It's one thing to not have some artsy little indie movie in stock, but it's getting to the point that if it's not a big release from the last year or so, there's no guarantee they even stock it.

always has been. that place is straight uo anathema to me (and not just because i had a very unpleasant time working there back in the day)

one of the things that always offended me about Blockbuster was the freaking edited movies... i remember taking Bad Lieutenant home and they had cut the shit into ribbons.

yo SPM, if you don't want to commit $20 a month to Netflix, they got plan for as low as $5.99

but even apart from Netflix, there are other brick & mortar video stores to go to rather than Blockbuster (unfortunately, most of them are getting chewed up by Netflix, though)

we were in the knack of going every Monday night with my boy to pick out a few kids' videos. Then we got a stack of hand me downs at Christmas which we've been watching. Unfortunately most of them suck Elmo ass. (101 Dalmations is bad enough... but 102 Dalmations? Wifey reports that Baby Huey is the worst yet...)

But yeah - feature films are $1 for a week (a lot of libraries don't charge, I know) and everything else, inc. documentaries, is free. And selection isn't bad at all - they get most of the blockbusters, but will be more likely to stock artier flicks, though nothing too dirty.

they started this thing where you can get movies in the mail, and instead of putting those movies back in the mail to get the next one on your list mailed to you, you can take the movies to the store and use it as a coupon to get a free in-store rental (that usually aren't due for two weeks). and they mail you the new movie as soon as you turn one into the store, as opposed to a day later when they receive it at the warehouse. so basically, you can have six movies out at a time for $18 a month. it's almost impossible for you to not have something to watch at any given time.

to the selection online. for example, you get the obscure flicks/documentaries sent to you by mail, then you turn it into the store and get the new releases which are impossible to get online the first couple weeks. for example, i got this documentary "the ground truth" sent to me through the mail (couldn't find it in any rental stores), and when i finished watching it, i took it back to blockbuster and rented "crank" for free (would've been a two week wait online). if you know how to work the system, you can literally watch anything you want at any given time.

But those are just bonus freebies. Rent a mainstream movie, a game, an episode of the Wire, whatever. The other advantage is when you return them to the store, they scan them in the system, which gets your next online que'd movie sent immediately, as opposed to it being in the mail for two days, being recieved, then your next movie arriving two days later.

I've seen many people here say that they won't mess with BB because of they are the "evil empire", the big mean nasty company that doesn't care about its customers. Well, having had both Netflix and BB, the service I have received from BB has been 100 times better than what I got from Netflix.

Netflix used to hold up my rentals, taking 2 and 3 days to say they received a movie, when I sent it to a PO Box in the same city I lived in. Then they would take another 2 to 3 days to send out a new movie. And don't even mention the number of scratched or simply incorrect DVDs they would send me. And they charged my card twice in one month, and I had to go through hell and high water to find a phone number to talk to someone about it.

Whereas with BB, I've had none of these issues. Even before the new thing they do now, when I'd send movies back, they'd show them as received the next day, and I'd have a new movie within 2 days of sending back an old one. Now with the new service, I take movies to the store, trade in those for FREE in-store rentals, and by the time I get home, the BB website is showing my movies I just turned in at the store as being received, and my new movies are being shipped out that day, and are in my mailbox the next day. Netflix can't compete with that.

People know that BB is offering a superior service, and still choose to stick with Netflix, who has been proven to hold off delivery of DVDs to keep people from renting too many within a month. And all because they want to spite BB, the big, evil company......

>I've seen many people here say that they won't mess with BB

ummm... i haven't seen any of that in this thread.

>choose to stick with Netflix, who has been proven to hold off

nope.

i don't "know that BB is offering a superior service"

i mean, they might have stepped up their game recently but the brick & mortar store sucks... and when they first tried to get into the online game a few years ago, they did so in a deceptive manner that lead to massive lawsuits.

i guess this new deal they have might be pretty cool, but i personally am not interested in it. Netflix works fine for me. when i drop DVDs in the mailbox, they get them the next day (sometimes on the same day!) and i get my next DVD the day after that.

i guess it also depends on where you live and how close you are to a receiving station.

but i have little interest in checking out Blockbuster... and it's not because they're "the mainstream choice" or i want to "go against the grain."

at this point, Blockbuster is the one that's "against the grain" anyway.

in any case, i don't own stock in either company so i don't give a shit about anything except that i get to watch the movies i want when i want. go to any store or company you want... just don't insult me because of the service *I* choose to use.

