed smile seems a little more believable in this world of batman. i think the face paint ends up being smeared due to chemical burns. nailing the personality is the most important.

It looks like the first place you’ll be able to get a good look at The Dark Knight won’t be online or in theaters. The guys over at the Brazilian site Omelete say a 7 minute, Joker-focused teaser for the film will show for the first time in IMAX cinemas in front of Will Smith’s I Am Legend this December.

in this batman universe, the joker should look freakish, somewhat deformed, and definitely someone you would not want to see face to face. nicholson's version in nolan's version would not be very threatening. from what we can tell so far, dude is straight disturbed. his dialogue in the beginning is interesting.

its still amazing that bale was even cast as batman. i guess ledger was a bit more well known going into this movie, but its still such an unlikely choice for a blockbuster film. it was a smart move casting almost all of the supporting roles with high profile actors like cain, freeman, and oldman.

fans base their picks mostly on looks
and on previous roles more so than the real acting talent meaning that they pick actors who have done a comparable role so to prove their point

the thing they dont think of when studios/directors eventually pick people like ledger is that we as fans know NOTHING about this movie at that point

people were crying out how ledger was a stupid choice but its not as if they had read the script or know nolan's vision on this character and who fits that best

fanboys need to stfu

Okay, did anyone else know about this??? What really gets me hyped up is the fact that Bruce Timm is directing these shorts.

Basically, a series of animated shorts will be made (kinda like the Animatrix) but will be set during the time between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

LINK:
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2007-12-08/japanese-anime-studios-confirmed-for-batman-video

"The "2008 Movie Spectacular" special issue of Wizard magazine reports that Japan's Studio 4°C, Production I.G, and Madhouse are animating Batman: Gotham Knight, a collection of six shorts about the iconic DC Comics detective. All three studios worked with Warner Brothers on another trans-Pacific collection of animated shorts with a Hollywood movie tie-in: The Animatrix. Although the Gotham Knight shorts are compatible with storyline of the Batman Begins and The Dark Knight films that Christopher Nolan has been directing for Warner Brothers, they are also standalone stories. The collection is scheduled for the summer of 2008.

Bruce Timm, the acclaimed creator and producer of many of the animated DC Universe projects since 1992, is directing the shorts. Batman comic writers Brian Azzarello and Greg Rucka, A History of Violence film writer Josh Olson, Batman Begins writer David S. Goyer, The Dark Knight producer Jordan Goldberg, and Batman: The Animated Series writer Alan Burnett are each contributing the script for one of the shorts.

This project is not the first time that Japanese artists have interpreted the Dark Knight. The animators of Tokyo Movie Shinsha and Sunrise worked with Timm on portions of Batman: The Animated Series during the 1990s. Manga artist Kia Asamiya has been a longtime fan of Batman, and his Batman renderings have been appearing on magazine covers, collectible figures, and the 2000-2001 Batman: The Child of Dreams series. Famed manga artist and director Katsuhiro Otomo created "The Third Mask" short story in DC Comics' Batman: Black & White #4 in 1996."

>what about this movie looks corny? i would like to know.

'Batman Begins' was splendid.

Splendid.

Splendid.

The reasons why we loved it so much, were, however,
very contextual:

a) It was a real origin story. Never been done in a
super hero movie, at least recently. It was done and
done well.

b)It came AFTER BATMAN AND ROBIN and so our expectations
had dropped to an all-time low. We didn't expect shit.
The fact that it was well made and "dark" made it particularly
intriguing.

The sad truth is that the actual Batman-villain
interactions in 'Batman Begins' were actually kind of
corny, and the first half of the movie was substantially
better than the second half of the movie. Cry if you want
to, but that is true. Nobody cared about the nigga wearing
the mask, or any of that dumbass shit. No one cared about
Katie Holmes fighting drug kingpins. We all but dozed off
in those scenes because her character sucked and her conflict
was cliche and unnecessary to even make that film good.

So what did we like?

We liked to see Bruce in Tibet, whooping ass, doing the
god body knowledge, learning the ropes. That is what
made that movie great.

Liam Neeson made that movie. Not his evil-ness. But
his philosophy. The organic-nature of his interactions
with Bruce early on.

We like Alfred.

We liked Detective Gordon.

We liked seeing how Gotham took to Batman.

Now that the whole origin novelty has worn off, we just
have another superhero movie that is "Dark."

Ummm...okay.

It'll be aight.

But not that good.

It'll be about as good as the 2nd half of
'Begins' which is a solid 'B' movie at best.

There will prolly be some cornball shit up
in there though.

I think that BB was MOSTLY about why and how
Batman did what he did.

Spiderman had that in it, but had real bad guy
villain interactions more substantive than BB.

Interesting. I turned BB off 1/2way through. Heath Ledger is the IT for TDK.

Judging by the trailer of TDK, there’s nothing seemingly corny about TDK (as far was we can tell).

Scarecrow will get captured and put back in Arkham Asylum
Harvey Dent won't turn into Two Face in this movie
Joker will seem to have died in some tragic disaster however a clue lets you know that he's still alive (classic villain turnout)
Michael Jai White's (Gamble) will only be a cameo role with a slight fight scene here or there
There will be no Riddler....
There will be no Harley Quinn....
The charactor known as Crock/Gator will only be a cameo....
There will be no Barbara Gordon; however Gordon will have a son
Lucius Fox will have a moderately intriguing role because of Morgan Freeman.....
If anyone actually dies in this film, it will be Rachel Daws, her character is too disposable....
The Batmobile gets totalled by some strange turn of events......

On The Lookout 4:
some new music. WTF is going on this year?

Joker will fall into a vat of chemicals that fucks him up and explains why he'll look different if we ever see him in another batman movie now that the actor that originally portrayed the character has died.

