the office is sooooo british sometimes it's painful, yet it's one of my favorite series ever. its just a different kind of humor. that subtle, awkward, dry, sarcastic shit that only the brits can pull off. plus, the emotional attachment that if you watch the whole series + the christmas episodes, really gets to you. sorry if its not as slapstick and laugh out loud funny as the us version, but its still great. i think both the uk and us versions just fit their market really well.

peace

tbh - british humour is an acquired taste.

the humour is in the irony, this is something i find that american guys dont OFTEN get, im not saying you dont get it at all.

not everyone in britain found the office funny...

re: 'monty python / obvious humour'... that was 30 years ago, and it was avante garde at the time. british humour has advanced a lot since then, and the office is evidence of that.

sarcastic humour isnt so big here anymore, neither is catchphrase or obvious humour.

irony is huge here... especially when its at others expense. for example... what us british find funny about borat is probably different to what americans have found funny about it.

some... kinda?

This from the ppl that brought us Monty Python.

I keep hearing the same b.s from either side of either ocean. The Asians (mostly Japanese) say American humor is too much like an inside joke, and the Europeans tend to say something along the line of what you just posted.

Shaun of the Dead was never very funny to me...
I've seen it twice, and I'm so bored that I zone out toward the end both times.

But I think the BBC Office is hilarious... so, I don't know...

That kind of dry humor really fits in that office setting...and most of those lines are so damn quippy. To the point that if you don't pick up the slang you'll be lost on most of the jokes...

Also, there's no laugh track, so maybe you just don't know when you missed the joke...

I find myself thinking when I watch an episode of the BBC version - especially after recently seeing the NC version - how different the shows... in pacing, in type of humor... it's just noticeably different... Americans don't interact like that socially... the nations' characters are very different in regards to what we find funny.

That you may or may not have access too...

My point was that you might miss jokes of that nature completely...

Like, shit... do you know what British people think is funny? How much of that translates to your average American mind?

and, for the record, I never said the show needed a laugh track...

I said, it doesn't have one, and if a joke of the above nature were to appear, you might miss it completely... not because it's not funny, just because you didn't even know that shit was a joke...

get it?

But I was just saying if a show actually needed a laugh track that would be pretty pathetic. I didn't even think about the cultural differences though so you're right in this case a laugh track might be effective.

that doesnt mean that the British version isn't funny at all, there are some of us in this country who aren't predisposed to British comedy.

Im sure there are tons of people in England who don't think the American version is funny at all.

I watched the American version first, before I ever saw the BBC Office, and I'm honestly not sure at this point which one I would say is "better". I'm fans of both, though. It took me some time to get into the British show at first, because the whole tone is so different from the NBC series, and some of the jokes were even recycled as part of the early American episodes, so they didn't work for me. I thought the British show improved a lot in its second season. Gervais' boss becomes much more pathetic (and thus compelling) after they introduce his rivalry with Neil. Also, the writing seems tighter in those later episodes, as they come up with new ways to play with the characters. While the American Office is usually willing to undercut an awkward or uncomfortable moment with a punchline or by cutting to another joke, the British show is more about letting those painful embarassing scenes linger, and I think that's really why people love it as much as they do. It isn't a conventional comedy, but there is some hilarious material in it, and I'd say its worth checking out more than a couple episodes before passing judgment. But then it isn't everybody's cup of tea, either.

peace,
murph

they weren't as high on the funny as the later episodes were. like when i was watching the first ep, i was sitting there like 'ok, but when am i supposed to laugh?', but by episode three, i was cracking the fuck up.

and yes, i laughed my ass off at a lot of it.

In response to Reply # 0

And doesn't quite understand that just because something isn't exactly "LOL" doesn't mean it's not "funny."

So when he asks us BBC fans if we "laughed," and our answer is anything short of "yes, YES, Jesus, I LOLd all night long," then we're somehow proving his point that the show is "NOT FUNNY AT ALL." Chuckles, (relatable) groans, and slow burns don't count. To him, those aren't "funny."

Yes, Ricky Gervais' version of the show does have some LOL moments, as Frank Longo has pointed out, but the show's really not about "LOL, that was sooooooo funny" moments. And no, that doesn't mean it's about "drama," either.

