"PTP's New Classics: NO REVISIONS ALLOWED, NEW LISTS DUE 10 PM"
Tue Jul-29-08 04:05 PM by Frank Longo

I've already begun to tally, so no one is allowed to revise their own list. Jigga, Wordman, anyone else... you've got 5 hours. Otherwise, wallow in your own disgrace and wretched shame.

By now, you've probably seen Entertainment Weekly's List: http://board.okayplayer.com/okp.php?az=show_topic&forum=6&topic_id=380736&mesg_id=380736&page=

And you've probably disagreed with it.

Well, we at PTP will form our own list. And it will be awesome.

RULES:

1. You must rank the films. With a list of this length, we can't simply count how many times a film is included, there would be too many ties. All lists MUST be ranked.

2. You must list as full a list as possible. Any list with less effort than 50 films will not be counted.

3. What qualifications should you use to vote? Simple-- which films do you think will be classics to you years and years down the line? So, if you think House of Sand and Fog is a "better" film than Borat, but you will remember Borat long after House of Sand and Fog has faded from your memory, put Borat higher. Make sense? It's your personal classics-- not critical favorites, but the films you believe you'll argue are classics until the end of your life.

4. Scoring: I was going to do the film listed first gets 100 points, second gets 99, etc. But since I doubt we get 100 people to vote in this poll, I might just go with #1 gets 11 points, other top 10 films gets 10 points, films 11 through 20 get 9 points, etc. That way, films included on more lists, even if they aren't as high, will have a better shot. If anyone thinks that's a poor way to compile this list, feel free to comment on it. But if only 20 or 30 people vote, giving any film 100 points would more or less guarantee its inclusion fairly high on the final list, so one joker who loves Police Academy 3 more than life could skew our list considerably, lol. So yeah, lemme know if you have a better way to score this shit, nerds.

5. If you want to revise your list, just reply to your original list with a subject line "UPDATED LIST." That'll make it so I accidentally don't count your list twice.

If there are any questions, lemme know either via inbox or in the post. Feel free to comment on other people's individual lists if you'd like-- in fact, reading others' lists might help you remember a film you forgot that you wanted to include.

Here are some fairly comprehensive lists of films if you wanna do some research:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1980s_in_film
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1990s_in_film
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2000s_in_film

Let's try to have our lists done by July... but I might let it run longer than that so more people can vote. But EVERYONE VOTE!

Thanks,
Frank

Aside from being shortened (to just 50), I'm also gonna add in a couple titles that weren't on the list I posted yesterday. With that one, I was trying to play it middle-of-the-road by including some fan-favorite's. I guess this one is (appropriately) more idiosyncratic.

Also, here's a very helpful site as far as breaking down what came out year by year.

>Have you seen Housekeeping? It's excellent.

No, I haven't seen it, and its status as VHS-only probably is a main reason why. But that's the thing about these lists: minutes after you think you've made some final, semi-confident decision about what to include, you find there's a title or two or thirty worth considering that you never even have heard of. I did my first version of a "greatest films list" in the 10th grade, and it was actually pretty well-informed for coming from a 10th grader. However, in hindsight, it's absurd to the point of funny just how little I knew / had seen. But even similar lists that I may have made a couple years ago or even earlier this year also now seem outdated and out of touch, because, again, "new" titles have presented themselves and preceded to amaze me: The Cruise, Morvern Callar, etc. I guess finding great movies is a slow discovery and not something anyone should presume to be able to cram into one night.

Yup, it's just a record of what one likes at the moment of posting. Nothing more.

The Cruise sounds great. Will check that out.

Ramsay and Morton are fuckin' talented.

Is Weekend still your #1 all-time flick? I think I listed Bicyle Thieves in my top 5 in an old post, and back then I thought it was written in stone. Today, I don't think it'll make top 10.

The age of DVDs is an exciting time. I hope I live a long time so I can catch up.

In response to Reply # 13

I recommend that short films be eligible.

Also, since festivals and organizations specify what is a feature-length, maybe PTP ought to. I think, some say, 60+ minutes. I've seen it as low as 45+ minutes. I hope this is moot 'cause I want shorts listed.

Keeping in mind that it's unlikely any shorts make the final list without a strong publicity push, you are absolutely free to put whatever you'd like into your list. I'd be curious to see what shorts you throw your weight behind.

and even then, I'm sure I don't have everything ordered perfectly. I chose to post asap though because I just don't think it's worth it trying to perfect the order because in a way it's impossible. I divided my list into tiers before I ordered it so the movies are GENERALLY in their correct place according to my beliefs.

