"Underrated and Overlooked Films"
Thu Jan-01-04 08:06 PM by johnbook

Let's get a list going of films that have been underrated and overlooked (new or old, mainstream or obscure/"indie") that you think people should reconsider or just fucking consider.

if you missed these movies you've been missing out

Mine (for right now)

Once Upon A Time in the West-it's on DVD now. it looks beautiful, it's finally widescreen and it's Leone's best film. stop fucking around, seriously

Le Samourai-everyone talks about Bob Le Flambeur. This is Melville's best film. Criterion needs to stop bullshitting and buy the rights and do it properlike

Narc-how little buzz this film got is pitiful. One of the best cop flicks of all time

Station Agent-do what you have to do to see this film. i'm serious. it deserves as much success as Lost in Translation, if not moreso

La Haine - AMAZING French New Wave-esque film by Mathew Kassovitz (Gothika, actor in Amelie). It's a must see.

also overlooked is Kassovitz's previous film, Cafe au Lait (i don't think that's the title in France, though. is it "Mestizo" or something?)

i want to see his short Fierrot le pou... don't know what it's about the title alone is priceless

it's pretty good, though not ground-breaking in any way. It was made as part of an anti-AIDS campaign a few years back

just finished watching this about 30 minutes ago. I really don't know if could be considered overlooked or not, but I don't hear it mentioned very often...came accross it in the "people who rented this also liked:" portion of netflix.

This movie is insane and absolutely great. Every fan of Tarantino should see it. Some unbelievable killing scenes and completely over-the-top characters (#1 is one of the best characters of all time).

Though I just saw it I have to say that this is one of my all-time favorites so far (looking at my netflix queue there's a good chance that will change).

"I am the #1 killer!"

Once Upon A Time in the West should be in my next batch of netflix movies...i'm looking forward to it.

i blind bought it a year ago and it's one of my favorite DVDs. i try to show it to everyone i can.

jim jarmusch, john woo, and tarantino owe Suzuki majorlike for this one

far superior to Tokyo Drifter (although Drifter's climax is pretty fucking cool)

if you like this, check out Black Tight Killers which is not on the level of Suzuki's Branded but it is a fun little kooky 60s Japanese flick.

and i liked it a whole lot more than i ever did before. sure, Branded is probably better in numerous ways, but the compositions in Tokyo Drifter and the all-out wackiness... the singing and all that... something else!

oh yeah, i'm feeling Pistol Opera, too. i have no clue what it's about, though!

i couldn't even fuck with it

not even a little bit

at all

no

it really bored me to tears. and it was so ugly. shooting it on video or whatever they did totally disservice the film and the amazing visual elements that they did have.

i was so disappointed. i might check it out again. but on the initial run i was not pleased

god DAMN that film is beautiful to me!

i don't think it's video, but there is something slightly garish about the film stock... i think it worked, though. if that's video, i find that pretty damn encouraging that he could make it look so good!

but good lord. if you compare it to branded on a visual level it doesn't compare.
i liked what he wanted to do. i didn't like what he did

but a lot of Japanese films these days have that cheap look to 'em... i don't know what the deal is (maybe it has to do with the fact that a lot of Japanese films we're seeing these days are actually produced for television and straight-to-video eg Kiyoshi Kurosawa's stuff and a lot of Miike's).

the only people who are consistently cominng with it visually are Beat Takeshi, Higuchinsky (even though a lot of his shit is shot on video), Hiroyuki Nakano, Shinya Tsukamoto and Kasuhito Ishii

mostly i'm trying to watch shit from the 1960s and 70s... old Shohei Imamura flicks, Fukasaku's stuff, Yasuzo Masumura, and of course, Seijun Suzuki

currently, the Japan film industry is in a slump (as is Hong Kong) most people agree that the current hot spot for Asian film is South Korea, so that's what i've been digging

but as far as Japanese films go, you know me... i like visually stylish stuff. so that means Hiroyuki Nakano... we already discussed him in that Samurai Fiction post.

then there's Higuchinsky, perhaps the hottest and most innovative young Japanese director. he's made only 3 films: Uzumaki (which is a brooding Ringu-like horror film, Long Dream (a nice made-for-TV horror flick which is pretty damn good despite its obvious low budget) and Tokyo 10+1, a ultra-low budget DV flick that is kinda like Series 7 meets Battle Royale. it's not as good as the other two, but still worth a look. there's a dude that sells all 3 films together for about 30 bucks

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3369466660&category=617

let's see... who else do i like? of course there's Shinya Tsukamoto, who is kinda like a Japanese David Lynch, especially in his breakout film Tetsuo the Iron Man. he and Sogo Ishii represent the cyberpunk side of modern Japanese cinema. Netflix doesn't have Tetsuo, but they do have its sequel Body Hammer.