And can we please drop the "it's cool to hate American shit, so I can see why you snobbby guys don't like the American version" plea copping? Can it be that some cats simply understand and appreciate other types of humor beside the "I LOL'd, so I'm entertained" style?

In response to Reply # 69

As most of you know, I'm not a huge Arrested Development fan. I can certainly praise it for being clever, but that show doesn't make me laugh out loud as often as I'd like (*ducks tomatoes*) so I understand the point you're trying to make, honestly (and even if you disagree with my AD point, let's not make this another AD post, I think you at least understand the point I'm trying to make).

However, the BBC's Office was often clever AND funny, just like the NBC one is. I've certainly laughed out loud many times at the BBC one.

I think the difference is I find the NBC one to be more quotable. Perhaps it's because I'm American, or perhaps it's because quotables are what Steve Carrell does best, but I find it to be more quotable than Gervais's. Maybe that's why you like it more.

But Gervais's Office is quotable as well. And also very clever. And also very funny. That's why it has such a loyal and expansive fanbase, because that balancing act is a very delicate one.

My time is valuable to me. Sorry, but I don't want to waste it watching shows I don't enjoy. I'm glad Seinfeld was given the chance to develop, because it ended up being a great show --- though I always HATED Kramer's character - he added nothing to the show but annoyance for me.

>maybe if bbc office would have a guy

Does the US Office load its show with guys getting kicked in the sack? I never said that's what's funny to me. Generally I don't like physical humor. And I never said the UK version was a sappy drama.

It just wasn't that good to me. Now granted, I am willing to watch maybe one of two episodes since so many people think it's great. But I don't want to pay for it, so I'm hoping I can watch it on my friend's Tivo.

The US version is just better, IMO.

except to say, once again, that I find it amusing when cats play the "my time is valuable" card to justify why they simply can't bother to watch episodes of shows (and I know, "it's his choice to do so," save the cards and letters), as if they can't possibly bother to eke out 40 more minutes of their day to see Just. What. Is. So. Great. about some show. My theory is that the person's mind was pretty much made up by the time the cold opening of the show was over, probably 2 or 3 minutes in. Hell, it was probably made up before they sat down to watch. But I digress.

All I know is if I had seen just one episode of a show like Curb Your Enthusiasm, Extras (another UK "comedy" by Ricky Gervais) or The Wire (I know, it's a drama), I would have been kicking myself for declaring them wack.

And even the US Office pilot wasn't that great. Meaning "funny." So let's not act like the US version somehow "got it" in 30 minutes while the UK version didn't.

But I can usually tell if I'm going to like a show pretty quick. In fact, I'm usually pretty forgiving.

Often, I see the first episode of something and say, "This has potential, let's keep watching." It's less common for me to say, "This blows, I'm never watching again."
(well, I did do that with all the "fat, middle-aged white men with hot wives" shows that are so common now)

I didn't see the first episode of the UK Office. I don't know what episode it was, it just happened to be on my friend's house so I checked it out.

I wanted to like the show. Like I said, the US version is one of my favorites. But I just found the UK version to be not as good.

I actually thought, I'd rather watch a rerun of the US version anyday...

I'm trying to remember a show I didn't like at first glance, but ended up loving... and I'm coming up pretty blank.

Seinfeld is the only one I've got. And that's possibly because I was 14 when it debuted in 1990, and it took me a few years to get into it. Not because I watched it and thought it was bad, but I watched it and thought, "meh, whatever - not really a show for me."
I mean, did other 14 year olds not living in NYC relate to that show when it first came out?

>And even the US Office pilot wasn't that great. Meaning

>it" in 30 minutes while the UK version didn't.

I loved the US version from the first episode. Shit, I loved it from the first snippets of scenes that I saw online.

Ridiculous! The first episode of the Office NBC is verbatim the BBC first episode.

Watch the episode where David gets his guitar at the work retreat or when he gets a speaking gig. If you don't like them, then you're entitled to your opinion.