*IMPORTANT NOTES*

-I haven't seen Do the Right Thing yet, so don't scream at me for not including it
-I haven't seen any of the most praised animated films to come out recently
-I tried to take as much as I could into account: personal favs, box office, impact, critical praise, rewatch value, etc.

So here it is:

*deleted to make my counting easier, see more recent list*

Admittedly, I missed some of last year's big titles like No Country and There Will Be Blood, so perhaps they warrant inclusion, who knows, haven't seen them. If you're wondering where sometimes acclaimed movies like Memento or Punch Drunk Love are, they're nowhere near my top 100 (never mind that I only did 50), because they suck.

Anyway -- after my obvious favorites, it gets a little stickier, and I could list movies from this time period that I really, really love, but it gets impossible to rate one higher than the other, so you only get 50. Sure I forgot something, too.

1. Hoop Dreams
2. Happy Together
3. The Thin Blue Line
4. Ghost World
5. In the Mood For Love
6. Traffic
7. Rushmore
8. Blue Velvet

(actually it gets really hard after this point)

9. City of God
10. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
10. When Harry Met Sally
11. Children of Men
12. The Iron Giant
13. The Big Lebowski
14. Do the Right Thing
15. Anchorman
16. Goodfellas
17. The Fog of War (yeah I got two Errol Morris near the top -- deal with it)
18. The Perfect Candidate
19. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
20. Half Nelson
21. Pulp Fiction
22. The Usual Suspects
23. Adaptation
24. Sling Blade
25. Requiem for a Dream
26. Darjeeling Limited
27. Short Cuts
28. Fight Club
29. Akira
30. Die Hard
31. Aliens
32. Fargo
33. The Princess Bride
34. The War Room
35. The Breakfast Club
36. Knocked Up
37. The Incredibles
38. Election
39. Solaris (remake)
40. All The Real Girls
41. Clerks
42. The Aviator
43. Art School Confidential
44. Be Kind, Rewind
45. Amelie
46. Spellbound
47. Amadeus
48. Leon: The Professional

**(I just removed I'm Gonna Git You Sucka at #97 and replaced it with Boomerang)**

Original Post:

This was much harder than I thought it would be. Gave me a newfound appreciation for those publications who do such lists.

A couple of caveats: 1. All of the films on this list are pretty much based in (North) America. That means no foreign films like City of God, British films like the Bond series, or any films that originated or are primarily based overseas, like Children of Men; 2. There are no 2008 films on this list, mostly because the year's only halfway over, and I didn't think it made sense to add a handful of films from this year and subsequently sacrifice other films on the list (the cuts I had to make for this incarnation of the list were painful enough)

So, with all that said, here it is:

1. Do the Right Thing (Spike Lee, 1989)
2. Goodfellas (Martin Scorsese, 1990)
3. Risky Business (Paul Brickman, 1983)
4. Fight Club (David Fincher, 1999)
5. Die Hard (John McTiernan, 1988)
6. Back to the Future (Robert Zemeckis, 1985)
7. Pulp Fiction (Quentin Tarantino, 1994)
8. Heat (Michael Mann, 1995)
9. Rushmore (Wes Anderson, 1998)
10. House Party (Reginald Hudlin, 1990)
11. Out of Sight (Steven Soderbergh, 1998)
12. magnolia (Paul Thomas Anderson, 1999)
13. The Fugitive (Andrew Davis, 1993)
14. Toy Story (John Lasseter, 1995)
15. Unforgiven (Clint Eastwood, 1992)

>23. Before Sunrise

no before sunset? it's the better one imo

>53. Kingpin

i was watching this again a couple weeks ago. i never noticed before that damn near every other scene is a montage. great shit though. makes you wonder if bill murray has ever *not* made a movie better with his presence?

>74. Silence of the Lambs

it was on my original list. the only reason i took it off is because it's been so long i barely remember it. gotta re-visit.

>80. Trainspotting
>81. Traffic
>94. Old Boy

if i were to re-edit mine, these could likely bump some stuff. i'm leaving it alone though.

>90. Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome

you really like the second half of this movie? i always turn it off. fuck those kids.

>99. Master and Commander
>12. Dark City

still need to see these.

***Hangs head in shame*** You know, I've never actually seen this. At least not all of it. And the reason why is really, really silly. I know it didn't out well, at least initially, for two of them. So if I don't see the movie, I can at least pretend things all worked out perfectly for them. Yeah, really, really gay. I konw.

Well, "Larger Than Life" sucked ass. That probably wasn't Murray's fault though.