>movies,etc

they offer different plans. you can pay about 10 bucks a month if you want to.

>and the whole mailing it back and forth thing seems like it
>would get old quick

and driving back and forth to blockbuster doesnt?

>where do u cats get ur movies from? blockbuster, hollywood, or
>netflix?

check out the plans they offer, its cheaper than you think.

and for those saying they dont want to wait 1 business day for the movie ot come in the mail, sign up for Blockbuster Online, which you can also pick up/drop off at the store if you cant wait 1-2 days for it to come in the mail.

use my free in-store rentals to get all the new releases, and use my online rentals to get older movies and those hard-to-find indie releases that they don't stock in the stores. Best of both worlds for only $17.99 a month.....

I have no idea what these Blue-Ray discs are, but they scare me a bit.

I'm looking at my DVD collection right now and hoping I don't have a future set of 8-track tapes.

No reason to, really. I understand people who wanna watch a movie TONIGHT or something like that...but for me, Netflix is where it's at. Yeah I know Blockbuster is offering quite a new plan, but I've been with Netflix over 3 years and I support them. I recently edited my queue to be all films I wanna watch at any given time (as opposed to 200 "extra" movies that I SHOULD see rather than WANTING to see) so I'm good whenever.

Go to Hollywood video or some local spot. They charge like a mofo at Blockbuster and their movie AND game selection is shitty. Not that I rent too often, but if I do, I stay away from Blockbuster. I heard that NetFlix shit is pretty good, though, but I don't know how I feel about having to mail shit and receive shit in the mail. They lost me with that whole late fee scam, talking about return it when you want. Yeah, untill I get a letter notifying me that I owed 40 dollars. Fuck blockbuster

Torrentspy.com or the infamous BGOL

the only movies I pay for are the ones that I want to see in the theater and/or support.

I had sworn off them forever, but the deal is just too damn good.

I'd say their online selection can compete with Netflix, though it isn't quite is good. close though.

My Netflix queue just grew and grew and DVDs sat in my living room for weeks on end.
Now I've watched as many movies over the past 2 months as I had all of last year. And honestly the in-store selection is better than I remember Blockbuster being in the past.

If you go to Blockbuster anyway there is no good reason not to sign up for this.

How about TV shows? Is there a pretty good selection of TV shows, as in, do they have everything Netlfix has? And is it one disc at a time or can you get the whole set?

I am considering this because there is a Blockbuster literally right across the street from me. It wouldn't take me more than 5 minutes to get a new movie and be back on my couch. I'm just worried about selection (I might just walk through the store soon to see what they have) and pricing. I'm on the 11.99 2-disc plan with Netflix right now and the Blockbuster one is 14.99 I think. I'd prefer not to go up in price, but I really don't want to go down to one disc either.

Also, do know any details on how this works for game rentals? I've had a 360 for about 4 months and only have 2 games for it (both basketball), I'd like to check Gears of War, Saints Row, etc. I think I saw they offer game rentals now but I don't know the specifics.

When you take the mailed movies back to blockbuster you cannot use them to rent games...only to rent more movies.

But they also have a print-out coupon at blockbuster.com (I think they give you 2 per month) that you can use for either Movies or Games.

I really don't know how thier tv show selection is. All I've rented from Wonderfalls, but its a pretty good indicator, it's not one of the most looked for shows and they still had it. The only thing I've had no luck with so far are some older, more obscure, foriegn movies...I don't think you'll run into much trouble with tv shows.

With a Blockbuster that close to you it'll be well worth it.

when i was in college i was living in a small town in PA (carlisle, if you know it, SPM) and junior year i discovered a local store (i think it was literally called "the video store" or something generic like that). the selection of movies was overall a little small, as it was a small store compared to blockbuster or hollywood video, but it had a lot of movies you wouldn't find in those chains. a lot of out of print stuff and some rare and bootleg movies (ken park, salo, the uncut caligula and cannibal holocaust). but their VHS horror selection was SICK. it was just full of '70s and '80s slasher films, shlock, gore, all kinds of obscure and foreign shit. i'd have rented there all the time if my school library didn't have free 24-hour rentals.