In addition to having 3 sharper characters (David, Tim and Gareth (who is leagues funnier than the weirdo dude who is his American equivalent), the BBC show has reserves of emotion that Office NBC just doesn't have.

could have told you that

but there's no *need* to defend the show

people the world over have enjoyed it &

you don't like it, that's fine

because you don't get it, doesn't make it a bad show

that it was successful the world over- and MUCH more so than the NBC version- proves otherwise

I've said it time and time again, and been attacked over and over for it, but yes, The Brit version is horribly unfunny
What's even worse is the elitist attitude that those who actually enjoy the british version come at you with when you explain why their favorite version is actually just a glorified steamy pile compared to the american version

BBC version of the "Office" is sidesplitting.

Two words = Gareth Keenan.

US version is slightly less funny.

Shaun of the Dead is Hilarious.

I didn't laugh once.

While the original poster's assessment is just ridiculous and doesn't even warrant response...((yes...this is an elitist reply...if you think that the BBC Office is completely unfunny {{see: mcdeezjawns/nuts/berries & mcsp1200isbroke}} then I have no compunction in saying that I am not only smarter than you, but you're probably too dumb to realize it...you call it "elitist", I call it "shut the fuck up with your horrible opinion"))...I have a problem with all these people "defending" the BBC version using cliched and incorrect arguments. It is absurdly base and cliche to say that people can't like the Wernham/Hogg Office because it is "British" humor and that, by definition, it is too "dry".

My 5 point platform...

First off, someone define "dry humor". The fuck is that?? It is the most bandied about but undefined term ever. Almost as much as the terms "British/American Humor". Whats "British Humor"? Is it the almost genre bending psychoses of Monty Python; the gross-out oddball character stuff of The League of Gentlemen; is it the unfathomably lowbrow "appeals-to-the-semi-retarded" Benny Hill; is it Peter Sellers (who may indeed BE the definition of "dry"); is it Vic & Bob (and one extra one); is it Morecomb & Wise (with no deadwood); or the established genius of Everett Milligan Cleese. Sessions.

Secondly, The Office BBC (TOBBC) was influenced by American humorists and American comedians more than any Brit stuff. Rocky Gervais' favorite comics are all Americans. Yes, TOBBC was set in and made in Britain for a wildly responsive British audience so technically it is "British Humor" but the laughter isn't derived from the ever present sarcastic response that is the rock solid foundation of popular British humor. Its mostly all derived from the CYE & Larry Sanders type of "uncomfortable laughter" humor. TOBBC points at David Brent and laughs. Not at wacky situations he gets in, not in his sarcastic attitude, and definitely not in a sly and sublime manner. Much like you're supposed to squirm and laugh nervously at Hank Kingsley or Larry David, you're supposed to watch in horror as David Brent offends and ostracizes as he unwitrtingly amuses noone but himself. And me. And the rest of the intelligent population watching. If TOBBC can only be surmised as "British Humor" then I guess that means CYE & TLSS are just fish and chips off the old bloke.

Thirdinksy...TOBBC IS BETTER THAN TONBC. I want to just let that sink in. Breathe. Count 10. I'm not saying "funnier" and I don't mean "makes you laugh harder and more often". I mean its "better" than TONBC. TOBBC is A/K/A..."Superior"..."Greater Than"..."Weller Done"..."Cold Gettin Busier Than"..."Enhanced"..."Worse (Antonym)" than TONBC. It has an sweetly sad quality to it that TONBC doesn't even try to touch. Thats no knock on TONBC but TOBBC did both comedy and drama so well it just is flat out better. You can't argue it. Its science.

4th. In honor of the 4th ep of the 1st series of TOBBC. I have already stated (elsewhere) that this is the start-to-finish 30 funniest minutes of television ever. Its got: Keith's career goals, Monkey Allen down in the warehouse, Foregone Conclusion, gay farmers with no farm, false complaints, and Gareth...just watching.

Fish pussy. All of you who think that us fans of TOBBC only like it to be different and contrarian and elitist originals...do you really think that? That we, the large and vocal majority, only "say" we like it because we just have to hate on the American show and argue with its fans? Do you really? That just smacks of such low self esteem and such high delusions of grandeur. Automatically negating other's opinions because you feel those opinions only exist to counter your own. Yo thats like psychotic in a way.

Sorry, but anyone who thinks they can make the claim that they are smarter than someone else based on their preference for a fucking TV show is clearly the most ignorant of the whole bunch, especially given your woeful posting style - I won't insult your grammar and sentence structure since this is the internet and people are lazy, but it doesn't exactly yell out, "Brilliant guy here!"

