"Grow up nerds. AKA Transformers: who gives a shit."

I liked Transformers when I was a little kid. At one point, I also tried eating dog food. Children are stupid.

Transformers was stupid show for little kids who were too naive to realize that it was a toy commercial.

So what Michael Bay changed the designs? Who gives a shit?

Fucking nerds trapped in their childhoods. I can't believe it. They'll talk your ear off about how you should take comic books or anime or cartoons or whatever seriously, and then they turn around and act like something like Transformers matters. Like they're defending something.

Listen, if Michael Bay was directing a film adaptation of Watchmen, then I can see getting annoyed. That's a work of literature. If he was directing a version of Batman, I can see being dissapointed. Some variations of that story have been relatively serious.

But this is TRANSFORMERS. You are a GROWN-UP NOW. This is like people being dissapointed that the film adaptation of Kaptain Kangaroo isn't gritty enough. Give me a break.

A few related notes:

The kids cartoons you watched as a kid probably sucked. There have been very few exceptions to this rule. If you are young enough to have watched Batman or Animaniacs, they didn't suck, but they were still unquestionably for kids and not grown adults.

Just because something is dark, violent or only appropriate for adults does not make it sophisticated. Just because kids shouldn't watch/read it doesn't mean adults should.

Superhero comics almost never rise above the level of a supermarket novel. There are a couple of exceptions to this, but don't act like you buying all these superhero comics every week is some literary endeavor. Comics as a medium are just as good as books, but they remain almost exclusively targeted at kids and perpetual adolescents.

If you have ever had even one serious thought about Pokemon, and you are over the age of 14, then go away.

I'm having a really hard time following your argument. If there is an argument hidden in this nonsense.

Are you saying that because adults work in the toy industry, adults who don't work in the toy industry should care about toys? Adults work in the manure industry, too.

I'm not saying this to be anti-nerd. I'm definately nerdy about some stuff myself. All I'm saying is that this is why the rest of the world doesn't respect nerd culture.

gonna be wack. Who didn't know that from the time they announced it?

Acting surprised or somehow injured because they're taking liberties with the story line just means you need to learn to LET THINGS GO.

I mean, who knows, it could be good. With Michael Bay in charge that's unlikely, but who am I to say. But acting like there's something important that needs to be protected? That's silly.

equating posting something on a message board with taking something seriously. As I see it, most of us here forget about half the shit we say five minutes after logging off.

But yeah, Transformers rank low on the cultural importance list, even the nerd cultural importance list.

It should be set in 1985 and all G1 character designs should stay intact.

This movie is an insult to everyone over 25. We are the ones who made Transformers the franchise it is. Who cares what today's kids want? FUCK THEM!

i actually think he's got the potential to be a great joker, given the right direction.

you ever get a chance, you should watch 'two hands', a local comedy/gangster flick with rose byrne and bryan brown. not so much for heath's acting- it's just a LOT of fun.

In response to Reply # 0

And this will be probably buried under Deluge's hilarious snark, but should be heard anyway.

First, the rational/longwinded response:

We all here in this forum, are pretty much old enough to know where such a movie or a comic book, or whatever are aimed, and (generally) don't spend our lives fretting over how crappy something is. We all recognize, the silliness of certain things in our childhoods to varying degrees, and are able to look at such things with adult eyes. We all here in this forum, by proxy of posting on an Internet message board devoted to some of the more nerdy mediums (TV, literature, and film) are at least a little "nerdy" in some way or fashion.

It's important to realize that being "grown" is not determined by how one entertains him or herself (generally); however, when one is "grown up", one has the freedom to determine to entertain him or herself anyway he or she may like. It's less "grown", rather, to throw stones at someone just because they may have passionate views either way about something they might have been interested in seeing but turned out to be garbage in the end. There's seriously nothing wrong with a 30-year old that decides to watch Pokemon and somehow might enjoy it. The Doc personally isn't entertained by such a show, but many of our parents ended up watching (and enjoying) television shows with us growing up, and might be inclined to watch it later on, without the kids' insistence. On another hand, one shouldn't be forced to like so-called "grown up" shit that doesn't interest him or her solely on their given age. If being "grown up" means The Doc has to sit through 70 minutes of artsy-fartsy, Skinemax-ed out, bloody, violent compost on film, then The Doc will gladly turn in the keys to his Volvo station wagon and sit at the end of the children's table.

