"The Official Borat Post"

So I saw a sneak preview tonight.

After the first 5 minutes, I knew I was in for a treat.

By the turning point of the film (which for the love of God no one should spoil), I was head over heels.

Fearless comedy with totally committed actors and a production value that is absolutely seamless.

If you don't laugh at this movie, you are not human.

I would be happy to discuss spoilers below with others who have seen sneak previews (I know you're out there), but PLEASE do not spoil bits of this film without warning. This is the type of movie where the less you've seen and heard, the harder you'll laugh. All I'd seen was the trailer, and all I'd heard about was the turning point scene (which will indubitably be much talked about). So DO NOT SPOIL.

This is the official post. Sneak previews, reviews, everything.

Come celebrate at the altar of who will undoubtedly be the next big thing for comedy in America, Sacha Baron Cohen. He's about to blow up in a way he likely never expected.

They make fun of Premier Bush once or twice, but there isn't too much overt political message at all.

The satire is more on the social aspects of America, and less on the political climate.

************************** SPOILER **********************************

There is a whopper of a joke about 9/11 however. It brought a mixture of uncontrollable laughter and awkward silence and moans in my theater.

being blatant.

(I've also seen the movie)

MILD SPOILER WARNING

I say it's subversive mainly in the way it exposes and makes fun of so-called "Bible Belt" values (the dinner and rodeo scenes are particularly nasty), the very same values that our current president espoused and helped to get him (re)elected.

END OF MILD SPOILER WARNING

Otherwise, yes, I agree, the political humor is not on the surface. Maybe political's the wrong word to use?

As far as box office goes, I believe the true barometer of its success will be... wait for it...

... whether or not your man GLC will want to go see it. Hopefully he'll let us know next week...

it wasn't that good.

it wasn't HYSTERICAL or the internet nerd's favorite "LOL".

it was OKAY.

under an hour and a half I would think the material they chose would be top notch, however, it seems like it was scraps and the best clips will be on the DVD.

I'll admit, "the turning point" scene was unspeakable shocking humor, but I was still expecting non-stop laughter

don't believe the hype, I was fooled too.

was a decent good flick. slowed down towards the end. but still a good laugh. the glue that held the scenes together were the slow parts but still grand.

i know some people that go to usc, and the girl i know is friends with a lot of chi psis, and i think she was telling me a story this summer about how those dudes were in the borat movie, and yes, they were drunk, but they were purposefully playing off of borat, and exaggerating... maybe. because i honestly wouldn't put that behavior past usc frat boys.

Pamela Anderson had to be in on it, right? Cohen must have told her before hand, "Hey, I'm going to show up and try to kidnap you." Otherwise, movie or not, she would pressed charges. Maybe the security wsn't in on it, she HAD to be.

Just based on the fact that there was another Borat/Anderson incident that made some papers:

From The Sunday Telegraph, August 28, 2005:

THE satirical actor who plays Ali G was dunked in the sea by Pamela Anderson's bodyguards -- after rugby-tackling the actress at her dogs' wedding in Malibu.

Actor Sacha Baron Cohen was dressed as his other creation, Kazakhstani TV journalist Borat, when he pulled the stunt. Cohen, 33, in swimming trunks and a leather jacket, emerged from the surf on an inflatable turtle.

From The Globe and Mail, August 27, 2005:

Sometimes they are merely odd. I confess when I read that Sacha Baron Cohen, known to a portion of the idle world as Ali G and Borat (allegedly Kazakhstani television's top media personality), gatecrashed the "wedding" on a Malibu beach of Pamela Anderson's two dogs - her golden retriever Star was tying the knot with her chihuahua Luca - I thought that perhaps the tabloids were having a bit of sport. Apparently not.

The wedding was real, in so far as real can be said to preserve a pulse of meaning in such contexts. A crowd was in attendance. There were pictures.

Borat stormed the wedding on the beach via an inflatable sea turtle, which must have given the ex-icon of Baywatch a tinge of nostalgia. Pneumatics were a motif of Baywatch during Ms. Anderson's tenure. But then he proceeded to "rugby-tackle" the white-gowned Ms. Anderson, who was "officiating" at the ceremony - whether giving away the "bride," solemnizing the occasion, or merely offering hints for the honeymoon, it is not clear - moving her bodyguards to grab the rash vandal and toss him back in the tony waters off the Mailbu coast.

