"Watching Love Jones again..."

None of these new black love movies, EXCEPT perhaps Jason's Lyric (and *cough* Hav Plenty), even come close to it. I mean, the camera work was bomb, the music and the whole scene it was based in were so authentic and fit so well together, the story was great and clever w/o being contrived...and Nia and Larenz had real chemistry together. If Terence Howard had played Hollywood instead of Bill Bellamy, this movie would be perfect. But yeah, it's a true classic love movie.

The character wasn't shit, so why invest in an actor worth something more? Being from The Chi, I could have used a little bit more scenes at the Steppers's Set....

...my boy Sly from the Cosby Show did pretty well in this one, as did Jada and Bokeem Woodbine. This to me was a good spin on the ghetto movies that predominated in the early 90's, and overall I liked the story and how the camera captured the haze that lies over Houston in the summer. Plus you can't beat it for bucknaked love scenes w/o renting a porno.

...I hated the way Allen Payne decided to work his accent. The deal killer was the "I ain't neva seen the sunset befo'" scene.

Yeah the butt nakedness was sweet, and Lisa Nicole Carson's cleavage was beautiful as usual, but the other than me recognizing some hood spots (and one extra I knew) the movie sucked bigtime.

"best man" was aiight, but the story was stupid. women only liked it for the return of morris chestnut as a sexy black man, and dudes only liked it because women liked it. the dialogue was wack, it wasn't shot half as well as "love jones", and didn't that shit star taye diggs? any movie loses points for having taye diggs as a star (except that one where he was a hitman).

you can't put any of those cookie cutter wood/best man flicks in the category with love jones except love & basketball.

i mean, your opinion is your opinion, but what's it based on? sanaa and omar had great on-screen chemistry, and e'rybody loves a happy ending, but here's where "love jones" tops the others: its ending is some romantic movie shit, not some omar tyree/terry mcmillan tie-up-every-loose-end happy-ending shit. it's a real fucking movie w/o weird plot twists or contrived plot lines (a la "let's play....for your heart" or "OOOH! if he finds out what this book is REALLY about!"). and before you say "hav plenty" was contrived: no, the book/movie thing was clever.

i think that love jones was far superior to love and basketball... LJ was more realistic.....the story flowed better, L&B the timing was kinda crazy, it covered too many years... and too many wierd situations.. plus the breakup scene in L&B was wack...

I *hated* the Best Man. Contrived, cliched and boring. I didn't care about the characters--hell, I was rooting for the Terrance Jones(that is his last name, right?) character. He was wicked...and a damn sight funnier than the rest of those cardboard negroes.

love jones...man. Classic shit right there. The camerawork alone was fantastic...very blue, which added to the overall mood. I think my favorite person in the movie was Nia Long's best friend. Lisa Nicole Carson nailed her role (granted, she didn't have that many scenes...but she was still fabulous). I think I saw it twice in the theater and have it on VHS.

...it's also empirically a good movie. Funny and touching, well-shot, and well-written. A good movie. And you shouldn't use that soundtrack for anything but some serious boning -- using it for a mere booty call is wrong.

yadda yadda...nia long and larenz tate smoked like a couple of chimneys the entire film. they glamorized and made the poetry scene in chicago look ultra sexy when it isnt, it's boho'd the fuck out. it's also predictable movie formula. boy meets girl, boy courts girl, boy gets girl, boy gets tired of girl, boy loses girl, boy realizes he fucked up, boy gets girl back...IN THE RAIN NO LESS

the thing about love jones is that it captured so many aspects of black culture..from friends, to homegirls, to jazz, to neo sou, steppin, chitown culture, poetry, writng, clubs, open mics, sex, relationships, true love, marriage, parties, just everything that positive blacks be on. it really let people know the real meaning of being black...everything was realistic and the characters i felt like I knew...especially Shiela, the mutual homegirl, I really could relate to all of the support roles...damn good movie

You wanna know why, yo first of all, yo first of all you can't be askin me no question knowhatI'msayin who the fuck is you? YouknowhatI'msayin? You can't be askin me no questions. I'ma tell you why I'm mad, youknowhatI'msayin? I'ma tell you why I'm mad.

OOPS... I directed this response to the worng person....here it goes in response to Mally's comment

That was a great analysis of the movie Love Jones. I couldn't have put it better myself. I think that LJ is in a different class than the rest of those movies. It also starred two of my favorite actors Larenz Tate and Nia Long. That movie will always be a classic.. no question about it

I love that "conversate is not a word" I thought I was the only one who was bothered by the usage of that word..LOL

And dialogue between the characters was excellent.
With Larenz and Isaiah over the pool table.
Lisa and Nia in the cab. The table discussions were classic too.
Very real emotion, plus like someone else said, it combines so many facets of black culture, music, poetry, dancing, art (photography). It was and will always be very inspiring to me as a creative individual.

On the creative part. This is like the ultimate movie for any aspiring artist (be it visual/written/music), you can fully relate to it. And this was a portion of black audiences that wasn't being served when it came to movies. It was a breath of fresh air that so many people desired, and they received.

That was a great analysis of the movie Love Jones. I couldn't have put it better myself. I think that LJ is in a different class than the rest of those movies. It also starred two of my favorite actors Larenz Tate and Nia Long. That movie will always be a classic.. no question about it

It got me into writing again. I was always into spoken word. I haven't written like that since, but hey.