Let The Doc be straight with you; he lives in an entertainment vacuum. Outside of NFL football, The Wire, and scattered television programs here and there, he doesn't watch TV, or definitely watch movies. Music nowadays sounds like noise to him, so he might be listening to some old(er) hip-hop or the likes of Bob James, Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock. With music especially, The Doc can be a cranky ass old man with what he likes, and he knows that no matter how many times he tells people how much he thinks "Sexyback" is the biggest piece of shit to ever be recorded in years, an aural turd if you will, they ain't gonna listen. People will still get drunk and dance to it, and what they eat won't make The Doc have to visit the bathroom anytime soon.

In short, People are gonna like what they like and dislike what they dislike. It's their right as "grown ups".

And now the concise/kneejerk/inflammatory response:

Kindly STFU. People are "grown" so they're gonna watch what they want, motherfucker(s). Anyone seriously bitching/ranting about other people ranting/bitching about something shitty on a message board which is designed for such behavior, regardless of the reason, is guilty of irrefutable mental faggotry. Fall back, and holla at an oncoming vehicle with your back turned, if it bothers you so much, fam; it ain't that serious.

Now you can come back with your requisite shots about how a "grown man" speaking in the third person as a quasi-alias on a message board is a loser DURHUUUUUURRRRHURRRHEEEEEEE -- but the fact of the matter is that you (and everyone else who makes posts like these in other forums) already lost, doggie.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

that isn't in and of itself on some 12-year-old shit. I sincerely appreciate it Claw.

That said...

* If people can take Transformers seriously, than I can take the issue of "nerdiness" and its pitfalls seriously.

* If TV, literature and film are the "nerdier" media, then what are the not-nerdy media?

Seriously, outside of SOAP, most of the film stuff I read here is about film nerds who take film seriously as art. I really respect that, even if Friday is way more interested in the films of the 30s and 40s than I am. The same with literature, even if Janey is more of a book nerd than I am. I think people respect me and Nick's passion for comedy (read: comedy nerdiness), because we know it's art. I'm fine with all of this and more.

And I don't even have a problem with people enjoying Transformers (and I could be using another example here, but Transformers is the current reference) in a nostalgic way. If you're watching it because it reminds you of how much you liked it as a kid, that's totally fine. I'm not into that, but whatever, it's fine.

But one of the problems with nerd culture (a cultural group that's maybe represented by the attendants of Comicon... as opposed to just nerdiness about something) is that it often steps way over that line. If you act like Transformers, the awful children's cartoon, was actually art, actually something that would be violated by a similarly silly film adaptation, that's absurd.

Another situation in which this might apply...

If you're claiming comics are art, you have to be willing to admit that The Watchman isn't representative. That most (certainly not all, but most) superhero comics are for adolescents and adults who either are remembering adolescence or never got past it. That if you go to a comic book convention, you'll meet a lot of folks who are in it for literature, and a lot who are cases of arrested development.

Fair enough.

The Doc just thinks there's too much attention invested in the personal lives, likes and dislikes of people, sometimes though. Like, why go that far? Why is it such an issue? Or to get to the point, what do you care?

>* If TV, literature and film are the "nerdier" media, then
>what are the not-nerdy media?

Actually, to tell the truth, there really isn't any media out there that is not "nerdy" when appreciated past a certain level. Anything that is consumable, is victim to nerdiness. The Doc should have thrown music in that box too... It's more socially acceptable to be nerdy about these sort of things, though.

Again, The Doc asks, why is it such an issue? Those people are just doing them. Yes, The Doc is disturbed at times by the real life "Comic Book Guys", the "Man-Fayes", and some of the weirdos you might see at a comic book convention. And hell, he knows some people older than he hung up on some real PB&J out there. But at the end of the day, what they eat doesn't make The Doc shit, to be blunt. Some very visible, functional members of society attend those things, and as long as they ain't crapping on The Doc's street corner, shootin' up people, and robbing banks, they're all harmless. Is that population one that you personally want to emulate? No. Not one The Doc wants to, either (well, to an extent). But at the end of the day, it may not even matter.