I hope hope *hope* they shot something like that.

>Scarecrow will get captured and put back in Arkham Asylum
>Harvey Dent won't turn into Two Face in this movie
>Joker will seem to have died in some tragic disaster however a
>clue lets you know that he's still alive (classic villain
>turnout)
>Michael Jai White's (Gamble) will only be a cameo role with a
>slight fight scene here or there
>There will be no Riddler....
>There will be no Harley Quinn....
>The charactor known as Crock/Gator will only be a cameo....
>There will be no Barbara Gordon; however Gordon will have a
>son
>Lucius Fox will have a moderately intriguing role because of
>Morgan Freeman.....
>If anyone actually dies in this film, it will be Rachel Daws,
>her character is too disposable....
>The Batmobile gets totalled by some strange turn of
>events......

I have no pride on dumb shit like movie opinions.

I'm saying I'm not expecting it to be a classic

I believe the story centers around Harvy Dent too, it's just The Joker is in the middle of the battle. I remember Nolan mention this in a interview, "Two Face" might not be in it.

but all in all, we really don't know if the toys are true.

Batman’s Burden: A Director Confronts Darkness and Death

A DREARY office plaza at Wabash Street and the river, late afternoon. A mist blows in from Lake Michigan. Producers and idle actors huddle under a flimsy canopy; grips hastily unfold another over their high-priced gear. A few stories overhead, a stunt double in a familiar black-caped costume swings from a hoist, slamming into a window in a Mies van der Rohe tower that we shall imagine is Gotham City Hall. A noose is around his neck, a knife plunged into his heart.

The meaning is clear: Batman, or at least his döppelganger, is dead.

Christopher Nolan, the director of “The Dark Knight” — the follow-up to his 2005 franchise reboot, “Batman Begins” — is unperturbed by the rain, but a tiny detail irks him. “Hey, buster!” he shouts to the stuntman, craning his neck skyward and raising his voice for the first time all day (politely, as ever, but enough so he can be heard). “Could you turn yourself a little more to the left?”

In so many ways this isn’t what you’d expect of a $180 million Hollywood comic-book movie sequel with a zillion moving parts, a cast of thousands and sets from here to Hong Kong. Anyone else would shoot indoors, use digital effects or wait for clear skies; Mr. Nolan rolls with the weather’s punches, believing that the messiness of reality can’t be faked. Another filmmaker would leave a shot like this in the hands of a second-unit director, but Mr. Nolan doesn’t use one; if it’s on the screen, he directed it, and his longtime cinematographer, Wally Pfister, worked the camera. Stars on any other movie would have fled to their trailers to wait in comfort until needed again. Here, Gary Oldman is watching and shivering along with everybody else, cracking jokes to keep warm.

Yet Mr. Nolan, 37, has barely changed his approach to filmmaking since his 2000 indie-smash “Memento,” the film noir in reverse starring Guy Pearce that Mr. Nolan’s brother, Jonathan, dreamed up, and Christopher Nolan made for $5 million. “A movie is a movie,” he says. So he’s still scribbling new dialogue on the set, improvising camera moves as he goes, letting his actors decide when it’s time to move on and otherwise racing through each day as if his money might run out. It’s just that his jazz combo of a crew has mushroomed into a philharmonic — with whole new sections of prosthetics artists, special-effects wizards and so on. “But we’re still all riffing off of him,” Mr. Pfister says.

That kind of maestro is just what Warner Brothers wanted five years ago when it hired Mr. Nolan to restore a jewel of a property that had become a laughingstock with Joel Schumacher’s 1997 reviled “Batman and Robin,” best remembered for George Clooney’s nipple suit.

But any risks inherent in giving over such a huge franchise, with so much history and potential, to an auteur untested at making blockbusters were outweighed by the need to re-establish credibility with Batman’s alienated fan base. “If the people who make the film aren’t taking it seriously,” Mr. Nolan said, summarizing fans’ view of the 1997 movie, “why should we?”

Now the question is whether Mr. Nolan’s vision of Batman can not only maintain its hold on the imaginations of comic fans and critics, but expand its reach to a wider summer moviegoing audience, even as the death of Heath Ledger, who played the Joker in “The Dark Knight,” has added unanticipated morbidity to the film’s deliberate darkness.

But if Mr. Nolan was feeling any stress on the set in Chicago last year, his easygoing reserve concealed it. Dressed, as always, in his own somewhat formal uniform — dark blazer, waistcoat, French cuffs; a thermos of tea in hand; a wireless video monitor around his neck — he also seemed a bit of a throwback. While many filmmakers watch in seclusion on television screens, he stood next to the camera, always on his feet unless he was kneeling to whisper in someone’s ear. “Acting is such a vulnerable thing, you don’t want to be told in front of others that you’ve made a mistake, or ‘Try this,’ ” said Aaron Eckhart, who plays Harvey Dent, a district attorney. “Chris understands that.”

But then, it hasn’t been so long since Mr. Nolan bootstrapped himself into the film business, cobbling together bits of 16-millimeter film stock with $6,000 to make his first feature, “Following” (1998), over a year’s worth of weekends. “Memento,” which came next, was a critical smash, and with Steven Soderbergh’s endorsement, he landed his first studio assignment: directing Al Pacino and Hilary Swank in “Insomnia” (2002) on a $50 million budget.

That fall, after slaving over a screenplay about Howard Hughes only to have Martin Scorsese beat him to the punch, Mr. Nolan put together a passionate 45-minute pitch for rewinding the Batman saga to its beginning. Alan Horn, Warner’s president, approved it on the spot. “Besides his excitement about the story he wanted to tell, he just brings a certain weight and credibility,” said Jeff Robinov, the studio’s No. 2 executive, who had first tried to interest Mr. Nolan in “Troy.”

