"Children of Men is freakin' intense, dude! (Spoiler-free)"

Checked out an advanced screening tonight. Was expecting a sci-fi yarn along the lines of a 28 Days Later or 12 Monkeys, but by the first 15 minutes, my jaw was already hitting the floor. This flick grabs you by the doublesack (or cameltoe) and takes you for a long-line theme park ride.

This is the complete package. Solid acting, directing, cinematography and writing. An almost flawless piece of work. Actually, make that flawless, I can't think of anything I didn't like about it, except the whole believability factor, but it's science fiction, so who cares. The entertainment factor is supremely high, and suprisingly, so is the intellectual component. There's a lot of to take in, so I'll be seeing it again at some point.

I haven't been this geeked about a sci-fi joint for a long, long time. This is the real deal. I do not lie. Most definitely hit this.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

there's one scene that might be the most technically impressive five minutes of war film ever shot. it's where clive owen is running around a war zone looking for a woman and her baby (no spoiler-o), in and out of buildings, through crowded chaotic streets, etc, and all manner of craziness is going on, explosions, gunfire, tanks, people yelling and whatnot. but the thing is, that whole 5-minute scene was shot in one continuous take, no cuts. remember how impressed you were by that scene in goodfellas where ray liotta is escorted into the club and he's walking through the building, greeting everybody in the club, from the kitchen staff on down, and the scene goes on for two or three minutes and never cuts away until he's seated? remember how you thought, man, it must have taken a week of shooting for everybody (including cameramen, sound, etc) to hit their marks perfectly in one three-minute take? this scene in children of men completely blows that and every other one-take scene out of the water. imagine the first five minutes of the saving private ryan beach landing done in one continuous shot. it's that amazing.

"i smack clowns with nouns, punch herbs with verbs..."

the warzone scene wasn't the only impressive long take. there were at least 4 that i can think of, though the war one was likely the most awe inspiring:

a) the war
b) the scene at the beginning when they're in the woods and the car comes crashing down the hill all the way until they get rid of the police (ONE TAKE)
c) the escape from the FISH house (including the sneaking out)
d) the birth of the baby (from the time he enters the room until the kid actually pops out, which blows my mind)

the movie is one of the most impressively directed movies i've ever seen and easily the best movie i saw all year

But the way the camera spun around after the big event in that scene impressed the hell out of me.

The scene at the end where they are walking out the building with baby and everyone just stops what they are doing in awe was sweet as well.

In response to Reply # 1

***Spoilers***

I haven't seen the film yet, but I've read that the new issue of American Cinematographer has an article on Lubezki's work on the film and that some of the long take sequences were blended. Not sure if that means CGI additions (major or minor) or the long take was built of shots put together like Bonfire of the Vanities.

***End spoilers***

In response to Reply # 1

he cheated.

you can tell because as the camera follows Clive Owen on the bus, some blood splatter hits the camera and remains present until he enters the building... but while we never a see a cut, the blood splatter disappears once inside. so there was most definately a cut there.

though the scene in the van when they are being chased was 1 take and just as impressive.

I was thinking he cheated too, but couldn't that have been the result of switching to a different lens mid-shot? Rotating camera lenses?

Possibility, no?

In an article, Cuaron said they digitally erased the blood b/c they (he and Lubezki) felt that keeping the blood on the lens would call attention to the long take instead of the plot and story at those moments...that it would distract and lessen the impact.

In response to Reply # 84

They applied the effect gradually so the average viewer wouldn't notice. Pay close attention to whenever Clive runs through a darker area. The blending speeds up in those spots.

And Cuaron and Lubiezki did cheat on that particular shot. They shot this scene five times and blended it together. They did not cheat on the scene inside the car, though.

It was the first time that PD James wrote in this genre. She's a mystery writer who is ancient. Seriously, she's like 85 or something, and this one was written maybe ten years ago. So she was pretty old when she wrote it.

I like it a lot. In fact, I don't think of myself as much of a mystery reader, so I hadn't read any of her books, but when this one came out it was reviewed so well that I picked it up. Since then I've read a fair number of her mysteries, but Children of Men remains my favorite.

