you REALLY believe that he should be "proud" of this?

i mean, i'm not saying that he should be *ashamed*... i understand the game (c) Badu and i appreciate the kid's hustle to do whatever he can to get exposure

but even when we do what we gotta do, we're able to make the distinction between work you do just to be working and have your face out there... and shit that you can be *proud* of

well... that distinction USED to be present, anyway. these days, it seems that as long as you're on TV, it's something you're supposed to be proud of.

also, do we think that appearing on this show will lend any kind of longterm credibility to his career as a rapper OR as an actor?

(no disrespect to scoma on any of this, btw... just kicking some thoughts around)

was gonna use him as an example

i'm sure Brad was happy as hell when he got that chicken job, but i doubt he was calling people in his hometown to look at him making progress as a working actor, and that shit got dropped off the resume as soon as soon as humanly possible.

i just question this culture of ours where ANY kind of momentary fame is considered a good thing... but i guess that's why there's never any shortage of people willing to humiliate themselves on reality shows (again: i'm not saying that Trends humiliated himself, but... you know)

I can probally see where your coming from looking on the outside in where you would wonder why someone would be proud of this because lets face it, it is a silly show, but you have to remember that this is show business. I am a starving independent artist doing my thing. I dont have an agent or manager and I get all of my jobs by grinding real hard by myself. This isnt the first thing i've done. Check my bio on my myspace page www.myspace.com/trendsitakks

There were nights that i would only get 1 or 2 hours of sleep because i was either recording songs, sending out press kits, calling people sending out head shots etc.

For this show I didnt even send them my info. They told me they found me-lol.

The hard work is paying off.

Thats why i'm proud

I mean, even if just to fool everyone, finally get on camera, and say to New York, "...bitch, no one likes you," then bounce?

If you have an opportunity to be televised to the world, be it for money, fame, or just to make a statement, I say fucking do it.

By the way, now that you kicked it with her, what did Flav see in her to keep her around on the 1st season and bring her back the 2nd season? I was in jail for the 2nd season, and we were all sure it was the pootie-tang, as she described it

Anything you say can and will be used against you on OKP

You have the right to do a search for my "defenses of shitty TV shows," as certain OKP herbs have put it

You also have the right to see which hit dogs see this and feel compelled to respond, then witness me get in their asses (no homo)

I can't speak for the others here, but considering my previous "spirited" defenses and unabashed support of shows like Flavor of Love 2 (ask Young H and layzboi in GD), you're pretty much off, holmes. So keep your apology short and sweet.

>Flavor of Love 2 (TV): "Coon" watchers be damned, I enjoy watching this show. It's really not that serious, people. Let William Drayton get that bread, he has kids to feed.

- Me, talking about "this kind of show," from the August 13, 2006 edition of "What Did You Watch This Week?"

how the hell am i coming off as a hoe?

i made it pretty clear that i'm not disrespecting Trendz and i said i respect his hustle

but at the same time, i DO have some serious questions about this contemporary culture in which people struggle to achieve fame by any means, no matter how trivial the means might be

in the past, people were famous because they sang good, or ran fast, or spoke well... because they DID something admirable.

now folks are getting famous for getting caught sucking dick on camera or spitting in someone's face on TV

i watched Flavor in Love 1 & 2... i watch Surreal Life... i'm watching I LOve New York... i'm into all that shit, but let's be real: does ANYbody take it seriously?

my question was: Trendz says he's a rapper/actor/model... appart from a few months of reality show fame, does being on this show REALLY help his career?

would YOU take a rapper seriously after he's been on a show like this? has ANYBODY had a successful acting career based off of reality show fame? even the modelling thing... Hoopz got a few months in which she was hot on the Black men's mag circuit, but does anybody remember her now?

In response to Reply # 58

i was trying to compile a list of people who have had significant success in their careers after appearing on a reality show

i was away from the scene at the time, so i don't know exactly what the trajectory of Winick's career was... did he get *really* famous off of "Me and Pedro" or was it his other work? and to what extent was "The Real World" used to promote his work? (by the time i took notice of him, he seemed to be seriously trying to play down his MTV connection)

plus, at the time that he (and Heather B and Kevin Powell) were on "The Real World," reality TV had not yet mushroomed into the all-American freak show that it is now. the show was almost a "documentary" at that point.

but i think that it's particularly tough for actors to be taken seriously after being on reality shows... because what reality shows do is turn you into demi-celebrity for being "yourself" (or the "character" the producers/editors create for you)

so it's hard to see this "character" acting as someone else... every time they appear on screen trying to play a cop or a lovesick dancer in Paris or a Roman centurion, the entire audience guffaws "hey, that's the dude from Reality Show X!"

If it was Survivor or something higher profile, then I'd say people tend to get more recognition from that. But not enough people watch Flavor of Love to make it something that REALLY gets your career going.