I'm starting to think I might be overrating it even at #74. That's probably me being contrary though.

I think I'm going to submit a re-edit. Just one though, 'cause it might get out of control.

Yeah, the kids sucked. But the first half is really, really, REALLY good. And the car clusterfuck at the very end was pretty cool.

>>12. Dark City

Definitely. You might want to mute the first minute of Dark City the first time you watch it, to get a better effect.

i actually saw before sunset first. i get your reasons and all *coughhomocough*, but all i can say is as a fan of the first, you're doing yourself an serious injustice by not seeing it. i can't recommend it highly enough.

haven't seen it. now i'll know to avoid it lol.

exactly why i wont start with that.

I think Before Sunset's closing moments were great. Personally, worth watching the movie for.

For some reason, whenever I see the title Stand By Me, I think of Stand and Deliver and Lean on Me. The glory days of HBO.

I wanted an animated GIF b/c Elba's and West's facial expressions are fuckin' gold, but I don't know which freeware program is best.

>when's your list coming?

After you post your Top 10 Since 2000. J/K. For real though, post a list, forget the capsules. I wanted it to be more than a list post, but I think people were turned off by it.

As for this one, I got a list done, but making sure some titles don't fall through the cracks.

Plus, I'm kinda wavering on my criteria. What was yours? You played straight up favorites through and through? This is a great post, but to me it seems like a misnomer because personal classics/favorites doesn't necessarily mean the best films.

If I post a list now, I'd at least update it twice because there're some good new and upcoming DVD releases. Going off of Man Push Cart and critical reception, Chop Shop feels like it'll be on my list. Can't wait to see Shotgun Stories, Before the Rain, and Honeydripper, too. So I'm trying to minimize how many lists I post.

i wouldn't mind having one of avon's expression when string first suggested taking prop joe's package.

haha, yeah i haven't forgotten about it. i actually opened it yesterday when i was working on this list. i'll get on it, since after revisiting some stuff, some of my selections have changed. plus if people get into this list they might be more inspired to contribute to that one... or maybe the opposite lol.

favorites always factor in... it's pretty much impossible for them not to. but this time i tried to move more away from faves and focus on what i think are just the best films that hold up over time. i mean goodfellas is my favorite on the list but i also believe it's the best . but if it were straight up favorites my top five would probably go something like... goodfellas, lebowski, karate kid, boogie nights, ghost world.

after re-watching shawshank recently it's really risen in ranks for me. i think the fact that it was on tbs/tnt daily for so many years kind of numbed me to how great it is. same thing with l.a. confidential. every time i watch it (i think a couple weeks ago was my third), i feel like i've been sleeping hard on it.

fuck it man... do it, then update. you know damn well there's always gonna be something waiting in the wings. plus you always come with interesting choices. shit, i wonder if yogaflame is gonna make a list. 100 greatest films...including 90 i've never heard of haha.

Is that the one when Avon took the phone off his ear and held it out to the side and making a face?

This was the route I was taking. More on that below.

Great flicks. I find the American films the hardest to choose between. Don't know the reason behind that.

>fuck it man... do it, then update. you know damn well there's
>always gonna be something waiting in the wings.

Very true. I have a list, kinda. The Top 10's pretty much set, but thought ranking the rest was gonna be a breeze, but the lower in rank I get, it's harder to choose. Now I'm stuck as hell. Figured ranking faves would be much easier, but the problem is I like so much on the list more or less equally. At the least, the latter 50 is pretty much interchangeable. At the most, the last 80 is interchangeable.

On the other hand, not really choosing personal classics is easier, I think for now. Like, seeing which ones were the most ambitious narrative-wise or lack thereof or most stylistically or thematically ambitious is kind of easier to rank than shit I just love on a visceral and personal tip.

Have you seen Golden Door, Duck Season, This is England, and After Life? I'm 99.9% sure you'd love Golden Door; 99.9% sure you'd love SOME stuff of Duck Season; and 80-something percent sure you'd like This Is England. After Life is just a charming-ass movie with fuckin' heart and humanity.

i think i had the hardest time with the bottom 10-15 because mainly that's where i started having to eliminate. even a couple days later some titles have come up that i missed but i don't feel like updating. overall i'm comfortable with my choices.

That'd be awesome. I love Avon's face and delivery of "Why?" (or whatever his exact words were) in response to Stringer telling him about his question to Mouzone.

I feel you. Renumbering/rearranging shit would get tedious. And the ranking are always changing. My ten for the 2000s would look different today.

