"PTP's New Classics: The Definitive List"

Y'all are about to see the importance of participation. Truth be told, I wish I'd posted a full 100, so a few of these flicks that I love coulda jumped a HUGE amount. If I'd ranked Glengarry Glen Ross #51 on my personal list, it would've jumped from 182 to 148 on the group list. Yeah, the voting was that close.

I went with McDeez's suggestion of simply giving the top-ranked flick 100 points, second-ranked 99 points, etc. It made it a HELL of a lot easier, and gave accurate results in my opinion. When there was a tie, I broke it by giving the higher rank to the film which was on more lists. If there was a tie in that category as well, I went with which film was listed highest on someone's list.

And I'll post up the Top 200 instead of simply the Top 100, because it gives more to debate (i.e. "Donnie Darko made the Top 100, and Ratatouille missed it? Seriously?" Things like this).

Thanks to everyone who participated. I look forward to seeing y'alls opinions, and hopefully having even more voters for future listmaking.

- The number of lists each movie appeared on (was anything a unanimous selection? what movie was on the most lists - was it Goodfellas?)

- The number of #1 votes each movie received, OR the highest ranking it received

I'm not asking you to do this (since tallying this must have already taken a shitload of work), and I'm not saying I'm going to do it anytime soon, but it would be a nice addition.

Nothing was unanimous. Goodfellas made 22 lists tho. Do the Right Thing made 21, City of God and Pulp Fiction each made 20, and Die Hard and Fargo each made 19.

Goodfellas was ranked #1 the most, with 6. Do The Right Thing, Malcolm X, Brazil, and Once Upon a Time in America all had 2 #1s. No other films made #1 on more than one list.

The film with the highest average? In the Mood For Love, placed on four lists ranked 4, 5, 5, and 6.

Monsters Inc., Blood Simple, and Men In Black-- three flicks that would make my Top 100-- missed the cut by small margins as well.

Can't think of anything that got outrageously snubbed, though I'll throw my vote to American Pie for biggest snub.

Just for fun, what was #201?

>50. This is Spinal Tap- 499

It's a classic. Should be seen at least once.

>89. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert
>Ford- 369

Go to iTunes, allmusic, amazon, or whatever and listen to samples of the score and keep in mind that those beautiful pieces of music accompany some of the most beautiful images of all-time. Sam Rockwell and Casey Affleck kill it. Pitt gives an underrated performance. I think the whole cast is pretty much perfect - Dillahunt, Shepard, Parker, Renner, etc. So worth it on those things alone.

>197. Happy Together- 162

With images like these:

http://img5.allocine.fr/acmedia/medias/nmedia/18/60/03/45/18861880.jpg

...and images more impressive than 3 of the 4 above...

...with probably the matchless Chris Doyle's best work yet, shifting saturated color palettes, b&w, the music of Piazzolla, Veloso, and Zappa, first-rate acting by Leung and Cheung, I'd say give it a go.

that was the one movie I was really tracking.

Goodfellas? Yeah, okay -- that's absolutely ridiculous, but still I knew it was an inevitability somewhere near the top.

But Hoop Dreams at #15? I can only assume that everyone who didn't put it in the top 10 just hasn't seen it, otherwise it makes no sense whatsoever. I have half a mind to just up and quit this subforum over that shit. I don't even care what kind of movie watcher you are, if you can't stand up and marvel at the brilliance that is Hoop Dreams, you're just missing SOMETHING.

There's a lot that goes into making the "best" movie or topping a list or whatever it is, but I just feel like Hoop Dreams appeal is universal.

I'm disappointed, PTP. I'm shaking my head right now.

I've seen it, and it's one of the greatest documentaries I've seen. So its exclusion on my list isn't saying that Hoop Dreams isn't that great, but that there are that many films that I favor for whatever reason (e.g., a film that I'd probably be in the mood for most of the time). Really, past the 20th or 30th spot, give or take a few, they're interchangeable. Plus, my list was one of favorites. Maybe you're someone who makes no such distinction between favorite and best/greatest, but I'm one that does.

>I'm disappointed, PTP. I'm shaking my head right now.