Like it or not, it may not be artsy fartsy, but TF and the like actually are -art-. It may be silly, mindless art, but it is art nonetheless. Using the Transformers example: Somewhere, somewhere got the idea to repackage an defunct toyline, slap character bios on them, come up with an elaborate back story, and mass market them...jump starting something The Doc didn't think would be more than a footnote in people's memories 20 years later.

Now it's reached the kind of notoriety of a Star Trek, a Star Wars...at least in the US market, as the original consumers/target market are of age and can look back at it w/o the rose-colored glasses. It takes a certain bit of talent to make people actually give a damn that much about something 20 years after the fact. In that way, it is an art. (A lost one, rather).

Would one hang up a picture of Optimus Prime blasting Megatron halfway to Cybertron in the Guggenheim? Probably not. Would they have a likeness of Grimlock up in the Smithsonian? Nope. Fans wouldn't probably even seriously consider such a thing. Even more "serious" programming wouldn't end up the same box as a fine motion picture (historically used as period pieces), or a reknowned book, or even The Doc's favorite Herbie Hancock album, but it's still a form of art. "Art" is kind of an abstract concept, now that The Doc thinks about it.

>Another situation in which this might apply...
>
>If you're claiming comics are art, you have to be willing to

Again, The Doc doesn't really buy into the "artsy-fartsy" definition of the abstract concept of art. To say that adults that read superhero comics are a case of arrested development (not all, but a good number) is troubling; maybe they just find such things entertaining regardless of what they thought about such things as a kid. There are a lot of reasons why an adult (or a child or adolescent) might read such things. They may like a good old good-guy versus bad guy story. They might like the visual art within...Considering the darker nature of comics today, and the subtle social commentary made in some notables in the past, The Doc would venture to believe that a lot of the stuff that the very-adult writers inject into their works go well over the heads of their target audiences.

The Doc just wondered where this stigma originated. When a story is pictorial, it automatically is devalued versus the case if it were without the visual representation in a novel or something of the sort. Granted, not every comic book out there is high-brow literature. But it shouldn't be, and it doesn't make it any less artful.

In short, yes, the people that can't get over the Joker jobbing over the good-guy-of-the week are a "problem", but in the grand scheme of things, they're harmless. They're no different from the people who got pissed off that Stringer Bell jobbed out in last season of The Wire and won't get over it.

Too much time/attention invested in that sort of thing, ITDO.

But when it comes to people spending time on this, we could do a comparison. I have made what, 12 posts here on the subject? Trying to say something thoughtful (if provocative? Deluge is so hurt that he's made like 200 and counting.

I'm just dissapointed, in a way. Because there's a lot of nerd shit that I love (again, witness the guests on my show). But so much of the nerd population never gets past the 12-year-old stuff that it holds the rest of us back.

First of all I agree that Transformers was a shitty toy commercial that has nothing to really lose in terms of artistic integrity. That said, sometimes it's just fun to hate on shit, plain and simple. Don't confuse all the 'haters' for arrested development cases who are truly losing sleep over this movie. The redesigns look silly to me (this has more to do with being a designer than being emotionally attached to the cartoons) and from a marketing standpoint I don't completely understand it, but beyond that I really don't care. Anyway...

Here's where I think you lose your footing:

>Another situation in which this might apply...
>
>If you're claiming comics are art, you have to be willing to
>admit that The Watchman isn't representative. That most
>(certainly not all, but most) superhero comics are for

First of all, we've become such a nation of perpetual adolescents, it seems kind of silly to start drawing lines of distinction here. The average American spends 120 hours a month in front of a TV set. We're spending more and more $ on entertainment every year. Is the 40 year old Trekkie living in his mom's basement any worse than the 40 year old Fellini head living in his Dad's pool house? We're a long way from the days where people got married at 12 and spent the rest of their days working on the farm. You're touching on a very real issue here, but don't make the mistake of limiting it to nostalgic Transformer fans on a message board. 'Grown ups' in general are an endangered species.

