At the risk of being labeled an LOTR-hata, I gotta that damn movie is over-hyped. I dug the first one and thought the second had a lot more going for it. But "Return of the King" was boring and pretentious as hell. Giving it any of the "major" awards (i.e. non-technichal) is ridiculous. But that's just me.

Now since I've usually been wrong about predicting who actually WOULD win the Oscars, I'll rub my two nickels on who I think SHOULD.

>AND THE NOMINEES ARE . . .

>-Actor in a leading role

>Bill Murray in "Lost in Translation"

OR

>Sean Penn in "Mystic River"

If either one won, I wouldn't be disappointed. Murray showed great range and Sean Penn is just...well...Sean Penn ! He always comes correct.

>-Actor in a supporting role

>Alec Baldwin in "The Cooler"
>Benicio Del Toro in "21 Grams"
>Djimon Hounsou in "In America"
>Tim Robbins in "Mystic River"
>Ken Watanabe in "The Last Samurai"

All good choices, but--push comes to shove--I'd have go with Tim Robbins. I like Alec Baldwin, but since he's in a custody battle with his ex, Basinger, she might try to take that shit from him in court. (You know how ex-es do)

>-Actress in a leading role

>Charlize Theron in "Monster"

Is there really any dispute? IF by some lapse in judgement, they give it someone else, I can tolerate Naomi Watts as the haunted widow from "21 Grams".

>-Actress in a supporting role
>
>Shohreh Aghdashloo in "House of Sand and Fog"
>Patricia Clarkson in "Pieces of April"
>Marcia Gay Harden in "Mystic River"
>Holly Hunter in "Thirteen"
>Renée Zellweger in "Cold Mountain"

I'm sorry to say that I didn't see a lot of these except "River" and "Mountain" (shit, that sounds like a John Ford reject title), but if they give it Zellwegger's stupid, hill-billy ass, I may just hit somebody.

>-Directing

>"City of God" Fernando Meirelles

I imagine this going to Clint or Coppola, which would be great, but if you've seen "City of God", then you know there's no better choice.

>-Best picture

>"Lost in Translation"

Again, push come to shove, this is my choice. I enjoyed every minute of this one.

I finally saw Return of the King (a.k.a. the movie that wouldn't fucking end) today and hated it. I mean the effects and the battle scenes were FANTASTIC and there were some other moments I like very much, but other than that I found it to be one of the most tedious movies I've ever seen. How many times can Sean Astin cry in one movie? Why didn't these guys just make out already? I enjoyed The Two Towers much more.

but I'll leave my prediction as is because I do see the appeal in it for many people, and I do still believe it will win.

I'm gonna try to see Master and Commander tomorrow since that's the only one nominated that I haven't seen yet.

I loved it the 1st time I saw it but I guess it did get a little tedious the 2nd time. & I dont know wtf peeps are talkin bout when they say they're upset Astin didnt get a supporting Oscar nod. If Barry Pepper couldnt get 1 4 25th hour Astin dont come close 2 gettin 1 either.

Why didn't these

I've been thinkin that since the 1st 1 but they really did take it 2 another level this time.

I enjoyed The Two Towers much

See I was just watchin that again yesterday since it came on 1 of my HD channels & I guess I still need 2 see the extended version cuz other than the battle scenes this was the most tedious of the 3 2 me. The pacing is terrible.

hah nope not this time... like Zootown74 even mentioned below this movie had 44 different endings, each one more annoying than the next. I think the worst one was Hobbits jumping around on the bed as people entered the door one by one. I swear I had to keep from laughing out loud in the theater (especially when Astin walks in). It felt like joke, I was waiting for Gary Colemen to walk in next or something

>I loved it the 1st time I saw it but I guess it did get a

I'll go as far to say I liked it AND hated it but I probably wont be seeing it again because I don't want to have to suffer through that sap just to see the parts I liked. I'm glad I saw it on the big screen though.