I thought Bus 174 was gonna be higher, but I'm not disappointed in its ranking or the final list, can't hate on them, since I'm assuming most lists were ranking favorites.

Mine was one of favorites as well, but I'm big on documentaries and so I've watched Hoop Dreams a lot. I think it's entertaining and enlightening, and not at all a chore to sit through even at three hours.

I mean, if Do The Right Thing is #2 ... Hoop Dreams is an infinitely superior film about race in America, if you ask me...

I've never seen it, so I didn't rank it. Maybe I would have rated it -- who knows?

I just ... I really hold Hoop Dreams up high, and I'm always a little disappointed at how frequently it's slept on. I thought it would be top 10, but meh -- #15 isn't the worst.

No doubt does the content of DTRT factor in its ranking on people's respective lists, but I'm speculating that it's not the only criteria for someone ranking DTRT ahead of HD.

Sorry, (I'm misreading you aren't I?) but I wasn't implying that if HD was on your list then Bus 174 should've been on it, too, or anything like that. Just that like HD, B174 was a popular documentary in PTP and thought it was gonna place higher.

Anyway, you should see it now...no, like, yesterday.

>I just ... I really hold Hoop Dreams up high, and I'm always a

I don't think it's slept on through and through in PTP and in general. Though, slept on in that I believe it and lots more movies should be seen as much as The Dark Knight and posted about with more fervor, but hey. I just think that not enough people participated in this poll; HD got lots of love in the Top 5 Documentaries post not too long ago.

So there should be no gripes about B2TF being above HD. Folks probably just prefer fantasy/sci-fi/action flicks to documentaries.

84. "First question -- what's your favorite documentary?"
In response to Reply # 82

And how do you rate documentaries in general?

Secondly, this is by NO MEANS a sports documentary. It's a social documentary. It features FOUR YEARS' worth of footage that is edited down to a very watchable, very dramatic, very interesting three hour movie.

It has good photography (shots of crosses at the Catholic schools, nice shots of the commute on the way in, shots of William working at the Catholic school, state tournament shots of the stands, etc.) It has insanely memorable moments (Arthur's dad copping at the playground he's playing on, Arthur's mom graduating nursing school, Arthur playing his dad one-on-one, Arthur going to Mineral College JC etc.). It meaningfully explores class and race in America (Coach Pingatore and his relationship with William, Arthur's dad going in to settle the balance from Arthur's tuition, etc.). It ESPECIALLY explores the American family (William's older brother, William's dad, Arthur's dad, William's kid, etc.). The recruitment process with William at Marquette and everything?

I mean, if you seriously came away from that movie thinking "hood kids didn't make it at basketball" and that's all, well I just don't really know what to say...

night and fog, i guess

i judge documentaries no different than any other film...after all the only difference is that the people appearing on screen are amateurs.

well i appreciate the breakdown

i honestly havent ever seen the thing from start to finish..i never could...just bored the everliving shit out of me.

maybe one day i'll sit through it all and be wowed like everyone else seems to be...i just dont see it.

yes -- it's weird and disturbing. That's kinda, you know, the point.

I still think it's the best movie of the 1980s. I'm frankly a little stunned it didn't crack the Top 100 here.

Oh -- and in NO universe is Mullholland Drive a better film than Blue Velvet.

Cosign. It made my 100 (at # 89), but # 3? Holy shit.

>>13. The Usual Suspects- 960
>
>Wow. Yikes.

I had it at # 16. This movie was dope as fuck. I take it you didn't like it?

>>18. Rushmore- 827
>
>Never understood the appeal of this movie either. I've watched
>it like three times on cable, too.

Cosign. It's good, but not top 20 in the last 25 years good. Come on.

>>20. The Incredibles- 790
>
>On the record: Pixar's most overrated film.

Incredibles was very cool, but for me, it got cut even before I started giving out honorable mentions. Should be Top 200, though.

As for overratedness, the insane Wall-E adulation is getting close (although I haven't seen it yet, so maybe it's worthy...but I doubt it).

>>21. Batman Begins- 780
>
>WOW!

Yeah, that's high. I had it at 97. I had The Dark Knight at 91 (OKP put it at 110) - can't believe it's so low compared to Batman Begins, but maybe everyone hasn't seen it yet.