I'm not willing to believe that there was another incident between these two and Cohen shows up in character and Anderson just happens to be in a wedding dress. And then she lets him tackle her? I'm not sure whether this happened before or after the signing incident, but either way it reeks of some Andy Kaufman/Jerry Lawler type shit. My guess is they filmed both of these (possibly others) and just went with the funniest one. Maybe that will end up in the DVD or something, but I think this is some good evidence that she knew what was going on.

Im a big Ali G fan and I laughed plenty at this movie

but keeping in mind that this was a documentary of a fictional character (i.e. he did his pre-scripted part, the people he talked to were real) - black kids supposedly teaching him to say nigga was hot in the streets?

also, I'm fairly sure the prostitute was real and she just played his girlfriend at the end. (She was credited as being herself). Horrible portrayal of a black woman (and sure enough white folks loved it), was that intended to be good comedy? The really cute big girl in Road Trip worked because it contrasted how skinny that dude was, this was just 'have him call a big black ghetto prostitute'. The movie went downhill after she showed up (except for the part where him and his boy ran into the convention room)

Finally, I think the whole flick was a ploy for that Pam Anderson stunt. I remember it was in the news when he did it and she had no clue who he was.

far from the funniest movie of the last decade like critics are saying, but it made me laugh as much as I expected it to.

What I hated, however, was the people at Fox, or whoever decided to release this shit on so few screens. I live in a pretty decent sized city (metropolitan area of around 800,000) and it was in two theaters on four screens.

I went for the 7:50 showing at 7:10, thinking I'd be good. Sold out. Bought my tickets for the 9:50 showing, went and got drinks, came back at 9:15 and found a massive line for the ticket holders to stand in. Then instead of ushering us in based on this line-up, it was a free for all up the stairs and into the theater (didn't even check for tickets).

Ended up in the third row and was pretty much laying down to see it. And yet it was still worth it.

How does limiting the amount of cash you can bring in on opening weekend equal a good business plan? I live in a 2mil city, shit was sold out ten hours ahead of time all weekend. It was only playing in ONE theatre in the major city, and about five others in the suburbs. It would have got more word-of-mouth with a fifty million opening weekend, which he might have pulled off.

Now I usually laugh alot at anything, but maybe my expectations were too high. The funniest part to me was the bed and breakfast and them 'cleverly changing shapes' lmao. So much of the dialogue was hilarious, but a couple parts were far too predictable (this is my sister, the cheese part). Also, it was hella funny that so many cats in the theater were either shaking their heads or kinda being flabbergasted at so much of the Jew stuff, my brother and I were DYING while cats around us were like omg, no he didnt(although that aint stop them from laughing at much of the rest). I thoroughly enjoyed it, but alot of it was just shock coedy imo, some crazy shit though lol.

edit: I also found it very fitting that one of the previews was for the Dixie Chicks movie and the shit they got......then you see some of these segments down south with Borat, its only fitting.

swiped from Entertainment Weekly:

>Would (Borat) have played as impressively if it had opened in more locations? Probably not. It may have earned a couple million more bucks, but it wouldn’t have had the killer average and, by extension, the vivid appearance of a buzz-driven hit. (Pay particular attention to its solid-but-not-stellar B+ CinemaScore average from ticket buyers, the kind of mark that doesn’t necessarily indicate a long-playing success.) The true test, therefore, will come next weekend, when the film is expected to expand to a standard wide release and play to crowds that aren’t in its target audience.

i can't believed it was #1 this weekend, beating new release family pics like santa clause 3 and flushed away. that says a lot about the state of disney and kiddie cinema in general. how embarassing for them!

in silver spring, MD it was showing on 3 screens and still selling out some of the times.

personally i'm waiting for the dvd release. i mean it was shot on video, right? is there a real reason to see it on the big screen besides seeing it a few months earlier?

writing this paragraph...

"Black folks, be forewarned; this movie ain’t really for you. This is one of those movies where most black folk see the trailer and go “that looks so fucking stupid,” right after they finish laughing their asses off at a Wayans Brothers trailer about two brothers who are detectives posing as world-renowned chefs on an expensive cruise ship destined for Aruba, and there in Aruba, they both meet the kind of exotic biracial black girls that only seem to appear in Wayans Brothers movies."

How is this movie not "for us". I mean he makes un of all types of people in this movie. What he thinks that black people have no sense of humor and we're not smart enough to get this kind of humor? That's ridiculous. We can laugh at ourselves and myself and all my frieds that saw the movie loved it. My same friends that hate corny ass Wayans brothers movies loved this movie. GTFOHWTBS...