& I dont know wtf peeps are
>talkin bout when they say they're upset Astin didnt get a
>supporting Oscar nod.

Astin's acting was Soap operaish at best. ALL he did was cry. There has to be at least 7 scenes where he's crying "waaaa Mr Froto please don't go! waaaaa!" There wasn't one thing good about his acting.

If Barry Pepper couldnt get 1 4 25th
>hour Astin dont come close 2 gettin 1 either.

See now Barry acted!

>Why didn't these

exactly! I almost felt as if they HAD to show him get married just so they can convince us that these two weren't in love. I'm still not convinced the way he and Froto continued to make goo goo eyes at each other.

I'm just going by my theater experiences. The Two Towers didn't bore me one bit. I don't think ROTK is a bad movie and I'm not saying it doesn't do the trilogy justice but people are running around calling this movie the greatest film of all time and the greatest epic ever and that's just horseshit.

Both his & Emanuel Lewis screen test are gonna be on the special edition DVD instead of a blooper reel.

Naw seriously tho the tacked on endings were pure Velveeta but the rest of the movie was far & above better than the previous 2 easily. ROTK should've ended w/ the birds carrying them off & it would've been perfect.

>Black Pearl"
>Ben Kingsley in "House of Sand and Fog"
>Jude Law in "Cold Mountain"
>Bill Murray in "Lost in Translation"
>Sean Penn in "Mystic River"

Sean Penn, "Mystic River." Yeah, it might have been actorly, and Depp was fun, but come on man.

>-Actor in a supporting role
>
>Alec Baldwin in "The Cooler"
>Benicio Del Toro in "21 Grams"
>Djimon Hounsou in "In America"
>Tim Robbins in "Mystic River"
>Ken Watanabe in "The Last Samurai"

I'm going out on a limb and taking Alec Baldwin. He was GREAT in The Cooler, and Hollywood loves a good comeback story. As far as that goes, Baldwin is Exhibit A.

>
>-Actress in a leading role
>
>Keisha Castle-Hughes in "Whale Rider"
>Diane Keaton in "Something's Gotta Give"
>Samantha Morton in "In America"
>Charlize Theron in "Monster"
>Naomi Watts in "21 Grams"

Charlize Theron, "Monster." Still refuse to see the movie, although (name dropping alert) I went to AFI with Patty, and kind-of know her. Anyway, this may be another instance of scenery chewing, award-winning work. Even though it'd be nice if Miss Castle-Hughes won. And Oscar does love little girls...but Charlize is my pick.

>-Actress in a supporting role
>
>Shohreh Aghdashloo in "House of Sand and Fog"
>Patricia Clarkson in "Pieces of April"
>Marcia Gay Harden in "Mystic River"
>Holly Hunter in "Thirteen"
>Renée Zellweger in "Cold Mountain"

Let's go with Shohreh Aghdashloo, "House of Sand and Fog" for the hell of it. Even though the movie's supposedly depressing as fuck (again, I haven't seen it), she's supposed to be great. And I'm violently rooting against Renee Zellweger, because she was in that piece-of-shit Cold Mountain. Did I tell y'all how much I hate that movie?

>-Directing

>"The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" Peter
>Jackson
>"Lost in Translation" Sofia Coppola
>"Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World" Peter Weir
>"Mystic River" Clint Eastwood

Peter Jackson, "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King." Actually, Peter Jackson for "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring," "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers," and "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King."

Sofia will get the nod for Best Original Screenplay.

>-Best picture
>
>"The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King"
>"Lost in Translation"
>"Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World"
>"Mystic River"
>"Seabiscuit"

"The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King." Yes, Myno, the movie (like "Bend it Like Beckham") had 63 different endings, but dammit, Jackson finished the trilogy off the right way, and as a whole, created a new style epic. Yeah, I just came up with that last bit on-the-fly. Anywho, this is like a trilogy achievement award for those involved in this thing. And again, he finished off the trilogy correctly (take note, Wachowski Brothers), even if he didn't exactly know how to *end* it correctly.