Hope you dig 'em. If you don't, take it easy on 'em if you post about 'em in the WDYWLWs. LOL.

>3. Yi Yi (2000)

Really need to see this again....I had a tricky experience on first viewing. I was half asleep pretty much the entire movie and I didn't think it was very good, then I remember liking the end ALOT. Had absolutely no idea where to put it in my list.

>5. Fargo (1996)

so you still think it's the Coens' best? I don't think it holds up very well anymore...still good though for sure

>29. Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989)

a little low imo

damn, pretty high on your list for something you were half awake for. definitely check it out again. just a beautiful film in every way.

i think a case can be made for miller's crossing, and possibly no country (we'll have to see how it holds up over time), but i couldn't disagree with you more on this. fargo just gets better and better imo

>>29. Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989)

i think there are four movies on my list that i've only seen once and this is one of them. i have to see it again at some point to see if my opinion changes one way or another. i thought it was great though.

At least you included it...I'm really interested to see where everyone puts this on their list. I think it's definitely one of the best American films of that past 25 years

Some people counted trilogies and sequels as one. Can we do this, because this will alter my list.

70. "List"
In response to Reply # 0
Mon Jul-28-08 11:42 PM by Frank Longo

Note that this isn't a list of what I think are the greatest or best movies since 1983. These are my favorites. I went with my gut and placed movies wherever they felt right to me. There wasn't a consistent criteria, to be honest. Replay value played a part sometimes. Personal aesthetics played a part sometimes. Perfection or how close to it (or how far from it) didn't factor in much. (I left off the perfect Ratatouille.) There wasn't a go-to tiebreaker criteria.

I've missed titles, no doubt. There was one I had in my mind that I had to include, but at the time of posting I couldn't remember it. Had to leave off too much great stuff.

What's next? All-time Top 100?

*deleted to make my counting easier, see more recent list*

but, in the cases of Ran and Short Cuts, not enough for that list. Now, Paris, Texas (and Wings of Desire and Tokyo-Ga) is another story. It was part of a large group of flicks that is a millimeter behind any of the flicks from places 70-something to 100. Ran and Short Cuts are staggering achievements compared to some of the imperfect and minor stuff that made my Top 100, but that's how a list of faves go.

I really like your inclusion of El Norte.

>because looking through it I don't recognize much

I'm sure you've heard about most of 'em. Maybe it's just that the totally unfamiliar ones are skewing your impression a bit.

They Shoot Pictures, Don't They has a great "overlooked" list called "Doubling the Canon." I've been using that for a while.

Likewise.

>>1. A Brighter Summer Day (Edward Yang, 1991)
>
>still mad that i missed the screening of this.

There's the DVD-R of it at superhappyfun.com if mediocre A/V quality won't bother you too much. With his death, it would really be a crime if at least that doesn't get a proper and as-pristine-as-possible DVD release.

> what's keeping
>so much of his stuff off dvd?

I think it has to do with who owns the rights. I read somewhere that actual ownership of his flicks are hard to determine, the financers are hard to track down, or something along those lines. Most of the time Yang himself provided the prints to retrospectives. Yang's wife is said to be very active in trying to get his stuff out.

The Terrorizers, A Brighter Summer Day, and Yi Yi are the 3 flicks that have been screened at tributes since his death. Maybe those more than the others have a greater chance of DVD releases.

>good call on Once Were Warriors. forgot all about that one.
>not sure if it would have cracked my list but i like it alot.

I remember you saying that you liked it. Powerhouse performances.

>>2. The Decalogue (Krzysztof Kieslowski, 1989)

Check out Decalogue/Episode 5 on disc 2. It's o.k. to view them out of order. You'll be moved.

>>3. A Short Film About Killing (Krzysztof Kieslowski, 1988)

The extended version of Decalogue 5. Much better transfer, more character development, but the weaker final image. Both of the "versions" are essential.

>>6. Ratcatcher (Lynne Ramsay, 1999)

You'd dig this.

>>11. An Angel at My Table (Jane Campion, 1990)

I highly recommend this one. I stand by it 100%. Been trying to "Deebot" this to PTP for a while. Maybe I should type in caps. It worked for him.

>>18. Local Hero (Bill Forsyth, 1983)

You'd dig it and its tone. Highly recommended.

>>39. Broadway Danny Rose (Woody Allen, 1984)

You'd like it, I think.

>>45. Happy Together (Wong Kar-wai, 1997)

Visually, the height of the WKW-Doyle partnership. Striking. Great use of Zappa, too. Some of WKW's most emotionally precise moments are found there.