Yes, you are an elitist prick, you got that part right.

Most of the rest of your post is just convoluted babbling that no one gives a shit about. I suspect you just like to hear yourself type. But I have a few more responses.

This is all opinion, and it is also all wrong. lol
Of course, I am operating on only one episode of the BBC version, but that episode was inferior IMO to every single episode of the US Office.
At least you admit that the BBC version is not funnier than the US. Or rather, you don't claim that it is funnier.

>It has an sweetly sad quality to it that TONBC doesn't

I thought you said you were smart? Of course we can argue it. And it's nothing even remotely similar to science. Yeah, I'm just being argumentative now.
Anyway, I think the US version is not only far funnier, but also far more compelling in its relationships (Pam and Jim > whoever they were). Although the episode I saw did not really have much drama in it at all, so maybe that wasn't a good gauge.

No, I think you probably like a show that appeals to you, and nothing's wrong with that. I don't have this disdain for UK Office fans that you seem to have for fans of the US version. I'm bigger than that. You like it, you watch it. It doesn't matter to me if you're missing out on a better show in the US version.

>That we, the large and
>vocal majority,

On OKP maybe. Not in the real world. I know 2 people in real life who like the BBC version. Almost everyone I know who's around my age (29) watches the US version and loves it. Vocal majority? Only on OKP.

only "say" we like it because we just have to

No, I don't really think that. I just think you're missing out on a better show.

Sounds familiar. I typically don't insult people whose opinions differ from mine, but that seems to be your style.
For instance, "anyone who likes the US version more than the UK is less intelligent than me" - that's arrogant, ridiculous, and a whole host of other things that I don't feel like typing because my dinner is ready.

Regardless of which show is better, you are a huge asshole.

To be absolutely 100% honest...it was a joke. I don't REALLY think that I'm better, or smarter, or more hung (even though I probably am) than anyone else because of a TV show. I actually thought that was ludicrous enough to be transparently jokey. But since thats the part of my rambling incoherence that apparently made enough sense for you to respond to, I will concede the argument and agree that if someone were to actually act that way then they would indeed be ignorant. But we had better get from way out here on this limb because its not gonna support the both of us. (And my dick thats bigger than yours).

but it doesn't exactly yell out,
>"Brilliant guy here!"

Yes it does. It sounds that barbaric YAWLP from the mountainside to the hills and valleys below. You can't argue that. It's science. Echo science.

>Yes, you are an elitist prick, you got that part right.

Again, joke. But if you wanna know why I chose to joke that way it was because of comments like this from your mcdeezdoppleganger (okay wait...is that you? forgive my unintelligible ramblings but the names are oh-so similar):

"What's even worse is the elitist attitude that those who actually enjoy the british version come at you with when you explain why their favorite version is actually just a glorified steamy pile compared to the american version"

I mean, I KNOW I don't make sense sometimes...but that comment there...I can't decide if its more ironical than hypocritical. But the best part is a reply later when he said:

"What I said supports my opinion, and does nothing to Display an "elitist attitude" at all..."

Remember, what he "said" was:

"What's even worse is the elitist attitude that those who actually enjoy the british version come at you with when you explain why their favorite version is actually just a glorified steamy pile compared to the american version"

Dude flat out gave his opinion, and then said that his opinion supports his opinion. Wow. Also, he's absolutely correct...there isnt' even a whiffle of "elitism" is saying that you "explain" to someone why their "favorite version is actually just a glorified steamy pile" when compared to something he likes. That's quite humble actually. Almost deferential. He/You(?) is most definitely un-elitist.

"Sorry kiddo"

ESPECIALLY when trying to correct people while calling them kiddo!!

" ...There is nothing elitist in saying that the british version isnt funny... However, there is an elitist attitude in all of you who claim that the people who think it is unfunny "dont get it"....We get it...and we think it is boring compared to the American version"

All I have to say about this part is that all of us who like TOBBC HATE generalizations. Every single one of us.

>
>Most of the rest of your post is just convoluted babbling that
>no one gives a shit about. I suspect you just like to hear
>yourself type. But I have a few more responses.

Now you're just being mean. And it hurts. And I don't like hearing myself type. I mean...I don't NOT like it. I'm pretty much indifferent about the whole thing. Its just typing. Why would you think I like that one way or the other? You know what sound I do like? A child's laughter. And farts.