And "Master and Commander?"

Also, because I'm a writer, I have to say that (as I said earlier), Sofia will take Best Original Screenplay (even though the great Finding Nemo was classic by-the-numbers screenwriting), and Lord of the Rings will take Best Adapted Screenplay.

Also, the show will run 3 hours, 31 minutes. Bank on it!

I like Billy Crystal, but I didn't miss him when they had Steve Martin filling in. He was quick on the uptake and funny as hell.

Whoopi didn't really know what the hell she was doing and Dave Letterman looked like a dear in headlights or something.

straight up jokewise, Martin was funnier, but i do think Billy Crystal makes a better host.

The only one I've seen so far is Juliette Lewis for Raising Victor Vargas and yeah, that was a lame idea.

*edit* Oh no...Nia(?) Vardalos is doing Shattered Glass to the tune of Mr. Ed. But that thing she said about snorting coke was pretty funny.

Oh! You missed the great ode to Lost in Translation by Erika Christensen and... Michael McKean. They had Michael McKean, and it still wasn't funny. The reaction shots from Bill Murray were priceless. Sofia tried to look amused, and (the funniest moment of the segment) Francis was visibly mouthing the words to the song as it went on! Hilarious!

Yeah, that was funny. "Yeah, so I did some coke, so, here we go! Oh, whatever, like this is being televised. It's just us, right?"

OSCAR UPDATE: I'm watching some LA Oscar pre-show coverage, and they're talking to Michael McKean and Annette O'Toole in a limo on the way to the show.

I *heart* LA.

Okay, I just saw this and that *was* pretty funny, Francis mouthing along. But I thought the reactions from the In America cast when Zooey Deschanel and Kyra Sedgwick(???) did their song were even better. Jim Sheridan hung his head down and Samantha Morton looked like she wanted to leave the room!

but I didn't really hear the whole thing. It's funny because my mom told me about this (Bill Murray saying something like "that wouldn't be independent") no less than an hour ago. and the way she told it to me, she felt he was being serious. I took it the other way.

Even funnier is that the reason I was at her house was to pick up Lost in Translation which I had loaned her last week. She hated it so we were debating about that also lol.

On the actual broadcast itself, guess how long until someone tells a joke featuring the words "The Passion," "Jesus Christ," "Jew(s)," "Catholic(s)," and/or "Mel Gibson."

My prediction? If it's a Bruce Villanch-written show, it'll be the first joke after the intro film, which usually runs about 7 minutes, followed immediately by a gay joke. So that's my answer, 7 minutes.

Billy Crystal is Jewish, so they will probably tackle that right away.

(in case the link ever goes down)

"Destino"?! Oh No!
Disney execs are reportedly petrified about what they should do concerning the Oscar nomination that this Salvador Dalķ -- inspired animated short just received. Should the studio run an aggressive campaign in an effort to claim this acclaimed award, but then run the risk of allowing "Destino"'s executive producer -- Roy E. Disney -- the opportunity to speak directly to 200 million TV viewers worldwide?

I'm told that there was much rejoicing inside the Team Disney Burbank building yesterday as studio execs met to discuss all the Academy Award nominations that the Walt Disney Company just earned.

The suits were said to be particularly pleased with Johnny Depp's nomination as best actor in Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl." According to someone who was there, "The execs don't think that Depp has a snowball's chance in hell of actually winning the Oscar. But his nomination will make it that much easier for the Mouse to move a couple hundred thousand more copies of the 'Pirates' video and DVD. So the company will be happy to mount a campaign for Johnny if it will help support sales of the film. "

But when the subject of "Destino" came up, I'm told that representatives of Disney's PR department were petrified. They were said to be beside themselves, fretting about what they should do about this Oscar-nominated short.