I mean, my first thought was that I should give it back because they obviously need it more than I do.

My second thought was that those assholes think I can't get a date.

My third thought was that I hate the AMC theatre closest to me. With a passion.

My fourth thought was that maybe I'll see a mainstream film for once, lol.

I was more impressed w/ the weed smokin scene between Clive & Caine than I was w/ all the technical wizardry.

Had no idea Danny Huston was in this & I wish he had more screen time.

Clive continues to impress tho so the movie was worth it for his involvement alone. His delivery of certain lines in this movie are just dead on perfect.

It's easy to forget that this is a futuristic sci-fi film w/ the production desgin & set pieces as even the futuristic cars looked rather modern or even outdated in some instances. But I liked the way that the look of the film conveyed that even this desirable Brittish society had regressed. I think the more I think about it, the more I might like it after the fact.

Was that a Roots Manuva song Jasper was bumpin when the car 1st pulls up to his stead? And has Micheal Caine already received some lifetime acheivement award? Because if not, he's looooooong overdue for one. Dude's been absolutely flawless in the last 3 flicks I've seen him in. The previous 2 being The Prestige & Batman Begins.

they wanted the baby so they can prove that immigrants arent worthless. and they could recruit more ppl (british and immigrants) for fish/the uprising.

>Was Julianne Moore's death an accident or a conspiracy?

julian wanted to give the baby to the Human Project (whatever that is) and the other Fish members wanted to keep the baby as a point of rally. so yes they killed julian and made it look like a robbery gone bad.

>Was the Midwife in it too? How did they find the safehouse?

they shot Julian through the winshield and could've easily hit Kee, then when they were escaping the FISH house they were like "Don't shoot at the car, Kee's in there!"

I'll assume they made sure Kee was sitting on the far right of the car, the midwife inbetween and Theo directly behind Julian to absorb the bullet should it pass through

however, when they go to shoot Theo they could have easily killed Kee as well.

well, to me because it was so subtle and powerful at the same time.

when they go to the abandoned school and the girl is sitting in the swing while theo and that other lady were inside looking out at her. there's a hole in one of the windows so you can see the girl outside on the swing. it's shot in a way that the girl actually looks like a child in the womb.

i thought that was dope.

but this movie had some of the most technically sound scenes this year.

great movie.

It's been on limited release thus far and isn't it opening in more cities (wide) starting tomorrow?

It's doing well on many year-end lists and the festival circuit was buzzing earlier.

At least it's not opening in the two Regals (ugh) near me.
And isn't Regal the largest chain in the US?

It just so happens I'll be in Boston this weekend though and I'll be doing all I can to see it.

And actually, if I remember correctly, it will only be in one Boston theater. So it must be one of those slowly expanding wide releases.

1)First, why such a limited release? While I don't think this has "BLOCKBUSTER" written all over it, it sure seems like this may have cost a decent amount of money to be showing in so few venues.

2) Second, did anyone else feel a correlation of sorts between Theo and Noah (from the Bible)? To begin, fifteen minutes into the film we see the Pink Floyd pig hovering outside of Theo's cousin's window. Obviously this stresses "ANIMALS." More than once, dogs would remain by Theo's side, as cited by the man at the farm who commented on the dog being comfortable around Theo. Furthermore, when Theo realized that Key was pregnant, she was standing in a pen of young cows, implying that unlike humans, animals are still fertile. To top it off, as the world collapses around him, Theo is pursuing a boat. Just a thought maybe, but I thought it was pretty explicit.

i took the barn scene to be one of those heavy-handed biblical references, jesus (the savior) being born in a barn surrounded by farm animals. after theo (which, not coincidentally, means "god" in latin) sees that she is pregnant, he even mutters "jesus christ." then they joke around about the immaculate conception

but now that i think about it, that noah parallel makes sense

It's platforming strategy. They hope w/ limited release that it'll build buzz and word-of-mouth. In the meantime they save on advertising and print costs (huge expense). If demand rises, they adjust accordingly. Conservative.

