"How can Studio 60 be so self-aware and still manage to be unfunny?"
Mon Oct-02-06 10:38 PM by Basaglia

the characters talk back and forth with such authority about what is and isn't funny and neither they nor their show are funny. that's fucking remarkable.

did dude just repeat cruise's today show rant over a year after it happened?

The show is not about THE (actual) SHOW, but what goes on behind THE (actual) SHOW. There is a difference. If it were about the actual show, we'd see more of THE SHOW. But in the three weeks that the show's aired, we've actually seen what, a grand total of 4 minutes of THE SHOW? In this regard, the material on THE SHOW -- and whether it's funny or not funny -- is almost irrelevant.

I think it's a problem because not only is it unfunny, but, as your say, it's beside the point. It's jarring to me for both of those reasons. I mean, I don't see how they could NOT include some of the show within the show material, but they should at least try and make it clever.

The point of the show isn't "let's watch them make this fake show then hope the show itself is funny." I know, it's only natural to watch and critique the little bits of the finished product that we see, but it's also so not the point.

Take tonight, for example (and I'm on the West Coast, so I'm only 33 minutes in). They just showed the actual show being broadcast for about, 20 seconds, then they cut immediately to Matt and Danny. They then ended the scene by cutting back to the actual show for another 15 seconds.

The point of the show is not "is the 'actual' show they're producing funny." It's fine to dislike the material that they present (in bits and pieces), but to say, "yo, the show they're making ain't funny, so therefore this show sucks" is a ridiculous leap in logic.

none of them are funny. none of the things they write are funny.

there is no evidence at all that their jobs depend on making people laugh.,

the weird part is that all of this goes for the real SNL too.

and the "drama" isn't interesting. give me back sportsnight.

That's beside the point as well. They're not there to make you laugh. Especially considering that the show is billed as a drama.

>there is no evidence at all that their jobs depend on making
>people laugh.,

They don't have to present that "evidence." They're actors playing people who just happen to be putting on a comedy show. The DRAMA comes in putting the show together, not whether or not they can make niggas at home LOL.

>and the "drama" isn't interesting.

So turn it off. Stop waiting for comedy on a dramatic show. Or better yet, wait for 30 Rock. Which is a comedy about a comedy show. This show is a drama about a comedy show. There is a difference.

but they should at least be funny at work...at their job...where they're paid to be funny. and they should be at least a LITTLE funny somewhere else, even if its by accident.

they're never ever ever funny, and show no potential to be. their existence has to be called into question by this. it makes it more clear that the dialogue isn't interesting and the character interactions are lacking.

at least if I liked them or found them entertaining, I could overlook some of that.

I disagree with this , except in some of the writing rooms bits.

Have you tried to be *funny* for 8 hours a day? It's impossible.

I think the best show to show a writing room has to be Larry Sanders, and that shows how *unfunny* the writer's room can be.

>they're never ever ever funny, and show no potential to be.
>their existence has to be called into question by this. it
>makes it more clear that the dialogue isn't interesting and

Has any sketch show *ever* been funny for longer than 3 years?? I think the point of the show is that the show is kind of unfunny. Maybe three sketches a show are funny. Think SNL, Kids, Fridays, Carol Burnet, etc. hell, MAd TV has never had more than one funny sketch in it's 10 year run. Maybe a few SNLs and SCTVs have beat the average.

I love the jab at Dave Thomas's writing literay writing style. Maybe mroe of an homage.

There's a concept in TV andd movies called "compression of time."

That means we don't see *everything* that happens.

Combine that with this show being a drama and you get why they aren't funny.

Oh, and another reason is: because that show wouldn't be funny either. let's face it The Daily Show and Colbert bat what 50% funny?

Even if you like SNL or mad TV they bat, what 25% funny?

I'm also pretty sure that The Daily Show and Colbert have writing staffs in the area of 50 poeple in each. This show is written mainly by one guy.

But I get it, you want the writers of a comedy show within a drama show to be funny.

I don't think this show is going to do it. Downlaod The larry Sanders shows, seasons 3-6. They are FUNNY.

if the plot is people with no talent making a show that sucks, then dude, the plot makes total sense, it's just not interesting.

however if the plot isn't supposed to be a bunch of talentless hacks joining together to make an entirely uninspired sketch comedy show, then they're doing a shit job of portraying it.

