"The Tales of an Intern: An Ongoing Saga"

I plan on upping this whenever I see fit. For all of you intending on getting into the entertainment industry, you will almost ALWAYS have to intern somewhere. My reccomendation? Intern somewhere with WORTH, with a NAME, something. If you intern (as I did in college) at a no-name, bedroom run "production" company, it's a waste of time and energy. Plus I mean, they can't pay the people "working" for them so how they can they offer you a job?

My Story:

I graduated film school in June of 2005. After months of getting no bites on my resume (after countless changes and tweaks), I hit up LA411.com and blindly faxed out 45 resumes to music video/commercial production companies. The one that called me back was A Band Apart, the production company responsible for Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill, and numerous music videos and commercials.

The Story As Of Now:

A Band Apart wanted me to join as an intern. I graciously accepted. If nothing else, it was experience in a field I am desperate to get into (MUSIC VIDEOS), and a name to attach to my resume. Today (April 25th) was my first day. Needless to say, I love the environment of the office (despite it being slow right now) and the people who work there. Infinitely better than my first internship. Basically, today I familiarized myself with the A Band Apart directors material on their reels (as if I'm not versed on John Landis' material. I watched his reel anyway cause it had the full length Thriller video on it), such as Michael Palmieri, Coodie and Chike, etc. There's still other reels for me to get through...Steve Buscemi, Andy Dick, Darren Aronofski, McG, and others...but so far, so good. Also, I helped clean up "The Bullpen", basically a "Boiler Room" of sorts for when productions go on (barebones room of desks and phones to work off of).

Oh, and there was the running all over town. I live just out of Los Angeles County. I love it cause it's a safe, low-key town with NO traffic, but is only a short distance from the madness that is LA/Hollywood. Today I got to re-familiarize myself with Los Angeles, running around from storage center to restaurant to frame store to Beverly Hills library. I'm working for free (right now), but I'm enjoying it. I like DOING something. I like working toward something. And really, you can't beat doing runs around LA if you relax from the traffic with an iPod plugged in in the car and the window down. The weather is just getting better and so far, so good.

Anyway, I'll be upping this regardless of replies, simply because I think it'll be of value to our up and coming film students/ambitious career searchers. Feel free to ask any questions, and I will answer them as best and as honestly as I can. That's all for now.

From what I hear, 4 others. Today I worked as the only intern though.

>Is the script for Inglorious Bastards on a pedastal and the
>size of the Oxford English Dictionary?

Hahahah. No. In fact I dropped like 15 pieces of mail addressed to Quentin Tarantino in the mailbox today. People send stuff to him at A Band Apart and, well...he never comes in there. Plus I'm in the music video/commercial department, and if there is a script for Inglorious Bastards one day (we all know it doesn't exist yet), it'd be over at Lawrence Bender Productions (the same company, just different offices) down the street.

>Are you going to do actual work beyond courier shit?

A lot of script reading, office assistant type work. Oh and a lot of shadowing of the people in the office, getting a feel for what they do and if I want any part of it as a career (yes, I do).

Sounds like what I'll be doing this fall. Apparently the big studios don't have the insurance to send their interns off-lot though.

Many of their employees start off interning there?

In some ways, yes. As I get more comfortable, I'll say why...but you never know who's reading, and I never know what's alright to say.

>Many of their employees start off interning there?

All of them. One of the main reasons I took the internship.

secondly, in response to the above, are you saying that a film degree means very little in you getting the internship? cause while i may be switching into film next school year, i really just wnat to be in the industry in a way that doesnt include actually making films.

does a company like "a band apart" hire interns based on any perticulars? or is it kinda luck of the draw?

First: Thanks, I will.

>secondly, in response to the above, are you saying that a
>film degree means very little in you getting the internship?

I'm in a unique position at ABA. I am the only intern there NOT in school. I'm not sure if that's an advantage or a disadvantage, although I'd learn toward the former since they know I'm not doing this for school credit and so I'm serious about it. What I meant though was that the degree won't really open doors for you unless you go to one of the big 33 or 4 film schools (USC, NYU, AFI, UCLA) because those are names people recognize AND more importantly, past alumni hire alumni.

If you go to one of the many film schools that are NOT those schools, then...well, you're on your own. Not to say a person from AFI will not have to work for their job - THEY WILL - but it's a bit better on a resume is all. Really, it comes down to who you know and the work you do.