The majority of my friends who are all educated (black engineers, doctors, lawyers, buinessmen and women, etc.) don't support "shity black movies" like Soul Plane, White Chicks, etc. Don't you think there's a lot of us out there that are tired of seeing the same stereotypically, mindless, unfunny black movies that have come out for the past few years? I mean I give props to a good comedy if I see it, but I haven't seen a "good" black comedy in years. I mean I'm not knocking whoever wants to see movies like that but dont sit here and try to say ALL of us support movies like that because that's bullshit.

Who said anything about being "smart enough" to enjoy Borat? All of us here knows exactly what he means because I personally, no tons of black perfessionals who would not enjoy this type of humor and may enjoy a Wayans movie and I don't think it has anything to do with intelligence. Your self hatred and belief that black people aren't as smart as white people has been laid bare. If you get mad at my post it just further confirms my position.

Ok, let me get this straight....I'm a racist and I "hate" myself because I disagree with his comments. Umm, racist against whom exactly. I'm racsist against myself and other black folks because I don't think we all only like watching bullshit ass coonish movies. With that comment and your "I know a lot of black professionals blah blah blah" I would def think you were racist if you were white. I posed a question asking if the writer thinks we don't have a sense of humor or are smart enough to get this movie. That's how I took his comments, so what. To me his comments are generalizing all black people. Some black folks will not like it and some will regardless of their social standing. Just like a lot of white people will like it and some won't. My point was that EVERY one of my friends, family members, etc. that have seen this movie loved it. So it's bullshit to make a general comment that black people won't like and all of us watch crap like White Girls (which in all actuality you know more white people probably saw that movie in the theaters than black people).

Speaking of TV shows I'm not sure would make good movies, did anyone else catch the Reno 911 trailer? I was thinking this would be a bomb but the trailer was great. I'm actually looking forward to seeing this now.

I don't even think it matters. You could say it's funnier if it's real, but really, it's just funnier if people's reactions *seem* real, and however they did it, they did an amazing job of making it feel that way. I'm super impressed either way. Such a funny movie.

NOTE: I do think quite a bit of it was staged to some extent, but only because I can't imagine how you could pull it off otherwise. ***SPOILER*** Except for the Pamela Anderson thing. That looked staged. They should have had him get tackled the second he got the bag on her. The part with him chasing her through the bookstore and into the parking lot ruined the illusion for me.

While reading reviews of the movie today I found out that there was an Ali G movie in 2002. Call me late but I hadn't ever heard that. I just d/l it off the torrents and had to run here and let people know if they haven't seen it yet that I think it's even better than the Borat movie. I'm not even 1/2 way through yet and I've laughed more times than Borat and I love both. Just thought I'd spread the word.

112. "BORAT FOR BEST ACTOR!"
In response to Reply # 0

http://www.maximumfun.org/blog/2006/11/borat-for-best-actor-four-great.html

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences doesn't think much of comedy, generally speaking. Of the 30 films that have been nominated for best picture in the 21st century, only one was a comedy (Alexander Paine's "Sideways"). In that same timeframe, 60 actors and actresses have been nominated for Oscars for lead performances. Of those 60, four were for comedies -- Judi Dench in "Mrs. Henderson Presents" (more of a lifetime achievement nomination), Diane Keaton for "Something'S Gotta Give," Jack Nicholson for "About Schmidt" (same) and Nicholas Cage in "Adaptation." There are a few borderline cases ("Gosford Park," "Lost in Translation"), but the point remains the same. Indeed, three of the four actors nominated Dench, Nicholson and Cage) are known primarily as dramatic actors. The one comic actor nominated, Bill Murray, was nominated for an almost comically self-serious role. This is all to say, in the words of a man who narrowly missed a Best Actor nod for "Ladybugs," that comedy gets no respect.

So what does it take to win an Oscar for comedy? A performance that's truly transcendent. One that breaks the rules so thoroughly that it writes new ones. Someone who captures our hearts at the same time they incite our laughter. A bolt from the blue that makes us re-evaluate what comedy and comic acting can be.

In other words, Borat.

Borat is a tornado, tearing apart our cultural landscape. Sneak previews and festival screenings of the film started building buzz a few months ago. One of the most respected comedy writers I know went on record saying that he thought it might be the funniest movie ever. Reviewers have been effusive, parroting that comedy writer's praise. The film opened number one in the country on only 800 screens, and is shaping up to be a cultural juggernaut. At the center of it all, of course, is Borat -- or more specifically, actor Sascha Baron Cohen, playing the role of his life.