I won't bother repeating all the praise heaped on this movie in this post but I have to say the scene when the baby starts crying and everything stops. Theo and Kee slowly make their way through the building and down the stairs and everyone has their own unique reactions - to cry, to try and touch Kee and the baby, to protect them - and then the soldiers see the baby and they freeze and those two dudes knelt to pray and as they walk no one moves, they just watch and you think that "wow this baby may actually create some sense of peace" and then the rocket fires from the building and the fighting starts up again.

I'll admit that I welled up a little because that's the moment that the reality of the situation of the people in this world are facing.

Also, it didn't occur to me until after the fact about why people were so protective of their pets because that's all they had.

Cuaron is officially a master.

*spoilers*

this was an action movie straight up.

not a whole lot was explained. they never tell you why women became infertile... they never tell you how this girl was able to get pregnant, we dont know anything about the human project other than the fact that they are studying the future of humanity, etc.

point is that it holds you the whole movie and like the characters, all that stuff is good, but for a sci fi movie, it does a pretty terrible job painting the big picture. When you take a step back to look at the situation as a whole, you are pretty clueless. So for that reason, this was a excellemt action movie with wonderful cinematography, but a mediocre sci fi flick.

Because he had a semblance of a character, complete with a little backstory. Yeah, we know Clive Owen and Julianne Moore had a history, but Owen's performance was too cold for anyone to really care if he succeeded or not.

I think Theo needed to be somewhat cold. That's how he's introduced, and his attitude is justifiable -- look at the world he's living in and what he's been through, losing his son and all. He's whisked into this journey so suddenly, and the action happens so fast, he's never given a chance to thaw out, really, until that final scene.

Those, my friend, are MacGuffins -- cinematic red herrings. The literal truth behind those questions is unimportant. They are simply plot devices, a la the contents of the briefcase in "Pulp Fiction," used to motivate the characters, advance the story and push the themes. If you need some semblance of an explanation, consider this: Maybe the flagellants are right. Maybe mass infertility IS divine punishment for man's inhumanity man. For fighting and killing each other over insignificant bullshit like oil and land, God has taken away mankind's real most precious resource: children. Personally, I'm glad the film never directly explains this stuff. I mean, is there any literal explanation that could make sense and be halfway satisfying?

As for the Human Project, we don't know anything about it because nobody in the film really knows anything about it. Thematically, it's just a simple metaphor for hope. After 18 years of global infertility, and with the death of Baby Diego, hope is essentially a dead concept in the world. The project and the ship are small slivers of light cutting through the darkness * SPOILER * (hence the boat approaching through the thick fog at the end), and Theo is running toward it because, well, what else does he have to lose?

Needless to say, I loved this flick. Best of '06.

Where do gremlins come from and why the hell is William Shatner so shook when he sees on ripping up the wing of his plane?

Is that woman just crazy or did her past self talk her through her repressed memories?

Planet of giants traumatized by crazy spacesuited astronauts from Earth? That's umpossible...

Both used sci-fi/fantasy elements as maguffin's to tell a story.

Another example would be, exactly how did all those people know they were supposed to go to Devil's Tower? What the hell did those music notes mean? Where the heck are they taking that guy at the end of the movie?

...to support the macguffin's. The plane and grimlin episode isn't about a plane and a gremlin, it's about fear, paranoia, claustrophobia and helplessness. What's Children of Men about? Man kind is violent? People take advantage of anarchy? Everyone knows this already. It's fine to discuss issues the audience is familier with but you should either add something new to the debate or thoroughly explore the debate. But when the debate is some people suck and some people don't, it doesn't offer much foder for conversation.

In Romero's Dead series, especially Dawn, you don't really know what made the zombies in the first place (I think the comet explanation was just propaganda) and all we're really offered is that when hell is filled, the dead will rise. In Children of Men, we're not given anything like that.

I got the impression that the baby was a metaphor for "faith/hope" and how it's existence had the potential power the get people to stop and think instead of just react. The only way that the infant could have such an impact would for there to be 20 years with no children. The how and why this happened is not important to the story being told in the film.