>This is all opinion, and it is also all wrong. lol

Well see, shit...I didn't know you were un-elitistly condescending your generalizations to all of us from such an enlightened position. Hellfire! You say you saw a whole one of TOBBC??!? Damn it all then, I can't hope to change your mind! You've done your homework! I bet you have a bumper sticker that says "Minds are like parachutes: they only function when opened". Because you totally seem like someone who would have a bumper sticker!
>
>I thought you said you were smart? Of course we can argue it.
>And it's nothing even remotely similar to science.

There you go again, taking the hardest possible angle to argue and just nailing the point home! You, once again, are correct...its not science at all! I made that part up!! Fuckin shit, I thought I'd get one by you!! Now I KNOW you have a bumper sticker!

>
>Never saw it. Maybe this would have been the one to catch.

No...you've done quite enough. What more could people ask of you? You've watched a whole episode, you don't have the 30 minutes to go wasting on a show you've already spent 30 minutes on before deciding its horrible, the US version is far superior, and that you'll argue the point whenever you can! Fuck man....I mean 30 whole menudos!

>No, I think you probably like a show that appeals to you, and
>nothing's wrong with that. I don't have this disdain for UK
>Office fans that you seem to have for fans of the US version.
>I'm bigger than that. You like it, you watch it. It doesn't

I was going to quizzically ask you why you thought I had a disdain for fans of the US show, because I don't. But then i remember that you're still firmly planted on the righteous side of refusing to bow down to obviously ridiculous arguments. I don't hate people who like TONBC better than TOBBC. I don't think I'm smarter than anyone who likes TONBC better than TOBBC. I know I previously said I do but I was lying. Now I'm telling the truth.

Oh!! and I also have come to a conclusion and decided you and mcdeezjawns are NOT the same person. But you'll probably criticize my writing style and call me fatty or something. Dick.

>On OKP maybe. Not in the real world. I know 2 people in real
>life who like the BBC version. Almost everyone I know who's
>around my age (29) watches the US version and loves it. Vocal

Shenanigans!! I call Shenanigans. Happy as I am for you and your friends aged 27-31 that you have all found a TV to watch and love I must take umbrage with your qualifier of "only on OKP". Until you and I, and your cabal of almost-middle-aged-TONBC-watchin-and-lovin pals, all sit down in real life and talk this out then "only on OKP is what we're all going to have to settle for. And "only on OKP" its just you and like 4 others who argue TOBBC << TONBC. Hey wait a second though...unless you know like 20 million people around your age (29), then how does your little "Carrell Clique" constitute a majority. That's fuzzy math. Downright peach-faced.

>No, I don't really think that. I just think you're missing out
>on a better show.

Okay, maybe you don't really think that but someone somewhere above, or in one of the other baker's dozen posts on this debate, said that the only reason people like it is because its cool to be anti-American or some other jingoistic horseshit. Maybe it was mcdeezLeeGreenwood'snutsacks or someone. Thanks for your concern about me missing out on your fave show. Maybe you and all your friends hovering around the big 3-Oh can get me a card. And then apologize for calling me arrogant prick.

>Sounds familiar. I typically don't insult people whose
>opinions differ from mine, but that seems to be your style.
>For instance, "anyone who likes the US version more than the
>UK is less intelligent than me" - that's arrogant, ridiculous,
>and a whole host of other things that I don't feel like typing
>because my dinner is ready.

I don't really know what I was going for with that last one...I think I was just trying to get to 5.

Here's an assumption...I dunno if this is accurate or not, its just a shot in the dark here...but I think it REALLY stuck in your craw that I said I had no problems with thinking people stupid if they liked TONBC >> TOBBC, you brought it up enough. Just a guess. Maybe a guesstimate? I'm just thinking that it really bothered you. Had you not brought it up 4 times maybe I'd think differently. Maybe. Do I need to tell you again that "dems just jokes". I don't really mean it. Okay? I promise. And was it really so incoherent that you totally missed how I mostly attacked people defending TOBBC? Was it really so incoherent that you could only respond to one part over and over?

You can go ahead and scratch ONE person around your age (29) off your friends list pal!!

>Regardless of which show is better, you are a huge asshole.