And you're right, a lot of arrested development cases are reading comics in a sad attempt to re-enter the womb of pre-adolescence. But maybe it's the stigma attached to the medium attracting these types in the first place. 'Watchmen' is no more representative of comics than 'Citizen Kane' is of film.
And yet, when I say 'film', the first thing that comes to mind probably isn't 'Dunston Checks In' or something.
And when I say 'literature', you don't think of crappy supermarket romance novels.
But when I say 'comics', the first image that pops into everyone's head is grown men in capes and tights jumping around punching things. Why is that, I wonder?

Same question The Doc asked almost verbatim. Why the stigma? It's almost like a "what came first, the chicken or the egg?" sort of question. Is it because of the "arrested development" types on whom general observers and the media zoom in...or because of what sells?

Guess it got lost in the deluge of...Deluge posts.

I think you made some good points up there. The very act of defining a person by how they entertain themselves strikes me as completely misguided and more than a little immature. At the end of the day I am not my DVD collection, the latest CD I purchased, or the stack of comics next to my 1/4 scale solid pewter Captain Sulu bust(kidding!!) None of that shit has anything to do with being a 'grown up', I can assure you.

But then, as we're all sitting here telling dude to not take the Transformer hate seriously, we must in turn extend that same olive branch back at him, and not take his initial post too seriously either. Chalk it up to another huffy 'look at me!' bait post and move on. Cease and desist with the inboxing of death threats and what not.

As for the American comics stigma...well, that's a whole post unto itself. As one of the most passionate comic heads on this board, I'm not gonna front like the stigma isn't deserved in a LOT of cases. But you're right, there's definitely some Chicken v. Egging going on there.

I don't wanna get too sidetracked here, 'cuz I wanna see Jesse's response to my original post. I don't disagree with him one iota about The Transformer franchise (but boy, you sure gotta watch how you phrase THOSE feelings around here!) I just think he's being shortsighted about what's really going on here.

but I would argue that part of the problem is that people are using whatever it is they're nerdy about to define themselves, in whole or in part. That, I think, is why the mainstream sees them as defined by their nerdinesses.

the reason is that Dunston Checks In is just a silly movie for people who don't want to be challenged. There are no film nerds taking Dunston Checks In seriously.

But there are certainly lots of comics nerds who take... I dunno, Hawkman Vs. Green Arrow really seriously. And that's the biggest reason that 30-40 years after comics started really being an art form, the mainstream hasn't accepted them.

It's like the Battlestar Galactica nerds who got upset about the new Battlestar Galactica. God forbid someone alter their awful schlockfest's contiuity in order to make something that's actually art. They're defending it because they're locked in a 12-year-old mindset, not because they're fond of it from their youth, or because the toys are valuable (seems to be jetblacks argument) or whatever.

All I'm saying is that if you're going to be passionate about something, be passionate about something with merit. Especially if you want other people to take you seriously.

Right. I see the point you're driving at, but on the basest of levels, it's still a film. It meets all the requirements of the medium. But on a knee-jerk/word association level, that's generally not the first thing that comes to mind when one hears the word 'film'.

>But there are certainly lots of comics nerds who take... I
>dunno, Hawkman Vs. Green Arrow really seriously. And that's
>the biggest reason that 30-40 years after comics started

I dunno if that's the 'biggest' reason. But it's certainly a factor. I've been reading up a lot on the history of American comics, and it seems like the stigma was sort of built in before Superman was ever committed to paper. The people creating the things were themselves crooks and societal outcasts. How could the end result NOT be stigmatized? I'll probably post more on this later once I've got more research under my belt.

(Also, this wouldn't even be a contest. HAWKMAN ALL DAY BABY!!!)

I'm torn on the issue though. It's frustrating when we as comic readers cannot delineate between the Dunston Checks In's vs. the Citizen Kane's of the medium. But in a way it's kind of charming and pure, too.

>It's like the Battlestar Galactica nerds who got upset about

People feel this way about BSG? Inconceivable!

Anyways, don't even get me started on nostalgia. Especially when it's 20-30 somethings pining for shit that hasn't even had a chance to collect DUST yet.

>All I'm saying is that if you're going to be passionate about
>something, be passionate about something with merit.

Well here's the big bad slippery slope: Who decides what does and doesn't have merit?

>Especially if you want other people to take you seriously.

Wait a minute...I thought the whole point of nerdism was saying 'fuck other people' and just liking what you like!