>>80. The Horse Thief (Tian Zhuangzhuang, 1986)

Made Scrosese's 90s top-ten. That guy has pretty good taste.

>>82. Come and See (Elem Klimov, 1985)

A must-see war movie.

>>86. One False Move (Carl Franklin, 1992)

It was Richard Price's choice for Artforum's best films of the 90s or something. Not sure if it was meant as his #1 choice:

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0268/is_4_38/ai_58499657
RICHARD PRICE, novelist/screenwriter (Clockers): Carl Franklin's One False Move (1991). Clean and sharp, it was a perfect throwback to the double-bill films of the '40s. An interracial balancing act of compassion and intimacy, with a thriller's sense of the inexorability of violence.

>>93. The Best of Youth (Marco Tullio Giordana, 2003)

99.9% sure you'd dig this. No frills storytelling. This along with Memories of Murder would be my stock responses to counter people saying non-English language flicks are pretentious or fussy.

>>100. Eight Diagram Pole Fighter (Lau Kar-leung, 1983)

Just for the final 2 fight scenes especially the big one at the end.

An Angel At My Table, Local Hero, One False Move, and The Best of Youth - my strongest recommendations out of this bunch.

Really the greatest anti-war film ever made.

Very, very hard to take.

(although easier for me to take than anything by Hou Hsiao-hsien or Abbas Kiarostami, for very different reasons obviously)

Off the top, I agree. Certainly the most visceral. If they ever start up another PTP Movie Club, this should be the first pick.

But I thought Rosenbaum was never wrong in your eyes!? Nah, it's all good. I don't agree with him on a lot of stuff. I totally can see why people don't like them, but I do think their earlier works would go down better for people that don't like/hate stuff like Flowers of Shanghai and Taste of Cherry.

You should post a list. Even an off the top, half-ass one done in 15 minutes.

I might have to. The hard part for me is figuring out which of my favorite movies were made during this time period. A load of the choices I'm seeing and agree with I would have never really thought of as fitting within the boundaries, it's just counter intuitive to the way my brain sorts things, I guess.

Weirdly enough my agreement with Rosenbaum kind of ends when it gets to the late nineties. I just noticed this as I was checking off a few more films from his list of favorite movies in Essential Cinema that I've recently seen.

I think I watched Come and See on Janey's recommendation. The only competition it has as far as it's visceral impact is documentary footage and maybe exploitative garbage like The Men Behind The Sun.

Also, top marks for Eight Diagram Pole Fighter.

That's definitely the hardest and shittiest part about it.

Come and See, Anders Thomas Jensen (you're a fan, right?), Lone Scherfig - Janey comes through.

Any docus you recommend?

Just on the final 2 fight sequences alone. I'm gonna rewatch some stuff on my list b/c I kind of hope I can drop some and fit in Legend of Drunken Master (a typical/boring HK choice, I know), Extreme Prejudice, Predator, Narc, Ronin, and other action/genre stuff.

How is Drunken Monkey (2002)?

Yeah, I'm a big fan. Nothing of his quite made my list. The films might not be perfect but his voice is really right up my alley.

Not really off the top of my head beyond the big Holocaust docs. CBC Newsworld plays a load but I never remember the titles.
War Photographer almost made my list.

I never got around to Drunken Monkey. I've heard it's good but I've never heard anyone exalting it as a masterpiece.
I wouldn't call Drunken Master typical, it easily stands out.
Narc and Extreme Prejudice slipped my mind.

>1. Cure (Kurosawa)

Great choice. I was considering this and Charisma.

>5. The Eel (Imamura)

I dig.

>12. The Decalogue (Kieslowski)

!!!

>13. Come and See (Klimov)

!!!

>14. After Dark, My Sweet (Foley)

Gonna check this out.

>18. Leolo (Lauzon)

Been meaning to see this. Are the Jeunet comparisons valid? I put off seeing this one b/c I think I read something about feces, body fluids, or something. I'm most likely wrong on that. It was something that made me think it's not my cup of tea, though.

>54. Zelig (Allen)

This, Broadway DR, C & M, and Cairo were the 4 Allens I was choosing b/w. Rewatched this and BDR last night. Next up is Cairo. For the moment Zelig is in, BDR is out. I really, really dig the pre-Annie Hall stuff, and Zelig is of that period.

>61. The Return (Zvyagintsev)

I was thinking about putting this on just for the way the table/meal scene was lit. I think about it often.

re: Brother's Keeper

Great choice. I always forget about this one.

It's really great. Patric, Dern and Ward are all brilliant in it. Makes a great Jim Thompson double feature with Coup de torchon.