>cause while i may be switching into film next school year, i
>really just wnat to be in the industry in a way that doesnt
>include actually making films.

How so? Production office? You might not even know yet but I'm interested in hearing what you'd like to do.

>does a company like "a band apart" hire interns based on any
>perticulars? or is it kinda luck of the draw?

You know, I really don't know how they do it. Availability helps, that's for sure. My schedule = WIDE OPEN. Basically my foot got in the door there and now it's time to take advantage.

17. "WEEK 2: Running Around Los Angeles"
In response to Reply # 0

So, it's been slow. Very slow. One job is going on in Uruguay and so there isn't a whole hell of a lot to do. As I believe I said earlier, I'm familiarizing myself with LA/Santa Monica/Hollywood. I know my way around, but now I REALLY know my way around. It's cool when you relax rather than focus on the traffic.

So basically this week has been fill in the gaps type busy work, which is cool because I'm trying to let them know that I don't mind such stuff. I try to be in early, leave late, and ask everyone in the office if they need something before I take off. Real cool people there. Very nice and personable. Of course, I'm sure it's more stressful when jobs are going on, but everyone is way cool so I know it'll be alright.

Today I did a bunch of runs around LA...picking up a birthday cake for a director coming in, going to the grocery store, picking up office supplies at Office Depot, etc. Sorry there isn't more interesting things to report, but really...it's a slow period and I'm a new intern. What else would they have me do? Take heed, future interns: You will need to let go of any sort of ego prior to taking one of these or else you'll go crazy. If I had an ego, I'd be like, "Yo I graduated film school and already DID an internship, the hell do I have to organize a file cabinet for?" - but have this attitude coming in:

It is an investment in your future. Show em you'll do anything, ANYTHING. Because if you do work like that for free, they'll certainly want to hire you if something becomes available.

I know this sounds common sense. But I've had to remind myself of it throughout the 3 days I've been there, and will certainly have to do it much more. I don't have an ego, and I don't mind doing what I do, but it's frustrating sometimes to be in my situation of having literally no money and having to do stuff like this in order to maybe get a job.

Anyway, hopefully it'll pick up soon. Once it does, things will get more interesting.

Unfortunately, I drive a 4-Runner. Still, they pay decently for the mileage (I'd rather not say how much, but it more than covers it). I wish I had a company car in those little ass side streets in Hollywood, haha.

'Cause it would really suck if you had to pay for the gas (what is it down there, $3.50/gal?) on top of not getting paid, invaluable experience or not.

>Unfortunately, I drive a 4-Runner.

Yeah...I bought an SUV earlier this year, albeit a smaller one than a 4-runner. It doesn't get terribly low mileage, but compared to the compact car I had before, it sucks. And with the gas prices the way they are, I kinda wish I'd shelled out a little more for a hybrid. lol

Okay, so today I did a (real fun and funny) shoot for Vehix.com and put in 9 hours. My boss is really cool but he said something at the end of the day...

"Are you down for tomorrow?" "Sure", I respond. "Good, as long as you're having fun and I get a voucher", he says. WTF? Does that imply that I am not getting paid? I'm not on the call list either and I am still waiting to get paid for three weeks ago.

Don't get the wrong impression, I love this work and my boss is a fucking badass but the "payment plans" are killing me. I'm not fretting though because I will probaly (hopefully) be working as a PA for Real World: Denver (two weeks?) and I have another shoot on Monday.

I guess I'm just peeved because I'm broke and I know I can make great money when *they* want me too. I'm going to address the situation tomorrow, any advice?

On a sidenote, craft services is bad. The food is so good that it really is hard to resist gobbling it all up and becoming a fat ass mofo. I ate some killer Chinese chicken salad and hella 7-layer dip today.

I ended up making 200 $ for two days of work this weekend and I made another 87 $ by carrying flats for 6 hours. Overall, everything was good and my boss was pretty chill. I also will be doing more scene construction work in the future because today's boss really liked me. We carried a 20x15' flat across town and instead of crap services we ate some dank bbq at the Breckenridge Brewery (Fat Tire?).

Unfortunately, things are slow over at ABA. Today I read a terrible, terrible feature script called Zombie Safari (the title suggests that it is much better than it truly is) and watched 2 terrible low budget horror films people sent in (not that being low budget is bad, but yo...make a good horror film, please?). Other than that, it was a day of watching Once Upon A Time In Mexico and Three Amigos (there's a whole lot of DVDs there, some property of ABA, some that people bring in). Oh and I went and got sushi for a few people too.