The plot is that characthers who care are trying to make a sketch comedy show that skewers the powers that be.

The opening song of last episode was lame. Tom Cruise jokes are lame. The news cast is lame.

It's that way on *ALL* sketch comedy shows.

The point of this show (IMHO) is the struggle to get a show on the air.

I'd prefer they don't show the sketches at all.

I like the exuctives and the behind the scenes stuff.

I have a feelign you'll liek the *comedy* show that the very unfunny Tina Fey is coming out with. You know, the one that ran a sketch comedy show for many years.

where did I ever give the impression I think SNL has been anything other than shit for a long time and that tina fey is funny?

the problem is, even on a drama, you have to include a wide range of situations and emotions.

I don't give a shit about supposedly funny writers who are being crushed by the man, because they never show me how funny they are outside the realm of the show. I have on reason to believe they are skilled at their profession, which kills the shows plot.

these fucks like bignick and zootown are too busy saying "this is representing our world, mein kampf" to realize the show is shit.

At around the 46 minute mark of the episode, they did a 2-minute montage on the show. They didn't show an entire sketch. They breezed through the show in order to get to the next scene, which was not on the show, but after the show, at the afterparty. And notice, they didn't pay off Harriet's lame joke pitch about the bear. If this were a show that were concerned with the comedic content of the actual show, we would have seen her try that joke, on the air.

Aaron Sorkin's forte isn't sketch comedy, and anyone tuning in to see whether or not he or any of the actors can be "funny" is being silly and not really paying attention.

the actors on it can be funny. It's BESIDE THE POINT. They're not there to present evidence to you that they're funny, even if every line of dialogue during the episode consists solely of: "yo, I'm funny, I'm really really funny."

As a matter of fact, one of the main sources of dramatic conflict so far has been Matt and Danny's dissing of the other "hack" comedy team, who have been pitching sketches and jokes only to be met with cold indifference by Matt and Danny. Hardly the stuff of great comedy, no?

The only way you could even begin to make an equal comparison is if you saw Omar, McNulty and company at a shooting range every week. And anyway, The Wire is more than just a show about shooting and killing. Much like Studio 60 is more than a show about comedy.

This really shouldn't be this hard to understand.

>the show would have still made sense?

I'm not going to answer this. You're just looking for an argument.

Surprise, surprise.

>I never watched west wing, but I'm going to go out on a limb
>and suppose the president occasionally tried to appear...like
>a politician.

That's probably because the show The West Wing was about... the people in front of and behind the scenes of politics. Just like Studio 60 is a show about... the people in front of and behind the scenes of a show.

Do you understand the similarities, or are you going to continue pulling more examples out of thin air just to keep the argument going?

>you know.
>since that was allegedly his job.
>that he did everyday.
>and the whole show was based on it.

You know. Matt and Danny are writers. That's their jobs. They do it every day. And the whole show is based on it. In addition to their interactions with the cast, the crew, the executives, and each other. The show's not about the material that they produce.

Do you understand the difference, or are you going to now cite Hill Street Blues and Miami Vice as examples of "cops who did their jobs everyday. Cause, you know, they're cops. They shoot people. That's what they do."

>so....at least on a script in front of them, there should be

Do you actually know what they do? They're called show runners. They have more than a responsiblity to the show to just be funny -- and/or show us that they can be funny.

>if they worked at a nuclear plant, and there was no
>radioactive material, I doubt you would defend its absence by
>saying "well it's not really about motherfuckers getting

I would if that's what the show were about. Once more, this show -- not The Wire or some other random bullshit example you conjure up -- *is not about Matt and Danny's occupation*. It's about their *relationships* with every single person on that show. It's not about them being funny, or showing you that they can pitch jokes, or that they can write funny shit. For the life of me, I can't understand why you can't seem to get that through your head.

We were told in the pilot that these guys were former writers on the show and that they were coming back to run it. That's it. We heard about one (1) sketch they wrote that didn't air. We didn't hear any jokes from it. We didn't see it. We just know that they're good comedy writers. That's all we need to go on, *especially if we're not going to see any lengthy sketches of theirs during the show.*

You don't like the characters. That's fine. You don't like the show because the banter *not relating directly to the show itself* is boring and unfunny. That's fine. You don't like the show because "they're not being funny." That's not fine. And frankly, it's a rather retarded reason to watch because it shows you don't really understand what the show's about.

