"I saw Goodfellas for the first time last night"

Wow.

Let me hold my head, let all of the music replay in my ears, and applaud Scorsese for this one.

This may be my favorite Scorsese movie. Raging Bull is the current title holder, but after a second viewing...this could easily take it.

Unconventional but wonderful narration, FUCKING GREAT USE OF MUSIC, and fantastic performances all around.

Wow.

There's a lot I still need to learn.

I've only seen one Kurosawa film.
One Godard film.
Five Scorseses (six, if you count on TV, which I don't).
No Terence Malick.
No Fritz Lang.

I've got a long way to go, brother.

But what I have seen? I KNOW. I make it a point to know inside and out.

That's why I'm on this board: to learn from others as I teach what I know.

It's, obviously, much more unpolished than his later films. I suspect that is what people have a hard time with.

But that's sort of why I like it.

Scorsese may still be trying to find his voice, but there's something about debut films, and the untarnished enthusiasm that comes with the first film from a director, that I love.

Even though it's not even close to being as mentioned as the Copa scene in Goodfellas or the mirror "You talking to me?" scene in Taxi Driver, I'd put the pool hall fight in Mean Streets against any Scorsese scene his greatest. It may be the most realistic fight scene that I've ever seen.

Plus, if one truly wants to understand Scorsese, where he came from, and how it shaped him as a director, it's absolutely essential to see, because it's basically a recreation of his neighborhood based on real people he knew.

From the awesome use of "Be My Baby" in the opening sequence of "Mean Streets" to the frightening Bernard Hermann score in "Taxi Driver" to the Italian opera used in the opening credits of "Raging Bull".

It's something he's gotten away from with his recent films, which is a shame.

The movie was all over the place. He forfeited characters for telling a broader story about the gangs as a whole and about the historical setting of the time period.

I was bored for every second Day-Lewis wasn't on the screen.

the utter contempt at the bickering of the two dipshits in front of him, one a woman of very advanced years, and yet he's resigned to politely explaining that you don't say "the deer paw". You can just tell the way he sells that line that he has had to explain the even the most simplest things to his even more simpler cohorts many time over.

This will sound trite and cliche but it's one of a thousand of "real life" moments in Goodfellas that make you feel like yo're not watching a movie, rather you're spying on a group of people's lives for a while.

While Thelma says Scorsese has a lot of influence, I'm sure they both kiss each others ass. I mean I highly doubt someone like Thelma Schoonmaker would stick with Scorsese for so long if she was merely a button pusher.

Now just peep the look on DENIRO's face and the exact moment when he decides that he gotta kill Morrey.

That shit is perfect and not a word spoken, everything you need to know about JIMMY CONWAY expressed by that look his gives Morrey from across the bar.

to be able to watch Goodfellas for the first time again...to listen to Paid In Full for the first time, my first blow job, my mom tucking me in, watching my daughter be born...man, its on THAT level.

The Summer before 9th grade, my best friend and I watched that, Scarface, Kentucky Fried Movie, and Miller's Crossing every week. But Goodfellas, Goodfellas we watched that movie damned near once a day. And it was ALWAYS the movie we threw on when girls came through to "test" how cool they were.

Can I pick your brain on certain things about the movie?

Did you find the lack of continuity in the film distracting at all?

Did you find the language and/or violence distracting?

Was there ever a time when the narration dragged or was in any way lacking to you?

The "Henry's last day as a gangster" series of scenes - does this fit well into the movie as it had been built all along? Do you think the movie was succinctly wrapped up?

Was there ever at any point a place in the film that you wished it had done something different?

Is there a weak performance anywhere in the film?

Did you know Henry Hill's story before you saw the movie?

Which did you see first: this or Casino?

Not in the least. I've seen way more profane films and way more violent films.

It seems to have a separate style to emphasis the signifance of the day-- it's just so frantic. I thought it worked well.

Not that I can think of after one viewing. I did feel like Joe Pesci's death was somewhat anti-climactic, but then again, that's how Henry Hill described the steez of the wiseguy, so I can't complain.

Nope.

