Did the Marvel editors even try to explain the reasoning behind that absolute fiasco and detail exactly what shit they were smoking when they came up with the entire debacle? I mean, seriously?

Better yet, did they authorize reparation paid for all Spidey fans that were duped into buying those issues?

Hell, man, bringing back that old clone story was a GREAT idea! (For maybe a 3 or4 parter, anyways) This one really got off to a good start, but they just dragged it out for way too long. What were they thinking? I'm not sure what happened, either. If ANY such answers can be found on the internet, I'd bet it would be here :

http://www.newcomicreviews.com/GHM/specials/LifeOfReilly/1.html

Dude wrote a THIRTY FIVE chapter article about the entire fiasco. I've personally never read it. I am amazed it exists.

I actually purchased all of the #0 issues that they put out and enjoyed a number of them. This was kinda like a smaller scale Crisis on Infinite earths in that it allowed DC to clean up some of the chronological problems.

They tried to fix Hawkman (but I beleive they failed), the were able to reboot the Legion (a good idea at that point) and the Justice Society was fixed and brought up to date.

There was some dumb stuff in there but I thought they did a pretty good job of explaining things.

* Force Works

* Extreme Justice

* Justice League Europe was pushing it but the Justice League Task Force was a superbly corny idea.

* Doing away with Booster Gold, Blue Beetle (RIP), Fire, Guy Gardener, etc, as a team. They could have formed their own group. No one was using the name "Outsiders" at the time and it would have been appropriate for that crew.

* Rob Liefeld's version of Hawkeye (in the Heroes Reborn) was painfully bad, even for him.

* The neverending Legion reboots

...Now raise your other hand if you own three or more.

Remember those black polybags? Remember how cats were paying upwards of 70 bucks for those joints when they first dropped? The real tragedy is I could have sold mine to some schmuck for 50 bucks a pop, but no, I had to hold onto them. After all, they were only going to go up in value.

Yep, the black sealed one with a t-shirt (is that what came with it?) and a regular one.

How the hell would I know? If you opened it, it became WORTHLESS!!!!!!!!!

Actually I think there was like, a black armband in there so you could 'mourn' Superman's loss. The only think I mourn is a misspent youth reading shitty comic books.

Ha, more like three or four months of shitty comic books, if you count the ensuing aftermath, and the launching of Superboy, and Cyborg Superman or whatever.

That whole debacle did teach me a valuable object lesson, however. I wasn't okie-doked into buying the crap that came after "Knightfall"; whatever they called the Az-Bat issues and "Knight's End."

Actually, I did buy the final issue of the Az-Bat saga. The second-lamest way to end a lame-ass storyline. (Only trumped by the aforementioned "Armagedon 2001."

* I'll give Liefeld credit...a couple of Youngblood characters had promise. But Rob just doesn't have what it takes to develop them.

* Badrock?

* Knight Sabre (just thinking of the character and that name makes me laugh out loud)?

* Brigade...what a horrendous comic, in every way shape & form.

* WildStorm's section of the Image universe had promise. But they tried to do too much too fast.

* Did Angela, the Violater, Sam & Twitch really deserve their own books?

* Wildstar...another truly bad book.

* Freak Force...bad.

Co-sign. He could have done so much with Die Hard, Chapel, and Combat were all cool characters he did nothing with.

(As a side note, the Wikipedia entry on Yungblood is kind of wild, especially the note on Chapel: "a government agent whose mission was to have unprotected sex with as many black women as possible, thereby spreading HIV as a means of population control." I honestly can't remember if that's true or not)

Should have kept it to WildCats and Stormwatch, maybe Gen 13.

The Violator mini-series was kind of funny. The others, no.

> * Wildstar...another truly bad book.

Didn't mind it so much, but it went no where.

Wait, is that the Savage Dragon offshoot? If so, that one rocked!

...I have a strange affinity to the first half of Knighfall, Bane's sorry-ass non-withstanding. I kind of liked the idea of an already mentally and physically exhausted Batman running around Gotham, trying to capture all of his rogue gallery, with absolutely no prep time. I especially liked the parts where Joker and Scarecrow teamed up to kidnap the mayor and try to drive Batman crazy and run Gotham into the ground. I've actually thought that might have made a good idea for a Batman movie. Hmmmmm...

But after he faces off with Scarecrow and Joker in the tunnel, and especially after Batman breaks his back, it all goes into the shitter REALLY quickly.

We touched on the armor trend in the other 90s thread, but it really belongs here. Batman, Spiderman, Booster Gold, Captain America, the list goes on. The 90's held a certain fascination for shiny objects.

Plus the leather jacket w/ rolled up sleeves trend. Why were characters wearing jackets over their costumes? Poor self body image?

How about the headgear? What exactly is that thing Gambit is wearing on his dome? A jockstrap? Electro-Berry Blue™ Superman had one too.

And can anybody explain to me why The Hulk is wearing a tank top in this picture?

I still think Hawkeye's bout with Armour is the worst ever.

The only guy to rock this sucessfully was Grifter. He was a bad-ass though, and the trench-coat fit hi costume design.