To a degree, technically they come from the same direction but there are, yeah, bodily fluids, loads of sexual anxiety and stuff. He's just as imaginative but he doesn't go for whimsy, it's something else that really doesn't come up in any other films I can think of and it can be a little hard to take. I HATED it the first time I saw it (I was 14).

It isn't Salo though. You've gotta see it.

Yeah, me too. I like Purple Rose of Cairo--I should probably edit it in--a bit more than BDR but all 4 of those are great. Shadows and Fog has it's moments as well.

I've been meaning to give Match Point a second look.

Yeah, that's a great scene.

I'm tempted to throw Some Kind of Monster in too. I also need to re-watch Paradise Lost, there's a third part coming out next year.

Hopefully soon. Sounds like a bold contemporary pick for Time Mag's 100 Best Films.

Oh, shit, didn't know about that. I still haven't seen Paradise Lost 2 which is stupid considering I found PL to be fuckin' engrossing.

Thanks.

re: Drunken Master 2 (Post 111)

Oh, yeah, as a film, DM2 does stand out among HK stuff, but I meant "typical" in the sense that if there's a HK flick that makes the cut chances are high it's going to be picked.

without thinking of the superbad commentary. jonah hill kept quoting a hollywood reporter review that basically said if superbad had any guts the guys would've had sex in the end like in alfonso cauron's "y tu mama tambien". but the way jonah kept saying it had me dying.

the proposition was on my original list but i just don't remember enough about it. grimey as fuck though, i need to see it again.

Great list. Probably about 75% of it is stuff everyone can watch and enjoy 2 or 3 times in a row any day.

>10. Midnight Run

I might be wrong, but I think this has a very good chance of making the final cut which would be awesome.

Flicks I've always REALLY wanted to see and never gotten around to.

Blue Velvet: My first Lynch. Real fucked up, but very very interesting. A very neat piece that deserves a second viewing.

Hannah and Her Sisters: Brilliant. I can't believe I hadn't seen this yet. So terrific. Will easily make my list.

The Player: Very fascinating stuff. The opening tracking shot set my expectations higher than I should have set them... I loved the satire of Hollywood, and was more interested in seeing more party scenes than more murder-mystery/meeting-the-Icelandic-chick scenes. Still, excellently crafted, a terrific ending, and it too deserves a second viewing to pick more up.

My list will be mostly American flicks, since I'm just simply not too familiar with many flicks from the outside. But that's another post to be made entirely.

It didn't get its US commercial release until '83. So, that makes it a 1983 film to me.

I don't know how I did this, but I omitted Robocop from that list. I know I like it more than Ratatouille. I knew there was a reason I was trying to make it 101.

And a lot of people are sleeping on The Mighty Ducks and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. But I understand though, your shortlist was probably almost 300 deep, too.

*deleted to make it easier for me to count*

The first 20 were simple as anything and are rock solid in their place, but from like 30-100 it was just back and forth with the positions.

I removed the following (wall*e, A Christmas Story, Top Secret!, The Breakfast Club) because they were either made this year or I have seen them so many freakin times that while they’d be my “Best 100” I cannot list them as my personal best 100, and THAT ultimately is the criteria I went with: What movie would I have no problem sitting down AT ANY MOMENT and watching or recommending watching.
One thing that surprised me reading everyone else’s list is how many people voted for, and where they placed, Do The Right Thing. That movie wouldn’t make my Top 200 list. I just don’t get the affinity for that film. Of Spike Lee’s films, Malcolm X clearly is the most polished and cohesive story – despite its length. I would rank Mo Betta, 25th Hour, Get On The Bus, and Inside Man ahead of DTRT. Just me.

I was surprised how many time films with Kevin Costner and Mark Wahlberg came up in my mind. Nothing against either one of them, I actually like them both as actors, but I had a lot of Costner’s films on there and I didn’t even include Bull Durham, Dances, Waterworld (yes it WAS good), or American Flyers (okay…that was a joke). I could also interchange Training Day with King Arthur with Shooter, all done by Antoine Fuqua who I think is the most criminally underrated director on the planet.

>1. GoodFellas

correct

>3. Amadeus

i know this is a great movie and all but i have a serious aversion to this era. it's all those wigs and funny outfits.... they just creep me the fuck out. it's the reason i still haven't seen barry lyndon.

>6. Trainspotting

i forgot all about this one. not sure if it would've made the final cut but it's really good.

>9. Wall Street

great choice. mad underrated. 80s stone >>>>> 90s stone.