>I'm going to go watch days of thunder and edit out everything
>that has to do with driving, brb.

You would. Then come back and pull another example out of your ass just to keep an argument going.

you probably make a joke or three offstage. or rehearse jokes that would be funny if performed. or something.

all you should do is have empty relationships with your your similarly disaffected coworkers that go nowhere and carry no relevance. didn't you get the memo?

it's a DRAMA. that means it doesn't matter that the characters give you zero reason to care about them.

the show has very few "funny" moments period....shit, i can watch LOST or The Wire and laugh more than i do at things THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO BE FUNNY on this show...

...i don't think it's reaching to expect a "drama" about a comedy show to actually be funny at some point...but i figure it'll get better later....

these people lack the skills to do the jobs they allegedly have, but according to zootown, we have no need to see them doing.

luckily, this is a show about relationships. you know, like Fashion House.

may have you somewhat confused in regard to the meaning of the term "relationships," so I figured I'd break them down for your dense ass:

Matt and Danny have a *professional* relationship, as well as a *personal* one. That means they're friends. Sorry for you, Reg, no homo.

Matt used to have a *personal* relationship with Harriet. That means they used to date, and have sex. I hope you know what sex is, Reg, because unfortunately, that's how you got here. Anyway, Matt and Harriet talk about their relationship all the time, btw. And now, since Matt and Danny have been brought back to run the show, Matt is now Harriet's boss. That means that they have a *professional* relationship.

Jordan has a *professional* relationship with Matt and Danny, since she was the one who hired them back to run the show. There have been hints that Danny could be interested in Jordan, and vice versa, but so far, there is no *personal* relationship.

See? This is what "relationships" means, Reg. You do know that people do have different kinds of relationships, right?

You and I have a relationship because of these boards. Yes, we do, no homo. Because you keep typing ignorant, half-logical posts in order to start arguments that go absolutely nowhere, and I keep responding to them.

>these people lack the skills to do the jobs they allegedly
>have, but according to zootown, we have no need to see them
>doing.

Stop putting words in my mouth, you stupid son of a bitch. What you want to see is a group of rollicking cats cracking jokes all day and "being funny" so you can LMAO, and because, for some reason (possibly because you were dumb enough to fall for the NBC promos) you believe that this is what the show is supposed to be about. What I'm telling you, and have been telling your stupid, dense, ignorant ass for the last 15 or so posts is that's not what the show is about. Then you continue by presenting examples from crime dramas, as if the comparisons are apt. They're not.

>luckily, this is a show about relationships. you know, like
>Fashion House.

No homo, Reg. No homo.

IT'S A DRAMA.

other dramas need interesting characters.....but not this show

I really feel as tho bunk's constantly investigating crimes is taking away from the wire.

i mean, i don't want to to see him do his job, they need to explore the relationships between the characters more.

they shouldn't show omar robbing anyone. just show him fucking his boyfriends and people running from him on the street. done.

I had low expectations on that end. What I want out of the show, and what I'm not sure I'm getting, is to be able to watch how a show like SNL really works. So far, it isn't doesn't feel right in that regard. But I'll admit I don't have a lot of knowledge to compare Studio 60 against, since I was only a cast member on SNL for a relatively short time. (I'm Melanie Hutzel.)

> since I was only a cast member on SNL for a relatively short time. (I'm Melanie Hutzel.)

Did Siobhan Fallon's feet stink really bad? She looked like the type who'd have poor foot hygiene.

Did Beth Cahill always walk around and do that devastatingly hilarious "I am from Chicago" accent? That was priceless! I bet she did, and I bet you all could not stop laughing very hard at it! Then I bet she'd do it some more! I know I would! Exclamation!

SNL Producer Lorne Michaels is known for giving nick names to his favorite cast members, very often coining a term that describe a person's contribution to the show. For instance, he often referred to Phil Hartman as "the glue" of SNL, meaning he held the show together. He labeled Will Ferrell his "go-to guy" due to his ability to always win the audience over no matter how bad a sketch was doing. How did you respond to Lorne alternately referring to you as "sketch killer", "woefully untalented hopelessly unfunny", "THE FUCK was I thinking?" and "the mistake"?