Once again, love the atmosphere and the people are way cool...but I wish it would pick up so I could learn some stuff.

Im enjoying keeping tabs on this stuff, intresting to see the "other side" of the industry.

Question, and you dont have to answer if you don't want to, but since you are working for free how are you manageing to pay bills, eat, etc.?

Are you working another job on the side?

Honestly, I don't have TOO many bills (cellphone, health/dental insurance, credit card which only has like $150 on it)...up until this point I've been living off savings from past jobs, plus picking up DJ gigs along the way and winning money playing poker (haha, but yeah...true story). Now that I'm pretty far down in terms of money, my parents are offering to help me out, plus I have an awesome girlfriend who insists on buying me lunch or drinks or whatever when we go out. So in short, I have great people in my life and after my savings are gone, then they will be there to help me until I'm getting paid (within reason, of course).

I live at home too, which helps....gas is killer though.

It has to be one page. Should I really bother to throw my part-time retail job on it. Writing film related stuff is the only non-school experience I have, is that a decent asset?
Any other tips?

Depends. Does it have some skills you might be able to embellish? Does it show you've worked there for a long time? I might consider it...I used my corporate job (mortgage collections) because I worked there for 3.5 years and it showed I had tons of phone/data entry experience.

Depends what. Details please. If it's personal stuff, then...probably not.

Change your resume to cater to the job itself. I change my resume ALMOST every job I apply to.

Don't expect much on the first 10-20 resumes. Yeah it's harsh but it's worth it.

Well it's 5 years at the same place, I could bullshit some kind of abilities it entailed.

Well, it's connected through my school and a former student has some pull, so I'm really competing with the 6 other folks heading down. New Line is locked, but I'd prefer a smaller company.

Thanks

That's a great start man, 5 years shows committment and dedication to one place, especially if you're in school.

>Published, campus paper.

Another EXCELLENT thing to throw on a resume. It's not professional writing experience, but it again shows dedication to something you love.

I feel ya...the small company vibe at ABA is great. The bigger feeling over at GSN isn't as cool, but I highly suggest both. New Line is a good start too (even though they didn't take me on as an intern a year ago or so, but I'll give em a pass). Compete and give a great, conversational type interview so they know you'll fit in with the place and you'll be straight.

Game Show Network - PA Intern for the show Playmania (on 10pm-12am PST, 1am-3am EST). So far it's cool. I work there M, W, F and get paid minimum wage which definitely helps out in terms of gas. It's a live show, so getting a PA job for a live TV show is gonna help my resume for sure. I started today, and my schedule looks like this for the week:

M: 2pm - 7pm
W: On Call (Dependent on what needs to be shot)
F: 6pm - 12am (yes, this one sucks, but since the show is taped from 10pm - 12am, I get valuable live show experience)

I'm not sure if I'll stay there past the end of June (all dependent upon how I like the place/people/job), but it's yet another thing to add to the resume. I'm a professional intern right now ya'll.

Work has been steady lately on both the PA and Carpentor tips. Yeah, I'm both now and I am making that money. It's hard work and the hours are long BUT it is fun and really neat. Today we built a frame for a super expensive projector on the set of a local news station and we worked more on the set of a Dish Network commercial; we made a 4o-foot table, a mock gallery and styrofoam flats. I was also officially told I will be working on a Food Network show filming in Denver beginning in August. DOPE! In this business it is hard to find steady and paying work, I have. I continue to work for the props people and the set design people.

I really like who I work with and what I do. I have made tons of great contacts and have rapidly climbed through the hierarchy of TVdom in just a few short months. A year from now will be insane, I'll probaly be making hella (more) bank due to being more experienced. TV is the shit....if you have a connect already in the business. If you're going in "blind" I wish you luck.

Oh yeah, I'm now a part of a crew. I'll be working non-stop, having tons of fun and doing real neat stuff.

Always respect your superiors and thier orders.

Always show up when you're asked to.

Always, work quick and stay running.

Always introduce yourself to crew members you don't know. Contacts and connects are your life.

Pay attention to detail.

Always hire good workers. Cutting costs isn't always worth it!