>16. School of Rock

y'know i've always failed to see what people find so special about this one. it's not like i have bad things to say about it but it's just kinda there to me. that, and i haven't liked jack black much in anything other than high fidelity.

>17. As Good As It Gets

Receptionist: How do you write women so well?
Melvin: I think of a man, and I take away reason and accountability.

good shit.

>21. Midnight Run

the inclusion of this on so many lists warms my fucking heart.

>23. Three Kings

another underrated one. if i were to re-edit, it would likely make it.

>29. Napoleon Dynamite

really??? aside from uncle rico, i think it just plain sucks. i mean, no lebowski on your list but you include this wackness? there's something wrong with you.

>45. National Lampoon’s Vacation

i'm kinda mad at myself for not including the griswold family somewhere on my list.

>64. Something Wild

yes!! it's been so long. i love that movie.

>78. American Beauty

"a movie so confused, it thinks a plastic bag is beautiful. to me it's just litter. somebody throw that bag away before it suffocates a duck." (c)king_friday. actually i really like the movie but not as much as a love that quote.

>100. THE GRIFTERS

great choice.

i actually have never seen these:

>14. Hope and Glory
>15. Radio Days
>28. A Fish Called Wanda
>87. Titanic

The thing is, I LOVE shit like this, but knowing how I am, it would literally take me hours to come up with my list, because I wouldn't let myself do it half-ass. So I just can't commit to doing it.

136. "Re: scoring"
In response to Reply # 0

I don't think your method of tiering the movies in sets of ten is better than the standard method. It doesn't really address the "Police Academy 3" problem, and actually rewards the #1 spot more than the standard method does.

Your method, as I understand it, is this:
1st = 11
2nd - 10th = 10
11th - 20th = 9 points
21st - 30th = 8 points
...
91st - 100th = 1 point

For the sake of comparison, let's multiply all scores by ten. It won't affect the rankings, it will just make it easier to compare against the standard method. Thus, your scoring method is now:

1st = 110
2nd - 10th = 100
11th - 20th = 90 points
21st - 30th = 80 points
...
91st - 100th = 10 points

Now compare this to the more common alternative:
1 = 100
2 = 99
3 = 98
4 = 97
...
99 = 2
100 = 1

The main effects of your method are:
- to weight # 1 slightly more (completely in contrast to your purpose)
- to equalize the values of movies in each set of ten, by boosting up the scores of movies near the bottom of each set of ten.

My main problem with your method is that there is a big difference between the movie ranked # 90 (20 points) and the one ranked # 91 (10 points). I don't think this is good.

I much prefer the standard method, and with everyone ranking 100 movies, I don't think one crazy ranking should skew the results too much.

For example:
Let's consider someone putting Police Academy 3 at # 1. In the standard method, it would end up with 100 points. In your method, 110 points.

Now let's compare it against a movie with an average ranking of # 51. In the standard method, that's good for 50 points. In your method, also 50 points.

With just 20 posters, even if only half of the posters list the movie at an average ranking of 51, that's still 500 points. This will easily outrank the 100 or 110 from one crazy poster.

The point at which one single # 1 vote beats a lower ranked movie on a bunch of lists is around 91. With 10 voters putting a movie at # 91, it ends up with 100 points, tied with one # 1 vote. That's not a bad result, really.

I don't think we need to correct for this, and in fact, your method actually rewards the crazy poster more, since # 1 is worth 110 instead of 100 points.

Plus, the whole tiering method is odd because I don't think # 20 should be ten points more than # 21, while # 22 is the same as # 21...

126 that I thought of (including 58 definites), and 85 that I yanked from other people's lists because I had forgotten them.

From there I've got some serious work to do.

I think I'll be more likely to go with the ones that popped into my OWN head.

This was my method:
- First, I listed all the ones that came to mind immediately. I started an Excel sheet, putting movies into the "definites" and "possibles" columns.

- Then I scanned my "movie book" (in 2004 I started grading every movie I see with a letter rating) for A and A+ joints. Again, I separated them into two columns.

- Then I scanned my shelves of DVDs and VHS tapes and added some from there.

- Then I perused everyone else's lists to see what I missed.

- The final, time-killing task is to cut the lists down to 100.