Wait, are 2008 movies supposed to be included? If so, that's actually a 26 year window (1983-2008). If not, we need to take them out...

>>22. Lord of the Rings Trilogy- 764
>
>I honestly can't imagine anybody who read the books first
>thinks highly of the movies. Not that they were bad, but they
>just pale in comparison. I mean, you might as well put the
>Harry Potter movies up here.

I disagree. I read and love the books, but I still loved the movies. The books are better, of course, but isn't that almost always the case? The movies were still among my favorites (I ranked the trilogy at # 6).

>>25. Ghostbusters- 722
>
>Count me as someone who liked the sequel better.

No way...

>>27. LA Confidential- 717
>

Wow, I thought it was cool as shit, original and very entertaining. I can't really see how it's boring...

>>37. Memento- 595

Wow, I had it at exactly 37. Guess you're in the minority on this one, Will.

>>41. Miller’s Crossing- 552
>
>Scratch Fargo -- *this* is the Coens' most overrated film.

I disagree, but then, I didn't even like Fargo. I liked this flick MUCH better than Fargo, yet it still didn't make my top 200.

>>42. Forrest Gump- 547
>
>LOL I can't fucking stand this movie.

I had this one at exactly 42, so this seems right to me. lol
I don't get why people would hate it. Too schmaltzy?

>>48. Anchorman- 501
>
>Old School murders this film!

I agree that Oldschool is much better, but neither one is really top 100 material. They're both too uneven.

>>54. Boyz N The Hood- 486
>
>bah. Menace is SOOOO much better.

I can kinda see that argument (although I had Boyz at 72 and Menace at 94), but Boyz in the Hood came first, so some could argue that Menace was a ripoff. I agree that Menace has more replayability and has aged better, but Boyz had a bigger impact and is more universally appealing.

>>89. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert
>>Ford- 369
>
>I must've seen a different movie than everybody else. Very

I thought it was really great. Normally I don't go for slow movies, but this one I really enjoyed.

IMO, these are the biggest omissions from the top 200 (I haven't really perused OKP's 101-200 yet, I just did a search for my top 50 movies):

- Natural Born Killers. I fucking love this movie, but it's nowhere to be found.

- Grindhouse. Yeah yeah, some people think it's shit. I enjoyed that movie more than anything I'd seen in the theater since Sin City.

- Star Wars III and II. Sure, Phantom Menace was kinda crap, but the other two were great. Yes, the love story sucked and the acting was kinda bad, but I loved movies overall.

- The Machinist and Equilibrium. Two Bale movies that were simply cool as shit. I wonder if people saw these and didn't like them, or haven't seen them?

- Face/Off. Perhaps a bit cheesy, but a damn good action movie.

- Clueless. How can you not love this movie? Clever, witty, funny, and a cultural landmark.

- Heathers. Do other people not think this movie is brilliant and funny?

Also, Better Off Dead! I even forgot about this movie, but it probably should have been in my top 100.

It's a great movie the first time. A good movie after that. No way would I say it's one of the top 15 movies of the past 25 years tho.

Machinist was okay. Moody and worth a watch...but I'm not sure it'd even make a "Best Of..." list for the year it was released. the ending was very M. Night-esque; in a bad way.

A lot of shit we agree on, but for other stuff we completely disagree. It seems to mostly be stuff I loved and you hated. I'll have to look at your list and see if there's any wack shit... lol

Okay, I checked.
TMNT2? (was that a joke?)
The Sandlot? Addams Family?
Those are the only ones I can really say are kinda wack.

There are some comedies I think you vastly overrated (Dumb and Dumber, Tommy Boy), but I can't say I didn't like them. You do have Coming to America tragically low.

I wasn't crazy about Trainspotting; I think it's kinda overrated. Requiem for a Dream was better, even though I could barely watch it and never want to see it again.

>>>>157. National Lampoon’s Vacation- 217 --------- Christmas

Wow. I guess I can see how it would turn people off, but I thought it was brilliant. I find that Juliette is somehow really sexy without being very pretty.

THE SANDLOT!! CMON!!