Three times the cost of “Insomnia” and far greater in scope, “Batman Begins” catapulted Mr. Nolan into the top tier of mainstream filmmakers. Critics mostly loved it, though some seemed to resent him for leaving the indie world behind. While not an overpowering blockbuster, with $205 million in domestic box office, it expanded the audience for Batman well beyond comic fans. And it gave Warner Brothers a superhero who could hold his head up next to Sony’s Spider-Man and Fox’s X-Men.

His Caped Crusader, Christian Bale (who also starred in Mr. Nolan’s entr’acte between the Batman films, “The Prestige”), recalls how “people would kind of laugh” when they heard that he and Mr. Nolan were taking Batman seriously. But when they finally saw the film, the same people “would say, ‘What a surprise,’ “ Mr. Bale said. “I believe that even the most popcornlike movie can be done incredibly well, and can have something that you really have to work at. That was what attracted me to doing it the first time, because I felt I’d never seen that done, and I didn’t understand why.”

It’s enough to make a marketing executive cringe, that the word “dense” pops up in conversations with Mr. Nolan and his actors. But it’s true: “The Dark Knight,” which will be released on July 18, is jammed with characters, plot and action. It picks up where “Batman Begins” left off, with Mr. Oldman’s police lieutenant, Jim Gordon, warning about the perils of escalation: that Batman’s extreme measures could invite a like response from the criminal element. And sure enough, a deadly new villain, the Joker, emerges to wreak havoc.

In a political context this would politely be called an “unintended consequence.” (Gotham as Baghdad, anyone?) Mr. Nolan doesn’t deny the overtones. “As we looked through the comics, there was this fascinating idea that Batman’s presence in Gotham actually attracts criminals to Gotham, attracts lunacy,” he said. “When you’re dealing with questionable notions like people taking the law into their own hands, you have to really ask, where does that lead? That’s what makes the character so dark, because he expresses a vengeful desire.”

In Mr. Bale’s view “The Dark Knight” is an even lonelier outing for his character, who once naïvely thought his crime fighting could be a finite endeavor. “This escalation has now meant that he feels more of a duty to continue,” he said. “And now you have not just a young man in pain attempting to find some kind of an answer, you have somebody who actually has power, who is burdened by that power, and is having to recognize the difference between attaining that power and holding on to it.”

It may not be too much of a stretch to see another analogy here for Mr. Nolan: Rebooting the Batman franchise may be behind him, but he still has to improve upon it. Sequels are always trickier. And now he must also navigate the aftermath of the Jan. 22 death of Mr. Ledger.

It came well into editing, and only after the studio had introduced Mr. Ledger’s Joker through posters, trailers and a six-minute Imax short. But it automatically raised the stakes: the acclaimed actor’s final role would be ... a comic-book grotesque? Worse, though Mr. Ledger had finished work on “The Dark Knight” in October and was already halfway through another film, news that the prescription drugs that killed him included sleep aids — along with narcotics — prompted Internet chatter about whether his intense performance as the Joker, styled after Malcolm McDowell’s in “A Clockwork Orange,” had been a factor in his demise.

Mr. Ledger, however, also called it “the most fun I’ve ever had, or probably ever will have, playing a character.” But his fatigue was obvious, said Michael Caine, who briefly overlapped with him. “He was exhausted, I mean he was really tired. I remember saying to him, ‘I’m too old to have the bloody energy to play that part.’ And I thought to myself, I didn’t have the energy when I was his age.”

Mr. Pfister, the cinematographer, said Mr. Ledger seemed “like he was busting blood vessels in his head,” he was so intense. “It was like a séance, where the medium takes on another person and then is so completely drained.”

Will Mr. Ledger’s death cast a pall over “The Dark Knight,” whose tragic plot turns already make it much darker than “Batman Begins”? “We’ll see,” said Mr. Robinov, of Warner Brothers. Mr. Nolan, for his part, said he felt a “massive sense of responsibility” to do right by Mr. Ledger’s “terrifying, amazing” performance.

“It’s stunning, it’s iconic,” he said. “It’s going to just blow people away.”

All the talk of darkness obscures what may come as an aesthetic surprise in “The Dark Knight”: the creepy shadows and gothic Wayne Manor are gone, replaced by sleek towers, shiny surfaces, bright lighting and the vistas of a city with shoulders bigger than Batman’s. “I’ve tried to unclutter the Gotham we created on the last film,” said Nathan Crowley, Mr. Nolan’s production designer. “Gotham is in chaos. We keep blowing up stuff. So we can keep our images clean,” setting a solitary hero against the vastness of Chicago.

Mr. Nolan said he tried to make “Batman Begins” realistic by taking Wayne out of Gotham for portions of the story. For “The Dark Knight” he wanted Gotham to seem straight out of the news. “We just let everyone know up front: this is a location movie,” he said.

Mr. Nolan does his planning in his own tricked-out lair: a converted garage behind his home near the Hollywood hills (and just down the street from the Batcave entrance in the campy 1960s television series). There he and his producer-wife, Emma Thomas — who gave birth to their fourth child last September — gathered with Mr. Crowley, Mr. Pfister, the costume designer Lindy Hemming and other department heads to brainstorm. It’s where Mr. Crowley designed the tanklike Batmobile known as “the Tumbler,” where Ms. Hemming came up with a uniform that finally let Mr. Bale turn his head at the neck and where she first pitched the idea of the Joker as Johnny Rotten.

If he barely uses storyboards, let alone the computer-animated “previsualization” wizardry common to effects-heavy films, Mr. Nolan is on the cutting edge with one technology. He used the unwieldy Imax cameras to shoot about 30 minutes of “The Dark Knight,” including the entire opening.

