"The Academy Awards Post 2007"

First off, everyone should join Zootown's Pick Em game:

http://predict.oscar.go.com/predict/frontpage

League name: Okayplayer PTP 2007
Password: okayplayer

Secondly, post your picks here for posterity's sake. If you get em all right and this post gets archived, it's bragging rights for years.

Thirdly, I can't wait for the Oscars this year.

There likely won't be many surprises in the acting categories, but with the Best Picture race this tight, it'll be interesting.

Plus I think Ellen is incredibly funny.

Iwo Jima could win because people will vote for it to make up for not voting for Clint for Best Director. And Departed, while a great movie, doesn't seem like an Oscar-worthy film so I could see people thinking a vote for Scorcese is more than enough.

helen mirren, forest whitaker, jennifer hudson and eddie murphy.

this is definitely scorcese's year for best director, and i think little miss sunshine will take best picture based on their upset at the SAG awards (actors make up the largest voting bloc of the academy) and based on the best picture award lately going to the fourth or fifth best film in the category.

And as of this moment, Wednesday evening, my choice for Best Picture is Little Miss Sunshine.

But that will most likely change between now and tomorrow morning.

The acting categories are a shaky lock (Forest, Helen, Jennifer, Eddie, Marty, Michael Arndt, William Monahan), but there are thoughts about others creeping in (Peter... nope, Helen... Abigail, Kelly Leak, Clint, del Toro, Patrick Marber)...

This is going to be exciting, no homo.

(I don't know why either, just go with it)

I don't think it was What's Eating Gilbert Grape or The Basketball Diaries, as he was still River Phoenix-lite at that time.

Then he turns down Primal Fear and Boogie Nights, turns into the teen idol person he's tried to live down ever since, and was going down a path that coulda been short-lived if not played right.

The Beach? Was that the first step towards today? He still looked real boyish, but I guess that might have been the first real sign of what he would really hit stride with in The Aviator and now this past year.

BTW, how old are we saying he was supposed to be in The Departed? He's 32 in real life, but he's supposed to be early 20's or so, right?

EDIT: And he turned down American Psycho too.

I guess you could call The Beach the turning point, but he didn't put up a great deal of amazing performances between that and The Aviator. He was decent in Gangs of New York (of course Daniel Day-Lewis made it pretty hard for anyone else to be great), but The Aviator put him over the top.

The Departed merely built upon that. He gave a performance for the ages, IMO.

Agree, The Aviator was a really kind of "let's reexamine his career" type of turn.

Saw it a second time, and was even more impressed by what he did.

I haven't seen Blood Diamond but that he could have topped or even come near that performance is crazy to me.

Yup. I realized it was a great performance the first time around. On the second viewing I really paid attention to his performance specifically and was blown away. I've seen it 3 times now and I think I will watch it again sometime this week.

We're in 100% agreement here. I haven't seen it either but I REALLY have a hard time believing it was better than The Departed. I'm not adverse to seeing it, but just because he had an accent doesn't make it a better performance.

In response to Reply # 89

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,254767,00.html

Eddie Murphy did not like losing the Academy Award for best supporting actor to Alan Arkin last night. He split the show — exit stage left! — as soon Arkin’s name was announced.

Murphy didn’t stay to see Jennifer Hudson win best supporting actress in "Dreamgirls" or his fellow castmates Hudson, Beyonce, Keith Robinson and Anoki Noni Rose perform the show’s nominated songs in a stellar staging by "Dreamgirls" director/writer Bill Condon, who wasn't an Oscar nominee.

That may have been the problem with "Dreamgirls" all along, as I’ve suggested before: Much as the movie depends on a song called “We Are A Family,” the cast could not be marketed that way. From the beginning, Murphy acted as a loner. He was the lone holdout at the Cannes Film Festival last year when 20 minutes of the movie was shown to distributors and press.

>4. Here's another secret: I'm told that there's a big change in the order that the awards will be presented. The Best Supporting Actor and Actress awards will NOT be presented in the up-front portion of the show, as in previous years. Instead, none of the acting awards will be given out until the last third of the telecast. The Academy is doing this, I understand, because Oscar viewership starts out strong and then wanes. Ziskin is hoping that this will keep the audience glued to the entire broadcast hour after hour. But I understand this decision was hotly disputed because it breaks with tradition. All I can say is that now there's not much reason to watch the beginning of the show, either. UPDATE: *This is the only one of my spoilers being disputed by someone I respect. Steve Pond, a contributor to the LA Times' Envelope blog and author of a book about Oscars history, The Big Show tells me: "They're spread out, not bunched in the last third: early, middle and late. Been that way on the rundowns all week." I sincerely hope he's right. But I can only report what my sources tell me, and so far they've been really accurate. They said the Supporting Actor/Actress category had been moved as of Thursday night. I say, move it back.*

The Departed - Nuff said really. Well acted, well directed, well written.

Children Of Men - I can't remember a time when I saw a film like this one. Powerful story and filmed brilliantly.

Pan's Labyrinth - Not my favorite of the year, but still a great film in all senses of the word.

Little Miss Sunshine - I would of put The Prestige here, but that would be argued by any circle, and this movie really was terrifically written and strangely brilliant.

Borat - The Academy has no balls at all. This movie was brilliant and shook up the entire movie industry. It was funny as hell, Cohen was unparalleled in his character, and remained a great film with its risky content.

The winner? The Departed.

Again, any of the five would have been fine.

Congrats to Longo and Premiere (I was "Aaron Sorkin")

To be fair, "myno" (whoever *that* is) didn't get a chance to make hi-- er, *their* picks before the official ABC game locked...

* Longo entered his picks here but also wasn't able to get his picks in to the official game... but it's cool...