"This is really a lose/lose situation for the Walt Disney Company," said one studio insider. "If the studio doesn't mount a really aggressive promotional campaign in order to claim a Best Animated Short Oscar for 'Destino,' Roy and Stanley get the right to complain that the Disney Company deliberately torpedoed this film's chance. Out of fear over what Walt's nephew might say once he gets up on stage at the Kodak Theatre."

"On the other hand, if Disney does put together a great Academy Award promotional campaign for 'Destino' and the short does actually win, all the suits still have to sit there and sweat. Wondering if Roy is going to use his opportunity -- standing there in front of over 200 million television viewers worldwide -- to talk about his campaign to remove Eisner."

Well, while Disney execs were worrying about what Walt's nephew might say were the former Disney board member to actually make it up onstage at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre, Roy E. Disney was being extremely gracious and kind as he spoke with the press about "Destino"'s Oscar nomination. In a statement that was released through his www.savedisney.com website, Roy was quoted as saying:

"WOW!!! Oscar® Nominations are one of those things you hope like the dickens for -- and even talk yourself into believing you could receive -- and then get in a really cold sweat when the day comes. Well, this time we got one, for Destino! I am absolutely thrilled to the bone. A lot of love and hard work went into this short film by a lot of dedicated people, and my deepest thanks go to each of them. They always say that 'just getting nominated is honor enough,' and while that's true, I would sure love to win the Oscar® itself!"

In a gesture that impressed many voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Roy's statement over at www.savedisney.com featured a direct link back to a web page which listed every person who worked on "Destino."

"Making sure that credit is given where credit is due? That's a pretty classy thing for Roy to do," said one animator (Who asked not to be name, out of fear of reprisals from Disney Company officials). "That's one of the reasons that 'Destino' 's got my vote."

"But -- to be honest, Jim -- the real reason that I'm voting for 'Destino' is I just have to hear what Roy will say should his short win," this animator concluded. "Will he take the high road and just thank the Academy for honoring Dalķ and Walt Disney's dream? Or will he take the low road and -- on ABC yet, the Disney Company's own television network -- lambaste Michael Eisner for being such a bonehead? Ah, there's no way I'm missing the Academy Awards this year!"

It's just this sort of sentiment that has execs at the Walt Disney Company concerned. Which is why they're reportedly looking into the rules of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to see who's actually allowed to accept the Oscar for Best Animated Short. Traditionally, it's just the film's director and producer who are allowed up onstage to accept the award and make a short statement. But then -- given the pivotal part Roy played in finally getting this 58-year-old production rolling once more -- it only stands to reason that Walt's nephew would also be allowed up on stage. To bask in the glory and -- perhaps -- make a brief comment of his own.

But -- for now -- Roy's just basking in the glory of having been nominated for such a prestigious honor. And the execs at the Walt Disney Company? They're allegedly already fretting about how they're going to get through the next few weeks. As the members of the Hollywood press corps continually badger the studio's PR department about what Disney's going to do about "Destino."

Me personally? I can't wait 'til February 29th -- Academy Award night -- to see how this all plays out.

City of God

falls under the "upsets I'd like to see win" category.

on another note I know City of God was ineligible for Best Foreign Film but was it eligible for Best Picture (Seeing that it's better than every film nominated)? I would love to have at least seen it be nominated. They could have bumped Sea Biscuit.

swipe:

City of God, a searing, documentary-like examination of a group of brutal street kids in a Brazilian housing project, had a brief release in Seattle in early 2003. It was Brazil's officially submitted film in the foreign-language category for last year's Oscars but did not make the final five.

Though "City of God" is ineligible this year in the foreign-language category, it was eligible in other categories due to its American release in 2003.

apparently a bunch of academy members walked out of a screening early in the movie writing it off as "too violent". This was before all the critical acclaim began to surface. Ebert's stance was basically how irresponsible it was of these people not to watch the entire film no matter what film it was. He was very vocal about it

As soft as Ebert has been with his reviews lately, it's things like this that make me still respect the hell out of the guy

P.S. It or American Splendor or even Mystic River should've won 4 Best Adapted Screenplay over ROTK. C-O-Nspiracy

>I just noticed Ebert is on abc so I switched lol

Lucky you...On ABC, I've got Chris Connelly and some chick I don't recognize (Maria something) talking to people on the red carpet.

