"In theory, wouldn't TIVO destroy all of network tv's revenue?"

In theory if everyone had TIVO, no one would watch commercials and network tv would literally not make a dime. The whole industry would have the rug pulled out from under it. Shouldn't the networks be fighting tooth and nail to destroy TIVO?

Is the industry banking on the fact that most people are too lazy or don't want to spend the money on Tivo?

Let's say Tivo destroys traditional ad-revenue-based tv. Would that mean a lot of great television would become like cable pay-channels? (HBO, Cinemax, etc). Personally I hate ads so much I'd probably be willing to pay for those channels.

However as it stands now, I'm happy to Tivo network tv and never watch another ad in my life.

"But Lisa, not watching the commercials is like stealing tv!!" -Homer

To come up with some sort of ads to be shown while you Fast forward, it would be like a still shot but stay there while you're goin past the commericals. Not sure how thats comin but they are tryin.

Or advertisers will just be forced to make better commercials/use better music.

I watch the Tony Hawk video game commercial just to hear the Del song. I watch the hotjobs (or whatever) ad with the monkeys every time it's on.

Instead, advertisers will say people are ignoring our ads. We need to make them more obnoxious and intrusive. And then I'll get to write them!

they had a whole bit of Kevin using a new shredder, which he even noted was from STAPLES in the dialogue

they also ran a Staples ad of said shredder during commercial breaks, but if you skipped through that you'd still see the bit on the show

I personally thought the whole bit was terrible and jumped the shark, but that's where we're at right now

if you remember, Tivo used to have the option of automatically skipping commercials but you can't do that anymore

and who uses Tivo when you can just have a DVR?

but basically any cable provider that offers digital cable will let you rent a DVR for about 10 bucks a month

compared to a subscription to TiVo

since DVR's have become more available

but last time I checked it was about 20 bucks a month or 300 dollars for lifetime use...it's probably gone down to compete with cable providers

or rather, aligned with satellite companies like you just mentioned

you see more product placements now (including digitally imposed ones) as well as features during programming.

they embrace new technologies such as mobile and internet/streaming and sell advertising on those mediums.

advertisers still buy up all the inventory, so its not like they are worried too much about DVRs/Tivos since they are still purchasing time.

its stuff like a box of Frosted Flakes on the counter at the dinner table during a sitcom.

That stuff is digitally placed there now so these product placements can be sold to advertisers even after the programs were filmed which is pretty cool.

So its more visual then "hey, pass the Frosted Flakes... man, this is delicious"

last month they tested some new commercial where they had the logo stay on screen for the whole time so that you would see it easily while fast forwarding through it. There's definitely some new tricks being devised to push products.

when tiVO debut's advertizers and netwroks screamed bloody murder. it was the ned of western television as we knew it.

it never happened.
people still watch their favorite shows in their favorite time slots, and most people forget to ffrwd through commericials.

but yeah everyone adjusted., product placements, better commericals, etc. how many fedex kinko commericals remind you of the office. how funny are the stationary and office supply commercials in general?

the music industry should take note. see the new technology and adjust your tactics.

networks have partnered with credit card companys for exclusive content. phone services for webisodes. apple for itunes downloads before the show airs. streaming replaysin ontheir websites.

all kinds of ways to adkust and move with the industry instead of trying to punish those partaking int he revolution...

TV needs to adapt.

HBO's position is that you pay for it.

KPBS's is that you pay for it.

BBC's is that you pay for it.

And those three have the best programming in entertainment, sports, and comedies about tea.

even if you have basic cable, you're still paying for it...and no one is gonna pay an EXTRA fee to watch CBS...and like another poster said, HBO and the real pay networks have different rules....

i don't think DVr/Tivo is hurting the ad dollars as much as people proclaim...yeah, they could make more, but most people i know don't watch commercials whether they can fast foward or not....shit i know alotta people who just put the TV on mute or change the channel during commercials....