WHERE WERE YOU!!!???!? A MARRIED MAN DOES NOT STAY OUT ALL NIGHT!!! WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE ARE THIS?!?

>Tommy: Cracks dude over the head w/ a bottle. Shoots Spider
>on 2 occasions (last 1 fatal). Kills Billy Batts. Kills Sammy
>Jack.

Tommy has to be the biggest ass out of the crew. He fucks everyone by killing a made guy after having a public beef with him. When he kills Spider the movie all of a sudden moves from a Mobster appreciation to a Look At How These Ass-holes Really Can Be movie.

But I don't think he's jerk for whacking (and THIS is the film that made this term popular) Stax, he HAD too. Stax was the one, as well as in real-life, fucked them all by not torching the truck like he ws supposed to. The dude drove it TO HIS GIRLFRIEND'S HOUSE IN QUEENS (where the Robert's Lounge was) and left it out front with his fingerprints all in it. Tommy was identified the night of the heist by the guards so it was only a matter of time before they got to Jimmy. In reality, Tommy was the next one to die (disappear). Partly because Jimmy was parnoid but also because he whacked a member of John Gotti's crew.

>

The movie makes it seem like he was a shithead for doing what he did but the government was playing him tapes of Jimmy and Anthony Stabile discussin taking him out. They apparently had Big Paul's okay. The meeting represented by the diner meeting in the movie, was actully a nighttime meeting Jimmy had set up for Henry in a bar they'd never been in. In the movie you get a feeling that Henry still could have gone another way and Jimmy and Paulie are sympathetic, but in real life Henry was dead. It was only a matter of days before they killed him.

he practically killed his whole crew out of sheer greed and paranoia. then again Jimmy's killings were always about business. Tommy would kill you for the hell of it.

Henry was more the lightweight. he snitched on Pauly, but Pauly was gonna have him killed anyway.

still, I'll go with Jimmy just for the body count

My mother's gonna make some fried peppers and sausage for us. Oh hey, here's an arm. Here's a leg. Here's a wing. Hey, what do you like, the leg or the wing, Henry? Or do you still go for the old hearts and lungs?

I will always think of Goodfellas when I hear these song parts:

"But they'll say no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
Everybody knows, I thought you knew, hearts made of stone"

"Sincerely, oh yeah, sincerely...Cause I love you so dearly"

"Somewheeerrree beyond the sea, she's there watching for meeeee"

"We dated...through high schooooll...."

"Errrthang gon be awwright this moa-ning"

"Well, I hope we're not too messianic...or a trifle too satanic...I'm a MONKAAAY!!"

I swear I heard marty say somewhere that the scene with the helicopter was just showing Henry's paranoia due to the drug use and the copter's weren't following him. I was always under the impression that was what it was. Until I came here and it's a consensus that the copter was following him all day.

They could've busted him anywhere along that day and got the same stuff. There was no reason to wait and get him at that moment.

Which is why I've believed the idea of heightened paranoia and the helicopter being a good symbol of that. Even when it wasn't flying he was looking for it.

so did Henry's brother

plus remember, they didn't pick him up until Lois (the lucky hat girl) called from the house phone instead of a payphone.

plus at the police station, they brought in every person Henry visited that day.

In response to Reply # 71

3 out of 5 indicates a balanced film
1 and 2 mean good script, bad acting/filming etc
4 and 5 mean weak script, good acting/filming etc

it's specially made for okayplayer, so Lost in Translation and Eternal Sunshine can get 5/5

Great movie thought I'd add my two cents and favorite scene:

Jimmy goes to get his money from Morrie, the hair commercial playing on the tv, Henry trying to talk Morrie into paying Jimmy and he is stalling. Jimmy comes back to the room, wraps the phone cord around Morrie's neck and Henry has this uncontrollable laughter! Don't know why but that scene moved me ... now I have to watch it again.

For what it is worth Nas 'The Firm' album was based entirely around this movie. Those that didn't know that, maybe now you could appreciate it more. Those that already knew, maybe you could help me understand why it was so criticized.

Nas was Jimmy
AZ was Henry Hill
Foxy was Karen

Gives the album an entirely different perspective but this is a topic for another day ...

Loved the movie!