Grizzly (from Cable's crew, the Six Pack) and Marvel-Girl wore one of those too. I think they a super-hero fashion accesory to help keep their hair out of their face while they fought. They still looked really lame.

But I remember walking into a shop just out of curiosity, to get an idea of what I was missing. I remember flipping through that shit for a few seconds. It was kinda bittersweet, like that feeling you get when you run into an old girlfriend after years of not speaking. Only now she's morbidly obese, has seven kids and a mustache.

GOD that shit was dragged out. As if they didn't have enough loose ends to tie up. Really, the whole presence of Bishop just sort of killed the party for me. Never got into this, but it seemed to be the very thesis of style-over-subtance comic making that ruled the day. There was zero nutritional value in these books. The literary equivalent of taffy. No wait, I like taffy.

Wait, Ghost Rider was in the Fantastic Four? When? I assume you're talking about Ghost Riderr, and not the Punisher; Frank is an even BIGGER stretch to join the F4.

Permed mullet aside, Bishop was pretty cool though. I'm always partial to heavily armed badasses. But yeah, the X-Traitor shit was stupid. And yes, Onslaught again fucked everything up.

But Gen 13 had Raindance, a really hot lesbian who liked to walk around nekkid. And she was a lesbian. So that comic gets a pass. Hot lesbians>>>>nutrional value.

It was like a two issue thing. Soemthing happened to the real FF, and ghost rider, punisher, spiderman and someone else (hulk?) were somehow thrown together to help out.

That story did nothing to sort out Madelyne Pryor.

Wait, she's Jean Gray's twin sister. No, wait, she's a clone that Mr. Sinister created. No, wait, she the Goblyn Queen. No, wait, she's really Phoenix!!!

That shit still makes my head hurt. I couldn't tell you right now if you a gun to my head if she was even alive or dead.

I thought they threw that it at the last second, right before she "died" or whatever.

The only really cool part of the series was turning NY into a demonic wasteland and Cyclops blowing Mr. Sinister into bone-chips. Which was negated by the fact that Mr. Sinister appearently clones himself too.

It was really cool, just always really late. Hard to get the story going as a result.

>Brigade
Complete shit. Well, maybe cool for an issue or two, but then disintegrated into complete shit.

>Spawn
Good as long as it was drawn by McFarlane. Though 5 issues with 5 different writers was a dumb idea. I found the David Sims penned comic really pointless. Then they wrote off most of the guest written issues as a dream sequences. Lame.

I actually enjoyed those books but i remember going to store and seeing books that were 3 months old selling for forty five dollars. THen jim shooter left to create Defiant which really REALLY sucked - well, i kinda liked plasm - or whatever the fuck it was called...

And I think as a result dealers fell into the hype machine and were charging 700 bucks for Harbinger #1. Right.

But in all honesty, I fell into the hype machine too. I bought a lot of Valiant titles. Of course, they hooked me in before the hype got out of control, because I recognized characters like Magnus Robot Fighter and Solar Man of the Atom from my Dad's stash. I thought it was cool that they were brought back like that. Can't remember if it was Dell or Gold Key that put those books out...But yeah, I liked a lot of Valiant titles. Now whether or not they were actually any good, it's tough to say. I have some Archer & Armstrong on my computer, but I'm a little afraid to read them...

I liked the ifrst one (with some of the WildC.A.T.s and Brigade) and the third one (with the rest of the Wildtorm characters). The other two sucked ass. There was no real point other than two hype up both lines or something. I think it did feature the first appearance of Gen 13 in any format.

They put out Green Hornet, Racer X, and I think maybe an Astro Boy title. Those were showing up at my grocery store for a while.

Oh!! Who remembers Neal Adams' brainchild, Continuity Comics? Let's see, there was Armor, Megalith, Skate Boy, and CyberRAD... truly awful names for a truly awful decade.

I did have this one issue of Armor with a very graphic depiction of a character getting his hand cut off. That just seemed so cool to me at the time.

Glossy paper seemed to just be a reason to charge the same as magazines for something that was only 32 pages, which I found to be a ripoff, and was one cause for me eventually quitting collecting.

I suppose if you wanna get technical about it, glossy paper might be heavier and thus more expensive to ship...

But yeah, I don't think gloss reasonable justifies the price hike.

And yes, it does suck.

...with the enormous breasts, ant-sized waists and everything. Not to sound PC but John Romita SR's drawings of Mary Jane and Gwen Stacey in the 60's SHOULD always be the blueprint, not that Jim Lee/Liefeld stuff.

Oversized muscles and guns-this has already been mentioned but I HATED it.

Crossovers in general. This came along in the late 80's to be fair but it was the thing that killed Marvel in sweden (we were always 2-3 years behind) in the early 90's. Since only three magazines were published monthly here (Spiderman, X-men and Marvels Universum/Mega-marvel-an anthology styled magazine), it became impossible to follow what was going on in the stories and I couldn't afford to pick up all the american imports needed to fill in the holes. Maybe I would have thought differently if I was american but really, most of those storylines sucked.