Maybe next year we can set up a prize or some shit, like they do over in Sports with the football pool...

Anyway, good shit y'all, way to keep it (relatively) civil and troll-free, see y'all next time...

I had no idea in the sound editing category and I waffled on Best Director. I knew The Departed would win, but I thought they would fuck with marty and go with someone else.

Thumbs down to them moving people along. Less numbers and stuff we don't care about. We want to see the top people get to blather on and on. I fell asleep before forrest whitaker gave his speech.

I picked my favorites and not who I knew was going to win. I knew Gosling and Cruz weren't going to win, but I chose them anyways because I prefered their preformances over the others in the catagories. Oh, well. 11 ain't bad after all, even based on favorites.

BTW, maybe it's unfair because I work in a movie theatre, but I saw 117 films theatrically in 2006, my best year yet as a moviegoer.

This is actually one of my down years:

2004: 21 right
2005: 16 right
2006: 20 right
2007: 16 right

Still I'm pleased. I am pissed that I didn't go with my gut and put The Lives of Others, which had a lot of buzz swinging its way before the ceremony. Oh well.

Thanks for all the kudos, and next year, I'll post my picks earlier so that everyone can copy them for their office pool.

In response to Reply # 314

I might go so far to say Infernal Affairs was the better movie (but Departed was the better cast) but at the very least, I think everyone will say that its close between the two. Still, The Departed is Best Picture and Infernal Affairs can't even merit a best foreign language nomination?

Maybe it wasn't submitted as the China's representative (kind of a lame way to run it, each country only getting only one film).

Overall, it was a rough show. The factual mistakes, the choir bit, the people rolling around forming things was kind of cool but moreso goofy, and Chris Connelly didn't make for entertaining viewing. And the clips packages were a little too fast paced IMO (and why did it take Nancy Meyers and Michael Mann to throw those together)?

I liked the feel Ellen brought to the show. If she repeats as host, she'd have to bring a new schtick because I'm not sure the aw-shucks routine would work again.

The highlight of the night for me was Whitaker's acceptance speech and the Jack Black/Will Ferrell/John C. Reilly song.

one more thing...
in my opinion
Babel didnt get best picture because it tried to catch maybe the same essence of the movie Crash but it didnt really hit it....
but dont get me wrong it was an awesome movie..
I interpret it as maybe the tower of babel with use of different languages and how the people didnt understand each other...with problems that are happening now such as immigration, terrorism, and dysfunctional relationships....sort of like a "MODERN TOWER OF BABEL"...
yea i like that.

If the Departed was stemmed from a movie in Japan, how hard is it to write a screenplay from it..it's like having the blueprint mapped out for you? Is that how it went down I am not sure how that works.

Marty had never seen Infernal Affairs (the original) but the first hour or so of The Departed is very similar to Infernal Affairs. After that, though, the characters are MUCH better defined, theres more depth, and it's all around more enjoyable. But that's just my opinion.

having watched infernal affairs first, i was really impressed by the start of The Departed, it all seemed new, but the second half was scene for scene the same as Infernal Affairs - only not as good.

still given that it's a very plot driven story they're remaking, i guess it's testamount to the quality that i still liked it a lot

but personally, since it lost some of the refinement of Infernal Affairs, i'd hesitate to give it those awards

added a heavy helping of Boston flavor, and voila, Best Picture, 2006.

This wasn't a shot-for-shot remake.

there are alot of scene similarities, even really small things like Alec Baldwin's character and the corresponding character in Infernal Affairs hitting golfballs while promoting the mole to spy on everyone.

But the overall point remains the same... same plot points, different flavor.

Chong and Mak couldn't come to Boston and capture that flavor (the dialogue, the dialect, the customs of the area)... *that's* what distinguishes this film from the original.

with an extra hour of expansion. Now that I think of it, basically everything that was in Infernal Affairs is in The Departed somewhere. I'm not really exaggerating either.

http://defamer.com/hollywood/oscars/oscar-sound-mixer-smackdown-ii-team-apocalypto-responds-240492.php

"THR notes the odd post-victory smackdown directed at Lucciesque Apocalyto also-ran Kevin O'Connell by Dreamgirls winner Michael Minkler, who indicated that The Streak was stealing the spotlight from his team's achievement:

Could a little rivalry have been revealed in the sound mixing world? Things turned weird when the winners in that category -- Willie Burton, Bob Beemer and Michael Minkler for "Dreamgirls" -- were onstage in the press room. A question was thrown to the trio about what advice they had for Kevin O'Connell, a nominee for "Apocalypto" who now has been nominated 19 times without a win. While Burton and Beemer had conciliatory things to say -- "Hang in there, Kevin, you'll get your chance," Burton said -- Minkler's words were the opposite. "I think Kevin should go away with 19 nominations," he said without cracking a smile. "We work really hard, and if we stumble upon an award, we are so grateful. I have to wonder ... Kevin is an OK mixer, but he should take up another line of work." He exited the stage leaving people wondering whether he was serious."

And to top off losing yet again and extending his record to 0 - 19 (and isn't exactly out there drumming up support for him or campaigning for a prize), O'Connell had to leave the ceremony early to go to the hospital to be with his sick mother, who then passed away.

The video is on Oscar.com (sound mixing press room). It's the last question asked.

To get back at everyone talking about her daughter.

Damn near everything that's happened to it since January has either been "bad" or "good with a big asterisk", like this.

The only element/person associated with "Dreamgirls" to survive unscathed was Jennifer Hudson, probably because she rolls pretty hard with Jesus and the black magic can't touch her.

Getting back on topic, I ain't even know sound mixers had beefs like that. But that was pretty low, talking about duke when his mama was on her deathbed.