Now, I’m not one to denigrate anyone else’s interests. I have plenty of nerdy stuff that I get worked up about. But, when it comes to Transformers, Jesse makes a good point in his much-maligned post above. The toys were kinda cool. The comics were average. The cartoon sucked. From what I’ve seen, more recent cartoon versions of Transformers have sucked even worse. I can’t see why folks would care much about the upcoming big-budget film at this stage, apart from clinging to some feeling of nostalgia for the toys.

As for Deluge’s ongoing series of analogies, I think he’s missed the mark somewhat. I’d say that the current uproar is more akin to “Making a My Little Pony movie, but Butterscotch is a unicorn instead of a pegasus” or “A remake of He-Man where Orko wears a different hat”. In other words, I’d place it squarely in the “who cares” category. Frankly, I’m more upset about the recently re-designed Popples than the fact that Megatron is no longer a gun.

But, this all comes down to personal opinion and taste. When I was growing up, I played with Transformers. I read superhero comics (Green Lantern was a favorite for some reason). When I hit high-school age, I got into that self-conscious teenage mindset where you’re trying to fit in and be cool, and decided I was now too “grown up” to read comics. The toys just stopped being fun to play with, and I was never about collecting stuff mint-in-box, so my Transformers toys wound up packed away in the basement. Then when I was in college, I had this realization that being a nerd was actually the most honest and respectable thing on earth. My theory went like this: We’re all pathetic awkward dorks at heart, and anyone who acts “cool” is full of shit. It’s just the natural state of the human condition. The people who embrace their inner dorkiness are the ones we should be looking up to, not a bunch of self-conscious posers who front like they aren’t geeks but they really are. So, I started embracing my nerdier tendencies as an adult, and returning to some of my childhood interests. But, I’ve discovered that I’m far more interested in the sci-fi and fantasy genres than traditional superhero comics. I’m down with underground artsy Daniel Clowes type comix, but the DC/Marvel shit does nothing for me. I can’t claim to understand the passion some adults have for X-Men. But, I’m not about to say my Lord of the Rings fascination is any more respectable or defensible.

So, while I agree with America’s Radio Sweetheart about the wackness of Transformers, I’m not about to tell anyone else how to get their geek on. If anything, I would urge all you pathetic dweebs NOT to grow up. I know I don’t plan on doing so.

peace,
murph

I respect nerds and geeks and am one myself in several areas. I am NOT anti-nerd. Obviously I am pro-nerd, look at the guests on my radio show.

What I don't respect is the part of nerd/geekiness that's about 13-year-old shit. If you're going to be unhealthily into something, it should be about something substantial, about art, however you might define it. Not just about what you liked when you were 9.

who's to say Transformers can't be considered art? or can't be elevated past the "it's just a big long toy commercial" tag? TFs have come a long way since the 1980s my friend. you probably never saw it, but there was a little show in the mid-to-late 90's called "Beast Wars: Transformers". this show single-handedly made TFs a respectable franchise within the scifi world, as a SHOW first and foremost. for a kid's show, it had great characters, thick plots which unravelled over the course of 3 seasons, it had plenty of violence and death. most of it all it heavily incorporated the original TFs show into its own, establishing itself as part of the official TFs canon. trust me there are plenty of reasons to be a TFs fan. personally i was never about the toys, i was always about the show. the original toon was childish looking back on it now, but it set up a great mythology. the movie was great cos it upped the ante. and Beast Wars was a CLASSIC n i defy anyone to refute that claim ("code of hero" and "the agenda" trilogy are enough to argue this point).

there's plenty of reasons why a TFs fan would be a fan. they love the toys, the lore, the mythology, the show, the characters, they love the sense of history that's involved in the story. whatever.
okay u said urself, unhealthy obsessions should be about art, "however you might define it". isn't that just it? isn't art subjective? who exactly are you to tell us or anyone else what their unhealthy obsession *should* be about? aren't a lot of the guests on your show from comedy? can you consider their craft an 'art'? some might not.