Stop. It hurts. Seriously.

I guess that's the problem with message boards. You can't tell if someone is joking or if they really are a gigantic asshole. Your second post seems to constantly concede that you were only joking, and didn't mean much of anything you said. Which is fine. I have no problem with joking. But there are people who really do think like that, and I had no way of knowing which kind you were.

So, thus the antagonistic posts back and forth.

>I don't even know what I'm talking about 1/3 of the time.

Clearly. haha just joking.

>To be absolutely 100% honest...it was a joke. I don't REALLY
>think that I'm better, or smarter, or more hung (even though I

>thought that was ludicrous enough to be transparently jokey.

Normally it would be, but on the internets... you never know.

>But since thats the part of my rambling incoherence that
>apparently made enough sense for you to respond to,

Well, I wasn't going to respond to all that stuff about defenders of the UK version, because it obviously didn't apply to me.

I noticed that too. I think that may have been the funniest comment in this entire thread. I just wasn't sure if he was being cheeky, or if he really didn't realize how hypocritical that was.

Yep, pretty funny. Again though, it's possible he was being intentionally ironic.

I actually agree with pretty much all you just said. But then again, mcdeezjawns is a different person and I thought his post was a bit much myself. It was pretty funny though.

Well, this was the part of "defenders of the UK version" and I had no interest in it. I actually do like the sound of typing - not specifically my own, but pretty much any relatively fast typing. And I also like the sound of laughter - not exclusively children's laughter, but all kinds, except the snorting or cackling varieties. And farts are often funny, but depending on whose they are and how they smell, the humor in the sound is outweighed by the unpleasantness.

I didn't know I was being condescending. I stated it was my opinion vs other people's. Of course I hold my OWN opinion in higher regard than anyone else's, because it's my own opinion! I would hope everyone does the same, because if you ever value someone else's opinion more than your own, you're in trouble.

>Hellfire! You say you saw a whole one of
>TOBBC??!? Damn it all then, I can't hope to change your mind!

I saw one and wasn't motivated for a second. If my friend with Tivo offered me another and I had nothing better to do, I'd probably watch. Maybe I'll try to see magical episode # 4.

The fact that one is a UK show and one is a US show is obviously a factor. Which show do Brits prefer? I'd probably go ahead and say the UK version. Which show do Americans prefer? I'm thinking the US version. Hey, guess what? I'm American and I prefer the US version.

I think this could be supported by TV ratings, but that's not really fair given that the UK version is only available on cable TV and the US version is broadcast. So it wins in # of viewers by default.

My general point was, the US version certainly seems more popular to me in the real world. I think it appeals to Americans more than the UK version. Perhaps instead of "only on OKP" I should have said, "only on OKP and in the UK."

That was definitely the thing that made me think you were an arrogant prick. It didn't really bother me, it just made me want to respond, because as you've admitted, it was a ridiculous statement.

Do I need to tell you again that
>"dems just jokes". I don't really mean it. Okay? I promise.

I like jokes, it just helps if they're funny.

>And was it really so incoherent that you totally missed how I

While I believe that NBC's the Office improved this season, the BBC version was just better. I can see the NBC version dragging on for a few more seasons where as the Office BBC went out on top.

I will say that NBC's The Office is getting better...

It's growing into something beyond the British version, because whereas the BBC show depends heavily on 3 or 4 main characters, the american version is damn near ensemble in nature. By that, I mean that almost every character is good for laughs.... they all get more lines, they've all been developed more than they were on BBC...

Because of that, it's bound to appeal to more people. You're more likely to relate to one or more characters, hence more likely to relate to and get the jokes...

Altho I did find the BBC version to be hilarious, in the end I think the American version is funnier, and at the end of the day... it's just better...

Of course, this is completely relative...

As is the opinion this entire thread is predicated on.

and said "don't give up until you've watched at least 4 episodes". i didn't really get it until somewhere in the middle of the third one. it's just a completely different kind of humor.

it's very similar to curb your enthusiasm to me, where you're not laughing because it's funny-funny, but the situations just get so uncomfortable that you start this nervous laugh. then when they do hit you with a more straightforward joke, it just makes you laugh that much harder. it builds up, at least for me.

didn't someone say comedy = pain + truth? these shows really play up the pain.

i mean i am in hysterics most of the time when i watch it. the style of humour really appeals to me. dry, tongue in cheeck british humour, when done properly is brilliant and this is what the bbc version does.

most people can't really seem to pin point what they love about the bbc version. i can though.