“We’ve been trying to talk filmmakers into doing this for nearly 40 years,” said David Keighley, an old Imax hand. And even after a Steadicam collapsed under the weight of an Imax camera, Mr. Nolan held firm. “If David Lean could carry a 65-millimeter camera through the desert,” he said, “why shouldn’t we be able to do this?”

“It scares people a bit,” Mr. Nolan says of what could be called his planned-out impulsiveness. “We just go and shoot the stuff, and see what looks the best and what works. But on a big movie, you actually have more freedom. You can say, ‘O.K., it’s 3 in the morning — can we get the police to close down that street?’ ”

I was really excited to see it before it came out but didnt bother to see it on the big screen after the bad word of mouth. After I saw it on DVD I didn't regret that decision 1 bit. There's a few cool scenes here & there but overall it really doesnt do that story justice & that's 1 of my favorite greek myths.

A little spoilery but it's stuff most of us have figured out from the trailers.

<Gary Oldman is so skilled that he makes virtue exciting as Jim Gordon, the ultimate good cop and as such a prime target for the Joker.

<Eckhart earns major props for scarily and movingly portraying the DA's transformation into the dreaded Harvey Two-Face, an event sparked by the brutal murder of a major character.

Does this mean that Gordon's daughter will die?

key word being "major" character. Im thinking Rachel. That would push Harvey & Bruce over the edge.

Leahy to host early showing of Batman movie in Vermont
By Lisa Rathke
Associated Press Writer / June 24, 2008

MONTPELIER, Vt.—Holy cameo, Batman!

U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy's hometown will get an advance peak at the newest Batman movie, "The Dark Knight," in which he has a part.

Leahy, a lifelong fan of the caped crusader, will host a $50-a-ticket screening July 12 -- six days before the movie is released -- to benefit Montpelier's Kellogg-Hubbard Library.

"I found that children's library a very, very important part of my life when I was growing up," said Leahy, who started reading at 4 and got his first Batman comic book a year or two later.

Leahy, D-Vt., and Warner Bros. Chairman and CEO Barry Meyer will introduce the movie, which will be shown on two screens at Capitol Theatre. The 350 tickets will sell for $50.

"We think this is pretty exciting for the area," said Daniel Pudvah, executive director of the library, which plans to start selling tickets Friday. "It's nice for Vermont, and it's nice for Montpelier."

Before the screening, Leahy will host a separate $50-a-ticket benefit for 200 people featuring Meyer, to be held at the Capital Plaza Hotel, across the street from the theater.

Leahy, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, won't say much about his role in "The Dark Knight," which features Christian Bale as Batman, the late Heath Ledger as the Joker and Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth. But proceeds from his cameo will benefit the library.

It's not his first hand in a "Batman" production. Leahy has done voice-overs on "Batman" cartoons, written the preface for a "Batman" book and had small roles in the last two "Batman" movies.

Why, Batman?

"He doesn't have any super powers," said Leahy Tuesday. "He has to use his own wits, his prowess, but mostly his own intellect."

From Sam Rubin's blog at ktla.com. Sam is the entertainment reporter here in Los Angeles at KTLA, and yes, he knows what he's talking about:

>Urgent from Sam -- Heath Ledger in 'The Dark Knight.'
10:27 PM June 26, 2008

I just returned from a screening and I wanted to commit this to a public forum as quickly as possible. Heath Ledger gives a blockbuster performance in the new Batman movie. His work, as The Joker, will absolutely be nominated for an Oscar, and at this point in the year, Ledger is also a hands-down favorite to win it posthumously. Ledger offers perfect pitch, perfect tone, his Joker hits all the right notes. 'The Dark Knight' is among the better super-hero movies of all time, and Ledger is THE BEST villain in a super hero movie of all time. Really. It will only add to the conversation of all that Ledger could have accomplished had he lived. Amazing work.

In response to Reply # 0

http://chud.com/articles/articles/15353/1/THE-DEVIN039S-ADVOCATE-HOLY-HYPERBOLE-BATMAN/Page1.html

Last night was the first junket screening for The Dark Knight, taking place on an IMAX screen in Los Angeles. The screening was at 7, but the theater was packed at 6, unheard of at press screenings. The house was so full by 6:45 that the movie started fifteen minutes EARLY, something I never thought I'd see (press screenings invariable start ten minutes late). Now the people who were at the screening, while still under an official embargo, have begun talking about what they thought of the film, and the only word that comes to mind is 'hyperbole.'

You're probably wondering what I thought of the film. While my official review won't run until the week of the movie's release, I'll tell you that I liked it. It's better than Batman Begins in every way. It's an epic crime film filled with interesting characters (none of them played by Christian Bale, sadly). It's filled with action and excitement. It's also fat - at least thirty minutes could have easily been excised in the script stage, and twenty could be trimmed now in the editing room without blinking an eye - and has a number of odd story problems. Christopher Nolan still can't direct an action scene.

These aren't major complaints, but when I see someone, like my friend Steve at Collider, call the film 'flawless' and 'a masterpiece,' I know we're in for a tough couple of weeks. The movement to give Heath Ledger his posthumous Oscar, which was starting up from about the second he died in January, will pick up so much steam that I think he's almost guaranteed a nomination based on the hype and nothing else. Between now and the film's release I think the hype over this film could build to a deafening crescendo, one that will result in an inevitable backlash when the movie finally screens for the non-junket press in about two weeks. And that backlash could easily hit the fanbase as well - when The Dark Knight fails to actually change their lives, will the hardcore fans feel a touch disappointed?