Along with that, the film illustrates the effects of what happens when everyone has lost all hope for any kind of future. Not simply by telling, but showing how the infrastructure, society and even the government is in one big downward spiral. In it's place we have all kinds of radical reactions to this loss.

There is a larger visual narrative that is separate from the basic premise that I think many people are missing out on as well. The fugee internment point was, to me, a kind of recreation of Bosch's paintings depicting hell and the apocalypse. The dining room with Picasso's Guernica as the background was another visual message not just about human nature and it's ability to destroy itself but also tying into the ambivilance of the that wealthy family to the slow dissoultion going on outside.

In any case, all of this is simply a backdrop for the main story, getting the girl and child to safety.

I would agree with you if we saw a conflict actually stop because of the baby but it continued allowing Owen and the girl to slip away. I don't know if they were trying to say something or if the writer needed an excuse but it seems terribly pessimistic.

I think "The world needs hope" is way too broad a message for a two hour film. I think the plot of getting the girl to the human project was too weak when we didn't really learn what the Human Project is and the controversy surrounding it. I would have been fine not knowing how the girl got pregnant or if they managed to save the world, but I don't think the plot and the universe was rounded out enough.

the idea is that WE, us humans, are really dropping the ball lately.
I don't think it's an action movie OR a sci-fi movie, it's a social commentary movie.

it's asking us to SUSPEND OUR DISBELIEF and simply take a suspicious look at a crumbling world in the not too distant future,no matter how exaggerated it may be.

it's on some "Yeah, this is far fetched, but look at how bad we're fuckin' up right now". This idea is made no more clear than in the closing seconds of the final scene, when after two minutes of tranquility, Kay and Theo calmly exit the building and fighting resumes about ten seconds later.

this movie is endlessly better because it doesn't include what you're asking for. i mean knowing that shit would be so much more corny and contrived. i really think that's why lost is starting to take an L cos it's like magnetic force stabilizers and shit?... wtf i still don't know what that shit is about. this movie do such a more incredible job with the showing rather than hamming it up the telling. (errbody praying shanti shanti shanti was an amazing touch. of course people would convert to hinduism what with reincarnation and all. the graff, the reactions to baby diego's death). that is what makes this classic and effective storytelling.

In response to Reply # 64

I have to call you out because you description of why the movie wasn't sci-fi is silly and shows you really haven't been following the genre. As audiences become more spohisticated, the need to explain things decrease and writers can spend less time explaining backstory and spend more time on the story that matters. This goes for literature in general but it especially relevant to sci-fi because the science is so often superfulous the stories which are often time present day commentary.
They could have started the movie with a screen that explained the infertility was due to "a solar storm/genetic experiment/global warming/etc." but who gives a sh*t. If you are focused on how come women are infertile you might as well spend your time wondering how do they have billboards that are animated because you are focused on argubly the wrong part of the story.
Don't get me wrong. there are some essential things that need to be explained. Why was the world descending into chaos? (because there is no future). Why is Clive Owen the only one that Julianne Moore can trust? (because they are formal lovers who had a child together).

I think a great thing about the movie is that it gave you just enough information to figure out everything you need to know. The information about the death of his explain how theo went from activist to beauracrat and his relationship to Julianne Moore. Michael Caine's indomitable sense of humor is somehow makes sense because he is a former cartonist a heavy pot user.

I contrast CoM with V for Vendetta which had a huge whole in its story that gets in the way of enjoying the movie, that is, why would Britian be transformed into a police state?

Anyway, all this to say, go pick up the latest year's best sci-fi short fiction. Read it and you will find a lot of great stories that don't bother to explain the why's of the science because what's really important is how the science affects people and how that relates to us.

The difference I think is I don't see why or britian could end up as the facist state depicted in the movie. That's a huge hurdle in connecting with the movie.

Have I been as blown away from a director's creative innovation and technical precision as I have with this one. I'm not comparing the two film's styles, they're totally different, just how on-point the directors were in creating their worlds.

I knew it was going to be good, I didn't know I'd be breathless after those scenes.

