"Dear PTP: Why don't you watch more Danish films?"

I mean, ya know, directed by someone other than Lars Von Trier?

Are janey and I the only two around here who know the greatness that is Mads Mikkelsen?

Has anyone else (besides janey and maybe Yogaflame)seen:

Brothers
Wilbur Wants to Kill Himself
Reconstruction
The Green Butchers
Adam's Apples
1:1
The Pusher Trilogy (I'm posting a review tonight, promise)

Those first 4 are available on Netflix. Get 'em in your queues now... or janey and I are gonna hunt you down and kick your asses.

Love,

kurly

DO IT

although I admit I can't watch Muriel's Wedding again. I saw it when it was in theatres, and I loved it, but there were a couple of moments in it that hurt my heart, and I can't sign up for that again.

It's like it's hysterically funny in places and just heartbreakingly sad in others. Which is brilliant, don't get me wrong.

In response to Reply # 0

directed by the woman who directed and co-wrote Wilbur. She co-wrote Wilbur with Anders Thomas Jensen, or whatever the fuck his name is, who wrote & directed Green Butchers & Adam's Apples. So to get that progression you really need to include Italian for Beginners.

I think this was the first Danish film that I ever saw that I liked, all previous Danish films being Bergman (ugh).

It wasn't stupid and it wasn't merely funny but also heartfelt, and it really took me by surprise.

No Mads Mikkelsen, though. That's its only real failing.

We went to see Green Butchers together at my insistence, because I had seen it at the film festival earlier that year, and afterwards he asked me, "did you think that was *funny*?"

So okay. I'm just warning you.

He's a hard one to predict, though. He loved Goodbye Dragon Inn, which I wouldn't think was just anyone's cup of tea.

Italian for Beginners is the first of the progression, as I mention above, and it made me want more. But Mads isn't in it.

But Green Butchers is really fuckin funny, but you have to have a completely perverted sense of humor to think so, but Mads has a starring role.

But Wilbur is just so great, and Sally Henderson is great in it, and Mads has a small but very cool role.

I CAN'T DECIDE

That way, you got yer drama and your(dark)comedy.

Brothers was one of my top 3 films of last year. It stars Connie Nielsen, who's been in some American films and Nicolaj Lie Kaas, who's also in Green Butchers.

which features Mads's brother Lars in a creepy role.

I was trying to remember why, even though I loved Brothers, I don't love it as much as you do, and I realized it's because I saw it in the same week as King's Game, and King's Game blew me away.

It has a great conflict at its center, and it's really well done.

When you're ready for a POLITICAL THRILLER, think King's Game. Who cares about Danish politics? YOU DO, you just don't know it yet.

When you're convinced that Danish film is like head-scratchingly great, like who knew it was so great, then turn to the rest of the list.

But if you ever EVER dare to post a word critical of Mads Mikkelsen, be prepared to DIE in my HANDS, lol.

It hasn't been released on DVD here and a release date hasn't even been announced. Even eBay doesn't have it. I can get it from Amazon UK for roughly $30. Do you think I'll like it enough to pay that much for it blind?

But when you do get a DVD player, it'll have to be region-free.

Actually, I could probably sell it quite easily on eBay, so I wouldn't hold you to buying it unless you really wanted it. :-)

Fucking Εmεl/Show me love and Together. Outside of that, I think the Holm/herngren Woody Allen-rip-off movies are decent (don't know their english language names), Same with Fares Jalla, Jalla which was basically low-brow humour but pretty entertaining. Rolf Andersons "Songs from the secon d floor" got great reviews but I thought it was pretentious and boring, cool concept though. Outside of that, I don't like anything else at all, maybe I'm forgetting something...

Cool experimental movie but it's hard to recommend that one, really weird and downright annoying at times, I just found it hilarious...

EDIT: Slim Susie/Smala Sussie was good too, more low-brow comedy but really funny at times...

or "Festen" is i think its proper danish title.

but i was seriously just thinking about making a post on dogme 95.

we studied it in my film class last semester, where we watched a few clips of "Italian for Beginners" and the whole of Festen. That shit's crazy, especially the story of festen.

I'm not sure what to think of it. on the one hand, its kind of foolish that they have all these set rules for their filmmakers. On the other, it was kind of interesting stuff, although festen was a pretty weird movie. the fact that the kept letting dude back in was stupid. and the first time he went off on that shit, i was high and already laughing at the movie, i just lost it. out of left field.

so i can at least say i know what the fuck you're talking about. whether i'm a fan and am going to seek out other danish movies?

we'll see.