i think ur about 20 years too late to be arguing this crap. shoulda woulda coulda. this is what it is! lol. you're not going to change anything, trust me. TFs is an institution. it's firmly entrenched in pop culture. has been for decades! specially recently with the resurgence of the popularity of the 80s. and then a TFs MOVIE is announced? first of all, as a longtime fan (and most are), how hyped would u be. second, considering that the filmmakers and producers have 20 years of rich history to draw on, these recent re-designs of characters have been like a knife in the back. TRANSFORMERS has its own take on what 'robots in disguise' should look like. i could understand slight tweakings and re-modelings that wouldn't stray too far from the original concepts, but these new movie designs?? getting past the fact that they're just atrocious in general, they don't represent the characters, or the history of the franchise at all. as a fan/nerd/watever label you want to put on it, wouldn't u be upset??

there is no validity in singling out and painting TFs fans as children who never grew up by pointing out how upset we are over the direction the movie is taking. you can take ANY well-established franchise with a loyal fanbase and make a fucked up movie, it'll get the same response. i mean even moving away from animation and geekdom, these new designs of the TFs characters are like akin to making a feature length film of The Office, and replacing every single character with a new actor. if u can't see it through the nerd's eyes, look at it through that simple view. fan response has been so negative because they couldn't even get the SIMPLE things right, like character designs and colours, none of which bodes well for the rest of the movie at large. and these aren't asinine or nerdy things to ask for, this has been the hallmark of TFs since jump! Optimus and Megatron look a certain way. it's not EVEN about nostalgia at this point, it's about the SIMPLE DETAILS. it's like making a film from a novel, and not staying true to the source. i know this rarely happens anyway, but removing those things which are hallmarks of a character is just a bastardisation of the text. that's why you have these angry fans on the net now calling for Michael Bay's head. it is very easy NOT to fuck up a TFs movie, because you have the source material all around you, and there's so much of it to draw from. what if Nolan didn't use the source material which he utilised for Batman Begins? and tried 'his own vision'? we wouldn't have gotten the film we got.

i think criticising the fans that they should've expected this to happen is fair, it's not like anything gets done right in Hollywood all the time. but criticising a whole fanbase? you're out of your goddamn mind lol. you're basically spitting on 20+ years of history. TFs has existed in comics as well television, with emphasis on story and characters. with what arrogance do you proclaim TFs not be a work of literature? cos it's not high art? lol please.
you're also boxing ALL TFs fans into this one category. me? i was BORN in 1984. i barely caught a few episodes of Transformers on TV. i had a few toys. my older brother was more into it than i was, but i was just too young. then in the 90s, "Beast Wars" happened. which got me retroactively into the original series. so it's not just ppl who were teens in the 80s who are fans, there are 80s babies like me who got into the franchise MUCH later on. and with the continued success of TFs in its various incarnations over recent years, it's probably attracted even more of a diverse fanbase. but mark my words, no matter how old the fan, anyone that calls themselves a fan of TFs knows that these new movie designs are FUCKED.UP.
simple as that man! we don't wanna see Bionicle: The Movie. we wanna be paying our cash to see fucking TRANSFORMERS! lol.

"Beast Wars" was such a hit because the two head writers of the show, in their second season 3-part finale, enlisted the help of a longtime TF's fan, who became a consultant for the show. i knew the guy for years before he hopped onto the show. he still runs the same website, www.bwtf.com. his name's Benson Yee. the show's creators were pretty involved in the online community, and they had the show's integrity in mind when they reached out & asked for assistance from a knowledgeable source within the fanbase. so wtf are the filmmakers doing???

there is plenty of reason to be an upset TFs fan right now man. and it's all valid. i think the point is u have to be a FAN to be this involved and be reacting this emotionally to all this news. you're obviously not, so leave it the hell alone! lol.

i was heavily involved with the online community during Beast Wars' run, cos around when the show started is when we first hooked up the Innanet at home. kinda like im involved here on okp i guess, but i was way more visible and opinionated in online BW circles. shit, do a google search for "BeastMoJo", my old nickname. you'll still find traces of my obsession. i think it's a section of the TFs history that's overlooked by ppl like Mr. Jesse Thorn (i feel dumb calling him "PolarbearToenails" lol), cos what he's doing is using the G1 cartoons to judge the whole franchise and its fanbase. i doubt he's even peeped Beast Wars. it will most definitely change your opinion and perspective on Transformers as a legitimate mythology within science fiction.