I'd say being on a reality show can help your modelling career in theory, if you work the extra publicity right. It makes it so people see who you are, see you (hopefully) on several episodes, and it makes more than just Wannabe Model #74 in an audition process. Granted, that bubble of extra recognition might be limited, which is why you capitalize on it, get some good gigs, shake some hands... it could be an in.

I think there's no way to become a credible rapper off of being a reality show contestant. No way.

And being an actor... ehhhhhh. Dude would have to show a MAGNETIC personality, would have to be given a somewhat-high-profile acting gig, knock that role out of the park, and again get the ball rolling from there. But I'd reckon it's a good deal easier to get modeling gigs from reality show "fame" than it is to get serious acting gigs.

at this point, i don't think so...

and even then, who has come off "Survivor" and been successful? Richard Hatch?

that girl who was in a Rob Schneider movie and then disappeared? what was her name again? Colleen, right?

In response to Reply # 74

They just wanted some paper.

The ones that do...yeah, there was that Colleen chick, and she got a high-profile gig and woulda kept it going had her acting not been really really terrible. Richard Hatch did his thing. I think now it definitely is lower profile, but it shows the potential for reality stars to at least have a window of opportunity to cross over.

See, I think the problem is that very few if any of the people that go on these shows have the talent/work ethic to overcome the "reality show" crutch. I mean, if you're going onto a reality show in the first place to get money/fame, odds are you're lookin for that shit to come QUICK, so the work ethic maybe isn't up to what you need it to be in order to capitalize on your appearance after the fact.

Someone should do a study of this-- every reality TV contestant and what they pursued after the show and how successful they were if that pursuit is showbiz.

i think that's barely a step above being in a reality show, anyway!

but yeah, you're totally on-point with the issue of talent/work ethic... and the thing is that even if you DO have the talent and drive, being on a reality show creates the impression that you DON'T.

but i think there have been a couple of TV specials tracking down past reality stars and how their showbiz careers are coming along... most of them seemed to live in a coccoon of extreme denial, but some realized that it was probably never going to get much better than travelling around the country making appearances at clubs and car shows.

It may be unkind to include someone like Kevin Powell, but him as well.

Hoopz became an even more notable video hoe after her own stint.

I think a couple of Real World people also jumped into the soap opera world.

Plus, there's money on the college speaking circuit.

i'm not gonna include Kevin Powell, though... because i think we're talking primarily about folks who try to go into acting and music based off of reality shows (modelling too)

i haven't seen Hoopz in any music videos recently, but i've probably not been watching the right kind of music videos

i didn't know any "Real World" folks had gotten into soaps, but even then... isn't that like half a step up from being waitstaff?

You'd have to ask Sarah Michelle Gellar or Eva Longoria, but, on the whole, yes, I'd figure it's still not where many who would quest for fame would wanna peak.

I thought of a couple more "success stories" though.

Gay dude from Amazing Race dated Lance Bass.

Jenna Lewis had a sex tape.

Tami (Real World) married Kenny Anderson (NBA) and got his $$$ upon divorce.

Kristin from Laguna Beach might still be US Weekly-famous.

Then there's Eric Nies.

Plus, now the reality TV circuit has become its own universe. You make it to the Real World, then to a string of Real World "duels", then to a speaking tour about the Real World, then to a show on E! about your time on the Real World. Finally, you die twenty years down the line, with an empty feeling in your stomach and a photograph of the time you took a shit on national television as your obituary picture.

But I watch this garbage too, so I don't know if that makes me an accomplice or some kind of pervert or both.

In response to Reply # 88

Jacinda Barrett from RW London has probably the best RW career. Kyle from RW Chicago is on a soap opera. Teck (Hawaii) has done some acting.

But almost every actor I know stays away from reality TV because it isn't the exposure you want. A lot of people get sucked into these shows expecting something to come out of it but it rarely happens.

Most of the RW/RR people who come out here work as bartenders.

there have been several Survivor contestants (and contestants of other reality shows) that were pursuing acting careers before doing reality shows, hoped that the shows would help their careers, and are still trying to be actors post-reality show but are having a hard time.

any actor who wants to be taken remotely seriously as an actor knows better than to do a reality show. it's a *very* long shot that you can parlay that into a successful career as a working actor. that being said, Michael's mother on The Wire was on "Who Wants to be a Soap Star" a few years ago.

I see what your saying. I feel the same way to a point. People are famous now a days just for dumb shit. Hell paris hilton is famous just because she's rich.

There are acually films and projects that i turned down because either i thought was too stupid or just too crazy or some crazy shit happened.

for example i got an offer to star in this independent film. I would have got 10,000 for two weeks or work. I turned it down because the director told me that i would have to do some gay shit in the movie and on top of that this nigga tried to come on to me-wtf( im not going to say what movie or the director cause i dont want to blow up anyones spot)

I was like wtf. I couldnt fuck with this.

