When Blanchett won her award. He makes all these actors stand out so that it just seems "easy". All that other shit is mechanical and the Academy only wants to reward that. Like that sweaty "hustle" guy who throws cheap fouls, yells in a pickup game, calls himself a rebounding machine and only puts up a 2-3 line. That is "Dances with Wolves" right there.

Of course they call that black top magician "Goodfellas" a once in a decade player. And everybody's embarrassed by the history of giving it to Costner. But that won't stop them from doing it again.

see them. There's a reason why The Aviator practically swept all the technical awards but only got one performance award, while Million Dollar Baby got the performance awards and Best Picture. The Academy will ALWAYS value heart over cold technique. The Lord of the Rings one last year not just because it was technically skilled and well-made, but because the performances were heartfelt. Call it old, or corny if you like, but that's how it is.

They're always pushing their gay agenda, especially through 9 1/2 hour sci-fi epics... that's why it won Best Picture last year, all of the gay subtext. And the CGI.

in Return of the King when Sam carries Frodo to safety near the end. Nothing. You can call it corny, hokey, whatever, but it was a heartfelt moment. Meanwhile, in The Aviator, you get Leo pissing in bottles. Okay. There was nothing moving in that movie.

Cause that motherfucker was naked longer than 2 minutes, dude. No homo.

And yeah, the 3 1/2 hours of the movie was all Frodo and Sam. Forget those other guys and the battles and stuff. It was all homoerotic subtext. Fuckin' subversive Hollywood. Next you'll be claiming John Waters was the actual 2nd Unit director, and Bruce Villanch punched up all the Frodo/Sam scenes... no homo.

Yeah, the scene was longer than 2 minutes, but his on-screen nudity was less than that. Not that I was clocking it, lol.

What's with all the no homo-ing?

1. Marty made the better film.

2. Marty has the better film career Yeah, this shouldn't matter...but let's be real. It does. People act like Clint Eastwood is some amazing director who touches a script and it turns to gold (Unforgiven, Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby), but forget he made such films as Blood Work and Firefox. IMO there's no such thing as a bad Scorsese film...just ones that aren't as good as Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, and Raging Bull. The Aviator happens to be one of his good ones, but obviously not in the elite.

3. Clint has already won before. Are the people in the Academy just coldhearted or something? Cause we already know they don't neccessarily vote on the film itself...

4. How classless was Eastwood? He didn't even acknowledge Marty. A simple acknowledgment woulda been fine...not some "I dont deserve this" type thing but a "I feel honored to be nominated with Martin Scorsese" or SOMETHING.

5. Marty made the better movie.

That was 10 years ago, they might just have short memories.

I dunno. Maybe I'm just salty on it all. I do think with this history behind the whole thing, or when someone has so much hype around them to win, someone mentioning the one nominee who really narrowed it to a 2 person race is classy. I'm sure Bill Murray woulda done it last year if he won for Sean Penn. I guess when someone is SNUBBED (and this isn't really even opinion at this point is it? It's almost taken as fact that Scorsese should have won 3 times now) over so many years with such great films and loses...again...with a film that was worthy of winning (IE NOT Gangs of New York), it's semi-classless to not mention it.

Just my opinion though.

If I didn't like Scorsese, I might not feel the same way.

Matt Damon, Leo, and Nicholson, who's an Academy darling. But it's too soon to say about awards, considering it hasn't even been shot yet.

and get it for a gritty movie. Infernal Affairs will be more like the movies he made his name with than Aviator was.

And I can't see how people can say Marty got snubbed. Gangs of NY and Aviator didn't even deserve nominations, let alone Oscars.

This wasn't '80 when he got beat by a very good but still inferior film in "Ordinary People", let alone the theft that was the year he lost to Costner (the Academy's hard on for actors-turned-directors knows no limits).

"Million Dollar Baby" was a great film. Clint erved to win as much as any other film.

Now, you could say that Scorsese should have won for all the times he's been passed over previously. I just don't subscribe to this line of thinking. Yeah, it sucks that he got robbed a few times, but giving him an Oscar for a different film, decades later, is a retarded way to make it up to him, and unfair to those also in contention.

Clint Eastwood having already won for "Unforgiven" shouldn't matter. It's about who they feel was the best director that year. If someone directs the best one 10 years in a row, they should be awared 10 Oscars.

Then again, as a film, I didn't think The Aviator was all that strong, so maybe my opinion is in the minority. I'd like to see Marty get back to making smaller scale pictures instead of these big epics that, though technically fantastic, have been dull and uninteresting from a narrative perspective.

co-sign. i did enjoy the aviator, but i don't feel like i walked out of that movie caring one way or another about the main character. his dream was interesting though, and i thought he got kind of a raw deal. but i thought million dollar baby was just more heartfelt. the characters all around were just much more interesting to me.

good film. Unforgiven was a great film. There's the difference. One is deserving, the other isn't. Million was sappy, syruppy nonsense. Not even as good as Finding Neverland, which was a far more meaningful film.

>good film.

I'd say a very very good film bordering on great, but the true test of a film's greatness, for me anyway, is how it stands the test of time. So it'll be easier to evaluate Million Dollar Baby in five years.

> Unforgiven was a great film. There's the
>difference. One is deserving, the other isn't.

But they weren't up against each other. Considering what it was up against, Million Dollar Baby was as deserving as any of the other films. A case could be made for Hotel Rwanda and Ray, but is either significantly better than Million Dollar Baby? I sure don't think so. So it's not a robbery or anything.

> Million was
>sappy, syruppy nonsense. Not even as good as Finding
>Neverland, which was a far more meaningful film.

C'mon. Finding Neverland? You being serious? It was a touching little film I guess, but it ain't anything special either.

In Fade In (a really good film mag btw) they had an article with Michael Mann, who was the one who brought the script to Marty. He loved it and acted like it was pretty well regarded. I thought it was meandering, at best.

The infernal affairs remake, if its half-way good, will win it.

I am glad he didn't get the Oscar for it. I love Scorcese, but I don't think you can give a guy an award based on his career and not the film he's nominated for. Besides, which would you rather have, Hillary Swank's Oscars or Martin Scorcese's career?