Hmm...I'm not really feeling the not-quite-platinum blond haircolor Scarlett's been wearing lately. I prefer the strawberry blonde like in LIT. Not crazy about the dress she's wearing tonight, either.

I haven't seen Thirteen yet though (#1 in my queue), so I'm just going by what they showed for Patricia Clarkson's nomination. I forgot Jeremy Sisto was in it. Mmmmmm...

Keisha's dress reminds me of what Sandy wore to the dance in "Grease."

OMG, what is with Liv Tyler's hair!?!

Man he did a passion joke a lot sooner than I thought he would and boy did he use it in the wrong place.

Try to realise it's all within yourself
No-one else can make you change
And to see you're really only very small,
And life goes on within you and without you.

-she had been nominated before

-she's American

who else?

well, Marcia Gay Harden, but the first time was shocking enough; Oscar doesn't surprise twice.

certainly not cinematography, is it that hard to digitally add cheesy white light to everything in post production? Seabiscuit deserves it. I don't think they had a lock on sound and editing though. Pirates and Master and Commander had incredible sound and editing.

billy crystals. the man is an oscar genious. he should do it once every three years, that way we dont tire of him and get sick of him. every three years we will say, "its about time billy crystal hosted the oscars again."

i say the have conan next year, jon stewart the next, steve martin the next, then crystal again. you can alternate stewart and conan on an every 3rd year rotation. that sounds about right to me.

except, in my mind i actually swept. bill murray shoulda won. he definately did something no one else has done in my movie watching history.

i loved mystic river though. sean penn deserved it, and bill murray deserved it. in any other year, seperately each would have won. they both did something remarkable this year, the reinstilled my faith in the film industry, and hopefully i will soon have my own impact on the film industry after i get into cinema studies in university.

i cant wait till i can watch my lost in translation and mystic river dvd's back to back. im sure everytime i do that, i will change my mind as to which one of them actually deserved it. it will all depend on my mood. thats how impressed i was with both performances.

good show oscar. good show.

this wasnt about me winning or wanting to win, or sake of second place.

i jsut wanted the right people to win. they did. even though they were all mainstream, the right people did win. im torn the bill murray the he didnt, but i cant take that out on sean penn. penn let it all out in mystic river. fuck lord of the rings though, they deserved to win, but i just have trouble respecting bullies.

1.5/4 stars

-yawn

-alright, we neared record time, and with the epic ending credits probably surpassed that mark.

-yeah, bring back Steve Martin. when the best jokes of the nite are not scripted and come from the people accepting the award for Best Foreign Film, we have a problem. nothing was terribly unfunny (corny, yes) but not much either was very funny. there was a lot of middle of the pack business. it was a show rife with mediocrity, which was suiting for a nite that celebrated The Lord of The Rings trilogy. *rimshot*

-disappointed that Bill Murray couldn't win.

-disappointed that City of God didn't get any large spotlight.

-there were some pretty ladies in pretty dresses.

-many of the tributes were done in an entertaining enough fashion, honoring some people who truly deserved it.

-high water mark: the 7 or so minute stretch including Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, the song from Triplets of Belleville, Jack Black, and Will Ferrell.

-no surprises. everyone who was a favorite won. Billy Crystal sang.

-yawn.

HOLLYWOOD -- There's joy in Middle-earth tonight. "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" led the 76th annual Academy Awards with a record-tying 11 Oscars, including best picture and director. Vanquishing all opposition like the forces of Sauron, it won every category for which it was was nominated.