Not frustration with the jobs, but frustration with the lack of money and seemingly no job offer in sight. I know I have to go through this, but after 2 parking tickets (obviously my fault, but just one of those things you'd just be a little pissed about if you had a job - not worried cause it drains your available funds) and a month of working nearly full time with no income, it's tough. I'm trying to stay positive though, and I couldn't like the atmposhere at ABA any more than I do.

GSN, on the other hand, is a little stuffy...the people are nice, but I'm not sure I'd want to work there. The show I'm on is low budget and so it's not likely to pay me a whole heck of a lot if they WERE to offer me a job. The good news is it's only 6 more weeks there at most and they love me so it's a great addition to my resume. I'm keeping at it, it's tough but it's gotta pay off I guess.

....I made some stellar contacts and stepped-up from being a PA to a carpentor's apprentice/laborer. I construct scenes, props and what-not now, and the hours are alot more stable because I'm working for the go-to set builder in CO. Isht is fun work too because it is challenging, you're constantly learning and invading shoots.

I also made two HUGE contacts. One was with a director I've worked with a few times before and the other was with the guy that owns/operates/contracts work out of the biggest and most respected studio here in CO.

Movin' on up...

52. "Week 6: A Very Sudden Twist Ending"
In response to Reply # 0

Today, the office manager called in sick...but before he did, he called my cell phone to ask if I could fill in for him. What I found out at the end of the day was that they were paying me a daily rate to do it (totally unexpected and awesome). This is, unfortunately, not the surprise ending the subject promised.

At the end of the day, after a very long and trying day on the phones/managing basic office stuff (more on this later), I was informed that Lawrence Bender, Quentin Tarantino's (and many other people's) superproducer, pulled the plug on the Commercial/Music Video department of A Band Apart at about 6:30PM PST. It wasn't a SURPRISE to a lot of people working there and in the know as they knew things had been rocky for awhile, but it was a shock that it was so sudden. I was the last intern left for the day so nobody else found out (plus I was a psuedo-employee for day as well), so I got the lowdown from some of the people in the company. All of them expressed their condolences to which I was like, "Don't even start to feel bad for me...you guys work here and are left with nothing. At least I wasn't getting paid."

I mean, you got dudes with wives/kids, rent, new cars, etc. I live rent free with very little bills. I can't even imagine. Luckily everyone there liked me (mutual, for sure...cool ass people) so they gave me mad business cards, emails, cell #s...I got contacts for days from all sides (music videos, commercials, office manager, assistants, vault manager), I'm covered. But still, it was heartbreaking to see what effect that had on people. It sucks to lose this thing for sure, as I loved the place and the people...but everything happens for a reason, and now I'm freed up by the end of June (GSN internship goes till then) rather than July to find a job, plus I'm happy I didn't get hired on a sinking ship.

But all the same, it's messed up.

That sucks BUT you did get those contacts out of it all, so that is all that matters. Where are you going from here? If anything, it sucks that people lost their jobs but one way or another it opens up the marketplace for you, it's all about competetition. Be strong and move forward and please keep us posted.

The other young dude (well, he's a bit older than me) I work with at my shop/production office calls me up today and asks if I'd be down to intern three days a week on a movie, being shot out here in Denver, through July 4th. I jumped at the oppurtunity then realized I'd be internning....not working! Fuck it though, I can and will sacrifice three days a week to make some connects. Also, they said, if paying work pops upon internning days I can skip the film and make that skrilla. All in all not a bad deal, I hope!

Work is becoming more and more steady and my really good friend is now in television, I helped him break through. We're doing carpentor work and he is starting to PA hustle on the side. A production crew (the one I'm internning for) is renting his POS car for a week so I feel real good because I brought him in and his girl just gave birth to their first child.

Isht is fun and I have a few projects planned. I'll keep you all informed as much as I can and am allowed to. Big things!

So as ya'll know, I've been at GSN. It's cool despite messed up hours. They actually need me full time for my last 2 weeks there (this week and next...I'm done at the end of June), so my schedule looks something like:

T - 9am - 6pm
W - 9am - 6pm
Th - 3pm - 12am
F - 3pm - 12am
S - 3pm - 12am

Kinda wacky but whatever. I used to only be there 15-20 hours a week so this is obviously different, but in taking over for someone who had to leave for occupational therapy (she had a stroke), I get a totally different view of the place. The people are super cool. Although I'm doing "customer service" work for them - basically handling customer/winner complaints and stuff. Not out of my realm; I worked in Customer Service for years. In addition to that, I'm making games in Photoshop for them and keeping up the game databases. For the most part, it's easy...but that only adds up to 2-3 hours of work a day. So really I just sit at a computer a bunch.