That's (along with the fact that I presume they wouldn't goo up a pretty new baby for the birth scene the way they did) what made me think the baby was fake. Baby is born and lies flaccid for a moment, raising the brief fear that it was stillborn. Then suddenly baby starts moving its little arms, blinking its little eyes, opening its little mouth, turning its little head. All at once. In exquisite detail. It really looked fake to me.

yeah you heard it here first..lol

But whoa...the first showing was sold out, had to drive 30 minutes to the next spot to see it, the movie just grabs a hold of you and does not let go..I loved it...surprisingly a few jokers in attendance didn't like it..heard a few "gimme my money back" and disgruntled moans..but at the same time heard a few heads say they were feeling it...even some hand claps at the end...what a way to kick off the movie year for the '07 next...

I have a feeling Cuarón has played Half-Life quite a bit. All of the sequences passing through the city felt really similar to the intros of both the games. Pretty cool.

This was pretty great too:

I was even telling my friend right afterwards how so much of it reminded me of Half-life 2, esp due to the near FPS-type camera. Damn, considering how many cats had the same reaction, Cuaron may seriously have modeled it a bit after Half-life imo.

In getting Key and Theo to the rowboat, Merika was essential to the process and went through it all with good intentions. But when it came time to actually leave the tunnel, Merika insisted on not getting on the rowboat, saying that while the US can be very helpful in the grand scheme of global aid, our country should use better discretion in this department as well.

everyone seems to be in agreement that the film is beautiful and very impressive from a cinematography standpoint. the acting was pretty good too, i thought (i had just seen "Serenity" for the first time, and it was nice to see Chiwetel Ejiofor in this film too playing a similarly complex villain and doing a great job).

but i was a little underwhelmed by the story, meaning, social commentary etc. i think a previous poster said that this was really just a really well-made action film with a few bits of deeper meaning-- i'd agree with that.

it'd be interesting to have the same story without the clive owen character-- just the mother and the child trying to get somewhere.

While it was a good action movie, and a bit sci-fi, I don't think it was strictly either. I'm ok with not having a backstory on how women became infertile, how the uprising started, background on characters, etc. And while I appreciate the imagination, I don't see Theo as representing Noah, or women being infertile as God's punishment, etc.

I think the story of no children being born was just a means to represent a hopeless situation across the world. It's not so important how it happened, you could replace infertility with any unfortunate occurance that would create hopelessness worldwide, it's more about how individuals choose to react to the situation. That's why I thought the scene with Theo and Kee moving through the crowd with the baby was so powerful, because even after being so visibly moved by the first sign of hope in 18+ years, these people are back to fighting minutes later.

I wish I hadn't read the first review on here or watched a trailer before I saw it though, both were misleading. I though there'd be more action. Some stuff needed to be explained better, some stuff could have been left out. It probably needed to be longer, even though in some parts it was very slow. But the continuos shot was dope, and when they cease firing and all the soldiers are watching her carry the baby out, that was nuts, I shed a few tears myself.

First of all, I liked the movie, so let's get that out of the way. If anyone needs a reminder I invite them to go find my earlier review of the movie in one of the What Did You Watch This Week posts from back in late October/early November.

But the movie... it reminded me a lot of The Aviator, in that it was technically solid, superb, even, but left me cold emotionally -- with the glaring exception of, I'll say again, Michael Caine. And no, I didn't care about Clive and ol' girl walking through the bombed out building with the baby and the soldiers stopping to let them pass near the end of the film. By then it was too little, too late.

I know I mentioned the one single-take sequence that ends the "first act" of the movie, the one with everyone in the car. I guess that one stands out so much because I believed that Clive Owen's character and Julianne Moore's character had a rich history together and wanted to learn more about it (and I know, "that's not what the story's about"). But just when I needed more information, the scene in the car happens, and I felt kinda cheated.

Like I said, I really liked the film, was amazed by the technical prowess involved, but for a story that had 5 credited writers attached to it to leave me as cold as it did just doesn't cut it. It was surprising to know that this film came from the same guy who made the superb Y Tu Mama Tambien and Harry Potter 3, movies that have rich characters that I could invest in emotionally...

just b/c its supposed to be cold doesnt mean it can't give you some sort of emotional feeling for the character. Like dude said below, million dollar baby is cold, from morgan freeman having gone blind and the retarted bol gettin fucked up, to the tragic ending, but you leave the theater feeling some sort of way about what happened. Ileft children of men feeling nothing about anyone, or any part of the story. It was well acted, direction was beautiful, but the character development was dry and the story, outside of its premise, was a little bland for my tastes.