This is your "cast photo" from the 1994-95 season. How have you changed since? http://whyquit.com/whyquit/vonBehrens_big.jpg

You've been ranked alongside some of the legendary talents to appear on SNL: Terry Sweeney, Ann Risley, Gary Kroeger, etc. And your looks have been compared to such photogenic SNLers as: Brad and Rich Hall. I guess the question is this: How have you managed the immense pressure that goes with being hailed as "the Denny Dillon of our generation"?

Was it hard for you, as a female cast member in a boy's club, to compete for airtime? The male cast members, all of whom were far more talented than you in all aspects of comedy, as well as the female cast members, all of whom were far more talented than you in all aspects of comedy, as well as the musical guests, all of whom were far more talented than you in all aspects of comedy, GE Smith and the Saturday Night Live band, all of whom were far more talented than you in all aspects of comedy (even that monkey looking dude!), not to mention the teamster set builders, all of whom were far more talented than you in all aspects of comedy, and former-yet-still-constantly-reappearing-cast-member Jon Lovitz, who you are far more talented than in all aspects of comedy save the spit take, seemed to take away from your spotlight. I don't think we ever got to see your diverse comedic range of playing: sorority chicks, ugly chicks, ugly sorority chicks, dumb ugly sorority chicks, sorority chicks who are dumb and not-so-good looking, and Tori Spelling. Where, when, and in what are we going to see you appear next, and what will be on other channels so we can all cover our bases?

The show's supposed to be about the conflict inherent in putting together a television show, period. Sorkin chose a sketch show because the conflict keeps shifting; by which I mean that the characters on the show can be drawn into arguments about where the show is going without being able to hide behind "well, my character would NEVER do that." "What's funny" is more open than "what's my character"; If it was a drama about making a cop show or sitcom, the fights amongst the characters would get old REALLY fast.

this show does TRY to be funny. for 60 minutes, all the fuck they talk about is what is and isn't funny, each character trying to one up the other with every lame ass retort.

again my QUESTION was: how can that show be so SELF-AWARE and STILL manage to not be funny.

and you gonna sit here and tell me that's not the point of the show, LIKE THAT WAS MY FUCKING QUESTION IN THE FIRST PLACE?

i don't give a shit was the plot is...they are ATTEMPTING to generate humor...and we know this with every fucking line of dialogue, in both delivery and content.

stupid faggots. so pressed to argue some shit and defend that wack ass show, you can't even focus on the basic point of this thread.

It's really simple. If you don't dig the show, don't watch it. If you don't like the characters, don't watch it. If you don't think any of it is "funny," don't watch it. Go back to looking up dirt on white athletes.

And had you actually paid attention to how the thread unfolded, instead of scanning the posts then later coming back like you were rescuing some shit, you would have seen that the actually discussion didn't really jump off in response to your question, it was to mine. I answered the question, which, again, wasn't related to your initial question/opinion, then the resident genius Reggie decided to add his two cents by pulling examples of crime dramas out of his ass. No way I could let that shit slide.

You're the one harping on how bad the show is, yet you're still watching it.

Talk about pathetic.

And now, I'm apparently "illiterate," yet am still able to write fictionary drama tales and shit.

Anything I write (fiction or no) doesn't cancel out the fact that you're still a dumb bitch who craves attention. Stick to stuff you know about, like cop shows and Halo 2.

Are they supposed to show you that they can tell jokes? Do you want to see completed sketches? Are they supposed to make you laugh? Or is it simply that the "white humor" isn't funny to you? If so, this is something you should have spouted out in the first place. My brother.

The point is, the show's not about the comedy. If that were the case, don't you think we would see more comedy?

And sorry that their (non-show) banter isn't "LOL, nigga!"-enough for you and that mental midget/X-Box aficionado Reggie. Go watch something else.

1. they do show us that they can tell jokes...the jokes just aren't funny.

2. the sketches aren't the point. at this point, i have no choice but to think you aren't as smart as you think you are, because everyone has told your dumb ass the sketches don't even have to be shown for the show to be funny. the problem is they talk up the idea of comedy as if they have a firm handle on it, yet their attempts at humor are lame as fuck...from the writers to the performers...all attempts at comedy within or without the context of their fake SNL-show is pathetic.