I'll say it right now: if Sascha Baron Cohen doesn't take home an Oscar for this film, the Oscars are irellevant.

What's so amazing about his performance?

- The transformation. The Academy has already shown it's prediliction for the showy, transformative performance. Philip Seymour Hoffman as the self-parodic Truman Capote, or Jamie Foxx as the eyes-glued-shut Ray Charles are only the most recent examples. Cohen's Borat is even more remarkable. This bizarre creation must functional not only in the fictional confines of a carefully scripted drama, but in the real world, where normal people buy into his reality even as he spouts absurdities. A man at the rodeo warns him to shave his mustache, so he won't be mistaken for Muslim. Borat tells him he isn't Muslim, he is a Kazakh: "we follow the Hawk."

- The creativity. Cohen's character work must be so well-grounded that he can carry it anywhere, and it must be flexible enough to use in real life. He can certainly prepare in advance for a scene, but to succeed, he has to generate ideas in the moment, not only to ground the reality, but to create the laughs. An amazing achievement.

- The empathy. Perhaps the most amazing part of the Borat phenomenon is the love he generates from the audience. No matter how vile his comments about gypsies and jews, or how bizarre his behavior, the audience remains sympathetic to him and indeed identifies with his journey. Balancing on that razor's edge is unbelievably difficult, and Cohen has done it perfectly.

- The... newness. There's never been a character like this, or a film like this. The film isn't completely without precedent -- there's certainly a bit of "Spinal Tap," a bit of "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure," a little Peter Sellers and even a bit of Dogme and Mike Leigh. But to create something new, and do it so succesfully, is amazing. And it all comes back to Cohen's stunning performance.

In short, a filmic comedy performance can't get any better than Cohen's in "Borat." It's a once-in-a-lifetime tour de force. It's magic. And if the Academy can't see that... what are they good for, anyway?

I'm trying to think of the possible Best Actor nominations, based on what I've seen and read:

Forrest Whitaker
Ryan Gosling
Matt Damon (for The Departed or The Good Shepherd)
Leo DiCaprio (for The Departed or Blood Diamond)

And apparently the upcoming performances are said to be Oscar-worthy:

Will Smith
Jude Law
Peter O'Toole

I could see Sacha Baron Cohen being nominated as a dark horse, if only because of the serious commitment he's given to the character, and not just in terms of the film...

S.C. sequel: ‘Borat’ goes to court
USC frat brothers sue, say they were plied with liquor to be in movie
From Staff and Wire Reports

Two fraternity brothers from the University of South Carolina want to make lawsuit against “Borat” over their drunken appearance in the hit movie.

The legal action filed Thursday on their behalf claims they were duped into appearing in the spoof documentary “Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan,” in which they made racist and sexist comments on camera.

The students — not named in the film or the lawsuit — were Chi Psi brothers at USC at the time of filming 13 months ago.

“We have not been involved in that process,” said Mike Cavanaugh, Chi Psi Alumni president for the USC chapter, of the “Borat” movie lawsuit filed Thursday in California.

All three members who appeared in the movie have left the Alpha Beta chapter, according to Cavanaugh, either through graduation or by transferring. “We are not involved at all.”

The young men “engaged in behavior they otherwise would not have engaged in,” the lawsuit says.

“Borat” follows the adventures of comedian Sacha Baron Cohen’s Kazakh journalist character in a blend of fiction and improvised comic encounters as he travels across the United States and mocks Americans.

The plaintiffs were not named in the lawsuit “to protect themselves from any additional and unnecessary embarrassment.” They appeared drunk as they made insulting comments about women and minorities to Cohen’s character.

The lawsuit claims that in October 2005, a production crew took the students to a bar to drink and “loosen up” before participating in what they were told would be a documentary to be shown outside the United States.

“They were induced to agree to participate and were told the name of the fraternity and the name of their school wouldn’t be used,” said the plaintiffs’ attorney, Olivier Taillieu. “They were put into an RV and were made to believe they were picking up Borat the hitchhiker.”

After a bout of heavy drinking, the plaintiffs signed a release form they were told “had something to do with reliability issues with being in the RV,” Taillieu said.

The film “made plaintiffs the object of ridicule, humiliation, mental anguish and emotional and physical distress, loss of reputation, goodwill and standing in the community,” the lawsuit said.