For the record, Heath Ledger gives a tremendous performance as the Joker. He makes the character his own, and I think he delivers a Joker so definitive it's going to change the way he's written in the comics and will become the touchstone version of the character. I also think that if he was alive fanboys would be the only people talking about giving him an Oscar. Dying is often the best thing that you can do for your career (just ask Elvis), and Ledger picked a good role to die on, one where he really gets to have some fun and make some interesting choices. The Joker is nowhere near the character that Ennis Del Mar is, but Ledger brings a similar sort of fascinating internal quality to the role. If Ledger gets a nomination it surely wouldn't be the most egregious postmortem nod ever, but it will still be one based more on what happened outside the film than what he did inside of it.

What's important to keep in mind over the coming days as you see more and more reactions to the current round of screenings is that there is no group less reliable than the LA junket press. These people live for the ability to name drop and for their free swag, and they get more excited about seeing the film first than about seeing a good film (imagine a whole community of Harry Knowles types and you'd probably have it). It's a good movie, and many of these people want to be out the gate first saying how much they liked it.

On the other hand, a friend of mine who writes for the web and who I think is not only a terrific critic but also has tremendous taste in films has compared it to Empire Strikes Back and The Godfather Part II. I can't even begin to agree, but I respect his position on the film, and I don't think he's coming from the same fatuous place that most of the junket press does.

I'm thinking about writing my review right now and banking it, to be honest. I like to wait a while to write a review, to let a film simmer in my head for a couple of days or a week or two, but the level of hyperbole that I'm seeing begin right now is only going to get worse and worse over the next few days and may peak for me personally at the junket on Sunday. I fear that being annoyed at over-the-top praise of a good film might hurt my opinion of the film in general (I'm only human, and if I spend all day Sunday explaining to people why this film is far from flawless, I know my mind will begin fixating on these problems in the story). I'm sort of keenly aware of my reputation as the anti-Batman guy (and I honestly don't like the character all that much), and I walked into this movie with an open mind, intending to give it a fair shake. I want to make sure my review reflects that fair shake and not the growing Browncoat aspects of the people who came into that IMAX theater in wheelchairs last night and left on their own two feet.

that is, he is trying to maintain a grounded, balanced perspective- except it seems like it is much more a reaction to the accolades that are already piling on rather then his true thoughts.

i get the feeling that were the overall reaction a ho hum, "good but not great" attitude... he would tout how great it was and ow everyone else is missing the finer points.

there was a serious buzz about ledgers performance before he died. people were already saying it was a potential oscar performance. not en masse like it is now, but then, there was less to go on at the time.

at any rate chances are most of us are gonna mark the fuck out over this shit. most of us are gonna love it. it's probably gonna kick Ironmans ass.

my guess is the hyperbole is at least 75% warranted. a few minor faults won't be enough to turn it into a "good movie".

i am betting it's gonna be an "experience" level movie.

I hope it's the greatest superhero movie of all time, just to shut his cynical-- er, I mean, "rational"-assed face...

Also, he can FOH with his arrogance... (WARNING: strawman alert) "I just might write my review now, because I need to save the 'fanboys*' from the tide of fat critics overpraising this film..." (and besides, he's too late, Rubin's a fat critic, and he has already weighed in)

I'm not trying to be Mr. Batman here, but as usual, Devin's full of shit by trying too hard to be... whatever he's trying to be (and "objective" isn't the first word that comes to mind)

*and can the people in the press put a long-needed moratorium on this fuckin' word? Please?

But I agree with him that Nolan can't direct action very well and that Begins had a lot of problems outside of the great performances.

I also agree that if Ledger hadn't died nobody would be talking about awards. Alfred Molina was fucking awesome in Spider-Man 2 but awards were never brought up.

Black Mask, seems the most probable since he becomes the crimelord of Gotham for a short duration in the comics...

Killer Croc, maybe???..never might happen but would be dope...

Catwoman and Penguin???... I'm guessing Charlise Theron/Ali Larter/ Rose McGowan/Sienna Miller/Elisa Cuthbert/Jamie King for Selena Kyle and Phillip Seymour Hoffman/ Seth Rogen as Penguin...

Poison Ivy, seems probable if their doing a Two-Face tie in movie, probably some unknown for this role...

On The Lookout 4:

I said it before, and I'll say it again, Michael Emerson as the Riddler.

I mean, watching Lost and how he puzzles me with his eyes, I would love to see him being the Riddler. Imagine him wearing the suit, not the Riddler of the Adam West Batman or Carey's Riddler, I want the Riddler to daunt the Batman: The Animated Series Suit but not too green.

The Dark Knight Review

Nolan's sequel surpasses the original with an intense, disturbing masterpiece.

by Todd Gilchrist

June 30, 2008 - It isn't an overstatement to call The Dark Knight the most sophisticated and ambitious work of its kind. Superior to all three Spider-Man installments and even its amazing predecessor in terms of conceptualization, writing, acting, and direction, Nolan's follow-up to Batman Begins is a dark, complex and disturbing film, not the least of which because it grafts its heroics onto the blueprint of actual reality rather than that of spandex-clad supermen. And while such a distinction may make little difference to those already eagerly anticipating the return of the caped crusader, suffice it to say that The Dark Knight qualifies as the first official comic book adaptation that truly succeeds in being a great artistic achievement in its own right.

Christian Bale returns as Bruce Wayne, the billionaire playboy who moonlights as Batman. Having eased more comfortably into a lifestyle of excess, Wayne lurks on the fringes of his family's corporation as CEO Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman) runs the boardroom. But when an ambitious district attorney named Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) comes forward to challenge Gotham City's villainy through proper legal channels, the man also known as Batman sees an opportunity to replace his vigilante persona with a figure of virtue who will truly inspire the best in the citizenry.