Or is it simply that the "white humor" isn't funny
>to you? If so, this is something you should have spouted out
>in the first place.

this is a show of a character that should've remained hidden. obviously, all you read are my racial sports postings, the ones that upset you so much that you have yet to realize i love "white humor"

>The fucking show isn't about "executing comedy." They're not
>showing you complete fucking comedy sketches *because the
>show's not about showing you completed fucking comedy
>sketches*.

tell me something i don't know.

however, if you're going to talk about what is and isn't funny, you should at least show you are capable of displaying the former somewhere in the midst of your many displays of the latter.

"Everyone," as in you and Reggie? Wow, you sure convinced me. What's "funny" is there are other posters who talked about the show's "wit." Hmm, guess they're not watching the same show as you, huh?

And I'm smarter than you would like to believe, you bitch. Insulting my intelligence isn't going to help you make your "point" any clearer. Got it? Good.

No, I'm actually quite amused by your "racial sports postings." They don't upset me at all. Contrary to what you may believe, you don't mean that much to my life.

I only brought up race because, let's face it, that's what you're known for. (Well, that and battling Quez in The Lesson). Or do Frank and Zeno and others in Sports just make up mock racial sports posts because they're bored? Don't start copping "I make more than racial posts" pleas now, motherfucker.

In any event, I figured I'd take a page out of your playbook and make a logical leap. But I guess it failed, because I'm not as smart as I think I am. I'm shole is stupid, praise be to Allah and Dipset.

>however, if your going to talk about what is and isn't funny,

Why do I have to prove to you motherfuckers how funny I am? What the fuck does that have to do with anything? It'd be different had I said, "you niggas don't know comedy, I know comedy." Get the fuck outta here with that lame "Zootown, you ain't funny" bullshit, b.

So, let's summarize, before I'm called a dumb ass again by a cat who takes regular Ls on other boards:

Bags finds the show (which has aired 3 episodes, btw) unfunny and filled with untalented and unfunny actors who are supposed to be comedic geniuses. Cool.

I'm telling you to find another show. There's nothing particularly funny or "smart" about that suggestion. Common sense usually doesn't have to be.

"the characters talk back and forth with such authority about what is and isn't funny and neither they nor their show are funny. that's fucking remarkable."
-Basaglia, post 1.

So, this isn't the same thing as what I typed? I know, silly, it's not the exact same wording, DUH, but it's not the same sentiment?

"answer the question...why can they talk comedy, yet not execute it?"
-Bags, asking what appears to be a rhetorical question, post 76.

Well, 3 episodes in, we can speculate on why they can't "execute comedy," (Aaron Sorkin, who's known as a dramatic writer, doesn't have comedians on his staff -- save D.L. Hughley -- and even if he did have comedy writers on his staff it wouldn't matter, since he writes all the scripts anyway) but it seems to be working for some (who appreciate the show's wit and whatnot).

In response to Reply # 0

I'm talking about when they portray the "live and on air" scenes, when they choose to do so. That is unless they're trying to portray a bad sketch.

Either that, or the sketches are supposed to be bad and the ratings go up anyway. In that case, maybe that's Sorkin's commentary on the type of audience Studio 60 pulls in. I doubt it though.

But yeah, the Tom Cruise impersonation wasn't funny.

It's only the second episode though, so maybe the SKETCHES will start getting funny. Like it's already been said though, it's a drama primarily, and that's primarily what I'm watching it for.

Just because there's a bunch of "comedians" on a show doesn't mean the shit is going to be funny. Plenty of comics are renowed dullards in person. Adam Sandler, Lenny Bruce was said to be unbearable. I'm sure there are more examples. Comedian is there job.

I'm a Auditor, I don't pay that close attention everywhere I go, it's a skill I've honed and I know when and how to turn it on and off.

besides the show IS funny. It's a dark/cerebral humor, but it is humorous, especially Matthew Perry's character. I think it's just not the brand of humor y'all are looking for.

I can only speak for myself, and what I was trying to say is that the rehearsal stuff and the comedians discussing their jokes make for dull, uninspired television. That's all. I was making no criticism of the show as a whole, that's what I meant by the "funny" parts being jarring.