- "You're killing me Smalls!"
- "Is that your sister in leftfield? she's hot"
- Wendy Peppercorn!

you've gotta be either 18 or 38...everybody I know within five years of me LOVES that movie. I mean, anybody who has ever played summer baseball or was a child in suburban America loves that movie.

Yeah, I printed my list out and was going through it with my wife, and kinda rethought some of it... but didn't want to change anything. We decided Heat was too low (# 69), I remember that one. She said Usual Suspects should have been even higher than 16... But I digress.

I'm 31, actually. Can't remember when I saw that movie for the first time though - I think I caught it on TV sometime about 8-10 years ago. It didn't really make much of a lasting impact on me.

Not third best, no, but the filmmaking on display in it is pretty unparalleled. In the end it's just a gangster story, but as far as cinematography, editing, and style? My god, this film stands above almost everything on that list.

>>18. Rushmore- 827

Did an awful lot to define a specific "hip" aesthetic all by itself. Resurrected Bill Murray's career. Announced Wes Anderson as one of the pre-eminent talents of his generation. Helped spur the British Invasion revival in music.

That's fine if you're not personally feeling the suburban, white setting and emo heartbreak themes, but even by objective measure it's one of the best films to come out during this period.

which means I was basically just totally non-plussed.

Then I watched it more, and all the problems became more and more obvious -- flat performances, ultimately questionable editing, bad photography, painfully boring mis-en-scene, and a stupidly trite "MESSAGE" which ties it all together.

But I mean, agree to disagree, I suppose, but I can NEVER take someone's taste in film entirely serious when they ride for that movie.

The photography, for example, is undeniably bland.

bad photography,

It wasnt Pfister's best but it looked fine to me. He's certainly stepped up his game since then tho.

What was the message? I must've missed that.

LOL. This is the same reason why I was shocked to see Fight Club so high on Will's list. You just never know tho.

>The photography, for example, is undeniably bland.

Are you talking strictly about the polaroids, or the cinematography in general? The movie looks great to me. The production & costume design blend well together. The opening scene is still 1 of my favorites ever. The scene where his wife was attacked was nicely done as well. I guess I see how it still looked a little low budget, but I was so invloved in the story I wasn't too concerned. I felt the same way about Following.

>I thought the 3 leads were great

I thought they were good, but not "great." None of the actors really rose or fell in my esteem based on their performances in this movie, which makes it equal to something like 70% of films I watch in that regard.

>I liked how the b&w scenes went forward, the scenes in color
>went backwards & loved how they merged in the middle.

It's yeoman-like in its ability to tell the story, but not necessarily outstanding. The repeated little quick snippets which lead you into a scene ultimately feel too long, and I don't like the flash editing of his flashbacks. But that's a stylistic disagreement, not necessarily a knock. It's the pacing of watching lots of the same material that wears on me in repeated viewings.

>What was the message? I must've missed that.

The monologue he gives at the end (really the beginning) about how as long as everything works and feels good in the moment, what difference does it make? It's some navel-gazing, fifth-grade philosophizing on experience and consciousness that feels overdone.

We get it -- he lives in the moment.

>LOL. This is the same reason why I was shocked to see Fight
>Club so high on Will's list. You just never know tho.

Everybody has their triggers. Memento and Magnolia (which I hate like 100x more) are two really strong bellwethers for me.

Cinematography in general. Again -- it's not like sore-thumb sticking out bad or anything, it's just squarely average throughout. Personally, since film is primarily about image, I put VERY high stock in something having photography that really grabs my attention.

Memento is an engaging film because it has a very clever story, but I won't give it many compliments beyond that. As such, it was absent from my top 50, and probably would be from the 100, too.

But like I said -- different strokes. I can understand how people like it, but it generally means our priority in film aren't the same.

So, say, you know of a person and so far you know he/she likes Magnolia, Memento, Hoop Dreams, and In the Mood For Love. You're gonna write them off and never take their taste, opinions, and recommendations seriously just on the basis of Memento and Magnolia? The same goes in a case in which you only know that he/she likes Memento and Magnolia before you hear any of their other favorites? For all you know, you talk to them more and these might be some of their favorites:

The Fog of War
The Perfect Candidate
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Half Nelson
Pulp Fiction
The Usual Suspects
Adaptation
Hoop Dreams
Happy Together
The Thin Blue Line
Ghost World
In the Mood For Love
Traffic
Rushmore
Blue Velvet

^Those mixed in with others you slightly dislike or strongly dislike.