I'd flip it. I kind of felt hollow after Million and didn't get attached to any of those characters. And yet, I found that I *DID* care for Kee, Miriam, Jasper and Theo. I did care what happened to them and the fate of our species.

Mind you, I'll give you that the character dev was somewhat narrow and blunt in it's focus, but it was enough for me and left me wholly satisfied, without the need for more.

I liked it a lot. Maybe because it went SO far afield from the book that it was like, inspired by thoughts that Cuaron had about the book, or something like that.

Basically the premise was all that was the same. Like some of the basic givens at the start of the film and the very basic thrust of the action.

But like you could sum up in one fairly short sentence the stuff where the book and the film were the same.

except that she just talks about when appointments were no longer being made.

As I recall, nothing about miscarriages.

Maybe this is explained by the fact that a woman wrote the book and a man adapted it for the screen.

the film and the book have very very little in common.

Themes are similar, but in the book there are some very specific, important plot points that are simply not a part of the film.

You've got Britain in the future.
You've got a world in which children are no longer being born.
You've got one pregnant woman.
You've got rebellion groups and immigration/transport issues.

But.... that's pretty much where the similarities end.

If it was men, as in the book, we could just clone people. You can clone (and thus propogate a species) without sperm. You can't do it without a womb.

Probably less an issue of PD James = woman, Cuaron = man, as much as the book was written in the early 90s and was pre-Dolly.

We are outraged and demoralized less by the impending end of our species, less even by our inability to prevent it, than by our failure to discover the cause.

I picked up the book again this morning because I realized that the movie had made me question whether I remembered the book *at all* lol

You would think there would be, wouldn't you? But they are really really different. Children of Men is about the near future, practically everything is the same, except... infertility. In The Handmaid's Tale, there's a whole cultural shift to the far puritanistic right.

Remember that Atwood has written her share of speculative fiction, and James is a mystery writer. I think that makes a big difference.

I loved the cinematography(you really cant help but enjoy some of those scenes) and all the details that were in this film......but I was really hoping that some of the backstories would be fleshed out, some of the relationships delved into, some explanations about the infertility. I just didnt feel the connection with the major characters that would have really made this a moving movie for myself....I really though that the movie would be more than just an action-film and maybe its just my tastes, but I feel like Cuaron and co. really missed out on an opportunity to really make this a masterpiece by not creating any genuine connection with the characters in what was otherwise such a well-done movie.

I thought it was very well done.

The dialogue (or perhaps the delivery of such) could have used a bit of a touch-up here and there. It always appalls me when big-budget films sport bad ADR looped lines.

But overall a very good (and important) film. I'm not sure about "best of the year" (I don't believe I've yet seen the "best film of 2006", likely because I was tuned out for most of it), but I'd be lying if I didn't say it was impactful.

However, it succeeded in depressing the living shit out of me. But that was probably the intent.

got this off of imdb.com:
In the scene where Miriam (Pam Ferris) is taken off the bus at Bexhill, the camera pans by several cages with prisoners in them. One of the prisoners seen is the infamous "hooded man" from the Abu Ghraib prison torture pictures. He is seen in the exact pose as the real pictures.

i just re-watched it and saw that exact scene. it's pretty fucking chilling, to say the least.

Yall hyped it so much that I expected even more than what it had to offer. It moved a lil slow in some parts. I liked the get-away seens. Didn't care for the link between people, you have the pregnant girl who's pretty much a marymagdelane character or (unfortuantely) an universal sterotypical black girl that sleeps around and don't know who her baby's daddy is. And there is no understanding to how she met with the Fishers or even the midwife.
I know kids hadn't been around in 18 yrs but why were they feeding a newborn oranges? Did any of the foremothers let her know she should breastfeed considering Gerber and Beechnut prolly ran outta business?