Making a distinction between nerds who are into cool stuff and nerds who are into childish stuff is still passing judgment on their taste. I actually have respect for the guy who has an obsessive collection and knowledge of Matchbox cars, or the guy who lives with his parents and builds elaborate Lego models when he's in his mid-30's. I've chosen a different path in my life, and I'm not that obsessive in my nerdy interests. But, in a way, I look up to those perpetual adolescents you are railing against in this discussion. Do I understand their level of obsession? No, but I do respect it.

As for the issue of "art vs. commerce" or "art vs. kid's stuff" I think it is a dead-end. Those distinctions are not easy to make, and are subjective to the point of being meaningless. When does any mass-produced media become art? When does a children's book or movie become something more? You're ultimately trying to arbitrate between good and bad art, which is a slippery slope. Are my reasons for still loving Pee-Wee's Playhouse really more respectable than someone else's reasons for still loving X-Men? I could make an excuse about Gary Panter's brilliant set designs or the subtle subversiveness of the show, but to a large extent, I actually love Pee-Wee because I used to watch it Saturday mornings as a kid.

In the case of the Transformers, I'd argue that they are "art" in a way. The characters and mythology are an extension of the Japanese pop-culture tradition of giant robots, which has spawned everything from Miyazaki's movies and the Iron Giant (on one end of the spectrum) to Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (on the other). Where do Transformers fit in? I'd say they aren't the finest example of the genre. But, I'm cool with araqual having a clearly different opinion. Just because I "outgrew" Transformers when I hit puberty doesn't mean someone else is wrong for loving it still.

peace,
murph

Comics are not for kids; check your facts, homie. They are just as valid as any other type of entertainment medium. Is it wrong to enjoy fiction and/or use the imagination as we age? No!

You are a bitter ass mofo who is stuck in the real world and can't escape the daily and "hard" trappings of the real world. Blow off some anger and have fun, clown!

Also, entertainmet is entertainment. It's not real life. With that said, people do take isht way too seriously; I laugh.

With your logic it appears you are saying, "all non-fiction is lame and unnecessary. If you enjoy it, you are delusional." Come on, man!

It doesn't hurt to ecape the reality we are a part of.

...radio show! I'll be the first to admit, I love me TSOYA but dude, it's a college radio show and....podcast! If anyone here is delusional, it's you. Do you really expect to make money in this market? Unless your pod-cast gets picked up on XM or something you'll remain an "underground" show. In the grand scheme of things, nobody cares.

I bet you had a terrible childhood, you fiction hating square!

oddness. A singularly focused individual is almost always a 'character,' you know? On the eccentric side.

My take on this is the folks you are talking about giving nerddom a bad name are the ones who are so, uh, nerdy in their pursuit of choice that they have a hard time relating to folks who DON'T appreciate their preferred obsession. As you say, they let their obsession define them.

The comics diehards and the anime otaku are the definitive character studies, but I'm convinced that the archetype can apply to any hobby taken to extremes. I dabble in lots of different hobbies, and far & away the weirdest folks are the really serious gardeners, with the old-time musicians running a distant second.

dude is on attack mode with regards to Transformrs. why shouldn't the fan response be any less passionate/heated? can't his original post be considered an act of 'oddness' as well? he clearly is obsessed with denegrating Transformers (or at least according to your views). when there are TF fans on this board peacefully, and in a non-fanatic fashion, practicing their fandom, and this one guy comes outta nowhere with a post that shits on Transformers, isn't that an act of obsessive nerdiness in itself? that we bothered someone so much by just staying within our own lil TFs post, chattering amongst ourselves, and this guy feels what he feels so fervently that he has to make a post speaking out about the shittiness of TFs? why? what's the motivation?

and before u psychoanalyse me as well lol, im only responding so much in this post because it seems a little unfair to call ANYone on this board a nerd in a derogatory manner. EVERY SINGLE MOTHERFUCKER on this website is guilty of being A FUCKING GEEK! some just can't accept the fact, and ppl like the original poster feel like some forms of geekdom are a higher art over others. it's all the fucking same shit because it all produces the same results within fandom. so wat exctly is so different?

can we let this post die already? y'all mofos lost this battle of the nerds melais like, last week.