In any case, I'm happy to post any of my lists. Here's the list of 85 that I snagged from other people's lists that are worth consideration (does not include stuff already on my list):

batman
when harry met sally
***** saving private ryan
donnie brasco
gladiator
big
true romance
goonies
true lies
***** young guns
8 mile
***** ghostbusters
half baked
PCU
***** princess bride
menace to society
billy madison
fugitive
robin hood
primal fear
pirates of the caribbean
parenthood
my cousin vinny
***** stand by me
planes trains and automobiles

american pie
roxanne
pan's labyrinth
ghost world
blood simple
***** american beauty

***** jerry maguire
***** there's something about mary

***** trading places
***** almost famous
lost in translation
last boy scout
fear of a black hat
history of violence
men in black
total recall
jurassic park
nightmare before christmas
28 days later
crouching tiger hidden dragon
fletch
***** natural born killers
***** white men can't jump
a league of their own
bad boys
dead poets' society
swingers
carlito's way
nightmare on elm street
***** beetlejuice
***** heathers
castaway
hotel rwanda
bowling for columbine
crash
dumb and dumber
belly
private parts
raging bull
spaceballs
old school
***** lost boys
as good as it gets
the prestige

The ones with stars are more likely to make the cut, but we'll have to see.

Note to Frank_Longo - this is NOT my list!

These have been selected as definites for my first attempt at a ranking (coming soon):

>Sin city
>pulp fiction
>coming to america
The LOTR trilogy (since this is likely how they will be scored)
>memento
>fight club
>spiderman 2
>xmen 2
>donnie darko
>oldboy
>reservoir dogs
>grindhouse
>back to the future
>die hard
>sixth sense
>braveheart
>clerks
>chasing amy
>good will hunting
>forrest gump
>shawshank redemption
>indiana jones and the last crusade
>high fidelity
>usual suspects
>LA confidential
>silence of the lambs
>office space
>borat
>star wars - attack of the clones
>star wars - revenge of the sith
>superbad
>terminator 2
>american psycho
>clueless
>eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
>equilibrium
>this film is not yet rated
>glory
>machinist
>naked gun
>kill bill 1 and 2
>face/off

Previous definites that were removed from the first round of rankings:

>crow
>shining --- 1980, not eligible
>seven
>singles
>star wars - a new hope --- 1977, not eligible
>star wars - empire strikes back --- 1980, not eligible
>terminator
>toy story
>amistad
>city of god
>fahrenheit 9/11
>F*ck
>into the wild
>juno
>jesus camp

Possibles that moved up into definites:
>butterfly effect
>40 year old virgin
>dogma

From other people's lists that moved up into definites:
when harry met sally
saving private ryan
gladiator
ghostbusters
princess bride
stand by me
groundhog day
big lebowski
raising arizona
matrix
american beauty
jerry maguire
there's something about mary
ferris bueler's day off
almost famous
natural born killers
white men can't jump
beetlejuice
heathers
lost boys

This is only 65 movies, so there's still room for 35 more... and even some of these 65 might still be revised and removed... I'm not committing to anything yet.

164. "IMPORTANT QUESTION regarding trilogies:"
In response to Reply # 0

How are we treating the Lord of the Rings movies? It seems that some people are lumping them together ("LOTR trilogy") and others are listing them as single movies ("LOTR- Two Towers"). This is going to wreak havoc with the scoring (I don't know if Frank already has a plan).

Someone pointed out that the EW list puts LOTR as one movie... which is fine but we have to be consistent.

Wouldn't we also have to do this for Star Wars?
(the newer trilogy of prequels, since the original trilogy is exempt - although I think Jedi counts since it was 1983).

Also, there's Die Hard and Back to the Future, Terminator...

The thing is, LOTR is the only one where all three movies are dope as fuck (IMO). I can't imagine people actually putting Die Hard 2 and 3, BTTF 2 and 3, or Terminator 3 on their lists, but with LOTR, all of the three are valid. So maybe the question only applies to LOTR after all...

Then what about Kill Bill 1 and 2, or Grindhouse?

Frank or someone needs to make an executive decision (or we can vote, but there's probably not enough time) on how to handle this.

171. "Looks like most people are lumping LOTR and Kill Bill"
In response to Reply # 164

There are a few cats who have the LOTR movies separately, but most people are treating the whole trilogy as one movie.

Same with Kill Bill - most people are lumping both together, although I saw at least one person with Vol. 1 by itself.

I've also seen a few votes for Grindhouse as a single movie, and didn't see any votes for Planet Terror or Death Proof by themselves.

However, for the others (Star Wars, Die Hard, Back to the Future, Terminator), everyone seems to be just listing the movies individually on their lists and not the whole trilogy (probably because for these, the whole trilogy isn't consistently good).

Seems like I rarely see this mentioned in general. One of my favorites when I was a kid. Haven't seen it in so long, though.