And what was the issue with Theo's lil cousin at the dinner table? Where some of the kids born after the 2008 deadlyflu effected with other issues?

I'll just read the book.

case in point: Snakes on a Plane

I didn't let the hype get me and was pleased just enough with the results to be happy I didn't get too geeked about it.

Theo's cousin was the result of control through medication. His father was controlling him in much the same way the government was trying to control the population -- through suggestion, coercion and deceit.

I need to read the book too.

The whole Quietus piece was interesting but if you didn't see the trailer online it would've gone over most heads same with the biblical references.
Don't get me wrong the movie wasn't a sleeper and it had some great moments, but it dragged and the ending had my date on 10 like 'thats IT!?!'. One of many messages it left me with was: If we don't appreciation our children now, only black hoochies will be able to seed the world.

Notice, once they got to the farm, Theo took off his shoes and stepped in the mud in his socks.

After that, they continued the shoes/feet theme throughout. When there was trouble, he kept hurting his feet.
When they had refuge, he soaked his feet and found shoes.

Was that significant at all?

Here's the link again as well for anyone that wants the entire article: http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=17897

CS: I saw you as what I would call almost a reluctant hero, your character, an average man improbably thrown into an extraordinary situation. One of the things that struck me, I want to ask you, being barefoot. I mean it was just that whole sense of immediacy. Were you really barefoot most of that time running?

Owen: For some of it. I mean it's a highly unusual lead character for a movie of this size really because the first half of the movie the guy doesn't even want to be there. The guy's dragged into the movie. He's very reluctant. It's very unusual to play a lead character that is apathetic, cynical, depressed, drunk, sad really, overwhelming sadness was the thing. Now they are unusual traits. That's not usually the sort of lead character of a movie and eventually he does become engaged. Theo sort of embodies the loss of hope. There's a hopelessness about him. He's given up. There is no point to anything. But through the movie he does become engaged again. Now the thing about the feet. People sort of crack jokes about the flip flops and things but it's actually a real stroke of genius because there's a point in the movie later on where suddenly Theo is becoming active. He's become engaged again and he's running around trying to save this girl which in turn could save the world and Alfonso, who has a huge sort of aversion to sentimentality, to stop any notion of we've seen this cliché where our guy's gonna become active and do it, he put me in flip flops. And that's never going to become the cliché action guy. It's like it's not going to happen. So that was a very deliberate thing on his part and then the thing just developed - the foot fetish developed throughout the movie.

people were marching in the streets chanting "allah hu akbar" (I'm sure I messed up the spelling)

I definitely saw it as far more than an action movie

I saw getting her to safety as the smaller story behind capturing what those days and times are like.

the title itself says to me "this is what our future could become"

excellent movie, I dont care enough to harp over the smallest details and intricacies

This was a very very good movie. I enjoyed this movie a lot. It was shot extremely well, and the birth scene was phenomenal.

Princeguy reviews:

"No pretentiousness.

No pompous re-interpretations.

Sometimes, a movie is just a movie. You work hard for your money.

The decision is yours.

See and enjoy what YOU like."

If I may, what was it that almost made you cry?

The scene that starts with Theo finding Kee in the room with Luke in the firefight and takes her out. From the point when Luke is told that it is not a boy it's a girl to the point when Theo and Kee are outside. That was *inTENSE*.

What had me near tears was on the second viewing, when I paid more attention the scenery and details.
The refugee holding cells when Miriam was pulled off the bus really hit me then. And the bombing scene at the end.
All that hopelessness punched me hard in the chest.

I can't really say why. I don't have a lot of time right now so when I can think of a good reason I will come back. It definitely was not better than V for Vendetta.
This film is easily one of the worst of 2006.
It is on my shit list along with Blood Diamond and Lady in the Water.

really well done suspense film within a sci-fi world

and I have a soft spot for post-apocalyptic style movies.

it's funny to believe an opening sentence reading "In 2007, an unknown virus spread around the world and made every woman infertile" would have made the movie any better or given it more meaning.

ah, so it was "an unknown virus"...now I can enjoy the movie!