- ricky gervais as brent. it might just be me, but i laugh just looking at that character. he plays it unbelievably well. his character becomes even better when he's in awkward situations (which he seems to continually put himself in or surround himself with) and especially when he has a point to prove. i've just rewatched the whole series over the last couple of weeks and i just walk around laughing sometimes at the thought of some of the shit he does. the dance in series two. his songs in series one (ep. 4). he's just brilliant.

- the development of gareth's character. i think they said in one of the documentaries that they realised they could get the character to say dumber, crazier shit and it would work because of the way mackenzie played him and his obvious physicality etc. he's like brent in the way that he believes wholeheartedly that he's right and 'a man of the world' and 'cosmopolitan'. its lunacy.

- tim. his one liners, interraction with gareth and looks to the camera are yeah, hilarious. but as some have kinda touched on, the emotional baggage they build up with tim and dawn and is finally drawn to a head in the christmas specials is brilliant.

- dawn. lucy davis is HOT. hehe

i mean, if you don't find it funny, fair enough. some people i know who've seen it don't find it funny. they think its clever and scary at the accuracy of some of the things they do in the show. i think you've gotta have the right sorta take on the humour to find it funny. saying that, this is not your conventional sitcom with the canned laughter and obvious jokes. some of the things they do and say have been built up for the laugh, but alot of the times they don't go for the obvious joke. its far too awkward a show to do that.

i do think that anyone who doesn't love this show is missing out though.

David Brent is the most compelling and intriguing character to come down the pike since Tony Soprano.

And it takes more than one episode viewing to fully understand that.

i mean at face value he's fairly one dimensional. but he really isn't. you're right, after a few episodes you start to realise there's more to him than meets the eye.

and yeah, he's funny. unlike most one dimensional sitcom characters who are 'quirky' for the sake of being quirky.

i honestly think the show as a whole is a stroke of genius.

the office is one of the funniest programmes to ever come out of the uk - not difficult some might say but there has been some great stuff, you just have to avoid lots of rubbish to find it

but its not really indicative of british humour, there have been a couple of office-alikes since then because of its success but at the time there had been nothing else like it on uk screens.

it started out on bbc2 (fairly minority channel) in the middle of summer, 10pm at night with very little hype or fanfare and ended its run with only the cool kids having picked up on it

i seem to recall it was the release of the dvd that really started all the hype

only the first 6 episodes of the american office have been shown over here (bbc2 around midnight) and have passed by pretty much without comment

its ok (i am up to date with season 2) but really its a different show now and there isnt too much to compare anymore

the original is just better though, i cant really fathom the arguement where that wouldnt be the case

it will be interesting to see how the episode that gervais and merchant are writing for nbc goes down on both sides of the water

The US version is more laugh out loud and consistantly funny. The BBC version was more subtle but I was much more attached to those characters, and to cap it all off with the special was brilliant.

Just no. It really must be a cultural difference. But I mean seriously I've seen every episode of both series (granted I watched all the BBC ones first), but they're not even comparable. Steve Carrell is the only good character in the NBC show. And talking about LOL, I laugh waaaay more watching the BBC show, its more subtle, more clever. Man I wish I wasn't writing this and upping this retarded thread.

I didnt think nuthin of it at first but did get into it after a while.

A lot of the UK heads I know that watched it liked it cos it did in a weird kinda way typify their working environment.

But I do have to say that Ricky Gervais aint done nuthin else that interested me after that. The man is a one trick pony

HILARIOUS.

and this is from a die-hard NBC Office fan who still re-watches saved episodes every couple of days

I do think the supporting cast in the NBC version is better developed (I've only seen Season 1 of the BBC though) and I like Jim + Pam better than Tim + Dawn

but Ricky Gervais is fucking brilliant - I was crying at the part with the guitar

all that said (and I know this is a dead horse), I still can't see how fans of the American version don't like the UK version...and vice-versa.

Michael Scott and David Brent are both incredibly funny and the comedic timing is nearly exactly the same (Kevin is great but Keith sucks...WTF?)

most of the same plotlines too

I love both.

