"BEST OF 2003... Reviews' Forum, it's your turn"
Wed Dec-31-03 10:54 PM

Since The Lesson has been getting a number of Best Albums and videos lists, I would turn the focus to you. Janey already posted her list, so I figured I would create this anchored post.

I'll post a few topics, and you reply with your lists. If you feel a list needs to be added, go ahead.

as was Matrix unduly hated on. I believe they were the victims of action-movie-with-a-heart-backlash.

The Hulk was YET ANOTHER Ang Lee masterpiece, the second in a row where he took your preconceptions of what the movie was going to be, and kick the in the face, then made YOU say YOU were sorry. And he accepted your apology.

The Hulk had heart, not just emotion. It was a real internal struggle movie, and the best part to me about that was that it didn't skimp on the action, either. People claim that it was too slow in too many parts, but then they wanna turn around and talk about Matrix Reloaded having extraneous action scenes. The Hulk's action scenes MATTERED, they furthered the story. The scene where he fights the mutant dogs was one of the most amazing pieces of altogether filmaking this year from sound editing all the way down to how it affected the story. And don't get me started on the parental twist.

The Hulk was what a lot of people claim they wish action movies were.

I'm not sure about that.

I didn't see the Hulk or the Matrix...but 3 of the films people are saying were some of the best of the year, LOTR, Kill Bill, and Last Samurai, were all action driven films. Not sure there's any backlash going on there.

But the three current standouts are:

The Time of Our Singing, by Richard Powers;
Train, by Pete Dexter; and
The Fortress of Solitude, by Jonathan Lethem.

I'm sure more will come to me.

Ready for Revolution: Stokely Carmichael

*****-*-***** - *****-*****

Why did you run off secretly and deceive me? Why didn't you tell me, so I could send you away with joy and singing to the music?

The fool says in his heart,
"There is no God."

The revolution will not be televised/it will be waged and revised/by the principalities/to remove all falicies/so the truth can and will be known/have you now been shown? - the5philosopher

When you hear of wars and revolutions, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.

Come, I'll tear up all my poems
for just a little piece
of you...

aka the episode before the season finale. It was hard to single out one episode, but this one was great because it had three memorable confrontations: one between Omar and Stringer Bell, one between Sobotka and Ziggy, and one between Omar and Brother Mouzone. And I dare anyone to find a better and more telling exchange of dialogue than the following:

Sobotka: You're more like me than you know. You're a Sobotka.

Ziggy (teary-eyed): Fucked is what I am... What can I say?

And the theme of the season was conveyed with this line from Sobotka:

"You know what the trouble is, Brucey? We used to make shit in this country. Build shit. Now we just put our hand in the next guy's pocket."

And who can forget that final shot of Sobotka walking to his death? Just fantastic stuff.

In response to Reply # 6

From start to finish.

For the way the team was fragmented at the start, and how the show took its time putting it back together.

For Brother Mouzone.

For D'Angelo's redemption.

For the machinations of Stringer Bell, and the cool control of the incarcerated Avon Barksdale.

For that nutball Jimmy McNulty.

For Dominic West, a Brit acting like an American acting like a Brit for the undercover sting in the brothel ("Uh...spot...on... spot...spot on...you're late.")

For Ronnie's delicious gams.

For Kima, who still kicks much ass.

For Sobotka, Nicholas, Nicholas' girl (and her lovely set of...headlights), Ziggy, and "The Greek."

For Method Man ("Cheese"), who was willing to sacrifice a little bit of "street cred" to get another guy over.

For Brother Mouzone's first scene in the towers.

For Prop Joe.

For Bubbles.

For Bunk, Daniels, Lester, Rawls, Herc, Carver, Prez, Rawls and Valchek.

For Bodie, Poot, and Wee-Bey.

For the blind man.

For Ziggy's duck in the bar.

For David Simon, Ed Burns, George Pelecanos, and the other great writers of this show.

For the anger and frustration the creative team has with "the system," best shown in the montage at the end of the season set (ironically) to the song "I'm Feeling Alright."

And, finally,

For the Television Academy, who still hasn't taken its head out of its collective ass and at least NOMINATED this show for any major Emmys. What a shame.

Listen, The Sopranos is still the best show on TV, if only in terms of volume of quality episodes, but The Wire is gaining on it. Fast.

That needed to be on DVD, it's this one.

With commentary from David Simon and some of the stars.

I'd be willing to buy multiple copies for friends just to show them what they're missing.

The weeks before HBO also showed all the episodes of Season One. Looking back at the show, I have to say that having a regular 9 to 5 office job made me look at the chain of command bucking scenes throughout the first season a whole lot different. There was better than the action scenes in my opinion. Then again, that could be because I already know what's going to happen in the action based scenes.

Got hooked on The Wire after watching 1 complete episode. Cant get into Curb tho. Larry David annoys me as much as Jerry Seinfield. If I wanted 2 hear a whole bunch of complaining for a hour str8 I'd get married.

Sopranos. Only caught the last 2 or 3 episodes of The Wire this season but I've been lookin @ some of the older ones & I'm definitly on board for next season.

And I still love Crank Yankers & South Park as well. Reno 911 was kinda hit or miss on occasions. I've also heard good things about Line of Duty anyone else been checkin it out?

The Shield? Not saying its better because the Wire is more cerebral than the Shield, but I still think this show should at least get an honorable mention or two.

12. "The Roots - Bonnarroo (tied with their Halloween Show)"
In response to Reply # 9

Basically the same show, with pluses and minuses in the differences for both.

Bonnaroo had Scratch, which was a plus on a lot of songs (see: Panic, Next Movement), but his solo stuff at the very end of the show made it drag on like Akira. It also had countless people singing the hook to "Get By" so loudly that Thought didn't even bother. Now THAT's hot. It also had Cody.

Halloween at Vandy had, well, Kiss costumes. It also had no Scratch on any songs, but avoided the solo dragging at the end. The drum solos were moved up to earlier, which made the climax, Kamal's stuff and covers, an actual end to the show, which it really shoulda been.

Coldplay ain't bad either.

Specifically, House of Blues Anahem - Feb 2003.

Amazing, amazing show (minus Novel) - Skillz ripped it, Cody ripped it, The Roots tore the place down, built it back up, and tore it down again with a 3 hour performance. AMAZING.

I saw James Brown, G. Love and Special Sauce, and The Dirty Dozen Brass Band at the Florida Music and Film Festival. Goddamn. That's all I'll say. God. Damn.

24. "JB why cant there be seperate threads per topic?"
In response to Reply # 0

Cuz this shit is ridiculous. I have to wade through all these disparate post just to respond to something. This thread is going to be one big mess, especially for people responding to different topics. Why not just anchor seperate topics (ie: Comics, Videos, Albums etc.)

if we think any of this is worth archiving, it's best done as one thread.

It's not that hard, really.

Settle down.

I've seen The Revolution Will Not Be Televised and, while good, it doesn't touch Bus 174.

I'm eagerly awaiting the Fog of War but, Errol Morris notwithstanding, I can't believe that it would be possible for what is essentially an interview with McNamara to have the power and intensity of Bus 174.