He/she could potentially turn you on to other great stuff. More often than not, I just think people's tastes are far too complex (i.e., no rhyme and reason), if they're being earnest, to dismiss them based on a few movies. You can browse the thousands of film-related lists on the internet or in magazines and find that people like stuff that you'd think they wouldn't like/love based on their other choices.

Don't you think it's close-minded or rash that someone who, say, hates Adaptation writes you off and not check out Hoop Dreams or Happy Together b/c it's coming from a list from someone whose taste and sensibility has Adaptation as a favorite?

That is not to say, though, that there are never gonna be cases where for the most part you and another person just have totally different sensibilities and taste.

I have yet to run into the problem where the person who loves those films also loves the same things I'm into. For a reason.

Yeah, our tastes definitely might match up in other spots, but when I DO turn them onto something like Perfect Candidate, they're not really feeling it, and when they turn me onto some cheese drama, or some recent Woody Allen or some shit, my eyes are glazing over, too.

I mean maybe it COULD happen, but I'm still waiting for that day to come.

I'll still listen to what that person has to say about different things to get a deeper sense of where they're coming from, and I might even watch some movies they and other people recommend, but I'm NOT trying to turn them onto shit I'm really feeling. If I come at them really hard going on about Shortcuts this, Shortcuts that, Robert Altman is a genius yadda yadda yadda I would be fully prepared for them to be like, "It was okay -- but what are you so excited about?"

And truth be told Memento just makes me suspicious, but Magnolia is a universal deal breaker.

But I mean the main thing? It's NEVER happened where a huge Magnolia fan was really upping me on some shit outside of my typical view.

>I have yet to run into the problem where the person who loves
>those films also loves the same things I'm into. For a
>reason.

I dunno, though. That's like saying only certain types of people love Magnolia which I think is pretty close-minded, no offense. (Though, in your experience your theory holds true so far.) It's like saying everyone who loves The Dark Knight is a fanboy geek that doesn't like non-mainstream or non-classical movies. I know someone that loves TDK and Tarvkovsky movies.

>I mean maybe it COULD happen, but I'm still waiting for that
>day to come.

Definitely. It could happen. What made me ask my question was that you said you'd never take someone seriously (key word: never). More below.

>But I mean the main thing? It's NEVER happened where a huge
>Magnolia fan was really upping me on some shit outside of my
>typical view.

Your experience is valid. When you say it's never happened, it's never happened so your belief holds true so far. It's just that there's so many people in this world and taste is a complex thing and like you said, it could happen.

One more thing, I think it's cool that you didn't get defensive. I hope I wasn't coming off as a jerk or some shit. My question was out of earnest curiosity, and my responses are earnest, too.

100% disagreement. I think Old School is one of the most overrated comedies of the last decade, not overrated in the sense that it's not funny and people think it is, but overrated in the sense that it's unevenly funny in chunks yet people think it's better than Animal House.

and while Animal House is obviously a better movie and Old School wouldn't exist w/o it, I find the latter just as *laugh out loud* funny

and more quotable, of course

btw -- where does it really go dull?

* Juliette Lewis in the perfect opener
* drunk wedding / Total Fucking Eclipse of the Heart
* Mitchapalooza
* Fight Club-influenced frat training
* Birthday party
* random Jeremy Piven scattered throughout
* obvious cheesy ending

the drunk college nostalgia with Old School is POWERFUL

The whole Olympics finale is not very funny (with the one exception of Vince smoking on the rings), and the fat guy jump is anti-funny. Craig Kilborn isn't really that effective as the douchey enemy.

Old School has Vince Vaughn, Will Ferrell, and some amusing Piven scenes. That's about it for me. And while it's still funny, everyone thinks it's one of the funniest movies of the past ten years. And I can think of many films funnier than that in the last ten. Maybe it'd make Top 20.

Call me a hater if you must. But I'm a huge Vince dickrider and a huge Ferrell dickrider, yet Old School doesn't do it for me like that.

>111. The Karate Kid- 309
I don't think this belongs here. Is it just nostalgia for people?