Yesterday was kinda cool...Bil Dwyer (I've Got A Secret, a bunch of VH1 Specials) was in the studio shooting some live insets for an IGAS marathon and co-hosting a segment of the show I work on. It's funny, when he comes around...our craft services are Quiznos, vegetables, and beer. Usually...it's a veggie plate, some licorice, candy, some drinks, and cookies. Haha. Really it's not bad at all though, I mean the show is only 2 hours so you can't expect a meal or anything.

Anyway, it's been fun, but after tonight I only have 1 week left...and then it's off to bigger and better things. I hope.

A friend of mine was a digital media major and literally got plucked out of Otis Art School in LA to be a music video/commercial director (yeah, I know). He signed his contract before walking the graduation stage and has a studio set up for him and his 2 partners out in Santa Monica. Life's okay for him.

So I really don't know how it goes for anyone else.

if you PA'd on a porn set in the valley....would that help/hurt/make no difference on your career in terms of advancement and landing a full time paid gig doing whatever it is that you want to do in Hollywood?

like, is that some shit you'd actually leave out of your resume if applying somewhere in Hollywood?

Well, having gone to school in the valley...I know of people who've taken jobs in porn for side money. Typically it's not something you promote in the industry (I'm told), even so far as people using psuedonyms just to edit an adult film. A friend of mine was looking into editing for a porn production company but decided against it - so I assume that it's something that COULD hurt your career.

My tv series work got pushed back a few months, I quit internning on the movie (I've been way too busy), the carpentor work is fun as fuck and the horrendous hours pay off with huge checks. I am more comfortable in the shop, the atmosphere is very light and fun. I am working a ton because I'm willing to work. YOU HAVE TO BE RELIABLE!
My homie and I are making moves by doing odd jobs for people in the industry; we're getting our names and hard-working reps out there. YOU NEED TO!

You can make money so easily in this business. My homie rented his car out to a production company...the return was great!

So I left GSN on July 1st and since I have had a few things going, including being a runner for a company that is producing the King Kong special edition DVD. That paid nicely and kept me in business and I've had some success elsewhere too, but unfortunately, the steady JOB search has been slow.

At least until the last few weeks. I've had more interviews/calls for interviews since the beginning of August than I've had since I've been out of school. I opted to branch out; to not limit myself to music videos/commercials. Tomorrow I have a 2nd interview at a production company, and I've had numerous interviews at a bunch of different places. Things have really picked up in the industry as a whole so the interviews have picked up.

Hopefully this time tomorrow I'll have a job.

Work has been steady. I made a few key connects with a production design company in NYC, on a job. I also picked up work as a CA with another NYC cat and I will be assisting an Uptown Manhattan DP on a doc this fall. Work rules but the long hours and deranged scheduling is beginning to wear thin on me...

Yeah as of tomorrow I join the ranks of the EMPLOYED. Jesus, it's been a long time but I finally got something and I'm stoked. Room for advancement, decent pay, and I got a day off for an out of town (VEGAS) trip I have coming up Labor Day weekend. Thanks for all the well wishes throughout this crazy post.

... I been calling all kinds of contacts from old and shit, just sort of preliminary poking around. I can't move away to do this just yet. I got some money I need to save and some personal business to attend to. But hopefully in 6 months or so, I can start seriously persuing my triumphant return. lol

Glad to hear things are lookin up for you.
Maybe you are the one that will hire ME. lol

I just finished my first week on the job. It's tough...and grunt work, but it's a step in the right direction. I'm meeting cool people, learning a good amount, and I'm just happy to be where I'm at. I have no idea where this will lead, but it's good to be on track. Really, I thank you all for all the support and advice throughout my search for a job, internships, etc. Your advice has definitely helped (I'm specifically talking to those who've worked/are working in the industry...aka ZooTown, DawgEatah, REDeye, JReynolds, among others) and it was really cool to have a "support system" so to speak.

Enough sappy shit though...time to get paid!

Thanks guys,

Ryan.

The time to start looking for a job is right after you get one.

Don't wait until this job is over, or until you feel you've learned everything you can from it. Every day, everything you do, everyone you meet, that could your ticket to the next job. Build, build, build.

Eh, but I'm sure you'll be great.