It names 20th Century Fox, a unit of News Corp., and three production companies as defendants.

Studio spokesman Gregg Brilliant said the lawsuit “has no merit.”

The plaintiffs were seeking an injunction to stop the studio from displaying their image and likeness, along with unspecified monetary damages.

“Borat” debuted as the top movie last weekend with $26.5 million.

I know movies in limited release often make more money in their second week of release (in wider release) but when's the last time the #1 movie in America?

Shrek was the last I know of. It's barely went up (.3%) and it finished in #2 behind Pearl Harbor.

We'll probably never see another movie -- one that initially opens on as many screens -- do this... the last movie to come close, however, was National Treasure, which only dropped 9% from week 1 to week 2 in 2004.

I'm too lazy to swipe it. This also answers whether or not Pamela Anderson was in on the joke (although it should have been pretty obvious that she was):

Romanian Town Angry With 'Borat'
Glod Residents Tense After Release Of Film

POSTED: 4:26 pm EST November 14, 2006

GLOD, Romania -- The name of this remote Romanian village means "mud," and that's exactly what angry locals are throwing back at comedian Sacha Baron Cohen.

Cohen used Glod's Gypsies as stand-ins for Kazakhs in his runaway hit movie, "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan." Now offended villagers are threatening to sue the film's producers for paying them a pittance to put farm animals in their homes and perform other crude antics.

Residents and local officials in the scruffy hamlet 85 miles northwest of Bucharest said Tuesday they were horrified and humiliated to learn their abject poverty and simple ways are ridiculed in a movie, which has raked in $67 million at box offices in the United States alone in just two weeks.

"We thought they came here to help us - not mock us," said Dana Luca, 40, sweeping a manure-stained street lined with shabby homes of crumbling brick and corrugated iron sheeting.

"We haven't got anything here. We haven't got running water. We can't even bathe," she said. "We are poor people, but we are still people."

Nicolae Staicu, leader of the 1,670 Gypsies, or Roma, who eke out a living in one of the most impoverished corners of Romania, said he and other officials would meet with a public ombudsman on Wednesday to map out a legal strategy against Cohen and "Borat" distributor 20th Century Fox. The film's opening sequence showing Borat's hometown in Kazakhstan is shot in Glod.

Staicu accused the producers of paying locals just $3.30 to $5.50, misleading the village into thinking the movie would be a documentary, refusing to sign proper filming contracts and enticing easily exploited peasants into performing crass acts.

Only five villagers have jobs at a nearby sanatorium and a stone quarry, Staicu said. The rest weave baskets, grow apples, pears and plums, gather mushrooms in the dense Carpathian Mountain forests rising above the town, or raise a few scrawny chickens.

With no gas heating or indoor plumbing, most keep warm with wood stoves and drink from wells. Horse-drawn carts far outnumber automobiles on unpaved, badly potholed roads, and mangy stray dogs growl and snap at strangers.

Acrid fires smolder in trash piled up on the outskirts of the village, and children - their clothing worn and torn - play in yards littered with stumps, scrap metal and other bric-a-brac.

"These people are poor and they were tricked by people more intelligent than us," he said.

Neither Cohen's agent in London nor 20th Century Fox's offices in Los Angeles immediately returned phone messages Tuesday from The Associated Press.

The mood in Glod, meanwhile, was tense and volatile, with crowds of angry, shouting villagers repeatedly gathering around reporters.

One man was seen slapping his sister, who had appeared in the film, and slamming the gate to his ramshackle home shut to keep her from being interviewed. At another point, a resident threatened news photographers with a stick, and another pelted their car with rocks.

People in the former Soviet republic of Kazakhstan also have decried how they are depicted in the film. Cohen's character is a Kazakh TV journalist on an adventure across America.

Two members of a fraternity at a South Carolina university who appear making drunken, insulting comments about women and minorities also are suing 20th Century Fox and three production companies, claiming the crew got them drunk in a bar before filming and told them the movie would not be shown in the United States.

Not everyone in Glod is upset. Sorina Luca, 25, excitedly described how she was given $3.30 to bring a pig into her home and let the producers put a toy rifle into the hands of her 5-year-old daughter for one scene.

"I really liked it," she said. "We are poor and miserable. Nothing ever happens here."

The funniest parts were the real moments. There were some moments that seemed way too scripted. 2/3 of the movie was pretty funny. The last third was very dull. Ummm, overall . . . its ok.