Yes but the main cast is better developed in the BBC show, particularly in season 2 and the special.

I like the US version. I'll even say that it's probably the best thing on TV right now (with the possible exception of Extras, or Letterman on a very good night). But recently in particular, it's become much more like a conventional sitcom. They don't have the same dedication to realism that the original show had. Gareth Keenan wouldn't have given that Mussolini speech that was on last night.

The American show is like the last season of Seinfeld, or like the fifth season of Curb. Flirting with the kind of absurdism that might make for easier belly laughs, but in the end is less fulfilling. To some extent this might be forced by the medium, where on NBC the tone keeps getting broken up by commercials.

>Michael Scott and David Brent are both incredibly funny and

They're starting to become different characters. Kevin's good for that dirty old man element. Big Fat Keith was more deadpan.

"..... not ... your minge."

155. "Did you watch the first two episodes or two random episodes?"
In response to Reply # 0

Cause watching two random ones isn't half as great as watching it sequentially. As to the do I laugh question.... honestly it depends. Sometimes when I watch it I absolutely bust a gut, other times I do see it as a drama and it does get me choked up, then other times it is just something I put on to make me smile and I wont laugh out loud just enjoy it.

Honestly, I think you should sit down and watch the whole thing. The way it builds up through two seasons and then those Christmas specials.... oh my lord. That is a joy that I have yet to see paralleled in my long TV watching history.

And here is the other thing: I think you should give it a try, not because I think you "didnt get it" but because the pacing and style of the British and American versions are pretty different. Knowing that you are a fan of the American version (you are a fan, right? or did I just make that up?) it could be you went in expecting the American version and getting something different. It is kind of like how you may have to listen to an album a few times to appreciate it because it is so different than an artist's previous work. So maybe clearing your head and giving it another shot might be helpful. It might not be, but because of all of the pleasure I have received from this series, I must request that you try again.

The timing of the airing of the episodes has exactly jack shit to do with anything High Voltage was talking about.

If you say that it's a variation of British humor, and "there's a difference," that's fine, that's what you should have said in the first place, smart guy.

And I want you to specify where exactly HighVoltage said "it's low-key humor, so that means it's equal to British humor." Because that's exactly what your're contending. Go ahead and point that sentence out to me. All he said was that it was British humor.

what the honest fuck are you talking about

it is YOU who are contending that british humour=low key (see: 'which is probably why he said 'it's british humour')

i merely stopped by to say the office cannot be traditional BRITISH HUMOUR™, although it has other british characteristics (separate from humour) which may have influenced him to make that remark

then you come steaming in with bizzare statements like this:
"The timing of the airing of the episodes has exactly jack shit to do with anything High Voltage was talking about."
1. he only wrote about one dozen words
2. 'the timing of the airing of the episodes' wtf? was i talking about watershed programming or something?

i mean, dude, i'm at a loss, you're accusing ME of not making sense?

When you say "it was new/original when it first showed," I took it to mean that this program was groundbreaking and not in the tradition of British comedy. Which I disagreed with, but apparently my disagreement was written in Sanskrit, since you don't seem to understand.

Do you really want to go over all of this again? Sweet JESUS.

Fuck it, you keep going with the old-school British humor* and namecalling. I'm done with it.

*see, when I refer to old-school British humor, it's a play on the apparent distinction that has been drawn between old style of British humor and the new style of British humor that was first exposed to the world when The Office aired for the first time, because it was new/original back then.

but that sentence is very odd
possibly it's just that idiotic PTP style that's going about
'shit to do with anything High Voltage was talking about'
- as if High Voltage had delivered a lecture. He made a single statement. Needless pluralization
'the timing of the airing of the episodes'
- what a twisted way to say... what the hell are you trying to say? if The Office had been made 50 years ago, then perhaps everything that had come after it would have consolidated its status as quintessential british humour

not to mention you appear to be dealing only with High Voltage's statement without adding one of your own

you are a strange fellow

It took a while for the uk to appreciate the subtleties of this sitcom too.

I feel it is comedy genius. and I laugh out loud. Particularly at his attempts at not appearing racist. Plus the stapler in jelly is just an example of how this show fires out gem after gem. Some you don't pick up immediately.