Unfortunately, Batman's success as a crime fighter has generated new problems for Gotham, including a consolidation of the crime lords who once controlled the city independently. Meanwhile, a new adversary named The Joker (Heath Ledger) proves particularly dangerous because he seeks not only to advance the cause of Gotham's underworld, but obliterate the foundations of liberty and order that Batman protects. Torn between championing Dent and meting out justice as a masked vigilante, Wayne soon finds himself at a crossroads between being the hero that Gotham needs and the one it deserves.

The great triumph of The Dark Knight is that it manages for the first time ever in the history of the genre to transplant comic book theatrics into the real world – and moreover, to examine precisely what it could mean if a person decided to strap on a super-suit and start attacking the world's criminals. The first film certainly hinted at this possibility, thrusting the hero and his alter-ego into a world where Wayne's frivolity was as despised as Batman's vigilantism. But even with real-world explanations for such improbabilities as Scarecrow's ability to scare, this was still a world where the Batmobile was cool and the climactic battle took place on a speeding train as a bomb ticked toward its inevitable explosion. Here, the Prowler barely survives its first appearance and with the exception of one or two cooler-than-cool moves that will no doubt thrill fans, its replacement/substitute – the Batpod – serves as a largely utilitarian device for Batman to get from one crime scene to the next. (That said, I still want one.)

More important than this, however, is the idea that Batman is not just a guy in a suit, but a symbol and there are people in the film – most notably The Joker – who want to destroy that symbol. While Batman's identity remains secret and his motives unknown to Gothamites, he represents hope in a city that has little to spare and embodies a pursuit of justice – and further, a code of behavior – that quite literally threatens these criminals' way of life. By throwing Gotham into chaos and testing the limits to which Batman holds himself, The Joker is not merely plying death and destruction but willfully destroying the philosophical foundations of organized society. The closest such examination another comic book-oriented film has ever attempted was the emotional throughline of the Spider-Man films. Peter Parker's struggle was almost exclusively personal, whereas Wayne not only has to find a way to maintain his moral compass, but consider what the repercussions of his heroism are to both the public and the criminals themselves.

While all of this sounds lofty – and it is – Nolan examines these themes in beautifully human terms, projecting his examination of "the hero" into the hearts and minds of his characters. Wayne, less outwardly conflicted than in Batman Begins, sees Dent's ascension as an opportunity to stop playing dress up and reunite with Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal) – the one woman who knows his secret. Meanwhile, Dent and his sometimes partner Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) look at Batman's existence as a good thing, a fulcrum against which they can enforce the law and sometimes bend rules to accomplish loftier goals. And, of course, The Joker wants to destroy all of that, albeit less because of some law of movie villainy than because he sees his existence as the necessary antithesis – or perhaps ultimate extension – of the murky morality of Batman's brand of justice. When, after all, was the last time a movie criminal wasn't merely mad, but had a deeper ideological motivation for his dastardly deeds?

Perhaps bolstered by the success of the first film, Nolan reaches out further with his storytelling and camerawork in The Dark Knight to create an ongoing, palpable feeling of tension that never relents through the entirety of the film's two and a half hour running time. There is a hugeness to the narrative itself, which Nolan enhances first by shooting partially on IMAX film stock (which will surely be lost to those unlucky enough to be too far to see the film in the format), but he then builds this haunting atmosphere steadily from one scene to the next, building anticipation for the moments when the violence will finally erupt.

That he occasionally veers into comic book glibness with one-liners undermines none of the intensity; on the contrary, these moments provide a release that is absolutely necessary to keeping the audience from succumbing to The Joker's febrile madness. Meanwhile, the violence is quite possibly the most intense I have ever seen in a PG-13 film, leaving myself and others wondering how The Dark Knight avoided an R. But what is more disturbing is the unrelenting menace that hovers over every scene like a dark cloud. Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard's leitmotif for The Joker sounds like a cross between Ligeti's "Lux Aeterna" (from 2001) and the scraping, metallic curlicue that was used in trailers for The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and enhances the clenched-fist feeling that anything can and will happen at any moment, even scenes in which he doesn't appear.

Like few other mythology-based movies, The Dark Knight truly seems to think of everything, be it conceptual or purely logical. Credit Nolan and his brother Jonathan (who also helped conceive The Prestige) for really digging into Batman's world, turning over the soil and examining its roots for possible deficiencies. While this generally speaks to the film's plausibility, they also have the presence of mind to consider such things as Lucius Fox's considerable monetary expenditures – not to mention his entire division – and how and where a paper trail might eventually lead to it. Again, however, these are not ideas or even subplots to which vast amounts of screen time are devoted, but simply revealed, explained and dealt with as they might arise in real life.

Bale is predictably effective as both Wayne and Batman this time around, playing both with greater assurance than in Batman Begins (indeed, he and his characters seem to possess more confidence). Though Wayne is a necessary second-fiddle to Batman, he is a better defined and more poised character in this film – even when he's indulging the excesses of his trust fund – and he understands the value of being in a position to help someone like Dent, be it monetarily as himself or physically as Batman. Also great is the rest of the original cast, all of whom seem as comfortable in their characters as if they'd created them themselves. Oldman in particular creates a portrait of virtue that shows a roiling well of doubt underneath, and yet always conveys effortless authority.

Meanwhile taking over for Katie Holmes, Gyllenhaal adds real depth and energy to Rachel Dawes, showing how her feelings for Bruce Wayne aren't simply unrequited, but actually based in both sincere affection and common sense. And Eckhart more or less combines all of the disparate roles he's played in the past – lout, huckster, loyal companion – into one seamless portrayal of a man determined to make things better but not quite sure how to accomplish that goal in the right way.