also, i mentioned Yasuzo Masumura above... i recommend his film Blind Beast. it was made in the late 60s, but it's still pretty powerful today

Kitano is a great filmmaker, and I've heard nothing but great things about his Zatoichi. All Miramax's acquisition means is that people are finally realizing how great he is and that they might make some money if they get on board.

but you gotta see Branded
it's like your first Tim Burton movie being Batman Forever or your first Matrix movie being Reloaded or the first porno you saw had Trannies in it.

i have a hard time getting into Drifter. The lead doesn't have the charisma of Joe Shisudo (emitting from his chipmunk cheeks) and it's just not as solid an effort. Branded is a far more out there but even though there are large chunks of it that border on total incoherence it is still an enjoyable flick.
for the cinemtagraphy alone it's a fun watch

Yeah and the keach's, Quaid's and Guest's. Walter Hill is a genius. Mynoriti dug it too.

>>The White Buffalo

Wild Bill (Charles Bronson) and Crazy Horse (Will Sampson aka the chief from one flew over the cuckoos nest) team up to hunt down a massive legendary white buffalo. The last scene is surreal as hell. Very strange movie.

>>Red Lion

Great, great samurai film starring Toshiro Mifune. He's incredible in it and it rivals the work he did with Kurosawa.

never noticed that. And the theme song is great. Avoid the official sequel, it's pretty bad. Desperado also owes a bit to Sabata starring Lee Van Cleef that has a character named Banjo. Banjo carries a Banjo with a rifle built into it. It's a pretty lighthearted movie but its a good watch.

>>Faster Pussycat Kill! Kill!

It's genius

One of the greatest films of the 70's. Warren Oates best performance. Also starring James Taylor, Dennis Wilson (drummer from the beach boys), and Laurie Bird. Directed by the great Monte Hellman. Extremely existential and one of the most unique films ever made.

Even though yall might be sick of Colin Farrell by now & Joel Schumacher has lost all credibility after the Batman sequels, trust me & give this one a shot.

BTW. I'm also a big fan of Narc. Jason Patric doesnt do a lot of movies but when he does he picks his roles carefully & him & Liotta are excellent in this film. Chi McBride & Busta Rhymes are good in it as well.

Here's some films that have been underrated and overlooked (either in real-life or just on this board):

The Tall T - directed by Budd Boetticher in 1957. Excellent western that starts out simple enough but then turns sinister. A robbery becomes a kidnapping and trouble ensues. Reasonably gritty film for its day. Randolph Scott is surprisingly likeable in the lead role. Also, the story for this one was written by Elmore Leonard.

Passage To Marseille - directed by Michael Curtiz in 1944. This is a film about a group of escaped convicts who suddenly find themselves fighting in a war. This is not a perfect film, but it has a lot to offer. It re-unites Curtiz with most of the cast of his impossibly famous "Casablanca". As always, Peter Lorre is the one to watch. Again, not a perfect film. But worth watching.

Mad Love - directed by Karl Freund in 1935. This is a truly bizarre film starring, once again, Peter Lorre. This is basically a mad scientist film. Lorre's character, Dr. Gogol, is in love with a woman. When her pianist husband's hands are crushed in an accident, Gogol replaces them with the hands of a murderer. The hands of the murderer are still filled with evil and a desire to kill. It's a completely ridiculous plot (and a plot that has been copied and repeated to no end ever since) but the great direction by Freund and the wild performance by Lorre make it worth watching.

Karl Freund, by the way, also directed "The Mummy" in 1932 but his best work was as a cinematographer. He was a great talent. He worked on Fritz Lang's classic "Metropolis", Tod Browning's "Dracula" (1931), John Huston's "Key Largo" and many others.

While The City Sleeps - directed by Fritz Lang in 1956. This is one of Fritz Lang's hard-boiled films from the 50s. It's about competitive reporters covering the story of a serial murderer and getting way too involved. Not as great as The Big Heat, or You Only Live Once, but still a very good film. Great direction and photography. Stars the generally underrated Dana Andrews and also features the very talented Ida Lupino in a smaller part.

That's all for now.

It's really good, Doc. Seriously. Budd Boetticher had such a great touch as a director. I don't think this one's out on DVD though. Might be hard to find. I saw it on TV.

But you'd like it I'm sure. It would be worth looking for. It's got some nice surprises, and it carries a really unsettling atmosphere with it. It's even got a little social commentary in there for good measure, but nothing too obvious.

Boetticher is highly underrated as a major directing talent of the last 100 years - I was privy to a complete retrospective of his work about 2 years back...