"It's a clean sweep!" exclaimed director Steven Spielberg as he looked inside the final envelope. "LOTR" tied with "Titanic" (1997) and "Ben-Hur" (1959) among all-time Oscar champions. It also became only the third movie to sweep every category in which it was nominated, after "Gigi'' (1958) and ''The Last Emperor'' (1987), which both went nine for nine.

"I'm so honored and relieved that the members of the academy that have supported us have seen past the trolls and the wizards and the Hobbits in recognizing fantasy this year,'' said director Peter Jackson. "LOTR" was also the first fantasy film to take the top prize.

The crowning chapter of the billion-dollar blockbuster trilogy was expected to win, and did, but most of its awards came in the technical categories, as Oscar host Billy Crystal quipped, "It's now official. There is no one left in New Zealand to thank."

In accepting the top prize, Peter Jackson tweaked Crystal's earlier remark by thanking even "the city councils of New Zealand," and added that Crystal "is welcome to come and make a film in New Zealand any time he wants."

The closest race

What was seen as the night's closest race, for best actor, was won by Sean Penn -- his first award after four nominations. The category was considered a toss-up between Penn and Bill Murray of "Lost in Translation."

Penn played a vengeful father in "Mystic River," which led in nominations in the major categories. Penn's speech, apart from a mild aside about weapons of mass destruction, was subdued and touching: "I really thank Clint Eastwood, professionally and humanly, for coming into my life."

The actor, often embroiled in controversy, thanked his wife, actress Robin Wright Penn, for "helping me on this roller-coaster ride I'm beginning into enjoy."

Another sure thing

Charlize Theron, considered the closest thing to a sure thing after "LOTR," won as best actress for her searing performance as serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Patty Jenkins' "Monster." It was a risky low-budget film by a first-time director, and Theron's physical transformation, using weight gain and specialized makeup, could have gone wrong -- but instead was completely convincing, as the beautiful actress from South Africa disappeared into the life of an abused and violent woman.

Among the many collaborators Theron mentioned, she gave a special thanks to makeup artist Toni G, "for transforming me," and added, "I know everyone in New Zealand has been thanked, so I want to thank everyone in South Africa, my homeland." She ended on the brink of tears, thanking "my mom, who sacrificed so much for me to live here."

Two more favorites, Tim Robbins and Renee Zellweger, won in the supporting actor categories.

Robbins, who won as expected, had made political comments on previous Oscar appearances, but this time simply ended with an appeal to victims of childhood abuse such as the character he plays in "Mystic River": "There is no shame in seeking help."

Zellweger won for "Cold Mountain," her third nomination, where she played a feisty frontier woman who steps in to help Nicole Kidman run a farm while all the men are off at war.

Zellweger's acceptance speech vibrated with her quick-talking, exuberant charm and then turned a little tearful as she thanked "my immigrant mom and dad -- thank you for never saying don't try."

Although "LOTR" piled up 11 Oscars, it was as if the film was such a complex achievement of special effects that the human elements got taken for granted. The result was that the middle of the telecast dragged somewhat as one platoon of "LOTR" technical artists after another marched onstage to thank director Jackson and long lists of their colleagues.

The "LOTR" lock on the craft awards was broken by Richard King's sound editing win for "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World." In addition, the cinematography prize went to Russell Boyd for his spectacular work on "Master and Commander," in a category in which "LOTR" was not nominated.

"LOTR" also won for adapted screenplay, for its conversion of the J.R.R. Tolkien classics into the epic trilogy. Authors Philippa Boyens and Jackson joined Fran Walsh (who also shared the best song Oscar with Howard Shore).

Sofia Coppola, who had just been onstage to present the Oscar for adapted screenplay, won for best original screenplay for "Lost in Translation." That made her family the second three-generation Oscar-winning family in history, after Walter, John and Anjelica Huston.

Her grandfather Carmine Coppola won for best musical score, her father Francis Ford Coppola is a multiple winner, and now Sofia joins what Francis calls "the family business."