It's a really dumb idea to make rigid rules from.

Italian for Beginners follows some of the Dogme rules, but isn't NEARLY as pretentious and ponderous as Dogme films tend to be.

Honestly, if a film advertises itself as Dogme, I avoid it.

Lars gets a "script consultant" or something mention in the credits of Wilbur, but I think he must have paid for it. I don't see a lot of his influence in it.

Brothers stars one of the actors that kurlyswirl & I adore and watch for in all our Danish films. That Nikolaj name name guy. He plays a dual role in Green Butchers. Watch for him. He has one of those extremely malleable faces, like Sonja Braga, that can be beautiful or awful or both, practically simultaneously.

It's some extremely memorable low-budget filmmaking. I don't even know how much they spent on it, but it was probably a couple month's grocery money or something. But because of that, it has a real candid feel. It's a pretty straight-forward crime movie, but it sticks out because the performances all seem very genuine and the filmmaking is obviously low-budget, and that aesthetic fits the slums of Copenhagen story great. It's amazing how interesting and exciting the movie is, especially when you consider how little actual money went into making it.

Plus I watch it a lot to remember my Danish, even if all they do is talk a lot of slang and cuss and swear (and all in a Copenhagen accent, those fuckers).

Most important line: "Du skylder mig penge, Franky."

What, those and the ones janey mentioned aren't enough to get you started? lol

Allegro, the latest film from the director of Reconstruction, is screening at SIFF but I opted to skip it due to lukewarm reviews and time constraints.

I'd planned to see Terkel in Trouble, billed as the first CGI animated film out of Denmark, but ended up blowing it off. I'm trying to download a torrent of it, but it's been slow going.

Seriously though, I recommend these 2 movies: http://imdb.com/title/tt0418455/ (Adams Ζbler - Adam's apples) and http://imdb.com/title/tt0457655/ (Efter Brylluppet - after the wedding)

Both features Mads Mikkelsen, and both received lots of critical praise when they were originally released.

I was just on IMDb.com last night, looking at Mads's listing and I saw After The Wedding. I'm a fan of Susanne Bier's work, so I'd love to see it. Too bad it hasn't been released here yet. I checked the release dates and there's nothing for the US. I expect it'll show up at next year's SIFF.

Adam's Apples is great. (I mentioned it in my original post.)

I started watching Flickering Lights last night and I'll finish it later tonight. I'll post some thoughts afterward.

Flickering lights is a great movie, but the humour is also very Danish, so the reception hasn't always been too great outside these borders. Arne (Mads) is fucking hilarious in the movie, though.

If you want to watch something that most people here consider classic, you should look up a tv-show called 'Riget'. I have no clue if it's available in the US, but it is definitely worth looking up.

Stephen King later tried to write his own adaption of the show, but apparently it blew hard. regardless, if possible, see if you can find this: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108906/

Mind you, the original IS Lars Von Trier, which you don't seem to interested in, but it's still some of his most accessable work. No idea if it'll translate well however.

Another movie that later was translated to the american bigscreen was nattevagten (Nightwatch). I hear that this movie sucked, also, because it was incredible predictable, but the original has the viewer sitting on the edge of the seat throughout the entire movie.
(take a look here, I guess http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110631/ )

I've found a few specialty shops that carry it along with a ton of other stuff you need regionless for, but the original Danish show hasn't been released in Region 1, I don't believe.

All *I* know about that show is that I used to watch when I was learning Danish, and it freaked me THE FUCK OUT because it made NO FUCKING SENSE what was happening, and then to top things off there's that stupid Swedish doctor who they didn't bother to sub-title, which just confused me even more. The few things I did understand were just fucking weird, anyway...

___________

HOPE!

The only redeeming factor to that film was that I thought the guy with the shaved head was sorta hot.

With that said, Lars von Trier is one of my favorite contemporary directors and I don't see anyone coming out of Denmark that could possibly compete with him.

Nikolaj Lie Kaas. Yeah, he's unconventionally sexy. If you thought he looked good in Green Butchers, you need to check out Reconstruction and Brothers.

I really, really enjoyed it. Great dark comedy/buddy movie. It was kinda Coen Brothers meets Tarantino, with a little Green Butchers thrown in there.

It stars 3 of the top male actors in Denmark: Ulrich Thomsen, Nicolaj Lie Kaas, and Mads Mikkelsen. Go Netflix it now!