B/c most of his films were the minor title on double bills, the running time on the bulk of his work clocks in around 80 or so minutes (sometimes less)... Even w/ the time constraints, Boetticher was able to examine the tortured human condition of man who is neither good nor bad, lived through some turmoil and still pining for something better... The ambiguity of good and bad/evil residing in the same individual far more resonates w/ what 1 encounters in reality versus the hard-and-fast/black-and-white dichotomy championed by today's Hollywood...

So yeah, Budd Boetticher... Recommended... Unequivocally...

It's true. He needs a bit more attention directed his way. I would also say that people need to take another look at Anthony Mann, Henry King, and King Vidor.

Just thought I'd throw that in there.

Yes indeed. They make all the characters very obvious now. They're either bad or good. They make it real clear so we can get right to the sex and explosions! No dialogue either please.

It's a shame.

But you know there's certain elements (political elements if you will) who like to promote this kind of thinking in reality as well.

Like I was just watching this little documentary on that Steve Earle song "John Walker's Blues". All the right-wingers got so mad because Earle decided to paint this guy as a human being; a ball of confusion. But not just a "bad guy". Not just an evil traitor to his country.

They got mad because if he's not just pure evil, then there has to be a reason for why he did what he did. An explanation for how he turned out.

Then we'd have to look for answers. And that's hard.

It's much easier just to say something is evil. Because then you can just point your rockets and your guns at it and fire away. But you'll never understand anything.

Steve Earle is awesome, by the way.

Lantana-

Anthony Lapaglia and Geoffrey Rush reall turned in good performances. Has a number of twists in the plot. Though, it does start slow, but by the end the tension really builds. Worth a look.

The Red Violin-

Samuel L. Jackson in an arthouse joint! Traces the history of mysterious violin through the ages, exploring the different meanings it took on for it's various owners. I'm looking for the DVD like a mofo!

excellent movie----i've never heard this one being discussed, ever

one of the best movies about the darker side of power and influence of celebrities in entertainment here in the good ol' us of a, in this case the country music industry in the 70s....and everyone's out for self---the notion of what would fully blossom into the "me" generation of the 80s and beyond

while, all the while, making it look like a real chain of events-----almost like a documentary

it's funny as hell, yet not losing one ounce of seriousness--in the midst of the humor, the dismal account of all the characters' plots is always felt

Sankofa (1997)- Directed by Haile Gerima. Film tells the story of a woman named Mona who is transported back in time, back to the time of slavery, there she learns about her people's history. Thus she is able to move forward in life because of her new found knowledge of her ancestor's struggle.

Chameleon Street (1989)- Based from a true story about a guy named Douglas Street, who goes around impersonating characters, everything from a doctor to I believe a lawyer.

The Watermelon Man (1970)- Directed by Melvin Van Peebles, tells the tale of a middle class white man waking up one morning to find that he has turned black. Good satire.

Any Given Sunday (1999)- My favorite sports film, and one of the best ever made.

Life with Mikey (1993)- Stared Michael J Fox, film is about a child talent agent. This is one of my favorite films of all time.

Cemetery Man (1996)- Directed by Michele Soavi, Ruppert Everett stars. Film is about a caretaker of a cemetery (Everett) that must combat the constant threat of zombies.

People seem to think this is about Nazis and shit. It isn't. Its all about the paradox of Man, God, and their love of each other. Shit, one of them Nazis doesn't even exist except as the main character's id. Big existential metaphor that folks just pigeonhole into American History X pt. 2.

Oh, and Bringing out the Dead.

CITY OF GOD (THE most underrated film this year)

EVE'S BAYOU (A powerful epic with beautiful acting by an all Black cast, and some of the most tragic voodoo scenes. This movie was SOOOOOOOO underrated I was hurt by it!)

MUSA: WARRIOR (This was brilliantly done, and never released in the U.S..what a shame)

HERO (Another film not released in the US.)

ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA (This movie was pretty much overshadowed by the success of the movie Scarface the year before). But it's still a typical in-your-face bloody mobster flick that should've recieved more recognition.

I didn't know anything about this flick til this past weekend, because it was showing here at the cineplex. Then I saw it on a couple of Salon.com's reviewer's top ten list of 2003. It was beautiful. And those child actors could really act.

But yea, if you were like me, and didn't hear anything about it, it's a movie about an Irish couple and their two young daughters who move to America after losing their son to a brain tumor. They don't have enough money, so they have to live in pretty much a crackhouse in New York. Djimon Hounsou (sic, guy from Amistad) is one of their neighbors and puts in a great performance as well.

It was a shame that there were literally only five of us in the theater.

I still loved it though. But does not crying mean you didn't like it?

David Mamet should never be responsible for a movie under an R-Rating.

The whole time you could tell he was just dying to use one little 'fuck' in the script.

And this is another example (along with Grand Canyon) of how when Steve Martin isn't being funny, his acting is just terrible.