The foreign-language film prize went to Canada's "The Barbarian Invasions," directed by Denys Arcand, a sad yet funny story of a raffish intellectual surrounded at his deathbed by his friends.

No surprise when "Finding Nemo," one of the year's top grossers, won as best animated film. But there was underlying tension, because everyone knew that the "Nemo" producing studio, Pixar, had recently ended its longtime association with Disney.

Although speeches by the presenters were advertised as being funnier this year, most of them, as usual, were boilerplate. There were exceptions: Robin Williams with his trademark linguistic mayhem, and Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson discussing Stiller's choice of a sweater instead of evening wear.

Thanks for the memories

Two of the funniest men in Hollywood history were honored: 18-time Oscar host Bob Hope, recalled by Tom Hanks with a montage of emceeing appearances, and director Blake Edwards.

The Edwards segment was a comic and emotional high point of the broadcast.

Jim Carrey introduced the tribute, recalling that he went through "a long Cato phase" after seeing the director's "A Shot in the Dark" (1964). He recalled Edwards' dramatic films such as "Days of Wine and Roses" (1962) and "Breakfast at Tiffany's" (1961) and added, "Everything else made us laugh like hell."

The montage of comic Edwards moments, many starring Peter Sellers, proved him correct.

Edwards' entrance was a show-stopper: Now somewhat slowed by age and illness, he used a battery-powered wheelchair to race across the stage and crash through a wall, tottering back onstage with Carrey's help, covered with plaster dust and muttering, "Don't touch my Oscar."

After a standing ovation, his acceptance speech, instead of a long list of names, consisted of anecdotes about funny little things that happened on his sets. It was a magic moment of humor and emotion. Thanking his "friends and foes," he added, "I couldn't have done it without the foes."

A salute to Kate the Great

Also touching: A special tribute to the late Katharine Hepburn by Julia Roberts, who recalled the actress' feisty, independent side. (The pants-wearing Hepburn, once asked by Barbara Walters if she even owned a skirt, replied, "I have one, Miss Walters. I'll wear it to your funeral.") The montage of clips from her films was a reminder of one of the longest and most versatile careers in the movies.

Then came another tribute, delivered by academy president Frank Pierson, to the late Gregory Peck, "a man of decency." The clips of course included moments from his most famous performance, as Atticus Finch in "To Kill a Mockingbird" (1962).

The Peck segment led into the annual montage honoring those in the Hollywood community who passed away during the year, from Art Carney, Buddy Hackett, Elia Kazan, Robert Stack, Alan Bates, Gregory Hines, Donald O'Connor, Ann Miller and Buddy Ebsen to (some wondered if she would be included) "Hitler's favorite filmmaker," Leni Riefenstahl.

Best documentary went to "The Fog of War," about the thoughts and memories of 85-year-old Robert McNamara. The "architect of Vietnam" was in a confessional and revelatory mood during the astonishing conversations of the film.

Director Errol Morris, often considered the leading documentarian of his generation, had never been nominated before, despite such major candidates as "The Thin Blue Line" (1988). In accepting, he was nothing if not frank: "I'd like to thank the academy for finally recognizing my films! I thought it would never happen!"

Morris added the evening's first overtly political comment: "Forty years ago this country went down a rabbit hole in Vietnam. I fear we're going down a rabbit hole again."

"I can't wait for his tax audit," ad-libbed Crystal.

High points of the musical performances: "Scarlet Tide," from "Cold Mountain," sung with solemn simplicity by Alison Krauss with composers Elvis Costello and T Bone Burnett as accompanists. And then Annie Lennox continuing the introspective mood with the ballad "Into the West," from "Lord of the Rings," which won.

Jack Black and Will Ferrell, giving the Oscar for best song, revealed that there are actually lyrics for that song the orchestra plays to hurry winners off stand, and they sang them: "No need to thank your parakeets ... You're boring."

Some might have wondered if that could be said for the telecast itself this year.