Finally, there's Ledger, whose performance I suspect will be the subject of many analyses of all sorts in the weeks and months to come. What he does with The Joker is, quite frankly, nothing short of transcendent. Early in the film he explains the origins of his trademark facial scars, and you worry for a moment that the filmmakers are giving this psychopath some kind of convenient explanation, which, talented though he was, Ledger won't be able to overcome. But by the third time he's explained where they come from – each time telling a different tale – you realize that Ledger was a master of his craft, only in his final years finding roles that truly offered him the chance to explore that mastery. His is the definitive movie Joker, and he owns the role and achieves a level of abject insanity that is terrifying as it is irresistible.

Overall, the film does maintain a steady pace and function with such continuously unnerving momentum that it occasionally seems like a second installment. (There are plenty of appropriate comparisons to other sequels its quality mirrors, if not possibly surpasses: Toy Story 2, The Empire Strikes Back, The Godfather Part II, etc.) In fact, so well-executed is this film that even the title – or at least its true meaning – seemed to catch its audience off guard, until it gets explained, expertly and poetically, at the very end of the movie.

A screenwriting professor of mine once said that what happens in a story must be surprising but expected, and Nolan's approach to The Dark Knight epitomizes this maxim. He gives you exactly what you want, but does it so well that it manages to completely catch you off guard when it happens. But there really is no better way to describe The Dark Knight than to call it a great work of art because it transcends both the boundaries of comic book moviemaking and even the parameters of good filmmaking. What Nolan and Co. have created doesn't just function as a thrill ride or even a terrific movie, but rather as a substantive and philosophical examination of why we need heroes, and then when we need them, what they mean.

The Dark Knight: The CBR Review
by Erik Amaya, Contributing Writer

Sun, June 29th, 2008 at 8:06AM PST
Updated: Sun, June 29th, 2008 at 7:31PM PST

All the things you never thought you would see in a Batman film are present in "The Dark Knight." Christopher Nolan's dark, disturbing sequel to 2006's "Batman Begins" pulls off an impossible task: making an epic from a movie with a man in tights. The film also reveals to a mass audience what fans of the characters have known for years - the Joker is nothing to laugh at.

Heath Ledger's final role brings to the screen the Joker that lurked in all comics readers nightmares. In "The Dark Knight," we are given a Joker that is truly dangerous. Just how does Ledger pull it off? Is it that voice? We've never heard him or Joker talk in such a manic, unhinged, and truthful way. Is it that gait? True to the brutal force of nature he is portraying, Ledger even defies the basic form of walking. Is it that his pretty face from teen movies has completely vanished without the aid of expensive prosthetics? Sure, he has scars applied, but most of that face is his, contorted into a primal visage of pure madness. In this portrayal, we are not given the Clown Prince of Crime, or a slick mobster. Instead, we see the raw, arbitrary force of disorder.

Attempting to pull Gotham back from that disorder are our three principle protagonists (there is a reason not to refer to them as "heroes."). In Christian Bale's Batman, we do not see warring identities; at long last, the rumination on dualism is put behind us. Instead, Bale's Batman considers his role and the consequences of his existence. This is made clear when he first meets Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart). In the new District Attorney he sees a man who can operate in the light of day and go where Batman cannot. Eckhart's Dent is a tragic soul - we all know his fate, but the film, and his performance, makes us wish Dent would not meet his destiny.

Gary Oldman's James Gordon has, perhaps, the most surprising journey in the film. The only ordinary man in the whole lot, he is pulled into the trajectory of epic forces and must deal with them as only one good cop could. For his efforts, he becomes Commissioner. He also sees his city turned upside down and the true danger that lurks within it.

Morgan Freeman continues to delight as Lucius Fox, re-imagined in this series as Batman's "Q." The back and forth continues between Fox and Batman. The interplay between the two actors is dynamic and a small ray of light in the otherwise dark and twisted story. Fox's unstated acceptance of his employer's choice to be Batman, however, is brought into play for this film as the technology Fox designed becomes perverted by the Dark Knight into a dreadful tool.

The only character seemingly untouched by the darkness is Rachel Dawes, a character brought to life almost effortlessly by Maggie Gyllenhaal. In some ways, the Dawes character is the most thankless role; the forced-in love interest. In this film, however, her character is given something to chew on and Gyllenhaal makes you care enough about the character that her relevance to the film pays off.

Christopher Nolan never meant to be a director of titanic tent-pole films, but he delivers them with grace, confidence, and power. The fights are true to Batman and the chase scenes are electric. If "The Dark Knight" were simply an action film, it would be one of the best. However, what makes the film truly amazing is how it grows beyond its basic remit as a summer action film. The story, guided by the Joker's antics, reveals a dark rumination on the Western World in the twenty-first century. It suggests the line between upstanding citizen and a homicidal clown is not very well defined. The film has a sense of relevance in a way no other superhero movie can claim to suggest. This is a truly amazing feat for any film, never mind one which features an actual building exploding.

That explosion, like most of the stunts and effects in the film, is genuine - it actually occurred for a camera and wasn't created in a computer. Eschewing the trend toward more outlandish uses of green-screen and CGI, Nolan achieved most of his film in camera. A shot of Batman jumping off a Hong Kong high rise is real. That shot of a big rig truck flipping over really happened. The only computer effects to be seen in the film are used to aid in the realization of Two-Face. Even then, the technology is used in such a subtle way, it gives Harvey's fractured soul a reality it has never seen on screen before. These choices gives the film an authenticity few action films can offer these days. It is that verisimilitude that makes so much of the film so terrifying.

Make no mistake; "The Dark Knight" is frightening. Tension ramps up. Blood is spilled. Every body that drops has weight. Every shout is as unsettling as an explosion. As soon as the Joker begins his stage show of terror, you will expect every window and every quiet moment to explode into anarchy. This is not the Superfriends. Scooby and Daphne are no where to be found. Even if they were, they would be strung up on the pillars of Gotham City Hall, broken and still bleeding with a note posted to Scoob's intestines saying, "Good one, Shaggy." The vision of humanity the Joker presents will haunt you.