The audition was fun though. I did a scene in a hot tub naked with two girls. They videotaped that shit so somewhere there is a Trends video with me fucking with some chicks in a hot tub(this was not a porno movie by the way-lol)

Also the part where you was saying would anyone take a rapper seriously on a show like this all depends on how good he/she is. I'm dope as fuck check my shit www.myspace.com/trendsitakks

you're telling me that you turned down a part in an independent film (and you're sorta suggesting that it might have been by a director that we've possibly heard of) because it would have required you to ACT as a gay guy... but you were MUCH more comfortable doing VH1's "Celebreality" line?

i dunno, man... that's kinda weird to me.

or ever attempted to make a living as a actor you would know any kind of action is few and far between and you wouldnt be so judgemental

yeah no serious actor would ever consider doing something like this

but then lots of serious actors lose roles nowadays to rappers and reality stars a good friend of my lost a deoderent commercial to the black guy from survivor

i think its real easy to hate on from side lines and in this case its almost a sport

all i'm saying is that i understand that sometimes you got to do some thangs in order to eat, or get some exposure. but i can NOT subscribe to this contemporary idea that as long as you are on TV it's a good thing, and you're making "progress."

it's like... i don't hate on, disrespect or judge girls who might have to sell a little pussy in order to make ends meet... i understand it.

but do i necessarily think that it's something they should be PROUD of?

and i know it's a harsh analogy... i'm not trying to compare reality shows to prostitution - though a case COULD be made for that - and i'm not saying that Trendz should be ashamed of this.

but i have to admit that i always shake my head in wonderment at how the same people who are quick to defend stuff like this will dis legitimate actors like Cuba Gooding and Wayne Brady... or look down on old-time performers like Stepin Fetchit, Mantan Moreland and Willie "Sleep N Eat" Best, when their work was MUCH more benign than the pornographic coon cages of reality TV

(i apologize for the "coon" reference... i hate applying that term to anybody, even more than the N-word, but i stole the "pornographic coon cages" thing from Stanley Crouch... i just felt the strong desire to work that phrase into this post)

Not because it was too coonish, but he did not want to put school aside for three weeks. I guess they saw him on Elimidate and wanted him on the show. However he did say after watching it he is glad he did not pursue it. It would have been funny because we both went to high school with another cat on the show.

Hey Scoma/Trends what did you think about New York calling you crispy and burnt toast?

Isn't that ironic considering Flava Flav and you have similiar complexions.

Also you can tell us the truth - You were really there to promote your music-LOL!

why does everyone have to describe him as crispy?

Is that cool in 2007? Yes he is dark but is it really that big of a deal or is that the easiest way to insult him - Hahahaha you're very dark. I don't get it.

All that stuff she said was just to boost ratings and shock people and make them laugh. Also I think she wanted to make fun of me because i was so non-chanlant about giving out my music. They have a clip of her and me on the Vspot on vh1.com where she was saying that she thought my breath was stinking. The funny thing is that there is alot that went down that they didnt show and I dont want to mention because of contract issues. I just want yall to know that i'm loving every minute of this. This is great exposure. I had a lot of fun. More people are checking my music and buying my cds more than they ever had in the past.

Off the record new york was feeling me she's a good actress but shes not that good. Theres so much stuff i wish i could tell you that happened that never went on air which will lead to the real reason why she was trying to diss me.I'll give you a little example of our relationship that they didnt show. I'll just use the example of when two little kids are in the playground and one little kid hits the other because she likes him but the little kid that gets hit doesnt even pay her any mind and then she gets mad throws a fit and tells everyone else not to play with him because he is a stupid head

but WHY go on her show, if U weren't feelin' her? I know U R a rapper, & R trying 2 promote your career, but I think the point of the show is supposed 2 B 4 dudes 2 try 2 get 2 know NY? If U were that saavy, and adept at promoting your career, if U guys were kickin' it off-air, as U've implied in this post, then it seems U would have riden that pony(pun intended) further along in the process, 2 capitalize fully on the opportunity. Particularly if she was feelin' U, which I would have expected that she would, since she obviously likes really dark men...or at least really dark men from legendary rap groups. LOL!

from what ive seen in this post, nobody is hating on dude for being on TV, hell even i'm gonna tell my friends "that dude posts on that board i tell yall about" when the show comes on...

but cmon. EVERY LAST ONE of them mofoes on that show is a model/actor/singer/rapper/dancer or whatever that got set up on that show via an agent or some audition process...give them props for getting that far, but them dudes ain't gonna "make it" in their fields...not a ONE of em. even the dude who WINS will have a career hosting parties and doing guest appearances for a few years...

and stop acting like everybody on these boards is making 9 dollars a week posting from the public library. there are people on here earning a decent living via their education and hard "boring" work, fuck a hustle...