>112. Spider-Man 2- 303
I think this is way low. I think this is THE best superhero movie, just barely edging out X-Men 2 and with Dark Knight probably in third.

>114. When Harry Met Sally- 299
This should have made the top 100.

>117. Zodiac- 290
God, I hated this movie. BORING. How can a serial killer movie be so painfully fucking boring? And needlessly long too. Great cast though.

>121. There’s Something About Mary- 285
This should be higher. Comedies generally didn't fare well in this exercise, but I think this is one of the funnier movies in this time period. I had ti in the top 60.

>125. Clerks- 277
I love these movies (# 20 and 21!), but I understand they're not for everyone.

>132. Jerry Maguire- 263

>134. The 40 Year Old Virgin- 260
These should all be higher. 40 Year Old Virgin was one funny movie, and I think Raising Arizona is my favorite Coen flick.

>142. The Aviator- 242
I didn't like this movie much at all.

I had this at # 12. Possibly too high, but holy shit, this movie was amazing. I wonder if people didn't see it, didn't like it, or were just grossed out by it? I think it's brilliant.

>146. Borat- 240
This should definitely be higher. Maybe people were already tired of the character from the show? This is one of my favorites from recent years.

I didn't really consider this one. Star Wars and Empire would have made it if eligible.

>168. Almost Famous- 204
>169. Superbad- 203
Too low. I really enjoyed Almost Famous, and Superbad is yet another underrated comedy that makes me laugh my ass off.

>184. Capote- 182
Really? This was boring as fuck to me. Much like Zodiac.

>187. American Psycho- 178
Way too fucking low. What an amazing novel and movie as well.

>189. Naked Gun- 177
Crazy low, but perhaps the comedy hasn't aged well, since so many fucking stupid spoofs have tried to copy this style of humor (never doing it nearly as well, IMO).

the best flick by far of the best picture oscar noms in 2005 (crash, brokeback mountain, good night and good luck, capote) doesn't even make the top 200? ridiculous. should be top 50 minimum.

How 'bout rearranging the top 50, 100, or whatever to your liking? Obviously no adding titles that's not on the official list and leave off titles you haven't seen. For kicks.

25--- 26. The Princess Bride- 721
26--- 28. Se7en- 711
27--- 35. Heat- 619
28--- 9. The Big Lebowski- 1018
29--- 3. City of God- 1295
30--- 21. Batman Begins- 780

Those are the only ones that made my top 100.

31--- 15. Hoop Dreams- 845 (I just saw it last weekend - it should probably be higher but I don't want to have to redo my Top 100)

These got consideration for my list, but didn't make it:

32--- 46. The Lion King- 514 (honorable mention for me)
33--- 2. Do the Right Thing- 1851 (honorable mention)
34--- 38. Toy Story- 584 (honorable mention)
35--- 10. No Country For Old Men- 998 (almost made it)
36--- 45. Casino- 523 (got cut)
37--- 20. The Incredibles- 790 (got cut)
38--- 44. Pan’s Labyrinth- 529 (got cut)

Didn't even get consideration for my list:

39--- 41. Miller’s Crossing- 552 (good, but not THIS good)
40--- 43. Aliens- 544 (haven't seen it in so long it's hard to say)
41--- 31. Boogie Nights- 668 (see Miller's Crossing)
42--- 48. Anchorman- 501 (funny but very uneven - requires multiple viewings to really enjoy, which is a negative IMO)
43--- 18. Rushmore- 827 (liked it, but didn't get the hype - but it's been a long time)

And these I didn't really like very much:
44--- 30. Children of Men- 670 (not that great)
45--- 50. This is Spinal Tap- 499 (just saw it last weekend - not as good as advertised)
46--- 32. There Will Be Blood- 664 (great acting, SUPER boring and lame)
47--- 7. Fargo- 1170 (I didn't like it and couldn't finish it - which is REALLY rare for me - maybe I should give it another chance?)

I haven't seen these so they're not included:
5. Malcolm X- 1220 (yeah, I know - it's on my queue)
16. Unforgiven- 836
24. Schindler’s List- 751 (keep meaning to see, but I know it's gonna be a downer)