One of the most surprising aspects of the "The Dark Knight" is its third act. Instead of an orgy of models, stunt work, special effects and a doomsday machine, we are presented with multiple hostage situations that are surprising in their emotional tension and weight. Here, there are no trains, no archrivals in stolen battle armor, or a magic clingfilm "S." Instead, the choices characters are presented with are more gripping and satisfying than a fight that overstays its welcome. Oh, but don't worry, there's still plenty of fighting in the films final half-hour.

"The Dark Knight" continues the ethos established in "Batman Begins." By sticking to a "real interpretation" of the material and characters, mainstream audiences see the true spirit comics fans have always known them to contain. Gone are the days of day-glo villainy. Bat-credit cards and ice skates are a dim memory or fever dream. Instead, the serious undertones of those garish and outlandish four-color ideas are laid bare in their darkest, terrifying forms.

First off...I got to see this tonight on an IMAX screen for free. I heart the Producers Guild of America.

Next up - this movie is fantastic. It's basically everything you guys are hoping for, and possibly more. To shoot down any concerns - the 2 villain angle is handled far, far better than any film that's tried it prior. In fact (and this could be considered a spoiler but it shouldn't surprise anyone who knows anything about Batman) - Nolan did a Q & A after the screening and likened the Joker to Jaws; a driving force for the rest of the characters rather than a character with an arc of his own. I couldn't have put it any better.

Heath Ledger doesn't just give a great performance - he truly does steal every scene he's in; so much so that when you see him on screen, you start looking forward to the minutes that lie ahead. Gary Oldman is definitely great in this one as well. Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman do their things and really add quite a bit to Bruce Wayne, as they did in Batman Begins. All in all, the acting is there - even from Maggie Gyllenhall (sorry, I am not a fan).

The action sequences are amazing, and the flick has these serious peaks to it. You aren't quite sure when things are going to wrap up, either. It's 2.5 hours long, and it does feel like it, but it still moves by incredibly quickly with ABSOLUTELY no added fat that could have been trimmed. Every scene is essential. Films that don't do that drive me up the goddamn wall, so that was a huge plus. I definitely recommend seeing this on an IMAX. The city shots are breathtaking.

All in all - this is going to be a tremendous hit, but above everything else, it really is going to please most everyone who sees it. I loved it, and it seemed everyone else in the theater did as well. I'm not going to say it's a masterpiece or anything, but it's a GREAT piece of work.

But I did notice an aspect ratio change...though I thought I was tripping. So I guess the answer is yes if you see it on an IMAX. I'm reasonably sure the opening scene is IMAX.

in the scene seems too real, from what had fell in the background when he looked back to just him "acting" like The Joker. I can't wait to see this next Wednesday!!

in the film than it did on the stills that were posted, lol. At the end of the day they didn't look any better. I liked the movie so much that by the end I was totally cool with it. Hopefully that will happen with The Dark Knight too.

but there's one flaw. The latest one had clown suspects rob a bank, which ties in with the prologue to The Dark Knight, the flaw is that the show stated it was breaking news, but the robbery happen in the day which the show took place at night being a nightly news. Other than that, I think the minor spoiler would be knowing what the movie is about. After watching each episode I have an idea what becomes Two-Face, and that he's going to be murderous vigilante.

I think Aaron Eckhart will be great being Two-Face. I don't know about the whole "Two-Face" CGI feeling, but I think he should get as much props playing Harvey Dent.

i read a while back is that nolan had eckhart perform his lines as two-face in two phases. all of his harvey dent lines and then his evil side after. in other words, each personality will bring a different performance. this is what really interests me. more so than the cgi.

I mean I can see him play the characters very well...but it's just the CGI Two-Face, that's it. Otherwise, I think he's great in both roles. At time I think Ledger's Joker is getting so much shine in this film that we tend to forget the minor roles, especially Harvey Dent/Two-Face character. I think the film will be one glorious film, not just a Comic-book movie.

like bammas were really hype about this year's super bowl
before that maybe graduation,
fools were crazy hype before sin city
get rich or die tryin
I remember everyone was going bonkers before the eminem show dropped

it's the best feeling, it really is. when seemingly everyone you know is talking about the same thing and is just as pumped, and then the day FINALLY arrives and it's like fireworks going off in your head, like busting after not pulling it for a year. and Dark Knight is one of those moments, maybe the biggest one yet in my memory if I can recall. Like the wait has felt EPIC and it's actually arrived, it's here, and everyone I talk to, even casual movie fans and people who haven't ever even read comics are planning their weekend around seeing this. as bad as I want to see it right now, I know that I'm gonna be on my best 2nd grader impression when the movie officially begins after the trailers and the lights go down for good and everyone starts cheering.

midnight thursday can't come soon enough

I believe the flaw of the movie, and probably most of everyone else would be...the running time. I think Nolan can at least chop off 30-45 minutes of it. So much was going on, it went overboard. But then again, THIS IS ONE BADASS FUCKING MOVIE.

I think it's alot better than Begins when it comes to action, but sometime it just felt like the editing was sloppy in some minor parts. Overall, it was great experience. Thank you Mr. Ledger for one of the best Jokers.

Heath ripped it. the greatest performance of his career which also unfortunately claimed his life. Eckhart's turn as Two-Face was also very cool, and i couldn't even tell there was CGI goin on, it looked pretty seamless. glad they went for the gory-as-hell face.

one thing i loved above all is that they did not hold back with the violence, or with Joker's sadistic nature.

(spoiler)

when Bats is on the batpod and headin straight for Joker on the street with the machine gun, Joker starts off by spraying innocent civilians driving in their cars before he even takes a shot at Bats. i LOVED that. the only way to do Joker justice is to let that muthafucker off the leash.
